In the potato cellar, as the name suggests, all dishes revolve around potatoes. You might think that the potato is perfected in every dish. Unfortunately that is not the case. We all had fried potatoes with bacon and onions as a side dish, which we imagined would be slices or smaller cubes. We got potatoes that were cut into thirds, partly burnt, super greasy and, to our surprise, almost tasteless. We had fish, vegetarian, roast beef, schnitzel and a burger XXL. We all had to re-season several times and were absolutely not convinced by the taste. You pay around €20 to €30 per dish and given the quality, the price is absolutely not justified. The portions are generous, but it's no use if it doesn't really taste good. We had the feeling that they wanted to get rid of us quickly so that new customers could be served. We can't understand the many good reviews and wouldn't come again.

The service was extremely friendly to us. And it tasted very good 🤤 The best way to make a reservation is via Open.table.

Food was ok but the staff came very rarely and it was very dark, and there is another better restaurant next door.

We went to the potato cellar for the first time today. The food was super good. We can only recommend it. Important to reserve in advance. We will definitely come back next time we visit Hamburg.

The potato cellar is worth a visit! Simply because the dark cellar ambience is very rustic and cozy. The menu is very clear and, who would have guessed it, extremely potato-heavy :-))) No joke aside, for the potato lover, everything is included apart from fries, so there's nothing to complain about. BUT!!!! I think a Viennese-style schnitzel with a handful of fried potatoes for €25 and a large cola (0.4) for over €5 are quite generous (even by Hamburg standards). Ultimately the quality didn't justify the price! We also had the XXL burger for €18, which was advertised as having Angus beef. So the expectations were very high…I mean XXL & ANGUS BEEF…!!! But here too I have to say…a failure!!! The burger bun was already XXL but the supposed Angus beef patty got lost in the bun. I don't want to judge whether it was Angus or normal beef... I'm not a star chef. BUT it was definitely not a fresh, juicy beef patty but a very dry and dead fried meat patty (probably frozen). All in all, we were completely disappointed with the food. The staff is extremely friendly, attentive and on the ball! Our conclusion: “Kartoffelkeller has a rustic, cozy atmosphere and you should have been there if you are in Hamburg.” But there are definitely places where you get more (quality) for your money.

Beautiful and harmonious ambience and, as the name suggests, in what I think is a lovingly furnished cellar. The service was very friendly and easily accepted and took into account additional requests regarding the food order. The taste was very good and definitely a great opportunity to enjoy the food in a slightly different atmosphere. We were there for two days in a row and will come back on another vacation in Hamburg.

The potato cellar is definitely worth a visit. The restaurant is, as the name suggests, in the “basement”! The waiters/staff were all very nice and friendly. Regarding special requests when ordering food, the employees also implemented these without any problems. However, there is a 1 star deduction because the wooden chairs were very cold and unfortunately didn't have a cushion to sit on. But all in all, I'll definitely come back on my next visit.

Bad timing but no second chance. During my stay for work I have wanted to to the restaurant on many occasion as the photoes and the potatoes theme, I felt, nothing could wrong. On my last night I finally managed to to finish work early enough and after enjoying the sunset on the wharf I happily went downstairs to the very dark restaurant, it was busy, but not full. I have learned to wait to be placed but the man behind the counter in spite of having made eye contact blissfully ignored me after a few minutes, I decided to get closer and ask for a seat, there were a few single tables empty and one nearly in front of me. The waitress seemed really annoyed (kind of "another foreigner" face) by my broken "sprechen sie Einglisch?" and as I told her "fur 1", she sighed, shook her head and said "not tonight" as she turned her back on me forgetting I even existed, no sorry, no nothing. Totally unimpressed I left and will never com again that's a certainty Edit After posting the review, I wanted to check if I had just been unlucky... actually I feel I have been very lucky, the behavior of that waitress and the barman , the unavailable "empty" seats, the barely disguised racism toward foreigners, it all match my short lived experience. So my lucky star shinned that night, it took me away from that awful place and I went to have yet another beautiful fischbrötzen just down the street

I can only recommend this restaurant. The food was fantastic. The service was extremely friendly and very professional. Even our little dog was given water right away. The restaurant is very cozy. You just have to go there.

