FREA in Berlin

Absolutely love FREA and go at most big occasions (birthdays, anniversaries, etc). Great vegan menu, beautiful and tasty dishes that do NOT leave you hungry at the end of dinner! Staff is kind and attentive, making the whole experience absolutely worth every cent.

I honestly can't understand why the restaurant is so hyped: the service staff is unprofessional, the food is pre-cooked and there is no way to respond flexibly to intolerances. From my experience, I expect a lot more from a restaurant in this price range that deserves the name. Due to the location, you can apparently forego real quality here and unfortunately you do. Very unfortunate. I like to spend more money on good food in a good restaurant. But this is all about being seen and not about presenting an experience appropriate to the price range. Well, there seems to be enough people for whom that's enough. In my opinion, it's unfortunately a complete waste of money and resources and therefore only faked in the long term. Definitely never again.

The food is delicious. But the service is very poor. 1. We waited a long time for the waiter 2. We were asked to delete the video we made for ourselves when we were presented with food. Overall disappointed with the Michelin rated restaurant.

My girlfriend took me out for a very special dinner. You have to make a reservation and it's quite pricy (but 100% worth it!). We had a five course menu and drinks. I enjoyed it a lot! Every bite was full of taste and I will never forget the experience.

We have been there several times and find it very pleasant every time. The food was great and the service staff today were particularly friendly. My absolute recommendation is the non-alcoholic accompaniment - super exciting drinks paired with the respective course. I only know this quality from FREA :)

Paid €260 for 2 Food: good as usual, but that real wow effect wasn't there on my second visit. Service: and this is where I get emotional. I completed hotel and restaurant training myself. How can it be that you are served by 6(!) waitresses with a 4-course menu? How do you build a bond over a lovely evening here? For me, 40% is the waiter/waitress and the service at fine dining. It was amazing at Brasserie November. The waiter became a friend. Here it's just working through the menus and reciting them correctly. Afterwards, when my friend said that she didn't want anything very acidic: 'Try it, you'll like it.' I didn't like it and the waitress said: 'Sorry, but now it's poured!' . It continued with that Feeling like there was an absolute eviction atmosphere. 8:45 p.m Was our table and we raced through the menu. Those who had finished work sat at the bar and ate staff food and folded napkins and people were always looking at our table. At 10:50 p.m. even though you eat until midnight? The jackets were taken away and then you could search for them. The menu was changed (starter at the end) and no one was informed. All in all, quite a disappointment and that's annoying at such a very attractive price. PS: the time before that I was with a friend who is closely connected to the owners. The place was nice, but the food was very average. We had a 3-course menu and the starter and the main tasted kind of the same. Quite disappointing for the money paid. Also the waiting staff was not very friendly, rather cold and transactional interaction.

Great restaurant! Strong recommendation to go there and experience delicious food. Many of the dishes come different from what you would expect. That's great and exciting. Kudos to the chef! They even prepared the ramp for my wheelchair in advance. I only reserved the table mentioning the wheelchair and when I arrived there, the ramp was already in place!

Fine Dining with zero waste and up to 5 courses! Great place to indulge yourself.

Very nice space, nice lighting, and we had a nice evening, but tonight the food did not nearly live up to our expectations. On the upside, we had very good wine, and, we liked the atmosphere. The dishes were not convincing, neither the textures nor the flavours were exciting, no wow effect whatsoever- much different than last time. Disappointing experience, but maybe they just had a bad day…

The shop is beautifully done. Acoustics are good and you feel very comfortable. The service is friendly and attentive, but the explanations about the food were presented somewhat carelessly, quickly and unclearly. While the starters were really unusual, interesting and tasted great, I found the main course a bit too acidic and the peach dessert a bit boring (my first association was a peach baby jar xD). The non-alcoholic accompaniment to the meal is a great offer and highly recommended.

A super innovative restaurant. The wines go wonderfully with the menu, but I was so impressed by my partner's non-alcoholic accompaniment that I will order this on my next visit. The warm, fast and always courteous team deserved a huge tip. I have to honestly admit that the service was so excellent that it should actually get 10 stars. I found the ambience to be very pleasant, the waiters scurry calmly through the restaurant, the noise is absorbed by cleverly chosen decorations.

