Café de Bretagne in Düsseldorf

I had high expectations but was utterly disappointed. With this reputation and these prices, they expect more. The appetizer (razor clams) was okay, but nothing special. It was also annoying that the razor clams were very sandy. The turbot in the main course was excellent, fish-wise. The side dishes were oversalted, cold, and lacked any real flavor; the leek straws were limp, and the basil foam was just a cold, flat puddle. It's a good thing it was a business lunch. I wouldn't go back for a private meal. My companions were also only moderately impressed.

We ate there yesterday with four people. The reason was my wife's birthday. Regarding the ambiance, it was quite cramped, and loud enough to make conversation difficult. I had the organic mussels; I thought mussels were always organic. They were very small, and it was difficult to eat them individually. The taste was unimaginative and sour. Another dish included clams, which were 95% closed, so they were inedible. Despite our complaint, the full amount was added to the bill. The crème brûlée was also not recommended. It was hopelessly oversweetened. So, all in all, not a pleasant evening. I would not recommend this restaurant.

Unfortunately, it's no longer comparable to previous years. The service is rushed, almost frantic. The quality of the food and wine leaves much to be desired. We used to enjoy going there, but we won't be returning. Has there been a change of ownership? For example, four thin slices of baguette for €4.50 – absolutely outrageous, never again!

NEVER VISIT THIS PLACE. This is not a seafood restaurant. It’s literally a HOLE where you fear for your health after eating. I’ve never eaten lobster in my life and came to Düsseldorf specifically for that. The lobster cost 100 euros and 60 euros. I was with my relatives. When they brought me the lobster I ordered, I first thought it was a joke. I’ll attach photos of what it looked like. We ordered oysters and two lobsters—one big, one smaller. Now, let me tell you the problem. Upon entering the restaurant, you’re immediately greeted by a huge freezer where they store the seafood, but the catch is that this freezer either doesn’t work or works so weakly that you don’t feel any cold at all, even when touching the lid. Moving on. The oysters we ordered—they’re in the photos. They weren’t alive. They didn’t react to anything—neither lemon juice nor touch. We returned half the order, fearing for our health, as seafood poisoning is one of the most dangerous. Next, about the lobsters. And here’s where it gets interesting. What you see in the photos is exactly what they brought us. If it’s not clear: they cook the product, put it on display, and wait for someone to buy it. What’s on the plate in the photo is a lobster that was cooked who-knows-when, cold and dry. It wasn’t prepared an hour before we arrived or in our presence. I think it was cooked 2 or 3 days ago. The one in the photo is a large lobster. I didn't take a picture of the second one. The sauce was a mix of mayonnaise and ketchup. To say it was bad doesn’t even begin to cover it. I literally feared for my health. In one of the photos, you’ll see a crab that was already cooked. That’s a ready product, prepared who-knows-when. NEVER, under any circumstances, go there. It’s dangerous for your health.NEVER The price of two losbets was about 150 Euros

We didn't feel welcome, more like we were 'fed up.' The mussel sauce tasted bitter and inedible. It was replaced, but there was neither an explanation for the bad taste nor an apology. The Sauvignon didn't taste typical. The service staff were unfriendly and constantly in a hurry.

A little bit of France brought to western Germany. 10/10, really delicious. Recommendation: fries with mussels.

I ate there last Saturday. If you like French seafood, this is the place to be. Fresh mussels and shellfish, and a well-chosen wine. The area is worth seeing anyway. A good destination for a pleasant day trip. My only minor criticism: the service was a bit rushed. But it was also busy. We were there at 5:00 PM. After that, it gets crowded.

Highly recommended We were there on a Wednesday and had a time slot until 8:00 PM. The restaurant wasn't fully booked, and we were able to linger there until we left around 9:00 PM. The food was fresh, a great combination of flavors, and the portions were generous. Excellent value for money!

This was the worst experience in easily 10 years. "Mackerel with salad (special of the week)" for €15 is actually a small bowl of cold, watery soup. Swimming in it are three mini pieces of fish and a few pieces of vegetables. At first, I thought it was a free starter. I called the waiter. No, that's actually the dish I ordered. The waiter then almost points his fingers into the soup to show the fish 😬 The fact that he was initially reluctant to wipe the table of bird droppings and even commented on it is extremely unprofessional. Needless to say, I was still hungry afterward. Stay away from Café de Bretagne!!

Unfortunately, you're only allowed to sit there if you order a proper meal...two coffees and two crêpes aren't enough...as a tourist, that's a real shame.

