Restaurant Hülsmannshof in Essen

We went to the Hülsmannshof for a goose meal and were very impressed. The meat is tender, juicy and crispy at the same time, the sauce, red cabbage and dumplings are delicious. The delicious sauce was also made available to take home when it was served. Courteous, professional service with the right dose of present and unobtrusive. The atmosphere is very pleasant and the tables are not too close together, so you have enough privacy and the volume level was pleasant despite the full house. Thank you for this thoroughly successful evening.

Unfortunately we couldn't have coffee there. The restaurant doesn't open until 5 p.m., even though it was Sunday.

We ate with 8 people and all had very tasty dishes. The staff was friendly and helpful. The restaurant can be recommended.

Very cosy, nice service, excellent food and really large portions! Shared an appetizer platter that would be seen as full dinner elsewhere and then struggled with the main course (a nice goose) but it was so soft we just had to polish the plates...

We (3 people) decided on a Sunday to go out to eat at the “Hülsmannhof”. We had fond memories of the restaurant. Friendly welcome, reserved table was ok, attractive interior, friendly service without big “time gaps”, even though the restaurant was busy, menu with a large selection. Prices are “still reasonable”. We chose: bottle of water, 2x Lugana, 1x ginger ale, appetizer platter Hülsmannhof, 1x veal schnitzel with fries, 2x fish variation (salmon, John Dory, shrimp) coffee. So: until then, very good. Conclusion: it would have been a successful evening if everything hadn't been ruined by impossible behavior at the end. Open until 10 p.m. However, at 8:30 p.m., several people began to rearrange the restaurant with loud noises. Reason after speech: “We have a big funeral on Wednesday and want to finish work on time” (Monday and Tuesday are closed) So we were catapulted out 1.5 hours before closing time. That's not possible and led us to the realization: For 165 € with 3 people there are various restaurants in Werden and the surrounding area with very good food and a very good "feel-good atmosphere"

Good choice of dishes and very good cakes. The restaurant is located in an idyllic setting on the edge of a small wooded valley which invites walks just before or after stopping at the restaurant.

Restaurant HülsmannsHof I just want to address one topic today. First of all: The dishes here have been really good for years and the standard has been kept to my taste. Service was also good on my last visit. Ambience very nice.. But what I would like to complain about at this point is this CANDY TABLE!!! You could also call it the complaining area or parental stress zone!! (Quite comparable to the well-known children's lock zones at the checkouts in the supermarket; also an absurdity for stressed parents) Hello -- does this have to be in a restaurant? In my opinion - No!! I'm guessing whoever set up this table doesn't have any children of their own!? It can't be about sales!? Or maybe for the child's well-being (feeling) -- or maybe to fuel Karius and Backtus?? Yes, yes - I know, with well-behaved children that shouldn't be a problem!? If you know any, congratulations!! Well, I wish all parents the nerve they need ;-) I wish all guests who might want to enjoy their food in peace the equanimity and understanding for the "sweet" little ones who fall into this trap! With this in mind, I wish all guests a blessed appetite in the always beautiful HülsmannsHof! Nothing is eaten as hot as it is cooked ;-)

Still one of our favorite restaurants. We celebrated our wedding here 10 years ago and always enjoy going here, our children and mothers also love it. Very nice atmosphere, friendly service and a very nice terrace in summer.

Visit Hülsmannshof September 19, 2024, two children, four adults. Food ordered: 2 rump steaks from grass-fed beef with fried potatoes and garden salad - both salads were missing, one was brought as dessert upon request, the other was completely missing. The fried potatoes didn't have enough salt, but were very fatty. The "size" of the portions was shockingly manageable, we had to eat extremely slowly so as not to appear to be lurchers. The meat was tasty and to the point. Beef fillet/pork fillet was ordered twice, once as on the menu and once salad instead of vegetables. This special request was forgotten, the vegetables in both dishes were too salty and there was no salt in the gratin. The pork fillet was excellent, the grain of the beef was reminiscent of sauerbraten or pulled pork, hopefully the maturity wasn't too advanced... A breaded pork schnitzel with fries was specifically ordered for a child without any side dishes; here, as on the menu, it came with fried egg and bacon. For the second, larger child, who has had a gluten intolerance for years and bravely eats according to the rules, the order was beef fillet with fries - here the meat was covered with sauce that was simply not allowed for the child. The waiter suggested that Simply putting the meat on another plate, which of course isn't possible. The waiter responded to our slowly increasing impatience quite trustingly with "relax, everything will be fine"!! Just as inappropriate is the confidential question: any more dessert for “you”? On the other hand, the innkeeper's reaction to a personal description of the case was positive - he immediately offered a reasonable discount. Despite everything, we didn't let the birthday invitation be spoiled, but another visit there is certainly rather questionable...

