Berggasthaus Jenzig in Jena

We just had a wonderful beef roulade here, very generously filled with onions, bacon, and pickles. Highly recommended!

Great view, but prices are overpriced.

The mountain inn is located at the top of the Jenzig. We reached it via the Dinosaur Trail. The ambiance is "old" and has that typical GDR charm. The service is friendly and attentive. The food is wonderful; we had the pork goulash and the beef roulade, and the roulade was exactly as you'd imagine it. The goulash was also very, very delicious. Absolutely fantastic! It comes with Thuringian dumplings. Absolutely delicious and highly recommended.

If you like nature, simple, delicious food, and a cold beer, and especially aren't above self-service, this is the place for you! Everything is clearly signposted, and you'll be greeted at the bar by friendly hosts. If you sit in the dining room, where you're also served, you can hear the schnitzels being freshly pounded. I absolutely can't understand comments like, "I wasn't served, no signage!" etc. I generally go through life with my eyes wide open and, for the first time in a beer garden, I assume that it's self-service. Anyone who gets upset about something like that has, in my opinion, lost touch with the reality of the restaurant industry and the associated staff shortages! I especially love these anonymous criticisms on the internet! If I don't like something, I turn to the service staff and ask for clarification! Prices can also be controversial! I hope, knowing that the drinks and food aren't from a land of milk and honey, but from the local restaurant! I'll definitely be back again and again and enjoy the hosts, the view, and the food! Keep it up!!!!

Beautiful view over Jena, plenty of seating inside and outside, good food

The view alone makes this restaurant a top destination. It really gives you that Alpine feeling! 😃 I enjoyed a cool shandy. 😊

A worthwhile destination or stopover

Beautiful view, but unfortunately only ready-made food, and if you point it out, you're very harshly reprimanded and unfortunately, they don't allow for criticism. The prices are beyond belief. We've had better food in Garmisch Partenkirchen (homemade), and the value for money here is completely out of this world.

Self-service isn't a problem for us; it just needs to be posted somewhere. After sitting for about 10 minutes, and the waitress had already walked past us twice, we naturally wanted to order. A little text on the menu and a sign in the beer garden wouldn't have been a bad idea. I think we weren't the first to feel that way. Unfortunately, the food was really bad. The schnitzel was watery—I don't know how that's possible, but it was by far the worst schnitzel we've ever eaten. The fries were okay, but they were missing a bit of salt. The dumplings were really small and also kind of dry, as if they'd been kept warm for quite some time. I had a solijanka, and that was far from it. The whole thing was way too expensive, especially since it was self-service. This will definitely be our last visit.

We took advantage of the climb and then had a bite to eat at the mountain inn. Everything was very clean, and the service was very friendly. You can sit inside or outside. There's plenty of space. Highly recommended.

The climb is worth it, great view, great regional gastronomy

Highly recommended! We made a reservation for 5:30 p.m., even though the restaurant is actually only open until 6:00 p.m. The table was set for us inside, but we were able to squeeze together tables outside on the terrace in the beautiful weather and received very friendly service. The food was absolutely delicious. A huge thank you to the owners and staff.

Unfortunately, we had no luck with the food today – simply put, it was a disaster! My roulade was tough and inedible, the dumplings and red cabbage were half-decent, but what my companion had on her plate was absolutely terrible!!! Advertised as a daily special, roast beef with all sorts of ingredients, is unworthy of a restaurant in Thuringia!!! Not only was it tough and hard to chew, it also had a strange aftertaste! Unfortunately, we couldn't complain, as no one was there when we went. The view and the rustic ambiance on the "Matterhorn" in Jena are indescribable and always recommended!!! We'd love to come back, but not necessarily for the food...

Super friendly staff, great view, nice varied menu, prices are the same as everywhere, but you'll find something for everyone and you sit here in a really nice atmosphere.

Highly recommended as a hiking destination. Wonderful views over Jena and the Saale Valley, and excellent food. The schnitzel, freshly pounded from the pan, was perfect.

After climbing the dinosaur path, you'll be rewarded with ice cream and drinks. The prices are fair for the place and the staff was friendly. The view from the beer garden is beautiful.

The nature and the view from the terrace are always fantastic and you get to the top relatively quickly. After my hike yesterday, I wanted to end the day with a nice iced coffee, but was totally disappointed. For €6 you could get the good drinks from the tetra pack or mixed with powder...😳😩😵. A huge mountain of cream (perhaps based on Jenzig😉) and topped with an ice cream cone was certainly the most valuable part of the drink. I would have gotten cheaper with a beer. The cashier was friendly and I also turned a blind eye to the fact that the dishes were still on the table from the previous guests...certainly/hopefully (?) due to the lack of staff. But €6 for the “ready-made chimneys” is outrageous.

Absolutely recommended! Hospitality high above Jena!

After a walk, have a cup of coffee on the terrace with a great view. Unfortunately there was no requirement at the table, you had to get the drinks and food from inside yourself. Plum cake was thawed but still tasted good.

