Freiberger Schankhaus in Dresden

The service has deteriorated significantly... I was ignored by the waiter! The food quality has also declined... especially considering the prices! I used to enjoy coming here... but with this level of quality, I'm done.

We were here for a seminar group meeting. I had duck breast with dumplings and lots of red cabbage. It was delicious. The service was friendly and everything went smoothly. They have draft beer, juice spritzers, and more. It's cozy.

Half a pig's trotter and some beer were enough to fill two people up. The pig's trotter had a delicious roasted meat flavor.

We were at Freiberger on Friday around 1 p.m. We went there specifically because they had steak au four (that's what it said online)! The incredibly unfriendly server told us that they hadn't had steak au four for 5-6 years... Right. But we were there in 2024 and got it. As a substitute, we were given a ridiculously overpriced sauerbraten for €25, or rather, one slice! I'm never going there again. A disaster.

The ambiance is charming and rustic, but the service felt a bit disorganized; we had to wait a very long time for our second drinks even though the restaurant wasn't full. The food, however, was top-notch – 5 stars, definitely worth it, we'd gladly return.

The space is large and can accommodate many guests at the same time. The roasted pig's feet are very crispy, so you need to have good teeth. The sauerkraut is also delicious. After the meal, you can take a stroll around the neighborhood and see this strong and great city with a story.

The food was fine, though nothing particularly special. Unfortunately, the service could have been better. The waiter seemed somewhat inattentive and distant. When bringing the bill, he asked if I wanted to add a tip to the card payment. I said no and mentioned we would leave cash instead — his reaction felt noticeably unpleasant. Such behavior seemed a bit inappropriate and left an unfortunate impression, especially for a restaurant in the center of a European city.

I was really pleasantly surprised by the Freiberger Schankhaus, as I don't know of many good restaurants in the old town. The service was fast and good, although one waiter seemed a bit unfriendly/brief. The other waiter, however, was all the more friendly. I really enjoyed the Sauerbraten, and it was a good value for money. My companion's pork steak, however, was a bit run-of-the-mill and nothing special. Nevertheless, we would come back in the fall/winter.

Nice restaurant at first glance. Waiters were hopelessly overwhelmed on a Friday night, waiting 70 minutes for food, and there weren't enough staff. The food was okay. But I wouldn't go back.

It's a shame, despite having a table reservation for nine people, we were escorted out of the restaurant after 1.5 hours... We were literally "forced to pay." The table would have been given to someone else. The drinks and food were fine. Thank you for this embarrassment in front of our nationwide guests. So, if you want to spend a longer, enjoyable evening together, you should avoid this restaurant.

It's actually a tourist restaurant with a rustic ambiance and almost exclusively convenience food. Better cafeteria food at prices appropriate for the location. The beer is nothing special either. The service is rather average, and you get the sense that they don't really want an honest answer when asked if the food tastes good. Sorry, not worth repeating.

The whole pork knuckle—my must-try dish in Dresden! It’s a generous portion for one person, but the leftovers are just as delicious later. Crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside—I absolutely love this classic German dish. I visited the restaurant in the morning, right after it opened, and then spent half the day exploring the city. It’s conveniently located right in Dresden’s main square, making it a perfect stop before or after sightseeing.

The restaurant is located in the center of Dresden. The dishes are okay. I recommend the Saxon sausage. The prices are moderate.

Aggressive service and waiting long if you use the self-service by phone. After 15 minutes waiting for 2 beers, the waiter gave me the wrong one (a bigger one) and then asked for 2 euros more, saying that he did a mistake and that we have to compromise 😅 He insisted a few times although the price difference is actually 70 cents...

We orderer two beers (0.5l and 0.3l) using the app because it seems is the only way (of course asking fot tips). After waiting 15 minutes where we couldn't leave because we payed online, they arrived with 2 beers of 0.5l. We didn't understand at the beginning but ok, could be nice gesture after waiting so much. Two minutes after, they come and said to us that one beer should be 0.3l, They recognize that is their fault but we still need to pay 2€, when the difference between the two sizes is only 1.4€. They literally said: "It is my mistake but you have to pay". We said ask to return the beer and take the 0.3l but they also refuse that. They wanted to pay us that money. Obviously we said no, but they insisted two times more. Very bad service, slow ans unpleasant experience. Not recommended at all.

Only paying online on the terrace really annoys me, even though I really like paying by card. Giving an email address to order without a waiter pisses me off.

Good food and friendly service. We'd gladly come back. The downside was that we paid €8.50 for 0.8 liters of water, even though we had four beers and a quarter of a glass of wine for our meal. Poor Germany.

