There was a delicious sea bream on today's menu. Highly recommended 😀. The second dish, the pan-fried fish, was also very tasty.

We came here spontaneously for lunch. There was plenty of space. The food was good and the service was good too. Good value for money.

I ate the grilled classic at the snack bar on the back side. It was delicious, and the remoulade was amazing! The price and quality were excellent.

The food was really delicious, the fried potatoes were fantastic, and the service was very friendly. However, the decor is more reminiscent of a cafeteria than a restaurant.

The "Helgoländer Fischpalette" on their menu comes with three different fried fish, potato salad, and sauce. The fish, sauce, and potato salad were all delicious. It costs 20.90 euros. It's definitely worth it.

The fish is average for the price. The potato salad is overly flavored. It's not a child-friendly establishment at all. They warned our 19-month-old to be quiet. I understand that adults make a lot of noise and get warned, but warning a baby who's not even two years old is completely unacceptable. We're already trying to keep him quiet and distract him so he doesn't disturb others.

A very, very nice restaurant, specially driven from Saxony-Anhalt (Mansfeld Südharz)! Very tasty food and very friendly staff.

If you value high-quality service, you'll get a great deal here 😂 2 out of 3 servers were so upset... A whole bunch of incorrect dishes were served, missing, or delivered to the wrong table. Glasses were broken, and the payment was a complete disaster. But hey, the food tasted good when it was finally served properly. The chefs and the bar staff eventually took over the service and prevented anything worse from happening. Who knows what else happened after we left? The evening was still long 🤣

Good, traditionally prepared fish – rather fatty and hearty, as is typical of the region. I expected a bit more from the fish platter with gurnard, which was particularly advertised on the menu. The frozen potato wedges and the lukewarm hollandaise sauce from the carton somewhat tarnished the otherwise good impression of the fish.

Super delicious fish (Helgoland fish platter) and super friendly service! The fried potatoes could have used a bit more fried meat. The potato salad is dressed with onions, vinegar, and oil (no mayonnaise). We enjoyed it. Super delicious "Grevensteiner" on tap (Veltins), unfortunately a bit pricey. Quaint, simple decor. Direct view into the kitchen! I highly recommend it!

I ate here about a month ago. The waitress was incredibly unwelcoming and told us to finish our drinks ”please” half an hour (!!) before closing time. As we were just about to get up to leave I saw a MOUSE walking across the floor. An absolutely disgusting experience.

We went to the restaurant based on a recommendation. We received a warm welcome, and they made an effort to look after us. Unfortunately, my meal wasn't 100% perfect. The wolffish wasn't my favorite.

We were there last Friday. Probably because it was midweek, it was very quiet. I was very happy when I went to the restroom with my 4-year-old daughter and we found a stool with a toilet adapter. There's also a changing table, and they provide diapers and wipes if needed (we had one for our baby). She also received drawings and colored pencils at the table. I know that this isn't necessary for everyone, nor is it a given, but as a mother, I really appreciate that they think of their little ones. Now, the food and service: My husband ordered the large plate and I ordered one with cod. We chose the fish nuggets for my daughter, mainly because of the fries, as she ate some of my fish. That was fine with me because the portions were also very generous. For dessert, we had apple strudel and red fruit compote. All the dishes were ready quickly and tasted very good. Since my husband grew up near Kiel and I come from the Mediterranean region, we are used to eating a lot of fresh fish and the restaurant met our expectations.

Actually, it's our favorite fish restaurant. But on September 1st, I think they lost. Seven of us wanted to eat there at 6:00 PM. It's open until 8:00 PM. We were told they couldn't serve us anymore because the waitress was alone and couldn't manage. I think it's extremely bad to turn away seven guests who were willing to spend almost €200 and who came into town just for this two hours before closing time.

The lunch menu is highly recommended.

It's very small and narrow, but it's very cute. The food is delicious. The place is so small that you have to get the service yourself and return the empty plate. I had the whiting fillet and I liked it very much. If I were to come to Bremen again, I would definitely want to eat fish here again.

