Rothaus Schwarzwald erleben Beim Hackl in Freiburg im Breisgau

We ate the two vegan dishes (goulash + rolled roast). The taste is delicious, but if you leave the restaurant hungry after a 25€ meal, then something is wrong. The rolled roast is more or less just a salad. Both could also serve as an appetizer. We wouldn't go there again.

I went without a reservation and didn't have to wait long to be assigned a table. The service was fast, friendly and professional. The food (Alsatian salad) was very good and was not heavy on the stomach even though it had sausage. A highly recommended site.

Absolutely thrilled! We came here after another reservation fell through. Fortunately. Wonderful atmosphere, delicious food, even for vegetarians! Still traditional food without being a dive bar, but with a modern touch. Also: Finally a place where the music isn't blaring loudly and you can actually have a conversation at the table. Would love to come back.

This restaurant is just great. There is great Baden cuisine. We particularly recommend the cheese spaetzle, or if you're more hungry, the pork knuckle. The staff also do their part to ensure a good meal and are really very nice. We are really looking forward to eating here next time. A very special thank you for treating us to such wonderful culinary delights here.

We can unreservedly recommend the vegan schnitzel and the vegan rolled roast to long-time vegetarians. Chic local and the service is excellent too!

Went there for a birthday dinner. Way too expensive for the quality of the food. Good products, yes, but that special something that justifies this price is missing. For “Experience the Black Forest” with Rothaus in the name, over €5 for a large beer is very strange and water for €8 is inappropriate. But the strange feeling runs through: the ambience is cool, there is no spark, the waitresses seemed skeptical about our table, it's unclear why. The concept is also unclear, not fish, not meat: high-priced cuisine but then something special is definitely missing, but also not a brewery, so what does the shop stand for? Left the place with mixed feelings. Too bad! But shop was full, seems to have enough lovers. The communication with and flexibility of the operator was very good. But would I spend >€700 there again? No.

So...food was definitely top notch. The beer is glorious. I love the naturally cloudy. The price is in the higher segment. But the quality and service leave nothing to be desired. If you want a dignified, dim atmosphere for a candelight dinner with your loved one, you shouldn't go on a Saturday evening. The background noise was already clear, but that didn't bother me at all. A small note: the Rothaus single malt, which I really enjoyed, was served in a tumbler. But that's not enough to deduct stars. So...thank you for a very successful stay.

The staff all spoke English well and were very friendly. The menu recommendations were all excellent and I had a satisfying meal.

Rothaus, an institution! If you like delicious food and appreciate a sophisticated ambiance, this is the place for you. The menu isn't huge, but it shouldn't be if you expect fresh food. The selection and variety on the menu allows everyone to find something delicious. Ambience and service cost money, and you can definitely tell that here; the food and drinks are on the higher side, but it's worth remembering that the price is justified, as service is more than just taking your order, bringing the food, and smiling. Overall, it's also justified, especially if some of the money goes to the service.

Let's start by saying that they were very kind in taking the reservation, made as we passed by while we were visiting the city, and we continue to describe a great modern place, with tables with discreet but functional lighting, to end with the truly excellent food! Both the Badisches Schäufele and the Schweinehaxe melted in the mouth and were well accompanied. Of course we enjoyed an unfiltered draft Rothaus Bier (Naturtrüb)

On Friday, March 28, 2025, we spontaneously got a place for two people. Everything is just right in the Rothaus... from the ambience to the people and especially the food. We were served very nicely by Maria. All of this motivated us to come again on Saturday. But this time with a reservation, which turned out to be a good thing as the house was very well attended. All in all, only recommended

We had the pleasure of experiencing the Black Forest at the Rothaus - At the Hackl Restaurant and were completely thrilled. The food was excellent - tasted great, with fresh ingredients and lovingly prepared. I would particularly like to highlight Yassir's friendly and attentive service. He was not only extremely helpful, but also efficient and always with a smile. His excellent service made the evening even more enjoyable. An all-round successful experience – we would love to come back!

The restaurant is rather inconspicuous from the outside. The telephone reservation was easy and the employee on the phone was very accommodating. A very friendly greeting upon arrival and quick acceptance of orders. Starter, main course and desserts all perfect! The cooking points, sauces and side dishes are a pleasure that is second to none!! Price performance absolutely top. This restaurant is an absolute recommendation in the city center of Freiburg!!

My partner and I spontaneously went to Freiburg for a few days and the landlord of our holiday apartment recommended this restaurant to us. We reserved a table in the evening and were totally thrilled. Firstly, the staff is really nice and accommodating and secondly, the food and ambience are great. We thought it was so great that we made another reservation for the evening the following day and everything was great again. For that reason alone we will visit Freiburg again.

Beautifully furnished restaurant (including the toilets) in a modern "Black Forest style". Service staff VERY friendly, motivated, attentive and courteous! Delicious Baden cuisine (which is still reasonably priced... and not outrageously overpriced, as is unfortunately becoming more and more common). The wine selection is also (for me en taste) good.....and even the espresso after the meal is impressive. Overall great impression! We've been there twice so far... and will definitely come back. Many thanks to the entire team!

