I grew up in Gengenbach, and the Michelangelo was always a local institution. After about eight years, I went back, and what can I say? We arrived, were looked down at, and not greeted. We were asked listlessly if we wanted a table for two or anything else. We were shown to a table upstairs, and that's where the trouble started. Unfriendly staff came to us and brought the food, which admittedly was okay, but far too expensive. All in all, it was disappointing.

Good restaurant in Gengenbach. Delicious pizzas. Moderate prices. Highly recommended 😋👍

Unfriendly Service and Small Portions We stopped by the outdoor area in the early afternoon to enjoy a drink and ice cream. We found the service very unfriendly, which significantly spoiled our first impression. The outdoor area didn't seem particularly cozy: The tables are very close together, so you inevitably touch neighboring tables. Moving tables is apparently not permitted according to the staff, which we found rather strict. The portions seemed small compared to other ice cream parlors we regularly visit, especially the "large spaghetti ice cream portion" for €7.50. For comparison: We recently received a significantly larger portion near Cologne for €6.50. We were refused card payment, which we also found unfriendly. Overall, we didn't feel welcome and will therefore probably not return there again.

We wanted a quick coffee. There were three of us. They weren't able to give us a third chair and ignored us. Too bad – they probably didn't need it… another café benefited…

The lady in charge of placing customers is very rude and dismissive.

The sun is shining, so it's time for an ice cream parlor. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality. It was a delicious ice cream on a fresh waffle. Highly recommended if you're in the area. For campers: less than 5 minutes from the Womo Stelplatz.

The pizza is large and very tasty, and we also enjoyed the pasta. There's nothing to complain about with the food. It's just a shame that the service didn't match the quality of the food. The waitresses seemed rather unfriendly—as a guest, you'd wish for a bit more warmth.

The pizza and ice cream were very good. We ordered a 15-euro menu that included a delicious pizza, a soft drink, and a scoop of ice cream. The service was very fast.

Visiting the old town of Gegenbach, we decided to try this Italian restaurant (without a reservation). It wasn't difficult to get a spot on the terrace, although we were immediately told that they don't accept bank cards and that payment had to be made in cash. The service was barely adequate, giving the impression that the staff weren't very eager to serve us. The appetizers and pizzas were good (although everything arrived together, on a small table). The beers were cold. The prices were slightly high for my taste, but that's the price of being in the center of a pretty town. On a future visit, we would almost certainly choose another restaurant.

Not recommended, terrible service. We stopped here because it was a rainy day and the baby was nervous and didn't want to sit in the stroller. We got two ice creams, taking advantage of the fact that there were tables under umbrellas and it wasn't crowded (it was empty). After getting the ice creams, the waiter came to tell me we couldn't sit at the table because table service had different prices, so I got up and stood at least to finish my ice cream, not in the rain, especially considering my small baby. The waiter approached me again to tell me we had to leave the table... since the place was empty and I wasn't stealing anyone's seat, and with a crying baby, I expected some kindness, having also eaten the ice cream. Then, for a third time, another waitress came to send us away, and I was reiterated that the ice cream is only for takeout, as indicated at the counter: indeed, it is written there, even if it is very small and completely out of sight. I then visibly complained about the lack of humanity of the people in the place... I understand it being a busy sunny day... but this wasn't the case... Afterwards, the owner came out to tell us we could stay, but by this point we were already ready to leave: an appreciated intervention but definitely belated. I must say the ice cream was decent, and that makes me even more angry. Last but not least, payment is cash only.

My daughter and I wanted to go out to eat with my two grandchildren, who were still sucking on ice cream cones. We were very rudely told to leave, let the children finish their ice cream, and then we could come back. We didn't do it and would never do it again. Absolutely outrageous! Neither friendly nor completely child-unfriendly.

A very bad experience. We were seated directly in the blazing sun, in 30-degree heat, even though we specifically asked for a spot in the shade and there were still tables available. The restaurant was infested with wasps, and we saw several customers leave because of this. Foreigners are only allowed in if they pay in cash. The manager of the terrace, a woman with long black hair, cursed and yelled at her staff in front of everyone. I also broke a glass – even though the waiters walked by dozens of times and saw it, no one replaced it. The food (pizza and pasta) was okay, but the treatment was unfortunately significantly worse.