On my last visit everything was perfect.

Also highly recommended for Christmas Day. Unfortunately, the view of the valley is zero, but the lunch dishes are simply delicious.

A unique inn with a large terrace from which you have a unique view of Jena and the surrounding area, the food is prepared here ourselves, the staff is perfect, food is served quickly, something like that doesn't happen too often anymore

The service employee is a very young, handsome man who is very courteous and attentive. I'm already looking forward to the next visit.

Overall a nice place to stay. We had 2 ice creams and a shandy. We found prices to be sporty but still within the range for this outlook. Condition was also friendly. I don't know why but the smell in the entrance to the restaurant is really not pleasant. But we sat outside and enjoyed the view. Definitely suitable for stopping off.

Hosts super nice and really accommodating, but very shy. Get more feedback from guests, more conversations. You could do so much more up there. Colorful flowers. Friendlier for the guest. There may be food and drink menus outside during opening hours so that you can at least read and choose something. The self-service takes some getting used to but is understandable if you think about it. I love sitting up there, so I keep coming back. I've eaten here several times and it's always been very tasty. But... you definitely need a breath of fresh air. The flair is missing...

Positive: great view over Jena. Nice beer garden. Unfortunately, the food wasn't our thing at all. Partly cold, greasy, lettuce was floating in the water and wilted. Strong smell of toilet in the entire guest room 🤢 Overall, it's more aimed at tourists and hikers who only visit once than at regular customers. A pity.

Very tasty home-made mouse food. Great destination with children. It's a shame that there are no table conditions. This means you simply order less if you always have to go to the counter yourself. In addition, you feel a bit unwanted as a guest. As if it was too much trouble for the waiters to take an order at the table.

I think 4 euros for a roster is really excessive.

Hike along the road to Jenzig. You have a nice view over the city from there. We were initially alone in the restaurant, but later two families with small children came. The food was good and the innkeepers were friendly and nice. The descent is steep. The host cannot use a transport service to events.

Very good food, nice service, nice view of Jena, price a bit high but appropriate for the quality and portion, drinks a good 10% too expensive. The condition inside and out is getting old, but not shocking. Overall, we had a very nice Sunday lunch there and returned home feeling well-invigorated. Thanks.

Good food, nice service in a “simple” atmosphere.

Very nice view, especially outside in the warm season. Cappuccino unfortunately very weak. You can hardly taste the espresso. And cinnamon on it? The Radler is also rather mediocre. Prices are ok.

The view was amazing and the price was also right for these times.

Good food, quick service, wonderful view

It was delicious. We'll definitely come back.

Everything was fine, except for the smell in the toilet (according to my son).

Unfortunately I didn't like the roulade. But the service was very accommodating and only charged me for a side dish. While we ate the windows in the room were being cleaned. The children enjoyed it. There are plenty of board games available. The view is fantastic. The cone throwing game directly behind the restaurant is also very nice.

Ein hoch über Jena gelegenes Berggasthaus mit tollen Blick auf Jena und Umgebung.Ein Ort zum verweilen nach langem Aufstieg auf dem Saurierweg.

Hier wird für die Bergsteiger gut gesorgt,die oben ankommen wie frisch geduscht(mit Sachen).

Waren als größere Gruppe dort, trotz verschiedener Essen sehr zeitnah alle dieses bekommen. Geschmeckt hat es auch sehr gut. Aussicht ist grandios und die Preise ok. Kommen gerne mal wieder.

