Absolutely great German food, delicious. The atmosphere was cosy and cheerful. I loved the fact there was no music, only the natural buzz of conversations and cutlery. We had to book a table for dinner, otherwise it would have been difficult. Great place, great food! Thank you!

I had a delicious meal this evening. The osso buco was incredibly tender and fell right off the bone, the marrow bone was very generous, and the Brussels sprouts were absolutely fantastic. The mashed potatoes with celery could have used a touch more salt for my taste, but you can always add more yourself. One main course with a glass of house red wine for €38 is highly recommended. However, it's advisable to reserve a table in advance after 6 pm (even on weekdays) as the restaurant is quite popular. The noise level is acceptable, even when it's crowded. I walked about 10 minutes from the H2 Hotel, but finding parking there can be a bit of a challenge. Nevertheless, I highly recommend taking on this challenge, as it's well worth it. Many thanks again to the kitchen and the friendly and attentive staff.

A delicious seasonal menu with a choice of appetizers, main courses, and desserts. An aperitif of your choice was included for under €60. I had foie gras as a starter, venison goulash with red cabbage and potato dumplings as a main course, and then a chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. I've rarely eaten so well!

The two of us ordered the surprise menu, which unfortunately consisted of a dry, overcooked ossobuco on cold mashed potatoes and celery for the main course. The accompanying Brussels sprouts were more than al dente. The mushroom and pumpkin soups to start were delicious. The dessert, Kaiserschmarrn, was also disappointing – dry and relatively tasteless instead of buttery and crispy. Very annoying for almost €75 per person. A real shame.

Excellent service, cuisine, and wines. Reservations are required. During the winter months, I find the dining room too cramped.

Our visit to the Hirsch yesterday was very enjoyable overall, but there are a few points we'd like to mention. The three different soups as starters were an absolute delight! My wife's field salad with potato dressing was also truly delicious. For our main courses, we both ordered the goose platter with red cabbage, chestnuts, and potato dumplings. The website stated that you could choose between this platter, a whole goose for four people, and half a goose for two. However, we were told on-site that the half goose had to be pre-ordered, which was a real shame, as we would have loved to try it. Regarding the goose platter: We noticed that the breast pieces on both plates were significantly different in size. We were also looking forward to crispy skin, but found that the meat tasted rather pre-cooked and reheated – slow cooking would definitely be recommended to make the meat more tender. The red cabbage was a culinary delight, however, it contained so many juniper berries that we had to pick them out individually, which was a real shame. The gravy was excellent, while the potato dumplings were extremely small. The first few dumplings we received were raw. When we ordered a free second helping, we got two small, undercooked dumplings, and our request for more dumplings went unanswered – we would have gladly paid for more. Chestnuts weren't included until we asked for them. Overall, the meal was very tasty, and we were also delighted with the dessert and the perfectly hot espresso and cappuccino. However, it's regrettable that the juniper berries in the red cabbage, the small dumplings, and the less-than-tender meat somewhat marred our overall impression. One final point: I think that as a restaurateur, one should refrain from expressing political opinions, for example, through stickers on the premises!

We were at the Hirschen yesterday... Sunday, October 19, 2025... for the "Sunday roast dinner" and, what can I say... pure local cuisine 👌 ..... Hats off... great concept, superb cuisine. Totally feel-good 😍 We had sauerbraten with dumplings and red cabbage.... Perfectly presented, a large portion with seconds guaranteed... 😉... super friendly and attentive service.... We'll definitely be back... not just on Sundays... 😊

As always, very, very tasty and pleasant. While not cheap, the value for money is absolutely excellent. Incredibly delicious food, large portions, friendly staff, and a pleasant atmosphere.

Delicious (mostly German) food at a slightly upscale level. The quality of the dishes and ingredients is good, and the plates are beautifully presented. The service was very friendly and attentive, although one or two drinks were forgotten. The food was very tasty, but unfortunately not really hot. All in all, a restaurant for a special evening.

The food was amazing! Super tasty, cooked to perfection, and very well-seasoned. However, the rest of the food was disappointing. The service was just the bare minimum; you could hear all the conversations going on outside, and the drinks were very thin, especially for the price.

