Unkai is like Oishi, except the sushi selection and the beautifully prepared dishes are better. Some orders took a long time to arrive, even though the restaurant wasn't full. The cleanliness of the floors and restrooms were also poor. The quality of the small plates, however, was very, very good. One star deducted because the dessert selection is very limited—four flavors of ice cream!

Unfortunately, the meat dishes are far too heavily seasoned. The first few portions taste good, but later on, the flavor changes significantly, and the meat is of inferior quality. Please eliminate the garlic meat sauce—we want to eat meat, not just taste garlic and spices. Don't mask the flavor of your meat with heavy sauces.

I had two hot main courses and two starters delivered to my home from Unkai. The food arrived over half an hour late and cold. Part of my order was missing. The vegetable curry was very spicy, even though it wasn't labeled as spicy, and unfortunately, it didn't taste of anything other than the spice. The chicken teriyaki was good. I can't comment on the ambiance, as I only ordered food. I won't be ordering there again, so unfortunately, only one star.

We received a friendly welcome, and the service was solid overall – those are the positives right from the start. But let's get to the point: There were five of us, and the seat at the front of the table was about as comfortable as a folding chair at Oktoberfest. First waitress? Friendly, but categorically against changing tables. Second waitress? Copy-paste of the "no." And then the boss: head-shaking deluxe – no words. Service "no culture" at its finest. The mood was rock bottom, the tip stayed in the wallet. The meal started better… well, for two of us. Two plates arrived, three guests were left empty-handed. The timing was like an orchestra rehearsal gone wrong. Later, things went more smoothly, and what ended up on the table tasted absolutely top-notch. Nothing to complain about – the sushi is great. Atmosphere? Very modern, pleasant, designed to make you feel good. The value for money is also good: all you can eat plus two drinks for around €45 – there's not much to complain about. In conclusion: If you want good sushi, you'll get it here. But if you sit at the head of the table, you'll need strong nerves and perhaps a titanium seat cushion. Service? Between polite and "no means no." In the end, you're left with a delicious meal, but you paid with gut feeling instead of a tip.

Unfortunately, the quality of the restaurant has declined in recent months. We used to get very good sushi there. Unfortunately, these days, you often get warm sushi or, in some cases, poorly presented food. The staff often seems overwhelmed. The atmosphere in the restaurant is unfortunately very loud and therefore very chaotic.

It's gotten really bad... service is almost nonexistent, food isn't delivered, many dishes aren't available, no wasabi, and it costs 33.90... it's ridiculous. We won't be coming here again!

Many dishes were removed from the menu: sashimi was dry and not freshly cut, teriyaki chicken was very salty, edamame was cold and unevenly salted. Soy sauce, wasabi, and ginger were only served upon request, and some were dry; the soy sauce bottle was sticky. "Dragon Fire" – Interestingly presented, but the sushi was drenched in sauce, the flavor of the ingredients barely discernible. Unfortunately, the service seemed very poorly coordinated; everything was served at once on a table that was too small, a hot teapot was passed over the divider and across the table, and an open trash can was visible behind the counter. In response to criticism, the only response was "too bad" and the full price was charged.

The food was delicious. Highly recommended. It was a bit loud, but that's probably unavoidable given the size of the tables.

What can I say? GREAT place! The main waitress who greeted us was friendly. She even offered us a free T-bone steak. The food itself was of high quality, in my opinion. The ambiance was very nice. There's really nothing more to say, a great place with friendly staff and delicious food, albeit at a slightly higher price. Otherwise, really good!

Personalized service overwhelmed us. Orders didn't arrive. We waited over 30 minutes for round 1. And we were still over an hour into round 3. And nothing even arrived. We were hungry and disappointed. We left with an expensive bill.

Good in itself, but sometimes after an hour a dish comes twice what you already had at the beginning. The order is sometimes a bit confused.

