Alter Simpl in München

Unfortunately disappointing. Nice old place. Schnitzel with fried potatoes. Fried potatoes lukewarm or rather steamed potatoes that have passed the pan onto the plate. Show the cook what fried potatoes are and why plates where the schnitzel is on the side dish are far too small. Service overwhelmed.

Unfortunately we had to wait a long time before our order was even taken. During this time we heard customers at the next table complaining about the cold fried potatoes and the burnt schnitzel. Our choice also fell on this meal and when it finally came (after we had to politely point out one of the forgotten drinks three times), it was disappointing for us too. Fried potatoes old and warmed up, some burnt and others raw inside. The schnitzel had definitely been fried in old fat. The meat quality was a disaster and onion roast didn't have a single fried onion. Paying €55 for this and two drinks is simply not appropriate in these times and is a shame. We won't come back again.

The Alte Simpl was a favorite place for me before the tenant changed: great atmosphere, super-friendly service, delicious food. Today I tried it out again to see if it was suitable for a Christmas party. I didn't like the food (fried chicken salad with potato salad and chicken schnitzel in cream sauce with spaetzle) except for the fried chicken. It really took a lot of effort for me to eat it and I didn't even feel like eating a scoop in my favorite ice cream shop afterwards, which is rare. It's a shame, because I would have liked to have the Christmas party on Türkenstrasse again. I would still go for a beer, but the food disappointed me.

Only had drinks and therefore can't rate the food. The rest was great. I really like it when the conditions quickly register that you've finished drinking and then immediately ask if you want a new drink.

The location is great, and the service is really nice. The food is delicious, with large portions at great prices. They’re definitely busy! We were lucky enough to get a table when we arrived, but later on, we noticed it was packed, so I would recommend making a reservation. Overall, it’s a great spot to enjoy tasty food at a good price.

Cool modern restaurant in brewery style with a cute outdoor area! The prices are absolutely fine for Munich standards and the food was very tasty :)

It's a shame what this place has become. I've spent many great evenings here, but since the change of ownership the menu is completely different, the prices are higher and the atmosphere has been completely lost. The service was also very slow. It's really a shame what has become of the old Simpl. It has simply become another interchangeable Munich restaurant. From favorite pub to never again...

Great location for eating and meeting. Very comfortable and clean, it was a bit noisy at times because the bar was very busy. Highly recommended, prices are reasonable for the quality!

Such a great place! We were very pleasantly surprised by the great atmosphere, the extremely courteous service, the quality of the food and the moderate prices. A traditional restaurant is rising to new heights! We'll be back soon and often! Here Munich shines again ;)

The food was really bad, I had the worst roast pork I had ever eaten, and the sauce was also subpar. The whole thing for over €20, I can't recommend the restaurant.

We were out having few drinks and ended up here. Athmosphere was nice and we had first class service. Too bad they close so early.

Rustic original. Inexpensive for Munich standards and large portions. The food is down-to-earth, delicious and the service is top. Sometimes it takes a while if it's very busy. But never harm the cause. Love it there

Quite a popular establishment in online reviews of inexpensive local restaurants. Usually reviews write about affordable prices, but here I have to disagree. Prices correspond to prices in establishments located in the very center of Munich. Therefore, there are no very cheap or very expensive dishes here. The establishment itself is furnished quite nicely with a summer veranda. In the afternoon, on Sunday, there were almost no people. We were able to grab a table of our choice. The service is good, the staff is polite and helpful. We took meat cutlets with potato and cucumber salad. The portion is large, everything is very tasty. The food is home cooked. The wait time for food was average.

We were there for lunch with our child at the weekend. Very nice service and super delicious food. The pumpkin with buffalo mozzarella was great and the little one was thrilled with the children's schnitzel. The large selection of vegetarian dishes is particularly commendable. You can also eat Bavarian food here as a vegetarian 👍

A favorite for years! Good Bavarian food and a very good beer selection with Guinness and Kilkenny. Edit: I've been here a few times since the change of ownership and I'm very happy that the "new" Alte Simpl is still a great restaurant - even much better in terms of veggie options!

The NEW Alte Simpel - after reopening in April 2024 with a new tenant and new concept - offers a good standard menu with vegetarian/vegan alternatives and a Simpel plate that changes daily and is affordable for around €8.50. Sometimes they are a little simpler, sometimes they are very elaborate, like today the wild mushroom with fried chichore in a honey-mango dressing with basmati rice was excellent. Personally, I like the concept.

Despite the great heat and numerous guests, we felt comfortable.

Very nice pub in the heart of Maxvorstadt. The beer tastes good and is usually poured well. There are the “typical” dishes that you would expect in a pub these days, such as burgers, currywurst, fries, but also a lot more. Personally, I really like the atmosphere. Even though the pub is bigger, it still seems a little cozy. The staff is generally very friendly.

