Betje – Authentic Ethiopian flavours in the heart of Berlin Having lived for many years in Ethiopia and enjoyed Ethiopian cuisine across Europe and the United States, I can confidently say that Betje is one of the most authentic Ethiopian restaurants outside Ethiopia itself. With more than 25 years of history in Berlin, it is a true culinary landmark, bringing the spirit of Addis Ababa straight to the heart of Germany. The menu is outstanding. The Doro Wat – Ethiopia’s iconic spicy chicken stew with boiled egg – is rich and full of flavour. The tibs, whether lamb or beef, are tender, perfectly spiced and deeply satisfying. The kitfo (minced beef, served raw or lightly cooked as lebleb) is exceptional and prepared true to tradition. Vegetarians and vegans are equally spoilt for choice: the Misir Wot (red lentils in berbere sauce) and the mild Kik Alicha (yellow split peas) are delicious, authentic and perfectly paired with fresh, spongy injera. To accompany the food, Betje offers traditional tej (Ethiopian honey wine), as well as Ethiopian and Eritrean beers. The Ethiopian coffee ceremony is a highlight not to be missed – aromatic, freshly roasted coffee served in the most authentic way, creating a memorable cultural experience. The atmosphere is welcoming and vibrant, decorated with Ethiopian art and crafts, while the service is warm, friendly and attentive. Betje is far more than a restaurant – it is a cultural journey and an unmissable experience for anyone in Berlin who loves authentic food.

I was at Bejte a week ago on a Friday. The food was delicious, and compared to other Ethiopian restaurants, they offered a much wider selection. Unfortunately, I have to say I was very disappointed with the service. We arrived at 7:30 p.m., and it took about 30 minutes for someone to come to us. We ordered some drinks first, and unfortunately, it took another half hour for them to actually arrive. I had to approach the staff to ask for the drinks, and only then were they finally brought. The food also took a very long time. In total, we waited over an hour for everything to arrive at our table, which was a shame. Great value for money and great taste. If you're really hungry, I wouldn't go to Bejte on a Friday night, as you might get forgotten or have to wait a very long time.

There were ten of us and we had a truly wonderful evening. The friendliness and warmth of the staff deserves special mention; the food was superb, a real experience, as was the coffee ceremony. We were all thrilled and left the restaurant feeling completely happy. Definitely a must-try!

We ate wonderfully. We had one main course each with a cup of the tipical tea, the dessert and the coffee (served with pop corn) and we ended up being SO full and happy spending only 25€ each. The food was delicious (different vegetarian/vegan options), the owner was kind and the atmosphere was just on point. I loved everything.

A truly fantastic Ethiopian restaurant with absolutely delicious food, a wonderful ambiance, and incredibly friendly and attentive staff. Anyone who appreciates African cuisine or wants to try something new should definitely come here. Reservations are recommended, as the restaurant isn't particularly large and gets busy. Our first African meal. And it tasted exceptionally good. We had very friendly service; despite a spilled glass of water, no one seemed to be bothered. The Ethiopian bottled beer is also a must-try!

0.7L bottle of water €9.00, 0.4L apple juice €6.00, 0.4L beer €4.80, 0.5L wheat beer €5.00. What are you supposed to drink here? The prices on the website are old. I've attached a photo of the new prices. Food & service OK, no cushions for sitting outside.

Nice experience especially the fact that you are eating using your hands. Different flavours, the bread was a little soggy for my taste.

Bejte is a cozy restaurant with wonderful and extremely friendly staff. We really enjoyed our meal. The lamb was wonderfully seasoned and the vegetarian dishes were delicious. We highly recommend it!

Overall, would definitely recommend this local Ethiopian restaurant in the Nollendorfplatz area of Berlin. Food was very tasty, decently priced, and it's Germany, so you can get a Radler or Bier with your meal. They had a nice traditional Ethiopian coffee setup in the interior, which was dimly lit, and the restrooms were also in need of a refresh. Service was quite average, nothing too special, nothing rushed either. On the day I went, the zilzil tibs (grilled steak with onions and spices) was quite good, and they provided ample injera as well.

Delicious food. Finally got to try Ethiopian coffee which was toasted in front of us. Best meal yet!!

This traditional Ethiopian restaurant has been serving all races of people for over three decades. I noticed that guests have to book months in advance to get service; it was amazing. They showed up and enjoyed the wonderful hospitality and food. They were satisfied.