I ate there for the first time yesterday and enjoyed the all-you-can-eat option. Super delicious, beautifully presented dishes that can be ordered via laptop. You can try everything and try everything. It was amazing what they offer for such a very reasonable price (32.90). Steamed, grilled, raw, nothing is left to be desired. 👍 The only drawback and a little food for thought is that the dessert menu only offers ice cream. That's a shame if, like me, you don't like ice cream; that could be improved. Everything else is top-notch. 👍👍👍 The atmosphere is cozy, the dishes and presentation are appetizing and beautiful, the service is very friendly, courteous, and incredibly fast. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The guests are of a mixed age group; you feel at home. Apparently, the concept was being refined somewhat. Larger sushi orders were served on beautifully decorated platters with steaming dry ice as an eye-catcher during the all-you-can-eat menu. Each plate was explained what it was. We were there very early this time (5 p.m.) and sat on the terrace. The noise level isn't as great there.

We weren't there for the food, but mainly for the drinks, and then we tried a dessert. I had the matcha ice cream, which was very interesting but definitely tasty. The only criticism is that you had to wait quite a long time before you could even order, and the menu was pretty tattered, with many items crossed out.

Very large selection, excellent service, but unfortunately very loud when fully booked. (A large room.) Excellent value for money for us. With drinks, all-you-can-eat was around €50 per person.

The all-you-can-eat menu was okay, but some dishes weren't delivered or were delivered with a significant delay. The price/performance ratio was okay, but the pictures when ordering didn't really match the food delivered. However, the quality was very good, and there was a fairly large selection.

We had the all-you-can-eat buffet, where you order with a tray. The system is easy to use and works very well. The food came quickly and was delicious. Unfortunately, at least two items were missing from our order every time we ordered. When we asked why, they said "sold out today," but the tables next to us had exactly what we ordered. The food and location were good, but the service still has room for improvement.

The all-you-can-eat menu was unfortunately rather disappointing. The sushi practically fell apart. There were too many sauces on it. The rice was either too hard or too mushy. Everything tasted the same. The shrimp were hard, and the breading was way too thick. The meat was okay. The fries were old, as were the prawn crackers. The fried rice was very bad. The same goes for the fried noodles. Some of the dumplings were dry. However, the service was very friendly and accommodating. We definitely won't be back. What a shame.

The food in the restaurant was really delicious, but the service just ruined everything. A waitress who looked Asian brought us dishes several times – each time with such an annoyed expression, slammed the plate down on the table, didn't say a word, and walked off again. We had absolutely no idea what we were even eating – whether it was beef, lamb, or chicken skewers, or what filling the dumplings had. We had to ask others to find out. Sure, maybe she was tired or in a bad mood, but hey, that's no reason to take your frustration out on guests, right? Whether in Europe or Asia – that kind of behavior is simply unacceptable.

We visited Unkay in Freiburg and were completely thrilled. The food arrived very quickly, was extremely delicious, and the portions were generous. The customer service is excellent – friendly, attentive, and solution-oriented. There was a small misunderstanding with our order, which was resolved immediately and without any complications. As a nice surprise, we even got some free food – truly fantastic! The team immediately demonstrated their commitment in another incident: My nephew left his watch in the restaurant, and when we asked about it, they immediately responded quickly and competently. The restaurant is also beautifully decorated and has a welcoming atmosphere. We will definitely be back – a clear and heartfelt recommendation!

We 3 went to dinner a la carte. Just salmon and tuna nigiris and Makis. Awful quality and looks. Rice way to soft, uneven cuts of fish( thickness and lengths) for instance. Makis were soft and not pressed together so they opened up.... For sure we are not returning there. Would not advise to go there. Only positive: speedy service and welcoming smiles....

The sushi here is simply unbelievably delicious! 🍣 Everything is lovingly and beautifully presented – you can immediately tell that the work here is done with quality and care. The selection is huge: from classic rolls to creative creations, there's something for everyone. The prices are perfectly reasonable and, given the quality, absolutely justified. 💸 The ambiance is tastefully designed and invites you to linger. 🪷 However, the place is almost always busy and accordingly noisy – lots of customers mean little peace and quiet. 🔊 If you love good sushi and don't mind a bit of hustle and bustle, this is the place for you. A clear recommendation for all sushi fans! ✅

I personally think it’s one of the best sushi in Freiburg. If you try all you can eat, which I recommend, you have to have patience because sometimes the dishes take a while but I don’t find it bad. Workers are friendly and the place is really nice. The only problem is the parking situation otherwise is nice for friends and families with grown kids because small kids will be overstimulated I think.

