Coffee shop in the Nikolai Quarter in Berlin

Six adults, all disappointed by the coffee shop. Poor value for money. Cakes and tarts straight from the freezer at an outrageously high price. Coffee and cake are meant to be eaten together. Coffee is usually served with cake. Here, the coffee was served first, and the cake took a while to arrive. There were enough staff, but none of them seemed to be experts.

This was our second time there on our Nikolaiviertel pub crawl, and we can't understand the bad reviews. It's especially questionable when you only give the ambiance a one-star rating. You can almost forget about this guest's review. It's very cozy there, almost like Grandma's living room. Drinks come in matching glasses and coasters. Once a standard feature, today a rarity (extra point for that). The cakes are visibly displayed inside. As a group, we had no complaints about the price or taste.

The service was a complete disaster. Aside from the fact that the waitress neither understood nor spoke German, the food (cake) was brought out so late that we couldn't eat together. Not to mention the wrong drinks. And what we observed at the neighboring tables, apart from ours, really deserves zero stars. The location, however, is really nice, but we won't be coming back.

A quick espresso was pretty average, and especially the exorbitant price: €3.30. What's going on? The service was very unpleasant, the atmosphere average, frankly not very recommendable. What's more, they don't say you can't pay by card for anything under €25. I don't recommend it highly.

This small yet elegant establishment seemed inconspicuous to me, yet deeply influenced by its historic center and its breathtaking past. The staff gave us a warm welcome upon our arrival. A wonderful selection of dishes and prompt service were very impressive. In conclusion, this place, called "Kaffeestube im Nikolaiviertel," exudes a wonderful atmosphere that we would gladly experience again in the future.

A very quiet and quaint restaurant. The ideal atmosphere for a relaxing lunch. Refined, period furnishings. Attentive, unobtrusive service. Varied menu with a wide selection of dishes. Homemade, flavorful cuisine.

In terms of atmosphere, this is a beautiful, historic old Berlin café. It's like grandma's. In one respect, however, it's completely out of date. Card payments start at €25. Even if this is quickly reached due to the pricing here, this limit is completely unacceptable given the profit margin. The cappuccino was much too small for €5.50. One of the smallest cappuccinos I've ever had. And in terms of enjoyment, it was rather low.

Chose the place because it looked cozy. And it was cozy. On the other hand, we had to wait more than half an hour for the food, which did not live up to expectations. My husband had been looking forward to a large Wienerschnitzel. On the plate were two small, deep-fried, thin "patches". The fries were boring. The same goes for my calf's liver. Pink fried was equal to well-fried. The portions were so small that we were not full. However, I was happy with a nice glass of red wine.

I received the wrong dish twice today. I ordered creamed mushrooms and got chanterelles with bacon—okay, it happens, I had it returned. They promised to bring the correct dish straight away. After about 45 minutes and another question from me, I was served the chanterelle mushrooms with bacon instead of the creamed mushrooms. Over an hour wasted. I then went to the kebab shop around the corner.

All the food came at the same time, starters and main dishes, and contained unmentioned pork.

Heavy rain started and the mean old woman made us leave the garden with umbrelas while still consuming drinks

Picked this restaurant because it looked nice and the menu sounded good. Should have checked the reviews before ordering… big mistake! Had the worst schnitzel I’ve ever tasted in my three decades of travel in Germany and Austria. Breading was greasy, and the meat was very tough. I complained to the server, who was very nice and apologetic, but only offered a free dessert as compensation. I expected the chef to come to the table to ask why I hardly touched my meal, but judging from the other reviews here the owners of this restaurant don’t place a high value on customer satisfaction. For the prices charged, customers deserve much better.

Please avoid supporting this place. The Coffee shop seemed really cute and atmospheric, so we stopped for a breakfast around 11 AM. There were not many customers around, so we thought the service would be faster than the other reviews said, but we still had to wait for over an hour for two breakfasts. The coffee came fast, but we finished it long before the breakfast ever arrived. They didn't let us pay for the drinks when we got tired of waiting around the 1,5 hour. Eventually we got our breakfasts, and thanks to the friendly Congolese waitress, we were compensated with new coffees for free. The problems in this establishment seem to be completely on the manager's part, since the waitress was working alone at peak hours. Thankfully the monstrous owner wasn't around this time. With zero ill will towards the employees, especially the wonderful Congolese waitress, I hope this place goes under.