Great food ❤️ Well-seasoned, authentic, and simply delicious. Truly one of the best places in Berlin for Eritrean/Ethiopian food, you won't be disappointed. The food tastes fresh and truly as it should. Locals also frequent the restaurant, which is always a good sign. Special recommendation: Spicy Kilwa (braised beef with onions and peppers in a clay pot). There are also plenty of vegan options! Everything is incredibly good. It's best to make a reservation if you're coming as a group.

Excellent Ethiopian cuisine makes you want to visit Ethiopia!

I've eaten there twice. I find it cultural and the food is delicious. The people were always nice and friendly. The coffee was also prepared traditionally. I think many countries and cultures need to make things more traditional rather than modern!

Ethiopian food is rich in flavor, and the beef is so tender and juicy that it practically melts in your mouth.The unique spices in Ethiopian cuisine make every bite delicious, and the beef stands out for its extraordinary softness.

Excellent food and super friendly staff!

Now, Ethiopian cuisine is very foreign to me. The visit didn't help me become any more familiar with it. However, the positive feedback from many other guests showed that I'm pretty much alone in this regard.

This place is full of scammers. They charged us 16,50€ for some “extra meat” we never ordered. When we brought it up, the staff was rude and defensive, insisting we asked for it — which we absolutely didn’t. As expected, they refused to refund the extra charge. Total rip-off, avoid at all costs!

Very cozy, good prices, delicious food and a great coffee ceremony

I had lamb, and it was so-so, with a sour aftertaste. I've eaten at other Ethiopian restaurants, and this was the worst. The people are friendly and the decor is nice, but it's lacking in the core. Maybe I should have ordered something else, but there shouldn't be bad dishes.

The ambience was nice and the food also. But man the workers there were really pissed off, and you can pay with Card with a expense of minimum 25€.

Very tasty! I have eaten here many times and each time was great. Maybe it's because I like injera. It is a porous rubbery Ethiopian flatbread with a slightly sour taste. If you like injera, you will enjoy Ethiopian cuisine.

Whilst staff are welcoming and decor appears genuine and Ethiopia sourced - the core of any restaurant will obviously be the abilities shown by its kitchen… Sad to say that contrary to many appreciative reviews I would claim that Betje delivers well under par. For an Ethiopian restaurant presenting individual dishes on individual injeras with this level of ”blendness” just doesn’t cut it. A restaurant with any level of ambition simply should not fail on this scale with traditional stables. If you are looking for more than an ”Ethiopian environment” the only advise will unfortunately be ”look elsewhere”

Traditional, fresh dishes, some quite spicy – ​​normal for Ethiopian standards. People usually eat with their fingers, so please wash your hands beforehand. The restrooms could be improved :) We'd love to come back!

Between the Bülowstr. stops. and Nollendorfplatz is where Betje-Ethiopia is located. The service was extremely courteous and the atmosphere is very inviting. There are also outdoor spaces. The mixed vegetarian platter that I ordered came very quickly and tasted fantastic. The homemade honey wine is also highly recommended. In my opinion, price-performance was right. Clear recommendation!

We have enjoyed Bejte Ethiopia’s hospitality since 2014. Great place to take out-of-town guests, celebrate a birthday or other special occasion. Food is excellent, extensive menu, indoor-outdoor seating, really excellent staff.

We were lucky that they happened to be having a buffet. It was great; you could try everything, and the prices were reasonable. The tables are pretty close together, which is a bit annoying.

Ethiopian food is flavourful and has options for all kinds of tastes, my go-to cuisine in any city. The vegan injera with cooked vegetables and lentils combination (number 14!) is a complete full meal. Try that with some Ouzo on ice. It was so good I went to it two days in a row for dinner. The people serving are friendly and welcoming.

Finally! I was looking for an Ethiopian restaurant for a long time and after a few disappointments I happened upon Bejte. The vegetarian combo for 2 (€32) was super tasty. Lentils in 4 variations, kale and lettuce. We were fed up.

Very cozy restaurant with friendly staff and amazing food. We always get the vegetarian platter, which has plenty of flavor and a lot of variety. The drinks are just as nice - coffee comes with a serving of fresh popcorn. I recommend you try out the DjuDju beer as well! Lastly, don’t make the mistake of skipping dessert; they have a lovely dish of sesame, almonds and dates.

