The Mine in Essen

Not suitable for groups. Maximum for 2 people. Absolutely long waiting times (30min) plus. Cold and partly raw food, incompetent staff and unfriendly boss. Worst restaurant I've ever been to. Then it's better to go to McDonald's.

This restaurant is the nadir of gastronomy. Waiting time for service: 10 minutes. Afterwards waiting time for drinks: 15 minutes. After another 45 minutes and multiple requests, the food came. Waited well over an hour for the food, and when asked, the service became very unfriendly. And it didn't really taste good either. Incredibly bad restaurant.

Yesterday, Saturday, Zollverein again. But then: catastrophic service in the "Mine", completely overpriced restaurant. The taste of the food is always debatable, but the quality seemed OK. From there, it's all chaos. The highlight: The food came after a long wait, but there was no cutlery anywhere (we then went looking for it ourselves), even after being asked, it still took 5 minutes, after which half of the food was cold. Even paying was only possible on the third attempt. If you have booked a tour that you should start on time, things get really tight (the organization and friendliness of ticket collection, ordered by phone, is a topic in itself). Hence no tip. Conclusion: Zollverein is rushing downwards as quickly as the conveyor system once did. Too bad.

When it's full you have to wait up to 45 minutes for drinks and 70 for food. Incredibly slow service.

We had a spontaneous meal there today. I initially thought it was just a snack bar. But that wasn't the case. We came across a great restaurant, with great food and friendly staff. The portions were good and it was very tasty!!! We'll come back when we're at the mine again.

Very bad service. At least I didn't get any food. The owner had my factual and detailed review deleted. That alone speaks volumes.

Very special place, directly opposite the Ruhr Museum and perfect to end the day after a long sightseeing tour. Very modern and stylish interior, with a large seating area outside. Absolutely great and diverse menu. Special requests are happy to be accommodated and the food is not only tasty but also pleasing to the eye. Great restaurant and highly recommended.

The atmosphere is really very appealing. We were there on a Sunday during the fall holidays and it was well attended. The service often took a long time and gave the impression of being stressed. My husband and I both ordered currywurst with fries for €11.90. It was obvious that my husband's portion was significantly larger than mine (it's about the amount of fries). At the next table the “women’s portion” was also significantly smaller. This should be reconsidered because you still pay the full price. Therefore there was no tip and there was no farewell from the staff. The taste of the food is debatable. It's all a matter of taste.

I've been here for the umpteenth time with friends and have never left a review, which I'm happy to do now. There were eight of us there today and we were all impressed by the great brunch, the friendly staff and their friendliness. 👍👍 A great quality of the meat, fish etc. 👌 Despite the busy restaurant, the drinks were all delivered very quickly. Chapeau. Louis the restaurant manager and Gülcan the boss always came to the tables in between to ask if everything was ok, that's how you feel comfortable.!! We all left the restaurant very satisfied and well-fed. Therefore.....See you soon.

However, they closed very early outside, but I just managed to get a little something.

We were with a small group in the so-called Event location. Cold, undecorated and uncomfortable hall with train station flair. It took 90 minutes until the first pepper sauce was served with the steak...unfortunately it was already cold. Another half hour until the steaks were served...subterranean. Everything is served at a pig's gallop with a serving trolley at canteen level. Unfortunately I still have to give it one star (why are there no negative stars?). Never again, promise.

After the two-star rating came a lot of mail (there is now one star less ‎😛). It is alleged that I am guilty of defamation. When I tried to get in touch to clarify the matter (if necessary before the arbitration board), nothing came up. It seems to me that the main thing here is trying to get rid of negative reviews. But to accuse dissatisfied guests of a crime is, in my opinion, strong language. Like many others, I was only disappointed by the long waiting times, the somewhat rough service, but above all that you can only pay in cash here. And that the service staff doesn't point out that there's an ATM just around the corner. None of it was particularly nasty, or offensive, or anything. The experience in the restaurant itself wasn't particularly bad either. Hence 2 stars back then. Now just one more.

I celebrated a big birthday at The Mine with friends and family and rented the entire place for it. It was a truly unforgettable evening. The buffet was terrific, my guests were all thrilled without exception. The service was super nice and that applies to everyone who looked after us that evening. Following a recommendation from The Mine, we had a fantastic mix of live music and DJ, which meant that the mood was immediately at “100”. But it wasn't just the evening itself that was beautiful. The preparation together with the team from The Mine was extremely pleasant! If I had to describe what my birthday at The Mine was like in one word, here it is: Perfect!