We ordered Lasagna and Carbonara today and expected a lot from this restaurant. Suprisingly it is so bland even after we seasoned it with salt and pepper. It taste like it was frozen then overcooked. I hope next time it would be better. The staff were nice and accomodating though. Ambience was really great.

Rudeness seems to be a tradition here, judging by other reviews. We just wanted to have a drink outside at around 4:30 p.m. The lady with dark glasses was distributing menus and reservation posters on the tables. When we asked if it was possible to have just a drink, we were surly directed to the tables without reservation posters. We did that, but it was also wrong, so we had to change tables. The drinks were fine, of course; you can't go wrong. We initially wanted to ask for a table in the evening, but after this experience, we decided against it.

Worst staff I ever met in my life. Just went with my wife and daughter. They don't like tourists, which is nonsense. I believe they select the people based on some stereotypes (maybe based on the skin color, nationality, etc...). If by any reason they don't like you even after the waiter led you to a table, one old lady will try to kick you out of the place by giving any excuses like "we are not accepting cards at the moment" and in a rude way. But, the most outrageous was after we left the place, I waited a few minutes and the other people that were leaving were paying with the card. Ridiculous attitude of the staff and I don't need this treatment to eat a so-so food outside.

A wide variety of pizzas and pastas, although they also have other dishes (meat, salads). We ordered two medium pizzas (the size is a bit larger compared to Spanish sizes), very tasty and reasonably priced (not much more expensive than what you'd find in Spain). The service was a bit worse, especially when we went to pay, where they were a bit rude. But overall, a pleasant experience (7/10)

I went to Michelangelo, among other things, to review food for a culinary guide to the Ortenau region. The pizza was above average. I ordered a glass of red wine with it without asking the price, as there was no wine list, just the addition "ask for a wine from our selection." I used to be a restaurateur myself and think it's fair to inform the customer of the price or say something like "If you'd like something more upscale...", especially when it actually comes to €23 for 0.1 liters. I would have been willing to pay up to €15. However, the quality wasn't even worth that price. Unfortunately, I was far too tired to settle the matter on the spot. So I paid €40 just for a pizza and a small, mediocre glass of red wine. Just like in Zurich! What a pity!

Very unpleasant staff, very unfriendly, with bad expressions and in a hurry for us to order. We asked to change tables because the people at the table next to us were smoking and the sun was shining on us, but they told us it wasn't possible even though they had empty tables, as they said they were tables for 6 people (we were 5). We decided to get up and leave, and they rudely told my wife to go back to her country.

We visited with 4 to have dinner on the terrace. We ordered drinks, bruschetta and main dishes. We were surprised to receive the bruschettta only together with the mains as it is supposed to be an appetizer. It was our intention to enjoy it before the main dish. 3 Of us ordered pizza 'napoletana style' - it was definitely not bad but making these myself at home I expected the crust to arrive more puffy and airy, it was also very heavy when eating it. The pizzas are big (we ordered the middle size called 'Groß'), the toppings were good, the amount of mozzarella as well. It was not possible to pay by card and we didn't receive a receipt.

Hello Team Michelangelo! I wouldn't say anything if it wasn't annoying... I've visited your restaurant several times... every time, all the outdoor seats are supposedly reserved... the seat by the building wall is taken... the seat on the street, right next to the parked car, is always free... when I asked the "friendly" waitress... NO, it's reserved... but as soon as you leave the restaurant, they practically chase you... There's a seat available now... is that because I was alone... and it's "just" about making a quick buck!? Not nice... I'll enjoy my Italian cuisine at my neighbor's in the future... who, by the way, also has a better rating... no offense!

On our way to Denmark, we stopped for a rest in this pretty town. We were sure we'd have dinner here. We'd been there a few years ago and really liked it. The service is attentive and professional, the place is very cozy and carefully maintained, and the food is spectacular. A must-stop for us!

