We took a trip to Altenburg Castle yesterday. Unfortunately, we had to wait a long time for drinks. Several different drinks are served at the same window at the same time, which leads to a long wait. The food was good, but please only call/beep when your entire order is ready.

Home of Poldi. Great view over Germany's most beautiful city. Lovely beer garden with good food and great Bamberg beer. Good value for money.

We wanted to have lunch at Altenburg Castle today for a special occasion. We drove from Gerolzhofen and walked up from the city center. I came all the way up, as it's not that easy to get to, and checked the opening hours online beforehand. When I got there, I was told: "Closed today." According to the staff, it should be listed online, but it wasn't, very annoying!!!

Peaceful and relaxing location for a lovely lunch and coffee. Picturesque, easy to get to by car from Bamberg, with free parking nearby. Access to the castle courtyard is free, service at the restaurant hatches is friendly and welcoming.

I was back in Bamberg for the first time in a long time and went to the Altenburg with family and friends. Since I'm in a club, I wanted to visit the inn. We sat outside. I ordered a Ritterplatte (a traditional German dish), which was very generously filled. My family had schnitzel and currywurst, which was also very good. Everything tasted homemade. The beer garden is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Tours of the castle are open every day. The walk to the castle is a very pleasant and highly recommended option. You can reward yourself with a refreshing drink in the beer garden. The castle courtyard offers a lovely setting under the treetops.

Today I visited A1 with friends. The weather was wonderful and for me from Hamburg it was the perfect opportunity to go to the Altenburg again and enjoy a little piece of old home. The restaurant was recently taken over by a new tenant and I know him from before. Starting with a very warm welcome and a short tour of the castle, we quickly found our place and enjoyed the good service and I ordered a delicious currywurst + the best regional beer on tap. - The cold, fresh beer in combination with the crunchy currywurst and very tasty fries convinced me! The sausage had a good spiciness and I learned that the curry sauce was specially created and you can taste it. In summary, we enjoyed a very nice afternoon into the evening and we felt extremely comfortable! Thanks! I look forward to my future visits to this special place in Bamberg and can recommend it to everyone.

We had reserved a table for the Saturday evening before Easter, but by 7 p.m. several dishes were sold out - half of the eight schnitzel dishes with fries were no longer available. You won't find any of the beef dishes advertised on the menu. For an average of €16-18 per main course you get simple, fried cuisine without any Franconian character. Especially in a restaurant on the Altenburg - one of Bamberg's tourist highlights - you expect significantly more regionality, quality and selection. The concept seems careless, interchangeable and designed for tourism. It's a shame about this special place. Hopefully not too many guests get lost there - Franconia has so much more to offer in terms of cuisine. English Since the change of management, this place has sadly become a major disappointment. We had a reservation for Easter Saturday evening, but by 7 p.m. several dishes were already sold out – including half of the eight schnitzel options with fries. Despite the menu advertising "premium regional beef," there wasn’t a single beef dish available. Main courses cost 16–18 €, which is quite high for basic fried food lacking any regional flair. Considering this restaurant sits atop the scenic Altenburg, one of Bamberg’s most iconic spots, we expected more quality, regional variety, and care in the concept. Instead, it feels generic, uninspired, and purely tourist-focused. A real shame – Franconia has so much more to offer.

We were there at the opening of the beer garden and I unfortunately have to say that the staff were extremely overwhelmed at the beginning - however, towards the end it worked out and they got used to it - but I still find it a bit strange when you have to wait 15-20 minutes just because a barrel had to be changed. The atmosphere in the castle is of course breathtaking and you have a great view over Bamberg and the surrounding area. Definitely worth a trip.

Nice new cast. Good beer, all dishes ordered were rated as tasty. Service wasn't quite there yet for us, but still very nice. There's still something going on, but they'll definitely get it done.

We had a great evening in the newly opened restaurant. The hosts are very, very nice and accommodating. We felt at home. We were there for coffee and then dinner. It took a long time before we even got anything to drink. It was a warm day and we were there with children. They forgot orders and brought the wrong thing. After the slow start, however, a waitress came regularly and looked after us well without being intrusive. Except for the very salty fries, the food was delicious. I left most of the fries behind. So, nice in and of itself with upward potential. There was only a new opening at the beginning of March. They probably need a bit of time to get started, but I would definitely try again in a few weeks.

