🍺 Best schnitzel in Mainz – huge, crispy & with a killer sauce! I was at the Zum Goldstein restaurant in Mainz today around 4:30 p.m. after Google & ChatGPT led me there as the "best place for crispy schnitzel in a beer garden atmosphere" – and I wasn't disappointed. 😋 📍 Location & Parking: The restaurant is located on a small side street in Mainz's old town. Parking is difficult – resident parking spaces are scarce – it's best to park in the Cinestar parking garage, at the former Karstadt department store, or at the Teegut and walk a few minutes. 🚶‍♂️ 🌳 Ambience: Beautiful, classic beer garden with large chestnut trees, cozy wooden benches, and shady spots. No music playing – just the pleasant murmur of the guests. When I was there, there were about 10 people there, and they were already preparing for a busy evening. Very pleasant and relaxed. 👨‍🍳 Service: Friendly, attentive, and fast. Even though the table had already been set for the evening, the food arrived fresh, hot, and perfectly presented within 10-15 minutes. 🥘 Food: I had schnitzel with mushroom cream sauce and fried potatoes – and what can I say: • Two large, perfectly golden-brown and crispy breaded schnitzels 🥇 • Homemade mushroom cream sauce, creamy, spicy, and full of flavor 🍄 • Crispy, well-seasoned fried potatoes 🥔 Portions are generous – and I like to eat a lot of schnitzel. Here, I was stuffed and happy. 💶 Value for money: €26 for this quantity and quality is absolutely justified. It was worth every cent. ✨ Conclusion: For me, one of the best schnitzels I've ever eaten. Perfect for a date ❤️, an evening with friends 🍻, or a cozy get-together. I'll definitely be back!

They said it was a children friendly establishment, we were turned way after calling the restaurant hours in advance, we were told that reservations were not possible and that it was „first come, first serve“. Upon arriving we were confronted with very rude staff that insisted that it was a reservations only restaurant and that we must have misunderstood staff on the phone. I would not recommend the restaurant and they should be removed from the child friendly list on trip advisor. No go!!!!

Super friendly staff, despite the stress, delicious food and a great atmosphere!

First, the highlights: the food is okay, but the service is remarkably poor, to the point that I wouldn't even go there. My wife, our 2-year-old, and I tried the place for the first time in March: (it was cold outside) we weren't allowed in. A very rude brunette waitress said there wasn't room for strollers inside (our child was sleeping, and we wanted to take the opportunity to eat). So we weren't allowed to sit at a table (we were already inside the restaurant, and all the other guests saw us not being allowed to go any further inside). Our second time was last weekend. We were invited for dinner, and the name of the place sounded familiar. Only when we stood outside did I realize it was the same place as in March. This time it was summer, so I figured we were sitting outside, so a stroller shouldn't be a problem. But there was one problem: as soon as we sat down, we were told there was no cold beer available because the tap's cooling system was broken. Since it's a beer garden, this is a big problem, but the problem wasn't so much the lack of cold beer, but the attitude of the previous waitress who had refused us entry in March: When I asked what the alternative was, as I wanted a cold beer (not a crazy thing to do in a beer garden), she replied, "Go to another restaurant." While we were talking on the phone to take our order, she mentioned this four times. We ended up staying, as no one in our group was drinking alcohol, and I didn't want to make a big fuss. As a side note, the bill was €160 for schnitzel and drinks. There were four of us, and I thought the bill was excessive. I never expect impeccable service, but this was some of the worst I can remember in any restaurant I've ever visited, so I felt I had to share my experience.

A nice courtyard for a comfortable seat. Friendly, good, and attentive service. The food is good, but a bit pricey. The schnitzel portion size is excellent, but the bratwurst portion size is a bit small. All in all, it's good; we'll be back.

The service this Saturday was really very friendly. We had schnitzel with fried potatoes and green sauce. The sauce was very tasty. The fried potatoes and schnitzel were average. The portion size was modest, but definitely too small for the price. Conclusion: The food wasn't bad, the ambiance and service were absolutely top-notch, but far too expensive for what it is.

