We sat outside and enjoyed the wonderful view of the Inselsberg in the sunshine. The food was very, very good. It wasn't run-of-the-mill, but rather prepared with finesse. The service was also excellent. A trip is definitely worth it.

The portion sizes could be a bit smaller. It's almost impossible to finish the main course with just an appetizer. Very friendly and attentive service, who asked several times if everything was okay and if there were any requests. The food was very appetizing, but the dishes were lacking a bit of salt. We highly recommend it; it's an insider tip given the inconspicuous location.

Not again. Clean and tidy, but the food wasn't worth the price. The dumplings were watery and sticky, obviously soaked in water for hours, the goulash was too strong and riddled with bones. The red cabbage tasted exactly like it came from a can. My conclusion: Never again. I wouldn't recommend it.

Today we celebrated my mother's 75th birthday here. From a small lunch with coffee and cake (we delivered the birthday cake ourselves) to a spontaneous dinner, we all enjoyed the day and felt incredibly comfortable. We stopped in with 6 adults and 5 children. The playground took a lot of the pressure off the children during the (completely acceptable) wait. The staff was very attentive and courteous without being intrusive. All of our needs and requests were promptly met to our complete satisfaction. We found the value for money to be very good. The food was excellently prepared. Even as a vegetarian, I found my place among the meat dishes. An absolute recommendation for the region.

We went there for a small birthday celebration. The service and atmosphere at the Köhlerhütte were excellent, as always. The food was very tasty, with a slight drawback to the schnitzel, which was overcooked and too dry for our liking. However, the staff were extremely accommodating and took care of this. I highly recommend this place. You're guaranteed a beautiful view of the Inselsberg, weather permitting. Try to make a reservation in advance, just to be on the safe side. The food was delicious; the Schmerbacher Sülzeo (spiced beef) tastes fantastic. 👌

The Schmerbach Charcoal Burner's Hut impresses with a very inviting dining room, lovingly and comfortably furnished. The extremely friendly and attentive service is particularly noteworthy – guests always feel welcome. The cleanliness of the restrooms also deserves praise. The food was attractively presented and overall tasty. The presentation of the dishes was particularly positive. However, both the fried potatoes and the roast beef could have been better – the flavor could have been a bit better. A small disappointment was the lack of information in the confirmation email that reservations are only for the dining room. This should be clearly communicated in advance, especially during great summer weather or for special occasions. We found it somewhat disturbing that the dining room smelled strongly of a kitchen that evening. Furthermore, a surcharge of €2 for a simple change of side dish is difficult to understand from a guest's perspective – it seems rather petty and tarnishes the otherwise positive impression. Conclusion: Overall, a lovely place with a comfortable atmosphere and friendly service. With minor adjustments to the cuisine and more transparency regarding the rules, the experience could be even more complete.

A fantastic ambiance, a beautiful location, a large hall with a projector and screen. Unfortunately, booking the hall for an event is not recommended at all. The kitchen is hopelessly overwhelmed with a registered group of 60 people and, instead of a slimmed-down menu, offers just two main courses. No appetizers, no desserts, and allergy sufferers are completely out of luck. Although à la carte is served next door, they can't even provide soup or something similar for individual guests. The previously discussed dishes are also not among the two menu items. The service is unfortunately abysmal. Four waiters are unable to correctly assign drinks to the tables and wander aimlessly between the rows. Orders are completely ignored and never arrive, despite requests. Although only two dishes were offered, ordering and assigning plates takes far too long. The dishes are not written on the beer mats, and the cashier forgets to take the payment at the end. As the event organizer, I'm stuck with eight missing meals – that's absolutely unacceptable! Consider that I filled the hall with 60 people on a weekday, and as a thank you, I'm stuck with an €80 bill. The next day, the operator wanted to call back, but that was three months ago! Unfortunately, I won't be seeing them again! All in all, a lovely atmosphere with terrible service! We won't be using them for events again.

An excellent venue for events or spontaneous outings. It's located in the middle of the forest and offers ample parking below the climb and behind the restaurant. A walk through the forest can be added on. Children can play outside in the playground while grandparents and grandparents relax on the outdoor terrace. The interior is very tastefully decorated!

