Gasthaus Alte Fähre in Essen

We celebrated our mother's birthday there. A warm welcome, attentive service, delicious food (the goat cheese salad is divine), great wines, and overall, the selection of food and drinks is top-notch! We felt completely at home and would gladly return.

We were there for the first time last night. The atmosphere was fantastic, the service was super friendly, and the food was truly delicious. I've rarely had such a delicious schnitzel with fresh chanterelles. The price/performance ratio is absolutely perfect! We'd definitely be happy to come back.

We happened upon the "Alte Fähre" on our bike tour and were able to snag a table right away. The ambiance is truly lovely, and the staff were exceptionally friendly and attentive—you immediately feel welcome. Unfortunately, the food couldn't live up to this positive impression. The paprika schnitzel was disappointing—mayonnaise, or rather "salad mayonnaise," with the fries from a bag was a no-go. Any apprentice could do better with the paprika sauce. The schnitzel was absolutely dry. It's a real shame. Something that's a basic requirement for any kitchen should be better done in a restaurant. It's a shame, because the service and atmosphere are excellent, so there's definitely room for improvement.

I come here every now and then. The atmosphere is very nice. It's right on the Ruhr River with a beer garden, but it's already in the shade early on. I chose the paprika schnitzel, but I was thinking it was more of a gypsy schnitzel, but the sauce turned out to be paprika. The service is very friendly, attentive, and courteous. So, overall, a solid 4.

I went there with my girlfriend to use the restroom before a canoe trip on the Ruhr, which wasn't a problem at all (that's not the case everywhere), and then we ate in the beer garden after the trip. The service was so friendly, the food was simply delicious, and the menu was unusual and interesting; I couldn't decide. Overall, a very nice place with good food right on the beautiful Ruhr!

Wellness program in Kettwig This was our first time at the Gasthaus Alte Fähre (3 people). We felt at home from the very first moment. The lovely decorations on the tables and the friendly welcome contributed to this. The food impressed the three of us. The food arrived quickly and was of exceptionally good quality. We want to come back.

A very nice restaurant right on the Ruhr River. A great garden area. Beautifully decorated. The owner is very attentive and tries to fulfill all guests' wishes, and she is also very welcoming. All the other staff are also very well trained and attentive. Top-notch service, which is rare these days. The food was excellent; very tasty. I highly recommend it.

A very nice garden restaurant, somewhat hidden away right on the Ruhr River. A small menu with traditional dishes at fair prices. Very friendly service. Four of us were there, and everyone was delighted.

The hostess is humorously friendly, accommodating to requests, and the food is delicious. We arrived as part of a larger group and were immediately assigned a table with a sunshade in the spacious outdoor area, with a beautiful view of the Ruhr River and the Essen-Kettwig district. If you ignore the noisy air traffic, everything was perfect. I highly recommend this inn!

I stopped in yesterday and would like to tell you that I have very rarely experienced such kind, attentive, and friendly service. Good inns do still exist.

Ate a very delicious tarte flambée, and not for the first time. The atmosphere was lovely and the service was attentive and friendly.

Very nice restaurant. I always go there with my children and they always have fun there because there is a beautiful view and delicious food and the staff is incredibly nice and my children love the daughter (the younger one of course).

A beautifully located restaurant on the waterfront with excellent food and friendly staff. A definite recommendation! As a family, we love the fact that you can take a walk in the green surroundings along the Ruhr River before or after dinner, or rent a pedal boat on the other side. A great family outing.

As soon as we arrived we immediately felt at home - the team is incredibly friendly, attentive and warm. The service was consistently top. The food was an absolute highlight: super tasty, freshly prepared and of really good quality. A great place – quiet, relaxed and with a wonderful view of the Ruhr.

Beautiful location. There is a garden overlooking the river with a swan and a church that occasionally rings its bells. It's very romantic and has delicious cod and beef tenderloin. If I have a chance to come here, I will come back

A little stopover on the RuhrtalRadweg! We were warmly welcomed! I was even able to charge my cell phone behind the counter. The food was really outstanding. I had one of the best goulash soups ever. The beer garden is a dream! So full marks Best regards

We already knew the “Alte Fähre” inn from last year and since we were back in Essen-Kettwig we visited this nice restaurant again. The ambience, the good cuisine and the very friendly staff are definitely worth a visit.

