Unfortunately disappointing – expensive and poor quality. The goulash soup was cold, the currywurst was cooked in the frying oil from the fries and still wasn't cooked through. Charging €12 for this dish and calling it a "giant currywurst" is, in my opinion, completely unreasonable. The hall itself seems very dated – broken windows and a style more reminiscent of an old youth hostel, albeit without the nostalgic charm. My conclusion: Save your money, bring a sandwich instead, and steer clear of this place.

Unfortunately, you can only shake your head at this place. The place is in an extremely unsanitary state, and the ambiance is more reminiscent of a run-down dive – you sit on simple beer benches, while the prices are on par with a five-star restaurant. Small dogs are also not allowed, which is particularly incomprehensible considering that homeless people are apparently sleeping in the lobby and the place smells strongly of urine. A beer costs a whopping €5.50, even though the retail price could hardly be €1. A simple currywurst with a few fries costs over €10 – a pricing policy that can only be described as a rip-off. All in all, a sad picture – both in terms of the condition of the place and the way the customers are treated.

Delicious pea soup, the service at the counter was very friendly and helpful. However, it had more of a cafeteria vibe. But nothing too crazy… it has its charm, too.

Unfortunately, it was very disappointing for us. Fries with a sausage, a bit of ketchup, and a Coke for €15. The employee was unfortunately quite unfriendly. The restrooms were dirty, and you pay €1 for that.

You can't expect anything more than a terrible cafeteria. Unappetizing food. Just a slapdash, you can even tap your own beer. All four meals (bratwurst with fries, bockwurst with potato salad) were cold. €61. Plus, the wait times were extremely long. No thanks.

We had two coffees and cakes, and later a portion of fries. Everything tasted very good. The staff was very friendly. Price-wise, I think the self-service restaurant is a bit overpriced.

Considering that you don't have to bother with guests, who simply walk to the sole provider and are then literally taken by train right to the door, the selection and value for money are abysmal. The main thing is that the signs indicating that you're not allowed to eat anything you've brought with you are large enough. You could take a leaf out of the book from the cuisine of alpine huts and, in general, the traditions of many mountain inns, huts, and alpine pastures. It was truly disappointing.

Instant coffee should be banned. The ultimate way to let your guests know they're not welcome.

We thought the food was absolutely OK. The pea soup with sausage was delicious, and my solyanka was good, too. The cake was good, too. In the end, we paid 15-17 euros per person for the main meal, cake, and a drink. We felt it was good value for money. The staff were friendly, too. However, the hall isn't really that nice; it's more reminiscent of a gymnasium. In general, the Brocken would benefit from a bit more ambiance in the facilities. The worst thing, though, as a few have already mentioned, were the toilets. I have no idea if it's standing water, but you go down the stairs and you're met with such a stench that it almost comes back up. Sorry, but this shouldn't be happening. Some kind of solution needs to be found.

Cafeteria food at expensive prices

According to media reports, even the proprietor isn't even interested in continuing. This lack of enthusiasm is a hallmark of the place, which the operator seems to be trying to make bearable by charging ridiculous prices for what's on offer. It's best to bring a snack in your backpack.

The landlord roars past in a Smart at such a speed that it was absolutely outrageous. Please slow down. Dogs aren't allowed in this hall!!! I don't understand why. So many hikers have dogs 🐕, and you're supposed to stay outside? This hall is so uncomfortable. The stairs to the restroom smelled so bad, it was disgusting. Brocken, yes, never again!

