ATTENTION 🚨 Aggressive and violent owner! While we were sitting outside eating, we witnessed the owner physically assaulting a passing jogger. The jogger accidentally ran into a flower box and was subsequently thrown a large wooden board at the owner and tried to grab his arm. @Jogger, if you're reading this and would like to file a complaint, please contact me! NEVER AGAIN!!!

The wine was very nice, but a jogger accidentally ran into a planter and knocked one of the boards off and the owner flipped out and threw the board at him as he ran away (?!). It was super bizarre and needlessly violent. Nobody apologized to us and we won't be back.

In the heart of Mitte, Lebensmittel isn't just a restaurant: it's a small venue where conviviality and intimacy alternate. The place has the discreet charm of an old grocery store: weathered wood, tightly packed tables, soft candlelight. Entering it feels like pushing open the door to a familiar living room, with the feeling of having already experienced something there. I came there the first time with my team: a large table, glasses raised, bursts of laughter. The owner, calm and kind, watched over us with the serenity of a host who knows his trade. The server, fast and efficient, darted between the tables with the energy of a dancer in a hurry. That evening, the generous and melting Spätzle were the keys to a simple camaraderie, the kind of dish that brings people together without even thinking about it. Another time, alone with my partner, the atmosphere changed. The candlelight gave the place an intimate aura. There, a dumpling suddenly transformed the meal: its tender and dense texture reawakened the Sundays in Lorraine from my childhood, when my grandmother placed these steaming balls in the center of the table. Feeling the aromas rise with a smile, the voices of the family gathered together, the warmth of the fireplace, and the sweetness of Grandma's kisses. The meat, its juices. Delicious and indulgent. And each time, the meal ended with a flourish: the fluffy caramelized pancakes, accompanied by vanilla ice cream and a glass of old plum wine. Divine, heady, almost captivating. A little tip: remember to order them before finishing your main course, as they require careful preparation. Lebensmittel in Mitte is therefore not just a place where you eat well. It is a place where food becomes a story: a space where collective laughter, intimate memories and suspended pleasures mingle.

After over four years of regular visits, I will unfortunately not be returning to this restaurant. We were there with a group of people, including an elderly gentleman. When ordering, he asked for as little salt as possible because he has to take medication. The waiter asked the kitchen if this was possible and returned with a positive reply. After waiting 45 minutes (!), two members of the group received their dishes, and it took another half hour (!) – after the other two had already finished their meals – for the remaining schnitzels to be served, the elderly gentleman's order was still missing. After another ten minutes, the waiter finally came out with the plate, but didn't serve it right away. Instead, he said he had a headache from the chef's ranting, that the dish had been prepared with salt after all, and that the kitchen was now closed. Would the gentleman still want his dish? The man, very hungry due to the long wait that evening and dependent on food for his medication, was forced to accept the only available dish and eat part of it. Now, mistakes can always happen, and we assumed that the dish wouldn't be shown on the bill or that we would at least be offered some other compensation. No way! The bill was added to the bill, and even with reference to the elderly gentleman's special circumstances, there was no willingness to compromise. Although the kitchen was supposedly closed long ago, the cook was still there and, with a wooden spoon in his hand, intervened in the discussion between the disappointed guest and the service staff. In a broad Berlin accent, he yelled at the guest: "With salt, without salt, this is German cuisine, they cook with salt here, what are you making a problem of?" ... "Believe me, I don't care about the job here" ... "If people eat here, then they should pay!" Service mentality and hospitality are zero – what an incredible shame!

The campsite itself is okay... But... The pitches are very small, and arriving an hour early costs €14, which is actually outrageous!!! The site was already cleared anyway, and it didn't cost any extra work. The campsite and restaurant aren't good value for money for us. The showers were okay... The urinals in the men's restroom, which lacked chemicals and water, developed an unpleasant odor after being emptied a few times... If you're passing through for a night, it's doable, but there are definitely more attractive campsites in the area. Regards

Six of us were there and rounded off our team day with a meal. The schnitzel and cheese spaetzle were very good, but my colleague and I had the veal liver, which was so overcooked you could barely cut it, let alone chew it. When we told the waitress this, she just shrugged. It's a shame, it's a very nice place, but I won't be going there again.