The food was absolutely delicious. We had the Cordon Bleu, and it was sensationally good and beautifully presented. The service staff were absolutely fantastic: attentive, witty, charming, and never at a loss for excuses 😉 We'd be happy to go back anytime!

So far, I've always been very satisfied and felt comfortable, but unfortunately, I had a very unpleasant experience last Sunday. Despite having a reservation on the terrace, we ended up at a table located on the sidewalk next to the terrace. Unfortunately, that's a complete no-go and incomprehensible to me :-(

Absolutely fantastic German cuisine – the food was incredibly delicious and full of flavor. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with attentive and friendly staff. A true gem that I highly recommend!

To date, I haven't received a response to my inquiry regarding allergens. There have only been discussions about whether or not to make a reservation.

Today (August 17th) we were at the "Goldener Hirsch" for the Sunday roast again. As always, it was a delight. Perfectly cooked meat, delicious side dishes to match. The kitchen is excellent. Highly recommended.

We had a very good meal, but sorry, the service needs to be more attentive. After the food was served, we didn't see anyone again. We weren't asked if we were satisfied (by the way, the pepper sauce was inedible because of all the pepper), and we weren't offered any more drinks. With the 35°C heat on the terrace, we would have happily spent a few euros more. Then the food was finished, and still no one was there. I had to go to the counter to have a chance of getting my bill. There were five nice ladies at the counter, and the restaurant wasn't full. What a shame.

Please improve menu clarity on what is incremental and what is included. Do not say a dish includes side and see below and all of the side cost additional. If all sides include additional cost then just put the main dish as without side

Good food, slow service and expensive

I went to the "Goldener Hirsch" four evenings in a row because the first one had so impressed me. On the first evening, I ate "Gefillde" (a kind of stuffed pork loin). My mother often made it. Here at the "Goldener Hirsch," the tenderly sliced, rendered bacon strips were served in a cream sauce. This gave the whole thing a special flavor. The "Gefillde" was filled with liverwurst; it was a poem. Anyone who has seen the animated film "Ratatouille" knows what I'm talking about. At the "Goldener Hirsch," I also ate the crispy fried black pudding, the beef roulade, and, for the first time in my life, a Palatinate sausage. The chef explained the preparation to me beforehand. All I can say is: If you're going to have sausage, go to the "Goldener Hirsch." I also enjoyed the desserts: crème brûlée, chocolate soufflé, and Gourmand II. The wine pairing rounded off the whole experience perfectly. I also recommend the 20-year-old old pomace. Also worth mentioning is the friendly and customer-oriented service of the young team, led by the energetic restaurant owner. At the "Goldener Hirsch," you can enjoy the food and wine. You can't just grab a quick bite here. Mainz and the "Goldener Hirsch" are my favorite! This restaurant deserves a "Guide Routard" award.

Great restaurant in the Neustadt

Excellent German cuisine. We had the schnitzel and were very satisfied. A large selection of drinks. We received a very friendly welcome and service. We are completely satisfied and can recommend the restaurant. Since the restaurant is quite small, reservations are recommended.

We had a reservation outside for 5:30 p.m. on a Saturday. We wanted a different table, but it was explicitly reserved for another group. No one was there until two hours later. Service was slow and unprofessional. Prices were high, the food was rather mediocre, and unfortunately, everything was served lukewarm to cold. We waited an hour for the main course.

Nice traditional German food. It was quite busy so we had to wait a while for our food and drinks. Cozy place, with the possibility to sit outside.

I was at the Goldener Hirsch for the first time today. We had reserved a table. The menu initially reads well. The asparagus cream soup as a starter did not correspond to what was on the menu. The strips of white and green asparagus described were thick pieces of asparagus with too firm a bite. Also, the soup was lukewarm. The main course (Gefillde with vegetarian filling) was beautifully prepared, but it was only lukewarm and the filling of the dumplings was even ice cold, which spoiled the enjoyment. This was complained about and I was served a fresh plate with the same main course. Unfortunately, this meal was only lukewarm or ice cold, so I ended up skipping the meal. Since the menu has very high prices, the food should live up to it.