UPDATE August 2025: Best news for the Harz region! The Brocken Innkeeper is finally giving up. Allegedly due to a lack of staff... Whatever! Things can only get better. The district, as the owner of the Brockenspitze, should carefully consider who they choose as their successor. Hopefully, hiking up the Brocken will then be enjoyable again, both in culinary and gastronomic terms! 😌 The worst thing you can understand about gastronomy... Never experienced such disgusting tourist rip-offs and lack of enthusiasm. Putting a self-service restaurant up there that tries to make it clear to its guests with every inch that "YOU are NOT welcome here, but your money is" is a real feat! As for the gastronomic expertise of the staff, one can say: There is no expertise there! Regarding the quality of the food and drinks, it should be mentioned: There is no quality up there, just overpriced crap!! If only they would at least make an effort with the prices, but nope. True to the motto, stupid tourists only come once anyway, so this place doesn't have to be anything special... This isn't a true showcase for the Harz region. I have no idea whether it's leased up there or actually belongs to this "Brockenwirt." In any case, someone who knows something about gastronomy, hospitality, and quality urgently needs to come here...! They don't even accept card payments there, absolutely crazy if they're even funding these people's salaries... This place is simply awful!

It's understandable that it's crowded here, and of course the prices are high. Everything has to be carted up here, no matter what. But the view and the Brocken's unique coziness make up for everything.

Unfortunately, it closed today at 3 p.m. While we understand the lack of staff, it's a disgrace for a tourist attraction like the Brocken. Otherwise, the ambiance is rustic, fitting for the surroundings.

The Brocken Hotel's tourist hall is a functional self-service area for hungry hikers on the Brocken. Portions are rather pricey, and the atmosphere is reminiscent of a cafeteria—practical but lacking in flair. Positive aspects include the hot food, such as pea soup, and the beer garden with a view.

Classic tourist trap - bad food, served with sour faces at an overpriced price, but with two hungry teenagers who have walked 6 km against their will in steep terrain, you have to reach for your wallet.

On July 13, 2025, my partner and I only went to the restaurant for lunch because we were on a day trip to the Brocken. The food was not appetizing and very expensive at €40.80. I was charged for two dishes and my partner for one even though I only had one. I had a schnitzel with a potato and mushroom sauce - how are those two dishes? The employee barely spoke German and every move was too much. Unfortunately, we didn't feel well after the meal - my partner and I were nauseous and got diarrhea. We were there 9 years ago and it was so delicious. And now I simply can't recommend it anymore - what a shame!

The food was an absolute disaster. Zero taste, worse than the worst student cafeteria. And then the price. The presentation, tables, etc., were also very poor and basic, and all at this price level. Far too expensive for the quality! The cashier was nice and helpful.

Horrible food for the price. The currywurst for 12 euros was already shriveled, and the schnitzel for 18 euros was a joke.

One can only agree with the previous speakers

Absolutely not recommended. The fries are cold and have been sitting for at least 30 minutes. The currywurst tastes like nothing. It's a good thing they at least had curry powder. The staff seems stressed even though it's quiet, and they're unfriendly to boot. The authentic Thuringian bratwurst is drowning in grease.

We treated ourselves to a little something in the Brockenwirt beer garden, which was pretty expensive. A lukewarm Bockwurst cost over €5, and the shandy also cost €5. Holy cow, the drinks are brought up here by helicopter. Our needs are covered for now.

Half a chicken with fries for €16.90 was really expensive. The fries were greasy and soggy, the chicken was from yesterday and bone dry. You really feel like you're being ripped off here; they don't rely on regular customers, and it's obvious.

The mountain can't be blamed for this, because I think the hiking trail up is worth seeing from every angle. Once you get to the top, you expect a pleasant atmosphere, as the old steam locomotive is already passing you on the way up 🤗 Instead, you end up in a canteen that only exists to serve people and nothing else. You won't find delicious food with a beautiful view here. It's sad for such a great location to hold such a mess here. The restrooms are better in every stadium; after you beat the turnstile at the top with a euro, you enter the stalactite cave 🤮

Unfortunately, the restaurant upstairs didn't impress me. The food is just about acceptable in terms of price, but the taste isn't very appealing – more like edible. I definitely recommend bringing your own sandwiches or snacks and skipping the restaurant. Service is lacking, as there's only a simple food counter. While you can still order until shortly before closing, you're then quickly urged to leave – understandable for the staff, but not very inviting for guests. The furnishings are also showing their age: the chairs and tables look old and poorly maintained. The changing table is particularly impractical, mounted so low that it hurts your back more than it helps. Conclusion: Okay for a rest stop with provisions you've brought along – in my opinion, the visit isn't worth it for the food itself.