La experiencia debería haber sido agradable, la comida buena y la bienvenida cálida PERO lamentablemente a la hora de pagar, la gerente insistió en que el servicio NO estaba incluido, insistió en que no era como en Francia. Tomados por sorpresa, dejamos una propina grande que se agregó a un proyecto de ley ya sustancial. Amigos alemanes nos confirmarían más tarde que el servicio estaba efectivamente incluido. ¡Qué pena ser víctima de un comportamiento tan deshonesto! y ¡tratar a los turistas como vacas de dinero! Esta práctica no solo es deshonesta, sino que también perjudica la imagen de su restaurante y, más en general, la hospitalidad de la región. Tal actitud, encaminada a explotar la ignorancia de los clientes que pasan, es inaceptable. Espero que tome las medidas necesarias para evitar que otros clientes sean víctimas del mismo trato. En este punto siento que tengo que compartir mi experiencia para alertar a los futuros visitantes potenciales. Y NO SOMOS LOS ÚNICOS!!!!!!!!!!

The experience should have been pleasant, the food good and the welcome warm BUT unfortunately when it came to paying, the manager insisted that the service was NOT included, she insisted that it was not like in France. Taken by surprise, we left a large tip which was added to an already substantial bill. German friends would later confirm to us that the service was indeed included. What a shame to be the victim of such dishonest behavior! and to treat tourists like cash cows! This practice is not only dishonest, but it also harms the image of your restaurant and, more broadly, the hospitality of the region. Such an attitude, aimed at exploiting the ignorance of passing customers, is unacceptable. I hope you will take the necessary measures to prevent other customers from falling victim to the same treatment. At this point i feel i have to share my experience to alert potential future visitors. AND WE ARE NOT THE ONLY ONE !!!!!!!!!!!

Great service, delicious food, would be back again

Food was good but very overpriced. The burger was relatively large for 18.88 euros but unfortunately the meat was already lukewarm when it arrived. The sad tablespoon of coleslaw on the side was unfortunately a disappointment as it was actually really tasty. Drinks were grossly overpriced at 5.11 for 0.4L. According to the other people at the table, the other dishes on the menu were delicious but also relatively expensive. Service was good and our waitress was really nice and in a good mood. In the end, in my opinion, the begging for a tip was unnecessarily intrusive by explicitly asking everyone how much they would like to tip and strange comments were also made when I said a tip of 0 euros. Ambiance is a matter of taste and mine really wasn't. Way too narrow and dark. And for whatever reason, it was excessively warm.

Leider ist der Kartoffel Keller nicht mehr das was es mal war. Preis / Leistung stimmt hier nicht. Hatte mich so auf die Bratkartoffeln gefreut war leider ein totaler rein fall ohne Speck und Zwiebeln und dann noch aus der Fritteuse..... Da ist reich Luft nach ober mit der der Qualität .... kommen bestimmt nicht wieder

It's been a long time since I went to the potato cellar today. Unfortunately it no longer has anything to do with the old potato cellar. We missed the nice conditions in your potato sacks and the delicious potato casseroles. More German bourgeois cuisine at very high prices. Unfortunately, fried potatoes came from the deep fryer. Cola had almost no carbonation, and there were no complaints. Furniture still as it was 30 years ago. So that the benches squeak loudly when you sit on them. Unfortunately not again.

Had the pleasure of sitting downstairs. It’s a Lovely quaint spot, with a great atmosphere, candlelit dining, fantastic food and beer options and some of the friendliest and welcoming staff I’ve experience during my time in Hamburg. Will definitely be coming back here on my next trip.

As the name suggests, it's in the basement. Therefore difficult to access for people with disabilities. It's also very dark inside. Staff was OK. Unfortunately the food was very bland.

I visited in the summer, and stopped at this restaurant for a quick bit to eat. The potato soup was very good however the meat wasnt very good. It is overpriced for what it is and the waiter wasnt very nice or attentive at all. I think its because i only spoke english and was clearly a tourist but im not sure! I think I would not go again.

Premises: The restaurant is not suitable for tall people, especially with long legs. My partner and I were led to a table for two, which was very small. The hallways are narrow and the ceiling is very low. The "basement restaurant" is very dark. All in all very overwhelming. Service: The older gentleman with glasses (who turned out to be the waitress) warned greeting us in a very strict tone: "So you see what it looks like here. You have to wait longer until you get something" I know that the Hamburg style is a bit rougher, but I found it very borderline. Every now and then we called him to order something more or to ask for the bill. Then there was a: “Yes, yes, straight away” or a “Moooooment (annoyed). Eat: (Of course this is always a subjective opinion!) The Hoppel Poppel (yes, that's what the dish is called - you could also call it a farmer's breakfast or omelette) was very bland. Even seasoning with salt and pepper was hardly enough. The salad was too dry and there was no dressing. I needed more melted butter for the Thuringian dumplings. There were too few cubes of ham and too many onions. The salad side dish had the same problem as described above. Therefore, unfortunately for us, a disappointment.

