So quaint and so authentic—there's no other village inn like it! The landlady ambitiously runs everything on her own, without any help. She grills giant schnitzels, juicy cordon bleu, and bakes the finest schnitzels, serving everything with pithy remarks. Anyone who respects the "boss" will be kept in a good mood with witty and quick-witted comments. The prices aren't "top," they're absolutely "low"! Anyone who doesn't understand this wonderful microcosm is best off staying out!

Large portions at fair prices, and very tasty. The landlady runs the service, the kitchen, and the bar all by herself. For that, she deserves my utmost respect, and you're happy to wait a few minutes longer.

A rustic restaurant, just like you'd expect from the old days. A must for meat lovers! The cordon bleu is a hit! The biggest cordon bleu I've ever seen. Two schnitzels on top of each other, pounded by the landlady herself, with plenty of cheese and ham in between. The taste is outstanding! The landlady does everything herself – drinks, food, service – and finds time to exchange a few personal words with each guest. We really enjoyed it and, above all, enjoyed it! We'd love to come back!

July 18, 2025 Dining here is a real experience. The building, decor, and hostess are a throwback to a bygone era. The hostess is sweet, has a sharp and witty sense of humor, cooks deliciously, serves in her own unique style, and does everything in and around this wonderful restaurant. What a huge portion of delicious food we received! The cordon bleu was enormous and exquisite, very generously filled. The schnitzel was a massive portion of meat. In both cases, it came with perfect fries and a delicious beilagensalat. We only saw locals. A wonderful evening out, hosted by an owner with a heart in the right place. We thank Eva for the evening and the delicious food and hope she will be here for a long time to come. In her place, full of memories of wonderful times. Payment is cash. Parking is available next to the restaurant.

Biggest Cordon Bleu I've ever had! This restaurant was recommended to me by the owner of my overnight stay in Markelsheim. From the outside, I probably wouldn't have just walked in, but it was very good! The menu isn't extensive, which is a testament to the quality. I didn't wait long before the oversized Cordon Bleu came out of the kitchen... Very good, very large, very tasty ;) Another place where this amount of meat would have made three Cordon Bleu... No frozen meat, these were two proper schnitzels with cheese and ham in between, very tasty! The landlady, a true character, speaks her mind and runs the place completely on her own! It was an experience!

The inn's exterior is dated, and you'll initially be hesitant about whether to go in. Inside, the ambiance matches what you'd expect from the exterior. But you'll be rewarded: with delicious and plentiful food at reasonable prices and a truly unique hostess. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening at the Ochsen and hope this inn will be around for a few more years.

Really a shame. I really felt sorry for the landlady, she was really overwhelmed (an older lady), all alone in the dining room and the kitchen. The food was bad (almost black fries, the currywurst was old, the chicken was very dry) and cannot be recommended at the moment.

We were at Ochsen Essen. The landlady is quite burchikos. The food was good, two giant schnitzels with fries for €17 were great. Everything fresh and homemade. Since she does everything alone, it takes a while. But everything is within reason.

Quaint pub with delicious food and decent portions. Food can also be ordered “to go”. All I can say about the landlady is that she sometimes comes across as bold. Additional operation would be an advantage.

Unfortunately, 0 stars are not possible, otherwise I would give them. It used to be really great there. You can really forget about it now. The “mistress” is completely overwhelmed and takes it out on the guests. Loveless, cheeky & unprofessional - I think these words sum it up quite well. If you want to be insulted and treated disrespectfully, go ahead. For everyone else, I recommend choosing another restaurant.

Looking for dinner, I ended up at Gasthof Ochsen in Markelsheim. This was by far the most authentic economy I have ever visited. The landlady is truly unique – she cooks, stands behind the counter and manages the service, all in one person. She is direct, says what she thinks and doesn't mince her words. When I was there, she actually sent a regular customer home just because he had a dirty sweater on - he should change. The menu is manageable, schnitzel, cordon bleu in all possible variations and, if ordered, a roast roast - but that's not even on the menu. I ordered a schnitzel with spaetzle and it was an absolute blast! Huge portion, great taste. You hear the knock from the kitchen, and less than ten minutes later a freshly breaded schnitzel with a golden brown breading is on the table. Plus homemade spaetzle and a really good sauce. Price-performance? Unbeatable – like grandma used to. If you're in the area, you shouldn't miss this. This is almost experience gastronomy!

We always enjoy eating here. The portions and the quality are very good. Everything is homemade here and you can taste it too.