I am surprised at all of the positve reviews. This restaurant has the worst service out of every single restaurant I have been to in any country ever. I have never encountered a more pretentious/rude manager or terrified staff. We (table of 4 women) were the only customers indoors (outdoors was full). We ordered 3 different dishes to share because we weren’t that hungry. We were then informed that there would be a 3 € “sharing fee” for the singular extra plate that they would be giving us (that we didn’t ask for.) I have never been charged for any empty plate to be brought out to us, but at least they informed us of it beforehand. The food was average for how much it cost. At the end of the meal, an older man, who I am assuming is the manager or owner from all the negative reviews I have read about him post-meal saw one of us take a drink from our OWN water bottle and he proceeds to rudely yell at us, “You are not allowed to drink your own drinks in here!” In German, he yells at the waiters too, who seem terrified of him and behind us he is aggressively tapping on the server’s screen where they add stuff to our bill. From what I can glean from context clues he was asking them why they didn’t see us drinking from our bottles of water. At this point we know absolutely NOTHING about what is happening but it seems that most of the servers are uncomfortable and/or scared of him. We pay for our food because we believe nothing is wrong and that he was just warning us. We only see our detailed receipt AFTER we pay and we find that there is an extra charge (3.50 euros) that we were NEVER once informed about. If we hadn’t asked, they never would have acknowledged it. After translating it, we know it’s a fee for drinking our own drinks (aka, our own water bottles full of tap water.) Out of every single restaurant I have ever been to there has never once been a FEE for drinking from water bottles that weren’t even on the table. As we are traveling from elsewhere we obviously have water bottles with us and we find it inconvenient to buy water from a restaurant when we already have it in our bags. We ask one server what the fee is about and he seems scared and tells us to talk to a different server. A different server comes over and begins to explain to us that the drinking fee is because if we want to drink water we should have ordered water from the restaurant itself. He proceeds to show us some vague fine print all the way at the back at bottom of the wine page (which we did not look at because we did not want to drink that day) which is in german, which is a language we don’t fluently understand, and he tell us that it says that we can’t drink our own drinks. This rule is generally understandable, but our own water bottles? In an establishment that’s not even high-end? And getting immediately charged with absolutely NO first warning is highly absurd and unreasonable. It’s not hard to have manners and say “please don’t drink from your water bottles in here.” The water bottle wasn’t even on the table. The waiter chuckles and tells us that we, apparently, “should have” looked through the whole menu, which is illogical to expect anybody to read every word on every page of a menu. We ask for the server’s name so that way we can leave a review for terrible service but he refuses to give it to us and condescends us by saying “Why would you need my name? You don’t need my name, you can just describe me. The tall and smart one.” The real description of him is dark hair, tan skin, has facial hair and slightly tall. This policy is not that specifically the waiter’s fault but he was being very snarky and the owner/manager was impudent. As we left we even watched the owner/manager pop open a beer. I would never reccomend that anybody go to this restaurant because of the ludicrous mystery fees and the horrible service from the manager/owner and the one server who refused to give us his name.

With a few hours to find dinner before catching a train home, we passed Lebensmittel and immediately liked the feel of this restaurant. Nicely informal but with excellent quality food. Service was friendly and helpful. Staff were very busy and the food clearly needed a little time to prepare, but it allowed us time to enjoy a drink and we didnt experience a lengthy wait. The food was delicious and my spätzle was an interesting take upon a well known and well loved German meal, (even better with weißbier!). Sadly couldn't stay for the dessert which I understood involved waffles, but would love to return in the future to try it! Would definitely recommend this restaurant if you like well prepared German food, in an informal setting. The price was reasonable considering the location and the quality of the meal.

Good German cuisine and wines - and the best beer - right in Mitte

Very good all around but pricey for the food that it is. Price of alcohol is also high.