That's what I call authentic, coming in and immediately diving into another world. We were there spontaneously with 5 people on Saturday evening and were warmly welcomed. The food was good and the location was perfect for our group!

On Friday evening we were guests with five people and had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. The food was exceptionally tasty and we felt well looked after right from the start. We would particularly like to highlight Mr. Pavel, who served us with great friendliness and attentiveness. Since we arrived shortly before the kitchen closed, he even came to us personally to ensure that our wishes could be prepared smoothly. We really enjoyed the evening and would like to thank you very much for the excellent service. We'll definitely be back!

Absolutely one of the most pleasant restaurants I have had the pleasure of experiencing in Hamburg so far! We were here with 4 adults and two children. We were warmly welcomed and the children (4 and 7) in particular were treated openly. The atmosphere is very cozy and a bit dim. There were coloring books and puzzle books for the children. The waitresses were super friendly and always available for a little chat. The food was home-style and of course focused on potatoes. Delicious. You could taste that they cook with love here. The portions were absolutely sufficient. We didn't find any special children's dishes on the menu, but we didn't ask about them either, perhaps something would have been possible. All in all, an outstandingly pleasant restaurant experience. We'll be back.

In una Amburgo praticamente tutta chiusa (domenica), abbiamo optato per questo locale un pochino fuori dalle traiettorie turistiche e ci siamo trovati benissimo. L'ingresso lascia un po' a desiderare, sembra di entrare in una cantina, ma dentro è bellissimo: soffitti a volta, lume di candela e personale attento e simpatico. L'ingrediente patata, ovviamente, regna sovrano. Abbiamo mangiato un hamburger di Angus delizioso e veramente taglia XXXL e un piatto tipico di Amburg a base di carne e patate veramente delizioso. Ottimo anche il rapporto qualità/prezzo.

I think it was okay but it is overhyped. I was expecting that each dish would just be made of potatoes (as advertised) but it more a "each dish has some potatoes ". There was also confusion when we ordered as in fact it was brought back something we didn't ordered. What we originally asked was not available 。So we changed to something else but yet got got something different again. In all this, with the wait, there was a big expectancy to leave a tip which we didn't feel right to give. If you want to go, go, but it is not as good as it is hyped about.

Last night we had dinner in the potato cellar. We were there about 45 minutes before our reservation, asked if we could come in and were warmly welcomed. The atmosphere is rustic and cozy and the food (I had the potato pancakes with salmon and horseradish, my husband had the sour meat with fried potatoes) was also very tasty. Only the fried potatoes had room for improvement, says my husband. The service was the best part of the evening. Typical Hamburg snout and great humor. However, you have to be able to deal with it. Please never change. For me a real original! We'd love to come back.

We made a spontaneous, short-term reservation online between Christmas and New Year and did not receive an email confirmation. When we arrived, we were asked about the reservation - "Yes, we have reserved, but we haven't received any confirmation yet" - We were then told in an extremely bitchy manner by a lady that we didn't reserve even if we hadn't received any confirmation - The reservation system (and the personal reception) still has room for improvement. But we still found space, the waiter was "amazing" and basically ran the place by himself - and yet everyone was always served and taken into consideration. The food was exactly what we expected and the portions were huge. We can happily recommend the potato cellar, but next time we would definitely call ahead and not rely on the online “reservation system”.

Today I ate Burger XXL with a friend. It tasted good but the meat was still raw in the middle. And why does the menu say “fried potatoes” instead of fried potatoes? If you get fries, write fries rather than fried “fried potatoes”.

I'm writing this review because I'm still in shock at how my mother was treated at this restaurant. She is a single parent and worked hard to ensure we had a lovely evening. It was a big deal for them to invite us here, even though the budget was tight. In the end she tipped €1.50 - more was simply not possible. However, the waiter returned the money and said that you shouldn't go out to eat if you can't afford a tip. This statement was incredibly condescending and disrespectful. My mother felt very bad, even though she only wanted the best for us. The food was okay, but this treatment is absolutely unacceptable. No one should have to feel like they are treated like this in a restaurant. I hope management will think about how to treat guests and show more respect in the future.

Nourriture correcte, assiettes bien remplies, mais si la commande est prise en 5 minutes , on a attendu plus de 20 minutes avant d'avoir nos assiettes ! Il était 15h à notre arrivée et quasiment 16h à notre départ, alors qu'on n'avait pris qu'un plat ! Le personnel qui nous a encaissé a exigé de l'argent pour le service en nous disant à 2 reprises que le service n'était pas inclu dans l'addition ( 20€ par plat, Burger ou Labskaus) et 7.99€ pour une bouteille d'eau de 75 cl!! - pas eu de choix). Le peu que j'ai laissé ne lui a pas suffit, et il a commencé à se lamenter...(Les Français....😭). Or il ne s'agit que de pourboire et si le service n'est pas à la hauteur, on n'en laisse pas !

