Absolutely gorgeous view, attentive and friendly service, food was the best of the trip! Great wines. Went during Thanksgiving and it was just us in the restaurant. A bit pricey, but completely worth it for the quality of service and food. If you love wine and need a meal, stop at the Schloss!

Die Schlossschänke ist nach der Übernahme durch die Favorite wieder auf höchstem Niveau: Das Essen vorzüglich, der Service aufmerksam und zugewandt, der Blick ein Wahnsinn! Wer zeigen möchte, was der Rheingau kann, kommt an Schloss Johannisberg nicht vorbei. Ein Wohlfühlerlebnus der besonderen Art!

Wonderfully located restaurant full of atmosphere with a great view on the Rhein valley over the vineyards. Unfortunately table clothes are not the standard option at least on the terrace, but a place of charme and elegance cannot miss a proper table decoration. Wines are nice and overpriced. A glass of Pinot Noir goes for 20 euro. Food options vor vegetarians and vegan very limited and greatly overpriced. Service kind but mediocre, a lot of details are not catered for a place which wants to present it as exclusive. I can accept this in an informal, average priced place. Here for a main and a glass of wine expect to spend around 50. Probably sitting in front of the restaurant, on the wine garden, prices would have been less pretentious. I am absolutely fine with spending for food, but I expect true quality. My vegetarian dish - grilled vegetables - was pretty much a disaster. The amuse-bouche sent from the kitchen nice, bread and butter with prosciutto very generous but not an option for a pescatarian customer. Notice I asked explicitly for meat-less alternatives before ordering my main. Lack of attention to the detail is ok in a locanda. In such a place it is sloppy. and the restaurant was even half empty.

We sat outside on the terrace and drank wine. The view was beautiful and the service was good. Unfortunately, the prices were very high.

We always enjoy coming here, and we've usually managed to get a table spontaneously. The food is exquisite and beautifully presented. The wines from the world's oldest Riesling vineyard are the perfect accompaniment.

On Tuesday, we visited the Schlossschänke for the third time in six weeks. This time, four of us were there for dinner. And again, it was excellent all around. If I could give the service six stars, I would. It was perfect every time, too. The well-kept beauty of the grounds is magnificent.

Schloss Johannisberg – Where Time Takes on Taste This is not a place you simply enter. It is a place that receives you – with grace, with royalty, and with a view that stretches beyond the day. Schloss Johannisberg, perched high above the Rhine, wears its history not like a monument, but like a promise: here, life is celebrated differently. It speaks of craft, of origin. And it remains humble – almost as if it doesn‘t want to disturb the wonder of the moment. And there it stands – the bottle of Fürst von Metternich. Often overlooked under supermarket lights, it appears here like a preserved moment. It belongs to this place, like the patina on the old walls. In its sparkle lies history, and suddenly, you don’t just lift the glass – you lift yourself. I will drink this sparkling wine differently from now on. With a nod to the castle. And a smile to life. I wish Simon Kieslich and his remarkable team all the best – not just for their cooking, but for the way they breathe this place deeper each day. Wir waren mit Freunden aus Australien zum Mittagessen im Biergarten. Der Service war sehr aufmerksam und nett, nette Atmosphäre, das Essen sehr gut. Wir kommen gerne bald wieder.

We've been dining at Schloss Johannisberg for many years and always love it. The ambiance and the view are simply beautiful. This time, the occasion was our wedding anniversary. We found the food delicious. The sparkling wine and wines were excellent. The service staff was attentive and very friendly. A wonderful evening.

A culinary decline across the board! What was once the art of Wiener Schnitzel is now just a sad mass-produced item – careless, completely lacking in refinement. Once a flagship, today a culinary indictment. And the prices? A scoop of lemon ice cream for 18 euros – that's not fine dining, that's pure rip-off. I know what good food tastes like – and this has nothing to do with quality or standards. Anyone who treats guests like this doesn't deserve it. (I would like to emphasize at this point that I politely complained twice to two different waiters. Unfortunately, my first feedback was completely ignored, and the second waiter told me this was outside his area of ​​responsibility and that I should contact management. I did not come to your establishment to have an unpleasant experience or cause a scene. If the service staff asks if everything is okay and receives an honest response, I expect appropriate action. It should not be my job to draw attention to grievances through loud behavior or complaints.)

Excellent wine, good food, great views!

