Ammergauer Maxbräu in Oberammergau

Ein sehr gutes Restaurant, etwas teurer als die Restaurants, in denen wir in diesem Dorf gegessen haben, aber das war gerechtfertigt.

Absolut empfehlenswert. Zentral gelegen, schöner Biergarten. Vom selbstgebauten Hellen war ich hin und weg. Und das Essen (geschmorte Ochsenschulter) war geschmacklich und optisch ein Traum. War sicherlich nicht mein letzter Besuch.

Sehr gutes Restaurant mit typischer bayrischer Küche. Mir hat auch das Bier dort sehr gut geschmeckt.

Haben nur etwas im Biergarten getrunken. Bedienung aufmerksam. Leider wurde nebenan lang mit der Motorsäge gearbeitet, sonst hätten wir wahrscheinlich noch was gegessen. Kann jedoch Maxbräu nix dafür

Wiener Schnitzel und hausgebrautes Bier 10/10.

Das Bier muss man mögen, war absolut nicht meins und Schweinebraten gibt es auch besseren.

Uns hats sehr gut gefallen, das Essen ist qualitativ sehr hochwertig und geschmacklich wirklich ein Highlight. Die Pfefferhaxe und auch der Krustenbraten haben uns sehr gut geschmeckt. Der Rostbraten war auch top. Ausserdem gibt's Bier aus der Hausbrauerei. Klare Empfehlung in Oberammergau.

Super Essen, tolles Ambiente und nettes Personal. Punktabzug gibt's für das Bier, welches wie Oettinger gemischt mit Brausetabletten schmeckt. Es bleibt völlig unverständlich, warum ein Bayerisches Wirtshaus nicht in der Lage ist ein normales Helles zu servieren. Schade...

Ich war dort, weil ich im Hotel Maximilian wohnte, und es war das beste deutsche Essen, das ich je gegessen habe. Es war überhaupt nicht salzig, und die Würzung war perfekt. Die Portionen waren großzügig, sodass ich herzhaft essen konnte und pappsatt war. Das Fleisch war zart, und die Spätzle hatten ein kräftiges Käsearoma, das ich persönlich liebe, also hat es mir wirklich sehr gut geschmeckt. Und außerdem…! Das Craft-Bier war auch köstlich. Es hatte einen leichten Duft, also fragte ich nach, und man sagte mir, es sei Maracuja.

Immer wieder ein Genuss! Das Essen ist von wirklich hoher Qualität. Das gebratene Schweinefleisch ist der absolute Hammer! Bitte beachten Sie, dass das Soufflé-Dessert 40 Minuten Zubereitungszeit benötigt.

Wir waren Hotel Maximilian zu Gast und nutzen das im Haus gelegene Ammergauer Maxbräu Restaurant zu Abendessen. Das Bier wird im Gastraum der Restaurants gebraut. Von den Leckeren Speisen bis zum Bier und das sehr zuvorkommende und Aufmerksame Personal stimmt hier alles auf den Punkt. Hier verbrachten wir in Gastlicher Atmosphäre einen schönen Abend. Das Ambiente greift sehr schön die Bayrische Tradition auf und gibt einem als Gast ein sehr angenehmes Gefühl . Wir kommen wieder und das sollte jeder der In der Region unterwegs ist auch machen . Aus unserer Sicht ist es auf jeden Fall ein Besuch wert. Danke 🙏

Ein absolutes Muss bei jedem Besuch in Oberammergau! Das Ammergauer Maxbräu bietet eine perfekte Mischung aus traditioneller Braukunst und moderner Gastlichkeit. Das hausgebraute Bier ist hervorragend – besonders das Kellerbier ist ein Genuss. Auch das Essen hat uns voll überzeugt: klassische bayerische Küche, frisch zubereitet und in großzügigen Portionen serviert. Das Ambiente ist urig-gemütlich. Besonders hervorheben möchte ich den aufmerksamen und flinken Service, selbst wenn es voll ist. Wir haben für 4 Personen reserviert und waren am Ende 10. Alles kein Problem.

