Overall, we had a lovely evening at the restaurant. The food was really very good and delicious. However, the prices were quite high. Due to its location and being a tourist hotspot, the noise level was quite high.

Huge and excellent pork knuckle

A very attractive restaurant with the S-Bahn rattling noisily overhead. Our server was efficient and promptly brought all our requests to the table with a smile. The food was good and the drinks were fantastic! My wife loved the "Hot Spritzer" and I highly recommend trying the "Sweet Pussy Deluxe". Our visit to Restaurant 1840 was a thoroughly enjoyable and well-chosen experience. The only slight drawback was that the room temperature could have been a couple of degrees warmer.

Pretty disappointing really. I can only speak for the schnitzel, but what a rip off for 30 euro. I should know better than eating at a tourist restaurant, but I expected for the price it would be better. Small portion, bland, jam tasted like it came from a supermarket. The photo is only after cutting the schnitzel, before eating it. The restaurant itself is beautiful and the staff were decent. Toilet was interesting too. Oh and no wifi which seems strange at a tourist restaurant

Not tasty overprice for tourists

It was a shame we only discovered this place on the last day of our stay, as the food was the best we had, the staff were friendly and cheerful, and the atmosphere and location are ideal. Highly recommended.

The food was okay; we ordered a burger and a schnitzel. The portions were large, the schnitzel was a bit dry, but the burger was good, but nothing special. The fries smelled of oil, and we had a slight stomach ache. The beer was very good. We waited a while for our order, but the restaurant was busy. The overall impression would have been positive if it weren't for the waiter, who was very suggestive about tips and then started being direct about the amount. He was very unhappy when my friend started discussing the matter with him, then commented under his breath, and didn't even say goodbye. This man's manners are poor.

A solid German restaurant with Berlin classics and a large selection of drinks.

We waited three hours. The waiter was extremely rude and sullen. The bathrooms were really dirty. The shank was quite good, although a little undercooked. We paid €80 for two beers and two shanks... we were hoping for a discount, given the wait. Instead, the bill was €5 more than the listed prices; I think they even added a tip. Our restaurant and service experience are probably different in Italy. Therefore, I advise every Italian to eat elsewhere.

Fast service and the fastest meal delivery I've ever seen, about 5 minutes after ordering. The waiter was funny and very nice. The food was very good and the portions were large. I highly recommend it.

Wonderful atmosphere in the afternoon, relaxing music and cheerful people. Our waiter Fafi was incredibly friendly and we had a lot of fun chatting and felt very comfortable. The food was fantastic! For many, the salt shaker next to the dish is essential! That way everyone can customize it to their own perfect taste. I'll definitely be back.

Food very dry and long waiting times.

AVOID!! What a HORRIBLE experience. From the start the host was super rude and said there was no tables for 2 even though the restaurant was empty. The snietizel was so dry and tough. Then when it comes time to pay the waiter tries telling me how much I should be giving her. Pointing at the 15% option... what a complete joke. She was a middle aged woman for reference, and should be fired for telling me what I should be tipping after horrible service. Terrible spot, do not recommend at all. The only saving grace were the bartenders seem to be nice.

A complete disappointment! We ate here during NFL weekend, and the place was packed, which was to be expected given the event. Nevertheless, a restaurant of this size should be able to handle a large number of customers professionally. Waiting over an hour for food is simply unacceptable. The food itself was a huge disappointment: dry, bland, and presented without any care. If this is being marketed as Berlin cuisine, I'll pass. Even the Coke Zero was far from what one would expect—neither Coke nor Pepsi, but simply watery and stale. All in all, a disappointing evening with not a single redeeming quality. We certainly won't be returning on our next visit to Berlin.

Typical German restaurant. The atmosphere was quite pleasant, very nicely decorated, and with music playing. We ordered a schnitzel and a chicken salad, and everything was delicious. The beer was also perfectly poured. Highly recommended.

It was very bad experience, the food was terrible. They serve me almost raw and very veiny meat and they didn’t even tell sory for that. i cant eat my meal. Please Germans don’t be so rude, learn how to behave a tourist.