I ordered the Myabi Garden menu to go and found the rice to be remarkably well-made. It's not sticky, falls apart in your mouth, but comes together perfectly on the way there. In terms of seasoning, I think the rice could use a bit more vinegar. The tamago/omelet is, of course, a convenience item and definitely not recommended, but that's quite normal for takeaway sushi in Germany.

The all-you-can-eat sushi selection is huge, and the quality is excellent. The only thing that bothered us a bit was the noise level.

Unfortunately, a very bad experience. We ordered sushi to go and were told it would be ready in 20 minutes. We arrived on time—exactly 20 minutes later—and still had to wait over 30 minutes. When we politely asked about it, the waitress shouted at us loudly and rudely. We were also falsely accused of ordering additional dishes, which was untrue. In the end, we received the wrong food. Overall, a very disappointing visit—both in terms of the customer service and the overall experience. We definitely won't be back.

Overall, one of the worst experiences I've ever had in a restaurant. The service staff is truly unfriendly and tries to rip you off financially, especially when ordering. Absolutely worth it! One of the best sushi spots in Freiburg. Unkai offers a great all-you-can-eat sushi experience with fresh ingredients, quick service, and a really nice atmosphere. The quality is way above what you’d expect for all-you-can-eat .the fish is fresh, the rice is perfectly seasoned, and everything is made to order. You can really taste the difference! The staff is friendly, attentive, and super fast with bringing out the orders. It’s not a buffet ,you order from a tablet, and the food is freshly prepared and brought to your table. I loved that! Just a heads-up: drinks are not included in the price, but they have a good selection. They also offer other specials on the menu,which are definitely worth trying too. If you’re in Freiburg and craving good sushi at a fair price, Unkai is a top pick. I’ll definitely be coming back!

This modern, all-you-can-eat restaurant offers a wide selection of freshly prepared dishes, 90% of which impressed us. The sushi is very well prepared, and the fish and meat were also delicious. As expected, the drinks are a bit more expensive than in a regular restaurant, but the price level is in line with the area near the freight station. Update July 19, 2025 We visited Unkai again today and were disappointed. The food was tasteless and so carelessly prepared. The fish of the day arrived half-frozen in its own water, sushi was often forgotten and didn't look anything like the menu photos. The service was very inattentive, often bringing out the wrong food, and causing a disturbance on several occasions. Never again :( €75 wasted

Amazing food quality, with a soothing ambience and an even better price (for the amount of food you get)

Went there for sushi. They offer a buffet option, but there’s a 15-minute wait between orders, and you can request up to 10 pieces at a time. It felt a bit slow, possibly because they served all the sushi at once rather than gradually. That said, the service was excellent—staff were incredibly friendly and attentive.

I don't know anyone who's managed all 10 rounds of the buffet here = you always get full. Not everything you order from the buffet always arrives, but since you have 10 rounds, that's not a problem – just order again or say something. We all love going back.

It's amazing how much of what you get on your plate here is mostly too good to eat. Visually, the kitchen pulls out all the stops; I don't know of any restaurant that serves food so beautifully that you have a small work of art sitting in front of you on the table. The taste is also top-notch. The sushi tastes excellent, is freshly rolled, and isn't made of 90% cheap rice (like in other restaurants), but is packed with fish, vegetables, shrimp, etc. Not exactly cheap, but still worth every cent. Definitely a must for lovers of Japanese cuisine! -+-+-+-+-+- Additional information: After two years and several visits to Unkai, I unfortunately have to lower my rating by one star. For some time now, Unkai has been offering an additional all-you-can-eat concept, which, in my opinion, has a negative impact on the overall quality of the sushi. It's a real shame, as there are enough "full-on" temples, and this one has simply offered something unique. -+-+-+-+-+- Addition 2: After another visit, I'm lowering my rating from the initial 5 stars to 2. The reason is the absolutely unacceptable quality that now ends up on the table here. What was initially a visually appealing sushi has now become a fast-food monotony: everything looks the same, everything tastes the same (namely, like cheap rice). No variety, no seasoning, no creativity anymore. It's basically the McDonald's of sushi restaurants. The fried sushi is just a lump of rice dripping with grease. The negative highlight was the "Grilled Chicken with Korean Chili Sauce" (quote from the menu), which turned out to be rock-hard fried chicken nuggets with ketchup on the plate. It's a real shame how this once great and creative restaurant has become such a loveless and tasteless place. Unfortunately, that's the end of Unkai for us.

