It was our first time here, and we only had a light meal. But the potato soup was absolutely delicious. The service was very friendly. Highly recommended.

The service was really nice and friendly, but the food wasn't that good. I had the veggie burger with fried potatoes, and some of them weren't even cooked through, and the restaurant is called Kartoffelkeller (Potato Cellar). The burger sauce just tasted sweet, and the prices weren't worth it. Plus, it was really stuffy, warm, and dark.

We booked a table for our anniversary through OpenTablet, and it went smoothly. We arrived a little early and were asked if we had booked. Our confirmation was then met with a "well, then you'll just have to wait." The fact that we had to wait wasn't a problem, but the lady's tone was a bit rude. We got our table and the menus. We ordered from the nice lady, and everything was fine at first. My husband ordered the potato soup; the ham was in lumps, and it was a clear soup, and unfortunately, very peppery. The main course arrived at our next table faster than ours, but everything was fine. The only bad thing was that the plates of the men at the next table and my husband's had been swapped. The man at the next table didn't notice and started eating. My husband and I realized it right away, but we had to wait five minutes for the waiter to come back. So, we women had to eat on our own, which I personally hate. The food came back very quickly, probably just dressed up and taken out again. The food was lukewarm and not exactly delicious. We used to enjoy going to the Kartoffelkeller often, but the service and quality have declined significantly. Personally, I think it's a real shame, because it's a lovely restaurant, but what good is that if everything else isn't right!

Fantastic staff, great drinks, delicious food and a gorgeous intimate spot for a bite to eat! If you find yourself in the area not sure where to go, come here. We loved every second!

On the one hand, it's quaint, on the other, it's a bit of a B-grade. Rustic decor in a cellar vault, service was quick for the first round, but then a bit inattentive; we had to ask a colleague to get another round. Up to this point, it would have been a full 5 stars, as all the tables were occupied and the restaurant was very busy. Now for the deductions. I ordered 5 dishes, and at almost 45 minutes, it took a bit too long, but the starter, a hearty potato soup (which tasted good, by the way), arrived quite quickly. My dish was herring fillets with a handmade classic remoulade, a good gravlax, and good fried potatoes. At this point, it would have been 4 stars. During the meal, I noticed solid, unchewable, very woody particles, some of which could have been bones, some of which could have been woody pieces from the side salad. These weren't chewable, and I draped them on the plate. I politely mentioned it to the waiter, who didn't apologize, but pointed out that they should have known that the new herring (meaning the fishing season) doesn't arrive until May, and that no Hamburg resident would order a matjes fillet now, and I should accept the bones. A couple at the next table overheard my comment and then spoke a little louder about MY faux pas. I felt uncomfortable being portrayed as a culinary idiot. 3 out of 5 dishes were good; after I complained, one of my friends didn't dare to comment on his meal, as the waiter's reaction already seemed inappropriate to me.

All potatoes! I've been coming here regularly for over 10 years, and it always feels like coming home. The food is very good, the staff friendly, and always has a joke ready. Highly recommended. A must-visit on any Hamburg vacation.

We've been here several times now and have never been disappointed. It feels like home here. The ambiance, the service, and the food. It's so incredibly delicious, just like Grandma's. I'm thrilled with this restaurant and always enjoy coming back when I'm in Hamburg. A definite MUST for anyone who loves good food. The prices are also reasonable for what you get. The location: Great. Deichstraße, a street in downtown Hamburg, boasts historical value as the last remaining ensemble of old Hamburg townhouses. The food was authentically delicious. The staff was extremely relaxed and friendly. Only the longer wait due to the ill server required patience... We'd love to come back to Hamburg 👍

The place is beautiful, with wooden tables and candles… the service was also very friendly, but we weren't thrilled with the food… the potatoes were very greasy and not very good. Maybe we made the wrong choice. The place is certainly very pretty.

We were here for dinner yesterday and were lucky to catch a quiet Monday without a reservation. 😊 We were shown straight to our table and given the menu. There's something for every taste, and everything has something to do with potatoes. We opted for the turkey steak and the Swedish potato casserole (+ side salad). The drinks and food arrived promptly and were excellent. The portions are generous, so you certainly won't go home hungry 😉 The food is also very good in terms of quality and taste! 👍🏽 The Kartoffelkeller has its own charm, and you can escape from everyday life here, slow down, and relax. The experience is crowned by the excellent service! Fast and on the ball, always with a quick joke on their lips, and simply Nordic warmth. We felt more than comfortable and didn't want to leave 😊 We'll be back and can only recommend eating here to everyone! 😊

A quaint cellar steeped in history. Decent food, friendly service.

After reading the reviews, we were about to cancel our reservation. But as the saying goes, "See for yourself and form your own opinion." We had a delicious meal today with nine people, and everyone was very satisfied with their dishes. We highly recommend it. We'd be happy to go back.