Chic shop with pleasant service at eye level. For us it was definitely an exciting culinary experience - actually completely out of our financial price range but definitely worth it for a special occasion. The selection of dishes is small but fine (3 starters, 2 main courses, 2 desserts) and can be combined in different menu sizes. Our absolute favorite was the celery ice cream dessert - really great! Our waitress was super friendly and took good care of us.

if you want to pamper yourself, or perfect for a date! I can only recommend it wholeheartedly. The concept is just wonderful.We had the five-course menu, once with wine and once with the non-alcoholic option, both delicious. Excellent service! I even got a birthday candle:)

Great all around! Innovative flavors, low key, warm and inviting atmosphere. Friendly and knowledgeable service. Our toddler loved it too.

Nice location, attentive and friendly service, wine pairing was matching the dishes with good wines but not too exciting. Food was overall good but only good - very few wow or unexpected moments, these mostly related to the sauces, they're great. But besides, a bit disappointed in terms of complexity and taste. Size of the dishes in total (4 courses) rather small as well. All in all good but not spectacular, and quite high price for what you get.

Meine Erwartungen wurden bei weitem Übertroffen. Das Essen war atemberaubend gut, toll aufeinander abgestimmt und wunderschön angerichtet. Jeder Gang wurde sehr liebevoll präsentiert. Die Mitarbeiter waren alle mit Leib und Seele dabei und außerordentlich aufmerksam. Trotz der gehobenen, erstklassigen Küche, war es eine sehr lockere Atmosphäre und man hat sich wahnsinnig willkommen gefühlt. Es war ein rund um gelungener Abend und wir kommen gerne wieder.

Immer wieder schön zu besonderen Anlässen. Wir gehen meist zum Geburtstag und letztmalig auch zu Silvester ins Frea. Sind immer begeistert vom Essen und vom Service. Mit der Erhöhung der Preise haben wir gerechnet, leider war das Silvester-Menü dann lange nicht mehr so gut wie die Menüs zuvor. Bitte bleibt bei der Qualität!!

It was my birthday present from me to myself. I really enjoyed the food and the wine. It was extraordinary and I loved the whole experience. We were sitting outside, and this was only a bit the downside as it was really loud next to the street and not easy to keep up a conversation.

Very interesting tasting menu, pleasant and helpful staff (it was nice to hear the native language). A very interesting wine list.

The first two problems are the fixed menu and very high prices. These are of course forgivable if the food is great. In fact the starter was very very good which unfortunately gave us a false confidence. The main course was a cannelloni with a tough pancake-like texture and very bland filling. The desert, a chocolate cake, had no flavour. I can only say: if you are considering going here, please look instead for reviews of a Middle Eastern vegan place in Berlin, "Vegano Mezo". That place is the opposite of the Frea in every possible way. Beautiful, complex, intriguing food with subtle, authentic flavours. A very humble owner and environment, as opposed to pretentiousness so extreme that it seemed like a comedic parody of pretentiousness. I would almost say the Frea is worth going to in the way you would go to see a bad movie - just to see what deluded pseudo-cultured pretentiousness (combined with poor food!) really looks like. But, it would be very expensive entertainment, so not recommended! Deutsch: Die ersten beiden Probleme sind das festgelegte Menü und die extrem hohen Preise. Das könnte man ja noch verzeihen, wenn das Essen richtig gut wäre. Der Vorspeise hat uns da auch erstmal Hoffnung gemacht, die war wirklich sehr, sehr gut. Leider hat uns das in eine falsche Sicherheit gewogen. Der Hauptgang, eine Art Cannelloni, hatte eine zähe, pfannkuchenartige Konsistenz und eine völlig fade Füllung. Das Dessert, ein Schokokuchen, hatte überhaupt keinen Geschmack. Also ganz ehrlich: Wenn ihr überlegt, hierher zu gehen, schaut euch lieber die Bewertungen vom nahöstlichen, veganen Laden „Vegano Mezo“ in Berlin an. Dieser Laden ist in jeder Hinsicht das Gegenteil vom Frea. Wunderschönes, komplexes und interessantes Essen mit feinen, authentischen Aromen. Ein sehr bodenständiger Besitzer und ein entspanntes Ambiente, im krassen Gegensatz zu der übertriebenen Arroganz im Frea, die schon fast wie eine Parodie wirkt. Man könnte fast sagen, dass es sich lohnt, ins Frea zu gehen, so wie man sich einen richtig schlechten Film anschaut – einfach, um mal zu sehen, wie völlig verblendete pseudo-kultivierte Arroganz (gepaart mit schlechtem Essen!) aussieht. Aber dafür wäre es dann doch zu teuer, also eher nicht zu empfehlen!

