Apfelweingaststätte Klaane Sachsehäuser in Frankfurt am Main

Last weekend, we wanted to eat here as a couple. There were plenty of free tables, none of which were reserved when we asked. When we inquired whether we could sit at one of the free tables, we received a curt reply that the waiter didn't feel like wiping down a table just for two guests and that we should join other guests at a relatively full table. The other guests were clearly just as unimpressed. It seems that good service and hospitality are only offered to larger groups at this restaurant. Aren't two guests, who could easily generate over €100 in revenue, worth a quick wipe down of one of the many free tables?

A traditional local cuisine restaurant, Klaane Sachsehäuser Founded in 1886, the "Klaane Sachsehäuser" is one of the oldest apple wine taverns in Frankfurt's Sachsenhausen district and has been a symbol of hospitality, cheer, and coziness ever since. Since its acquisition in 2023 by experienced restaurateur Stefan Kaden, who was previously a partner in the "Fichtekränzi" apple wine tavern and subsequently owned the "Atschel" apple wine tavern for over 20 years, the "Klaane Sachsehäuser" has once again become one of the most popular addresses among Frankfurt's apple wine taverns. There are plenty of reasons for this: firstly, the well-maintained, traditional ambiance, and secondly, of course, the consistently high quality of the cuisine. Quaint apple wine pub in Sachsenhausen

Excellent restaurant with local specialties. We ordered the meat platter to share between four people. Good value for money, excellent service with great kindness towards our two-year-old son. We highly recommend it!

I've never been treated like that by a server before. Because she didn't realize her colleague had shown us to a table, she snatched the menus out of our hands and practically yelled at us to leave. She said it was unacceptable that she'd cleared a table and then strangers would sit there. Absolutely unbelievable.

We were looking for a place to have a drink and play cards on a Saturday evening. Apparently, this isn't allowed at Klaane Sachsehäuser, which is perfectly fine. However, the woman outside the establishment was incredibly rude when we asked if there was room to order drinks and play cards. Even though the food and drinks are good, we probably won't be back after this experience.

Good food and a lovely restaurant in the heart of Sachsenhausen. What was a real bummer for us, however, was that the initially sparse service (long waits for service) was even worse when the male waitress actively demanded tips. We won't be coming back.

Four of us were there for lunch on a Wednesday. We didn't need a reservation and were seated right away. The service was super friendly and attentive. The food was truly delicious and the price was absolutely fair. Thank you for the lovely time, and we look forward to our next visit.

Very authentic real German food and experience! The waiter laugh at me every time I go there and asks me what to drink and I ask for tea 😅🥲 other than that, they have awesome Wiener schnitzel and their in yard is lovely. Every time my in-laws are in town, they have to take us there ❤️

We came here on October 22nd at 2:00 PM on the recommendation of friends. Since the weather was lovely outside, we chose a table in the courtyard, whereupon the waitress ran out and said, and I quote, "I'm not serving you, it's too cold outside!" This worried us, because in that case, they should move the tables away from the street so people wouldn't wait for those seats. Moreover, this waitress, who was "freezing," was constantly smoking in the courtyard. We decided to order our own beers and sit in our preferred seats. At the bar, the same waitress charged us for three beers and then went off to make a phone call, so we had to wait a while for someone to pour us beers. Afterward, it turned out they couldn't give us €100 (the bill came to €17.10). We decided not to tip because we were so annoyed by the incompetent service, at which the waiter grimaced and rolled his eyes. Unfortunately, despite the atmosphere, I don't want to go there again and can't recommend it to you!

We decided to visit a restaurant that had been recommended to us. We arrived and wanted to sit outside—it was 16 degrees—but they refused to serve us. So we decided to order anyway and just bring the food outside ourselves. The waiters were very rude and aggressive towards us. Overall: 1 point.

I really wanted to try authentic Frankfurt cuisine, and this restaurant was the perfect place for it! The atmosphere was lively, the service was excellent, and the food portions were huge and generous. The order was Frankfurter Schnitzel, Schaufelchen and a glass of Apfelwein. A great spot to enjoy a true local dining experience!