The location is perfect, but that experience is immediately ruined as soon as the waiter comes to your table, because a terribly grumpy person works there!

Food was good but their largely Italian staff seem quite averse to taking to foreign tourists, particularly if you “look foreign”. We were a group of 5 all wanting to buy ice cream but the lady insisted that as a group we could only have one taster before we ordered. That’s right, 1 taster for a group of 5 with 5 orders to place! The next day we came back to eat expecting better service but instead one waiter told us he couldn’t spend time helping us with the menu (and it wasn’t even crowded). Finally, despite having a card payment machine, plugged in and connected, they insist they can’t take card payments because the “internet doesn’t work”. When I asked why suddenly the English ability vanishes altogether! That’s right, sounds like tax evasion in the country you least expect it. Internet not working…yeah right!

They seated us on the terrace, and after waiting 15 minutes for them to come and take our order, they informed us that payment was only possible in cash. Very bad manners and behavior. I don't recommend it.

For pizza, this is the place to go in the German Black Forest. Delicious, with quality ingredients that are evident in the taste. Recommended.

A well-located restaurant on a busy street, but the welcome leaves something to be desired. The general atmosphere is cold, almost deadly. The staff is unfriendly, which really spoils the experience. We felt like we were intruding. We had to wait a long time to be served. Once seated, we were seated next to a customer with a dog, who started to complain when he saw we also had a dog. The elderly owner with glasses, who was present, said nothing and simply observed the scene without intervening. Meal-wise: Good cocktail. The shrimp and orange cocktail was very good, fresh, original, and well-presented. Very good appetizer, a very nice discovery of cured ham and olives. The pizza bread was also excellent. But it's clearly not enough to make up for the icy service. Finally, after ordering (and while quickly passing through the aisle, without even stopping), we were informed that payment by credit card was not accepted – only cash. This is unacceptable: this kind of detail should be made clear from the outset.

Not recommended. Not because of the food, which is okay in terms of value for money. But the "boss" isn't a restaurateur. You're not a guest, but a walking, replaceable wallet. Nobody wants to be that, or at least doesn't want to feel that way. And someone who refuses to give a female guest (in our group) the incorrect change with the statement "I don't make mistakes!" doesn't care about anything. You could just as well say, "No, you never get a glass of tap water with an espresso in a restaurant." It's strange that in 30 years of being a guest, I've experienced things differently, and in the last three weeks, I've received it as a matter of course in five restaurants in the area. And in such a didactic and condescending tone, you don't want to come back. It doesn't matter anyway; your wallet was pulled out once. Just without a tip. Go somewhere else.

Wir haben Freddo Espresso bestellt. Normalerweise frisch gebrühter kalter Espresso mit Eiswürfeln gemixt und mit schaumiger Textur. Für knapp zwei Zentimeter lauwarmen extrem bitteren Espresso haben wir jeder pro Glas 7 Euro bezahlt. Danach haben wir das Lokal gewechselt und haben einige Meter um die Ecke in einem Café gut und preiswert gespeist und getrunken.

We had dinner there once. Nothing special and service very chaotic. When we decided not to order a dessert the service was immediately gone. Two days later we tried the ice salon. Ordered two ice creams but we were told then that it was cash only and we only had our phones with us to pay by card. The owner/manager was very rude and despite that the two ice creams were already prepared he refused to get the machine to allow payment by card which is possible in his restaurant. We were pointed at an A4 with a lot of text where apparently somewhere was written that it was cash only. We left the ice cream on the counter and left. We still can’t believe the rude behaviour and that companies can still demand cash only ( despite that they offer in their restaurant both options). There are better restaurants and ice cream salons on the village!

We went there yesterday with our two young children and wanted ice cream, but were very disappointed with the service. We had to wait a while to see if we could sit down, and then waited a long time before we could order our ice cream. The lady (black, dark hair) often just walked past us and then took the order of our neighbor, who arrived after us. And we had two small children, one of whom was already a bit restless. I think they should pay more attention to the customers here. Prices are incredibly expensive (they're much better in Bavaria). After paying, she became friendlier (but she should have been from the start). The other neighbors were given strange looks because they only spoke English. (The lady's line: "We're in Germany, so you speak German") Excuse me??? Service was poor, friendliness only at the end, the location was nice. The food was tasty, but nothing special that would justify the high price.