The food was unappealing. The price was equally unappealing. There were tons of insects flying around outside, and they liked to fly onto the food. But they tasted better than the fries.

We chose this snack bar as a stopover on our hike. It had a completely overcrowded train station atmosphere. Since we had a dog with us, we were only allowed to eat at the tables in the lobby, which was actually the most pleasant seating area with some peace and quiet. The food was of poor snack standard and extremely overpriced. The staff all seemed very annoyed. No restroom available! The one is outside about 150 meters away and can only be paid for with €1! They really need to upgrade to card payments!

Expensive prices. The food wasn't a feast for the eyes. On top of that, the portion of fries with the currywurst was very small. The fries were very dark. In the future, I'll pack a chocolate bar rather than eat there after a hike.

After a beautiful hike to the Brocken, we wanted to stop at the Tourist Hall. The hall itself is more functional than cozy, but that would have been fine. Unfortunately, the food was a disappointment: The currywurst was obviously cooked in a deep fryer – which completely ruined my appetite for sausages. The fries were lukewarm and rather bland. The pea soup was very thin and seemed to have been heavily diluted with water. The potato salad tasted like it had been made from a bucket. Overall, unfortunately, it wasn't a culinary experience. Perhaps okay for a quick snack, but anyone expecting something more will be disappointed.

Overpriced food and drinks and very unfriendly service

The reviews already show: tourist trap. Extremely unfriendly staff and - one almost has to say “of course” - outrageous prices: €4 per water 0.5l. There is no need to say more.

The ambience is that of a canteen from the 80s. The location has a lot of potential for a nice restaurant with contemporary food.

The food tastes good. But I think 12 euros for a currywurst is pretty steep. And if you then have to pay 1 euro for the toilet, I think it's cheeky. By the way, you have to have change for the barrier on the toilet. Otherwise you'll queue for nothing.

We were initially skeptical due to the negative reviews. However, after 2 hours of hiking we were really hungry, so we decided to eat. I have to say, I am very positively surprised. Excellent soup in an old hall that undoubtedly has historical significance. The food is all prepared and served, so you don't know how long it will take to cook.

Faust on the Brocken was a truly successful event. Unfortunately, the Mephisto meal tasted like pea soup into which the pork goulash had accidentally fallen and then been boiled. I'd say the atmosphere was like that of a cafeteria. A simple goulash soup, perhaps even venison from the Harz Mountains, would have been a real alternative and would certainly have been better received by the guests.

Unfortunately very disappointed with this restaurant We were looking forward to fries and currywurst after the long climb and were unfortunately extremely disappointed here. The schnitzel, currywurst and fries were unfortunately served cold and not very fresh. Unfortunately the drinks were only lukewarm in the bottles. We paid almost 45€ for 2 drinks, food and a cheesecake... way too expensive for this low quality.

In our opinion, the food was as good as the location. Everything is geared towards the canteen. The prices for the dishes were also very high. Ok, you can't expect anything fresh on the chunk.

Went to the Brocken today (February 17, 2025) in great weather. In contrast to the food, that was a real highlight. I ordered schnitzel with fries and was happy because the fries were freshly made. Unfortunately, I was happy too soon. The fries were undercooked and the breading of the schnitzel was totally soft and mushy. The self-tapped cola was non-carbonated. The food there has been like that for years and you can read that in the other reviews. But the owner doesn't seem to care. Really a shame. I can only advise everyone to take a slice of bread with them.

Great solution if you want to serve heavy tourist crowds. And then it's on a mountain. Come over every year to eat the pea soup! It's mandatory for us up there.