We have been guests on the “ferry” for several years now and have never been disappointed. It starts with the greeting from the senior and/or junior manager. Very warm and never superficial. You know each other a little... The menu has always been great over the years. Everything is freshly prepared and of very, very good quality. Price/performance ratio is absolutely fine. The guests are actively looked after in the Old Ferry. The entire team in service and in the kitchen is always concerned about their guests. Absolutely top class! The Alte Fähre works in a highly professional manner without forgetting the warmth of the guests. This is how top gastronomy works! We remain loyal to the house. Kind regards from the Wellmanns

Beautiful place, maybe a bit pricey but definitely worth it! The schnitzel with the champignons sauce was delicious, as well as the beer.

Das war mal eine Gans ! Top Fleisch, knusprige Haut , große Stücke … und dann die Geschmacksexplosion bei Rotkohl und Sauce - einfach zum genießen! Da wir 1 Woche vorher ein Sternerestaurant in Velbert zum gleichen Zweck besucht haben kann ich sagen : Der Alten Fähre gebührt ein ⭐️ Das war um Klassen besser ! Wir kommen wieder … und Service war wundervoll ohne aufdringlich zu sein .

Heute noch die schöne Oktobersonne draußen genossen. Und passend dazu Weißwürste, Breze, Bier zum Oktoberfest geschlemmt. Sehr nette Bedienung. Wir kommen immer wieder gerne.

Waited almost 1 hour for two schnitzels! When we asked after 45 minutes we were told, no, that's not true and we have to be patient. It wasn't that crowded, and we had something to drink on the table in no time. The schnitzel was very small, tasty, but way too expensive at 22 euros. Too bad.

We had a delicious meal in the beautiful beer garden with a view of the Ruhr. Service friendly and attentive. It was Bavarian week with a special menu.

Gasthaus Alte Fähre in Kettwig. Very nice atmosphere just below the weir. Nice beer garden. The menu is manageable and the prices reflect the ambience. The service is friendly and quick. Unfortunately, it's completely overcrowded on weekends and there are limited parking spaces. Point of contact for cyclists. Still recommended.

This inn has been around for years My favorite place. Always very good food, some home cooking, always a friendly word and a wonderful ambience right on the Ruhr..

Despite the prices, I still eat out often. A lot of things are ok or nice. But here the guest is really a king. Very tasty food, which is really ok considering the price, very nice service that really makes a guest feel like royalty. Ambiance couldn't be better. For us, the stay in the inn on our wedding anniversary was a surprising delight. The ambience, the personal contact and the wonderfully prepared food delighted the soul and body. We would be happy to come back and thank you for the food and drink and the friendly service.

Beautiful beer garden located directly on the Ruhr, nice staff, fast service. However, high prices, a piece of cheesecake and a cup of hot chocolate: €9.50! The cheesecake was average, the cocoa was only lukewarm and not particularly chocolaty. Therefore prices are not justified!

Here you are sitting directly on the Ruhr. The food looked good, the drinks were very good, the service was extremely attentive and friendly.

One of the very few restaurants or beer gardens directly on the Ruhr - it's great to sit there. The menu is sophisticated, but not extensive and therefore not something for everyone. Family service!

It's very nice to sit in and the service is also very nice. However, €8.90 for a glass of wine when the bottle costs €5.50 (!) in stores is quite audacious. Bottle of water, a tarte flambée and 2 glasses of wine = 45 EUR! All inflation of course….or brutal margin!

The kindest waitress I met. There are not so many tables outside (it is very crowded during sunny days). However, you can also stay inside which is still very nice, or share a table with someone else. My schnitzel was good, but I have to say that the mains ordered by someone else looked amazing!! It’s a very nice spot to go with friends and enjoy a lunch together :)

Die Lage ist schön, viele Biergärten mit Blick auf die Ruhr in Essen gibt es nicht. Was mich wirklich überrascht hat ist die Qualität der einfachen Speisen, die wir bestellten: die kalte Gurkenuppe war ein Gedicht, der Flammkuchen (in Biergärten oft TK) von erstaunlicher Qualität. Die Bedienung war freundlich, aber (noch?) ungeschult. Besteck gab es erst, als der Flammkuchen zur Hälfte gegessen war und auf Nachfrage. Dennoch: unbedingt einen zweiten Besuch wert.