Three scoops of ice cream for €5.10 is almost cheap. The quality is rather average. Actually, three stars = quite okay. However, you can't pay by card. So only two stars. Welcome to the 21st century...

The food is delicious. From the restaurant, you can watch the pizzas being prepared with fresh ingredients. The food arrived very quickly. We received friendly service. Dogs are also allowed.

Had a great evening in this restaurant. See many negative messages about the service, but we do not recognize that. Strict Italian lady has a good wind under her and is certainly not unfriendly. We found the service very attentive and the food was also great. (and a lot) best Calzone ever eaten there. All tables were occupied. And atmosphere was great! We will definitely go back there!

Very attentive and delicious food

There was a piece of plastic in my food. When we said something about it, we were completely ignored, no apologies afterwards, nothing. Bad service.

I just wanted to change a euro for the public restroom across the street, as my child urgently needed to go. I was laughed at and rudely asked to leave without any change. When I then asked if my child could use the restroom there, since I hadn't received any change, the lady again said no. The manager (a woman with black glasses) just looked at me condescendingly! Where are we, exactly? Thank you to the gentleman who simply pressed 50 cents into my hand and showed his heart! Just sad, and it starts with the service... not recommended!

We bought ice cream to go and were treated disrespectfully. The ice cream was delicious, but we really felt mistreated.

The Michelangelo in Gengenbach is a lovely place to enjoy Italian food in a relaxed atmosphere – especially outdoors in the summer. It's ideal for a date, ice cream with friends, or a wine evening. However, if you value consistently excellent service or prefer a very quiet atmosphere, you may want to consider the timing (weekdays or earlier in the day are usually more pleasant).

The food was okay, pizza is good, I ordered a steak that wasn't good, but the rest of the food was good, the service was great

We got spaghetti ice cream here. The ice cream was runny, and they didn't even respond to my request. When I asked again, they said it was too hot (22 degrees Celsius) and thanked me for my understanding, which I didn't. Absolutely not recommended

A very good pizzeria with great service! A pleasant setting in Gengenbach's old town with plenty of outdoor tables. The service is excellent: as soon as you order your wine, the glass is on your table. The pizza is delicious, as is the carpaccio! I highly recommend it!

Great service, very friendly, and absolutely delicious food😇 We first had two ice creams this afternoon (1 dark chocolate, 1 Snickers, and 1 peach-orange yogurt) - everything was great👍 Later, after our walk, we had some delicious pizzas: Vegetaria with grilled vegetables and spicy salami with onions - both super good😊 Definitely recommend💪

We wanted to ask if we could sit at a free table that was just being vacated by the guests. So we asked if we could sit at this table, there was first a cheesy "condition, come", then we asked the condition, and again a cheesy "it's reserved". I didn't expect that we would have to get the table, but that's another way to say it in a friendly way.

Four of us were there this afternoon for drinks and iced coffee. Unfortunately the service with glasses was unfriendly. We had the impression that this also had an impact on the mood of the entire staff. Too bad! Payment was only possible with cash.

We sat down at a table outside at lunchtime on a sunny day to have a drink. The location is great and there are enough seats. There was nothing wrong with the drinks either. However, the service leaves a lot to be desired. We had asked for some hot water in a cup to warm up porridge for our toddler. We then only received an unfriendly look and the answer “I have to look”. When ordering the beer I wanted to inquire about the brewery and at first only received the answer "freshly tapped" and again had the feeling that the customer was more of a burden for the service staff. At the next table, an older woman in a wheelchair, who was only accompanied by one other woman, was rudely asked to sit at a smaller table, as large groups were still coming. However, there were enough tables available and we felt sorry for the two ladies because they had to go through the hassle of moving around again. Friendly interaction with customers is almost non-existent here; if you like to be greeted with a smile here, you should go eat or drink somewhere else.

