Restaurant Hülsmannshof in Essen

We were there again today after two years. Since the restaurant is closing on June 22nd, 2025 (for renovations and then a change of tenant), it's already in a state of decline. The outdoor seating is still great, and the food and service were rather lacking. Two dishes (Cordon Blue) were missing salad, and all four dishes were lukewarm, not hot. Since I complained about this, I got a small beer from the house, which isn't usually available outside, just 0.4, as was only 0.4 of a Coke Zero. The Cordon Blue with fried potatoes is way too expensive at €29.90, as is the Wiener Schnitzel at €28. My husband had fried black pudding with apple and onion, which is actually a starter there for €13. When I asked if it could be had as a main course, he said yes, so it was an additional €4.50 for the mashed potatoes. The portion was quite small and not hot. Some of the wines are already out. The service was very slow and at times inattentive (but friendly), and it took over an hour for the food to arrive. I wish the owners all the best in their new restaurant, Wiener Wunder, in Rüttenscheid (next to the district court)! We will definitely try it out and hopefully we'll be satisfied again, just like we used to be at Hülsmannshof!

We celebrated our wedding there 10 years ago and were now there for dinner on our 10th wedding anniversary. Unfortunately, we couldn't revive the great experiences and memories from back then. The service was mixed, we had 4 people who more or less took care of us. The food wasn't cheap in terms of price, but it was very tasteless and carelessly prepared. The portion is also clear. I'm afraid that since you're leaving the Hülsmannshof soon, the hosts have already finished setting up shop. I can't explain what I experienced there any other way. Really a shame and a disappointing evening.

We went to Hülsmannshof for coffee with 20 people. There were exactly 3 (!) different types of cake and only two pieces of one, so that the other customers had to choose a different cake. Okay: The selection wasn't that big anymore...

We were participants in a large birthday party. The event was atmospherically arranged in the cozy room. Welcome and dessert took place in the beautiful beer garden. The service was good and quick. In our opinion everything went well. The food didn't quite suit our taste: As a starter there was Italian antipasti served at the table: delicious. The main course was served as a buffet: the meat was very good. But the vegetables weren't fresh, they were canned peas and carrots. The potato gratin was watered down and the jacket potatoes were shriveled. The cheese plate was disappointing because it had very little choice and was small. The dessert was excellent: there were different types of dessert served in glasses. Overall, it is certainly difficult to find a suitable restaurant for a large mixed group. The Hülsmannshof can be recommended for such events.

We were able to test all sorts of creations here as part of a celebration. All dishes were fresh and individually prepared, the quality is second to none. The staff is really friendly and regularly asks if anything else is needed, the location is super classic and well maintained.

You should avoid this place. Quality has fallen enormously, but prices have risen sharply. The fact that the owner is leaving the location says it all...

So far, the Hülsmannshof has always been a guarantee for a nice atmosphere and good food. The atmosphere was right, but the food was of poor quality and you could see and taste that the kitchen did not welcome the guest. A schnitzel should come from the kitchen freshly fried and not sticky. The pork fillet as well. The vegetables consisted of two small cauliflower and broccoli florets, not al dente, but hard, and two small cubes of pumpkin. The hint of thin pepper sauce didn't deserve the name. The blob of potato casserole on the plate was edible, but nothing more. It's a shame, we would have liked to say goodbye to the Hülsmannshof with other memories. We wish you a good start in Rüttenscheid, with the knowledge that a guest can see and taste whether the kitchen cooks with passion when a schnitzel costs 28 euros. Maybe take a look at the Bonner Hof in Kettwig, it is always a guarantee for a great culinary evening and the warmth is visible and noticeable.

My wife was in this restaurant to have a drink in a relaxed atmosphere - not an unusual request for an early evening. Unfortunately, after a short time we were signaled that we should clear the table because we had not ordered anything to eat and other guests would need it for dinner. This attitude is absolutely incomprehensible to me and not very hospitable, especially since the restaurant was empty. A restaurant lives not only from the cuisine, but also from the service and the atmosphere. Feeling unwanted as a guest just because you don't order food leaves a bitter aftertaste - regardless of the quality of the food (which in this case we didn't even want to try). Conclusion: Anyone who only pays attention to sales per table and not to genuine hospitality has not understood the meaning of gastronomy. We definitely won't be coming back.

Quiet and very beautiful place. Very spacious restaurant with a large outdoor terrace. Family lunch. Delicious food but nothing special. Rather high prices.

We finally wanted to eat “classic” again with friends and chose the Hülsmannshof. With a reservation we didn't have a problem with space even on a Saturday evening - recommended! Four different main meals and all were excellent! The service was very attentive and three hours went by quickly! The next visit will definitely follow!