In my opinion quality of the food is overrated to start with. We were a group of 5 people and the waiter forgot my order. I had to wait another 20 minutes before being served. Mistakes happen and it's not a big deal, but at least have the courtesy to apologize to me directly instead of my male colleague! Didn't offer any type of compensation either.

Ich habe mich sehr auf den Besuch gefreut, war jedoch insgesamt enttäuscht. Die Preise sind auf einem sehr hohen Niveau, was hohe Erwartungen an Qualität und Service weckt – leider wurden diese nicht erfüllt. Die Atmosphäre des Restaurants ist nett, aber nichts, was den Preis rechtfertigt. Fazit: Wer gehobene Preise zahlt, erwartet auch gehobene Qualität – hier stimmt das Verhältnis leider nicht. Ich würde einen Besuch nur eingeschränkt empfehlen.

After the theater, we had a nightcap in the beer garden... unfortunately, at 10 p.m., we were only allowed one. We were kicked out at 10:30, even though the place doesn't close until 11 p.m. We weren't given a warm welcome beforehand either. I might give it a second chance, because the atmosphere is simply fantastic.

It was okay. The cheese spaetzle was delicious, and the schnitzel was okay at best. The portions were quite small. I wouldn't go back.

Die Stadtoase unter majestätischen Kastanien setzt auf eine erfreulich überschaubare Speisekarte mit regionalem Anklang. Die Vermutung, wenn sich die Küche auf einige wenige Gerichte konzentriert, dann steigt die Wahrscheinlichkeit handwerklich überzeugende Speisen zu bekommen, wurde leider enttäuscht. Die Saumagenbratwurst, ein Produkt mit ohnehin gestrecktem Brät, wurde lauwarm serviert. Dafür einschließlich einer Sättigungsbeilage satte 21,50 Euro aufzurufen zeugt vor einer mutigen Preisgestaltung. Der unter zwei kleinen Schitzeln verborgene Kartoffelsalat überraschte durch seine gelbliche Einfärbgebung und zum Teil grob gewürfelten Kartoffelstücken, die nur knapp die Grenze zu mundgerecht erreichten. Während das Servicepersonal freundlich und umsichtig seinen Dienst versah, scheint im Verborgenen es in der Küche an der Ernsthaftigkeit des Tuns zu mangeln.

The food was quite good and the service was excellent. Unfortunately, only the terrace is open in summer, and there are a few small flies under the large chestnut trees. The small salad as a side dish to the main course, at €6, was, in my opinion, far too expensive for the small bowl... All in all, it was a good dinner.

So cozy!! I sat in the courtyard!! The service was so friendly and attentive!! The oven-baked Camembert with lots of fresh vegetables tasted soooo good! It also came with a salad garnish and toasted white bread!! Perfect!! Thank you for the great food!

The schnitzel: Champion sauce too runny and there was little of it. Fried potatoes with no seasoning, no onions/bacon and too expensive for the price without a side salad. Cheese spaetzle tasted of nothing and the cheese tasted of nothing. Also too expensive for what it didn't taste like. Sorry, I can't recommend it. Service very nice/friendly.

A wonderful visit to the Goldstein restaurant! The food was of the highest quality – fresh, flavorful, and lovingly prepared. The atmosphere was pleasant and cozy, perfect for a relaxing evening. A real highlight was our waitress: very friendly, attentive, and with a natural charm that made the whole evening even more enjoyable. What was particularly nice was how flexible and accommodating she was to our requests. You feel so welcome. Highly recommended – we'd love to come back!

We ordered a beef and a pork burger. Unfortunately, both were extremely greasy and disappointing in taste. It's actually hard to make a truly bad burger—but unfortunately, the one at this restaurant was barely edible. There was also a distinct lack of salt. I can't comment on the other dishes, but I definitely wouldn't recommend this burger.

