VIS-À-VIS in Trier

The location of the visavi is really great - the view of the Porta Nigra is impressive and worth a visit for that alone. Unfortunately, the service couldn't keep up during our stay. Even though the house was only half full, it took over 15 minutes for anyone to come to our table - and only after several waves. The employees seemed visibly overwhelmed and there was a lack of coordination and responsibility. It's a real shame, because with a little more attention and structure, the visavi could be a real highlight.

The ambiance here is very nice, with a view of the Porta Nigra. But the service is extremely lacking. We ordered a double whiskey (4 cl) and an Averner (also 4 cl). We ended up with two large whiskey glasses with a small puddle in them: one with the correct whiskey we ordered, and the second glass with a different whiskey, but definitely not Averner. Since the waitress disappeared into hiding, we couldn't complain right away. So we drank the whiskey we hadn't ordered. We couldn't tell from the glasses whether it was actually 4 cl, but it was probably closer to 2 cl.

A plate with cutlery and bread placed on the table, not even a glass, not even water, it's up to us to set the table. Very expensive to eat frozen potato croquettes placed on a plate, not even a sprig of salad. No dessert offered, so avoid.

Contrary to other reviews, I would like to specifically emphasize the friendliness of the staff. We've rarely been served so warmly, and we were here on two evenings. The draft beer is highly recommended, and the price is perfectly reasonable. The cheese platter, meant for one person, is generous, and we could easily eat it for two. The view directly onto the Porta Nigra is fantastic, and you can easily hear the concerts. ;)

A lovely restaurant at the Mercure Porta Nigra Hotel. The service is very friendly and the food is simply delicious. Good wines are also available.

An excellent restaurant with a terrace, located directly opposite the Porta Nigra, within the Mercure Hotel. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal, even though the prices are a bit high. We can understand that with such a beautiful setting! Very pleasant service 👍 Note that the kitchen closes at 9 pm.

We came here for coffee on June 26th. When we walked up to the first table by the door without our masks on, the waitress barked at us in an incredibly rude manner, "MASK," as if she had vomited the word at our feet. We didn't get any sugar with our coffee, but instead received a blank stare and a particularly loud "THANK YOU" as we left the bar without leaving a tip. But why would we? Absolutely terrible.

Excellent meal directly opposite the Porta Nigra. We actually eat here every time we visit Trier and enjoy the house wine from a nearby winery. For this reason we give you a full five stars.