We celebrated our wedding at the Hülsmannshof - and it was perfect. We had a separate room plus a terrace. The buffet was delicious and varied, there was something for everyone. The drinks were well mixed and strong. And the service... We had a lady who just looked after us the whole afternoon/evening. I think there are hardly any people who can match her in terms of attention and friendliness, that was really world class. We and all our guests went home full, drunk and happy. Thanks to the entire Hülsmannshof team - you played a crucial role in making this celebration a success. If I could, I would give 6 stars too.

We received so much positive feedback from our colleagues. The organization on site was excellent with almost 300 people. We would love to come back for the next company party!

A country house restaurant. The half-timbering divides the large room into smaller areas, which emphasizes the cozy ambience. Very attentive and nice service. We had the beef broth which was excellent. The wild mushrooms in cream sauce and the boiled beef as well. Really good, down-to-earth and honest cuisine that doesn't pretend to be anything else. We'd love to come back.

The food is great and the location is absolutely beautiful. However, you notice how annoyed the waitresses are when it gets busier. Training could help.

The four of us ate in the beer garden today. All 4 dishes and the dessert were very tasty and to the point. The service was extremely friendly and accommodating. In my opinion, the price matches the quality and the ambience. We will be very happy to come back.

I know the Hülsmannshof from the time when it was still “Bauer Barkhof”. The restaurant is beautifully located between the Mühlbachtal and the Magarethenhöhe. Restaurant in a rustic half-timbered house with a great beer garden. The food is German with Mediterranean influences. Large menu with a wide selection. Not exactly cheap, but worth the price and the items were quite large throughout, so we didn't manage to finish dessert after the starter and main course. The service is super nice, but sometimes a bit overwhelmed when the beer garden is full (which isn't great, but then it's understandable... we're happy to wait). Overall, a top recommendation.

Sad what has become of this great classic restaurant. Since the kitchen management changed a few years ago, the menu and the food have been a joke. The portions are quite meager and the prices are outrageous. It's a shame, because the ambience of the restaurant is one of the most beautiful in Essen.

I was a guest at a wedding today. However, I noticed how a younger waitress was being shouted at by another waitress over a small thing. She seemed very affected by the situation as she even cried. I felt very uncomfortable, especially because the screaming was unjustified.

Terrible… We had lunch at Hülsmanshof today and unfortunately noticed that another waitress was yelling at a young girl. The girl then started to cry, but no one paid any attention to her and they just continued to pick on her. Never again !!!

We recently celebrated our wedding here and were thrilled with the overall package. From the first contact, through the preliminary discussions, to the day of the wedding, the entire team supported us professionally and sympathetically. In our opinion, the service, quality and selection of food and drinks couldn't have been better. On the day of the wedding, the Hülsmannshof team was always at our side and was always one step ahead, so we didn't have to worry about anything. The day was as relaxed for us as we had hoped. The ambience of the location with the adjacent terrace and garden also provides that certain something. We felt completely in good hands. Many thanks to the entire team!

Hello, I was at the Hülsmannhof today and unfortunately I noticed a young employee being yelled at by another older employee. This experience there was very unpleasant for me personally. The young waitress was totally upset and continued to be shouted at by the other older waitress. For me personally it's a no go, I won't be coming back...

We had dinner at Hülsmannshof on Friday. We sat outside in nice weather. The service staff were very friendly and attentive. The strawberry punch as an aperitif was a poem and both the main courses and the dessert (dessert plate) were incredibly tasty 😋. Of course there are cheaper restaurants, but we found the price-performance ratio absolutely reasonable. It was an extremely successful evening and we would be happy to come back.