A classic tourist rip-off. Completely overpriced, poorly frozen food. Calling this canteen food would be an insult to any canteen. The argument of poor accessibility doesn't hold water either; there's a road all the way to the top, meaning the costs are only minimally higher. Compared to Austrian mountain huts, where there's really only a cable car or something similar, this is outrageous.

Simple and quick meals to eat on site. The ambiance is just as peaceful as it was many years ago, rather rustic.

I have never seen or experienced anything so bad with the dog we had to sit in the anteroom like in a transition camp half chicken with fries 16.90 really amazing but the reviews don't harm the shop there are always new people coming up

Unfortunately, there isn't much choice on the Brocken, but we were also disappointed with the food we got there. The fries were bland, the mushroom sauce - no comment, the schnitzel was okay. We also had pea soup (a disappointment) and currywurst - also not tasty - plus ridiculously expensive drinks. There isn't even any frozen vegetables on the side. The atmosphere screams "sad GDR canteen." We wouldn't eat there again, but with the kids, we were dependent on a "restaurant" for a hot lunch and somewhere to sit.

€55 per trip is already steep, but the train was still full. Then again typically German, restaurants closed today, two full wagons from Englend were thrilled. Keep it up! Absolutely disgusting, you aren't informed about it in any way when you drive off...

Canteen food at upscale restaurant prices - bizarre!

So first of all: There are dishes that are good to eat, like currywurst and fries or pea soup with or without sausages. I wouldn't recommend frozen cakes or frozen schnitzel, for example, but of course, nothing is handmade there. It's self-service, and prices are hefty, which, despite the location, is very hefty for the quality. Especially in good weather, if you don't need to go inside to warm up, I would always recommend bringing something to go and not eating there. But in an emergency, it's fine—definitely no more, but also no less.

Extremely bad food. Ordered Thuringian Bratwurst but got a Bockwurst with lukewarm fries. In the guest hall there are more prohibitory signs than food and the ambience is somewhere between a fast food restaurant and a canteen. Absolutely not recommended.

Group dinner without atmosphere and serving only "gulash suppe" with bread. The food was reasonably good, the rest was without atmosphere and very noisy.

Canteen. Currywurst with fries are underground... the perceived meat content was probably 10%. Is the cheapest industrial product. Solyanka, on the other hand, is better, but I've eaten better here.

There really isn't anything positive to mention here. You have to have the audacity to charge such prices for such food.

I was here on October 6th. The conclusion at the beginning. If you can avoid it, you shouldn't eat here. We ordered half a chicken with fries for just under €17 and a currywurst with fries (€12?). The chicken had zero flavor, literally zero. Even a customer's palate couldn't detect any taste. The currywurst has a rubber shell. The fries weren't great, but unfortunately they were the highlight alongside the mayo. There is one star because you can take enough mayo for free and the second star for the large selection of dishes. The price-performance ratio doesn't fit in any way. In the Alps and Pyrenees, where some of the food is brought by helicopter, it is better and cheaper. It's better to bring some food with you and then go to the restaurant in the valley. It's a shame when a monopoly is exploited like this.

Food full of failure. Finally we wanted to eat something. Paid €19.90 for 2 bratwursts, a beer and a coffee. After handing over €20, I waited for my change. When I asked where my 10 cents were, they were thrown on the counter with the answer "that doesn't make the cabbage any fat anymore" in an unfriendly manner to the value of 10. It was purely a matter of principle for me! I would recommend everyone to take something to eat with them. Apparently the Brockenwirt is doing too well!

