Without a certain tolerance for Roland Kaiser's musical output, a visit to the "Dicke Wirtin" (Fat Landlady) might not be the best idea. But those who possess this tolerance (or are even fans) can spend a very pleasant evening here in an atmosphere best described as "quaint." The food is as hearty as one would expect from a landlady with that epithet; the beer is delicious; and the service is refreshingly straightforward. And those who linger here, drinking and chatting, might even find themselves receiving a few kind words from (presumed) regulars as they leave. What more could one ask for?

Visited here a few weeks ago with my partner while in Berlin. The reviews seemed fairly reasonable, and combined with the history this restaurant has, it seemed like a good place to have dinner (which I very much regret deciding to do). From the get-go, the service was subpar. We were greeted by a very blunt and standoffish middle-aged-looking female server, who I’m pretty sure made some unsavoury comments about me in German to her male colleague directly in front of my partner and me while we were waiting to be seated. The beer was reasonably priced for central Berlin, and the food we had was delicious and cooked very well (we had the cabbage roulade). However, the price of the meals was not justified when comparing what other traditional Berlin eateries charge for similar dishes. It did seem like this place was a bit of a tourist trap, as the other patrons were all non-German speaking whilst we were there, and even on the menu, they try to sell their own restaurant’s merchandise (a bit of a red flag). Lastly, the table service we received from our server left much to be desired. He was friendly, but unfortunately, his overall service quality was very poor. He did not check in with us regularly or ensure our drinks were replenished, which meant I had to grab his attention every time we wanted another drink. This was difficult, as he was dealing with many other tables during our visit. I would have much rather gone to the bar to get served there. This substandard service discouraged us from wanting to stay for more drinks, so we decided to settle our bill. To top it off, our server very cheekily pressured us into providing gratuity, which I definitely should have declined after how unsatisfactory our experience was. There are so many more reasonably priced restaurants around Berlin with much better service quality. I will not be visiting here again and do not recommend anyone waste their time or hard earned money coming here as well.

While staying in my hotel nearby, I put into Google, “Good schnitzel near me.” This place was the first one to pop up, therefore I decided to come here for dinner. I was really impressed by the old school pub style interior. The server was a really cool and funny guy. He knew how to blend good service with a little comedy when interacting with us patrons. The beer choices were good. I loved mine. The schnitzel portion was GIGANTIC and delicious. Man, this place, in West Berlin, really hit the spot. Well done, Dicke Wirtin.

I can highly recommend this restaurant!!!! The food is just like Mom's cooking, and the service is fantastic. Friendly, fast, and very attentive.

The "Fat Landlady" is a legendary establishment in Berlin. It's practically like stepping into another world, a place where you can truly unwind. The staff is incredibly friendly and the food is excellent.

We went there for dinner on a weekday, just the two of us. The staff were very nice and friendly. We ordered schnitzel. The portions were very large; we couldn't eat everything and packed up the rest. Nice German songs were playing in the background. The restaurant was lovely, but it got a bit noisy in the evening due to all the conversation. Otherwise, everything was great! ❤️

We arrived in Berlin around lunchtime and wanted to try some typical German food, so we found this place near our hotel and headed straight there as soon as we settled in. The welcome was a bit confusing, as the area where we were seated was very dimly lit, and when we tried to change tables, they wouldn't let us, making us return to our original table rather abruptly. The man realized this, and when he saw that the table we had initially reserved wasn't arriving, he finally allowed us to move. From then on, everything was perfect. We ordered a starter of fries with egg to whet our appetites and two main courses to share: pork sausage and beef goulash. Everything surprised me, but the goulash and the cabbage that accompanied the dishes were especially delicious. I think we practically threw the plates in the dishwasher. All of this was accompanied by two German beers, as it should be. The quality/price ratio, atmosphere, and service were all very good overall. I'd definitely go back (I wouldn't rule it out). Highly recommended!

Excellent schnitzel and goulash. I had dinner here with my family and we had a great time. The staff was friendly and the food was excellent. The place is a typical German pub. It was an evening we'll remember.

A pub as it should be. Warm, characterful staff behind the bar, a rustic atmosphere, and, as the icing on the cake, solid, good food. A living room for regulars and a safe haven for spontaneous visitors. Highly recommended if you're looking for an honest beer and not a cocktail flavored with fragrant woods under a glass dome.

Excellent food, beautifully presented and served with exceptional friendliness. Our waiter Gerald was fantastic and a perfect fit for the pub. It's a pub because it's a wonderful, traditional place. Sadly, there aren't many like it left. We'll definitely be back. Tip: Reservations are a must!

Just like you imagine Berlin! Pure coziness. Always busy – better to reserve in advance! Groups must provide a credit card when making a reservation, which will be charged a higher amount (displayed during the reservation process) if they don't show up. Probably resulting from bad experiences with group bookings.