We ate there for the first time today. However, I have to differentiate my assessment. The ambience was clearly very well maintained, inviting and appealing. We felt comfortable in this regard and ate outside. With Dogan we had a very nice and courteous waiter who scored points with humor and attentiveness, but was never intrusive. We also liked the service. The food was honestly mediocre. I had the schnitzel with South Tyrolean bacon and fried egg. The schnitzel was freshly prepared and not a convenience product. That's basically good. However, it wasn't seasoned at all and actually tasted more like frying fat. I actually couldn't eat the fried potatoes, but of course I tried them but they only tasted like oil and fat. No taste of its own and unfortunately not crispy either. I told the waiter that when asked. I haven't been able to find out whether anything will happen as a result. Unfortunately, the presentation of the food wasn't successful either, no garnish on the plate, no decoration, not even a few herbs sprinkled on top. Unfortunately it was very carelessly prepared, which we both found to be a shame. Conclusion: nice atmosphere, but we wouldn't come back again just because of the food.

Beautiful, extremely expensive restaurant in a wonderful ambience

The food was good overall. There are drawbacks for the fact that the fried potatoes were drowned in oil and the fries were too salty. The portion size of the fried potatoes was also inadequate. Yesterday we were a larger group of 16 people. Only one employee was responsible for us the entire time. That wasn't nearly enough. The drinks didn't arrive on time. We would probably have consumed significantly more if we hadn't had to wait so long for our drink orders. However, what leads to the poor service rating here is the time management for the main course. The Hülsmannshof sees itself as a restaurant in the upper price range, which is certainly justified in terms of taste. However, what cannot be the case in this context is that individuals have already eaten their food before others can even begin to eat. For example, in one dish, fries were requested instead of fried potatoes. The fries took until the end of the entire meal to arrive. The dish itself, of course, initially came with fried potatoes. In addition, a main course was completely forgotten, which was then delivered later when all other dishes had already been eaten. The service employee himself apparently had no idea what he was serving. First, a Viennese schnitzel was referred to as the “pork fillet,” then the ox cheeks were referred to as the “pork fillet.” In the third attempt, the pork fillet with the chanterelle cream was actually called “pork fillet”. A success! Of course, this always completely captured the attention of the entire table, as no one had any idea what was ultimately being served and who had to go to it. Of course, we were able to recognize this relatively quickly. However, it's still really annoying when you're constantly ripped out of the conversation. Because it wasn't the case that the dishes arrived at the same time, as already mentioned, it was more the case that the main courses trickled in one at a time and then every time a big breakdown had to be made about what they actually were so that the person could who had ordered it could be identified. It has to be said that the store was nowhere near full yesterday. We definitely need to work on the timing. Otherwise it's just not worth eating there with a larger group. In my opinion, if you spend around €50 per person, no matter how good the food is, if the service isn't right, I'll still be in a really bad mood for that price. To put it briefly: Groups of up to four people per table are fine. Groups with a larger number of people should eat elsewhere.

Used to be one of my favorite restaurants. Great location, really nice outdoor dining, nice service, reasonable Prices. Unfortunately, apart from the location and the outdoor catering, everything has developed disadvantageously. An attempt with several friends last month confirmed our experiences from 2022 and 2023. It's a shame.

We were with a group of 46 people and decided on a buffet. When the weather was nice, we were able to enjoy the aperitif on the terrace. Starters were already set at the table. The buffet was varied and had something for everyone. Price-performance was top. Always my pleasure

After our visit to Margarethenhöhe, 30 people (previous reservation and meal selection) stopped at the Hülsmannshof in the evening. Food / ambience very good and even better than very good service! A very nice end to our "A day at Krupp's".

Recommended food!! Nice beer garden!!!

The food was always very good. However, the service was not like it used to be. The very friendly and experienced service was supported by seemingly untrained staff. They were also friendly, but you could tell that something wasn't going well. The speech, the timing, the overall mannerisms were not appropriate for the location and the occasion. Nothing dramatic at all, perhaps due to the lack of skilled workers, but it just didn't fit into the picture. The two of us spent €100 on our wedding day. We'd love to come back, but it's still a very good address. Only those who attach great importance to this point could perhaps be “surprised”.