Went here twice, had Schnitzel twice because it is just so good. Waiters are super-nice as well.

I celebrated my birthday with 15 people at the Altes Simpl and was thrilled by the great service and the great food!

Ottimo locale with good time. Birra super comes to Monaco and delicious dishes. / Good restaurant and with good prices. The beer is great, as always in Munich, and delicious food.

Yesterday we were with 6 people in the “new” old Simpl and were welcomed by very warm staff and served very attentively and personably for over 2 hours. A big thank you to Kevin and his colleagues! From the fresh Obatzn, the tomato bread as a starter, the legendary ham noodles, to a super tasty roast pork, to a creative pretzel carpaccio, everyone was thrilled by the very good cuisine. We had a great table outside in the middle of Schwabing's nightlife and inside, the new mix between historical flair and new and very clean toilets was extremely successful. Two other highlights: I'm not a Löwenbräu fan, but fresh from the barrel it's a good light beer and the cellar beer from Franziskaner was also very tasty. The schnapps, both the fruit schnapps and the hazelnut schnapps, were super mild and even those who didn't like schnapps enjoyed it. All in all a lovely evening! A new highlight in the Munich gastronomic scene!

The newly opened Alte Simpl hasn't changed that much, the Maxvorstadt institution Axel is still behind the counter and the feared pink turned out to be a solid old pink. And Ringelnatz's rhyme remains unchanged (for me): "And I'm drawn by ghostly hands whether I want to or not, I have to go to the Simplicissimus after the walls decorated with pictures." Addendum on July 23rd: Great that the Alte Simpl is becoming a place for culture and art again!

Old wine in new bottles... Old Simpl in a new guise? Wasn't convinced. Price level for a student pub is high. Currywurst tasty, but not outstanding. Service friendly and fond of children. Positively surprised because there was even more than 1 vegan dish available. Staff very friendly. Location good.

Unfortunately the kitchen is underground. Even under new owners. Given a chance again and again since it reopened, disappointed every time. Good atmosphere for drinking, nothing more.

Top pub in Munich. Beer, food and service are very good.

The meat from the onion roast (24.80) was tough, had too much sinew and was well cooked, even though it was ordered medium rare. The beer (Helles, 4.70) was too warm. Service was nice, but hardly there. All in all it wasn't a hit

We were 8 people and the service got lost and the charge us drinks for other tables. We paid them to not cause any issues but I won't come back nor recommend this place.

Was here with my brother. We were both hungover, but we were able to muster up the strength to leave the inn we had gone to after we had been ignored there - despite being overstaffed behind the counter. But here the service was keen to take care of the physical well-being of its guests. After we drank our first Helles, the friendly man asked us: Would you like to drink another Helles? We were unsure. We could afford to drink another light beer. The handsome man saw our doubts and added: One more beer; for calming. It's rare in life that you feel as good about buying a good or service as my brother and I did at this moment. We were inspired. We sat at the back of the restaurant feeling inspired, the light was soft, the glasses were stacked, the flowers were fresh, and there were other happy people wallowing around us, whose physical well-being was, quite noticeably, very well taken care of. Familys. Friends playing cards. Sole readers with red wine. We left Old Simpl with a softness and newfound capacity for hope and, with it, kindness. The wonderful man was just standing outside having a smoke. Quite unobtrusively and without a super-cool habitus, but just in a cute way, he told us: Come back guys, we have more of this. He meant beer.

The Old Simpl got exactly the fresh new coat of paint it needed. The new facility is bold and extremely successful, and the prices are still reasonable for Munich standards. The juicy roast pork, the fluffy spaetzle, the huge schnitzel and the onion roast roast, we enjoyed everything. The service was super friendly 👍

Newly opened, therefore with reservations. It is clear that not everything is going smoothly so soon after the reopening. The two very young waitresses were always attentive and friendly, there was only a problem with the process (e.g. wrong drinks, salad with the main course came 20 minutes after the main course). However, I was disappointed with the food. Both in terms of what was on offer (there wasn't much to be seen of the announced combination of classic and modern). Schnitzel was then at best okay. Very greasy, so there was a lot of liquid fat on the plate, which wasn't particularly good for the fries either. As I said shortly after unlocking, not everything is going smoothly, I hope it gets better!

Had a great evening yesterday at the pub quiz in the old Simpl. It was really a lot of fun. Fast and courteous service, good food. We will be back!

I was there on a Saturday evening, Service attentive and very helpful in all matters. Drinks came quickly and were tasty. About the food... The schnitzel was prepared with almost no fat and was completely flat and dry. The fried potatoes were okay All in all okay for the drinks but I wouldn't come back for the food. Resume I cannot recommend the restaurant...