We've enjoyed going to Knurrhahn for many years, and my father has done so since childhood. It was part of a ritual that was part of a visit to Bremen. But the last time we went, the place stank obscenely of bad fish and was somewhat sewer-like. When we asked the waiter about it, we were met with a look of incomprehension. So we decided against eating there.

We had the large pollock fillet with fried fish, once with potato salad and once with fried potatoes. I can only say it was excellent. The best pollock fillet ever. A great recommendation from the Berliner from the Bremen city tour. My recommendation goes further...

Great, simple restaurant, the potato salad and the remoulade were very good for my taste and the fish on the Heligoland fish platter was also good.

The best fish sandwich I've had in Bremen. The fish was incredibly fresh and juicy, and the breading was crispy and warm. Truly an 11 out of 10.

The restaurant doesn't open until 12 p.m. It seemed as if the staff were only just getting ready. Nevertheless, the service was very friendly. The fish was okay, but a bit greasy. The light in the women's restroom couldn't be turned on, and since there were no windows, you were standing in the dark.

Food: The fried fish was delightfully fresh and delicious – nothing to complain about. Unfortunately, the service was completely out of character! The waitress on September 12, 2025, at lunchtime: unfriendly and surly: While serving the drinks, she simply threw the beer mat meant for the guest sitting opposite across the table. A simple question about the lunch menu was dismissed with "it's written outside," as if any inquiry were an annoying intrusion. The "negative highlight" of the service experience was the plated dish: Instead of simply placing it in front of the guest, it was held across the table – the expectation was clearly that the guest would receive the plate at head height and introduce themselves. It was obviously too much effort for the waitress to walk the few steps around the table to place the dish directly in front of the guest (there was plenty of space). Overall, a desert of service that unfortunately overshadowed the positive impression of the meal. Ambience: cool, simple seating

A casual restaurant with delicious, fresh fish. It's a place where you can find seafood. They offer fish prepared with various marinades. The fish and shrimp soups are also excellent. Prices are a bit higher than average, but worth it. I recommend it.

I was there with friends/acquaintances. We had pre-ordered because it seemed advisable on a Saturday – especially with a Bremen soccer game against... whoever else. The young waiter initially brought pollock instead of regular salmon for three of us, but this was rectified immediately. My plaice was fine, and the buttered potatoes were truly delicious. All in all: top-notch service – unfortunately, you could only tip in cash.

Incredibly delicious fish sandwiches at reasonable prices. The fried fish is as tender as butter, deliciously breaded, and the remoulade is a dream. The herring sandwich is also impressive. A plus point for offering Pepsi instead of Coke 😄

We were at the Knurhann fish restaurant and were about to order. When my wife politely asked for a restroom, the waitress reacted rudely, speaking sharply and dismissing the question as "stupid." We were shocked and left the restaurant. That's not how you treat guests.

According to reviews online, this is the place to get the best fish to go. And yes, I can confirm it! Not only the various sandwiches, but also the fish 'n' chips are exceptionally delicious!

The tastiest fish dinner in town.

We can't say this was our best experience: we waited quite a long time to be served. Meanwhile, the tables next to us were all dissatisfied with their food (poorly cooked, missing ingredients). We realized when our dishes arrived: the hollandaise sauce was missing. When we pointed this out to the waiter, he told us it was our fault because we had asked for spinach... which is false. The food wasn't delicious, but it wasn't bad either. When it came time to pay, the three servers were on break, and the owner, who wasn't friendly, told us to wait for them to return. We waited 10 minutes. Based on our experience and those of neighboring tables (another customer came to wish us luck!), I cannot recommend this restaurant.

The food was ordered, but unfortunately, instead of the fried potatoes ordered, they served potato salad with the fish. The fish was only lukewarm. The taste was only mediocre. The ambiance is also typical of Asbach. Well, another institution that's shutting itself down.