Excellent - tasty - nice service

A beautifully located restaurant with friendly staff. We stopped there after a walk with our dogs and took a seat in the outdoor area. The outdoor area is well maintained and invites you to linger. We had several snacks to eat, along with cappuccino and beer. Both the cappuccino and the little things were convincing. Everything was beautifully prepared and tasted very good. Until dessert... On the contrary, the dessert was a total failure for us. We ordered the Kaiserschmarrn. Actually a wonderful dessert, nice and fluffy, juicy, with a sugar-caramel crust on top. Completely different here - the Kaiserschmarrn was rubbery and barely juicy, sometimes even dry. The light caramel crust on top was either absent or only present in a homeopathic way. All in all, it gave the impression that this dessert wasn't freshly prepared. It was just warmed up (a no-go with a Kaiserschmarrn) - that's a terrible shame because the "side dishes" the vanilla ice cream and also the cream were great - not too sweet, nice consistency, there was nothing wrong with it. But the Kaiserschmarrn didn't work at all and I can't recommend it to anyone. Unfortunately, we are left with a somewhat mixed overall picture. Great ambience, great service paired with a great location. There were also delicious little things but a dessert that, in our presentation, was more of a canteen level in terms of taste and sensory quality - a shame. Let's hope it was just a bad dessert posting day... ————————————————————— Addition: In the meantime we were here again, which unfortunately led me to add to my review... Unfortunately nothing has changed in terms of food and ambience. This time the dessert tasted better, but with an ice cream sundae it was also much simpler than Kaiserschmarren. But unfortunately it was precisely the dessert that surrounded it that caused me to revise my criticism downwards. We were there in the afternoon after a long walk and after the main course we spontaneously wanted a dessert. My partner spotted the other guests' waffles and so we quickly ordered waffles with ice cream and the ice cream sundae for dessert + cafe. The order was taken and we waited happily... until the dessert came or didn't come. Instead of informing the guest in advance that the waffles were out, the waitress only came to the table with a café and an “ice cream sundae”. Only then did we find out that the waffles were out. AN ABSOLUTE NO-GO! If we had known this beforehand, they could have decided or we would have canceled the dessert. But you only have the choice to share the ice cream or eat it separately. Speaking of ice cream. Unfortunately I forgot to take a photo. But it's rare to see an ice cream sundae so carelessly served in a soup bowl - the taste of the ice cream was OK. For my taste, it would have easily needed only half of the eggnog. It had been drowned a little... So what's the bottom line? A restaurant with ambitions, which are only fulfilled when it comes to starters and main courses. Our desserts have been rather mixed so far.

At the Hülsmannshof the guest is always in very good hands, receives the best advice and is meticulously looked after by very friendly and efficient staff who don't let themselves be disturbed and always keep an attentive eye on the table. The quality of the food and drinks are at star level! This was my third visit and I'll be back more often because it's just so much fun to eat here! Whether as a couple or with friends, the Hülsmannshof is one of the best addresses in the Ruhr area!

Everything was very clean, friendly and tasty. Prices were high. The only flaw. I reserved a table for 6 people and got a table on the first floor. I found it very unpleasant that I had to walk on all fours due to my size. You could have asked the customer when making the reservation how tall he was I think everything over 1.80m should sit on the ground floor.

We were there just before the kitchen closed. Nevertheless, after the main course (amazing, crispy, delicious schnitzel), the kitchen crew waited especially for our dessert order and then conjured up an incredibly delicious Kaiserschmarrn for us. The service was very accommodating. In the half-timbered house you can sit really comfortably on several floors. Overall, we had a great time and would love to come back. We can only recommend a visit.

During summer, dining in the Biergarten is highly recommended. The menu and also the food you get is more standard than something special. The menu includes a broad collection of German restaurant standards but that’s it. Go there for the nice historic setting in an old farmhouse.