Unfortunately, our visit to Unkai was a complete disappointment. We didn't particularly enjoy the food. The fried items were fried for too short a time and weren't crispy; the fryer probably wasn't hot enough (we were there for lunch and were almost the only ones in the restaurant). The sushi rolls were unbalanced in terms of content (too much rice and too much or too little of certain ingredients), which made the individual pieces very large and unbalanced in flavor. Unfortunately, the fried rice contained frozen vegetables, and the gyoza were probably more of a convenience product. So, technically, the food overall was simply not well prepared. The sesame sauce on some of the sushi rolls didn't taste good at all; it was a bit like fermented apple cider vinegar, but that's a matter of personal taste. What's really unacceptable, however, is that many allergens weren't declared. For example, egg in the fried rice and cream cheese under the avocado in the nigiri—neither of which is mentioned on the menu. In the worst case scenario, this can be life-threatening! The service was extremely curt and at times mumbled so unmotivatedly that you couldn't understand anything and even felt like you had to apologize for being there and disturbing them. Then, when it came time to pay, they were a completely different person: super friendly, smiling, and communicative. These may all be isolated minor criticisms, but for a price of €34 per person for the meal alone, it was, overall, a very disappointing experience. The website's design is very concerned with creating a high-quality image, presumably to differentiate itself from competitors with the same principle (all-you-can-eat, tablet ordering), but in reality, it turns out to be much more show than substance. Unfortunately, Unkai was by far the worst of all the restaurants of this type that we've eaten at so far.

We had daughter/Mother's Day. Went to Unkai for the first time. We were warmly welcomed and we took a seat on the terrace. The sushi was so beautifully presented on plates and boards. We were also impressed with the taste. Since I come from the catering industry myself, I found it annoying that there were 10 different sushi that always came one after the other. Why disturbing? If there are 3 sushi on the board and you consist of 2 people, that's not exhilarating. Even with plain rice, there was nothing added to it but again afterward. Too stupid, only soy sauce, it couldn't be seen anywhere whether there were other sauces. But that's complaining at a high level. One thing is certain: we will come back and recommend it to others. We are totally thrilled! Very friendly, quick service and such great food! We took the all-you-can-eat buffet. Similar to some with this concept, you order via a tablet. Every dish blew us away! New favorite restaurant! The only drawback I have is that I find the drinks a bit too expensive at €6 for 0.4 l.

The all you can eat is highly recommended. You definitely get your money's worth. Also gets plenty full. The individual dishes (approx. 80) arrive super quickly and are of high quality. The service is super nice and accommodating. The noise level is a bit loud in the evenings, especially on weekends, but certainly a bit more pleasant during the week.

Dear Unkai-Asian Restaurant team, We were in your restaurant this evening, April 18, 2025, with our two children and took advantage of the “All You Can Eat” buffet. Unfortunately, we have to inform you that we were very disappointed with our visit - and that was not because of the quality of the food, but because of the unfriendly and inappropriate treatment on the part of your service staff. Although we were aware that leftovers should be avoided, we slightly overestimated the portions - which can easily happen, especially with children. When we regretted this and apologized, the waiter started counting the remaining sushi rolls and told us that we actually had to pay extra for them. Ultimately, the amount was not charged, but this unnecessary confrontation and the accusatory tone alone were extremely unpleasant - especially after we had already paid **155 euros** for the buffet. An “All You Can Eat” concept thrives on guests being able to try different dishes in a relaxed atmosphere without constantly having to worry about taking “too much”. The fact that we were put under so much pressure over a few pieces of sushi instead is an absolute disgrace and ruined our evening forever. We expect not only good food from a restaurant in your price range, but also hospitable and understanding service - especially towards families with children. In the future, please sensitize your employees to treat guests more respectfully in order to avoid such unpleasant situations.

We met up for dinner to try out the all-you-can-eat option and were generally satisfied with the experience. A few of the dishes didn’t quite hit the mark — on some of the sushi plates, the rice-to-fish ratio leaned a little too heavily toward the rice side. And while the chicken wasn’t quite up to the quality we had hoped for, the beef tenderloin and the king prawns more than made up for it. There were also some noticeable gaps between courses, even though we placed our next round of orders in good time — but nothing that threw off the flow of the evening entirely. All in all, the price-to-value ratio is fair, and if you’re coming in with an appetite and a craving to try a bit of everything, this place absolutely does the trick.