This is NOT a typical apple wine bar! We wanted to try a new apple wine bar on a Saturday and arrived at Klaane Sachsehäuser with six people around 4:00 PM. After choosing a table and getting our first round of drinks, there were no more reservations to be seen. To place our food order, we had to actively search for it and were able to place our order. Shortly afterward, a reservation placed a "reserved" sign on our table. We pointed out that we had ordered food. The server said this was absolutely no problem. After waiting an hour for the food, we looked for this reservation again and asked about it. Here, we received the blunt reply, "I'm off duty!" So we continued looking for another one. Other guests who arrived later had already eaten by this time. We had finished our meals and all still had drinks. Then another person came and presented us with the bill. She told us to leave. Luckily, we had empty bottles with us to fill our Bembel with. This behavior is neither German nor traditionally appropriate for Sachsenhausen. This is behavior I only know from North America. Why don't you open a McDonald's? It's more in keeping with this service and won't damage Sachsenhausen's reputation!

Authentic Äbblwoi (wine)! Truly Hessian! Delicious food. Down-to-earth and good. Seevuce is accommodating, customer-oriented, and really on the ball. We'd gladly go back! There's plenty of delicious food and wholesome Äbblwoi (wine).

Super delicious and generous portions. You can skip the online reservation, though, as for some reason you can't find it on site. 😵‍💫 We were then squashed to a table with another group, even though there were free tables all around us, which were still free when we left. 😞 We'll be back anyway – hoping we won't have to eat in such cramped conditions. 🤞🏼

I was there alone. And not for the first time. The service left a lot to be desired. They didn't ask if I wanted anything else to eat. It was hectic, even though the dining room was only a quarter full. I won't be going there again for the foreseeable future.

Wonderful local cuisine restaurant where you are with local people and not crowded! The service was exceptional and the prices very reasonable compared to the other side of the Main!

We went there for dinner one evening at 5:00 p.m. Of the entire restaurant, at most five tables were occupied. When we asked the waiter, who was about 50 years old, for four extra plates, he told us that all the plates were "dirty right now." He also lectured us that "only in Asia do people share food," and in Germany, "everyone gets their own plate." This made the evening very unpleasant for us and gave the impression that Asian guests are not welcome there.

Typical regional dishes. The food was good and the portions were large. The green sauce was delicious. The service was good. The restaurant is cozy.

A quaint, cozy Frankfurt restaurant. Inside and outside. A reasonable and affordable selection of dishes. From classic Frankfurt dishes to regional specials, you'll always find something interesting on the daily, seasonal, and weekly menus. Service is friendly and fast. Everything is straightforward. Dogs are also welcome.

Haven't eaten here but this is my special Frankfurt place. Very welcoming owner who loves to whistle and pour Apfelwein. I have no doubt the food would be excellent.

I absolutely enjoyed my visit to this restaurant! I picked it because I wanted to have some traditional German food in a classic German setting, and Klaane Sachsehäuser met all my expectations. The restaurant is quite large, with both indoor and outdoor seating. Since the weather was nice, I chose a table outside. Even though it was Sunday around 3 p.m., the place wasn’t very busy. Inside the restaurant has a classy, traditional German look and was very clean. The outdoor courtyard had a lovely design with plants, flowers, and decor touches; and everything was kept spotless. I really enjoyed the atmosphere all around me! My waiter was a very sweet guy who spoke excellent English. He took my order quickly, and the food arrived within about 12 minutes. The menu is fairly large, with a very good selection of German dishes. I went with the Classic Bratwurst Meal, which included two grilled bratwursts, mashed potatoes and sauerkraut. The meal was super tasty, everything was flavorful! The only minor issue for me was the portion balance – there was a bit too much sauerkraut, which I’m not a big fan of. Personally, I would have preferred more mashed potatoes instead. For my drink I ordered an apple juice, and it was fantastic – as apple juice in Germany always is. The menu prices were reasonable. My bill came to about €18. A big plus is that the restaurant accepts credit cards and Apple Pay, since many German restaurants in Frankfurt still only take cash for some reason (I’ve had this issue recently at a few other places). I can definitely recommend eating at Klaane Sachsehäuser! Based on what I tried and saw on other people’s plates, the food here generally seems very tasty, and the restaurant’s vibes make it even better!