Unfortunately, I can only give the overall result one star. Food: We had oysters, shellfish ravioli, scallop tartar, mules fries, and linguine with mussels. Everything tasted good. The sauce for the ravioli was particularly great. The broth for the moules fries was also good. The mussels could have been bigger. Unfortunately, they were small and had little meat. Now, here's why the rating is so poor. My companion got mussels in her linguine, which were definitely not good anymore. She noticed it while eating it, but hoped she was wrong. Two to three hours after the visit, she felt incredibly ill and vomited several times. Unfortunately, the evening was over. Service: The service was attentive, but not particularly friendly. A wrong bottle of wine was taken away at the table, but not pleasantly. Atmosphere: Very down-to-earth. You couldn't call it particularly cozy. But considering the prices, it was okay. Value for money: Except for the incident, the food was okay. The wine list was a bit overpriced. Service could be better, which would improve the ratio.

Great place with great service! The oysters are fresh, the mussels in creamy sauce are simply delicious. Large selection of fish. Excellent wine list. Everything is top notch, I will definitely come back!

A wonderful place with a unique oyster tavern atmosphere. If you are looking for a French-oyster vibe - this is definitely the place for you. Just don't forget to book a table in advance - the place is very popular. Our whole family is delighted with you guys and can't wait for our next meeting!

Best French seafood restaurant in Düsseldorf. Plenty of Breton choices (and a very small store next door to buy food items from Bretagne). The best place in n town to go for oysters. Premium pricing but well worth the culinary experience.

We are (or were) regulars, and this is normally a great place, but today we waited over an hour for our main course, which still hadn't arrived. All the shops were already closed by then, of course. The service was friendly, but the kitchen seemed completely overwhelmed. This was our last time there, and we would strongly advise anyone looking for a quick bite to avoid a visit.

Offering a bouillabaisse where rouille and bread are only available as extras for a fee is symbolic of Düsseldorf's demise. For those moving from the region, it'll probably suffice.

I ate at this restaurant with a friend yesterday. After initially being given free choice of seats, we were then moved from the coveted window seat to another table. The waitress mumbled so quietly that I couldn't understand her. The food: a fish soup that was abysmal, with only one kind of fish, either from a can or completely dried out, unidentifiable, and oversalted. The soup tasted like instant food. They don't even offer bread. You had to order that separately. It was carelessly sliced ​​and without any dip or butter or anything. The bill said fish soup with "croutons," but unfortunately I didn't get any. The dessert was good, but overall a flop for a lot of money. Never again!

We drove to Düsseldorf on Tuesday (closed on Mondays) especially for Breton food. The rillettes were sold out, the mussels were sold out... It used to be good. We won't go there again for that experience. The stupid comment that 80 kg of mussels would be delivered the next day is beyond inaccurate.

My girlfriend and I went to the Café de Bretagne today. The service was excellent, and we were warmly welcomed. The location is very pretty, and it's even more beautiful when the weather is great. The young waiter with the cap is very good at recommending dishes and drinks. He definitely knows what he's talking about. Plus, it's not far from the beautiful Rhine. We'd love to come back :)

We always enjoy eating here. We've always appreciated the food, the quality, and the friendliness of the staff. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case today. We know that the stay is limited to two hours, and that's generally fine with that. But today's urgency and unfriendliness really surprised us. Even when we were ordering, the waiter's manner put us off rather than welcomed us. When the two hours were up, we were almost rushed out of the restaurant – we were insistently told to pay and leave. Even the fact that we wanted to pay separately was met with visible displeasure. I understand that the table was already booked. But a brief reminder that we could have had another bottle of wine outside at the bar would have been the least we could have done. Unfortunately, only three stars today because of one person. The food was – as always – excellent!

We went there for the first time yesterday. When we walked in, it smelled like vacation; I actually felt at home right away. The young, dark-haired waitress, who immediately came over and asked what we'd like to drink, was very friendly. The older, blonde waitress, on the other hand, was unfortunately only moderately friendly. (We had planned from the beginning to only have a sweet snack, as we were planning to have a proper lunch at home with my son.) When we ordered "only" a crêpe, we were treated very condescendingly by her. When I then asked for a specialty from Brittany that wasn't on the menu, she became even more arrogant. What a shame! My Breton friends were embarrassed when I told them about it on the phone. With so much arrogance, I would have expected that a Breton café would serve, in addition to the seafood for which it is known, THE sweet specialty of Brittany...the Far Breton. When I asked about it, she dismissed it with the statement "you can't just jump on any horse," again with a fair amount of arrogance! I guess the lady hasn't been to Brittany that often herself! Otherwise, she would surely know the Far Breton! But then, to be so arrogant... What a shame!