Ich war mit 3 Freunden da. Das Essen war sehr lecker, aber auch teuer. Selbst die Käsespätzle gab's für satte 18€ und die Portionen waren durchschnittlich. Geschmacklich aber wirklich Top und auch die Location ist sehr einzigartig und gemütlich. Service war auch Spitze. Kann einen Besuch empfehlen 👍🏼

Gute Brasserie, leckeres und herzhaftes Essen. Wir hatten eine tolle Zeit! Gutes Bier und freundliches Personal…

Ich habe gemischte Gefühle, was diesen Ort angeht. Einerseits ist das Bier ausgezeichnet und die meisten Angestellten sind unglaublich freundlich und professionell. Andererseits hatten wir eine sehr enttäuschende und unehrliche Begegnung mit einer Managerin mittleren Alters (mit Brille). Wir kamen heute um 18:00 Uhr an. Obwohl das Restaurant fast leer war (nur zwei Tische waren besetzt), sagte sie uns, sie seien „ausgebucht“. Wir erklärten ihr, dass wir nur zum Abendessen (maximal 1,5 Stunden) bleiben und den Tisch gegebenenfalls bis 20:00 Uhr freigeben könnten, aber sie beharrte darauf, dass alle Gäste „jederzeit“ eintreffen würden. Als wir fragten, ob wir uns zum Essen an die Bar setzen könnten, behauptete sie, dass dort nur Getränke, nicht aber Speisen serviert würden. Wir gingen, aßen woanders und kamen um 19:30 Uhr auf einen Drink zurück. Ein anderer, viel höflicherer Kellner bot uns sofort einen Tisch an. Wir entschieden uns stattdessen für die Bar und sahen dort andere Gäste, die zufrieden aßen. Es ist inakzeptabel, dass eine Managerin falsche Informationen gibt und Gäste mit solchen Ausreden abweist. Ich habe ihr direkt mündlich Feedback gegeben, wollte dies aber auch hier teilen. Es ist wirklich schade, denn die anderen Kellner waren super und das Bier gehörte zu meinen Favoriten, aber diese Art von Gastfreundschaft – oder besser gesagt, deren Fehlen – seitens einer Managerin ist respektlos.

Das war eines der besten bayerischen Gerichte, die ich seit Langem gegessen habe (und ich wohne in Bayern)! Die Spätzle waren der absolute Höhepunkt. 🤩

Ein wirklich tolles Lokal. Die Mitarbeiter waren mehr als freundlich und das Ambiente gefällt mir sehr gut. Ich hatte den krustenbraten mit Klöße und Rotkohl und es war ein Gedicht. Gerne werde ich hier nochmal essen, klare Empfehlung für alle die was leckeres und gemütliches in der Umgebung suchen.

Top Hardware, Software benötigt ein Update. Eine wirklich tolle Location, mit einem leckeren Bier, welches aber immer unerschwinglicher wird. Als Dienstleister finde ich den Service unaufmerksam und teilweise ignorant, unhöflich. Ich war gerne dort überlege es mir wegen dem Service aber wirklich zweimal, ob ich wiederkomme. Leider ändert sich ja erst etwas, wenn man Rezensionen schreibt und der Chef des Hauses diese dann auch liest.

Wir sind kurzfristig zum Abendessen im Maxbräu eingekehrt. Entschieden haben uns für den fantastischen Kaiserschmarren und die lecker Pfefferhaxe. Wir wurden schnell und freundlich bedient.

The ambiance is rustically Bavarian, but otherwise more touristy and geared toward international guests. The standard menu includes Wiener Schnitzel and roast pork.

On our tour of Bavaria's castles, we arrived in the quaint town known for being a year-round symbol of Christmas thanks to its countless Christmas shops. We stopped at this restaurant. Even though it was 5:30 PM, we were fortunate to find dinner was being served. Besides, other families were already eating, so we felt less embarrassed about asking for dinner. With two children already raring to go, it was perfect. The welcome was wonderful; they immediately brought us two placemats for them to draw on, and served us delicious food. The pork shank and roast pork with crispy rind were definitely worth trying. The sauerkraut and braised cabbage were also excellent. Bravo!

I don't need to go there anymore. We had dinner together. My wife's meal arrived 15 minutes after mine, and I was almost finished eating. My meal was only lukewarm and rather bland in flavor. The best things were the pale ale and the side salad. What I also noticed was that newly arrived guests stood in the entrance area for quite a long time, waiting to be assigned a table, even though wait staff were constantly passing by and practically ignoring the guests.