A very tasty meal with a great ambience

This forest restaurant is highly recommended!!! A place with a beautiful view and welcoming hospitality. We, two people, chose a table on the terrace in the summer weather. The menu offers a wide selection of dishes and drinks. Our choice: venison goulash with red cabbage and dumplings, accompanied by a non-alcoholic wheat beer. It was a very good choice!!! :-) Important to mention: the service staff were very friendly and competent. :-) :-) 5 stars for ambience, service, and food are truly deserved!!! We'll be back... A nice restaurant with a playground.

I was generally very impressed with the Köhlerhütte. The food is good and the service is always friendly. Unfortunately, it's not possible to order anything from the children's menu if you're a little hungry. If you want to, you automatically have to order a double portion. When I asked why I, as an adult, wasn't allowed to order anything from the children's menu, the answer was, "It's the boss's order." Well, I answered that question myself: I probably wouldn't have generated enough revenue with the small portion. So I settled for one beer and then went to another restaurant where I could have a small snack, where it was no problem to order a smaller portion. It's a real shame that it's like this. In my opinion, every meal sold, whether large or small, is important for my business, but greed is usually greater.

A definite recommendation! Great location, tasteful decor, friendly service, and, above all, an absolutely convincing and delicious selection of food. We enjoy coming here again and again.

We visited here for the first time today, following a recommendation. The food, service, and ambiance were all excellent. There's actually an accessible restroom for our wheelchair user, something we rarely find in this area. We'll definitely be back.

Seven of us went to the restaurant spontaneously on a Sunday evening after a hike and got the last free table. The staff was super friendly and attentive and the food was, as always, delicious. We'd love to come back.

08/15 - standard porridge (roulade, roast meat, seasoned meat, salmon...), zero uniqueness! Unfortunately, all the main courses were only lukewarm, which is a shame because they tasted very good! Rostbrätel with schnitzel meat! Special requests are ignored and smiled away by the waitress, very strange. Soft ice cream too watery! Complaints are not taken seriously! Toilets very clean, great location, nice atmosphere. If you just want to get a voucher, you should allow 30 minutes. If someone thinks that you will be offered something to drink while you wait, they are unfortunately mistaken! Ultimately there is a lack of structure and innovation.

Service was inattentive, very rude, and the staff were inappropriately dressed. The food wasn't as good as one would expect for the price, and the atmosphere was rather uncomfortable (reheated food from Christmas Eve lunch). I hope improvements will be made in the future.

Unfortunately, I can't recommend this restaurant. The fried potatoes were inedible. The pork steak was pounded flat like a beer mat. The seasoned meat was dry and mushy. The kitchen staff is incompetent. The menu lists pork loin steak, but all steaks and schnitzels are made from pork neck, as confirmed by the service staff. The price-performance ratio is absolutely unjustified.

The kitchen is always working on new, delicious ideas and concepts. We are always thrilled and happy to have this great location in our town. Keep it up!

12/25/24 Christmas evening Positive: It was really tasty and everyone was very friendly, the location is chic Negative: - RTL Hits Radio inappropriate music for the ambience - five different service staff at our table, all in different outfits, seem unstructured (sporty leggings, moose costume, jeans and t-shirt) -Starter prepared too far in advance, sauce dried out -no bread with the soup, soup too cold, no garnish -no ice in the limo -No requests from staff for additional drinks -The menu only lists the “filling” of the main course, even when asked, the staff could not provide any information about the “filling”. Only after further consultation -Cutlery from the starter should initially remain at the table for the main course, but was then cleared away and re-set, seems improvised and without concept -Sequence of gears too fast -Dessert too cold (baked apple) Overall, we honestly felt like we were “pushed through” and as if everyone was very happy when the guests were processed quickly and left the premises again. It also seems as if there is no central organization/management that has developed and implemented a clear concept. Staff doesn't seem professional.

We were there for lunch on the second holiday. Reservation required of course. It was in menu form two starters, a main course of your choice and a dessert trio. The staff was always friendly, despite the many guests, we never had to wait long for the next course. We left very full and satisfied and would love to come back.