Unfortunately, I can confirm the many other negative reviews. Despite having made a reservation weeks in advance, six of us were crammed into a table for four. We were refused a move to a larger, free table next door. After two hours, we were asked to leave, even though there were plenty of other tables available. The food was mediocre at best, and the portions were small for the exorbitant price. The staff were sometimes helpful, but always rushed and hardly any assistance. I've been to the Dicken Wirtin many times over the years, but this will be the last time.

It's quite nice overall. The service takes a little while to get going, but once it starts, it's pretty quick. The food tasted okay, but wasn't anything special. BUT €24 for a pensioner's portion of sliced ​​meat is more outrageous than just cheeky. The atmosphere is charmingly rustic, but somehow cramped. The music... well, let's not go there.

DISAPPOINTING! Since they apparently now cater more to tourists than Berliners, they don't seem to bother trying anymore. The duck breast looked like it came straight from the freezer and was like rubber. The convenience sauce was just as bad 👎🏻. After two hours, we were kicked out because new guests were arriving. We always enjoyed coming here, but that's it for us. If you can get away with this kind of behavior and this level of quality in today's restaurant crisis... 🤔

Before Sunday 18:00 no reservation got in. Like always Eisbein and veal Leber, the Solei is a good entry, Eierlikör as dessert . Service from a unfriendly lady , we didn’t give tip, although she asked for it as we paid with card.

They still exist – the authentic and good Berlin pub and restaurant in the best sense of the word. Excellent sausage quality in the wild boar sausages, the meat sausage, and the brawn. Good bread. Cold beer. The service is typical of the locals, with a good sense of humor and heart. Reservations are important, even during the week. Great beer selection, and the Riesling (0.2l €6) is excellent!

We walk in at 9 p.m., the place is half empty. "Hello, we'd like a drink." The answer is "At 10 p.m." We say, "Uh, what?" "At 10 p.m.! We're a restaurant." Ah, yes, but one with incredibly unfriendly service and a silly business ethic.

Brilliant restaurant with typical German cuisine - our Bratkartoffeln with Spiegelei und Gurke was delicious. Service was very good and our waiter was very funny. We've been there for lunch, but for the evening I would recommend to book a table. Can recommend and would visit again. Loved it! xx

Fabulous experience. Booked table the day before on website and rolled in to the coolest decor and friendliest staff. Schnitzel was ginormous, steak excellent, beer good and strudel to die for. Highly recommend.

A very cozy restaurant with a lovely ambiance and very friendly service – four stars for that. Unfortunately, the food needs to improve. The dishes we ordered were rather mediocre in taste, and the meat was unfortunately quite tough.

Really like the food here, we had beef and pork, both are well cooked and delicious. The beer is nice too. The place is cozy and the waiters are all friendly, they provide good recommendation to us.

The Fat Landlady is a quaint restaurant near Savignyplatz. The ambiance is quite unusual and cozy. Friendly service and delicious food complete the experience. Reservations in the evening are highly recommended, as seating is otherwise difficult. The attached picture was our guess as to what the fat landlady looks like. 🤣 So, a visit is definitely recommended.

After dinner, for the first time in my life, I was speechless. I have truly never experienced such an outrageous reaction from a business owner. We arrived at the restaurant around 4 p.m. without booking a table in advance, hoping to spend a pleasant evening. Unfortunately, after about two hours, it became clear that this plan was not going to work out. After dinner, dessert was ordered. It was probably around 5 p.m. A waiter came shortly afterwards without the cake and told us that we had to pay now and leave immediately because the table was reserved. When we entered the restaurant, no one told us that the table was only available for a certain time. If we had known that beforehand, we would not have gone there to eat. Since we still had drinks and were still waiting for the cake, we obviously didn't leave. Suddenly, the choleric owner, Mr. Karsten Drees, appeared before us without greeting us or showing any appreciation for being his customers, yelling at us to pay immediately and then get out of there. What a sad example for his employees. Incidentally, the tables around us were also free. This suggests that he's looking to make a quick buck. He doesn't care about hospitality—only about his guests' money. There are far better restaurants in Berlin—such as Schnitzelei Charlottenburg, Die Nußbaumerin, Ottenthal Restaurant, and Österelli.

We visited this place yesterday – once and never again! Initially, we were served very nicely, and then suddenly, without warning, we were very demandingly told to pay and vacate the table. There were three free tables available. We still had drinks on the table and had just ordered dessert, but it hadn't been served. So, we weren't even finished eating yet, and to our unpleasant surprise, we asked if we could stay a little longer. This was refused, and then the manager himself came over and yelled at us in the most inappropriate way, telling us to pay now "and then get out of here!" We are shocked by the unrepresentative and truly inappropriate way in which we were treated as guests there. We will not be visiting this place again. Definitely not a recommendation!