Way too expensive for the quality and quantity

I went to Goldstein with my colleague for dinner after our motorcycle tour. It was quite nice. The service was attentive and polite, so everything was fine. But we both ordered what I would call the Jägerschnitzel (hunter's schnitzel) with fried potatoes. Up until then, everything was fine. When we finally got our food, we were amazed. There were two small schnitzels and what felt like two tablespoons of fried potatoes on top, not to mention the sauce, which also felt like just a blob. I assumed the mushrooms were fresh, but unfortunately, that wasn't the case, at least that was our impression; they were more like cans. The schnitzels also felt like they came straight from the hairdresser, so they weren't fresh from the pan. So, all in all, for €23 without a side salad, I expect something different! Yes, the food was quite okay, but it was still the first and last time for us. P.S. Here's a photo of a Jägerschnitzel the way I imagine it, especially with a side salad for €14.90. Think about whether or how long you'll still be welcoming guests at your prices.

The food was very good, albeit rather small in quantity and very expensive. We sat on the terrace: it's lovely, but the pollen count was enormous in May—visibly lots of pollen and leaves, etc.

Lokal etwas versteckt. Jedenfalls nicht leicht zu finden. Bedienung freundlich. Bemängeln kann man die Sauberkeit der Tische. Eingetrockneter Vogelkot zeugt nicht von großem Interesse an einladener Atmosphäre. Der Spargel war unterschiedlich gegart, teils fest, teils noch hart. Bei den Schnitzeln war die extra bestellte grüne Sauce ziemlich fest. Einen Löffel gab's nicht gleich dazu.

Six of us were guests on the terrace. Food and service were very good. We were adequately informed of the special features and the food was not only visually very nice to look at, but also tasted good. Zum Goldstein is highly recommended, thank you very much.

Overpriced - neglected Hopefully the kitchen is cleaner like the dining room and terrace. Everything was very unkempt. Wine selection rather poor at expensive prices. We didn't eat anything. Drinks (e.g. from a tetra pack), cheap water from a discount store. Service was super nice.

Four of us had dinner here on Friday evening. A very cozy and rustic atmosphere, with great attention to detail! The service was extremely friendly! We had Meenzer hand cheese and beef carpaccio as a starter, and as a main course we had 2x asparagus with potatoes and 2x schnitzel with green sauce. Everything was very very tasty. The asparagus was cooked perfectly. The small dessert with chocolate mousse and espresso was also very tasty. Price-performance ratio is right! We would love to come back!

We spontaneously stopped by "Zum Goldstein" in search of a delicious schnitzel and enjoyed wonderful service and two delicious schnitzels (mushroom cream and pepper sauce) in a cozy atmosphere. Top 👍

A great place to spend the evening, I think if it were warmer I would be happy to stay on the terrace. The food is tasty, but a bit expensive for the quality and price, because the vegetables were frozen, not fresh. The service is very friendly and nice, I would come back again.

We had a good time there. The service was extremely well trained and very nice. Despite the dining room being fully booked, we received our food within half an hour.

Wir waren zu fünft zum Gänseessen da und ich muss sagen: Das Essen war perfekt! Super zarte Gans, Beilagen perfekt und reichlich, und der Crumble zum Nachtisch auch klasse! Die Bedienung war sehr freundlich und zuvorkommend. Ein rundum schöner Abend für uns alle. Würde ich jederzeit weiterempfehlen.

Die Schnitzel sind sehr lecker. Dünn, knusprig aber nicht wirklich groß. Die Bratkartoffeln waren kalt und komplett ungewürzt. Bedienung war sehr bemüht und freundlich. Barkeeper wirkte trotz dass der Laden fast leer war etwas überfordert und unroutiniert Location sehr klein. Preise angesichts der kleinen Portionen ziemlich teuer.

We spontaneously went to Goldstein. It was a really great experience and we will eat here again. First of all, I would highly praise the service. The staff was incredibly friendly and well trained. The meal took a while, but it was a surprise in terms of taste. We paid around €100 for two people.

Wow! Never had a bad experience here and I had several meals over the course of the last year. Very convenient for the central Mainz attractions like the Staatstheater, and the food is excellent. I love the outside pavilion with the trees.