It doesn't look impressive from the outside, but you should make a reservation (we were lucky and got a table on a Saturday evening). It's a bit cramped, but the seating is still very comfortable. I had pheasant breast on porcini mushroom risotto, which was soooo delicious! My two girls had the Wiener Schnitzel with potato and cucumber salad, which unfortunately couldn't be changed, but was also very tasty. We've never seen such large, delicious veal schnitzels before 🤣👍🏼 They were tender as butter and tasted amazing, kudos to the kitchen! All in all, a very successful end to our time in Berlin. Thank you 👌🏼 We can wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant in Mitte.

Extremely tasty food, exceptional schnitzel, but absolutely horrible service. The waiter was rude, when we made an attempt to pay and the card did not work. Although we did not run anywhere and kept seated, so he could just tell us it did not go through (by the way same card worked few minutes later), and in the end we found the position that we did not get still included in the bill. Sad, as I used to recommend this place to all of my friends and was a fan of it. But this behavior multiplies all other perks by 0.

One of the best Wiener Schnitzel I have ever eaten. (My wife is from Vienna, by the way) It was so obvious that the recipe is special and a result of hard work and experience. Thanks for the meal.

If you arrive before 7 p.m., you'll have the place to yourself. Cool jazz and rhythm and blues music.

This choice was а mistake. No-hairs guy tried out us many times with his impolite manners. He was so uncomfortable in talk, he raised up his voice on simple questions and make stress to my wife and friends. Totally unacceptable way to make new customers.

The schnitzel was nice but gummy, and it was pretty expensive so I expected more. The potato salad was delicious. They also seated me in a weird spot, I think because of a miscommunication with the waiter.

Really nice restaurant in Mitte with a lot of atmosphere and great food. The ox cheeks were buttery tender and totally aromatic – exactly my thing. The cheese spaetzle was also great, and the wine went well with it. Our waiter Waldemar was relaxed and friendly and because of him alone I will always come back! A shop that I would happily recommend!

This place used to be really good and I used to come a lot when I was working in the area. I came back today and had a terrible experience: prices are crazy high, service is grumpy, and food became mediocre. Also, self service at this price range is pretty crazy. I will not come here again.

Bad atmosphere, I felt sorry for the staff who were great

It is a fantastic place to enjoy high-quality local food. It is not very big but the atmosphere is pleasant. The only downside is that they only accept cash, and that in 2025 makes me unable to give them 5 stars. I will return to eat there without a doubt.

We randomly came upon this restaurant and the service was amazing, the atmosphere reminded of old Germany and the food was delicious especially the beef cheeks, the meat was tender and flavourful.

The treatment to some members of their staff is inadmisible. One foreign lady was treated horrendously in front of the customers. I am no longer supporting any inhuman businesses.

I hardly ever write reviews but have to here. I went here about a week ago and saw an elderly man who I assume was the manager shouting at his staff, he looked drunk. Seeing other reviews it looks like not the first time. Avoid at all costs

The service was great, friendly people, running for their lives though. Might've been a tad understaffed. Both the braised Bavarian pork and the wienersnitzel were not inexpensive but worth the money.

Das Borchardts Berlin hat Konkurrenz! Im “Lebensmittel in Mitte“ gibt es ein geniales ebenbürtiges Wiener Schnitzel mit Kartoffelgurkensalat. So soll ein Wiener Schnitzel sein. Die Speisekarte ist sehr gut, die Auswahl ist groß und man findet viele tolle Gerichte. Das Ambiente ist gemütlich und der Gastraum liebevoll gestaltet. Einzig man sitzt auf Holzbänken und Holzstühlen. Aber das schmälert die Stimmung nicht. Ein mega freundlicher Service ist noch erwähnenswert. Dieses Restaurant ist unbedingt einen Besuch wert.

Bad service and terribly overpriced

THE SERVICE IS TREATED POORLY IN THIS RESTAURANT Probably the worst experience I've had in Berlin so far. I saw a man, who I assume is the owner, be extremely violent with a service girl, to the point that the girl left the place. I would never go to a place where people who work are treated like that again, even if the food is amazing, which is far from the case as everything was cold and nothing tasted good. Do not go to this store or become an accomplice to labor abuse.

