Basho-An in Freiburg im Breisgau

I regularly work as a tour guide in Japan and am also responsible for selecting restaurants in Japan as part of my job, so I think I can judge Japanese restaurants and the quality of the food to some extent. I've been to Basho-An twice and have to say that the quality of the sushi is in no way inferior to the good sushi restaurants in Japan. Just recently I was at Midori No Sushi in Tokyo Ginza, a restaurant in Tokyo where, if you don't have a reservation, you have to wait outside for about an hour and then wait another hour for the sushi after ordering, because that's how it is popular and good. Here at Basho-An you don't have to wait for hours and you get equally good sushi :) The freshness and subtlety of the taste as well as the presentation are outstanding. Of course, the price is very high compared to other sushi restaurants that are usually run by non-Japanese, but at Basho-An you get the right quality and really authentic sushi for the money. The question is always whether the price and the quality offered correspond and in this case the answer is a clear yes. No criticism, just personal recommendation: I would remove all non-sushi dishes such as Wagyu (Japanese beef), which is certainly very good, from the menu and put even more emphasis on focusing on sushi in order to be even more authentic than you already are.

We've been going at least once a year since 2014. Hands down, the best restaurant in the world! Highly recommend.

The high prices no longer match the below-average performance. We enjoyed staying here before. That was our last time. The menu is no longer recommended. Three courses of sashimi, sushi and soup were below the standard of usual sushi places. The main course of lukewarm meat was served on cold plates. The meat was not properly cut through, so even experienced people had difficulty eating with chopsticks. Dessert should be a variation of Japanese nightstands. Instead, a kind of pudding that was inedible was presented in a small bowl. When we complained, we heard from service that the Japanese variation can be found in the pudding mix. Anyone who wants to lead their customers "under the hood" should not be surprised if the restaurant still has free seats on Friday evening in a well-attended city. High prices, low food quality and indifferent service didn't give us a nice evening. We'll never do that to ourselves again. Unfortunately you can't give zero stars. The boring, uncomfortable ambience of the restaurant with its overly bright lighting now suits the food better.

We've known Basho-An for a long time, but I have to say, the sushi platters were unimaginative - at least when it came to the maki, they were all inside-out, and the rice didn't have the right consistency either. Too bad.

Wir waren absolut begeistert!! Angefangen beim Service, über die Variation der Gerichte incl. breiten Palette von Sushi (insbesondere Nigiri/Sashimi) mit Optionen, welche für den deutschen Gaumen sehr ungewöhnlich sind (darunter Seeigel), bis hin zur Weinbegleitung, war alles perfekt. Wir hatten 2x das Menü nach Empfehlung des Chefs, eine Flasche Wein (ca. 50€) sowie eine Vorspeise, Getränke und landeten schließlich incl. Trinkgeld bei ca. 250€ - nicht günstig, aber für eine Erfahrung, welche denen in Japan nahe kommt, doch sehr zu empfehlen. Danke an das gesamte Team!

Lovely, atmospheric, Japanese restaurant with excellent, thoughtful service. Our servers were very professional and attentive. The food was excellent. It was the best sashimi I’ve had. I had a combo which was a hot dish with a cold dish so I chose chicken teriyaki (perfectly cooked and juicy) with Sashimi (very large slices.) it included a salad and miso soup. This is a real deal Japanese restaurant. It is pricey but you get quality across the board and I can’t recommend it enough.

Friendly, delicious food with high prices. Good rice for sushi and sashimi was really good. The karaage is recommended by the chef to taste a piece first and then serve it to the customers. Other than that, everything was good.

Impromptu lunch. Excellent service, nice ambience in the busy city. We really enjoyed the kombi meals, and the grauburgunder was a perfect match.

Super expensive, small portions, but delicious

Centrally located in the city (Parkhaus Schwarzwald City) with air-conditioning and a beautiful ambience. Service friendly (especially the gentleman) with good knowledge of the dishes and appropriate recommendations. The ladies in service can still learn from him :-) The food is very good and you can try sea urchins. But we will continue to stick with the excellent sushi and sashimi.

I was able to enjoy authentic Japanese food while being overseas. The staff were Japanese and very polite and friendly, making me feel like I was in Japan. This is a store where you want to dress up and go out.

The sushi was sensational and the warm dishes were also exceptionally delicious. The meat was cooked to perfection. The high prices seem justified here. It's just a shame that it's so overbooked that it makes no sense to drop by spontaneously without a reservation.

Located in an unassuming corner of the city, Basho-An offers fresh, expertly prepared Japanese fare with local and seasonal produce incorporated into the menu (it's spring, so they had wonderful asparagus tempura). The place is very well staffed, and despite their level of ratings by the usual suspects (GM, Michelin), it is quite casual and unpretentious. What stood out to us was the kaiso salad with splendidly prepared sea food, and the selection of sake. Would and will go again.