Were there for the pub quiz after reopening. Unfortunately, operation was a total failure. It takes forever until you can order and then almost as long until the order comes, a food order was also completely forgotten. Guys, this has to get better! Beer price a little above the university district average. More than three stars are initially not possible.

I was looking forward to the reopening and then I was served a cold pork roast from the drawer. It was then warmed up again for me. Waitress was nice though.

I'm really happy that they're open again! Very friendly service, delicious food, the vegan Leberkäs was also convincing, great experience.

We became aware of this restaurant through the Süddeutsche. It was an imposition. The beer my friend ordered was too warm and tasted stale, maybe they threw leftovers together. We had to wait forever for the food, the meat tasted dry and old. The salad was also rotten. The understaffed service ignored our problems. We couldn't enjoy the evening, on the contrary. Then we left the food and went to the Atzinger opposite. The food there was excellent (the boss is a chef there). But we will definitely NOT go back here!

I was really happy that the old Simpl opened again. The food is great, the Kaiserschmarrn is a dream and the new ambience is cozy. Even though it was packed and the team was probably still getting used to it, everyone was super nice and tried hard.

Maybe it's because they just reopened, but the processes weren't right. As expected, it was packed and the service staff tried very hard, but there were apparently problems with the cash register… Ultimately our drinks arrived, even though we ordered them together, sometimes quite far apart, and each of us had to eat alone...😢 The food was solid pub fare, value for money completely ok. My special request for a drink was also no problem. Conclusion: once everything has worked out, great economy with some pub flair and historical roots

I’ve been here few times before they reopened it and I never had this kind of messy service. We had to wait more than 10min to get a table despite of the reservation and then for the food more than 1h30… The food itself was okay but many of the menu were sold out already at 8pm.. Very disappointed, I’d never come back.

It's a shame it could have been a promising new start. Unfortunately the whole team is overwhelmed. A service person who doesn't even know the basics of the drinks menu. A bar waiter who needs half an hour for three beers... The food is even worse, on the menu there is normal pub food, schnitzel, roast pork, burgers, salad with goat cheese. As standard dishes that taste good with a little love. Ok, I can't say anything about the roast pork, it was out. Then there was the burger and it was so bland, no sauce, no special toppings, every fast food joint can do it better. You have more than two hours for this!!! waited for it. Well, you can do it. Service took a really long time despite there being fewer guests. We had to wait an hour for the food in the afternoon. But quality is okay. Despite reservations, the group was cashed out due to pressure from the waitress. The table is probably still reserved. But no guests came. Overall, not really any better under new management. Service and guest orientation can be improved.

Great all around! You can already tell that the Alte Simpl is popular after it reopened, all the tables were reserved in the evening, but they still tried to find a place for us, which worked. You couldn't have distinguished the Viennese style schnitzel from a veal schnitzel, it was so delicious and tender, so we were very enthusiastic about the cuisine and at least as much about the friendly, relaxed and attentive atmosphere. Word seems to have gotten around very quickly, or the other guests probably saw it that way too, the shop was packed. Nevertheless, the service was quick and attentive.

Unfortunately, the quality of the food hasn't changed much in the past, it's not super bad, but not really super good either, especially when you take the prices into account. The boss seemed unsympathetic, as a thank you you get shouted at when you make a miscalculation and the bill isn't correct...

Munich institution! Just good, I love it!

I had been in this place a couple of times before, and came back because they had a pretty good meatloaf. The service, albeit friendly, was always considerably slow, even with little costumers. Sadly, they don’t have the meatloaf on their menu anymore, and I noticed a few other items missing. The only other dish I felt in the mood for was the cheeseburger, and when I ordered, they told me they didn’t have it… They could have mentioned it when they brought the menu. I just had the Radler I had already ordered and served. Not coming back, sadly.

Me and my wife were looking for a typical pub and we found this one on Google. This pub was a fantastic surprise for many reasons: the atmosphere, the style, the food, the staff and many more. At last but not least this is not a typical pub for tourists and this is the best for feeling the authentic German mood.

I was there for the opening on Saturday, it was a hit. Good atmosphere, great live music, good snacks, lots of cool drinks and a really beautifully renovated shop that hasn't lost its original character. I'm looking forward to many great evenings in the Scharnigarten and the restaurant, and yes, I'll come to bingo too 😜

A true institution in Munich that everyone must visit at least once.

Nachmittags bei herrlichstem Wetter - schön draussen sitzen kann man dort ja. Mein Spargelsalat war äußerst lieblos - grüner Salat mit grünen Spargelstückchen, total einfallslos angerichtet und kleine Portion Wurstsalat war auch absolut nicht erwähnenswert. Ein Bier war warm und das Brot vor Stunden abgeschnitten, total ausgetrocknet. Für das alles ist es ein teurer Spaß. Die zwei Punkte verdient die Bedienung, sehr aufmerksam. Sie hat von sich aus nachgefragt, ob alles ok ist und hat dann sauch sofort 2 frische Brotscheiben gebracht. Die Armen können ja auch nichts dafür, wenn die Küche zu wünschen übrig lässt …

Quaint, cozy, delicious! You just enjoy coming here. We have been here several times and will definitely come again. You can enjoy the evening here in the middle of a lively district.