Very cute place, but unfortunately very unfriendly. I ended up not ordering anything. No wonder, I was practically alone there.

Perfect experience at this gorgeous cafe/restaurant. We sat outside on a sunny day. Service was immaculate, coffee was made to perfection, the cheesecake was delicious and the meals were hearty. Highly recommend, will certainly visit again.

Waited 1 hour for our food, they then said they no longer have what we ordered but a replacement would be ready in 2 minutes. Waited another 30 minutes for our food. Not worth it.

We went there to have lunch. There must have been 20 people in total in the restaurant. We waited 15 mins the menus that never came, we borrowed it from the table next to us. The staff was composed of: 1 old man always sighing and grouching against his 2 junior waiters (1 young boy and 1 young girl who sighed as well when the old man asked her to take our orders). We ordered very simple dishes: scrambled eggs and currywurst: 35 minutes to get served. The restaurant could be lovely with a bit of refreshing but seems simply old, like this. The meals were fine though, a pity the service and atmosphere are as poor as this.

I had a soup, I was offered some bread with it, the roll on top was charged at €1.50, pretty outrageous. Such a roll costs 0.19 cents. I think the prices there are overpriced. It's a shame, I won't eat there again.

The only thing this visit brought us was the feeling of being ripped off and treated in the most unfriendly way. Location itself is good, cozy from a distance. That's about it. Ordering was quick and friendly by the ladies who had slight communication problems. But it worked and came pretty quickly. 2 Alster 1 raspberry cheese cream cake slice 1 plum cake 1 currywurst with bread Alster were okay (not much to go wrong) The raspberry piece is also only available from wholesalers at a low price. The currywurst... um well... It was curry sauce with a sprinkle of powder and a sausage that had no heat discoloration... not fried or anything like that... well... hmmm with bread, 2 slices of corn bread and the usual plate decoration of tomato, cucumber, lettuce neatly a piece each. Everything was somehow edible, nothing more, and the currywurst with bread was supposed to have exactly the same price as the version with bread or the version with rolls... recorded on the menu as €12.50. However, this plate didn't have that to offer in terms of value. Not even close! However, the plum cake was absolutely amazing... They brought me these pieces of cake... oh it was warm... um okay... But not from baking, no, from defrosting in the microwave. That was our thought, it would have at least been somewhat similar to cake and that evaporates in dough form. It was a mush, not edible. So I kindly let them go back and asked for a piece of raspberry cake. The wiet/owner didn't like that, he told us loudly with my cake in his hand that it was always like that and it was good, it had to be that way and we always warm it up again in the microwave.... We told him that it wasn't okay, no one could eat it. He left first... right to come back and complain some more and of course give me the cake... He gave me peace and left. We stayed calm, if he gets to the right place with his manner and the way he deals with criticism, then I'm sure it will escalate. This behavior is impossible. However, the nice waitress came and sheepishly apologized in unfortunately bad German and asked whether we still wanted the second piece of raspberry or not. We declined nicely and politely. When the bill came we were quoted an impressive €28.80. And they didn't charge us for the piece of crap. If you don't calculate that, it will be given a positive 1 star... you can't get more than that. Unfortunately a poor performance by the owner/boss... the cake wasn't any better.

Furnished in the old style, lots of wood, cozy and totally pleasantly uncool. Four of us were there in the afternoon, the sun was shining through the windows and we had coffee and cake, a place setting and free combination. The selection of cakes is plentiful, is often replenished in the display case, the coffee specialties and filter coffee are decent (nothing 3rd wave, no galao or frills. The latte, however, is huge, rather expensive and feels like a whole meal in itself.) Well suited for visitors to Berlin.

The Congolese waitress was very nice. We enjoyed the chatting and sharing our cultural differences!

I mentioned at the beginning that I would be sitting in the seats around the corner, but after that I was still forgotten. Furthermore, it was really the driest or toughest schnitzel that I was supposed to eat, but complained about it because I almost choked on it. I received a discount, didn't stay any longer due to the eternal wait and was very disappointed. Because I remembered it differently from before.