For my birthday, I received a voucher for two (via GetyourGuide) for a night watchman tour, including a meal and a drink each at the Schankhaus. We sat right next to the Frauenkirche in perfect weather. We received a selection of four dishes in advance via email. My husband chose the Sauerbraten with dumplings, and I chose the spiced meat, along with a beer and a glass of wine. The waiters were busy; both the great outdoor terrace and the cozy restaurant were very busy. Nevertheless, they were on the ball and really friendly! The food was very good overall; the red cabbage was definitely overseasoned and therefore not tasty on its own. The house bread was amazing. All in all, the selection in Dresden is huge, but I would definitely go back to try all the other dishes! Unfortunately, I can't comment on the price because of the voucher.

Bit of an “aggressive” service, maybe due to its touristy nature. But what was disappointing is waiters literally asking how much you want to tip so that they can punch it into the card machine for you. Odd for a country where tips are completely voluntary. Food is nice, portions not great (had a Rostbrätel).

We visited Freiberger Schankhaus in December 2024 during the Christmas market, and among all the restaurant options in Dresden, this was by far our best dining experience in the city. This is a great example of an authentic German pub: excellent local beer, delicious traditional dishes, and a cozy, inviting atmosphere right in the heart of Neumarkt, next to the Frauenkirche. The decor is tasteful and rustic, creating a warm and welcoming space — especially perfect for winter. The menu isn’t very extensive, but it’s well curated, featuring typical German cuisine along with a few international options. We went specifically to try the traditional pork knuckle, and it exceeded expectations — flavorful, perfectly seasoned, and beautifully presented. Prices are reasonable for a tourist area. Service was efficient and straightforward in the German style, but we were lucky to be helped by a very friendly and attentive team. Highly recommended, whether you're looking for a full meal or just a place to enjoy a good local beer in a charming and authentic setting.

The Haxen is really delicious!👍👍👍 The outside is crispy, but this is the first time I've had such a delicious crisp!! The sausage I ordered with it was also really delicious. A bit disappointed. While having trouble reserving through the OpenTable app, I call the place and asked for a table. Nothing available for the same evening I was told. Shortly after the app decided to corporate and since it showed up with available tables the same evening I decided to book one regardless. We arrived on time for the reservation and sure enough, a table was there waiting for us. A very friendly and english speaking waiter took our order. We ordered a pork knuckle for sharing and it arrived pretty fast. Unfortunately it was the most disappointing knuckle I've had in Germany (and I've had a few around the country) None of the skin was crunchy and the fat not properly melted, making it feel like one big sad gummy bear. Flavor of the meat was ok though, but not the most juicy either. The potato dumplings also did lack a bit of flavor. Once done we asked for the bill and said that we would pay by card. The waiter then went on with other stuff. After a while waiting the same waiter came back asking if we would like some more beer/drinks. We kindly refused and again asked for the bill. Again he went on during other stuff and after a while he finally remembered and brought the machine to pay. Atmosphere is in top, it's a good looking place in a good location, but I wouldn't come back for food here, unfortunately.

We were hoping for a good schweinshaxe (pork knuckle), but the one we got was the most disappointing that we have tried in Germany. It was delivered fast and the skin was completely soft, like a gummy bear.

We really liked the atmosphere in the outdoor area - the wooden picnic benches in particular invite you to relax. You sit really nicely and immediately feel comfortable. The menu offers a perfectly adequate selection and the prices are absolutely reasonable. We had different experiences with the service - it fluctuated between good and really excellent, depending on who was serving. Unfortunately, the curds were convincing in terms of taste, but were disappointing in terms of consistency. The outer edge was so hard it was difficult to cut through with cutlery, which makes us think they may have been pre-made and then reheated - a shame as the potential is definitely there. We would definitely come back for a drink and the lovely outdoor area, Probably somewhere else to eat.

Die Speisekarte versprach Klassiker wie Sächsischer Sauerbraten, Quarkkeulchen und Schweinshaxe. Was wir bekamen, war allerdings eher eine kulinarische Zeitreise in die Schulspeisung der 90er – mit Betonung auf “Speisung”, nicht “Genuss”. Der Sauerbraten schwamm in einer Soße die geschmacklich irgendwo zwischen Brühwürfel und Verzweiflung lag. Die Klöße dazu waren offenbar Tiefkühlware, außen matschig, innen hart – eine architektonische Meisterleistung des Grauens. Die Schweinshaxe, auf die man lt. Karte hätte 30 Minuten warten müssen, wurde nach 10 Minuten serviert. Sie war kein Fest – sondern Fast-Food im trockensten Sinne. .

We were here with a group and were able to reserve a table at short notice. That should have made us suspicious about Dresden's old town. Mediocre food and small portions, for a bar we were left stranded several times and were only able to order after we had to wait minutes for the staff. The crowning glory was that we were checked in three quarters of an hour before closing time and arriving guests were turned away. We were also denied a final lap. And that on a Friday evening. The opening times stated are therefore incorrect. Clear recommendation for the Augustiner at the Frauenkirche, better beer, food is also possible late in the evening and a full house with attentive waiters. The Augustiner saved us from a messed up evening in the Freiberg pub. We won't be coming back.