We came from Spain to celebrate New Year's Eve with 9 people, from the beginning they have made everything easier for us by making the reservation by email. When we arrived, everything was much better than we could have thought. The service has been excellent, the food magnificent and the atmosphere beautiful. We had an aperitif outside with mulled wine and beer and then dinner inside, they were super attentive to whether we were missing anything at all times. The food has exceeded our expectations and the price according to the experience, highly recommended... a 10

Ohne Reservation bekamen wir einen schönen Tisch in einer Sitznische. Erst waren sich Kellner und Chef de Service oder Chefchef nicht einig, wir bekamen dann den schönen Platz, Danke dafür :) Bedienung sehr aufmerksam, freundlich, nicht aufdringlich. Essen war hervorragend, wir hatten den Wolfsbarsch mit Tagliatelle und wildem Brokkoli. Echt gut gekocht, Fischkruste und Brokkoli minim zu salzig, aber gemeckert auf höchstem Niveau. Alles top sauber und ordentlich, gutes Bier natürlich und leckeren Kaffee. Mitarbeitende immer auf Achse, gutes Auge auf beinahe leere Gläser. Echt kompetent Leute, wir freuen uns auf unseren nächsten Besuch bei euch und empfehlen euch weiter 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

Excellent swabian and pub-style fair in a relaxed setting. Large beer selection. Visited November 2024. The Schweinshaxe aka Stinco/pork knuckle was excellent; well seasoned and done to perfection, this is the place to go for this signature southern Germany dish. There's a fair selection of vegetarian dishes and of course the namesake Rothaus beer. Reservations highly recommended.

We went to this great restaurant for lunch on a Saturday. Because the food and service were so good, we spontaneously asked if there would be a table available that evening. Although nothing was available, the gentleman who welcomed the guests said that we should just come and that he would find a solution for the two of us. This reaction alone was simply great. In the evening we were actually able to dine there again and the food was simply sensationally delicious and absolutely recommended. The service people were excellent, even after a very, very long day at work. Hats off to you for still serving your guests with such concentration and friendliness after so many hours. Conclusion: the best restaurant visit in a long time. Many thanks to the entire Rothaus team for these two experiences today.

Visit to the Christmas market in Friborg Germany, I like this city and this restaurant recommended by a friend serves excellent German cuisine. We had to wait to get a seat but it was worth it. The bar has a large choice of beer 🍺 which made the wait bearable 😁

Very chic and modern inn. Well organized and also very friendly. This is no longer a given for such a large restaurant. The food was delicious and there are even vegan spicy house dishes that go far beyond the usual, somewhat unimaginative vegan Thai curry. Clear recommendation!

Thank you for the perfect evening. I had the onion roast and was absolutely thrilled. The meat was spot on and super tender. The sauce is simple wonderful. Spaetzle and vegetables are top class. The service was very accommodating and super friendly. I also really liked the ambience. 10/10 👍

This place is a must when visiting Freiburg! Local cuisine with reasonable prices, nice atmosphere and perfect central location! Potato cream soup with truffles was mind blowing 🤤 Pig shoulder with Sauerkraut was amazing as well! Didn't have a chance to try a dessert, but according to what we saw, they were great as well!

I really like this restaurant located in the city center of Freiburg. The welcome and the service are perfect, the varied menu (with vegetarian options), the hearty dishes, the correct prices, the refined and original decor and everything down to the toilets is impeccably clean. Possibility of eating hot continuously. I will come back again and again.

War heute mit einer Freundin zum 1.Mal im Restaurant " beim Hackl" und wir sind absolut begeistert. Der Service, sehr zuvorkommend, freundlich und kompetent. Die Speisen ( wir hatten Zander und Wiener Schnitzel) exzellent zubereitet. Den Kaffee und Cappuccino gab's sogar " aufs Haus" weil der sehr sympathische Service-Mitarbeiter mitbekommen hatte,dass meine Freundin heute Geburtstag hat. In diesem ansprechenden Ambiente ist man gerne Gast und kommt auch gerne wieder. ...und by the way,: es stimmt auch das Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis. Wir freuen uns schon auf den nächsten Besuch " beim Hackl"

You wouldn't necessarily expect the ambience from traditional cuisine, as it looks very modern and stylish, but we don't find that to be a contradiction. The prices are reasonable, but this is fully justified given the harmonious overall package.

The menu is varied and offers typical regional dishes as well as international specialties. We have been regulars at this restaurant for a long time and have always been very satisfied with the food and service. Unfortunately, we were disappointed on our last visit. We were seated at a table to the left of the bar, where three tables for two were lined up so closely together that the distance between the tables was less than 30 centimeters. It was hardly possible to even get to his place through this narrow gap. Even our waiter had difficulty serving the food without accidentally touching the neighboring table. It also pulled from behind, which made the whole thing even more uncomfortable. I kindly asked the waitress if we could be moved to one of the tables with the comfortable benches because it was really uncomfortable for us. Unfortunately, this was rejected because the timing was too tight. To our astonishment, less than two minutes later, this table was given to guests who came in from outside and had not reserved. That was really disappointing for us and left us feeling like we weren't being taken seriously. What particularly bothered us was the lack of empathy on the part of the wait staff. There was no apology or expression of regret for making us uncomfortable. It has always been important to us that every guest is welcome and feels comfortable in this restaurant. Unfortunately, this time we had exactly the opposite impression. We very much hope that this was a one-off slip-up and that we can experience the usual hospitality and quality again in the future.