An old and quaint economy. The boss is a waitress and cook at the same time and doesn't mince her words. There wasn't much going on when we were there so we didn't have to wait long for drinks and food. The food was freshly prepared in the kitchen - we heard the meat being pounded. The waiting time is probably a little longer if there are a lot of tables occupied, but this is normal if you are alone and running the whole place. As for the food itself, we can say that it is sensible home cooking and the portion size is easily enough for two people. At least that's what we found with the Cordon Bleu. As a tip, the landlady said: Feel free to call and reserve a place. If you know what you want to eat, tell it straight away on the phone. This means that waiting times may be shorter when you come to eat.

Absolute disaster, it started with a call asking if there was still a table available for two. Then they said yes and hung up. It could have been for another date. Well, when we got there: we waited an eternity for the order to be taken, waited another eternity for the drinks to be delivered, and the cards were carelessly thrown at us from the table next door where guests were also sitting. Now we have found the food we shouldn't have at all. When I asked at some point whether we could also order our food, we were bluntly told that we should get in touch earlier and why we were waiting so long to order. We assumed that we would be asked what we would like to eat when the tickets were picked up and we were in a not-so-cheap restaurant. Then we paid for the drinks and left. It was absolute horror. We then drove on to another restaurant and met people there who also ended up there because they seemed to be in the same situation an hour before us. Conclusion: The ox used to be good, today it's forgettable. It's a shame. .

After our week-long bike tour, we wanted to eat the great schnitzel from this amazing woman. Had reserved the week before. Unfortunately it was closed yesterday. The waitress at the hotel opposite didn't know either. Everyone in town would be surprised because there isn't even a note on the door. Hopefully nothing bad happened. If she is sick, we definitely wish her a speedy recovery. Hopefully she can continue to run the restaurant like this for a long time.

The absolute blast. Experience gastronomy of a different kind :-) You have to experience this landlady; really crazy. She obviously actually runs the store on her own - but she's certainly over 70. She knows that she's a bit "special". The food is plentiful and very good. You experience something here.

Nice meal. A nice thick pork steak (without breadcrumbs), an ordered green salad with red onion, peppers and cabbage, not to mention the excellent fries. “You are from Holland, now I understand that you ask for mayonnaise with the fries.” And so it happened. Don't forget to throw in a few half liters of Herbsthäuser to make the schnitzel swim well. “Meat must swim,” we say in the Netherlands. Everything is OK here.

If you don't eat here, you're missing out. Good food, plentiful and above all a nice landlady. The schnitzel... is awesome. It's best not to eat anything all day. The portion is very generous. Or order half a portion. We had a lot of fun.

We were here for the first time today. We had the Jägerschnitzel once breaded and once plain with homemade spaetzle. Was very good. The service was also very good, cooking and serving everything in one person. Kudos. Thanks for the great food.

I recommend this restaurant to local residents, because even I (who moved nearby) couldn't cope with the rustic manner of the innkeeper and was taken aback at first. (I'm sure she's a very nice lady) In general, you really have to have a lot of time here because she hosts and cooks alone. The food was plentiful and tasty but a bit too fatty/hearty for me personally.

Wir kommen seit Jahren immer mal wieder nach Markelsheim. Erste Adresse für's Abendessen ist der Ochsen. Riesen Portionen zu fairen Preisen. Und das, was aus der Küche kommt, ist einfach nur genial😋😋😋 Am Wochenende waren wir wieder mal dort gewesen. Erneut gab's ein traumhaftes Bauern-Cordon-Bleu und am Tag drauf ein geniales Rumpsteak mit Röstzwiebeln, das es aber leider nicht immer gibt. Deshalb erneut: 😋😋😋

Die Wirtin: ein Genuß. Das Essen: sehr gut, sehr reichlich. Die anderen Gäste: wunderbar.

Een schnitzel eten bij Ewa is garantie voor een leuk avondje uit. Het eten is overheerlijk, als je liever niet teveel aankomt in de vakantie is een kleine portie aan te raden. De gastvrouw is een schat van een mens met het hart op de tong.

Leuke ervaring. Eva flodder regelt alles op haar manier. Lekker eten . Rustieke ambiance.

Was für ein tolles Erlebnis! Angelockt durch die diversen Bewertungen und abendlichem Hungergefühl betraten wir die urige Gaststätte. Jedoch stellte sich die anfänglich etwas herbe und mürrisch wirkende Wirtin als äußerst liebevolle Gastgeberin heraus. Die Schnitzel, die wir frisch zubereitet genießen durften, waren wirklich seit Jahren die besten überhaupt. Ein großes Lob an Ewa, die es trotz widriger Umstände schafft, die Gaststätte aufrecht zu erhalten. Herzliche Grüße und hoffentlich sehen wir uns beim nächsten Mal wieder.