High above Bamberg, in the historic Altenburg, there has recently been a restaurant again. The “Altenburg1”. Here you look after your guests in a friendly and unobtrusive manner. The price-performance ratio is right. There is a small serving window where visitors to the castle can enjoy the great view with a delicious Bamberg beer or coffee and cake. Definitely worth a trip! If you don't want to (or can't) walk up, you can also reach Altenburg1 by car.

The food was very good, service very fast, and the ambiance was rustic...a castle feel. But unfortunately, the billing was chaotic at the end, and of course, due to the chaos with the billing, some items remained unpaid that were simply booked to the wrong tables. So, the end of the visit wasn't a highlight. You still need to work on that and train your staff. Otherwise, it was a great evening 👍 With 33 people and a turnover of €40 per person.

The new operating family at Altenburg 1 convinced us! The very tender goulash was accompanied by a delicious homemade salad and tasted great. Currywurst was also very good, the fries were crispy and the portion was large. Service friendly and super fast. All in all the A1 is "1A" ;-)

Given the location of the restaurant in the middle of the Altenburg, the owners could have afforded to set up a tourist trap. They don't have to put in the effort to have a successful restaurant, but they do! The food tastes wonderful, the service is quick and very friendly. There are also very solid vegetarian options for a Franconian restaurant. Small and cute atmosphere with a castle dog :) Super!

I went to the Altenburg 1 Restaurant with my girlfriend today and we had a really great evening! I had the beef goulash with spaetzle and it was excellent - the sauce in particular was incredibly tasty and the meat was wonderfully tender. My friend had the pike perch fillet, which was also excellent. The service was great and the hosts were incredibly friendly, so we immediately felt at home. The furnishings are cozy and the atmosphere invites you to linger. The crowning finale was chocolate soufflé and apple fritters with ice cream – both delicious! Overall, a thoroughly successful visit – we would love to come back!

Very good “Franconian food”. Nice staff who look after the guests and get all the things out of the way that get in the way of a pleasant lunch. Particularly worth mentioning is the delicious schnitzel that tastes like it comes from an organic butcher! We will come back 😊

We can't judge the food because there was no more food after 2 p.m., even though according to the internet the kitchen is open until 2:30 p.m. Still we queued for 20 minutes for a few drinks. The ambience and the view are great.

Absolute recommendation! Re-opening April 2025: Best Sauerbraten that I have eaten so far (as a Sauerbraten fan): super tender meat, perfect sauce, perfect dumpling and homemade red cabbage. And today I tried the roulade. Absolutely awesome!

The Altenburg in Bamberg is a real highlight for visitors to the city. It is located at the highest point in the city and offers a breathtaking all-round view. The view to the east, where the Jura mountain range extends, is particularly impressive. The castle tower, at 33 meters high, is a striking landmark and contributes to the impressive silhouette of the castle. Anyone who climbs the tower will be rewarded with an even better view. However, you should be prepared for a somewhat strenuous climb if you go to the castle from the parking lot. The path is steep, but definitely worth the effort. Overall, the Altenburg is a worthwhile excursion destination for anyone who appreciates history, architecture and beautiful views.

The castle is a recommendation to linger after the climb. The restaurant offers tasty meals and homemade cakes. When the sun is shining, you can sit outside in the beer garden and the view is magnificent.

Today the new tenants opened their restaurant with Franconian cuisine on the Altenburg. I was there straight for lunch and it was simply outstanding, my pike perch fillet with rosemary potatoes and vegetables was on point and all around a very tasty dish. The service was quick but not hectic, friendly but not fake. I will definitely come more often and feast on the culinary diversity of the upscale Franconian cuisine. I am very satisfied 5 stars in every respect.

Excellent cuisine, a real insider tip, the restaurant in the Altenburg, we ate very, very well, my pike-perch fillet with herb crust and beetroot was exquisite! The saddle of lamb was fried to perfection, the desserts were very attractively decorated and had excellent taste. Be sure to try it while you can!

Jedes Mal wenn wir (im Rahmen unseres Bayern-Urlaubs) in Bamberg sind, gehört der Gang vom Dom zur Altenburg dazu. Bisschen anstrengend der Fußweg aber als Normalo in ca. 45 Minuten machbar. Toller Ausblick, schöne Burg, kostenlos zu besuchen. Bequeme können auch direkt ober frei parken. Man kann dort zu vernünftigen Preisen essen und trinken und den Ausblick dazu genießen. Wetter muss natürlich passen. Der Rückweg ist dann natürlich super entspannt

Leider eine lange Schlange, nur um ein Bier zu bekommen.