Poor Quality & Lack of Competence There were obvious problems in the kitchen – even the neighboring table was served incomplete dishes and people complained about long waits. I ordered the Gurnard Fish Platter (a house recommendation). However, what was served was mainly a large portion of potato wedges and mushrooms, but only a few pieces of fish. The waitress herself was visibly irritated, rolled her eyes, and brought two more small pieces – one of which was undercooked. We immediately complained about this issue to the server. Furthermore, the hollandaise sauce was missing, which I had to get myself. My companion's fish was partly fried, and partly undercooked. Another table also returned a plate. Overall, the staff seemed annoyed and overwhelmed. Nevertheless, the mistakes could have been overlooked – had they been more accommodating. We asked for a price reduction (approx. €70 including drinks) due to the significant deficiencies. Instead of understanding, however, the manager told us that this wasn't possible and blamed us – with the comment that we should have spoken up right away when something was wrong with the food. Even though we had reported all the issues immediately and directly. Conclusion: 0 points for quality 0 points for service It's a shame – with a little more consideration, I could have left a fair review despite the problems. This leaves only disappointment.

Unfortunately, I can't recommend this restaurant at all! We ordered a coastal platter and the gurnard platter (a house recommendation). After a long wait, the food arrived. The salad and sauces were missing. The gurnard plate, the house fish plate (over €30!), had more mushrooms and potatoes than fish. When the meal was finished (it was only lukewarm by then), we discovered that the fish was still raw inside. The plate was returned. A new plate was prepared, this one overcooked and barely seasoned. Unfortunately, we had to return a large portion of both dishes. The waiters were visibly stressed, as we weren't the only table so dissatisfied. When paying, we said we were having a hard time paying the regular price for the meal. After consulting with the manager, the waiter told us this wasn't possible, as we had eaten part of it and should have complained earlier. Even though we had done so. Further consultation was also unsuccessful. The service staff tried their best, but my understanding ends when guests are told that it's their own fault if they ate any of the food.

I ordered herring with fried potatoes. The herring wasn't tender and was simply salty. The fried potatoes were crumbly because they used floury potatoes, and not crispy. The homemade sauce was tasty, but couldn't save the meal for me. The price of over €20 is by no means reasonable. It's a shame; I've always enjoyed eating at Knurrhahn for years.

I'd describe the service as typically Hanseatic, but the fish was beyond reproach. The food arrived really quickly, and I think the prices are fair.

We were in Bremen for the weekend a few weeks ago. If you can't get enough here, you've got a problem. The portion was generous and very tasty, freshly prepared. The staff was friendly. A long-established snack bar – a perfect place for a good meal during a city trip!

Unfortunately the kitchen was overloaded and as in many restaurants there is a lack of staff. The two ladies in service are simply brilliant at providing service.

Experience from June 2022: Very unfriendly, and apparently no one there has ever heard of "fresh fish." Two points for the beer.

We went to the Knurrhahn fish snack bar and were absolutely thrilled! The fish was truly delicious – fresh, well-seasoned, and perfectly prepared. The portions were generous and the prices were really fair. We'd especially like to highlight the staff: super friendly, welcoming, and simply in a good mood – it's a real pleasure! You can tell they enjoy their work here. We'll definitely be back. Cheers to many more years of Knurrhahn!

Great fish & chips for a great price! Large portion

Quiet, in the heart of Bremen, in a historic building. The service was very good and friendly. The North Sea specialties were OK, but not something special for me, as I'm used to Mediterranean and Aegean fish. However, I did enjoy the homemade hollandaise sauce.

May 2024: We had Bremen fish sandwiches to go. They're very inexpensive and freshly made. While these may be the best in town, unfortunately, I didn't like the taste at all, and I can't recommend them.

Popped in for a slightly late lunch. Plenty of tables both inside and outside were available. Grabbed one inside and we were offered menus in English. Our drinks and food orders were taken quickly and both were served in excellent time. We both chose the fried fish with potato salad. I had the Pollock and my wife the Cod. We both chose the smaller serves which we plenty. The fish was excellent and cooked perfectly. Definitely recommend.

A friendly and brightly decorated restaurant. The service was very friendly, but also a little stressed. Understandable, given that she had to manage the place herself. She was quite friendly to us, though. The menu is overall straightforward, but sufficient for our needs. The food tastes delicious. Kudos to the chef, who also served the attached snack bar. The prices are a bit high, but we were happy to pay for the quality. Overall, a successful evening. We would visit the restaurant again.