Restaurant 1840 is a first-class, very spacious, and cozy restaurant. The service is very friendly and attentive. We had a pork knuckle and were absolutely delighted. The knuckle was very large (1 kilo), so I couldn't finish it. But it was so good that I had the rest packed up to take home. Even the next day, the crackling was still crispy! We will definitely be eating there more often. I can highly recommend this restaurant. Treat your taste buds there!

We went there for the generous pork knuckle and were thrilled – one of the best pork knuckles we've ever had, and huge! So come hungry. The service was super fast and friendly, it couldn't have been better! Thank you so much, we'll be back.

It's an extremely welcoming restaurant where you can enjoy a truly authentic German-style pork knuckle accompanied by an excellent beer. The staff are incredibly kind: despite my very limited German, they answered me with great patience and even taught me a few words! A huge thank you and all my respect to this wonderful team for their kindness.

The food was good, the beer was good, the atmosphere was cheerful, the two of us ordered roast pork knuckle, schnitzel, curry sausage and 2 liters of beer, which we drank without a drop.

The staff is friendly and attentive. I didn't eat, but I did try the warm apfelstrudel with beer, which was an interesting combination :) I must say, it was a delicious apfelstrudel. The atmosphere is also very nice. You feel like you're in a truly "German" atmosphere. Prices are similar to other places in the area.

We were a large group of nine people. The drinks and food were brought out so everyone could eat and enjoy themselves at the same time. The schnitzel was incredibly delicious. We sat outside, but I loved the atmosphere inside too! Highly recommended!

It's low-calorie, and some say it's the best pork knuckle in Berlin. We ended up ordering pork chops instead, which was hilarious. It was surprisingly delicious. The pork chop was a bit dry. The creamy mushroom sauce underneath was incredibly rich and flavorful, perfect with the boiled potatoes.

Food was OK. Had lamb based dish but very little meat. It took more than 1 hour to get served. Server completely forgot about us after we were served, so no desert or extra drink. Waiter applied 10% tip on bill without asking anyone. Decent place but not great.

I've been living in Germany for three years and have eaten pork knuckle countless times. But this time was by far the worst experience. The waiter brought us two portions of pork knuckle. One of them had an extremely large number of black bristles—honestly, more and thicker than my colleague's hair. I asked for the dish to be swapped or for the bristles to be properly removed. The waiter just said "just a moment" and came back with a lighter! Absolutely unhygienic in my opinion—at least they should have used a blowtorch in the kitchen. He almost burned his hand while trying and probably realized it didn't work. Then he took the knuckle to the kitchen—and it came back without the entire crust. This is incomprehensible to me and is unacceptable service. And you actually have to pay €1 for the toilet—in a restaurant! Of course, I didn't tip at the end. Overall, a truly miserable experience.

Super delicious German food with great service!

I eat there every time I'm in Berlin. The currywurst is very good, and so is the service. This time, however, I had the capital plate, which I would say takes some getting used to. Each ingredient is very tasty on its own, but the combination... the frikadelle is very good, but the almond on top is really unnecessary. The mustard and potato salad are very tasty. Then the currywurst, actually very tasty, but then the potato salad with it... that doesn't work in my opinion. I'd be better off leaving out the almond, adding a little less potato salad, and adding a spoonful of fries to the plate, and that would be perfect (for me). Last year we just had the currywurst with fries, and it was truly one of the best in Berlin. The beer is well-tempered and tasty, so we'd be happy to have it again next year.

We were there with a small group after making a reservation on Saturday evening. We all felt very comfortable there. The live Spanish music from the restaurant next door was also very nice. Patricia, our server that evening, was always smart and attentive. Just as you would expect. The food (half chicken, burger, schnitzel, etc.) was also really good. Even a small "problem" with the meal was very thoughtfully and competently resolved by the restaurant owner with an additional dessert. If I'm ever in Berlin again... I'll be back. The Pork Medallions were excellent

The pork knee is amazing, only bad thing I have to say is that a large mineral water was €7.5 which feels excessive.

Good food, great location, poor service. Adam was missing most of the time and even other waiters couldn't seem to find him or help us.

I was looking for traditional German food, so I went to a relatively crowded place. The waiter was very rude. The sausage was decent, but as expected, it was salty. I wish they'd provided more salad, pickles, and sauerkraut. I wanted to talk to the waiter, but he wouldn't even make eye contact, so I gave up and just ate.