We wanted to celebrate a family member's birthday this evening and, based on our positive experiences in recent years, reserved a table at the restaurant. A table for three adults and a small child was reserved over the phone. Upon arrival, the third place setting and a chair for the child were missing, despite having been communicated over the phone. When the menus were distributed, no one asked if drinks were ready. At that point, barely five tables were occupied, giving the staff plenty of time to attend to the guests. As for the drinks, we ordered three aperitifs and a drink for the child. The aperitif arrived promptly, while the three cellar beers took a little longer. The beer arrived almost at the same time as the appetizer. An hour passed between the appetizer and the main course because the service and kitchen were apparently overwhelmed by a tour group of around 25 people that had arrived in the meantime. And since the group had obviously already agreed on a menu, we couldn't understand the delay. When the main course was served, we immediately asked for Kaiserschmarrn for dessert, as it requires a lead time of 35 minutes. This is indicated on the menu. The main course arrived at around 7:15 p.m. The food was satisfactory apart from the dark brown underside of the schnitzel, which had obviously been sitting in the butter for too long and cost a whopping €32. By 8:00 p.m., unfortunately, there was no sign of Kaiserschmarrn, although plates had already been brought. Shortly afterwards, we were informed that the receipt had not reached the kitchen due to a technical error and that dessert could now be reordered if desired. We did not want that, as we had already had to wait an hour for easily prepared dishes such as cheese spaetzle, roast pork with dumplings, and fries with fish fingers!!! and now, after another half hour, we had to wait another 30-45 minutes. Whether this was really due to a technical error or staff failure is unclear. The service staff seemed overwhelmed by the tour group, even though there were four of them and a good portion of the tables were empty. This is probably why the waitress assigned to us didn't get a chance to check if everything was okay after receiving our main course, leaving it to another lady to handle. It seemed as if our table had fallen behind, even though the waitress was cashing or serving at neighboring tables. It was also interesting to note that other tables received their food faster despite having an appetizer, and it took two people to re-set each table. During the hour-long wait for dessert, no one noticed the empty glasses, let alone asked if we wanted anything else to drink. Only by actively approaching the waitress were we able to get a cup of coffee. The waitress apologized several times for the lack of dessert, but unfortunately, there was no sign of genuine regret. Compensation could have been offered, for example, a liqueur or espresso on the house, but in our case, the bill was charged as usual. It's truly incomprehensible how anyone could let themselves get so out of step and not pay attention to their guests. Since we only travel to Oberammergau twice a year, and usually eat at Max Bräu once or twice, this experience was extremely regrettable. The level of service offered today is unfamiliar to us from previous years. It's understandable that after the summer season, things tend to get a bit flat in the fall/winter, but tonight the excellent service we've come to expect was lacking. Even the lovely ambiance and delicious beer were of no avail.

We wanted to have lunch at your restaurant today. According to the website, the restaurant should be open. Unfortunately, we found the door closed. Why isn't your website updated?

We loved the light batter on the tender schnitzel, the salad, and alcohol-free beer. We also attended a work function and the service was spectacular, as was the most impressive Kaiserschmarn I’ve ever seen. It took six of us to finish this custard-filled pan of dessert.

The landschweine and house beer were fantastic, favorite place to eat in Oberammergau

One of the best, if not the best, traditional restaurant in Oberammergau. The atmosphere is traditional but very refined.

It couldn't be more unfriendly. We were there at a quarter to ten on August 24th (Ludwigsfeuer), and they didn't want to serve us anymore; they told us they were already clearing up. The door says open until 11 p.m. On an evening when the whole village is full of tourists, you have to expect that someone might come by an hour before closing time and want a drink. 🙂

Food was excellent, the beer, which is brewed on site, was even better.

A perfect evening. The food, roast pork and knuckle of pork, was incredibly delicious, and the waitress was very friendly and attentive. Despite the hustle and bustle, she always had a smile on her face. The ambiance was also more than inviting.

It wouldn’t be our first choice as there are better rated restaurants but the food was great, waiter very polite and specious beer garden. Mniam mniam 🤤 plate of my husband wasn’t catched on pic as eaten quickly.

I walked in to ask for a table and was kindly helped. I said I wanted to sit outside and was told I could choose one. I then sat there for over 30 minutes without any help. The waiter looked me in the eye several times but refused to help. People around me who arrived later had already ordered food and finished their first drinks. The waiter didn't look surprised when I left after 40 minutes.

Crispy pork was basically without skin and not crispy at all. Half of the beer options were not actually available. Food is too expensive for the small portion sizes.