We had lunch outside on the terrace on May 31, 2025. Cold bratwurst for 18 euros (two small bratwursts). A tablespoon of potato salad and a jar of mustard dipped in the potato salad. It's hard to imagine worse food for that much money. It's outrageous.

Very nice place to sit. We went for coffee and cake after a hike. Service was slow but okay. The coffee was very good. (Yes, even coffee can't taste good!) The cake was good. Homemade.

New management, new class! Excellent service, friendly staff, pleasant furnishings, tastefully decorated, finely seasoned and harmonious food, although the portion sizes of the main courses should be considered part of a multi-course meal.

Since May 1st, the Schlossschänke has had a new operator, and they're by no means unknown in the restaurant scene: The operators of the Favorite Parkhotel in Mainz are now also responsible for the Schlossschänke. But first things first: Shortly after the change of operator, we were able to reserve one of the coveted window seats at short notice. The service was friendly and prompt, and aperitifs and appetizers were quickly brought to our table. The food selection has a gourmet feel, although we opted for the seasonal asparagus dishes. The wine selection, of course, focuses on wines from the Schloss Johannisberg winery. Up to this point, there was definitely nothing wrong with the overall experience. However, apparently without prior reservations, the restaurant grew more and more crowded, the service increasingly distracted, and at one point, even our empty wine glasses were overlooked; refilling our own wines was impossible due to the distance from the bottle. It should be mentioned positively that the restaurant manager wasn't above lending a hand in the service himself – not a given everywhere. Conclusion: High standards for food and drinks, but the service still needs to get into gear. It's not just the kitchen, or just the service: It's the interplay of all components.

Such a beautiful place and such amazing food. An impertinence for every gourmet. It tastes better at My Thay or at McDonalds. I no longer have to make a reservation here.

Today, in brilliant weather, I was able to visit the Schlossschänke at Johannisberg Castle and was completely thrilled. The service was simply excellent from start to finish - attentive, extremely friendly and helpful. You immediately noticed the positive change brought about by the new caterer or operator “favorite” from Mainz. The food was simply a delight! The quality of the food was very high and it tasted excellent. A big compliment to the kitchen! The whole atmosphere was just perfect thanks to the great service and delicious food. I can highly recommend the Schlossschänke under the new management of “favorite” and am already looking forward to my next visit! A very big thank you to the entire team for this wonderful experience.

Speaking only about the restaurant. I understand that we should account for the view and the location but the food quality is definitely not worth on average 45 euros per main course. Maybe it is worth that money for germans, but definitely not if you compare to other EU countries. I would rate the food comparable to an average restaurant in Italy, France or Spain.

This is one of my favourite places when visiting the Hessen.

Eine schöne Anlage und eine wunderbare Aussicht, aber schon eine telefonische Reservierung haben sie vor Ort nicht hinbekommen. Ich habe ein Wiener Schnitzel gegessen und leider war die Panade doppelt so dick, wie das zähe Fleisch, dazu total versalzen und es schmeckte vor allem nach altem Frittierfett. Anstatt einer Soße gab es Preiselbeermarmelade - nicht etwa Preiselbeeren, wie man sie zu Wild gerne isst. Es war sehr teuer und das Essen recht minderwertig und geschmacklich grenzwertig. Auf der Toilette gab es keine Seife und die Tür zur Toilette würde man eher in einer Kaschemme am Hamburger Hafen vermuten. Renovierungsbedürftig. Insgesamt für die Preisklasse wirklich mangelhaft.

Friendly staff and top-notch taste….

SO SO sad that the vines around the restaurant are removed. It really made the entire restaurants atmosphere’s as if you’re in Italy or so. Even though the restaurant is still cute, and the food tastes good, it doesn’t feel as much like being in a vineyard now. I hope they put the plants back before summer. One of the waitresses was incredibly rude—I’ve never been treated so badly. We had made an online reservation planning to have some drinks and a small bite to eat. When we arrived, we were seated in the winter garden, which was very empty, and we didn’t disturb anyone during our visit. However, when she noticed we weren’t ordering a full meal, she gave us a disapproving look, became visibly annoyed, and started clearing our cutlery in a hasty, angry manner. Her behavior ruined my day; I was really looking forward to a relaxing break from the city, and this was not what I had hoped for. On a slightly positive note, another staff member was very friendly, but it didn’t make up for the poor service we received.