Anreise von Saalfeld. Parken auf dem Wanderparkplatz vor dem Beginn des Saurierpfades. ABER: Der Wanderparkplatz hat noch keine Hausnummer und ist über das Navi nicht zu orten. Er liegt am Ende der Strasse, in der sich ein Wohnhaus der Lebenshilfe befindet. Dessen Adresse: am Jenzig 20, 07749 Jena. Daran vorbeifahren, Platz liegt am Ende der Strasse, ist relativ klein und nach unten geneigt. Parkmöglichkeiten an dieser als Sackgasse bezeichneten Strasse auf der linken Seite. Der Saurierpfad ist gut ausgeschildert, mit einer Asphaltschicht belegt und eben, aber hat eine ca 10%ige Steigung. Jedoch stehen in mittleren Abständen gut bis sehr gut erhaltene Bänke an der Seite, damit man zwischendurch auch mal ausruhen kann. Man sollte sich Zeit nehmen, die nach oben reichlicher werdender Ausblicke auf Jena und dessen Umland geniessen. Nach etwa 1400 Metern Steigung und vielen Serpentinen hat man das Ziel Berggaststätte Jenzig erreicht. Ausschnaufen, schauen, die Terrasse und das Haus beäugen. Man hat die Wahl: Terrasse oder Gaststube. Terrasse ist Biergarten mit Selbstbedienung, heisst reingehen und bestellen. Das Bestellte ist vom Biergartengast gleich zu bezahlen. Getränke nimmt er dann mit, Speisen werden serviert. In der Gaststube das gewohnte Prozedere. Ich hab uns das Schnitzel mit Champions in Rahmsosse und Pommes und Gemüsebeilage nebst einer kleinen Cola bestellt. Kurz darauf hörten wir das Klopfen aufs Fleisch und hatten später das Vergnügen mit dem Gericht. Ja, richtig gelesen: Der Teller war randvoll, das Schnitzel gross und zart, gut durchgebraten. Die Rahmsosse mit den Champi's schmeckte klasse und die Gemüsebeilage war absolut frisch, reichhaltig und auch gut mit Kräutern versehen, sowie fein gewürzt. Die Cola war frisch und schön kalt. Das Glas war voll. Das sowohl der die Bestellung aufnehmende Herr an der Kasse, als auch die uns später bedienende Dame äusserst höflich und freundlich auftraten, hat uns sehr gefreut. Zumal wir Solches nicht überall erleben durften. Wir haben die Speisen und auch die Aussicht von der Terrasse genossen. Dann jedoch zog es uns noch ein wenig weiter. Zum Aussichtspunkt, der noch 'n paar Meter weiter weg lag. Der Weg führte am Waldrand weiter über den Jenzig und man hatte einen fantastischen Blick auf Jena mit seinen Stadtteilen und die es umgebende Natur. Bänke und Tische gab es auch hier viele. Man konnte sich also auch stundenlang hier aufhalten und Alles mit voller Lust geniessen. Ach ja, ich hätt's fast vergessen. Kurz hinter der Gaststätte befinden sich auf einer Wiese noch überdachte Campingtische + -bänke und dazu mittig eine Stelle, an der es sich grillen lässt. Okay, irgendwann haben wir kehrt gemacht. Sind in die Gaststube marschiert und haben uns dort an Kaffee und Kuchen gelabt ... Gemütlich die Serpentinen runter - uns kamen immer Menschen entgegen und auch oben war immer "Zuzug" - uns in unserer kleinen Kalesche gemütlich gemacht und heimwärts gerollt. Mal schauen, wo es uns noch hinweht ...

Sehr gute Hausmannskost - auch bei Pommes mit Ketchup und Majo gibt es einen ordentlichen Salat für die Kids dazu. Über die Geschichte der Gastwirtschaft gibt es auch sehenswerte alte Fotos

Sehr gutes Jägerschnitzel, hammer Aussicht und top Service

Für die Kinder gab es ein Amulett und kleinen Sauerier, sehr nett. Essen solide.

Es war wunderschön, wir hatten Selbstbedienung aber das war okay.Das Essen wurde dann an unseren Tisch gebracht von einer sehr freundlichen Kellnerin. Die Aussicht wartraumhaft.Der Muttertag unvergesslich.

Nach unserem schönen Ausflug auf dem Saurierpfad, kam direkt der Hunger auf und so suchten wir uns ein Plätzchen in diesem Gasthaus bzw im Biergarten. Sicher könnte man hier mehr draus machen, aber ich gebe 5 Punkte, da das Essen wirklich super und die Mitarbeiter sehr nett waren. Die tolle Aussicht über Jena rundet den Aufenthalt hier ab.

Echt super nach dem Aufstieg, mit dem Ausblick und einem erfrischendem Getränk und gutem Essen belohnt zu werden.

Der Saurierweg ist sehr interessant für Kinder und oben angekommen, hat man eine tolle Aussicht über Jena.

Aussicht und Lage ist super! Essen nichts besonderes und die Klöße gehen gar nicht, leider nicht empfehlenswert.

Nach geschafftem Aufstieg war es sehr angenehm ganz schnell ein Getränk zu bekommen. Eine bestellte Solianka war heiß und in 5 min da. Klasse.

Nette Bedienung, schöne Aussicht, Essen war gut und schönes Ambiente

Alles was zum Männertag benötigt wurde war vorhanden. Alles vom Grill ist empfehlenswert, besonders der Kartoffelsalat. Eine Steigerung zu ehemaligen Besuchen.

Der Jenzig ist ein toller Berg mit prima Aussicht. Der Saurierpfad ist für Kinder sehr toll und man kann viel Interessantes hier kennenlernen. Ganz typisch für ein Berggasthaus ist, dass über Jahrzehnte eine Müllkippe an der Rückseite angelegt wurde, über die die letzten Jahr nie geredet wurde. Sie liegt mitten im Naturschutzgebiet. Auf meinem Youtube-Kanal gibt es einen Infofilm dazu. Auf ca. 40 Meter Breite gab es mehrere Einwurfpunkte von Abfällen aller Art. Bis zu 80 oder 100 Meter sind Töpfe, Räder, Cds, Dackabdeckungen, Teller, Geschirr, Schränke und Küchengeräte, Hausmüll und alles mögliche mehr im Hang nach unten gekullert. Entdeckt im Januar 2022, gemeldet im Februar, wurden seitdem die groben Gegenstände bei Beräumungen entfernt, der kleinteilige Abfall liegt schätzungsweise an manchen Stellen bis zu 2 m mächtig.