Went there yesterday with a group and felt very comfortable despite the long wait. The service was very understanding and we were offered a night on the house because of the very long waiting time 😍 Thank you for your courtesy 👌🤩 Food was excellent 🙏☑️

We were there on Saturday April 19th, 2025 at 5 p.m.... The ambience is great and the food itself is ok... however, we had two completely normal schnitzels and completely normal boiled asparagus with 4 small potatoes... 2 beers, 1 shandy... 1 children's schnitzel with fries (fries that weren't even salted) that was bigger than our schnitzel... €79.50... for the completely normal meal quite expensive... that was our last meal there... service was friendly... but the price for this meal was really steep!!!!!!!!!!

Super nice and patient service. Had all the fun. It also made up for my food. I had fish on tagliatelle and it wasn't that great. But the pasta with sauce was tasty. There is good wine, unfortunately also very expensive.

This is the second time I have booked the Golden Hirsch for a team meeting with international colleagues. There are several reasons for this: 1. English menus 2. Classics like steak are on it and they always work 3. There are local specialties, which are particularly appreciated by our German colleagues 4. Price-performance ratio is simply right. Quality of the food is really good. 5. Reservations can be made in a timely manner via email. 6. We are very satisfied with the service and speed. The meals were served almost at the same time, which is not always a given with a large group. I also like that it is a rather small shop, so you can have a good chat and there is no “canteen atmosphere” like in large pubs And the vegetarian areas are simply a poem. Best dumpling ever. Fluffy, soft and they absorb the delicious Riesling sauce really well. We look forward to next time :-)

Actually mostly very satisfied. Unfortunately disappointing this time. The cordon bleu was dry and practically without cheese, the carrots that came with it were cold and the risotto was more like a rice soup. In addition, the empty drinks were unfortunately not noticed, and the service was more on call. As I said, we come often, but yesterday, unfortunately, was really a “Monday experience”.

Finally potatoes that actually tasted like potatoes. The mashed potatoes and the fried potatoes were excellent. The meat is tender and juicy. Salad dressing, honey mustard, was very well balanced. A great meal, with very good regional products. We would be happy to visit you again. Thank you.

Wir waren heute das erste mal im Goldener Hirsch. Es hat alles gepasst vom tollen Service und dem leckeren Essen. Mit Sicherheit werden wir in regelmäßigen Abständen wieder reservieren und uns verwöhnen lassen. Auch einen Anruf für den vergessenen Schal ist nicht selbstverständlich.

Good regional dishes are served here in a cozy atmosphere. The staff is very friendly and happy to advise guests. The food is lovingly prepared, but overall a bit expensive. Unfortunately, the goose leg wasn't entirely convincing as the meat was a bit tough and couldn't be easily separated from the bone. The side dishes and sauces were well seasoned. Overall, we still spent a nice evening there.

I go there to eat once a year. The staff is very friendly and nice, unfortunately they change too often. In terms of cuisine and price, it can compete with Wiesbaden. The atmosphere is indescribable. Where else can you find good German cuisine in Mainz? 🤔

Hello, Yesterday I ate goose leg with red cabbage and dumplings. According to the school grading system, I would give a maximum of 4. The red cabbage tasteless and apparently not seasoned. The dumplings were rubbery and also unconvincing in taste. Only the goose leg met expectations. Therefore, I cannot give a positive recommendation for the golden deer.

Wir waren zum Essen, Gans für 2 Personen (79,-) Gans war gut , die Beilagen waren lauwarm, was bei knapp 40,- pro Nase eigentlich nicht vorkommen sollte. Service war nett, halt junge Studies ... Alles in Allem war es okay, nochmal würde ich es nicht machen.

Sehr gutes Essen, klassische Rezepte auch mit einem modernen Twist erhältlich und freundliche, zügige Bedienung. Sehr zufrieden, wir kommen gerne wieder.