Very tasty, inexpensive food in a rustic ambience

You can eat really well there. Frankfurter schnitzel with fried potatoes is always a hit, the best in the area in my opinion. The staff always has something to chat about and is in a good mood, taking time for both adults and children. The price/performance ratio is great; I'd pay more for the schnitzel, but we still need to talk about the price above the water for the Bembel. 😋

Very poorly organized - disappointing

A great, lively restaurant with a beer garden in the shady courtyard. Here you can enjoy excellent local food, but also enjoy a pleasant atmosphere with good drinks. The beer selection is small but excellent, and I really enjoyed the apple wine.

A wonderful, traditional apple wine tavern with a beautiful courtyard. The service was very friendly and accommodating (as is typical in apple wine bars). The rump steak was good; the meat platter, unfortunately, was not. The rib and the bacon on top were not appetizing. The hand cheese was completely off, being far too fresh and not marinated. The apple wine was okay, the Pinot Blanc was good. A 4 for the atmosphere, but only a 3 for the food. We'll be back anyway!

When I was there, the service in my area seemed uncoordinated and therefore not on the ball. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere is great anyway. Please visit.

We spontaneously went for lunch. We were pleasantly surprised. Very friendly staff. Lovely beer garden. The food was extremely delicious. After the green sauce, we wished we could have diverted our plate. We'd go back anytime we're in Frankfurt.

A complete disaster... We arrived at the restaurant at 9:50 p.m. and were told we could still get something to eat. Unfortunately, it took 20 minutes before we could order, and after another 10 minutes, we were told there was nothing left to eat. The waiters were more concerned with small talk than serving the guests. Not recommended!

We arrived and were told we could order food... They left us waiting for more than 15 minutes for someone to come and serve us and finally when they arrived, they took our order and a while later they told us we couldn't eat.

Very poor service. When we arrived at 10:50 pm, we were informed that we could still order food. At 10:10 pm, we finally ordered our food. After 15 minutes, we were told we could no longer eat. I don't recommend it. They have no dedication to service. Rude.

Spectacular food, degrading and racist treatment, the waiters insult you and take you for a fool. We reserved a table for 6 adults and 6 children. The restaurant was full on the terrace, and we tried to order, specifically 15 minutes, then the food took almost 40 minutes. I must say that everything we ordered was excellent and with generous portions: sausages, Schweinebraten, Frankfurter schnitzel. Drinking beer and cider undiluted. The problem comes with the desserts, which try to trick you. We didn't want to insist, so we politely ordered 4 Apple Strudels. After 30 minutes, they told us they would close in 5 minutes. We remembered we had 4 desserts pending and... In 3 minutes, they appeared with 9! When we mentioned there were only 4... they corrected us with a scowl. When we went to pay, up to four waiters appeared (two of whom had never appeared before during the entire dinner), unexpectedly shouting, "I hate Spanish people," "you're disgusting," "get out of my country," "we don't want to see you again," and in an aggressive manner. They charged us four for eight desserts, then corrected it, then charged five, then corrected it, and finally charged four, threatening to call the police. They were always shouting and challenging us, surrounding us. We insisted they call them, saying we weren't in trouble, and then... they started pushing and threatening us, saying, "Get out of here and we'll talk about it," with looks, shoves, and a defiant tone. This attitude is shameful in a cheerful, friendly country and city where everyone helps and understands you. Racism in the 21st century is unacceptable, and there have been several episodes of this.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting this wonderful apple wine bar in Frankfurt am Main, and what can I say? It was a highlight in every way! The food was outstanding, authentic, fresh, and prepared with love. Every course was a delight, from the appetizer to the dessert. The ambiance is quaint, cozy, and yet tasteful! Exactly what you'd expect from a true apple wine bar. You immediately feel welcome and at home. A special compliment goes to our server, Edward: friendly, attentive, and truly passionate about his work. He rounded off our evening perfectly with his warm manner and professionalism. I highly recommend this restaurant! Whether for a relaxed dinner, a meeting with friends, or simply to experience Frankfurt at its best. I'll definitely be back!