Came here a couple days ago and saw the obviously very drunk owner shouting at someone on his staff in front of the whole restaurant. Needless to say there was a horrible and awkward atmosphere for everyone there. Unless that sounds like a place where you’d like to eat, then I would stay away.

They have the best schnitzel I've tried so far - simply amazing! The prices are a little higher, but absolutely reasonable for the service offered. There is a huge selection of wines with something to suit every taste. If I had to choose a restaurant in Berlin, it would definitely be this one!

Title: Tough Pheasant, Smooth Billing Practices To be fair, not all of the evening's main dishes were bad. But where there is light, there is also shadow - and it started with a pheasant, tough as an old sneaker. After a polite complaint, the dish was served again - but this time it was overcooked, without any trace of juiciness. The promised digestif to make up for it also found its way onto the table, but also onto the bill. The real highlight, however, came with the billing: we were presented with a card reader without a word - without an invoice. Only when we asked did it turn out that they had given themselves a generous 20% tip. The previously voluntarily given tip? Of course retained. Double is probably better. The illegally invoiced money was reluctantly refunded, but the aftertaste remains: if invoices are only handed out upon request and such “coincidences” occur, the whole thing seems less like an oversight... This leaves an impression that puts even an overcooked pheasant to shame. Given the responses to criticism so far, I am curious to see what elegant response will follow here.

Very pleasant meal with an “in its own juice” setting. The choice of dishes is quite wide but the prices are indeed high, which nevertheless remains consistent with this type of restaurant. On the other hand, the waiter brought us a wine “that he recommended” without telling us its name, so we found out the price at the end. A little disappointed not to have been able to get advice with the map in front of us. Very big disappointment at the time of payment when we were told that they do not accept credit cards... forced to walk two streets to find an ATM... we would have liked to have been warned in advance.

Fabulous schnitzel and beef cheeks, pheasant with excellent risotto, excellent beer, fast and friendly service, the location is the best: the TV tower stands out on the pavement, magic! Too bad about the access to the bathrooms, indecent.

Greeted in an arrogant way, I presume by the owner, we asked to have a table away from the door, the answer was either that or you can go!!! , we had a reservation and the table number was not where he wanted us to sit... the staff was kind, shame about the arrogance of the owner... We had a good dinner in a nice environment...

Nice atmosphere, the schnitzel was very tasty and the size was sufficient. The vegetarian dish with goat cheese, on the other hand, unfortunately seemed a bit randomly thrown together and the price was not justified. Unfortunately, the side dishes for 3 Wiener Schnitzels were served combined on one plate and the quantity corresponded more to an adequate portion. The same applied to the Kaiserschmarren: 3 portions were ordered, a (quite full) plate arrived, which corresponded to a maximum of 2 portions. At the end we were offered a schnapps, which we were surprised to have to pay (€6.50 per schnapps). It's a shame that the initially promising impression ultimately gave way to a diffuse feeling of deception.

Un bel posticino in una via fuori dal caos. I posti sono pochi quindi conviene prenotare. Lo staff è simpatico e gentile. Il cibo buono: pochi piatti ma abbastanza ben fatti. Non è economico anzi direi un po’ sopra la media di Berlino (che comunque è cara!!!)

Good food and wine with a cozy restaurant ambiance

Nuestro guía hizo una reserva para un grupo de 14 personas mayores finlandesas el sábado por la noche. Desafortunadamente 4 miembros de nuestro grupo no pudieron participar, y debido a nuestro apretado horario no tuvimos tiempo de informar al restaurante con antelación que nuestro grupo era más pequeño. Sólo éramos 10. El propietario se enojó mucho, ni siquiera trató de escuchar nuestras excusas y se negó a servirnos. Nos dijeron que "herausgehen" de una manera enojada y extremadamente humillante. Por lo tanto, caminamos de regreso a nuestro hotel bajo fuertes lluvias y no cenamos en nuestra última noche en Berlín. Un final triste y deprimente para nuestra maravillosa semana larga. ¡Fin en la ciudad! ¿Así se trata a las personas mayores en Alemania?