One thing has to be said about this restaurant and its price point: you go here for one reason and that is the view, especially at the window seats. The kitchen performance is okay, portions are rather small, prices (even for the wine grown directly in the region) are extremely high. Update: There will be a new head chef. We'll try it out when we get the chance.

Great website and inviting! But if you're looking forward to the Christmas goose meal after making a reservation, it's very disappointing to be told on site that the goose is out; and that on December 1st!! And that wasn't the only food that was "off"! It was thanks to my wife that the four of us didn't leave immediately. I'm not coming anymore!!!

Die Küche war bei Standards überraschend gut, ich möchte sagen ausgezeichnet. Die Lachs Variation als Vorspeise war außergewöhnlich. Abgerundet von einem wirklich zuvorkommenden und freundlichen Service – alles in allem eine äußerst empfehlenswerte Gastronomie.

Very good food, but a bit overpriced. The Wiener Schnitzel was perfectly breaded and came with cucumber and lamb's lettuce. The wild boar cheek was wonderfully braised with pearl barley and a very tasty sauce. The wine selection was - as expected - very large. Service friendly. And then of course the wonderful view over the Rhine and the vineyards in the Rheingau and Rheinhessen!!

The price-performance ratio is not right. Very nice view, but overpriced for normal good, not exceptionally good food. Service - mediocre, Table linen leaves a lot to be desired for this price segment.

Food was average, wine was severely overpriced, server started out ok, then seemed to forget about us, but when it came to a bill he said “I’ll add 20% tip”. I was taken aback and said no, 10%! Then I looked up tipping in Germany — we got fleeced. At least the view was great!

We were there at lunchtime with 15 people without having made a reservation. Everything inside was empty. Nevertheless, we were greeted with a big sigh. Das i-Tüpferl dieser so besonderen „Location“ ist das gute Essen, wobei die optische und geschmackliche Feinheit jeder Speise darüber hinwegtrösten mag, dass ihre Wahl auf der Basis einer eher überschaubaren Karte zustande kam! Das Personal ist sehr nett! Gewünscht hätten wir uns indes, dass wir unseren Aperitif in der ihm gebührenden Zeit hätten genießen können - das Essen kam zu schnell, schon nach dem 3. Schluck! Für ein das Essen begleitendes Glas Wein bestand dann kein Interesse mehr! Schade, zumal bei dieser interessanten Weinkarte! Werden aber wiederkommen!

Overall it was a disappointment. Sure, the ambience, the view and the historical location definitely score points. But what appears visually impressive and idyllic belies the culinary performance. The service isn't really unfriendly, but it's not nice either and a bit arrogant. The food itself is okay, but the portions are outrageously small for the price. The wine was good and overpriced, but you can't expect anything else in a restaurant. Our conclusion: Nice view but not a convincing restaurant.

Good food, professional service, nice view.

Essen war klasse. Aufgrund einer größeren Gruppe war es leider relativ laut, schade, dass Aperitif und Wein zum Essen parallel serviert werden - trotz meines Hinweises, den Wein bitte zum Essen zu bringen. Der Wein kam in zweiten Anlauf dann deutlich später. Der Hauptgang wurde verhältnismäßig flott serviert. Insofern: Zeitmanagement ist optimierungsbedürftig, ansonsten aber freundlicher Service.

Der Service ist fanatastisch, das Essen ist hervorragend, das Ambiente und die Aussicht überragend! Im großen und ganzen überragend!

After the concert (reserved on site beforehand), you can visit what is offered in the program booklet with a small menu. Every year on our wedding anniversary, my husband and I surprise each other with a dinner date at a special restaurant. This year I decided on the Schlossschänkd. It was a fantastic evening! The location is simply wonderful, we had a magnificent view over the Rhine Valley. In the middle of the vineyard, you can sit on a terrace and enjoy a great dinner. The service was exactly what I wanted. Very accommodating, friendly, charming and professional. Our food (see photos) was super tasty, fresh, beautifully prepared, super filling, simply delicious! From me there is ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for this great evening

The scenery is unbeatable. Sipping Riesling, eating German delicacies, and looking at the Rhine Valley in the distance, it’s such a picturesque scene that’s hard to describe.