The place is very nice, in summer it has a nice courtyard. The food is good, average for typical German restaurants. We had booked for 5 and they wanted to force us to share a small table with other people, after insistence they made the couple who were practically glued to us move. For the rest the dinner was good

Since there are many pubs around, I thought they would all be similar, but the owner was very cheerful. It's a noisy place~~ where you can spend time with friends without worrying about anything. The potato dish was really delicious~~ but I forgot to take a picture, so all I have is the crepe I ate for dessert~~ but that wasn't that great, and the apple pie (Apfelstrudel) here is really delicious! We were there last Saturday for lunch, and everything was perfect. The food was delicious, the place beautiful, and very quiet even though there were quite a few people eating. The waiters were excellent, very friendly, and made us feel at home :) It was one of their first days, but it felt like they'd been there forever. A 10/10 place 😊

The food is very good and the portions are generous. In my case, I tried the Jäggersnitzel with mushrooms, and it was incredible, super good! The place is huge, with several seating areas, so you should take your time, as if it's full, the food can take a while to come out. The service was great and the price was good.

The food and ambiance were commendable. Some of the staff were extremely incompetent and unfriendly. They tend to spill drinks all over their pants, don't listen, and forget half of the food, like the appetizer or a side dish. Finally, the waiter embarrasses the guest because they don't want to tip due to the dismal service. Please replace the staff urgently.

We had reserved a table for ten people. However, our reservation was canceled on the spot because we were apparently too drunk. However, there were no people in our group who drank alcohol; everyone was sober. Apparently the good mood was disturbing. I have never experienced such pathetic service. Especially since every single table in the restaurant was free.

Very nice historic inn. You have a large selection of hearty dishes, especially from Frankfurt and Hessian cuisine. There is a weekly changing lunch menu with a good selection, so there is something for everyone. The food tastes excellent and the portions and prices are ok. You get full. There is an interior area that looks like a historical restaurant should look like. The outside area consists of a large courtyard surrounded by beautiful old buildings. If it's too full here, there are enough tables in front of the restaurant shaded by old trees. The service is nice and the service is quick, so you can eat there in peace even during your lunch break. Parking is a bit difficult, but if you walk for 5 minutes you can always find one. You will be compensated by excellent food in an original Frankfurt cozy atmosphere

The atmosphere was good, and the service of the other waiter was good, except for one waiter, who I think had a really bad attitude towards us, and was just acting racial microagression: we asked him if he could provide extra plates, because we wanted to share some food with each other, and then he was angry and told us “we don’t have enough plates, and you Asians always like this — you wanted extra plates…” I don’t feel comfortable with his words, it’s ok if he doesn’t want to provide extra plates, we are not demanding or pushing him at all, it’s just a question. But his words assuming all people from broad and diverse group behave the same way really exposes his ignorance, and lack of respect to his customers. I don’t think this is what waiters are expected to behave. I was disappointed at his attitude.

The Klaane Sachsenhäuser is a real highlight in Frankfurt! Extremely cozy, authentic and run with a lot of heart. The cider is first-class, the food – especially the Handkäs and the schnitzel – is typically Hessian and super tasty. The atmosphere is relaxed and inviting, the service warm and attentive. If you want to experience Frankfurt, this is the right place for you. Clear 5 stars!

Best schnitzel in Sachsenhausen! We have already tested a few and think the schnitzel and spaetzle are the best here. The current asparagus menu is also great and tastes great! The service is great, everyone is super nice, extremely attentive and always quick to help! 🌞

Unfortunately the apple cider was totally stale/watery. We had to wait a very long time to place our order. The landlord was extremely unfriendly because we mixed Äppler with Cola. He came to us twice and threatened to ban us from the house... it was really borderline and no longer meant to be funny.

The food and atmosphere were great—we traveled from Paris to try traditional German cuisine. Unfortunately, our experience was ruined by the rude behavior of one waitress. She aggressively told us not to place our takeaway drinks on the table and even threw our personal items to the floor. During ordering, she treated us like we couldn’t understand basic words, using exaggerated gestures like “big, small” as if we were children. I tried to talk to her politely after the meal, but her attitude was still dismissive. As a minority and non-German speaker, I felt discriminated against. Disappointing experience.