Wir waren gestern im Ochsen, hatten nicht reserviert und waren am Anfang über den etwas ruppigen Ton verwundert, sind aber geblieben obwohl man uns zuerst nicht garantieren konnte ob wir was zum Essen bekommen. Zu bleiben war die beste Entscheidung. Das Essen war sehr lecker. Kein Tütenfutter, sondern alles selbst von der Wirtin Eva gekocht. Liebe Eva, ich ziehe den Hut vor Ihnen, wie sie das ganz alleine hinbekommen und wir bedanken uns bei Ihnen und den 4 jungen Markelsheimer Männern am Nachbartisch für den wahnsinnig schönen Abend.

Wir waren auf Grund einer Empfehlung heute zum ersten Mal dort. Es ist eine in die Jahre gekommene Wirtschaft, die ein wenig Liebe gebrauchen könnte :-) Es war doch recht kühl im Wirtsraum. Also falls Sie das lesen, liebe Wirtin, Sie sind wirklich toll! Wie Sie das wuppen, dafür verdienen Sie meinen größten Respekt. Das Essen stand innerhalb 25 Min auf dem Tisch. Die Portion war gigantisch, ich hab es nicht geschafft. Den Rest durfte ich mit nach Hause nehmen. Das Schnitzel war sehr zart ! Auch der Mini hat es geschmeckt. Und Kinder sind ja oft ein bisschen wählerisch :-) Vielen Dank fürs leckere Abendessen! Wir sind zufrieden wieder nach Hause. (Ich hatte s Jägerschnitzel)

Habe selten ein so gutes Cordon Bleu gegessen

Wir waren heute zum Essen im Ochsen. Die Wirtin ist einfach ein Original, nicht jeder kann mit ihrem Charme umgehen, wer sie aber "versteht" hat gewonnen. Das Essen war einfach super gut.

Lässt man sich vom Ambiente und dem forschen Ton der Betreiberin nicht abschrecken, erwartet einen, ein mit Liebe zubereitetes Gericht, hier wird alles noch selbst gemacht! Die Portionen reichen eigentlich für zwei Tage, was auch den Preis mehr als rechtfertigt. Für die Portionsgröße eigentlich sogar zu günstig bei stetig wachsenden Preisen für Lebensmittel und Energie. Das Essen schmeckt hervorragend.

Wer ordendlich Apetitt hat ist hier genau richtig. Sehr zu empfehlen ist das Bauern-Cordonbleu mit geräuchertem Schinken. Mann darf sich nicht über die kleinen Pommes-Portionen aufregen, die sind ausreichend groß, nicht alle schaffen die. Zu dem sind alle Speisen, obwohl nich nach den neuesten Erkenntnissewn der Ernährungsforschung, sehr Schmackhaft und es macht höllischspass hier zu sündigen.

Sehr gute Schnitzel und Cordon bleus. Jetzt auch in kleiner Portion. Da immer sehr viel los ist, ist es ratsam vorher anzurufen.

Wer eine große Portion frisch zubereitet ist leicht haben möchte ist hier richtig da bekommt man zwei Schweineschnitzel zum Preis von einem. Es war vor Corona sehr lecker daran hat sich auch nichts geändert

Auf Bestellung, zum Mitnehmen, zwei halbe Hähnchen mit Pommes. Sehr knusprig sehr würzig, so wie man es seit Jahren kennt. Empfehlenswert ist auf jeden Fall noch zusätzlich eine Tüte oder eine Schüssel . Dann bleibts es auch wirklich lange warm.

Diese Gaststätte ist wirklich zu empfehlen! Die Portionen sind echt ordentlich von der Menge her - was für den großen Hunger (man kann auch jeweils Die Option "klein" wählen) ohne dabei zu hoch bepreist zu sein. Ein unheimlich leckeres Cordon Bleu wurde frisch geklopft und für uns zubereitet. Die Inhaber kochen und bedienen selbst und sind total nett. Eine klare Empfehlung für jeden der in der Nähe ist. Es gibt frisch zubereitete, deftige Hausmannskost, natürlich Herbsthäuser vom Fass und urigen Charme.

Man soll sich nicht von der Fassade abschrecken lassen. Höflich und eine frische leckere Küche.

Mitten im wunderschönen Markelsheim liegt die kleine und urige Wirtschaft „Ochsen“ mit der einzigartigen Wirtin Deva. Bei saftigen Bier, guter Musik und dem Klopfen des Schnitzelklopfers kann man hier super verweilen! Das Essen ist sehr sehr lecker und auch Bären und Elefanten bekommt man mit den Portionen der Wirtin satt! 5von5Sternen!

Urige Gaststätte, Preis-Leistungsverhältnis ist top - riesen Portionen und es schmeckt echt lecker. Kann das frisch gemachte Cordonbleu sehr empfehlen, Steak und halbe Hähnchen auch sehr gut. Wirtin ist ein Original.