The quality is very good. The service was very friendly and very attentive. The ambience is average, so-so. But what is really steep is the price-performance ratio. This is all extremely expensive. Even if the quality is very good, that doesn't justify the extremely high price. Unfortunately far too expensive. We would actually like to come back, but not at these prices. A pity

For how expensive was the sushi, the quality was not so awesome. I've heard about this place, and I expected the quality of sushi that you eat in Japan (where I was on holidays) but I was disappointed. And therefore, I find it super expensive.

Wollte meiner Frau etwas anderes bieten als Sushi. Das flambierte Rindfleisch als Vorspeise war nicht schlecht, hätte aber frischer sein können. Die Hauptspeise war Tempura bestehend aus zwei kleinen Hummerschwänzen und ein bisschen Fisch, hauptsächlich aber Gemüse. Gut zubereitet, aber viel Geld für wenig Hummer. Das Sashimi war einfach schlimm. Man hatte das Gefühl es bestand aus aufgetautem Fisch. Matschig und kein Geschmack. Glauben sie mir, ich weiss nach 100 Restaurantbesuchen wie es in Japan schmeckt. Getränke überzogen teuer. Schade, aber sicher nie wieder. Das Sushi am Nachbartisch sah gut aus, aber das gibt’s woanders zum halben Preis. Aber dsa

Very friendly and nice. Food perfect! But I was very disappointed that in a restaurant that was praised in the Michelin, the toilet was not clean and tidy. This is a big minus point. There was a lot of dust (e.g. towel paper) on the floor, popcorn in a to-go aluminum bowl, coffee powder to combat the smell, etc. But the food really needs to be praised!!!!

Absolutely recommended restaurant. Here you can eat really authentically! Here you are greeted from all sides in a typically Japanese way with “Irasshaimase” (welcome) and you immediately feel like you are in Japan. The service was very courteous and excellent. We decided on the menu. From the greeting from the kitchen to the very coordinated menu to the selection of drinks, everything was perfectly coordinated. Everything tasted very good and fresh. Four of us had dinner here, the service was very nice and courteous. The food, teriyaki salmon and two large sushi plates was i. O., in total we have approx. 300€ spent. The bathroom was cramped and completely unacceptable for an establishment of this price range. Overall, value for money is just ok.

Endlich gibt es wieder einen richtigen Mittagstisch. Das hat gefehlt. Und schon bin ich zufrieden. Sehr sogar. Das Basho-An ist mit Abstand eines der besten japanischen Restaurants, das mir bekannt ist. Auch in Düsseldorf oder Berlin findet man nichts vergleichbares, besser japanisch gegessen habe ich vielleicht mal in La Jolla in den USA oder in Japan selbst. Alles ist mit Liebe und größter Perfektion zubereitet, der Service genial locker und professionell, das Ambiente immer ruhig und klar. Ein Genuss, dort den Mittag zu verbringen. So stimmt am Ende nicht nur das Preis-Leistungsverhältnis (was selten genug der Fall in der heutigen Gastronomie ist) sondern man ist so herrlich satt wie erholt. Fazit: Seit langer, langer Zeit eine Bank - besser geht es kaum. Lasst es grau so!

The ambience at Basho is charming and authentic, creating the perfect atmosphere for a journey through Japanese cuisine. The staff were extremely accommodating and impressed us with their knowledge of the menu. The selection of sushi and sashimi was fresh and of the highest quality. Each dish demonstrated sophisticated taste and careful preparation. The combination of flavors in the different dishes was simply a delight for the senses.

Das Basho-An ist ein schönes Restaurant mit unglaublich freundlichem Service und hervorragender, japanischer Küche. Wir waren bisher zweimal da, sowohl das Probiermenü als auch das Sushi ist uneingeschränkt zu empfehlen und soweit wir es einschätzen können auch sehr authentisch. Die Zutaten sind frisch und alles wird mit Liebe zum Detail zubereitet. Eine frühzeitige Reservierung am Wochenende ist allerdings notwendig.

Einfach nur Herrlich, außer die Heizung die hätte man ein oder die andere Stufe höher stellen können aber das ist jammern auf extrem hohen Niveau. Bedienung herrvoragend Essen exzellent

Grandios gutes Sushi. Sind bei einem Freiburg Trip zufällig dort gelandet und haben die Sushi Platte für 2 genossen. Diese war tatsächlich ein Genuss. Preis/Leistungsverhältnis stimmt.

das essen war zwar lecker, für den preis habe ich beim sushi aber keinen überheblichen unterschied wahrgenommen. es war angenehm ruhig, ich denke für businessessen oder ruhigen festessen ist die athmosphäre dort sehr gut geeignet. ich fand es dort toll, nur lohnt sich der preis für mich nicht so richtig.