The Alster had no carbonation. The plaice was very watery, and the meat was also rather scarce. They weren't very clear about allergens, which is a shame. Allergens must be declared. The tartar sauce was excellent. The appetizer was also good. But I probably won't be coming back. Bottom line: watery, oily, and not well-cooked.

Anyone who likes fish is in the right place here.

Food was good. My panfish was ok. A bit low for the money. Our request to change the side dishes from our dishes was not fulfilled. It's a shame, but typically German.

We were greeted in a Nordic cool manner by the service lady at the Gurnard, not to say unfriendly. The children received a children's menu to color with small dishes. Our southern German palates, with no taste for fish, were thrilled. Food was very tasty and served quickly at the table. The lady then very dismissively dismissed a slight mix-up with the side salad. When we heard at the next table that you couldn't pay with a card, I asked politely and received a rude answer. It just wouldn't be possible and it's at the door. However, there is a notice on the entrance door that you can pay with many cards. Only a food label on the open intermediate door (hardly visible when entering) indicates this. I told the lady this and was hissed at that I should just go to the Commerzbank opposite to withdraw money (€5 fee as a third-party customer). So wander through Bremen and look for an EC machine. Bottom line: Great food, very child-friendly, service underground.

We had lunch here with our daughters, aged 2 and 13, following the recommendation of a city tour. We were greeted very nicely and served very well. Food was super tasty and the portions were very generous. The homemade potato salad in combination with the fried fish is absolutely recommended. We'll be there again on our next trip to Bremen.

We waited about 15 minutes until our turn came. There was another person in front of us. Then it was said that currently there are only 2 rolls left, the others take about 10 minutes. And it didn't smell appetizing in the takeaway area. Been there for the first time and never again.

At the beginning of March 2025 we (my friend, her daughter and I) were in the Gurnard. It was Sunday and we were hungry after visiting the flea market and wanted to treat ourselves to delicious fish for lunch. And we weren't disappointed. Maybe apart from the fact that only downstairs was open - the (more comfortable?) area on the 1st floor was closed. But we still got a nice table by the window without a reservation. And the food was very tasty. Plaice Finkenwerder style was large and delicious and with lots of bacon and potato salad (27.90 EUR). At the daughter's request, fried salmon (28.90 EUR) was served with fried mushrooms instead of spinach (with buttered potatoes and hollandaise) and the fish platter "gurnard" (31.90 EUR) consisted of three types of fish (fried salmon, wolffish and plaice fillet) and a king prawn, fried mushrooms, Hollandaise potato wedges. The portions were really big (you have to be really hungry to handle them) but so tasty that there was nothing left except a few potatoes. Unfortunately there was absolutely no room left for the planned red fruit jelly as a dessert - well, next time... we'll definitely come back. Many thanks also to the nice service. ❤

Ordering took a long time and was quite uncoordinated. However, food was good and inexpensive.

Since I was a child in the 1970s, I have always passed the restaurant on the bus into town. And I always wanted to go in and eat something. Yesterday we went there for the first time and there was nothing going on at lunchtime. Two unfriendly waitresses stood there while my companion went to the toilet and I asked for the menu. They just tell me “it’s on the table.” I wanted to eat something, but was very disappointed with the service, so we left again. So gurnard remains just a childhood memory…. I think it's positive that they allow you to use the toilet - even for non-guests.

In 2023: The fish was very tasty! The chef nice and friendly! There is a star deduction because we think the prices are a bit too high. And we deducted another star for the unfriendly and almost snotty manner of service :( You don't let a bad mood out on the customer! In 2025: Fish dishes super delicious! "Owner" (cook and son-in-law) very nice! Service and everything else was great 😄 Prices in the normal range. We were satisfied and will come back 🍽

Yes, I can, without restrictions! An (almost) pure fish restaurant. Very well prepared food! I had the smelt, very well prepared, a very good portion. I found the cold bean salad a bit of a shame, it could have been warmer, but it was very well prepared and delicious. My companion had the baked cod fish, 3 fillets (which are available in three variations) with plenty of potato salad, it was probably very tasty, in any case there was nothing left over! The staff was very attentive and friendly and also accommodated my somewhat flippant nature. Overall, a worthwhile visit!
