Dicke Wirtin in Berlin

Followed a TripAdvisor recommendation for this on our first day in Berlin. Overall, glad we did. It’s certainly an authentic experience. Picture having a very hearty meal in your old Aunties musty spare room and you’re about there. It isn’t cheap and I can see why some reviews say the service was a little frosty. The guy was fine with us however. In summary, glad we went and saw it. Food was ok but wouldn’t return.

Good Berlin cuisine at Savignyplatz. I have everything from meatballs to pork knuckles. Also a large selection of different beers. Unfortunately, they serve in shifts, so we had to leave the restaurant at 8 p.m.

Authentic and at the same time of course a tourist meeting point. Good food, a nice insight into Berlin gastronomy.

Wow if you visit you must reserve for dinner. We called in at 5pm and the whole place reserved out for next few days, but we managed last 2 seats at the bar only. Great old pub and a key heritage pub in Berlin. Great food and beer and a real treat.

Very cosy atmosphere. More of a pub than restaurant vibe. Small thus loud and very warm. Great service, good food. Somewhat pricy. All in all a good visit. May go again for beer only.

Food and ambiance were stellar! The person serving us didn't really listen to our requests throughout the meal and kept providing us the wrong things which made the experience a little uncomfortable

The rustic, cozy pub has something of an institution. Because we didn't have a reservation, our seat was at the counter. We had a lot of fun listening and watching the service ladies and the experienced barman with their cheeky dialect. Königsberger meatballs tasted like they did back in the day at Aunt Emma's and a normal person couldn't handle the schnitzel portion. Hopefully the innkeepers stay true to their style.

When you enter you are told very clearly and unfriendly that it is a restaurant. You just don't want to drink anything. Order was taken and food arrived 30 minutes later. The schnitzel was practically unseasoned and very dry. The fried potatoes for this were swimming in oil. I used a napkin to create an "oil barrier" on the plate so that the meat didn't get soaked in oil and I could at least eat the schnitzel. The Fat Landlady lives from the recommendations in various travel guides/travel sites. Without tourists the restaurant wouldn't survive. Absolutely no recommendation from me.

Wow! I wanted a real local experience and this than hit the mark. Service and the Snitzel was amazing! Thomas the bartender makes even a tourist feel like a local.

Staff and beers were really good, and nice surroundings too. When we went in we asked the manager for a table and he was visibly annoyed when we only wanted drinks. He did tell us we could only stay for an hour, but was a little rude about it. But the other staff were 10/10

Cozy, old-timey restaurant in the heart of Charlottenburg, serving a variety of classic Berlin / German dishes and drinks. Food servings are generous, and staff is very welcoming.

The food was good, but the fat owner spoiled the joy of visiting the restaurant right from the start with his antisocial behavior.

You like it or not! We found it really cozy! It's not fancy, just quaint. Various pictures and knick-knacks from the flea market. You're sure to always find something new here. Plus music from the 60s/70s with Heintje, Roy Black, Rudi Carell, ... The service was very nice. The portions are huge. The schnitzels barely fit on the plate. There is still some room for improvement in terms of taste. But it's quite an experience. Better reserve a table!

Very tasty food, I had the goulash with dumplings and red cabbage, there are also many different beers and the service is also very friendly. There are also vegetarian dishes here. I would definitely come again.

This restaurant is a must for any local for visitor to Berlin. The schnitzel is the best I’ve ever had - and I grew up in a German-Slovenian household! The beers and deserts were wonderful. This is my happy place restaurant.

Een paar jaar geleden hier ook gegeten. Toen getipt als één van de betere restaurants van Berlijn. Nu was niks minder waar. Door drukte in het openbaar vervoer waren we 2 minuten te laat. We hadden om 18.15 gereserveerd. Bij het noemen van de naam waarop we gereserveerd hadden, wees de eigenaar (man in Hawaï blouse) naar de klok. Het was niet dat het zo druk was, ondanks de tijdsblokken en het dringende advies om te reserveren. We werden met z'n vijven aan een veel te klein tafeltje gezet. De tafel naast ons was ook vrij en veel ruimer. Daarnaast was de bediening ook niet erg professioneel. Ze waren niet allemaal even vriendelijk. We zijn hier vrijwel direct na het eten gegaan. Het eten was verder wel prima. Maar het totaalplaatje maakt voor mij dat ik hier niet snel meer naartoe zal gaan. Er zijn genoeg plekken in Berlijn waar het net iets beter is.

You HAVE to stop by when you are in Berlin! It is quite the gem. The portions are big so arrive hungry.