Nicely presented restaurant. The service was OK and the food was tasty. What wasn't great was that the meat was raw (pork schnitzel). Unfortunately, this information was not passed on to the chef. At the end of the evening I had to pay for the meal. Of course I refused and it was accepted without hesitation. However, the apple spritzer was charged (€2.70). Overall the restaurant is not bad. Service was so ok.

Very modern and stylishly furnished restaurant. The food was very tasty (we had the Hüttenschnitzel and the Hüttenburger). Price performance for the food is definitely justified. The drinks prices are also very fair (Cola 0.5l €4.5). There are sufficient parking spaces at the house. The conditions were friendly and helpful. Would visit the restaurant again at any time.

Today we went on a wonderful Sunday trip to the Köhlerhütte in Schmerbach. This forest house is furnished with a lot of love and has a fantastic location with great views and hiking opportunities. A great selection of dishes and drinks with great service. Highly recommended and we would love to come back and be your guests.

We were able to visit this extraordinary restaurant with our friends from Ruhla on October 26th, 2024. An oasis of well-being on the edge of the Thuringian mountains. Exceptionally friendly welcome, great and highly recommended cuisine and the team welcomes you as a stranger and you leave as a friend. This is how gastronomy should be. Unfortunately disappointed with the quality of the food. Beef roulade very tough, frozen chicken breast. And poorly seasoned. However, the atmosphere is very nice.

We celebrated our son's baptism in the Köhler Hütte and were very satisfied. From planning to implementation, everything corresponded to our wishes and ideas. The staff was very nice and friendly, especially attentive. We never lacked anything. There was nothing wrong with the food, everyone enjoyed it and it was very nicely prepared. Our guests had nothing but praise for the celebration. And we can recommend the Köhler Hütte with a very clear conscience.

We went to the charcoal burner's hut for dinner today, me for the first time. We were pleasantly surprised, very modern and invitingly furnished. The staff wasn't intrusive, but still always present and very friendly. The food was very good, both to the eye and to the taste. In short, we would love to come back and a big thank you to the team.

Foreword, the Waldhaus Köhlerhütte represents a long-standing tradition in this region; it was also very well attended in GDR times. Due to new construction and changes of ownership, there have certainly been ups and downs for every restaurateur over the years. Since this year, I have been extremely surprised at how this ambience has developed into a dream come true. I browsed the menu 4 times. I couldn't complain to any court! Recommendation for the kitchen! The waitresses are also very quick! All I can say is keep it up!!!!

Unfortunately there has been a lot of decline... The food is average at best and the prices are too high! Lousy, tough and very small roast meat with soggy fried potatoes €18!? The "so-called boss" was very unkempt and had little hospitality, everything was great 2 years ago - it's a shame about the beautiful location 😕

However, 1 star deduction, even if the food is very tasty, the quantity ratio to the price is exaggerated. 1 dumpling with meat and sauce? Dessert is recommended but excessively expensive for the “material used”.

Located in a wonderfully quiet location in the forest with a southeast orientation, I felt in good hands here, comfortably served with good service and delicious Thuringian cuisine. The red cabbage was a bit salty, but the dumplings were really good. Despite the modern architecture, it is very comfortably furnished. I will gladly come again. I found the prices for the food to be 1-2 euros too high.

Well, there’s a lot of room for improvement…

We had roulade and game goulash. With the game goulash, the sauce was nice and dark, but the taste was just too bitter. Also for game goulash. The roulade sauce, on the other hand, was bitter and the red cabbage coarse and overly acidic. We also received the food very quickly, which indicates that it wasn't entirely fresh.

Great architecture, shady seating and decent food. It's worth a visit

I'm a bit conflicted...the food (and also the price) in a great environment were great...without any compromises...but after more than 20 minutes in an outdoor area that was still very clearly visited (because very early Evening) I don't even have a card and the staff tells guests who need 6 seats as they leave that they can move the table and get more chairs, then I really have question marks over my head. I couldn't help but think of how, as a student, I was repeatedly chastised by the head waitress of a restaurant that was not even remotely comparable in standard because I served a cup of coffee without a tray... so please let it be an exception! Because otherwise you are great!

Overall, we were satisfied with our visit here. The food was tasty, but the price was a bit high. We were also a little surprised by the menu, as we had previously read a more extensive menu on the website. There were no classic dishes such as a simple schnitzel on the menu. We were there during the week.