This restaurant is just terrible!!! We waited over an hour for our food, the service staff hardly spoke any German, when we tried to speak English we found that they couldn't speak either. The food tasted as if it had simply been warmed up in the microwave. In the end we had to pay 125€ for 2 schnitzels, a veal liver (which wasn't even fully cooked) and 2 omelettes with chanterelles (they were overly salty and gave you a stomach ache) plus drinks. The tablecloths were dirty, as was the coffee cup. The toilet passage was not plastered and the toilet was generally miserable and disgusting. Don't go there, it's the biggest rip-off in the world. The owners should be ashamed of taking money out of people's pockets so shamelessly. All in all, “outside great, inside ugh”.

The food - my friends and I had cakes and coffee - was very good. The owner yelled at his employee several times. Even though there were guests there, he couldn't control himself. When one of us asked him about it, he spoke to us very unfriendly and loudly. I'm never going there again.

There were many options missing from the menu. We finally chose the waitress's recommendation. A duck in confit but dry as it could be. Medium friendly staff but no English speaking. Decadence in a beautiful place.

I had the cabbage rolls. Tasted fine. Service was slow and unorganized. The decor is a bit like Grandma's dining room.

The owner/manager should kindly be asked to retire because he is a danger to the public and his employees. The State should intervene to save future employees and customers from him. He disgracefully humiliated his employee in front of everybody and made her cry. I would not press charges as it is not illegal to be an idiot.

The boss humiliates his employee in front of all the customers over a cash register problem. He reprimands her at length without worrying about her indecency. I don't leave a tip because of his shocking behavior. He has absolutely nothing to do with it.

Fine German cuisine, which still exists. A juicy goose, tender red cabbage and a dream of freshly made potato dumplings, soft and airy. Recommended.

Service was very friendly. Food was bad. We had to wait 75 minutes for the food. The cutting was still raw on the inside. That got a lot of laughs from the staff. The mushrooms were just like snot. When we were there, people from other tables were getting up to leave... they had already been waiting for their food for 1.5 hours.

They do not speak English, it is impossible to be understood by the waitress who takes the order. 5 of us went to eat. Bad attention from this waitress. Since there was some misunderstanding when ordering the dishes, the girl had no patience and since she didn't understand us in English, she gave you looks of unwillingness and displeasure. He didn't offer us desserts or coffees, he directly brought us the bill (he wanted us to leave). If you don't speak German, it's better not to go. The food is nothing to write home about either. A currywurst with frozen fries = €12.50. A bratwurst with boiled potatoes and parsley (the bratwurst was not good and half was left on the plate) = €12.50. 2 Schnitzel (breaded fillet) with mushrooms well. Breast fillet with mushrooms (very overcooked on the grill and drier than mojama). Total of the 5 dishes and the drink €134.80

Excellent quaint restaurant in beautiful Berlin

We were looking for a restaurant for dinner and passed the coffee shop. It looked very comfortable from the outside - unfortunately it was just functional inside. For a coffee shop there was a large selection of hot food, so we stayed. The service was very attentive, but unfortunately not professional. We were more than disappointed with the food. No recommendation!

1€ for charging my phone which I only found on the bill later. Absolutely pathetic. Charging a phone is approx 1 cent and I’ve you’re so desperate as an owner, at least mention it beforehand.

They charge 1€ when you use their plug to charge your phone. If they do that, you can suspect what's going on in the rest of the establishment and the kitchen.

Two espressos and two glasses of water 14 euros. In Portofino in the square I pay a tenth of what I paid here. Not recommended. A theft

We wanted to go out for dinner in the Nikolaiviertel away from the tourists in the evening and came across this cozy restaurant. Atmosphere chic inside, but sat outside. The service was very nice and quick. The food is good Berlin cuisine with a good selection. Gladly again ;-)

A wonderful little restaurant with very friendly staff. I was there for breakfast and I have never had it so beautiful and tasty in Berlin. The coffee was really good too. My wishes were met perfectly (vegetarian). I will definitely go there again.

Tourist trap. Everything bought cheap discount goods. Waited a long time. There was little to nothing going on. Waited 45 minutes for a simple breakfast. Prosecco tasted good, as it had been open for two days. But thanks for the comparison value. Now I appreciate a good breakfast more again.