Absolutely catastrophic and unable to learn It was reserved for a birthday for 14 adults plus a child and dog. Spontaneously two people weren't there, which was good because there was only room for 12 people. The table was not set. The tapas for the pre-ordered starter were not on plates as requested but in small bowls. Ordered drinks were forgotten. For more than an hour neither new drinks nor the main course were taken away. Then they wanted to order The Mine platters (meat and fish) for two. (The platters contain everything that you can order individually as dishes) At first they said you couldn't order the platters, you had to take individual dishes. After you asked to ask the boss again, it suddenly worked. After a long time the food arrived, the meat was cold, the burger we ordered was half raw (was returned, the new one came cold after a long wait but it was done) sauces and grilled vegetables were also cold. The side salad we ordered didn't come after we pointed it out several times. A sauce was returned with the request that a warm sauce be served. After about 15 minutes we pointed out that the sauce was still missing, and it came back to the table cold. After asking the boss to come and have a chat, the waiters disappeared for a while, but the boss never came. The same thing at the next table. They waited 3 hours for their food, and the starter and main course arrived at the same time. Some of the guests cleared their tables themselves to get some space. Unfortunately, the staff was absolutely unmotivated right from the start. Not recommended.

Had ordered a table for 10 people, 4:15 p.m. Came in at 4:06 p.m. and was told it would take another 10 minutes, even though not all the tables were occupied. The waitresses really weren't friendly, we had to wait about 30 minutes until we could order (drinks even then). Half of the group received their food at some point, the other half only when the first ones were already finished! Including 2 small children. In between there is no question as to whether you would like to order something else, whether you are supplied with drinks…. You were simply ignored. Many dishes, the pasta and salads were probably quite good, but the burger and the tapas were at best snack level. We didn't feel welcome there at all. Never again!

Was there on Sunday (October 6th, 2024) for the breakfast/brunch buffet... Unfortunately totally disappointing. The service was completely overwhelmed. We've been told several times that pretty much everything is empty, just 30 minutes after opening. Scrambled eggs were refilled after an hour... Tomato Mozzarella remained empty until the end... The brunch was only lukewarm when it was served, even though everything was supposed to be freshly prepared... The atmosphere for it is nice.

I can't say anything about the food because we didn't eat anything, just drank. The ambience is very nice but a huge minus point is that you can only pay with a card if you spend 10 euros or more.... why... is not understandable.. ..it's not written anywhere...and the service also lectures the non-German speaking guests, really not a good host quality

We booked a table yesterday especially because of the Zechenfest We were kindly taken upstairs to the event room There was already a larger group in the room and other tables who were also waiting After half an hour in which we weren't even asked for drinks, we left again Why are reservations accepted on a day like this when almost all of the staff are in the lower area?

The worst currywurst ever. Almost no curry powder on the sausage. We were asked by the landlord if everything was OK. When I answered whether he could bring some more curry, he just looked at me xxxxx and disappeared. No curry came. When regular guests at the next table asked, he immediately brought another bowl of mayo. That's the way it is

We were there as a group (60 people) on a Friday. The food (no variation, just burgers & fries) had been ordered days in advance, as our time between the program items (company outing) was limited. This was explicitly discussed with the employees in advance. When we arrived, we again pointed out that we only had 90 minutes on site. We waited about 20 minutes for drinks and then got our food after 75 minutes (!). Everything tasted good and was satisfactory, but the timing was simply disappointing, so we arrived way too late for the next item on the program. We would have expected that the food would be served immediately upon arrival, as everything had already been prepared and could be planned. Too bad!

Nice place, the food was good! Ordered dessert, didn't come, when asked we were told we'd bring it straight away, unfortunately it wasn't brought at all. Requested a bill several times, finally got up and went to the counter to pay the bill!

It was really great to sit there comfortably after a tour, which just made me very sad. There was no sauder in Essen at a mine, all the kiosks on the site sold it and unfortunately there was no one to eat :-( otherwise great

We celebrated our wedding in *The Mine* at the Zollverein Coal Mine and were completely thrilled!!! The location is simply fantastic and the ambience is incomparable. The staff was extremely committed, attentive and implemented our every wish immediately. The kitchen is particularly noteworthy - the food was not only delicious, but an absolute highlight that our guests will rave about for a long time. The decoration was also implemented exactly as we imagined. The planning was uncomplicated from the start and was supported by an extremely professional team, as was the on-site service. The child-friendliness was particularly pleasing – our little guests also felt completely at home. We will definitely be back and have decided to eat there every year on our wedding anniversary from now on. Unreserved recommendation!"

Very tasty, the portion could have been a little larger. Unfortunately, after the first order, which went well, the service became very poor - even though the store was getting emptier.