The food was good and the atmosphere decent, but the experience was completely ruined by the appalling behavior of an older waiter. I’ve never encountered anything so unprofessional in a restaurant. The waiter slammed the table and said, “I don’t like Chinese guests,” simply because we waved to get his attention. We even apologized for the gesture, but he doubled down with an openly discriminatory and hostile attitude. This wasn’t about manners or rules—this was pure arrogance, hiding behind the pretense of “German etiquette” (emphasized by him). It felt like a display of superiority rooted in outdated and dangerous thinking. It was disturbing, like catching a glimpse of a 1930s mindset that should have no place in modern Germany. If this restaurant has any interest in maintaining basic standards of professionalism and decency, management should seriously consider whether this kind of attitude belongs in their team. Some urgent education in respect and basic human decency is clearly needed.

Good service and good food, we were completely satisfied.

An older male waiter in the store was very rude. We waved to order, and we didn't mean to disrespect him, but he came over and lectured us, saying that the order of the order was his decision. There are many rules in Germany, and he didn't like our waving behavior. OK, Germany has this culture and we respect it, but the attitude of lecturing people is wrong. When checking out we tried to tell him that his attitude earlier made us uncomfortable. He directly said that he didn't like Chinese guests. Since you said it directly, I also have the right to express loudly in the store that I don't like your attitude. This is very rude!

While passing through Frankfurt, we were looking for a restaurant offering German specialties. The dishes are very hearty and appetizing! The warm setting. Slight misunderstanding with the waitress when ordering a bottle of lemonade. The latter must be ordered with cider. I recommend!

The Klaane Sachsenhäuser are a real stroke of luck if you want to experience authentic cuisine in Frankfurt. I was particularly enthusiastic about the food: the green sauce was excellent, the schnitzel was fried to perfection - crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside - and the apple strudel at the end was simply a dream. The service is special, typically Frankfurter in a very charming way - anyone who understands a bit of humor will quickly feel in good hands here. It is precisely this direct, honest manner that makes the visit particularly pleasant. A real highlight is the beer garden: beautifully and quietly located, with a relaxed atmosphere that really comes into its own on warm evenings. All in all: A place that I can recommend to anyone who wants to experience good food, a relaxed atmosphere and a piece of real Frankfurt. I'll definitely be back!

Great service, super delicious!

We've been there several times and have never been disappointed, including last Saturday. Nevertheless, we wanted to try out our neighbor (at home on Affentorplatz), but we fled to Klaanen Sachsenhäuser because of the extremely unfriendly service there. There we were able to choose a table in the sunny garden. As always - friendly and committed service, the food is of the best quality and top Ebbelwoi. The beautiful, sunny garden and also the rustic restaurant were very well attended that day. But despite the hustle and bustle, all the service staff were very quick and friendly and didn't impose any hassle on the guests. Always has a funny line on his lips and is helpful. We had a wonderful afternoon in the sun and will never be "unfaithful" to Sachsenhäuser again. We can actually recommend everything, but especially the Handkäs and the Frankfurter Schnitzel. Large portions at fair prices. We are already looking forward to the next visit and I plan to celebrate my big birthday there. Top recommendation.

Quaint restaurant on Affentorplatz in the backyard At first we didn't want to walk through the courtyard in the "Klaanen Sachsehäuser" in the dark on Rose Monday because it seemed uninviting and empty. The well-filled guest room turned out to be a rustic and cozy, traditional inn. We liked it very much, we were warmly welcomed and looked after. We had a hard time deciding on the extensive menu, but as "tourists" we had to order "Handkäs mit Musik" and a dish with "Frankfurter Grüner Sauce". Don’t forget the medlar at the end. The price-performance ratio was absolutely fine. If it hadn't been our last evening, we would certainly have come back again. This will be done on the next visit to Frankfurt.

We (6 ppl, including visitors from France) visited the beautiful garden on a mild day in February. Although we were very excited to visit the iconic place to try the famous apple wine, our excitement was very quickly turned down. In the restaurant , we were informed that they won’t serve in the yard today in a very rude and condescending way. You could feel the tension between the colleagues in the air. Nonetheless, we were happy to get it ourselves. Just to see a few minutes later, several waiters and waitresses going to smoke. We counted five in total. Finally, as the night falls, the waitress lit up all the candles distributed on the tables to create a nice ambiance in the yard. Eventually, the waitress arrived at our table to pick up the glasses and said something in a very in polite way. We understood between the lines the restaurant was fully booked and this may have put the staff under pressure, however, we disagree with approaching young customers in adequately. It appears that service is not a thing and business rather optional than the purpose of the restaurant. Very embarrassing for us!