We just drank a coffee and ate a small dessert. Overall, it was pretty disappointing. (The coffee was watery. The ice cream was purchased, which in principle is nothing objectionable, but you should pay attention to good quality, because that wasn't the case here.) We had to wait a long time until we were served and paid. But the "highlight" was the manager, who told us, the guests (!), to keep our mouths shut when there was a complaint about the coffee. He did this to us not just once, but twice! And that's probably not possible at all! The restaurant itself is very old. The intermediate doors between the toilet and the sink are completely missing. (As an example, a photo of the women's toilet)

The boss of the coffee shop was rude and insulted and spoken to briskly. Iced coffee was drinkable and ice cream was nothing special. Ambience was fine. Not recommended!!

Menus on the table, menus on the wall but no food service and no sign saying there was no food. Waited for the waiter for ten mins and was grumpily told the news. Fortunately there’s plenty of other good places nearby.

Positive: quiet place with lots of peace and quiet, drinks and food arrived in a reasonable time. Vegan options on the menu. Negative: There was no longer one page of chanterelle dishes on the menu, but that was only said when we ordered that one. Service 1 was nice and tried hard, but hardly spoke any German/English. Waiter 2 was a grumpy man. Food came in a reasonable time. The salad with turkey strips for €14.50 was a side salad (even on the same plate) with 3-4 leaves of lettuce, a tomato, some cucumber and peppers and with fried (ready-made?) strips + dressing from the bottle. Cordon Bleu was okay but nothing more, apple fritters were extremely sweet but very tasty. Unfortunately overall it's rather outrageous for the price.

A nice little oasis in the middle of the big city. The daily special (cheesecake with a large cup of coffee) came at the right time and was delicious. The large plane trees in front of the house provide sufficient shade for the outdoor spaces.

Away from the hustle and bustle, this restaurant is located in a cozy district. Interior small and furnished in the old style. Outside in the cool shade of the trees. The staff was nice and the food was excellent. Good home cooking.

We strolled by by chance looking for breakfast. We each had a fitness breakfast. It was very good, lots of fresh fruit, muesli, croissants, rolls and much more. The service was great. Special requests (oat milk instead of cow's milk) were no problem at all. The ambience was great. We sat outside, directly opposite the Nikolai Church. For the breakfast provided, the price was perfectly fine. A completely vegan breakfast is missing from the menu, but you can also put together the breakfast from individual “parts”. Then the vegan breakfast is also possible. We had breakfast there again during our Berlin vacation. Absolute recommendation! We're already looking forward to next year!

Very tasty and large breakfast in beautiful surroundings. By chance we passed the coffee shop looking for breakfast and stayed there because of the large selection and our expectations were exceeded. Both the fitness breakfast and the super breakfast deserve their name. Lots of fresh fruit, croissants, egg dishes etc. Coffee and cappuccino were hot and good. The menu in general is home-style cooking but with many vegan alternatives. Because of our first positive experience, we went back for breakfast today.

I found the restaurant quaint, slightly old-fashioned but with charm. The coffee and cake were good and tasty, in my opinion, for the size, but too expensive. But given the situation: he can take it 🤷🏼‍♀️ The service (young woman) was nice, quick and neat, but the boss should reconsider his clothing. If the pants slip and are therefore held in place with suspenders, they are of no use if he has to bend down deeply. Woman looks into the finest 'masonry décolleté' - I don't need that at all.

We went there when they were closing but they were so kind to offer us coffee to go and have chatted with us about Berlin. Apple tart was also delicious. Many thanks🙏🏻🫶🏻

Very typical German food, excellence ambiance and lovely staff.

I stumbled upon the place while walking through the city. For context, I do not speak German but I've worked in hospitality for over a decade. They are understaffed and the one server was clearly overwhelmed and newer. I had just ordered a glass of white wine and a bratwurst. When it came to the bill, they were basically arguing with me about payment and items. This only occurred because the other server who wasn't serving me was helping close the bill. In the end I paid cash, they have something on their menu about how they only take German credit card. No problem with that, I did read that before I sat down and ordered. I get people get frustrated and overwhelmed but I had actually just wanted another drink (just a glass) not my bill. And again the original server placed the wrong thing on my bill and then tried to charge me for it. I know I saw a male manager walking around to the other groups. Please help and train your team better.