Excellent presentation of the various dishes. Great service and nice restaurant setting. I’d only reduce the temptation to mix in accompanying sauces or purées, simply because that made it feel a bit heavy when you select a 4 course menu. Totally recommend this wonderful restaurant!

I've known Frea since it opened and have always loved eating at your place, think the concept is great and have always found the service to be excellent. But yesterday I was really disappointed. You've really slacked off, my dears. I'm pretty sure you still use good ingredients, but the food isn't nearly as good as it once was. Both the wines and the non-alcoholic drinks sometimes didn't really go well with the course. The cucumber starter was still quite good, but the croquette was just fried mush. The canneloni looked pretty, but unfortunately the taste wasn't really good. You could also make the chocolate mousse better... And unfortunately the service tried hard, but couldn't really explain the food or the wine very well, and it didn't matter whether it was English or German, in any case there was no explanation. We still had a nice evening with you. And I'm writing this in such detail because I actually think you're great and hope that you can get it done again. I'll definitely be back soon to see if this was just a blip... Best regards Betti

Es war ein besonderer, leckerer und schöner Abend bei FREA - der Service war super, sehr freundliche Kellner, draußen saßen wir schön, das Essen war besonders und lecker. Wirklich tolle Kreationen. Schön ist auch, dass es ein hochwertiges Restaurant mit Auszeichnung ist, aber dennoch bodenständig und man sich auch in einem legeren Outfit dort wohl fühlt.

Ristorante superconsigliato. Abbiamo preso il menù da 3 portate, il cibo era ottimo, tutto vegano. Io ed il mio compagno siamo intolleranti al lattosio, quindi perfetto come menù. I piatti erano molto particolari e ricercati, ma il gusto era strepitoso. Personale molto gentile e pronto a dare qualsiasi spiegazione. Se passate da Berlino e avete voglia di gusti diversi passate da Frea.

Had a lovely evening at FREA. We loved the food and the atmosphere. However some comments about the service. The reason I am deducting a star from the service is the growing culture of forced tipping that you kinda feel forced into upon paying by card. We got three options with different percentage and makes you you get shamed into having to choose one. This makes tipping feels mandatory rather than a token of appreciation from the customer. To be fair, it is not only in FREA but in many restaurants in Berlin. As a very conscious restaurant, I would have expected it otherwise at FREA

Der Empfang und der weitere Service waren dezent, sehr freundlich und aufmerksam,ohne aufdringlich zu sein. Die Speisen waren wunderbar aufeinander abgestimmt, sehr phantasievoll und außerordentlich wohlschmeckend. Der Geschmack der vegetarischen Kompositionen war oft eine Überraschung. Auch wenn man auf die Weinbegleitung verzichten musste, gab es mehrere alkoholfreie Alternativen. Eine sehr sehr interessante, empfehlenswerte neue Erfahrung.

Ambience simple and not very appealing. You score with creative dishes and an aesthetic, appetite-stimulating plate arrangement. Tastes good, although sometimes too salty. Portion sizes are quite small, but after a 5-course meal for €125 including a non-alcoholic drink, you won't leave the restaurant hungry. The children's menu for €20 is also positive, but it remains questionable whether the dishes will suit the tastes of young guests. Sometimes long waiting times between individual courses. Service friendly.

Visited Frea on Monday, July 8th. We had high expectations due to the restaurant's high ratings and its mention in the Michelin Guide. The place itself is lovely—well-decorated with a nice ambiance, and the staff was friendly. However, we were quite disappointed with the food. We had the 4 course menu. The flavors were overwhelmingly salty and acidic, making the dishes hard to enjoy- specially the cauliflower. After seeing other reviews, we realized this issue wasn't unique to our experience. This was unexpected given the restaurant's reputation. Cocktails were good but we were not convinced by the dessert flavours. It might be just our personal taste… Additionally, my boyfriend had mentioned it was my birthday when booking and was expecting at least a candle in the dessert. For a restaurant of this range, we expected not only a friendly staff but much more refined flavors and attention to detail.