Very tasty food with a great view

Das Ambiente ist einfach großartig (auch wenn wir leider keinen Platz mehr auf der Terrasse bekommen haben). Das Personal ist sehr freundlich und zugewandt. Super, dass es eine extra Konzert Speisekarte für das späte Abendessen nach dem Konzert gibt, die etwas kleiner ist als die sonstige Speisekarte. Allerdings sind die Preise schon sehr kräftig (für ein Nudelgericht mit Pfifferlingen 26 € das ist schon sehr teuer). Trotz der höheren Preise als in anderen Lokalitäten ein wunderbarer Ort. Man muss dort ja nicht täglich essen.

Wir fanden den RoséSekt zu lieblich. Ich würde mir eine größere Auswahl an echten Vorspeisen wünschen. Das Steak war sehr gut. Vielleicht eine größere Auswahl beim Rotwein??

Toller Chef, toller Service, insg. ein gelungener Besuch.

Wir wurden mit 4 Personen in einem "Seitenraum" plaziert, es war laut und ziemlich eng. Da ich für 17 Uhr reserviert hatte wurden wir in den Raum für Konzertgäste (Konzertbeginn des Rheingau Musik Festival 18 Uhr) gebeten. Wir bekamen zuerst nur die "Konzertkarte" als Speisekarte zu Lesen, erst auf Nachfrage die komplette Karte. Bis kurz vor 6 wars eng und laut, danach hatten wir den Raum für uns allein. Das war wiederrum schön!

Nice, local place. Pasta was overcooked. Salad was drowning in oil & vinegar. Service was nice and attentive. Patio was nice.

Beautiful location with wonderful views. The food tastes good. Before concerts, unfortunately only with a very limited and not particularly creative menu. But: Poor, albeit super-fast service. We had an aperitif, wine and food at the same time. My husband was served before me. This doesn't fit the category the restaurant wants to belong to. Unfortunately this service came from the restaurant manager (in jeans and a t-shirt) so we wouldn't expect anything better here for another visit.

War alles prima. Ein wunderschöner Tisch im Wintergarten mit Blick auf die Weinberge und den Rhein. Freundliche und sehr zügige Bedienung. Essen und Getränke waren sehr gut, preislich gehoben. Kommen auf jeden Fall gern wieder.

Review refers to the terrace of the Schlossschänke: we ordered a vegetarian tarte flambée and 2 glasses of wine. You will be given a pager to pick up your food. The tarte flambée could be picked up after just 2 (!) minutes. As expected, it was frozen food and tasted accordingly. The prices are far too high for that. Pure rip-off and unworthy of the location. Yes, the view is fantastic. Then it's better to go around the corner to the wine stand at Goetheblick - which also has a beautiful view and a small but fine selection of food (vespers) at reasonable prices.

Visiting restaurant Schlossschänke was an almost surreal experience: The view is fantastic, the atmosphere almost impossible to dislike, being located on the premises of legendary riesling producer Schloss Johannisberg. It seems, however, that all of this is forgotten once you enter the restaurant: no attention at all was given by the staff to the wine menu, which we explicitly had to ask for (We also had to explicitly ask for hand towels). I definitely would've expected more attention on the wine and more attentive service in general. They had Alfred Gratien brut by the glass, which I enjoyed a lot. They also have their Silberback GG available for a good price (€75). The food is ok, the starters are perhaps a bit on the pricey side. The menus we got had some surprising inconsistencies; the wine list had a different set of food, it was not explained to us whether that was available or not. Also, only one of our three menus (the ones for the day) had the dessert "Sorbet des Tages" on it. Luckily, the one of us who actually wanted that dessert (me) had been given this particular piece of paper. The ice was a bit disappointing, but at least it was not expensive. To be fair to the restaurant, it should be noted that yesterday was also a concert day and therefore perhaps extra much to do. But all in all, given the price point and our expectations, I cannot recommend this restaurant. The Weinstube of Kruger-Rumpf is a better choice.

We ate tarte flambée on the terrace, which was ready after just two minutes and didn't taste like anything. Apparently frozen goods at high prices. The wines cost more than in smaller quantities in downtown Frankfurt. Maybe a case of “beware of rip-offs”? But the view is great.

It is really a horrible place!!!!!! I arrived at the door and they saw me but not opening the door at all. Afterwards, they told me that I could not sit on the Terrasse if I don’t order food at 5pm. I said fine, I will sit outside. Then I wanted to order but they said not order at my place … very good! I think because I don’t look like local people… I don’t have the same Color … never again!