We had reserved a table for four people. The table directly to the right of the entrance was so dark that ordering would have been impossible without a flashlight from our smartphone. The small candle didn't really help. Basement atmosphere or not, but a little light would have been welcome. We noticed on our way to the restroom that there are more welcoming tables. The service was simply overwhelmed on Saturday evening, a common occurrence in the restaurant industry these days. The food was of good quality and reasonable for the price. Unfortunately, we can't recommend it, and we won't be returning.

Great location in the heart of Hamburg, right on the canal – a truly lovely spot. It's incredibly cozy inside, and you immediately feel at home. The food and drinks were truly delicious. We had the panfish, which we highly recommend! The prices are typical for Hamburg, but reasonable. The service was really nice, especially the gentleman at the bar who served us excellently. The food wasn't that great. The turkey steak was completely dry, and the Indian potato casserole had more cheese than anything else, especially with cheap canned fruit. Absolutely unacceptable for these prices.

This restaurant was a stroke of luck and something special. The place initially seems quite dark (with all the candles, you could even call it romantic), but it brightens up towards the back. We received a warm welcome from the waitress and, because of our children, were given a table right away, even though we hadn't made a reservation. All four dishes we ordered were very good and plentiful. The selection finally offered something other than pizza and burgers. The service was extremely fast and unaffected by its brisk, friendly nature, which we will definitely remember fondly. The odd prices on the menu are also strange (e.g., €38.88). We'll definitely be back and bring friends!

The food, and especially the ambiance, are absolutely perfect. But the service is unfriendly beyond compare. Even a request to wipe the sticky table is met with an eye roll.

It's inconceivable that they charge you 7 euros for a 750ml bottle of water.

We really liked this restaurant❤️ Having been unable to have a main course and dessert at one meal because the dishes were too generous, we returned the next afternoon to enjoy the desserts. They were excellent! The dishes are original and well-prepared. A special thank you to the waitress who has a tattoo on her left arm with her grandmother's date of birth. I learned of my grandfather's death while we were on the restaurant's terrace, and she was so kind to comfort and support me.

We tried herring twice today in various variations – fresh and delicious! The fried potatoes were perfectly crispy, and the portions were huge. To finish, we had Kaiserschmarrn with vanilla ice cream, which was simply fantastic – even though we were already full, we couldn't resist. Highly recommended, we'd love to come back!

Strange restaurant with potatoes in all sauces very slow

We find the food very delicious and a nice area to sit out in a Sunday afternoon. This was our last meal here in Hamburg and I’m glad that we did it in this place. Their disc shape potato was great. Spare ribs, burger are very good.

A very unfriendly waitress greeted us immediately and told us we could "forget about getting a table." Even though a family was just leaving, we continued to be rudely turned away. The tone toward other guests was also rude. We decided not to eat there. Unfortunately, it was a disappointment.

If you bring a flashlight and reading glasses, it's a real basement with limited space, with the right smells, very authentic. If you like that kind of thing. The waitress was excellent, no matter how busy it got; there's strength in calm. Excellent and a big compliment. The menu was straightforward, but the pork medallions were actually served crispy and cooked through, sub-par. The schnitzel was good, but unfortunately, not an option for those with gluten intolerance. I can't and won't recommend it to anyone, except for the young waitress. Felt under the chair legs would reduce the noise level somewhat.

The paint is peeling off the ceiling in the basement. The burger was cold, the patty tiny, and the sauce bland. Any fast-food chain could do better. The fried potatoes were carelessly fried potato lumps. Questions about allergies were already too much for the waitress, even though it wasn't busy. Not worth a visit...

I discovered this unique place by chance. You can reserve tables until 8:15 PM because the kitchen closes at 9:00 PM! Luckily, the staff is helpful and accommodated us despite the late hour. We sat outside and enjoyed a good beer, some good food, and the company of the staff. The quietness of the place is particularly noteworthy!

The ambiance was impeccable; we sat in the basement with a river view. The restaurant boasts historic decor. The food was delicious; we had schnitzel and a potato cake for dessert. I highly recommend it; it's close to St. Nicholas Church.

The food didn't live up to expectations: I had potatoes with leaf spinach, topped with cheese, but unfortunately, it was rather poorly seasoned (e.g., it lacked nutmeg), which gave the taste a certain 'blandness.' My wife chose herring, and the waitress brought it with a very rude, sexist remark—that was not only unprofessional, but also inappropriate. Overall, we cannot recommend this restaurant and will not be returning."

The atmosphere here is very nice, and the cellar is rustic and cozy. The service is very friendly, and the fried potatoes are exceptionally delicious. Unfortunately, the burger was one of the worst we've ever eaten. No cheese on it, the bun was pre-made, barely seasoned, and the meatball was overcooked. Perhaps we simply chose the wrong dish, despite the "house recommendation." The other dishes at neighboring tables looked good, and the fried potatoes, as mentioned, were very tasty.

The only thing that made looking at the menu a bit difficult was that it was actually quite dark, but: It's a cellar vault... and if you don't arrive too late, you can sit outside.