Extensive multilingual menu. We had a lovely vegan platter. I have deducted a star as the Injera (traditional pancake the good is eaten with) was very wet in some places, which wasn't pleasant, but it was mostly good. The Tej (honey wine) was exceptional. Lovely decor and good atmosphere and service. We were lucky to be fitted in as it was busy, so recommend reserving.

Great atmosphere for anyone who values ​​hospitality and simplicity. Food was super tasty. You eat with your hands, i.e. without cutlery. Price-performance ratio is absolutely appropriate for a big city like Berlin.

Food is very good. I only know Ethiopian cuisine from Washington, DC, (I have never been to Ethiopia) and Bejte Ethiopia compares to the best I had there. The staff is super friendly and attentive. The furnishings are not high-end and chic, but exactly that makes the restaurant cozy and authentic. I highly recommend them and will visit again soon.

The food was very good in a nice atmosphere and they created an interesting map with information about the country. Very nice employees! Unfortunately I found it a bit cold, the heaters were off, there was no toilet paper/drying paper in the toilet - but based on the reviews, that doesn't seem to be the rule. It's worth it!

Everything is exquisite! Delicious honey wine, amazing coffee, and the dessert is an extraordinary surprise made of almond, dates, sesame. The service is ok, but the food makes up for it.

It’s dreamland in here, cannot recommend the lentil soup enough (bowls are small so get two at LEAST!) their house tea is amazing and everyone there was just lovely

Scovato nella zona in cui alloggiamo in albergo per evitare di trovarci poi in mezzo alla battaglia di botti e scoppi del capodanno tedesco, questo ristorantino etiope dall'aria piuttosto dimessa, collocato a pochi passi dalla stazione della metropolitana U-2 di Nollendorfplatz, si è rivelato una scelta eccellente. Ovviamente non ha niente a che vedere con i locali di classe, assomiglia più ad un caffè che ad un ristorante vero e proprio, ma il cibo che offre è copioso, delizioso e a prezzo modico (32 euro un luculliano mix carnivoro e vegetariano). Data l'ormai lunga esperienza che ho della cucina del Corno d'Africa, provato in vari paesi (ohimè, non in loco), mi sento di dire che Bejte è ai primi posti in questo campo. Fra l'altro, molto buoni erano anche il tipico vino al miele, servito nella caratteristica caraffina, gli unti e saporiti sambussa e i due cocktails ordinati. Il tutto, con bicchiere di vino e acqua, è costato, per due, 75 euro. E il gentilissimo personale ha offerto lo spumante della mezzanotte. Particolare qui non secondario: si può pagare con carta di credito, evitando il seccante rito del prelievo di contanti al bancomat imposto da molti altri locali.

Were here before Christmas for a Christmas party. The staff is very nice and overall everything seems authentic and simple. We had to wait quite a long time for the food, which could have been better. The dishes and plates were good, but personally not really outstanding. Whether vegan/vegetarian or with meat, there is something for everyone. Prices for drinks are quite expensive at times.

Place that seemed friendly, with acceptable but heavy food and very little meat for €30. The problem was also that they charged me €5 for a glass of water, they didn't even bring me the bottle and when I asked they told me that the bottle costs €9. I have never paid so much for a glass of water

As the child of an Ethiopian mother, I can say this is some of the best Ethiopian food you can get! Authentic and delicious! 10/10 reccomend, the best Ethiopian restaurant in Germany by far!

It was my first time trying Ethiopian and in general African food and I really liked it! Me and my friends were lucky enough to meet the owner of this place, who is a charming Ethiopian lady. It turned out she speaks Polish which was surprsing! We had a lovely chat after dinner. Disclaimer: I'm Polish :) This place is worth of visiting :)

Bejte is our first address when we want to eat Ethiopian food in Berlin. It is very cozy and warm and also child-friendly. There is really delicious and diverse food, even for vegetarians. Tej and Buna (honey wine + coffee) are also highly recommended. We can only recommend it.

One of my favorite restaurants in Berlin. I have to go there at least once a month. We always order some Sambusa, the vegan platter with extra injera, Dju-dju beer (passion fruit is my favorite) and the amazing coffee. (The lentil soup is also fantastic). They have the best injera in town, so be careful, it’s addicting!!