Sehr schönes Ambiente, tolle Aussicht, sehr guter Service, gutes Essen, interessante Auswahl auf der Speisekarte. Leider ist es schwierig einen Tisch direkt am Fenster zu bekommen, obwohl wir eine Woche vorher reserviert hatten. Der Tisch am Fenster war angeblich reserviert, aber wurde gar nicht besetzt. Das hat uns doch dann etwas irritiert. Schade! Trotzdem werden wir wiederkommen, die Dame, die uns bedient hat, war sehr aufmerksam.

Haben auf der wunderschönen Terrasse gesessen vor einem Konzert. Das Personal war sehr aufmerksam und freundlich, das Essen sowohl optisch als auch geschmacklich hervorragend! Wir kommen gerne wieder!

I really want the restaurant manager to see this. A restaurant with racist servers. The female staff member at the outer hall had a very bad attitude. I had the worst experience at this restaurant. We made a reservation for this restaurant on this trip and visited with high expectations. we experienced racism for the first time. First of all, I would like to say that we have no problem communicating in English because we went to school in the United States. I asked, “can we order now? ”She said “no ”and walked away. We talked to the manager about it and tried to leave the restaurant, but thanks to the friendly manager, we were able to eat. But it was the first time I heard “no”and her attitude ruined my trip. She was really unfriendly and rude. If you go to this restaurant, I hope you don't meet the female employee in charge of the outside hall. Der Service der Mitarbeiterin war ausgezeichnet, die Preise sind derartig in die Höhe gegangen, Vorspeise € 26, das wir wohl nicht mehr kommen werden.

Wir hatten schriftlich für 15:00 für Kaffee und Kuchen reserviert anlässlich meines Geburtstages, bekamen einen schönen Tisch zugewiesen im Restaurant, mussten diesen aber wieder verlassen, da wir nicht richtig essen wollten. Kuchen gäbe es nur im Innenraum. Der Wintergarten mit Blick blieb daher um diese Zeit nahezu komplett leer. Es gab nur drei Kuchen zur Auswahl. Die Kuchen selbst waren so kalt, als wären sie gerade erst aufgetaut worden. Alles nicht sehr liebevoll angerichtet. Das Personal war teils sehr laut und bis auf eine Kellnerin , die uns proaktiv wegen eines Sektes ansprach, sehr uninteressiert. Alles in allem nicht das Flair, das wir von früher kannten und auf das wir uns gefreut hatten.

Essen durchschnittlich, völlig überteuert. Preise wie Sterneküche, aber bei weitem nicht die Qualität. Man zahlt im Wesentlichen für den sehr schönen Ausblick auf den Rheingau.

Wir haben hier mit der Familie den Geburtstag meines Mannes gefeiert. Es war ein wunderschöner Abend und ein wirklich tolles Essen. Außergewöhnliche Kompositionen - die wunderbar geschmeckt haben und auf der Zunge vergingen. Alles frisch und köstlich. Herzlichen Dank, dass die Küche auf alle Unverträglichkeiten und Allergien eingegangen ist und diese auch ernst genommen hat. Der Service war sehr freundlich, zuvorkommend und kompetent. Danke für den schönen Abend. Ich hatte bereits im Februar mit meinem Mann meinen Geburtstag dort gefeiert, der einzige "Nachteil" war, dass es doch recht kalt war in dem Lokal. Vorne im Terrassenbereich ist der Blick traumhaft, aber es hat so gezogen, dass wir um einen Tisch im Restaurant gebeten haben. Das war auch überhaupt kein Problem. Wir freuen uns schon auf den nächsten Besuch.

The restaurant is beautifully located. The food was delicious and the service was exceptionally good! However, given the small portions and the good, but not excellent, food, we have a hard time determining the price.

Very good food with a fantastic view. The wine is fantastic.

Very limited wine list and overcooked asparagus. Much different from previous visits.

Nice view from the terrace. Kitchen perfect. However, the waiter was self-absorbed and arrogant.

We were there today (May 1st) and had something to eat and drink outside in the castle tavern. Two apple spritzers, a Spundekäs with pretzel and a tarte flambée and paid just under €30. The Spundekäs with pretzel was okay, I think it was a ready-made product from Schwälbchen. But the real hit was the tarte flambée, the edge was slightly burnt, it was topped with four pieces of hard-boiled egg, three slices of bacon and I think there were also a few pieces of onion on it. That was really nothing! I wouldn't buy it again! The staff is very friendly, that's what made it stand out at least.