Detestable staff. They treated us very badly. A blonde waiter went out of his way to make us feel unwelcome despite having made a reservation and the fact that the place was practically empty, he even scolded us when we asked why we had been waiting for 10 minutes in a restaurant with no customers. Then we were attended to by the manager or the owner who was also very unpleasant and despite having asked her specific questions about her wines and oysters, she treated us as if we were people who did not understand gastronomy. The only person who was friendly, empathetic and professional was a young, black-haired waitress (Aina?) who is the only one who deserves the star we have given for the service. We will never return. There is nothing worse than arrogant staff who think they are better than you and therefore treat you badly but charge you exorbitant prices for a fairly mediocre genre.

Delicious pastries and delicious tarts, self-service

Overall it was just an OK place. The food was fine. I think a bit of personal touch was missing in the service. If you want try some oysters in a nice atmosphere with some French wine you can try that. Prices are a bit on higher side, which does not justify the overall experience.

Very friendly and competent staff. Small aperitifs after which you are not already drunk (0.2 Riccard, €5,-) an excellent selection of oysters, an exceptionally good selection of wines, a very good main course and dessert.....a little holiday in France....all at a good price/performance ratio.....I am looking forward to my next visit to the Café de Bretagne! Basically the food was good, however some recommendations. Please clean the snails more detailed, it’s not nice to have sand during every bite. And for large Shrimp, consider removing the intestine, especially if full.

As a person with irritable bowel syndrome, I went to the café to ask if I could use the toilet. I was denied this by saying that the boss was there. I said that it was really urgent and I would be happy to pay for it. Despite this I was not allowed to use the toilet and instead was sent to a public toilet which turned out to be closed. Luckily, another restaurant in the area took pity. Anyone can imagine what would have happened otherwise. Right in the middle of the old town! I think it's so inhumane to deny paying people access to the toilet! Anyone who shows themselves to be so inhumane will never see me as a paying customer in their restaurant again!

The establishment is a little more expensive, but you can buy separately unopened oysters from the menu for almost half the price There are also many other seafood for every taste and color. This is my favorite seafood restaurant and whenever we are in Düsseldorf we enjoy the wonderful selection of oysters and the delicious preparations of various Breton fish dishes. The galettes are also great. It's an experience to eat there. For me it cannot be compared to any other fish restaurant. Thanks for the lovely evening yesterday!

Great sardines as a starter and Linguine Frutti di Mare as a main course. The linguine came with a great bisque. It's been a long time since I've had such good fish!

A dream...my wife and I were there for the first time on February 1st, 2025 to taste oysters. Since it was completely full inside (although the decor was very nice, at least from what we could see in such a short time), we sat down outside after the waitress confirmed that we could do that if we wanted and didn't have to wait for a seat inside. Since we are not that sensitive to cold and it was relatively warm, we placed the order, which took a little longer but was absolutely forgivable and within limits due to the number of visitors. Especially since my wife and I are one of the few people who can actually have a conversation without staring at our cell phones every minute or messing around on social media. It was also very exciting to see how few drivers were familiar with the road traffic regulations at the zebra crossing, but well, that's a different topic. The oysters were served as to be expected and were an absolute pleasure. I made it clear that this would have been my first time. The waitress/employee then told us a great trick when it came to eating oysters and so after enjoying the oysters and the crémant we left a generous tip and moved on happy and satisfied. If we make it to Düsseldorf again, we will definitely stop by again. A big thank you to the staff and a huge compliment to the small but fine menu and offerings. The price is logically a little higher but I would like to say it is very fair, very honest and deserved. Absolutely recommended! Best regards Patrick Stößel

Kurz und knapp: Gemütliches, lockeres Ambiente. Gemischtes Publikum. Gerade so eben ausreichender Service. Faire Preise. Etwas lieblose Speisen, wenig akkurat zubereitet. Entspricht einem schwachen Touri-Restaurant in Frankreich.

I had the lobster as my main course, but unfortunately the side dish (mashed potatoes) was cold. My father's risotto was also not served warm enough. When I asked to order a portion of fries as an additional side, I was informed that this was not possible as fries were not provided for the lobster dish. For a restaurant in this price range I would have expected a higher standard, both in terms of food quality, flexibility and service. Overall the visit was disappointing and unfortunately I cannot recommend the restaurant.