I used to really enjoy going to this restaurant, partly because of the friendly service with the glasses (boss) back then she was always warm, courteous and always had a smile on her face. However, on my last visit I was very disappointed. The same waitress (boss) seemed completely different this time. She was very unfriendly, not a single smile, hardly a word - her entire demeanor was cold and distant. I also noticed that she had lost a lot of weight, maybe she wasn't doing well health-wise or mentally, or she couldn't cope with the stress of having a lot of customers, which I'm really sorry about. Nevertheless, the atmosphere was very unpleasant. I hope that the team will feel better soon and that the usual friendliness will be felt again. Unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend a visit at the moment.

We were there on April 22, 2025 and got 4 scoops of ice cream for the two of us. Me 2 in the cup, my friend 2 in the waffle. He likes to take two waffles with it so he can take some of the balls and bite them off. This was then charged with an EXTRA €0.50. This has never happened to us before, in any ice cream parlor. What would have happened if I had also had a waffle? Next time, I'll take one and pass it on. But not there, because we won't buy ice cream there anymore.

Very interesting experience, we wanted to go out for ice cream sundaes and since we didn't have a bike lock with us, the bikes had to be parked together on the street next to us. We were told that we should park our bikes on the other side of the street. Explanations were not accepted. Then go to the market and get an ice cream to go, next mistake. I only had a €200 note and a credit card in my pocket. Unfortunately neither is desired. Unfortunately I had already ordered the ice cream scoops, luckily my wife had found some change in her backpack otherwise we would have had to do the washing up. It was my last visit there, people approach you so arrogantly and rudely, you don't need that!!

Wir haben drei Mittagessen bestellt und wurden von einer älteren Servicekraft mit schwarzer Brille gefragt, ob wir den Salat „zusätzlich“ oder „als Mittagessen“ möchten. Da mir der Unterschied nicht ganz klar war, entschied ich mich für die zusätzliche Variante. Im Nachhinein stellte sich heraus, dass dies zu einem Aufpreis von 2 € führte – gleichzeitig fehlten jedoch ein Getränk und eine Kugel Eis, die bei der Mittagskarte normalerweise inbegriffen sind. Auf Nachfrage meinte die Dame lediglich: „Da habe ich nicht dran gedacht …“ Der Salat für 16 € war enttäuschend: ohne erkennbare Gewürze, ohne Soße und mit welk wirkenden Blättern. Als wir dies ansprachen, wurde der Teller wortlos mitgenommen und kam nach etwa fünf Minuten leicht verändert zurück – leider weiterhin ohne nennenswerte Verbesserung. Im Salat befand sich zudem ein undefinierbares Stück, das auch von der jüngeren Servicekraft nicht identifiziert werden konnte. Unsere Bitte, die Küchenleitung oder Chefin zu fragen, wurde ignoriert – eine Rückmeldung erhielten wir nicht. Als ich schließlich die Rechnung hinterfragte, reagierte die ältere Dame ausweichend. Auf meine Bitte, mit einer verantwortlichen Person zu sprechen, sagte sie, es sei niemand da. Eine andere Mitarbeiterin deutete jedoch auf sie selbst – offenbar wollte sie ihre Zuständigkeit nicht zugeben. Insgesamt wirkte das Personal wenig motiviert und nicht besonders gastfreundlich. Die einzige positive Ausnahme war die jüngste im Team, die zumindest bemüht war – auch wenn man ihr ansah, dass sie sich im Team nicht wohlfühlte. Die bereits auf dieser Plattform erwähnte Kritik am Service können wir voll bestätigen. Das Essen war in Ordnung, aber insgesamt fade und kaum gewürzt. Fazit: Wir können dieses Restaurant leider nicht weiterempfehlen. Hier ist in Service, Kommunikation und Qualität deutlich Luft nach oben.

It was a very nice margherita and the prices were normal

Unfriendly service. The pizza is completely overpriced for the price. The taste is substandard. The advertised "wood-fired oven" on the street is actually gas-fired (clearly visible). (Is that a scam?) Overall, the atmosphere is a bit like a train station. I won't be coming back.