I had to wait for the train and wanted to have some breakfast beforehand. Was the only guest late in the morning. The service wasn't particularly attentive. The waiter didn't seem to have the slightest desire to be bothered by me. The breakfast was really bad, although there were different dishes, but the rolls were old, the egg was dusty and the cappuccino was one of the worst I've ever drunk. Above all, the mood drove me to flee. Everything still looks like it did in the GDR era, but it's not nostalgic at all. More like the oppressive feeling you know from that time. Now of course that was because I was sitting there alone, but the lack of music and the waiter's lack of interest made that even worse. In short: I didn't feel welcome but rather dismissed, even though no one was definitely under stress. Another minus point: card payments are only possible from 25 euros.

I cannot agree with the previous negative reviews. We were treated with respect and the food was good. The staff was friendly and attentive and we were able to pay by card.

Imagine Marvin from Hitchhikers Guide in human form. That's the waiter. Even tipping after every beer order didn't lighten his mood. "Here I am. Brain the size of a planet. Waiting tables." The beer is fine, though. We sat outside and ordered the Bratwurst. It was a success. Good sauerkraut, good potato, good sausage. All for less than 10 euro. Turned a lot of potential customers away while we were sat there, probably due to their no credit card policy. Waiter was happier serving food than he was beer. Maybe it's a Sunday thing. He'd warmed up a lot by the time the food was eaten. Maybe turning away so many customers gets disheartening. fg

A BIG NO!!!!! Wenn ich eine -10⭐️ geben könnte, würde ich es geben. Sehr sehr sehr unfreundliches Personal. Wir saßen draußen für etwa 20 min, und niemand kam vorbei... Ich war drinnen, um zu fragen, ob sie rauskommen und uns bedienen würden, er antwortete nach dem zweiten Mal gefragt, und sagte "JA HA." Unfreundlich. Wir saßen weiter und warteten und ratet mal was? Es kam nie jemand vorbei. Außerdem ist die Speisekarte schlecht, hässlich und fliegt auf die Straße. A BIG BIG NO.

Schade das es kein -5 gibt. Wir waren in dieser Kaffeestube. Ich habe Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte gegessen. Die war mindestens 3 Tage alt. Sahne war am Rand ranzig und die Tuffs wurden einfach durch Sprühsahne ersetzt. Aber vorallem nicht selbstgemacht!!! Gabel wurde an der Seite zum stützen reingesteckt sonst wäre das Stück gleich umgefallen. Ach doch noch etwas positives. Der Cappuccino war gut. Ansonsten Finger weg von diesem Kaffeehaus bzw von den Kuchen. Ihre "freundliche" Bedienung hat gesagt das die hausgemacht sei. Und nein wir waren nicht am 8. Oktober da. Aber das tut auch nix zur Sache. Torte wurde reklamiert. Aber ohne Erfolg. Ging zurück und wurde nicht verzehrt. Nur so am Rande. 🤬😈

Wir besuchten im September 2023 dieses Lokal ohne auf die Bewertungen zu schauen, weil es anfing zu regnen. Beim Betreten bekamen wir sofort in wirschem Ton gesagt, dass nur Getränke sowie Kaffee und Kuchen bestellt werden könnten. Das gesamte Personal verbreitete eine kaum zu beschreibende sehr negative und bedrückende Stimmung. Mir hätte es schon eine Warnung sein müssen, dass Kuchen auf der Karte stand aber nirgends Kuchen in einer Kühlvitrine zu sehen war. Ich entschied mich für ein Stück Kürbis - Walnuß - Kuchen. Der Chef des Hauses empfahl mir in mürrischem Ton noch Sahne dazu, was ich aber ablehnte. Nach etwa 5 bis 10 Minuten (bei leerem Lokal) wurde mir eine Tasse Kaffee mit dem Kuchen serviert. Der Kuchen war in einem Zustand, dass man ihn keinem Kunden mehr vorsetzen konnte. Er war staubtrocken, beim Einstechen mit der Gabel zerbröselte er total, sodass er mit der Kuchengabel nicht mehr zu essen war. Meine Tochter machte mich auf Schimmelkulturen am Rand des Kuchens aufmerksam. Ich brachte den Kuchen sofort zum Chef und sagte, dass dieser Kuchen überaltert und vertrocknet ist und am Rand bereits Schimmel angesetzt hat. Auf den Schimmel ging er gar nicht ein und sagte nur, dass man dazu ja Sahne essen solle. Als ich nach weiteren 5 Minuten die Rechnung verlangte stand der Kuchen ebenfalls auf der Rechnung. Ich weigerte mich zunächst die Rechnung zu bezahlen. Der Wirt bestand auf Bezahlung. Ich hätte den Kuchen bestellt und sein Koch hätte ihm soeben bestätigt, dass der Kuchen frisch gebacken wurde und in einwandfreiem Zustand gewesen wäre. Ich könne den Kuchen gerne mitnehmen. Weil wir uns wenig später mit jemandem treffen wollten und uns aus zeitlichen Gründen auf keine weitere Diskussion einlassen wollten habe ich den Kuchen bezahlt. Der Kuchen war unabhängig von der Qualität für das sehr schmale Stück mit 5,10 EUR absolut zu teuer. Für uns steht fest, dass wir diese "Kaffeestube" nie mehr betreten werden. Ich persönlich habe noch nie so schlechte Erfahrungen gemacht wie in diesem Lokal. Hier stimmen weder die Qualität noch der Preis und schon gar die Freundlichkeit des gesamten!! Personals. Mein Rat, Finger weg, es gibt in der Nähe bestimmt ein besseres Café.