I have to say that I rarely see a restaurant where the walls aren't specially painted. The concrete look gives the whole thing a special charm. The wooden tables are also very nice. Directly next to the coal works. The food was super tasty, even if it took a while to arrive. The staff is nice and in general you can say that it is a restaurant where you can eat more than once. 👍

Fries are served cold. Service extremely slow. Ambience works.

We were there as a group of around 20 people. Unfortunately, we were only served when everyone was there, and then rather rarely. We had ordered tapas, which unfortunately were all served at the same time and were all cold. I had the impression that a large part of the food was convenience products, potatoes, baked bread, and unfortunately also aioli. Since competitors in the immediate area offer better service and food, I will stay at this one visit to the mine...

Experienced the worst service of the year

Apparently the only restaurant open after 6 p.m. Without registering we had to sit outside because everything inside was full. Unfortunately it was very cold. I would have liked pillows and blankets on the wooden benches. We had a burger and vegetables. The vegetable pan for €16.90 was totally overcooked and made without any finesse. Taste bland. The burger for €16.90 was also not recommended as it was also small and tasted bland. No onions, no ketchup, nothing that underlines the taste of the little melted cheese and the patty. Overall, everything is expensive. Staff was very friendly and attentive.

Das war nichts. Laut streitendes Personal in der Küche. Tische werden laut quietschen durch das Lokal geschoben. Bedienung vermeidet Augen Kontakt, schwer etwas zu bestellen. Vorspeise Calamaris TK Ware, aussen und innen matschig. Bandnudeln mit Rinderfilet Streifen ohne Pepp, nur mi Sahne gebunden, dafür 20 Euro, na ja. Mein Hauptgericht völlig vergessen, Besteck abgeräumt ohne Nachfrage. Nicht zu empfehlen.

Really worth a visit. Very nice and attentive service, great ambience and excellent food. Absolutely recommended. Coffee also tastes great. We reserved in advance - I think it's recommended. There are enough parking spaces.

No special food itself, I had the mineburger which was reasonable but not really a “German” portion My wife had salmon but it was fried too dry. The side plate was also little It wasn't busy but we had to wait a long time After the drink and food, no one from the staff asked if the taste was satisfactory or if you wanted anything else. After a long tour of the mine site, we went to this restaurant. After the colliery ambience of the museum, the atmosphere was much cleaner and in a certain way more well-behaved and, in terms of design, not quite as sophisticated as the industrially raw colliery area and museum. The staff was very approachable, relaxed and easygoing, which was very nice. The burger was extremely good!! Normally, I think burgers tend to taste a bit the same everywhere, but this one had something special. The bread was good, the salad was fresh and the overall combination was very successful. The food was great, as was the service, but the ambience could have had a bit more energy.

Food was ok. Unfortunately service was very bad. At over 30°C we had to wait a long time until we were noticed by the waitress (it wasn't full) to order drinks.

We ate phenomenal. We ordered these dishes: pasta with chicken and mushroom, sausage and breaded beef fillet with fries and for starters Spanish choricito with white wine and chicken strips. Excellent treatment. Ah!!! and the cool beer.

Very poor service as i got there 10 min before 19h and they said they are not serving any food, not even peanuts. Why have such fancy places in a former industrial place? Is it so difficult to offer snacks until later or at least 8pm?

Das Gelände des Zollvereins ist sehr groß und es gibt einiges zu entdecken. Da braucht man zwischendrin etwas ordentliches zu essen. Natürlich Currywurst! Ich habe mich glücklicherweise für 2 Tapasgerichte entschieden, denn die Portionen sind recht großzügig bemessen. Die Servicekräfte sind sehr freundlich.

Were in this restaurant today for the first and last time. The atmosphere here is simply fantastic. The staff is a complete disaster. How can you lose track of things in a half-full shop? Luckily the drinks order went smoothly. The food Not at all. We sat there for over an hour and waited for the second main meal and although the waiter passed our table several times, he didn't notice it. Is it now the guest's job to remind him of his work? I don't think so. It was also not possible to deliver a starter that only consisted of aioli and bread. It was also not possible to refill empty glasses as this was completely ignored here too. At some point it became too colorful for us. When we wanted to pay and pointed this out to the waiter, he also became very unfriendly. The fact is: The staff should be given instructions on how to use the tray, the correct division of the tables should also be made clear to the four who were there today and the kitchen should think about it when an order comes for several dishes on the receipt, it can't be that you send out one dish and not notice that the other one wasn't made at all. It's a shame if you scare away guests with such actions.