A great restaurant with friendly service

Unfortunately, the food (schnitzel and meatball) was very dry, and for one dish (a Berliner platter), we had to ask for a second portion (the dry meatball). It's a shame; we had hoped for more.

Average restaurant and average food

A nice outdoor location in itself, but the picture changes as soon as you walk through the door. As a large group of 30 people, we were only offered three dishes, and only one for the vegetarians. The staff was not only unqualified but also rude and unprofessional. Unfortunately, the food wasn't a true taste sensation either. A shame... I would have expected more for such a high price. There are certainly more affordable restaurants in Berlin!

The place is beautiful, and that's it. Although well located, the restaurant isn't very good. We ate there for a rather high price, with food that was ultimately of average quality. The server was insistent about tipping, with a lingering stare and wandering hands on the person accompanying me. The amenities, like the women's restrooms, leaked profusely. In short, the reviews are artificially suppressed; don't fall for it. Avoid.

We tried the pork knuckle, which is enough for two people, and it was very good, the meat was tender and the skin crispy. The service was very friendly.

German cuisine (very generous portions, very delicious dishes), fantastic service. Interesting location and interior – a market all around, and a railway line overhead. The sound of trains passing over the restaurant is impressive.

Food is not good, it reminds me of a cheap food truck food rather that a restaurant. I ate the pork pretzel burger and it was not very tasty. My girl ordered the wurst with curry and it was one wurst with ketchup and curry. The craft IPA beer and potato salad was good but nothing special

I had potato soup and a Prussian skewer. The potato soup had no flavor, the bread roll didn't taste fresh, and the meat in the Prussian skewer tasted good, but the herb butter was still frozen and the vegetables seemed soft-boiled. The service was good, but I'm used to a different order: drinks first, then the appetizer, etc. Here, you get the appetizer first, then the drinks, and then the main course. While the price is understandable, you could easily spend €10 more and get a better meal elsewhere. Price per person: €20–30 I also find it funny how the owners are reporting this comment as defamation when they know everything I'm saying is true.

Although this place is in Berlin, they actually sell roasted pork knuckle, Schweinshaxe. A portion costs €18.90 and is a good size for three people to share! It was perfect for a man and two women, and the mashed potatoes on the side were also delicious, with a rich, creamy flavor. We ordered one roasted pork knuckle, one beef soup, and three beers. Two of the beers were uniquely colored, with raspberry and cherry flavors. Highly recommended for beer lovers!!! Recommended for those who want a delicious roasted pork knuckle and love fruit beer!

This restaurant is wonderful. Ray is amazing, he took care of us with care and professionalism the entire time. Despite the many guests, we didn't wait long for our order. The food was delicious. Nice cozy place. The food was great and the atmosphere is amazing.

We ate here on August 7th and August 8th. On August 7th, we had a hamburger, which was delicious, and the service was excellent. We even tipped for it. A day later, we wanted to go back for a schnitzel. They did this, and again, they were very helpful. Since we had left a substantial tip the day before, we wanted to leave a small tip this time. However, the waitress disagreed. She spoke to us in a pushy manner and kept repeating three times that she would have to pay for our meal with her bar. We explained that we found this strange, as we were paying for the food anyway. We've been here every year during the holidays for the past few years and have really enjoyed our visit, but unfortunately, due to this unpleasant experience, they won't be seeing us again.

Top quality at a good price in a beautiful ambience

The food was tasty and quick to come, however the service was very poor. Our waiter wasn't readily available and others weren't helpful. There were rats underneath some of the tables on once side of the outdoor seating area which caused us to move twice. The servers were aware of this but did nothing to change it. When it came to getting the bill our server had gone on break but not told his colleagues. Atmosphere was fine.

Extremely poor service with concerning indications of potential racial discrimination. Despite multiple attempts to get attention, the bartender repeatedly ignored my requests to place an order - even when clearly not occupied with other tasks. I was forced to wait nearly 30 minutes just to order, while staff deliberately refused to approach my table. This unprofessional behavior created an uncomfortable and discriminatory dining experience.