An enjoyable evening in a cosy atmospheric setting. The lamb and gnocchi was particularly good. Our waiter was a little brusk to start with but was having a laugh with us by the end of the meal. Great advice on the beers we were enjoying. Thank you

One of the best meals of my 60 years of life!!! Ox cheeks with pumpkin tartlet - a delight for the palate and tongue! We came from the cinema at 8 p.m. and the five of us wanted to go out for something to eat without a reservation, and despite the restaurant being full, chairs were moved here and there and the table was divided differently, and lo and behold - the space was created. Three of us wanted the schnitzel which was so big that it overhung the plate on both sides with delicious potato salad - everyone was very happy with the meal and I was delighted with mine. Next time I'll try the deer medallions and definitely the Viennese Kaiserschmarrn!!! The service was very nice and attentive, the atmosphere was cozy/rustic. Great recommendation!!!

The food is really good, especially the kaiserschmarn is made on the mount Olympus. However the food isn’t the reason why one has to eat here. The place is a contemporary remake of Fawlty Towers at its finest. Either you love it or you hate this place. The owner doesn’t look like Cleese but in his manners he could be his twin brother. Greatly enjoyed reading all the hilariously savage responses to the bad reviews here, but was also a little scared. Anyway, finally made it back here after more than a decade and it’s every bit as good as I remember. Had the lamb Bourgogne and the käsespätzle and they were both magnificent. #¥%& the haters!

Went to get a bottle of red wine, one of the employees just handed us the most expensive bottle on the rack with no explanation saying this is the best. When we said that our budget is lower he just told us to pick one ourselves then and left immediately. Very rude, would not recommend shopping there.

Super nice service, the Halloween evening seemed fully booked, I just happened to pass by and a place was organized especially for me. The atmosphere is super nice, tastefully and homely furnished. I ordered the goat cheese gratin on wild herb salad with tipsy onions and red caps. It was a celebration! Big thanks to the kitchen for this wonderful taste experience. I ate very reverently and slowly, it was really a pleasure. And that's exactly why I go to a restaurant and am happy to pay for good craftsmanship. I'll definitely be back!

Very nice restaurant with extremely courteous staff. The 4 of us only ordered 2 main courses because we didn't want to eat so much with our children so late. That was absolutely okay for the staff. The food was delicious, but unfortunately the cheese spaetzle wasn't very authentic. The wine selection here is also very good. We'd love to come back.

Wonderful hospitality in the middle of Berlin, not far from Alexanderplatz, especially for lovers of hearty food. Very tasty, prices very moderate and reasonable. Only cash payment possible. Go back! 👍

Food was very tasty, nice and cute restaurant. It was just very warm.

If the cuisine and setting are correct. The service and servers are terrible. We made the effort to speak German, but this earned us some ridicule. The first ones might seem friendly. But the repetition was overdone. In addition, the waiter spoke to us systematically in German, even when we did not understand. The dishes are much more expensive than advertised on Google. Nothing below 20€ and 3/4 are above 30€ and if you ask to change an ingredient, you will be asked for a supplement. We were 2 families: 4 adults and 4 children, by simply taking one dish each we got it for €300. And to top it off, when it came time to pay, we asked if the bill could be split in two. To maintain the continuity of the detestable service, the waiter firmly refused. Even when he insisted, he remained categorical. “That’s not possible.” We do not recommend this establishment!

My personal opinion: The schnitzels were very tough and completely overpriced. The potato salad, however, was very tasty. The spaetzle were cooked and then fried again - I assume warmed up in the pan, because that's exactly how they tasted. I don't want to say anything against the drink prices - it's okay for Berlin Mitte. Wheat beer was served in normal beer glasses and not in wheat glasses. There were no salt and pepper shakers at the table. You don't get a proper invoice, just an "information print" which suggests... well. The schnitzels were listed on the menu as €26 - but on the "information print" they were listed as over €30 (which I unfortunately noticed too late as we had to move on in a hurry). A servant sat down at the guest tables outside and smoked, which I also found to be quite rude and his clothes didn't look like a well-kept atmosphere either. For such prices you can simply expect more. The service wasn't particularly friendly, but okay.