Unfortunately the experience was disappointing. The lobster was overcooked and tasted mediocre. The service was not particularly attentive or warm. We had hoped for more for the prices.

I actually liked the restaurant, but I think there is potential for improvement. Some dishes are pretty good (usually quite small, but for french cuisine that is often the case) and some dishes are just not it. Additionally I find the restaurant quite pricey for their services. I understand that düsseldorf isn’t directly at the sea, so I am not going to be too harsh, but for that money one can find a bit better food. But I wouldn’t say it is a bad restaurant. I can actually very much recommend the Moules. They were very tasty and not so expensive.

We went there 5 times. The fifth will be the last even if we were satisfied with the value for money. We took marinières mussels, it is indecent to offer such a product. The mussels were tiny. No self-respecting restaurant serves such a dish. Obviously the price is more than 20 euros.

Atmospheric place. There is a lot of activity here. Food for every taste: different types of fish, crabs, oysters, wine and desserts. And in the end, the main advantage is that it is quite noisy here and you feel like you are alive and cheerful, and not like you have come to the restaurant at a funeral. If you want to eat delicious food and don't have to worry about anything, this is the right place for you. And yes, the waiters here are very nice, one of them looks a bit like Elton John. It's funny and definitely puts you in a good mood and makes a good impression. I won't say a word about prices, everyone knows that life is fundamentally an expensive pleasure. Therefore, live your life with joy and pleasure. And come to this cafe for dinner!

Nach unserem heutigen Besuch im Café de Bretagne (nicht unserem ersten …) las ich mir auf Tripadvisor die Bewertungen der letzten Monate durch. Sehr interessant! Die letzte richtig gute Bewertung gab es vor ÜBER EINEM JAHR. Entweder der Service wurde bemängelt oder die Qualität der Produkte. Nun zu unserer heutigen Erfahrung: Wir betraten am 24.11. mittags das Lokal (zugegebenermaßen ein paar Minuten zu spät. Die Parkplatzsuche…..) und wurden sofort – ohne irgendeine freundliche Begrüßung – einer harschen Zurechtweisung unterzogen. Die kleine Verspätung wurde – obwohl das Lokal kaum gefüllt war – in den Mittelpunkt gestellt. Kaum waren wir am Tisch und standen noch und zogen uns gerade die Mäntel aus, wurde uns die Frage nach einem Aperitif gestellt. Höflichkeit = Null. Kaum zwei Minuten später wollte man uns direkt eine große Flasche Wasser verkaufen. Wir waren sprachlos. Ein Restaurant ist immer Gastgeber und sollte entsprechende Qualitäten haben. Wir wollten den Geburtstag unserer Freundin feiern und waren fest entschlossen, dieses Event zu genießen. Wir bestellten 3 Gläser Crémant. Sehr köstlich! Danach bestellten wir unser Essen: Austern als Vorspeise für die Eine, Rillette für die Andere. Rillette kam im Glas, völlig schmucklos auf einem Tellerchen mit ein paar Scheiben Brot. Aha. Schmeckte aber gut. Der Hauptgang wurde serviert: Fischsuppe, Muscheln. Muscheln wirklich winzig, aber trotzdem geschmacklich wirklich, wirklich lecker. Der Sud war köstlich. Die Fischsuppe auch sehr lecker!! Brot kaum vorhanden, wurde auf Nachbestellung noch einmal geliefert. Nicht einmal kam die Frage: brauchen Sie noch etwas? Salz musste erfragt werden… Echt jetzt??? Warum???? Die Aufmerksamkeit der Kellner musste hart erarbeitet werden, während man sich lieber dem leckeren Essen gewidmet hätte. Ist es nicht üblich, VOR dem Hauptgang zu fragen, ob man gerne noch ein Getränk hätte? Insgesamt eine Erfahrung, die wir nicht wieder machen möchten. Noch ein herzlicher Gruß an Betty, die meine Reservierung entgegennahm und uns den Wunschtisch ermöglichte. Danke!! Ich wäre Ihnen heute wirklich gerne begegnet, dann wäre unser Aufenthalt garantiert eine volle Punktzahl gewesen.