Fried potatoes were fried with old oil. Not a good price/performance ratio. No decoration, such as a tomato or cucumber slice. No lettuce leaf. Nothing for decoration. Little choice.

DONT GO HERE. The blonde waitress was the rudest person we've ever met travelling. You should no longer work in hospitality if you don't want to be kind. We didn't end up eating or drinking because of how horrible she was to us and to the staff around her. Yelled at us on entry. Threw menus at us, horrible to her female staff member. Don't go here.

Never go here. It was the worst service I have ever had. She was so rude and made us feel uncomfortable. Worst restaurant in Berlin and Europe.

Wouldn’t let one person sit inside at the bar even tho it was practically empty. Wanted to enjoy the experience as a solo traveler. Sorry I was treated that way.

Very rustic atmosphere, good food from Berlin cuisine.

Cozy restaurant on a side street. We spontaneously walked by and tried it out. Service staff is nice. A space was made available for us outside... inside it also looked cozy and therefore well attended. The food was freshly prepared and very tasty. The portion size was also good for the price. Absolute recommendation if you are nearby and like to eat German dishes.

Very quaint and cozy. Delicious food, there was schnitzel and goulash.

Suitable for eating German food. The weather was hot so I ate schnitzel because they said they didn't have Haksen when I went there. The portion was very large, and the only drawback was that the schnitzel had a bit of a porky smell. When ordering schnitzel, jam must be requested separately.

Super! If you're looking for a quaint Berlin pub, this is 100% the right place. Nice, relaxed conversations with the waitress, you feel WELCOME. We'll definitely be back. I can only recommend the apple strudel. THE FIRST I've ever eaten anywhere. THE roulade was also good.

I know the fat landlady from “My Local, Your Local” which was broadcast many years ago. I had visited the fat landlady ages ago and had very fond memories of the roulade I had back then. I'm from Bavaria and asked my colleague who comes from Berlin where you can go for a really hearty, home-style, traditional Berlin meal, which in Berlin would be the equivalent of a rustic tavern with a beer garden. She sent me this address. And I wasn't disappointed. Ambience: A hodgepodge of nostalgic eye-catchers, but clean and well-kept despite all the decoration. The music is amazing, there are only wonderful old hits that take you back to a good time. Eat: There couldn't have been a better place to eat my first ever Königsberger Klopse. A legendary moment. To be honest, I was really amazed by it. I mean, meat dumplings with sauce are an original move, but then add capers on top. It almost rivals roast pork, but don't tell anyone. Value for money: Yes, if you compare with Bavaria, the prices are high, but I neither know the lease or personnel costs in Berlin nor am I familiar with the overall economic situation there. In any case, I noticed that traditional restaurants like this are rare and alone there that's why you should support them.

Berlin snout, but it doesn't suit everyone. Great fries! The rest was ok, but nothing special. You can eat it, but it's too expensive.

Came here with friends who recommended it and safe to say it didn't disappoint. Amazing atmosphere, great local food options and the staff was really friendly. Highly recommend!

We went to eat in this restaurant twice during our vacation in Berlin. The dishes are traditional and relatively inexpensive (the apple strudle was particularly good). Helmut's service on our first visit was impeccable but on our second visit, I found the waitress colder and less pleasant. It still remains a great experience.

It was both a good and bad experience. It was raining when we arrived, and the first staff member who attended to us was rude, ignored us, and asked us to wait outside. We were about to leave because of the poor service, but then a second staff member came, and she was very friendly and nice. The food was good, and the environment was cozy. If the second staff member hadn’t attended to us, I would have given 1 star, but she brought it up to 4.

One of the best pubs / bars in Berlin, I only went for beers, but the food looked good as well.

Historic Berlin brewery. A little dated but with a certain style. We had dinner here and the food was excellent. The beers were also good and the waiter was nice.

We were looking for good classic German food in a rustic atmosphere! And we found it! On top of that, the authentic, direct Berlin waitress put a smile on our faces with every interaction 💫 Although the prices are a bit steep, they are completely reasonable for what you get! The schnitzel was three times the size of my head. I don't think I need to say anything more. Top 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Excellent food. Delicious wild boar sausages that could use a little garnish (sauerkraut, for example) and a second beef roll with vegetables and plums (it melted in your mouth so tender) with an exquisite sauce, accompanied by cooked beetroot and balls of floured and fried mashed potatoes that here they call dumplings. Spectacular decoration and fantastic service.

When visiting Berlin, the fat landlady is a must. The Berlin liver is world class.