As a customer you have the feeling that you are being a nuisance. Terribly unfriendly service, but the food is good. The bottom line is that everyone has to know for themselves whether they want to use the service

The ice cream was excellent, lots of choice and great flavors. The friendliness of the lady with the black glasses was absolutely disappointing. I've never experienced anything so unfriendly in the catering industry. If this is a salaried waitress, they should definitely be part of the training. If it is the boss, she is setting a very good example.

When we walked in, there was a lady at the entrance, and we didn't know if she was part of the staff or not. After a short wait, she said someone would be there to seat us. We were seated at a single table that had been pushed together. There were already people sitting right next to us, even though there were other, "freer" seats that also remained empty. The ambiance is quite nice. A very comfortable leather couch with colorful accents. The food was okay: Bruschetta was a bit bland, the lasagna was also a bit bland and tastes better at home. The pizza was good, but even a small pizza is significantly more substantial than a large pizza plate. The staff wasn't so nice: I tried a SMALL pizza with two types of salami. I liked one half, the other not so much. In the end, there was some of the not-so-tasty side left over (about 1/5 of the pizza). Since we didn't have a suitable refrigerator at the hotel, I didn't want to take the pizza with me. I was definitely full. When the employee came to clear the table, he asked four times if the pizza should be wrapped. I answered "No." As he was clearing the table, he (meaningfully) said, "And other people are starving." I also think throwing food away is stupid and try to avoid it. Unfortunately, in this case, it didn't make sense to take the leftovers with me. I find the statement offensive and very inappropriate. We won't be visiting or recommending the restaurant again.

Very nice place and well located. Delicious pizza and pasta and very well served. Unfortunately the service left something to be desired due to the “bad mood” of the attendant, apparently a “boss” at the place.

Ich komme aus der Gastronomie. Ein katastrophaler Service. An Unfreundlichkeit wohl schwer zu überbieten. Anschreien der Gäste/ von Menschen, ist ein No go. Pizza ist richtig gut. Doch nicht so gut, dass wir nochmal kommen. Und da sind wir nicht die Einzigen, die das so sehen.

Ordered cake, cappuccino, ice cream and aperitif here. I have to say I've eaten something better. Cake was just sweet, ice cream was fine, aperitif way too much water. Conditions go down to the basement to laugh. That's why there were hardly any tips. Otherwise we always have 5 euros in it. Too bad.

Good quality, definitely too expensive for such poor service. The service is unfriendly and children also seem unwelcome. It doesn't have to happen again, you only win through a good location. I can't understand the 4.4 star rating

Today there were four of us as a family, 2 children and a couple. We wanted to eat ice cream in the restaurant at the entrance to the restaurant, we didn't know whether it was open or whether we were allowed in. The staff was unfriendly especially the lady with glasses in black. No greetings. They just put the cards down for us at the table. When I said we wanted the number one card, she simply took the menu away again with a strange look. The young girl was nice and brought us the first ticket. Children's ice cream with 2 scoops of snowman 6.50. Euro. Also unfriendly when paying. Don't come back.

If you expect friendly service, this is not the place to be.

The pizza tasted like a soaked cardboard top. Tossed the pizzas in the trash.

Unfortunately it was just disappointing. Zero points for service After 40 minutes we were able to place the order. After another 40 minutes we received a half burnt dry pizza that didn't deserve to be called a pizza. After consulting with the overworked waitress, we were informed that the edge of the pizza would not be eaten anyway!!!! Our request for a glass of wine was also denied. We should have a bottle of wine. It's a shame that the service and standard has fallen so far. We actually always enjoyed going there, as the pizzas were always good. We no longer visit this pizzeria and do not recommend it to others.

The Michelangelo is a well-run Italian pizzeria.. the menu is large and ticks all your boxes! I have been enjoying the atmosphere at Michelangelo and Chef Massimo and his friendly staff for years! If someone wants to eat well, then go to Michelangelo.

Great shop with really delicious food! We were told a lot about the different pizzas because we couldn't decide. The waiter was a little confused and had forgotten a drink, but the advice was really great. The pizzas are really first class! Very tasty and highly recommended.