The beer is still very, very good, but at €5.40, it's on the higher end! The sausage salad used to be very, very good (homemade), but unfortunately, it's now gone! It's not worthy of the once-excellent food! I wouldn't order it again!

Definitely a NO recommendation. Unfortunately, the experience was very strange. The service tried hard, but they were unable to convince the kitchen to bring us a main course within 1.5 hours of the salad (a green salad with dressing is considered a complicated appetizer here). The restaurant management works in the kitchen. So, criticism only results in reprimands. A manager who doesn't realize how many potential guests are turned away because the kitchen is overwhelmed is simply incapable of taking criticism.

A terrace that calls itself a beer garden but at 6 p.m. has no tables available for reservations.... impossible to sit down just to enjoy a beer. Useless....

Nice ambiance, but service and value for money aren't quite up to scratch. We live in the village and return to the Maximilian every 8-9 months, hoping it's improved. Unfortunately, we were disappointed again this time. The ambiance is still really nice and appealing. We were greeted warmly by two or three employees upon entering, but then we stood around a bit lost for what felt like two minutes before we were seated. The wine (0.2l for €9.60) is quite expensive, but at those prices, you'd expect the waiters to know the wines and be able to pronounce them correctly – Blanc de Noir became "Blank de Nöhr." Conclusion: We'd like to like the Maximilian – but, in our opinion, the value for money and the service don't match up... what a shame

We arrived having made a reservation, they placed us in the back room where they serve the hotel breakfast. Service was slow, we all ate at different times, the last main course was served after the first was finished. To add insult to injury they charged €2.90 per glass for tap water, we did not realise until we had ordered 4! Avoid this place, very disappointing

Completely satisfied. Prices are high, but the beer and food are worth it. Restrooms are clean, and the ambiance is rustic and cozy.

Great restaurant. The quality of the food is very good. The high price is justified.

The pork knuckle is exceptional, as are the other dishes and the beers. The atmosphere is well-kept; eating outside is definitely worth it if you can (inside, you risk suffering a bit from the heat). The service is the only downside: I had a super-efficient waiter, who made me forget the terrible impression I had from a girl who kept me waiting more than 20 minutes for a table. Let him serve you and you'll get 5-star service.

We had dinner in the beer garden. The prices for the food are a bit higher than at other restaurants nearby, but you can feel and taste the difference in quality. The cellar beer is also recommended.

Extremely unfriendly. The ATM in the restaurant wasn't working. It happens. You could use your card 400 meters away in the pouring rain. However, one of the two of us (a couple over 40) had to stay behind. The worst part was that the owner told us the friendly waitress would have to pay if we didn't... Insane treatment. The food was okay, but quite expensive. A schnitzel without any extras costs 34 euros. In short, not recommended. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful, by the way; she's not to blame. The owner should be ashamed to admit she would have to pay if we didn't!

A good place for Bavarian cuisine. We eat here almost every year, and the souffléd Kaiserschmarrn is always a must. It tastes a little different every year, but it's always good. We love coming here; the home-brewed beer is very good, and so is the food.

Abbiano cercato questo posto per una cena tipica e fidandoci delle recensioni. Alle 19,30 chiediamo un tavolo per la cena ma ci viene risposto di tornare dopo le 21 perché al momento stavano servendo i clienti dell'hotel, nonostante il locale avesse tavoli liberi. Decidiamo di fare una passeggiata e di attendere in accordo con il cameriere le ore 21. Ma al nostro ritorno,all'orario prestabilito, ci viene risposto che la cucina era ormai chiusa mettendoci così in difficoltà visto il tardo orario per mangiare in altri locali, la nostra fortuna è stata trovare un buon cameriere molto cordiale ( probabilmente vedendo che eravamo con due bambini) in un altro ristorante del centro che ci ha permesso di consumare una cena fredda con tagliere di salumi e formaggi. Cena tipica saltata per colpa della assoluta mancanza di professionalità e di cortesia!!! Unico neo trovato nella splendida Oberammergau 😔

We made a reservation for 8 p.m. yesterday and were looking forward to a lovely evening. Unfortunately, our anticipation was spoiled by an exceptionally long wait for the food. We waited a full 1:45 hours for the main course. The food arrived shortly before 10 p.m.! We were the last to leave the restaurant. It's a real shame 😔. The dishes we chose were excellent and lifted our spirits a bit, but we're still giving it a 3-star rating.

