Permanently closed! The Greeks who were there before (before Alexandros!) were very good, friendly and tasty! The "boss" at Alexandros wasn't particularly friendly and the official hygiene reports from the health department of the city of Hamburg(!) from Alexandros were such that we didn't go back after being disappointed twice...
This Greek restaurant is amazing, let me tell you why. When you walk in, you are greeted with a bright friendly smile from the owner. The food is cooked to perfection, every time. The tzatziki is creamy, the food is authentic, the souvlaki choriatiko (pork) was tender and well seasoned, fries were nicely salted. The portion of salad was delicious and enough. Visually, the dishes are served with pride and care. Most times, I am not satisfied when I dine out, either the food was ok but the service was terrible or vice versa. Ela Mesa has been consistent with excellent customer service, the authenticity of the dish and the flavour of the food satisfies the soul. The ambiance is lovely and cozy. When I leave Germany to go back to Canada, I wish I could find a restaurant as delicious but nothing comes close. Hands down, the BEST restaurant I have ever had the pleasure of eating at in my 52 years.
For me the best Greek in the area.
I always enjoy eating gyros with Metaxa sauce and am not disappointed in the taste.
The cheese from the gratinated gyro is now too aromatic for me
I prefer a milder cheese like Gouda for gratinating.
The MEtaxa sauce was also a bit too weak last time and was too thick
lots of vegetables in it, so next time more “Metaxa” sauce please ;)
All in all, a very tasty meal served here.
P/L is still within limits as you drive home really full...
Addendum 2024 Unfortunately the quality has deteriorated significantly after the change of ownership
We've eaten there several times now, as my husband loves the place. The food was always okay. Not bad, but not exceptionally good either.
Unfortunately, something negative happened to us for the second time.
The first time was in the summer. I was brought the wrong appetizer and brazenly claimed that I had ordered it. The nice lady, I think it's the manager, smoothed things over.
Today we tried the buffet.
Well, what can I say? I'll start with the salad. Instead of many small bowls with different vegetables/salads, there was one large salad bowl. Tuna was extra. Okay, I could overlook that.
Regarding the hot food: there were four containers, with "Meat" written in front of them. You had to guess. The bifteki and the salmon were unfortunately very dry.
The entire buffet table definitely needs better labeling.
For dessert: my husband asked if we could have ice cream. Since there was no dessert in sight (apart from the fruit skewers, which actually looked very appealing and our child enjoyed it), the question was answered in the affirmative. We were even told that each of us could take two scoops.
In the end, the ice cream was charged extra for my husband and me and wasn't included in the buffet. If we have to pay for it ourselves, why are we only allowed to take two scoops? Then it shouldn't matter to them whether my husband takes 5 or 10 scoops. Furthermore, as mentioned, my husband's question was answered in the affirmative, saying that the ice cream was included in the buffet.
I also told the cashier that my husband had asked. He then blamed it on his young colleague. No. My husband had asked him.
So we had to pay for the ice cream and feel ripped off.
I feel sorry for the nice lady who works there, who I assume is the boss. But we won't be going there again.
She is nice and friendly, he hardly talks and just turns his back to you. The shop is very old and looks really shabby and not clean. The salads or even the whole counter is not inviting. The food itself (gyros plate with fries) was really tasty and the tzatziki was also really good 👍
I'm always thrilled when I order.
Even subsequent additions are possible without any problems. I simply love ordering there and have been a regular customer for years.