Very small portions for the mighty prices! If you ask for fries you get a not very nice NO! I hadn't looked at the menu yet and asked for a Kiba and was given a brisk NO! Unfortunately the starter soup was just a blob, I know it differently! I often go to good restaurants but here only the ambience is okay. The schnitzel was good but the fried potatoes were soggy and thrown together! No salad with the schnitzel and no one asked for an alternative to the currant sauce! €3.90 for a mini stale Cola Zero is also a disgrace

A lovingly rustic, very traditional restaurant in the heart of Mainz. Very competent service and a pleasantly varied menu. Every menu is lovingly prepared, presented and served. I haven't eaten as well as in “Goldstein” for a long time. Also ideal for small groups. Thank you very much to the whole team!

Cute restaurant with a really nice patio. I ordered the goulash, which was good, but not goulash. More like a beef pot roast. But very tasty. What was a bit odd is that pretty much all dishes (including mine) had pumpkin. Probably seasonal, but it seemed a little too much. All in all, a really nice experience, with great service.

Zum Goldstein is a great restaurant with a comfortably furnished beer garden. An early reservation for 8 people was no problem. A nice welcome from very friendly staff in the beer garden. All dishes are deliciously prepared and they taste that way too. Plus a cold beer or wine. Afterwards there was delicious dessert. The waitresses are nice, quick and courteous. The prices are reasonable and fair. We would love to come back to Mainz.

Schnitzel a little too much salt. Fried potatoes, oh well. Food was only luke warm. Plates carelessly arranged. Too expensive, €23 with some fried potatoes. Service, tried hard. Ambience, very small and cramped.

Called, supposedly 1 schnitzel takes half an hour. In the end I had to wait another almost 15 minutes and for €22.50 it really didn't taste good. They don't have fries, that's ok, but the fried potatoes are soggy, some are completely over-fried and some are almost raw, really disgusting. It was the last time I ordered there!

Nous avons adoré ce restaurant et sa terrasse légèrement surélevée par rapport au niveau de la rue. Assis à l'ombre de ces arbres centenaires, au calme de ces ruelles attenantes à juste une rue de la principale rue piétonne de Mayence, la gentillesse du service, et surtout la qualité des plats (locaux) servis nous ont vraiment tous séduits. Not for people with walking difficulties (lots of stairs). Small menu, food is good. Unfortunately the mashed potatoes were too salty or the cook is in love 😉😋. The knuckle was very good👍. Green sauce could have been two more potatoes. Wasps in the outdoor area! But only come when the meat is there🙈. The service is hard😐.

The “Grilled Asparagus” starter for 13.50 euros contains exactly 3 asparagus: two medium-thick white ones and one thin green one. The two white asparagus were halved lengthwise so that the plate didn't look quite so orphaned. Inflation or not, at this price the landlord has lost his money.

We were there for the first time and immediately loved it. The owner is very nice and accommodating, always had a smile during service. The burger with the homemade patty, fried green asparagus, wild garlic pesto and goat cheese was the burner. We'll definitely be back.

Mal wieder im Goldstein mit Freunden zum Essen gewesen. Fazit: Service unverändert super freundlich und kompetent und das die angebotenen Gerichte hervorragend. Es bleibt also weiterhin einer unserer Favoriten in Mainz. Vorherige Reservierung unbedingt notwendig; bei unserem Besuch (Samstagabend) waren alle Tische reserviert.

The restaurant is largely visited by tourists, and the service is attentive and quick. The menu reads more ambitiously than the food ultimately turns out. The game dish we ordered was, apart from the accompanying red cabbage, quite small and tasted conventional, especially the overpriced dessert.

Ich bin sehr froh, dieses Restaurant entdeckt zu haben. Endlich ein deutsches Restaurant, dass mit der Zeit geht und deutsche Gerichte mutig neu interpretiert, ohne dabei preislich komplett abzuheben. Das Ambiente in Holzoptik ist modern und reduziert im alten Fachwerkhaus. Eine einzelne Servicekraft kümmerte sich um den recht kleinen, aber sehr gemütlichen Raum mit absoluter Hingabe und Aufmerksamkeit. Ich komme gern wieder.