The waitress obviously didn't know good service, spoke loudly and quickly... Very direct in her appearance if you asked about something when ordering. Schnitzel and chips were okay, unfortunately they couldn't serve sauce as the cream had run out. No stars from here and no tips from here 😅

In short, the food was delicious, the portion was huge for the price, the service has a nice Berlin charm and the ambience says, this is Berlin 😬

Staff seemed a bit stiff at first, but that changed later. Well-run restaurant in a remote street. Food was haute cuisine, but just as it should be. Generous portions and simply delicious.

Old Berlin pub. It's quite tight inside. The food tastes good, although that is a matter of taste. Prices are good.

It is an old Berlin restaurant that has fortunately retained its charm for many years. There is good German cuisine with decent portions at fair prices. Definitely worth a visit. It doesn't matter whether you sit inside (very cozy) or on "the terrace" in the typical Berlin neighborhood. The staff is nice and friendly. We'll definitely come back.

The local potatoes I ate were too salty, so how could I recommend them.. They were really too salty. The currywurst was cheap, about 10 euros, compared to the neighborhood. When paying, there is a tip option, but if you click on the no tip option, the employee's expression completely changes.

Excellent service and tasty food

We went to the Dicken Wirtin with guests from abroad in the hope of being able to introduce good German cuisine with the right atmosphere. At first it seemed like it would fit. We were taken to our seats and after a short while drinks started. Even then you had the feeling that things could get bumpy. Drinks were mixed up, some forgotten. Instead of soda there was cola, instead of water there was nothing. You should have guessed what would happen as soon as a single drink order had to be confirmed to the waitress several times. At some point the food order followed. Similar problems here - asking multiple times, even if you simply said: “Three schnitzels “Fat Landlady” please”. The children's menu was quickly thrown in again at the end after all the orders had been taken and it was noticed that there were two children sitting at the table whose drink order was taken about 10 minutes ago. The food came after about 20 minutes, which is okay if the order is large. However, only half of the orders came from the kitchen. According to the statement, the other half “did not get through the system” (the blame was placed on the small cell phone/tablet device that the service staff used). So the first part of the group was almost finished before the next part got their food. All that was offered for the delay was a schnapps, which was not well received by the guests before the meal, and then an annoyed comment about her own colleague (she doesn't do that very often, she doesn't have enough experience). About the food itself: The schnitzel tasted sticky and completely unseasoned - we suspect that the schnitzel itself was pre-cooked and only breaded when ordered and then fried in oil, or the oil was extremely old and caused an incredibly unpleasant aftertaste. Unfortunately, one guest became incredibly sick that same evening - this was the only guest who had completely eaten his schnitzel. The other two gave theirs back after two bites. The red cabbage was a slimy mass and had almost no taste. Especially since Berlin red cabbage is traditionally enriched with apple - but there wasn't a piece to be seen. However, this was quickly ignored in the conversation when a waiter talked about the supposed sweetness in the red cabbage. Fried potatoes were also served carelessly and unseasoned. Not even an onion was found to reinforce the taste. Basically, people didn't really deal with the criticism openly, they rather questioned it. There was no further relent, no offer of compensation. And therefore there is no reason to let us turn away from our opinion: The Fat Landlady has focused on tourists as customers. Tourists don't know Berlin cuisine as much as, for example, Berliners - who can clearly say: the menu reads like a typical Berlin menu - but only eats minimally like that! The payment process turned out to be similarly catastrophic after we made three attempts to decide how to pay - whether at the table or at the machine in front - where we then had to say: if it's easier for you (the waitress), then we'll come to the front one at a time. That took another 25 minutes! And you were usually subtly stressed and shouted at by other service employees to please move away. And when the waitress who served asked another if she could change a note, she was just hissed at and said that you couldn't keep making her notes smaller. At the end we were said goodbye with the words: “Unfortunately, you had a problem right from the start.” Conclusion: Menu only partially implemented like Berlin cuisine, service largely overwhelmed, service team unfortunately with almost no team structure or cohesion, more for tourists than one-time visitors. But the inside has the rustic feel you would hope for from a Berlin pub. Unfortunately the staff adds to the atmosphere.

Super nice bar and restaurant with many local guests. Traditional and authentic (as authentic as anything can now be in a big city). Happy and humorous service - lots of visitors, so book a table in good time if you come to eat.

Was very satisfied. Will definitely come back. The service in particular, especially Sabine, was great. Friendly, funny, just likeable. Food also delicious. Keep it up.