Very tasty food, you don't even notice that it's plant-based and you really don't miss anything. Nice service, good wine. Any time.

Es war mein erster Besuch im FREA und nicht mein letzter.... es war ein absolut stimmiges Erlebnis

Unbedingt mit Getränkebegleitung wählen, absolut top. Einziger kleiner Verbesserungsvorschlag: wir hätten uns gewünscht, von einer oder maximal zwei verschiedenen Personen bedient zu werden, wirkte so etwas hektisch. Davon abgesehen ein sehr schöner Abend und wir kommen sicher wieder.

Es war ein ganz toller Abend mit einem sehr tollen Ambiente. Das Essen war hervorragend und sehr gut abgestimmt. Ich kann es nur jedem empfehlen hier essen zu gehen.

The recommended 4-course menu was so delicious and unique that my partner and I came back to try the rest of the menu the following night. The non-alcohol pairing was also very creative and went well with all of the food. There are many vegan restaurants to choose from in Berlin, but if you have a budget for high-end food I would highly suggest stopping by this place at least once during your stay.

Wir hatten das Frea schon die ganze Zeit auf der Liste und war nun gestern Abend zusammen mit der Familie endlich einmal dort. Das Essen war hervorragend und der Service sehr sehr freundlich. Die vegane Küche wurde hier sehr kreativ und geschmackvoll interpretiert. Alles war da und nichts hat gefehlt.

Unfortunately many savoury dishes were way to salty. And the mockhails too sweet… Staff was super friendly and really liked the menu concept where you can decide what you want to mix (starters / desserts or mains / deserts…)

Service and ambience was good. The food was plated very nice. However the flavor of all the dishes was very one dimensional. The overpowering flavor across all dishes was salt. We felt the chef should let the other ingredients and flavor shine instead of relying so heavily on salt.

Pickle dish was great. Cocktails were great. The rest of the food was mostly incoherent and too salty. Especially the courgette sauce and the filling of the cannelloni we had to leave on the plate. The croquette didn’t need finishing salt, but this one i would have enjoyed otherwise.

We had a very nice evening at Frea. The service was very attentive and with the 3-course menu we also received a gazpacho with homemade bread as a greeting from the house. A sorbet and a praline were also served at the end of the menu. You can freely choose between 3-5 courses (from a menu that includes 7 dishes). We had two starters and a main course. The starters were very fine and of great sophistication. Unfortunately, none of the main courses here could keep up. It was still a very good vegan dish, but the starters left me wanting more. There is definitely still room for improvement with the current main courses. In summary, we would like to come back.

Each course impresses with its taste and composition. Very friendly service, nice atmosphere. Completely successful and deserves all the awards.

Our family visited Frea on Saturday 20th July and had a wonderful evening. The vegan food was fantastic, which came ion the form of tasting menu of 3, 4 or 5 servings, we opted for the 3 servings which was enough for us, bearing in mind that they provided free warm bread, a pre dessert, and a treat after the dessert. The service was amazing, very attentive and informative, giving an explanation of each course as they arrived at the table. The ambience was lovely. Overall, a great evening, and yes it is quite expensive, but thoroughly worthwhile all the same. We will visit again when next in Berlin.

Incredible and unique experience! I recommend to go for course menu + wine pairing. We left the table uplifted and surprised how good the food and wine was! Definitely coming back for croquettes :)

Unfortunately, I can't understand the enthusiasm in some of the reviews here. There is a huge gap between expectations and reality - with the exception of the price, the desired level is unfortunately not met. The food is good and confident - but in terms of taste there is simply nothing special in each course - components are masked by a lot of sauces - the interaction does not trigger any surprise, but is unfortunately rather boring and predictable. With every course I actually asked myself what exactly was supposed to be achieved here... the almost raw zucchini was the downlight of the evening for me - I really didn't like it at all, I almost never have something like that - and I can too Somehow I can't imagine that this would be wanted....on top of that, dry bread from the day before, an hour's wait between courses, and piles of raspberry water ice cream from the freezer as a temporary greeting are almost an impertinence at the price level. The service makes an effort, but there seems to be a lack of real knowledge about the courses - a roughly memorized text is simply not enough here. The price is absolutely not justified for plates of this quality that do not contain more expensive products such as fish or meat. The same applies to most wines. All in all, more appearance than reality for me - I wouldn't come back again, im sorry.