Large selection of dishes, something for every taste, good service. A few dishes were not served, probably lost in the crowd, It was quite busy, which speaks for how popular and good it is. It's better to reserve in advance. I found it a bit too narrow, but you can get past each other easily.

Unfortunately I cannot recommend the restaurant. The food was bland and tasteless. The sushi is not recommended at all. The mojito iced tea we ordered was a simple lemonade filled with a little brown sugar and some mint for 6 euros. And in two out of three rounds something was always forgotten. We were satisfied with the service itself.

Price performance is brutally good. For €34 pp two 500g T-bone steaks and 70 more dishes. The 7 of us filled our bellies. The dishes we ate would have easily cost over €100 pp in other restaurants. By the way, the staff was really nice and the toilets were very well maintained. It was upscale interior as well as ambience.

Some generated ones are just not good. The service tried hard but couldn't keep up. The worst thing was that the food we ordered simply didn't arrive. And when they did come, it was at the end when everyone had already finished desert. All in all, no risk of repetition.

We were at Unkai yesterday and had a great evening. We reserved seats via Google at lunchtime. The ordering system via tablet was super easy to use, the food came to the table fresh and quickly. The selection was huge (over 80 dishes included in the all-inclusive) - from classic sushi to creative specialty rolls. We were particularly impressed with avocado nigiri, fried cauliflower and sweet dumpling. The warm dishes such as tempura and gyoza (with chicken and vegetables, as well as the vegetarian version) were also delicious. The quality of the food was top and the portion sizes were just right so nothing was wasted. The ambience was also a big plus: modern, stylish and cozy at the same time. The lighting was pleasant and the atmosphere was very relaxed. Perfect for a nice evening with family/friends or a nice dinner for two. The staff was friendly and attentive, which made the entire visit even more enjoyable. We'll definitely be back! A clear recommendation for all sushi lovers.

Mass processing. Sometimes food didn't come at all or almost 2 hours later. The taste is okay, but nothing more. Waited 15 minutes despite reservation. No real system to be recognized: Friendly, but one person doesn't know what the other is doing...

Yesterday I was in this restaurant for the third time with my wife. When it comes to all-you-can-eat concepts, I am generally skeptical about the quality. However, Unkai manages to bring the food to the table quickly and in very good quality. The service was also very attentive and, for example, brought us an additional portion of wasabi before we had finished it. We will come back.

The food tastes very good, the staff is friendly. What's less nice is that after spending time, even far away from the kitchen, your clothes absorb the smell. The flickering bulbs should also perhaps be removed or, better yet, replaced straight away.

The food is great. Unfortunately, many of the all-you-can-eat dishes didn't reach us.

We had ordered for Saturday at 6 p.m. Restaurant was very busy and we had to wait 15 minutes. You get a tablet for the all-yo-can menu. You can place 5 orders per 15 minutes - you should at least do so at the beginning. Not even half of the food came from our first round. The first drinks were brought to the next table. It was very hectic and chaotic at the beginning, but then it settled down. From the second round onwards, the food always came quite quickly, but dishes were always missing or dishes arrived that we hadn't ordered. Food was very tasty, service was very friendly. Quite loud locally, but normal with so many guests. Definitely recommended, despite delivery weaknesses

Waitstaff are not very attentive. Special mention of a male East Asian waiter with bad attitude. Food okay; you pay for what you get but they do not look like in their pictures on the tablet.

Price performance is really good for a Japanese all-you-can-eat restaurant. Food and drinks can be easily ordered using a tablet. The food is really delicious and there is a large selection - even for vegetarians.

Old and bad tasting sushi, no response to a complaint

Very tasty, but not much choice at all you cant eat if you don't like sushi that much, you can choose other dishes, but it costs extra. The drinks depend on the price. The atmosphere is a bit cramped and the neighboring table is very close to you. I'm not the tallest and had to wear my winter jacket so that I didn't sit too low to the table (sat on the bench). The staff very friendly.

Waited 25 minutes and wasn't served. Also very loud atmosphere and disinterested employees.