Went there for lunch. Normally, it would be hard to book this place, however, perhaps there were less people due to the summer vacation. my daughter had the lunch set menu, my wife had Unagi Don, and I had the Sushi set. The food here is authentic Japanese. The service is friendly although not quite as fast as in other places I've been to. However, we were not in a hurry so no issue. Atmosphere is relaxed and towards fine dining. Price is quite expensive considering similar restaurants in Lörrach, but it is worth a visit and maybe even few return visits.

Bewirtung Essen und Räumlichkeiten waren ganz in Ordung. Ich hätte allerdings für das Preis Leistungsverhältnis mehr erhofft. Es ging 30 Minuten bis trotz Reservierung das erste Getränk serviert wurde. Ich hatte das Gefühl es ist ein bisschen eng getaktet. Mit dem letzten Bissen wollte man schon die Teller abräumen. Man kann ja kurz warten bis die Kunden mit dem Essen fertig sind. Kaffee oder Nachtisch oder ähnliches wurde nicht angeboten. Es ist mit dem Rollstuhl schwer zugänglich da man treppen überwinden muss. Ein Parkplatz ist nicht vorhanden man kann ins öffentliche Parkaus. Geschlossene Räume man vermisst ein geöffnetes Fenster. Es war faktisch nicht möglich noch ein weiteres Getränk zu bestellen. Es waren um 19 Uhr viele kleine Kinder mit anwesend an den anderen Tischen. Ich habe das lokal als relativ laut empfunden. Ich habe 1 Vegetarisches Gericht auf der Speisekarte gefunden : Auberginen. Kleine Portionen ideal für kalorienreduzierte Kost. Trotzdem danke !

Man kommt rein und fühlt sich gleich wie mit einem Teleporter nach Japan angekommen: begrüßt von freundliche japanidchen Kellnerinnen, gleich an der Theke sieht man den fleißigen Sushi-Meister bei der Arbeit, die Ambiente ist sehr einfach und gleichzeitig sehr stillvoll. Typisch Japanisch. Alles ist sehr authentisch, auf jeden Fall. Und natürlich das Essen. Es ist einfach sehr gut: frisch und lecker. Was braucht man noch?

Zu empfehlen wenn man qualitativ gutes Sushi essen möchte.

Zum Geburtstag hat meine Frau von Freunden einen BASHO-AN Gutschein geschenkt bekommen. Wir waren schon eine Weile nicht mehr dort und haben uns darüber sehr gefreut. Beim Empfang wurde uns bei der Hitze kühle Erfrischungstücher serviert - einfach herrlich! (Im Winter waren sie immer schön warm). Als Vorspeise habe ich ein paar klassische Nigiri Sushi À LA CARTE bestellt - alles war liebevoll ästhetisch geformt, frisch und lecker. Definitiv das beste Sushi in Deutschland! Meine Frau hatte den Algensalat mit Meeresfrüchten und war ebenfalls sehr zufrieden. Zum Hauptgang hatte ich das „Fleisch-Duett“ mit Rinderfilet und japanischen Rind. Das Fleisch war perfekt zubereitet- zart und saftig - ein echter Genuss. Zugegebenermaßen recht hochpreisig, aber definitiv empfehlenswert. Meine Frau hatte die Sushi und Sashimi-Platte „Miyabi“ - sah super aus und hat ihr wohl auch sehr gut geschmeckt. Auch die Getränke waren interessant und lecker: Yuzu, Pflaumenwein und ein wunderbarer japanischer Tee. Das Servicepersonal war freundlich und aufmerksam. Wir hatten das Gefühl eine kleine Reise nach Japan gemacht zu haben. Der Abend war insgesamt sehr schön und wir kommen ganz sicher bald wieder. Nächstes Mal vielleicht auch Mittags - da sind die Preise nämlich deutlich günstiger 😉

Wir haben nach der Trauung im Freiburger Standesamt dort mit ca. 20 Gästen zu Mittag gegessen. Die Küche hatte uns vorab das Menü mit verschiedenen Optionen vorgestellt. Alle Optionen waren fantastisch. Der Service war wirklich sehr freundlich und aufmerksam, so dass wir alle zeitgleich essen konnten und auch allen immer nachgeschenkt wurde. Super Preis Leistungsverhältnis!

Kleines Stück Japan mitten in Freiburg! Das Sushi ist vorzüglich und die Qualität wirklich auf höchstem Niveau. Service ist auch sehr aufmerksam. Für uns der einzige „echte Japaner“ in Freiburg.