The decision to celebrate our wedding at FREA was worth its weight in gold. The arrangement in advance was uncomplicated and professional. In the evening, our waitress fulfilled our every wish and we were able to see how this fantastic menu was conjured up for us in the open kitchen. This was rounded off by the chef's personal explanations for each course. We were a group with a large number of NON-VEGETARIANS and everyone told us that they did not expect such a taste experience.

My friends and I had the pleasure of visiting the restaurant with a large group on a Friday evening. Almost all of us opted for the 4-course meal for €73, accompanied by several bottles of wine. Unfortunately, with the exception of the croquettes, which were quite passable, the overall dining experience left a lot to be desired. The fermented flavors and overly acidic sauces were unfortunately completely mismatched. The home-baked bread was so hard that one had serious concerns about the integrity of his teeth. The main course, consisting of a broccoli dish, as well as the dessert, were simply disappointing and did not reach anywhere near the level expected. Another inconvenience was the hour wait between the third and fourth courses. To tide us over, we were given a greeting from the kitchen, which turned out to be a lump of ice with raspberries - hardly what you would expect from a restaurant in this price range. The service was friendly, but not appropriate for the ambitious concept and the considerable price. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend the restaurant. It conveys a lot of appearance, but little of being. Interestingly, the restaurant's zero-waste concept is justified by the fact that food waste is composted and returned to suppliers - essentially a classic organic waste bin. P.S.: The wines are completely overpriced.

Staff: tremendously friendly and competent, everyone ready to answer all questions politely with confidence and expertise. Food: delicious, thoughtful and surprisingly vegan (as a vegetarian, was surprised and delighted by the non-necessity of cheese, eggs or other animal products), full confidence even animal eaters will be delighted! Kitchen: set yourself at the counter and watch the choreographed dance of the chefs, best seat in the house! FREA gets all of the stars.

Edit: visited again last night (a Wednesday in July 2024) and it was highly disappointing. We ordered at 18:30 and didn’t get our first dish until 19:10 (40 min wait!) We were starving. Expect to wait 30 min at least between dishes, even for the dessert. The food yesterday was extremely salty (my wife usually adds salt to everything but couldn’t finish her dishes) and we heard other people complain about the same thing. We got money back for one dish per person but honestly it didn’t help with the experience and I can’t imagine we’ll come back. Which is sad, cause Berlin needs high end vegan places. We were at frea 5 times: three times our experience was chaotic, not tasty and the staff was pretty rude. Once was good and one was excellent (my review below). The drinks still are the best thing about the place. The place is too pricey to not have a predictable experience. (280 euros + tip for three people). —— Precious comment: Had the most wonderful birthday dinner there. It was the best meal I’ve had in a long time. I still dream about the drinks I had there… It was all creative and delicious. The place is gorgeous and the service was lovely.

The ambience and service were very good. We were greeted and seated very warmly and quickly and a later change of seating from outside to inside was carried out without any problems. We decided on a 3 and 4-course menu so that we could try all the dishes once. Our highlight was the eggplant coquette. The other starters simply didn't convince us personally. The biggest disappointment was the dumplings in the main course. In retrospect, we can no longer tell what they were made of because the watery infusion drowned out the entire taste and they fell into disrepair. In most dishes, the product could not stand on its own due to the many spices (e.g. spinach, cauliflower). All in all, we had a nice evening, despite the unconvincing food. We would like to give the restaurant another chance with a new menu!!

It was a great experience. If I could I would eat there once a month. Not exaggerating, I dreamed of it afterwards, vivid dreams of tasting fine prepared vegetables and mushrooms, and exotic wine. Very grateful that some people can prepare vegan food with so much talent. Good location.

Unfortunately a disappointment. The concept is great, but some people are probably willing to pay for it when I read the reviews. The "summer menu" was monotonous - apart from the "croquette", vegetables were steamed throughout the morning, then prepared and/or served cold/lukewarm to order (we were through after 60 minutes), and everything unfortunately tasted consistently Asian, salty and sour, as if the chef fell into a fish sauce pot as a child. The cauliflower was on the verge of being edible, it was so salty. All the aisles screamed “see, vegan doesn’t have to be bland”. It was no longer even possible to suspect that vegetables could have their own taste. But the staff topped it. Rarely have I heard such a boring rant. Questions were ignored with a dirty look. Well, I also figured out that the "crumble" in the spinach (the only wow experience) was probably some kind of tempura seaweed balls. Pros: The cheesecake was fantastic, rarely have I had something so good as a dessert. The Riesling was also a discovery (even if the waitress said it came from a "crazy Spaniard", well, almost...)