Ich habe einen „veganen, bunten Salatteller“ bestellt, Preis 9,90 Euro. Die Menge war die, die normalerweise als kleiner Beilagensalat serviert wird. Bunte Vielfalt: nicht vorhanden, Tomaten, grüner Salat. Dressing: einfach miesen Balsamico Essig drüber gekippt, kein Öl, kein Salz, kein Pfeffer. Brot dazu? Fehlanzeige. Hut ab, das muss man sich erstmal trauen, zu servieren! Der schlechteste Salat, den ich jemals bekommen habe. Mein Mann hatte Zwiebelkuchen, war wohl auch überhaupt nicht gut. Bedient wurden wir zuerst von einem völlig uninteressierten, unfreundlichen Kellner (so bekam ich auch erstmal den falschen Salat), später von einer freundlichen Frau.

Außen „Hui“ innen „Pfui“! So ansehnlich und nett das äußere Erscheinungsbild des Kaffeehauses auch aussieht, … - der Service unterirdisch - die Preise für die Qualität des Essens eine Frechheit - absolut unhygienisches und extrem beleibtes Personal - Kartenzahlung ab 25€ Sehr unfreundlich wurden wir bedient. Wir waren die ersten an dem Vormittag und wollten frühstücken. Es erschien uns so als würden wir stören und die Hoheiten von ihrer Siesta abhalten. Das Personal war nicht in der Lage sich nur eine Bestellung mal vollständig zu merken oder zu notieren. Mehrfach fragten wir nach. Liesen falsch gebrachte Getränke zurück geben. Extrabestellungen die wir aufgaben wurden erst garnicht berücksichtigt. Man reagierte genervt auf unsere Hinweise. Das Essen selbst unterirdisch. Lieblos angerichtet . Nicht wirklich frisch. Die Preise eine bodenlose Frechheit. 5,50€ für einen kleinen (echt mies schmeckenden) Cappuccino, 4€ für Scheiblettenkäse (Schmelzkäse) und Kartenzahlung wurde uns verweigert außer man habe eine Rechnung über 25€. Nie wieder! Bitte liebe Touristen meidet diesen Laden. Wir als Berliner können euch versichern ein paar km Richtung Prenzlauer Berg oder auch in der näheren Umgebung am Alexanderplatz gibt es qualitativ Hochwertigeres für den Gaumen.

Super Essen, tolle Atmosphäre, supernettes Personal, immer wieder

Hier spürt man das man im Herzen Berlins ist. Das Nikolaiviertel ist die Wiege Berlins und das erlebt man in der Kaffeestube noch original. Ich tank Kaffee Wiener Art und aß eine Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte, es war sehr lecker und die Torten sind selbst gemacht. Zu empfehlen ist auf jeden Fall der Apfelstrudel, dieser wird warm serviert und mit warmer Vanillesauce - saulecker. Wer das originale Berlin sehen und erleben will ist hier richtig, urig aber dennoch moderne Technik, man fühlt sich wie in einem Wiener Kaffeehaus. Nächstes mal gerne wieder.