Although I have lived in Essen for over 10 years, I have never been to Hülsmannshof before. Now, on the occasion of my birthday, I was looking for a restaurant that could serve my wife an original Wiener Schnitzel. And so we came to the Hülsmannshof. We were pleasantly surprised to find such a restaurant in this old half-timbered house. Unfortunately the weather wasn't suitable for a beer garden at this early time of year, but we'll definitely try it out this year. The service was very friendly, relaxed and open to jokes. We were served quickly. To eat we had the aforementioned Wiener Schnitzel and for me a rump steak with an onion-mustard crust. The schnitzel was served with fries, cucumber salad, lemon (very nice in a bag so that no seeds fall out!) as well as anchovies and a dollop of cranberries. According to my wife, the veal was perfectly fine, but unfortunately a bit bland or lacking in taste. And instead of the anchovies (very special), more cranberries would be desirable. My steak, on the other hand, couldn't really be made any better. Perfectly medium, very tender and tasty with a great onion-mustard crust. The mixed salad had a very tasty honey dressing and I would also have the fried potatoes again and again. Conclusion: All in all, a successful meal. PS: For dessert there was affogato: espresso, vanilla ice cream and cream in separate bowls with hollow hips. Simple but very good!

We were here with 12 people to celebrate a birthday - including two grandparents who were over 80 years old and four other guests over 60. What started as a beautiful evening ended in an absolute nightmare: 10 of us became seriously ill with severe gastrointestinal problems afterwards! Something like this can be life-threatening, especially for older people. The fact that almost the entire group fell ill at the same time suggests blatant lack of hygiene or spoiled food. We have reported the incident and hope that an official inspection will take place immediately. I will never enter this restaurant again.

Attention salmonella! All well and good but 11/12 of our guests had food poisoning. Including people over 80 and 1.5 years old. We've never experienced anything like this before. The restaurant owner didn't even come to us with a refund and denies any blame. Although the findings were confirmed by the doctor through samples.

We had dinner there for the first time with our in-laws. We really liked the atmosphere. It is very cozy and lovingly designed. Despite the fact that it was very crowded, you could have a good conversation and it wasn't too loud. The staff is very fond of children. A chair was immediately available for our 2-year-old daughter. A smaller plate and fork were also brought immediately. We all had different dishes. From meat to fish. The portions are generous and we had no problem getting full. We weren't disappointed in terms of taste either. Only the salad my mother-in-law ordered wasn't entirely convincing, but the same applies here: it's just a matter of taste. All in all, we liked it and would like to come back.

It's a good home-style restaurant. The surroundings are beautiful, you can take a nice walk in the forest right after eating. We were there for brunch and we really enjoyed the food. A large selection from the cold buffet and a great lunch buffet. You will feel very full and satisfied. The service was very attentive and attentive. So you don't have to wait long for the drinks.

We ate at Hülsmannshof again today and I have to say that I was very satisfied again. Both the salmon tartare and the pink lamb rump with olive and pepper mash (I think I tasted zucchini here too?) and baby spinach were great. The service was really very accommodating. Unfortunately, I forgot to take photos before eating, so I can only provide a photo of the half-eaten crème brûlée 😂.

But it's a shame that if you have problems with allergens, the choices are massively reduced because certain products are used in all dishes. ------------ We did something good for ourselves shortly before Christmas and treated ourselves to a 3-course meal for the two of us. And I have to say that we were absolutely satisfied. Both the potato grater cookies with the salmon tartare and salad and the beef soup with fädele would be very good. The roast goose was excellent. Tender and not dry! The red cabbage and chestnuts prepared for Christmas. To round it off with a delicious little Afagato. The service was very helpful. The atmosphere is pleasantly rustic. We would love to come back 👍

Went to the buffet at noon on Christmas Day. So far so good. Buffet was quite ok. For the price of 65.00 euros. I expected more. Unfortunately, the dessert buffet still hadn't been set up at 1:50 p.m.! I found the Christmas menu much better and more comfortable in recent years.