The restaurant has a quaint, homely feel, and the food is highly recommended. The staff is friendly, accommodating, and always ready to share a good joke, which we certainly appreciated! We had a first-class dinner there and felt completely at home. We'd love to return on our next trip to Berlin!

My mother was there today with her friends... They were rudely asked to leave because new customers had arrived, even though they had ordered dessert, etc., which then simply wasn't brought. The manager personally asked them, in the most unfriendly manner, to pay and then leave... Absolutely great shop!

The food was passable and the service initially friendly. But then came the shock: We – a small, friendly group of three women – were suddenly asked in the middle of a conversation to leave the table immediately because it was supposedly reserved. No notice upon entry, no advance warning – in fact, all the other tables were empty. One of us even ordered a piece of cake, which never arrived. Instead, we were told to leave immediately because the table was needed. When we objected that we hadn't been informed and that the other guests could sit at one of the many free tables, the manager was summoned. He came over, rudely ordered us to pay immediately and leave the restaurant, and finally shouted at us. We were horrified, stunned, and couldn't believe it. We had never experienced such outrageous treatment. It was clear to us: We will never set foot in this restaurant again.

Very friendly staff and we are coming from the Rhineland to the inline skating marathon in Berlin and have to eat there at least once.

We supposed to celebrate after Berlin Marathon in this authentic and famous German restaurant, very unfortunately it returned with the worse experience for my stay in Berlin. We are a large group of runners and family members having reserved in advance because of the positive comments on the local cuisine, even though a few comments suggested the service wasn't pleasant at all. The lady servant tonight was not helpful from the first second we arrived until the very fast moment. At first, we would like seek her recommendations, but she was kind of rude and ordered us to LOOK at the menu ourselves. It shocked me, and it was the first time we were treated in this way in most of the cities we visited. Her impolitenessand rudeness actually brought Berlin to the lowest. At last, we supposed to finished the dinner with last round of drink, again, she refused. The restaurant itself is very good, great food, the other waiters were great and reasonsble, the worse part is her service. What ashamed.

I had the worst experience with waitress Iris with unfriendly attitude for the whole dining experience. she yelled at us to start with when I asked for recommendations in order to save the dining time so that we can let them have their table back before curfew. then she does not allow us to order drinks after saying the next booking is coming up. we had a tough day running a marathon and trying to enjoy ourselves but it doesn't seem to work that way. I will never get back again and this gave me a very bad impression of berlin because it I think the waitress is very racism! the other staff like coben and John are super friendly!

Four of us arrived to be refused entry to inside the bar. We were informed that they were only seating customers outside. We arrived around 15:00 on a Friday so it wasn't busy. When we went inside to use the toilet it was clear that there was lots of free seats inside but only for locals. Tourist (even if they speak German) are offered only outside seating. Not a friendly experience.

We loved the restaurant and it's service. The staff were attentive and good at what they did. The portion of food was huge 👍🏻 but we felt a little under seasoned. It was the only schnitzel during our trip and it left us wondering what all the fuss was about. However, this is one of the better Berlin restaurants on a budget and I guess we chose the wrong dish on this occasion. Would happily return here

It was one of the worst restaurant experiences I've ever had. We went for chicken schnitzel, but the waiters pressured us to order quickly and acted sarcastic when they saw we were foreigners. We ordered raw chicken; they didn't believe us and we had to show them. They said "sorry" and only gave us the chicken in a bag. When we asked for a bag, they said they didn't have any. When we got home and opened the bag, we discovered it wasn't chicken, but pork! This is completely against both customer satisfaction and respect. Don't go if you don't want to waste your money. Even 1 star is too much.

First of all, the staff was extremely rude. Even though it was half an hour before the meal service ended, they wanted us to choose something in a hurry. We ordered, my chicken was raw, they didn't believe it, they looked at it and said they would bring a new one. Since it was late, I asked for it to be packaged, they brought it directly in a box, I asked for a bag, they said they didn't have any, only chicken was in the box, there were no salad or potatoes. We noticed it on the way. THEY PUT PORK INSTEAD OF CHICKEN, I ATE IT WITHOUT NOTICE AND I AM MUSLIM

I actually wanted to try a new place and just enjoy a beer. The beer was good, but the staff were unfriendly. I felt like a nuisance. It's a shame, because I went there with positive expectations.

Apparently, the staff doesn't feel the need to make their guests feel "warmly welcome." We arrived at 4:30 p.m. and politely asked if we could just have a drink inside. "Reserved" signs were everywhere, even on the bar. Two signs were removed from the bar, warning us that we could only stay until 6 p.m. The beer was well poured—that's why it was awarded one star—but the loud noise from the staff, as if no guests were present, created an atmosphere of "You don't need to be here and are actually superfluous..." There are probably enough regulars, so occasional guests are welcome. Unfortunately, this wasn't a positive impression!