The food was delicious, except for the fries. Service was very friendly and attentive, although a bit busy due to absences. The restaurant was still very good, and we'll go back.

Exceptionally friendly service! Our waiter was so quick and efficient that we often had our wishes read from his eyes. Very child-friendly. There's a children's menu and something for every child to draw. The food was delicious, with a very good selection! I particularly like the seasonal menu. I really enjoyed the asparagus dishes! And the Kaiserschmarrn is truly unbelievably delicious...just way too rich – and we were eating for two! By the way, the restaurant is as beautifully and quaintly decorated as it is. Thank you for the great visit. We will definitely be back :)

Very nice restaurant. A very cozy atmosphere, very friendly service, and the homemade beer is also very tasty. We had the Wiener Schnitzel, which was incredibly good. Overall, highly recommended; we'd be happy to come back.

Try schnitzel from milk veal. Much better than the Filgmuller. No need to say anything about beers.

Tldr: always worth a visit! A beautifully decorated restaurant with mainly traditional southern German cuisine that completely won over even my picky customer! The service is at least as good as the food: attentive, friendly, flexible, and quite fast, even when it gets a bit busy. Regarding the negative comments (the rating) regarding reservations: apparently, they have no experience with restaurants and similar establishments that require table reservations. Of course, you'll be (politely) turned away if a table is reserved but the reservation hasn't arrived yet. Or how would you feel if you had a reservation for 6:00 p.m. and someone took your seat at 5:50 p.m. without a reservation? So, let's go!

I was here two years ago and definitely wanted to go back, just for the good beer! The restaurant is really nice and has both a quaint interior and a lovely beer garden - however, the latter is located on the street, so it can be a bit noisy at times (hence one star deducted, but it's hardly worth mentioning). This year's visit included the pepper knuckle and wild garlic risotto... Both incredibly delicious and high-quality! The prices are perfectly reasonable. The service was friendly but unfortunately a bit overwhelmed - the beer garden was also very busy... We had to wait a bit in some places, but that was completely acceptable 😄 For dessert, we had Kaiserschmarrn - I highly recommend it! Totally fluffy and delicately sweet... It comes with vanilla ice cream, cranberries, and apple compote. Brilliant! Update June 2024 We were guests at the Ammergauer Maxbräu again and received very friendly and courteous service. It was relatively quiet (Monday evening), so we got all the attention 😄 We had the pork roast and tarte flambée. And to finish, the amazing Kaiserschmarrn... It was by far the best I've ever eaten. A huge compliment to the chef ♥️ I'll be back for dinner soon! Update June 2025 And once again, we were drawn to Maxbräu – always a treat! Today we had Wiener Schnitzel and ox shoulder. It was excellent, although not cheap 😉 I'll be back here again in the future!

After years I ate here again. I had a delicious schnitzel, a great salad and for dessert I had apple strudel with egg. Too few staff. Friendliness could be better.

Absolutely amazing and atmospheric place. Even though it was a beautiful summer evening, I chose to sit inside. The service was extremely uncomplicated, I was asked several times if everything was okay, but not too intrusive. The PulledPorkBurger was definitely one of the best I've ever eaten. The sweet potato fries were also very good. Along with the food, I enjoyed two seasonal beers, so in the summer I naturally had unfiltered wheat beer. Products from the restaurant's own brewery, really good. Even though there were quite a lot of customers, I didn't have to wait too long for the food, and the portion came in a timely manner. As a detail, it should be mentioned that the portion was served on a wooden board, stylish 👍 The other portions that I saw the waiters carrying also seemed very good. I highly recommend this place 💪

We visited this restaurant about a month ago. The waitress who served us left a bad impression. She was rude even before we sat down, and when we tried to order, she kept answering in English, even though we spoke to her in German and she obviously understood us. The food was okay, but nothing special, and the bill was also incorrect, although we didn't realize this until after we left the restaurant.

We enjoyed a variety of traditional German/Bavarian meals. For me, the crusty pork went well with the red cabbage. The potato dumplings were not to my taste. Friendly service in English.

Unfortunately we had to wait 1 hour and 30 minutes for our food. The food was ok, but not particularly impressive in terms of taste - rather average. Important to know: Without a reservation you hardly have a chance of getting a place. Even though there were free tables, several guests were turned away because they hadn't made reservations.

This restaurant has craft beers on tap for the price of normal beers. A stop is mandatory for beer lovers.