Beautiful presentation of dishes, all vegan, organic with a strong focus on sustainability (zero waste policy) and local ingredients. I had dinner here for my birthday: the 4 course set dinner menu and my partner tried a few other dishes. The pistachio ice-cream was by far our favourite dessert! The waiters were tentative and engaging. To make it more affordable we opted to go without drinks pairing and instead ordered a mocktail, a cocktail and sparkling water which was perfectly fine. I had the Grape Hibiscus mocktail with thyme-syrup which was delicious and refreshing! My partner had the Coral Mezcalita. Overall a really nice experience. Of course you are paying more at a restaurant like this, but it’s a worthwhile treat for the experience. The restaurant also has an adjacent bakery for bread lovers.

Wie immer top. Toller Service und unglaublich leckeres Essen. Ich komme dafür immer gerne nach Berlin. Man fühlt sich wie zu Hause. Kann ich jedem nur empfehlen dahin zu gehen!!!

Every effort is made here to ensure that guests have a wonderful evening. Even if you sit outside directly on the main street, there are plants as a privacy screen, tables covered with white tablecloths, and very nice service. There is only one menu. The vision and approach of Frea with vegan, sustainability etc. is really great and exemplary. At the same time, you should be aware that it is a little more expensive. Food was great, nicely prepared and simply worth a visit.

Great food and staff. Was disappointed in the manager (woman in black clothing). I altered my reservation to one day sooner and received a confirmation, but when I showed up we found out the alteration didn’t come through in the system and they were completely booked (except for outside). We did not receive an apology or any sign of sorrow, at one point she even rolled her eyes at us. Would expect more from a high end restaurant.

Richtig lecker- sowohl Speisen als auch antialkoholische Menübegleitung. Sehr zuvorkommendes Personal und tolles Ambiente. Etwas laut war nur der Fernseher des Nachbarrestaurants, aber es ist eben gerade EM. Es hat unseren tollen Besuch nicht geschmälert und wir werden wiederkommen! Vegan und Zero-waste fallen auch bei der Vielfalt der Gerichte gar nicht auf! Weiter so!

Super Atmosphäre, super nettes Personal, Essen top

We went back to Frea a second time in 3 days. A high point of our week in Berlin.

Das Essen ist Genuss auf höchster Ebene, gibt dem Körper angenehme Energie und ist ein besonderes Erlebnis!

Tolles Konzept, aber wir finden, man zahlt etwas zu sehr die Ideologie mit. Es war unser erster Besuch, aber wir hatten überraschendere und weniger gefälligere Gänge erwartet. Der Blumenkohl war „hart am Salz“. Etwas pauschal gesagt, waren die meisten Gänge wenig subtil gewürzt. Wir haben uns einmal durch die gesamte Karte gefuttert und wunderten uns etwas über das fehlende Spiel mit Temperaturen oder zB Röstaromen. Positiv erinnern werden wir uns an die Seetang-Tempura, den Getreide-crumble beim Kohlrabi, die Knödel, die Ananas zur Pistazie.

A vegan evening? Am I getting fed up? Will I like this? In short: yes, very much! An all-round perfect service in a beautiful restaurant and lots of delicious food! It was exciting to see what you could conjure up on your plate without using animal products. Thank you for that!

This was easily one of the most enjoyable meals of my life. I would come back here over and over again if I lived in Berlin. Few restaurants can pull off the vegan fine dining routine as well as FREA does!

The ambience is very nice, unfortunately the menu designed was not my cup of tea and the service took a very long time. There were 30 minute breaks between courses, which shouldn't be the norm. There was also a certain taste factor that was repeated again and again in every dish except the dessert.

My first fine dining experience! Loooooved the server. The food was delicious and I loved hearing about what was in each dish and having my mind blown every time I took a bite. Great vibes too. Felt super comfortable as a queer couple.