If you're looking for a casual spot to enjoy a glass of wine with some oysters, this place might work for you. The atmosphere is pleasant, but unfortunately, the food doesn’t live up to its price. The menu lacks variety, with most dishes centered around potatoes, which feels quite removed from authentic French cuisine. The fish was underseasoned and lacked flavor. Overall, it’s not the best choice if you’re searching for a true French dining experience.

At the beginning of the week my son and I visited Café de Bretagne once again. The food in the bistro was, as always, excellent. Unfortunately, the service during our visit this time was not as friendly as we were used to in the past. The gentleman was not pleased and was obviously unwilling to serve any more guests; you had the feeling of being a nuisance. The service seemed new as we hadn't seen it on previous visits. But maybe the gentleman will learn a few things about friendliness from the other service staff. For example, a 'please' or 'thank you' would be very nice. And as a guest I also expect a friendly face - but as I said, maybe that will come. Otherwise, we hope that Café de Bretagne will remain as it is before.

Excellent seafood and fish with French style. Wine also good. Friendly service. Quite expensive and they charge additional €5 for small bread basket which is strange. But overall a positive experience.

Actually a delicious fr. Restaurant but yesterday the fish soup tasted very bland and the mussels were very small. Furthermore, I was given a small Portion of fries served with mussels (thought that was part of it!), so I didn't order them and in the end I was charged €5. We also had smoked swordfish as a starter, which came without bread

Eigentlich waren wir sehr zufrieden mit dem Essen und unser Kellner war freundlich soweit, wobei andere am Nachbartisch den Service mit mehr Charme und Freude machten. Wir bestellen für die Vorspeise Austern und Crevetten rosé M sowie Rilettes Rotbarbe & Safran .Dazu zwei Hauptgänge sowie einen leckeren Sancerre. Als wir unser Rilette bekamen, staunten wir nicht schlecht……. Es lagen drei Ministücke Brot daneben!!! Als wir nach weiteren Brot fragten, bekamen wir als Antwort, das dieses zusätzliche Brot extra kostet und das bei fast 170,- Euro inklusive Trinkgeld was wir dort gelassen haben. Das fanden wir sehr enttäuschend und überhaupt nicht angemessen ! Das man hier beim Brot spart und dann fúr weiteres Brot Geld verlangt haben wir bisher noch nicht erlebt. Daher ist das Café de Bretagne für uns erst mal passé obwohl wir viele Male hier die Meeresfrüchte wirklich sehr genossen haben, auch wegen der Frische! Sehr schade, diese Entwicklung.

Tras haber llamado para reservar al llegar nos avisaron que faltaban diez minutos al cierre. Hemos ordenado todo al proprietario que nos trató de mala manera por el horario. Al final una sopa de pescado decente nos costó 40 euro. El ambiente nada especial, más bien maleducados. Como estropear una noche!

The food is OK, but the service is disastrous. Right from the start we were stressed that we should hurry up. We were even threatened that we wouldn't be served. In the end we were presented with the bill half officially, half handwritten because a mistake was made at another table which they then tried to blame on us. The food was okay, but the service was absolutely terrible.

The worst restaurant we have visited in recent years. We ordered a table on October 17th, 2024. I ordered stake mussels as a starter and my friend had . The pile mussels were filled with sand and the cod had a gram number of 80 g, but it should contain a gram number of 160 g. The rosemary potatoes were tough. The berry sauce was a nightmare. in short, never again Brittany. The wine we ordered was absolutely okay. Nevertheless, we would never come here again.

Wir waren zum Mittagessen hier auf Empfehlung. Scampis und Hummer waren okay. Aioli und Crêpe mit Karamell und Salz waren sehr gut. Längere Wartezeit für ein Lunch. Service gut.

Entramos por casualidad después de una visita a una exposición de arte El lugar estaba casi lleno, pero encontramos una pequeña mesa para dos. Tomé un Carpaccio de camarones mi esposa bacalao, ambos platos bien preparados. Más tarde se nos unió un buen amigo que tenía un plato de ostras. El servicio estaba bien, y disfrutamos de nuestra estancia.

This hotel deserves zero points and is not recommended at all. Poor entrees and service, poor explanations. Giving you 1 star is too redundant, you deserve 0 points.

A wonderful place for fans of northern French cuisine. The name fits exactly! I had scallop tartare with champagne and then great fish (forgot the name again...) with a mustard-herb crust (nice!) on mashed potatoes with crustacean foam. Plus a spicy entre-deux-mer, which rounded off the dish. Lovely the schnapps at the end. Running!