Ottima cucina locale con pochi piatti ma ben fatti: ho mangiato un delizioso Roasted Pork cotto nella birra accompagnato da canederli e bevuto un'ottima birra bionda. Prezzi sopra la media ma ne vale la pena

Very nice shop with its own charm... On an evening when it was really busy, the waitress still kept a smile on her face and was able to serve all the guests appropriately. There's little to say about the food: the short menu guarantees really good dishes

Yes,, .. great traditional place.. good wines, good beers. Menu with southern German dishes with that certain something different. E.g. duck breast in chanterelle risotto with figs (!). Very nice composition. Unfortunately it failed because it wasn't fried hot enough, no crust, but almost uncut cartilage. The game was dry the time before. So from my point of view, an intervention in the kitchen in terms of care would be good. Still nice place.

Grocery in Mitte is a very cool little restaurant with very high quality classic German food. The selection of German and Austrian wines and beer from small German private breweries is very good. The service is super friendly and the atmosphere in an old grocery store is very good. Will be my new favorite restaurant in Berlin...

At the most acceptable food. During our visit it was quite crowded and the staff really tried.

Cozy, both food and the cold beers were good

We were the only guests in the restaurant in the afternoon and were seated right next to the counter. This made us feel very observed, as someone was often standing within a 3 meter radius of us. Otherwise the staff was very nice and friendly. We had the Wiener Schnitzel and the Käsespätzle. The food was very tasty, just the price was too expensive.

We found the restaurant by chance a few years ago and have been regulars there ever since when we are in Berlin. This time we tested the latest creations. Char on dark risotto with chicory and dryage duroc rack with octopus and samphire/tomato salad and fried potatoes. It was simply overwhelming again and can only be recommended. Always happy when we are in Berlin.

Delicious. Käsespätzle out of this world, and Bavarian roast pork absolutely delicious. Bert nice place to have dinner on a late summer evening.

Schnitzel and a beer 33Eurs is a bit excessive.

Very tasty and friendly service. Normal restaurant prices, fresh products have their price. We could pay by card.

Nein, das war nix. Ein gutes Schnitzel, dazu ein in Soße ertränkter Kartoffel-Gurkensalat. Bei der Bestellung: statt des Kartoffelsalates Pommes oder kartoffelähnliches? Nein, nicht möglich, weil die den einzelnen Gerichten vorbehalten sind und die Menge für eine weitere Portion nicht reicht. Die Ochsenbäckchen gut. Der Schweinebraten echtes Mittelmaß. Die Dunkelbiersoße hat ihren Namen nicht verdient (eine Brühe), die Semmelknödel zu fest und der Schweinebraten geht weicher und geschmacklich besser. Getrennt zahlen am Tisch? Nicht möglich. Die Qualität hält den Preisen nicht stand. Schade.

Difficult to post a photo, because we were almost in the dark. The staff at the restaurant are very kind, speak English and are also friendly. Good food, with a meat dish you can dine thanks also to the side dish. The prices are higher than in similar places, but the quality of the food seemed high. The only negative note is the light. The tables outside have no lighting (there is only a fake candle which makes a scene, but absolutely does not shed any light). Despite having chosen the "most illuminated" table (the only light comes from the dim and distant public lighting) we had to use the lights of our cell phones to be able to read the menus and eat. PS The other tables were less illuminated, because they were placed under large parasols that were open even at night, which prevented the lighting from reaching the table.

Accoglienza eccellente e personale super gentile, attento e disponibile. Cucina tedesca curata: abbiamo ordinato la Wiener Schnitzel e il Scheeinsbrayen abend sauerk e tutto molto buono con porzioni abbondanti. Da provare assolutamente. Prezzi un po’ alti rispetto alla media ma ne vale la pena.
