I've known the J&H for a good 15 years. While I'm not a regular visitor (also for the reasons listed below), I do visit several times a year. After yesterday, I'll vent my frustration here. Unfortunately, 80% of visits involve something wrong, sometimes not so dramatic, sometimes really annoying. Why do people still go there?! Because there's unfortunately no other location or bar where you can end the evening comfortably or just drop in spontaneously. I know that the owner has changed in all that time. So I won't start with the old topics. The current owner can't do anything about that. I'll just focus on the last year or so. Last night. After a short walk, I spontaneously decided to sit outside around 9:30 p.m., knowing better. After about five minutes, the waitress came. I think it was a bit long, but there was also a football game on and there were a few customers inside, so it was still okay. I ordered a beer from her. I saw her outside again 5 minutes later. After that, I didn't see her again. The next waiter came outside another 20 minutes later, without drinks for anyone, just to clear tables. Six tables remained unattended for a correspondingly long time. There's no such thing as a relaxed atmosphere. And I guess they don't want to make money. I stood up to leave, frustrated. The waiter asked me what I wanted to order. I explained. He apologized several times and offered to buy me a drink. He tried hard and was friendly. But now I was fed up. Now for further visits: -Apart from the first order, you often don't get served actively; often no one comes to your table, even if your glasses are empty. Especially not outside. -Bills are often incorrect. Sometimes with long discussions. -I sit outside on a Saturday lunchtime and after 15 minutes I'm told that they can't serve me because it's so full, after three tables have been paid for in the meantime. -I don't dare try most food anymore. When I go out to eat, I expect what I get to be something I can't make at home, or couldn't make as well myself. -Breakfast: A slice of cheap ham, cut in half, pressed together. It couldn't be more unloving or unwelcoming. The croissants also work as doorstops. -Beer often seems stale. I wish something would change there someday. But it probably won't. The sad thing is that, despite my bad experience with the shop, I'll keep going there. Precisely because there are no comparable alternatives. If there are, I'm happy to accept suggestions. With this unique position in the neighborhood, you almost have a responsibility to make more of it. I don't wish anyone harm, but really, the shop really needs to go bankrupt and be taken over by someone who really knows what they're doing and who's running it properly. I think then it'll be a real gold mine. What a shame.

We recently went out for coffee and cake on the terrace—after a long time—and were initially served by the manager. Because all the tables in the front row were either reserved or occupied, we sat at a free table in the second row. As a restaurateur, this man should urgently address his deficiencies in his personal interactions with his guests. He behaves in a completely distant manner, bordering on arrogance. The coffee and cake were very good, though. The view of the Ruhr was also great, of course, but we didn't feel welcome there. More like we were being a nuisance. It didn't seem to be any better at the neighboring tables. It used to be much more pleasant there. My mother was disappointed, as she had once celebrated her wedding there and had only had good experiences at the Schevener Hof afterward. It's a shame that such a beautiful destination is now being crossed off our list. Other restaurants can do better. We'll gladly go somewhere else and say goodbye quietly! :-(