Es war einmal! Die grünen Stammgäste haben keine ausreichenden Umsätze gemacht. (München ist Bunt) hat Dicht gemacht.

Cold in the room, bad air after burnt oil, cold seating options, there were no seat cushions, uncomfortable, unfortunately...

The service is good, but unfortunately the food was a total failure on our last visit. I don't know if the chef was sick or why it was so much worse this time - but I hope it was a blip.

That was really the worst roast pork I've eaten today. Completely dry, no sauce, soggy crust, lukewarm dumpling. Only the red cabbage was fine. The latter cannot be said about the service. In short: For my part, I will prefer the local alternatives for the near future. Too bad old Simpl🙁

Food: Tried Schnitzel "Wiener Art" vom Schwein mit Pommes Frites und kleinem Beilagensalat which is Pork Schnitzel with fries and salad...this the best dish we had their... Recommended Second one was 'Schweinebraten mit Kartoffelknödel, Blaukraut und Dunkelbiersauce' which is roast pork in beer sauce with red cabbage and potato dumpling... Sides of the meet was too heard to eat... Middle portion was good... You can give it a try Beer: Try Kellerbier which they serve in ceramic glasses. It's dark in colour but not bitter with 5.2% alcohol. Service: Upto the mark... Waitress could speak English. And she didn't mind to click our pic. Atmosphere: it's a good place to catch-up with friends. Music is not loud hence you make conversation.

Ich möchte mich für den sehr aufmerksamen und superfreundlichen Service bedanken. Das wird unser neues Stammlokal für unsere Malgruppe. Wir waren begeistert, denn obwohl das Lokal total voll war, hat uns die Bedienung schnell und sehr nett bedient. So etwas trifft man selten. Das einzige, was uns nicht geschmeckt hat, waren Brot und Brezel. Vielleicht einen anderen Bäcker nehmen.

Urige bayrische Gaststätte, in welcher oftmals Geschichte geschrieben wurde, mit sehr gutem Essen und gmiatlicher Atmosphäre.

Der Kellner Basti war sehr sehr freundlich, das Essen kam schnell und die Getränke noch flotter, seine Sprüche haben ein super Bayerisches Wirtshausfeeling generiert, komme gerne und immer wieder!!

Translates to “ The Old Simpleton Cozy, historic Munich pub est. 1903, used to be a meeting place for writers and political activists- you can really feel the vibe as soon as you step inside. Old photos of some of its patrons hanging on the walls. Has a kitchen as well.

Food was good, however me and my friend got our food 1h after the others who ordered at the same time. In total I waited for 1,5 h, didn't even get an excuse. While I was waiting I asked another waiter what happened to my order, I was rejected. I wouldn't recommend, elsewhere you can get good food with a pleasant service.

My friends and I ordered burgers. The burgers were okay, it wasn't "restaurant" level by any means. The burger buns quality was comparable to the store bought "Aldi" ones. Atmosphere was okay, service was nice 👍

One of the most vfm places that ee found in Munich with German food. Granted, we circulated mostly in the touristic Centre so the choices may be poorer. Anyway, in alter Simpl we found nice food with decent price, nice beer and good service. I didn't like the pre-fried fries, but this was rather the norm in most places (only applies to fries). Music and decoration are also a plus.

The food and the beer are ok. The service was also ok. Everything was as you would expect near an University.

Essen aus unserer Sicht nicht akzeptabel. Salat lieblos - Dressing schwach - drei kleine Scheiben Baguette - nicht mal Mittelmaß. Münchner Schnitzel ein Schatten seiner selbst. Nicht paniert - komische Sauce. Lediglich die Schinkennudeln waren okay. Nur 1 von 6 essen okay - völlig unverständlich. Gastraum nicht mal halb voll aber um 19:00 waren die Bierkrüge aus - es wurde empfohlen, die gebrauchten zu behalten. Service bemüht - aber nicht aufmerksam. Essen kamen im Abstand von 15 Minuten an den Tisch.

Essen leider gar nix. Münchner Schnitzel mit Soße, ohne Panade, ein paar unmotivierte Bratkartoffeln.

Accompanied by a pregnant lady we had a wonderful evening at this etablissement. The food - heavenly, the service - flawless. Unfortunately, card payment was not possible but lucky for us, our friend had just sold his PC for 550€ on ebay and carried lots of cash on him.