You probably wouldn't expect star cuisine on the Brocken. The food was okay and you can't go wrong with the classics. After all, drinks and food have to go up the mountain, whatever the wind and weather. Now one or two euros are added. It's best to inform yourself and decide for yourself. After numerous rip-offs in the Harz Mountains, we were looking forward to the Brocken, even though we hadn't had much hope for improvement, given the €55 per person for the trip. And then this: the main hall was closed, and we were only getting pretzels and sausage soups, and at exorbitant prices (pretzel 3.40; sausage soup 8.30!). The quality wasn't great either. We prefer canned food. If the bark beetle doesn't wipe out the Harz Mountains, then this hospitality on the Brocken will.

I was on the Brocken on Saturday morning and wanted to give them one last chance. However, shortly after 10 a.m., I was turned away in the most unfriendly manner at the kiosk at the train station. There were two employees inside, both with a beer in their hand. When I asked if they were open (the sales window was open), they rudely replied, "We haven't even had breakfast yet and we're supposed to be selling something?" The last time I was a paying customer at their place in the winter (in the Göthesaal, which is more like a cafeteria), dirty plates were simply wiped by hand, and then the food was served... The schnitzel with fries was completely overpriced for the quality; it wouldn't have even been worth €10. Do you actually read your Google reviews? I'm definitely not the only one with such experiences... But what I'm actually getting at is that you're exploiting your monopoly position on the Brocken to the maximum; the only thing that matters is "selling cheap food with maximum profit" (excuse the word "cheap food," but it's ultimately nothing else). If you had competition on the Brocken, you would immediately lose all your customers with this policy. As a resident of Saxony-Anhalt, it's simply embarrassing to look at the gastronomic offerings on the Brocken; it's anti-advertising for the Brocken and the entire Harz region. I'm surprised the city of Wernigerode hasn't intervened yet. But the stupid tourists still come. I've given up on the likelihood of anything changing in your business, but maybe miracles still happen...

I understand that because you're on the Brocken, they raise the prices a bit compared to the rest, but that's extortionate. And then there's the worst currywurst I've ever had. I'll never eat here again. I won't say much about the service; it's just like a canteen. You take a pretzel and fill up everything except for hot dishes, and someone stands there and distributes them. The ambiance, well, okay. Inside, it looks like a boring canteen. Maybe some people like that kind of thing, but I don't like it. The noise level is also very loud with lots of people. Just like a canteen. Unfortunately, every canteen I've been to so far has had better food quality (and prices!!) Bring yourself a bar or sandwich and when you get back down from the Brocken, go to a nice restaurant in the town or somewhere.

Like many other visitors, I can only say that the prices are very high and do not correspond to the quality and taste. Currywurst fries €12.10...but you have to take your own tray away. The lady at the counter was friendly, there was nothing to complain about. The staff certainly have a hard time when the landlord charges astronomical prices for poor quality when there are no competitors. The snack bar at the train station has the same prices. And yes, it has to be a bit more expensive; the walk up to the Brocken is arduous, but the walk to Sylt, Heligoland, Halligen, etc. is certainly not. But one Brocken is enough. Why do restaurants always complain? I think visitors would appreciate it if they didn't necessarily sell the cheapest frozen fries and the best quality meat, and presented it a bit nicer. Then many people, like me, would pay €12.10 for currywurst fries when they were fasting and without complaining. But as long as the steam locomotives spit us tourists out on the Brocken nothing will change.

I can give it full marks. The pea soup was fantastic, with a freshly tapped beer to go with it. A friendly, witty bartender, and the weather was fantastic, so we could enjoy everything outside. Perfect.

After a climb up the Brocken by bike, we had delicious food, none, there was pea soup outside (from a 10 kilo bag), BoWo okay, at least you could sit inside. Lack of staff ☹️I can't hear it anymore. People, sit down in the restaurant and leave the Bemme at home.

Oh my god that was a failure... The food was expensive and really terrible. Pea soup with bockwurst was worse than the one from the can... The bratwurst didn't taste good at all, it was completely over-seasoned and dry. It had probably been on the grill for a long time, just like the currywurst. In addition, the bad atmosphere and the not particularly motivated employees lead me to only give one star. Axo and toilets should also cost money? Why?