Went to Zollverein today to stretch our legs. After our walk we wanted to have a drink at "The Mine". After about 15 minutes we left the location again (during this time the waitress was outside 4 times, about 5 meters away, without noticing us). Unfortunately, there wasn't much motivation to be seen in the operation. Sorry, but we do not recommend the location.

I was very disappointed with my visit to this restaurant. From the start we felt ignored by the waiters and had to wait forever for anyone to even come to our table. Overall, the service was extremely slow and inattentive. The food was overpriced and absolutely unspectacular. For the high prices I would have expected something special, but what we were served was mediocre at best. We were particularly struck by a waitress who was very annoyed when we wanted to order a cappuccino. Your rude behavior made the entire experience even more unpleasant. Overall, I unfortunately cannot recommend The Mine. Neither the service nor the price-performance ratio is right here. So more appearance than mine...

Very very long wait for a drink. Drinks were still cool, not cold, when they finally arrived. Great atmosphere 👍. Food looked good (which was carried past us) and was actually delivered to the guests quicker than the drinks. Prices are more likely to be in the upper third (since we had plenty of time to observe because the drinks didn't come) 😉.

Nice restaurant. Prices are generally reasonable for a tourist hotspot. Points deducted because not a single non-alcoholic drink was cheaper than beer. (only malt beer and non-alcoholic beer at the same price). As well as a deduction for the slow service

Eight of us ate there before our visit to Rammstein. We were all thrilled. Whether in terms of taste or portion size, everything was great. Taxis were arranged for us without any problems! If we are in the area again we would be happy to come back

A pity. Unfortunately, we were skillfully ignored our entire stay. At the beginning a waitress came and asked in a bad mood whether we wanted a card, we said yes and from then on there was unfortunately radio silence. After about 15 minutes we asked reception for a map and were told: that's actually not my area. Receive the cards. The shop was busy, but there was enough staff on site so that the people sitting outside were also served. Unfortunately, we had no luck inside; waitresses walked past us every 30 seconds, but they avoided or ignored eye contact. We weren't even asked for a drink, we would have liked to have eaten the main course we chose, but unfortunately we got up and left after more than 30 minutes. Nobody was interested and nobody said goodbye. All in all a very disappointing experience. Unfortunately there was no service.

Absolute impudence. The Wiener Schnitzel was just disgusting. Formed meat that is warmed in the microwave. Just under €20 for that. It tastes better at Mac Donalds! Tourist rip off. If you value your health, avoid this place! Better go a few meters further around the corner to Mezzo Mezzo!

Nice place! Hospitable, always asking if everything is to your liking. Very good reception without having to have a reservation. The mine counter, for 2 people, meat very well prepared and everything about it just top. Nice tent, a mine effect. I will definitely come here several more times!

Great location right on the world heritage site. Very nice atmosphere. Unfortunately, vegetarian dishes are significantly overpriced compared to the rest of the menu.

It took so long to get food, the food had no taste, one of our group waited for 2 hourst to get schnitzel. We had a reservation aswell so the staff should have been more prepared for us. Not worth the money and the wait.

Even though we only live a kilometer away, this was our first time here. The ambience and location on the site of the world cultural heritage site is of course great. We liked the food and it wasn't overpriced. The staff is friendly. I see potential for improvement in, on the one hand, the attentiveness of the staff (we were there on a Thursday and even though it wasn't full it took a long time before we could order more drinks) and, on the other hand, you should wait to serve the main course until the starter has been finished. All in all, we felt very comfortable and will definitely come back.

The ambience is great and integrated into an old mine building, the service could be a little more attentive and unfortunately the food didn't live up to what the ambience promised. For the Ruhr area, the currywurst was a straight 4-, the schnitzel had spent too long in the deep fryer and the hamburger was almost cold when it was served... So there's still room for improvement 😉

When we entered the restaurant we were handed the card and told us that we could choose any table. Which was ok. Unfortunately, after 30 minutes they didn't manage to take our order because no staff came to our table. Therefore there is no rating for food and drink. The ambience is nice, but the service is non-existent.

The best choice for having good time in the district. Historical building was renovated and it makes the ambience amazing. It is supported by convenient decoration. And foods are tasty and good looking. You can feel that everything was prepared attentively. I hope i will be there again.

The Mine is a really nice and modern venue. The food was delicious, as was the service, always attentive and friendly. The ambience is great, it has a certain charm, especially due to the unusual interior design. In terms of price you can't complain, price/performance is right. This restaurant is highly recommended and one of my favorites in the area. Always happy!☺️

Good restaurant to eat at if you are visiting the Zollverein complex. There is pasta, hamburger, schnitzel, bratwurst... and good beer on tap. It is located next to the Ruhr Museum