Wir wollten mit Freunden endlich einmal wieder "klassisch" essen und haben uns hierzu den Hülsmannshof ausgesucht. Mit Reservierung hatten wir auch an einem Samstagabend kein Platzproblem - empfehlenswert! Vier verschiedene Hauptmahlzeiten und alle waren hervorragend! Der Service sehr aufmerksam und so waren schnell drei Stunden um! Der nächste Besuch folgt bestimmt!

Sehr schönes Ambiente. Die Gerichte sind ein Gedicht. Das Fleisch wird absolut perfekt zubereitet. Ein Genuss für den Gaumen. 🫶 Das Personal sehr freundlich und aufmerksam.

Edit 06.01.24.... waren mal wieder essen. Wieder super lecker alles. Kellner glaube Atilla war super nett und freundlich. Einziges manko diesmal war, das dass Essen bei uns allen nicht mehr Heiss war. Vielleicht kann man daran was ändern. Wurden leider nucbt gefragt wie es war. Daher haben wir es niemanden gesagt. Aber meckern auf hohem nivau. Ein sehr romantisch und gemütliches restaurant. Im Sommer kann man auch draußen sitzen und für Kinder ist ein kleiner Spielplatz vorhanden. Der Empfang war sehr freundlich und man fühlt sich wohl. Das Restaurant ist ein renoviertes Fachwerkhaus. Der Charme und die Gemütlichkeit ist unbeschreiblich. Das Essen war sehr lecker und alle Zutaten frisch. Man schmeckt das hier noch alles selbst gemacht wird. Die Auswahl ist genau richtig, nicht zuviel nicht zu wenig. Einen Stern Abzug gibt es dadurch das manche Kellnerinnen genervt gewirkt haben. Leider habe ich auch sehen müssen wie eine Kellnerin die Augen verdreht hat nach dem sie einen Tisch den Rücken gekehrt hat. Ich kann verstehen das manche Gäste echt anstrengend sind. Aber sowas gehört sich nur wenn es kein Gast mehr sehen kann.

Hervorragend abgestimmtes Hauptgericht, tolle Nachspeisen-Karte. Aufmerksames, freundliches und engagiertes Personal . Wir kommen wieder!

Wir haben uns kurz vor Weihnachten etwas Gutes getan und haben zu zweit ausgiebig ein 3-Gänge-Menü gegönnt. Und ich muss sagen, dass wir absolut zufrieden waren. sowohl die Kartoffelreibeplätzchen mit dem Lachstatar und Salat als auch die Rindfleischsuppe mit Fädele wäre sehr gut. Der Gänsebraten war vorzüglich. Zart und nicht trocken! Der Rotkohl und die Maronen weihnachtlich zubereitet. Zum Abrunden noch ein leckeres kleines Afagato. Der Service war sehr hilfsbereit. Das Ambiente angenehm rustikal. Wir kommen gerne wieder 👍

Ich war zu einer Weihnachtsfeier mit 150 Personen und alle haben Platz gefunden über 2 Etagen. Der Service war ausgezeichnet und das Essen erst recht. Wir konnten auch Reste in Tupperdosen mit nach Hause nehmen. Draußen waren auch Tische (überdacht, da es geregnet hat) mit Getränken wie Kaffee oder Glühwein. Alles in einem es war wunderbar. Ein großes Lob an den Koch und seine Mitarbeiter.

Empfehlenswertes Traditionhaus !

Am Donnerstag habe ich meine Hochzeit hier gefeiert. Eine andere Location ist abgesprungen, der Hülsmannshof ist recht spontan eingesprungen. Das Essen war super, der Tisch super schön gedeckt. Am allertollsten war die Bedienung: auf einmal konnte ich schlecht atmen, mir wurde schummrig und übel - ich hatte eine Panikattacke. Das Personal hat sich so toll um mich gekümmert, obwohl die Lokalität komplett voll war und wirklich viel zu tun war! Immer wieder wurden mir kalte Tücher gebracht und gut zugeredet - das hätte besser wirklich nicht laufen können!! Liebsten Dank für diesen schönen Tag und das Engagement! Wir kommen auf jeden Fall wieder - nächstes Mal hoffentlich ganz entspannt ohne Panik ;)