The atmosphere and service were top, the restaurant is in a really nice location. We were there for brunch, I was disappointed. At a price of 28.00 euros per person, what was offered was very meager. Only two types of cheese were served, baked rolls (a no go in this price range, no croissants or shortcrusts), a type of salami and shreds of Serrano and cooked ham, no boiled eggs, just scrambled eggs, no bacon, a very dry tuna pie in puff pastry , like cold schnitzel. Meatballs also cold and boring. Fish platter was good and consisted of trout and salmon, as well as smoked mackerel. The main course was also not particularly special, market vegetables, potato gratin, thin brown sauce. Overcooked fish (salmon and zander). Then what was much worse for me, pork, beef and poultry meat all in a pile, on a wooden board covered with aluminum foil under a heat lamp. That's not possible (Muslims) and it's unpleasant to look at. Depending on your wishes, a piece was picked out and cut into pieces by a service lady. Unfortunately my roast beef was no longer pink but rather cooked. Annoying . Dessert buffet also sparsely stocked, a fruit salad (maybe also pay attention to the seasonal availability of the types of fruit) a mouse au chocolate with red fruit jelly (canned product) and a roll of panna cotta. This is nicer. Maybe serve in glasses and offer an ice cream bar or small cakes. I don't understand the mostly positive posts. Many people are probably dazzled by the atmosphere or don't have much experience with gastronomy. There is clearly room for improvement when it comes to brunch, especially in the price league. All in all, not recommended for brunch, unfortunately. In summer it's ok to have a beer on the terrace. Addition as of November 17, 2024. Unfortunately not much has changed. The owner has changed, still more appearance than reality. Went there for lunch. Food mediocre, but quite satisfying. Reads better on paper than it looks. The drinks were booked flat, the later the event was, the less often the waitress showed up. It's a shame, because our throats were dry.

We (3 people) decided on a Sunday to go out to eat at the “Hülsmannhof”. We had fond memories of the restaurant. Friendly welcome, reserved table was ok, attractive interior, friendly service without big “time gaps”, even though the restaurant was busy, menu with a large selection. Prices are “still reasonable”. We chose: bottle of water, 2x Lugana, 1x ginger ale, appetizer platter Hülsmannhof, 1x veal schnitzel with fries, 2x fish variation (salmon, John Dory, shrimp) coffee. So: until then, very good. Conclusion: it would have been a successful evening if everything hadn't been ruined by impossible behavior at the end. Open until 10 p.m. However, at 8:30 p.m., several people began to rearrange the restaurant with loud noises. Reason after speech: “We have a big funeral on Wednesday and want to finish work on time” (Monday and Tuesday are closed) So we were catapulted out 1.5 hours before closing time. That's not possible and led us to the realization: For 165 € with 3 people there are various restaurants in Werden and the surrounding area with very good food and a very good "feel-good atmosphere"

Good choice of dishes and very good cakes. The restaurant is located in an idyllic setting on the edge of a small wooded valley which invites walks just before or after stopping at the restaurant.

Restaurant HülsmannsHof I just want to address one topic today. First of all: The dishes here have been really good for years and the standard has been kept to my taste. Service was also good on my last visit. Ambience very nice.. But what I would like to complain about at this point is this CANDY TABLE!!! You could also call it the complaining area or parental stress zone!! (Quite comparable to the well-known children's lock zones at the checkouts in the supermarket; also an absurdity for stressed parents) Hello -- does this have to be in a restaurant? In my opinion - No!! I'm guessing whoever set up this table doesn't have any children of their own!? It can't be about sales!? Or maybe for the child's well-being (feeling) -- or maybe to fuel Karius and Backtus?? Yes, yes - I know, with well-behaved children that shouldn't be a problem!? If you know any, congratulations!! Well, I wish all parents the nerve they need ;-) I wish all guests who might want to enjoy their food in peace the equanimity and understanding for the "sweet" little ones who fall into this trap! With this in mind, I wish all guests a blessed appetite in the always beautiful HülsmannsHof! Nothing is eaten as hot as it is cooked ;-)

Still one of our favorite restaurants. We celebrated our wedding here 10 years ago and always enjoy going here, our children and mothers also love it. Very nice atmosphere, friendly service and a very nice terrace in summer.

Visit Hülsmannshof September 19, 2024, two children, four adults. Food ordered: 2 rump steaks from grass-fed beef with fried potatoes and garden salad - both salads were missing, one was brought as dessert upon request, the other was completely missing. The fried potatoes didn't have enough salt, but were very fatty. The "size" of the portions was shockingly manageable, we had to eat extremely slowly so as not to appear to be lurchers. The meat was tasty and to the point. Beef fillet/pork fillet was ordered twice, once as on the menu and once salad instead of vegetables. This special request was forgotten, the vegetables in both dishes were too salty and there was no salt in the gratin. The pork fillet was excellent, the grain of the beef was reminiscent of sauerbraten or pulled pork, hopefully the maturity wasn't too advanced... A breaded pork schnitzel with fries was specifically ordered for a child without any side dishes; here, as on the menu, it came with fried egg and bacon. For the second, larger child, who has had a gluten intolerance for years and bravely eats according to the rules, the order was beef fillet with fries - here the meat was covered with sauce that was simply not allowed for the child. The waiter suggested that Simply putting the meat on another plate, which of course isn't possible. The waiter responded to our slowly increasing impatience quite trustingly with "relax, everything will be fine"!! Just as inappropriate is the confidential question: any more dessert for “you”? On the other hand, the innkeeper's reaction to a personal description of the case was positive - he immediately offered a reasonable discount. Despite everything, we didn't let the birthday invitation be spoiled, but another visit there is certainly rather questionable...