Wir waren zu dritt hier an einem Sonntag Abend. Wir haben den Grünkohl und den Grünkohlauflauf gegessen und der war sehr lecker. Die Bratkartoffeln zum Grünkohl waren sehr kross, wie ich es mag, Die Bedienung war sehr freundlich und aufmerksam.

We were here last weekend, once for coffee and lunch and once for dinner. The food was great, classic German and well prepared. We were helped by a lovely entusiastic waitress and it was one of the highlights of our trip. If you encounter said waitress, be sure to order a hot cocoa with Bailey's, it will make her day!

The food was super tasty, but we also had the feeling (as mentioned here several times) that they wanted to get rid of us quickly. We knew that the table would only be available for us for 1 hour without a reservation, but that's no reason to intercept someone on the way from the toilet and ask what they wanted to eat - at least being able to take a quick look at the menu would have been great . Plus, it's absurd to look at our plates every 5 minutes to see if we're done yet. In the end, my half-full glass was cleared away after just 45 minutes, cashed in and goodbye 🫠 We didn't leave a tip, I've rarely eaten so stressed.

Everything was just right, the waiters were just incredibly great and simply charmed people with their humorous manner (even though it was really very busy). The food was also simply fabulous. Can't keep what it promises. Our food arrived at the table very late and more cold than warm. It didn't taste like shit, but it wasn't really anything special... It was incredibly hot in the place. Overall, our group didn't like it here. It's an impudence to the power of a thousand how they react to legitimate criticism here. As a restaurateur, you have to be able to tolerate it if guests don't like something.

The atmosphere was absolutely great, we stopped by for lunch while passing by on a Sunday. We entered from the basement entrance, I'm not sure if there is another entrance. The food was very delicious.

Wir hatten uns so auf den Kartoffelkeller gefreut. Die Bedienung war sehr freundlich. Daran gab es nichts auszusetzen. Das Essen dagegen nicht. Die Scholle war totgebraten ( aus der Friteuse?) und geschmacklich fast neutral. Das Fischfleisch sah gelblich, bräunlich aus. Ich konnte es nicht essen. Die Bratkartoffeln völlig überflutet. Habe stundenlang Magendrücken gehabt. Das Gericht meines Mannes (Schweinemedaillons) war ähnlich. Fleisch total durchgebraten, trocken und nichtssagend. Die Matjes waren ok, jedoch nicht frisch, sondern vorgefertigt aus Eimern?! Schade, der Kartoffelkeller war einmal so toll. Wir würden nicht wieder hingehen.

We went to the potato cellar twice and thought it was wonderful. The ambience, food and our waiter + owner - simply nice, funny and warm. We had a really great place and were able to sit there again this evening. Thank you for these two lovely evenings with you. We had pan fish, Bernese Rösti, pork medallions and schnitzel to eat. My highlight today: Homemade red jelly with vanilla ice cream. Simply wonderful. ❤️

Very nice shop with great staff and great food! Potato is definitely the culinary center here! And you notice it and you taste it. The spinach casserole is highly recommended, as is the house wine! Ein richtig urchiges Hamburger Lokal. Obwohl man in den Keller absteigt ist es im Restaurant relativ geräumig und wirklich sehr gemütlich. Wir haben fein gegessen und die Bedienung war sehr nett. Und hat Eagles rundum gut gefallen.

At 4:30 p.m. on a Monday with rainy weather everything was supposedly fully booked, no table left for one person, only with reservation, you are intercepted by the smoking waiter at the staircase in front of the door to the restaurant, what a shame!

Cozy, very well organized restaurant, friendly, funny and attentive waiters, great food and reasonable prices. Well, it's a little dark to decipher the menu, but you can solve it with your cell phone flashlight. We were very satisfied!

Reservations can be made today at 8:00 PM at the Kartoffelkeller. Ordered starter and main course. Starter came (large portion) and before we finished it, the main course was already next to us. Shame about the food, it went way too fast. At 8:45 PM everything was gone. After drinking our wine and water, we wanted to order another espresso at 9:15 PM, but unfortunately the coffee machine was already off!

The food is delicious, the prices are completely reasonable for Hamburg Hafen. Service is very friendly. All in all a recommendation.