Ate goose leg. This was of good quality. However, some of the side dishes were not edible. The red cabbage was totally bitter, not seasoned. The sauce has no taste. The waitress said that this can happen if the red cabbage is cooked for too long, so she passes it on to the kitchen. It's a shame, overall not worth the money.

The positive first. The service is good and we were even allowed to swap the reserved table. Our wishes were taken into account and the service was always attentive and courteous/accommodating. The negative: The food, below average. Deer ragout is medium, red cabbage and dumplings are probably ready-made gastro products. The one for €31 is sporty. No finesse. Dumplings without breadcrumbs, red cabbage without, for example, apple or bay leaf notes. Dark sauce for the ragout, no special taste. Meat also has no wow factor, even mixed. Chestnut soup is also not a highlight. Ambiance okay, a bit drafty. Tablecloth/decoration rather simple. The tablecloth is more reminiscent of a TV test pattern than of a cozy evening for two, but you can be forgiven. A bottle of water €8. You can do anything, but it has to be something special. However, not an evening to repeat for us. Too bad.

Es war alles absolut in Ordnung. Da die bestellte Gans aber bei der Ankunft schon für die Restbackzeit in die Röhre kommt, sollte man den Gast darauf hinweisen, da sonst die Bestellung einer Vorspeise zu knapp bemessen ist.

Five stars aren't actually enough - it should be at least six. Absolute gem in the “Kreuzberg” of Mainz, conveniently located to the main train station. Without much frills, Palatinate cuisine (yes, in Rheinhessen) is offered here at reasonable prices, including home cooking such as roulade and of course Saumagen. The wine list contains many treasures from the Palatinate and Rheinhessen, some of them a little off the beaten path. Ultra-friendly service, small special requests are fulfilled quickly and calmly. The manageable number of tables fills up quickly, so be sure to reserve! When we made our reservations, we were told the time of the next table occupancy so that we could prepare for it and avoid unnecessary hecticness. Conclusion: unreservedly recommended. A restaurant that you always look for and rarely find.

Unfortunately our reserved table was still occupied by the previous guests, so like many others we had to wait outside the door in the rain. When we were finally allowed to sit down at the table late, it took over half an hour before we even got a card in our hands. We had to wait a whole 2 hours (!!) for our food. The food was great. When we wanted to pay, the waiter told us after half an hour, “Oh, I completely forgot about you!” The whole evening was a complete disaster considering the service. Not once did anyone apologize for our extremely long wait or for being forgotten. Even though the food was good, the prices are absolutely not justified for such substandard service, not to mention the drinks prices (a bottle of water for 8 euros?!). The golden deer had been on my wish list for a long time and was unfortunately a bitter disappointment, a shame!

This typically German restaurant is located a bit away from the touristic city centre, although not too far from Mainz railway station. The dining room is lively and nicely decorated. Advance booking almost essential as the restaurant was full even mid-week. Thumbs-up to the waitresses for the smiling and attentive service during the entire dinner. As starter the riesling creamy soup was revigorating and flavourful. As main course the deer stew proved very tasty with a generous portion. As dessert I indulged in a delicious chocolate soufflé with vanilla ice cream. Prices remain pleasantly moderate. Given the very food and service, I will gladly come back.

Excellent food and service in a comfortable, unpretentious setting. My Schweinebraten was so tender it almost needed a spoon. Even the accompanying carrots were cooked perfectly. My husband’s Rinderroulade was delicious also. We speak only a little German but the staff kindly used English with us. Wonderful meal to end our month of travel in Germany!

Kleines Restaurant, etwas überteuert für das was man geboten bekommen hat. Ziegenkäsesalat war viel zu viel Essig! Emmas rinderroulade war leider sehr trocken ! Dessert Schokoladen Soufflé war gut Service war ok aber wir sind besseres gewohnt, kaum zuvorkommend, es wurden keine Empfehlungen ausgesprochen… kein Wein empfohlen und auch kein Dessert. Leichte Überforderung. Brot auf dem Tisch muss extra bestellt werden für diese Preisklasse könnte man es auch auf die Tische stellen. Keine Romantische Hintergrund Musik. Gesamtbewertung, der Aufenthalt ok aber kein zweiten Besuch wert.