We celebrated our wedding at the Hülsmannshof - and it was perfect. We had a separate room plus a terrace. The buffet was delicious and varied, there was something for everyone. The drinks were well mixed and strong. And the service... We had a lady who just looked after us the whole afternoon/evening. I think there are hardly any people who can match her in terms of attention and friendliness, that was really world class. We and all our guests went home full, drunk and happy. Thanks to the entire Hülsmannshof team - you played a crucial role in making this celebration a success. If I could, I would give 6 stars too.

We received so much positive feedback from our colleagues. The organization on site was excellent with almost 300 people. We would love to come back for the next company party!

A country house restaurant. The half-timbering divides the large room into smaller areas, which emphasizes the cozy ambience. Very attentive and nice service. We had the beef broth which was excellent. The wild mushrooms in cream sauce and the boiled beef as well. Really good, down-to-earth and honest cuisine that doesn't pretend to be anything else. We'd love to come back.

Restaurant in a rustic half-timbered house with a great beer garden. The food is German with Mediterranean influences. Large menu with a wide selection. Not exactly cheap, but worth the price and the items were quite large throughout, so we didn't manage to finish dessert after the starter and main course. The service is super nice, but sometimes a bit overwhelmed when the beer garden is full (which isn't great, but then it's understandable... we're happy to wait). Overall, a top recommendation.

Sad what has become of this great classic restaurant. Since the kitchen management changed a few years ago, the menu and the food have been a joke. The portions are quite meager and the prices are outrageous. It's a shame, because the ambience of the restaurant is one of the most beautiful in Essen.

Terrible… We had lunch at Hülsmanshof today and unfortunately noticed that another waitress was yelling at a young girl. The girl then started to cry, but no one paid any attention to her and they just continued to pick on her. Never again !!!

We recently celebrated our wedding here and were thrilled with the overall package. From the first contact, through the preliminary discussions, to the day of the wedding, the entire team supported us professionally and sympathetically. In our opinion, the service, quality and selection of food and drinks couldn't have been better. On the day of the wedding, the Hülsmannshof team was always at our side and was always one step ahead, so we didn't have to worry about anything. The day was as relaxed for us as we had hoped. The ambience of the location with the adjacent terrace and garden also provides that certain something. We felt completely in good hands. Many thanks to the entire team!

I was a guest at a wedding today. However, I noticed how a younger waitress was being shouted at by another waitress over a small thing. She seemed very affected by the situation as she even cried. I felt very uncomfortable, especially because the screaming was unjustified.

Hello, I was at the Hülsmannhof today and unfortunately I noticed a young employee being yelled at by another older employee. This experience there was very unpleasant for me personally. The young waitress was totally upset and continued to be shouted at by the other older waitress. For me personally it's a no go, I won't be coming back...

We had dinner at Hülsmannshof on Friday. We sat outside in nice weather. The service staff were very friendly and attentive. The strawberry punch as an aperitif was a poem and both the main courses and the dessert (dessert plate) were incredibly tasty 😋. Of course there are cheaper restaurants, but we found the price-performance ratio absolutely reasonable. It was an extremely successful evening and we would be happy to come back.

We ate there for the first time today. However, I have to differentiate my assessment. The ambience was clearly very well maintained, inviting and appealing. We felt comfortable in this regard and ate outside. With Dogan we had a very nice and courteous waiter who scored points with humor and attentiveness, but was never intrusive. We also liked the service. The food was honestly mediocre. I had the schnitzel with South Tyrolean bacon and fried egg. The schnitzel was freshly prepared and not a convenience product. That's basically good. However, it wasn't seasoned at all and actually tasted more like frying fat. I actually couldn't eat the fried potatoes, but of course I tried them but they only tasted like oil and fat. No taste of its own and unfortunately not crispy either. I told the waiter that when asked. I haven't been able to find out whether anything will happen as a result. Unfortunately, the presentation of the food wasn't successful either, no garnish on the plate, no decoration, not even a few herbs sprinkled on top. Unfortunately it was very carelessly prepared, which we both found to be a shame. Conclusion: nice atmosphere, but we wouldn't come back again just because of the food.

Because of the bad weather, we sat with friends and family not in the garden but on the first floor. It was cozy and the service and food were great

First time at Hülsmannshof. A lovely place with great outside seating. We enjoyed the various vegetarian options. Our kids had a good choice from the kids menu and very much enjoyed the playground
