Right on the water, friendly service

We ate lunch at Filou today. Unfortunately, not everything was great: - There was a hair in one of the burgers, - One leaf in the side salad was completely brown, almost rotten, - The fried potatoes were partially burnt black and still had a large piece of onion skin in them, - Two of our espressos never arrived. The food itself was still very tasty, and the ambiance, with its view of the Baltic Sea, is truly lovely! Despite the forgotten espressos, the service was very pleasant and friendly. We are writing this review not just to vent our frustration, but also in the hope that this criticism will be taken to heart.

A lovely restaurant and café with a direct view of the Baltic Sea. There's plenty of seating inside, and outside you can enjoy coffee and marzipan cake (€4.50 🫣) in a cozy beach chair. My only complaint is the way to the restrooms, which are downstairs, so you have to climb stairs. This is just a heads-up for those with mobility issues. 😉 Otherwise, we received attentive and friendly service. 😎

The online table reservation was perfect. The food was good, but I expected more for the price. Side salad was extra. Drink prices… okay. Of course, those are prices with a view of the dam.

I visited this restaurant last year and had a very positive impression back then – the shrimp dish in particular was generously portioned and absolutely worth the price. Unfortunately, my impression has changed this year. The menu has been revised, but not for the better. While the shrimp dish in question still costs €27, this time it only consisted of exactly seven shrimp – quite disappointing compared to last year. The service also left a lot to be desired. The waitresses were unattentive, empty glasses went unattended for a long time, and no one asked for additional drinks. Overall, unfortunately, a step backwards. It wasn't bad, but the previous standards definitely haven't been maintained. It's a shame.

Very friendly staff and good cuisine.

My partner and I went here last night to enjoy our first evening at the beach. We couldn't have made a better choice. We spontaneously got a nice table without a reservation and were served by very friendly staff. Both the starter and main course were truly excellent. We only skipped dessert, as the portions in the main course had already significantly exceeded our expectations. We would gladly come back.

We were there for lunch today. Plaice Finkenwerder style and risotto with chanterelle mushrooms, each with a side salad. The fish dish was completely flavorless and needed more seasoning. The risotto was watery and also lacked flavor—even seasoning with salt and pepper couldn't improve its taste. Clearly, neither broth nor butter nor Parmesan cheese were used to round it off or achieve a creamy texture. The sprinkled Parmesan couldn't have saved this dish either. Very disappointing, and we paid €60 for it. The waitress apologized and offered us a coffee on the restaurant's bill, which we declined. It was once again confirmed to us that restaurants in the best beach locations don't necessarily deliver the best quality, but instead charge steep prices.

Ate there twice: once pasta with salmon, once pizza Parma. Very friendly and attentive service. The food was fresh, hot, and made with fresh ingredients, very tasty, and served quickly. Everything was clean and well-maintained. Good value for money. I'd be happy to go back.

The food was poorly presented, the beans were only briefly steamed/boiled, no seasoning, and the pepper cream sauce was just cooking cream with peppercorns, lacking in flavor. The pizza was good. The plaice was well-cooked. The fish plate was poorly prepared... The table decorations were dried out...

Yesterday, we ordered suckling pig from a Filou stand. I never write bad reviews, but this was so bad and expensive. We've never had such a bad meal. The suckling pig was cold, partly raw, the coleslaw was tasteless, and it cost €21.50.

Tonight, we decided at short notice to go out for dinner. Filou caught our eye, thanks to its proximity to the beach. The food is delicious, and the service is extremely friendly. We'd love to come back.

I don't usually like writing negative reviews, but unfortunately, this one is unavoidable, especially because of the service. The meal was disappointing overall: The "Pasta with Truffle Mushrooms and Mushrooms" consisted of nothing but mushrooms in a cream sauce, with no trace of truffle. The salmon pasta had barely any sauce, and when I asked for more, the service responded with eye rolls and unfriendly glances. The cake was dry, as if it had been sitting for several days, and the prices for the quality offered are only worthy of a Baltic Sea view. The absolute negative point, however, was the payment process: Our change was simply kept. Without even asking, we were simply dismissed! It's a shame, but the way guests are treated here is truly unacceptable.

The food was surprisingly good. And even from inside, we could look out over the Baltic Sea and watch the windsurfers.

Hello, I'm afraid I have to say that you shouldn't order a schnitzel there unless you like breaded frozen schnitzel. I don't understand that in a restaurant. It's advertised as a crispy schnitzel. It came with a very small portion of fried potatoes. They were good, though. Unfortunately, there weren't enough. And if you want some salad with it, it costs extra. The staff was very friendly.

Everything is just right here: the food tastes excellent, the portions are large enough to satisfy even the most cravings, the (mostly very young) staff are very friendly, and the atmosphere is pleasant (which is also helped by the positive, cheerful atmosphere among the employees). The only downside is the rather high prices, but since, as mentioned, everything is just right, it's reasonable.

A visit is definitely worth it - but please make a reservation in advance 😉

A very nice restaurant with a fantastic outdoor area, including beach chairs, right on the dike. We ate there twice, and the food was always delicious; everything was very fresh. We were especially impressed by the homemade desserts. What's truly worthy of a five-star hotel is the top-notch service.

In the Valley of the Blind, the one-eyed man is king. There's simply no alternative there, so it's just average food at an overpriced price. If you just want a drink, you can't go wrong.

We were recommended Filou for Thursdays by friends who had been there two weeks previously. From the table reservation via email to the inquiry about whether we could bring our dogs, we were very satisfied. A little tip: Don't arrive too late for the suckling pig, as the selection is limited. Then we arrived for dinner and were treated to nothing but pleasant and friendly staff. The food was perfect. Thank you, and we wish the whole team continued success, a full house, and, of course, pleasant guests.

We've been vacationing in Schönberg for years. We thought we'd try the restaurant again, as we weren't impressed years ago. The price/performance ratio isn't right at all. The service was really nice, but really just the service. You can definitely get better food in Schönberger Strand.

Today we enjoyed our Thursday roast suckling pig again... with homemade, still warm bread (onion today, mmm), homemade coleslaw and tzatziki, a crispy crust, a joke from the grill master, and a friendly smile from the boss - a perfect end to the day!

I've been here twice now, about a year apart. The food was okay both times. However, the service was completely overwhelmed and chaotic both times. Sometimes you have to wait an extremely long time before someone comes into view. A guest next to us wanted to order dessert. After he got the menu, no one came to take his order for 15 minutes. He then left after paying inside at the counter. We also waited over 15 minutes after our meal and then paid inside. We also waited a long time before our meal to order. Strangely, the antipasti platter arrived without an extra plate. There was no salt on the table. Finally, the atmosphere in the covered outdoor area is very uncomfortable. It's so quiet that you can hear every word spoken by the surrounding tables. As a result, everyone whispers so that not everyone can hear you. This makes it even quieter. It's somehow very unpleasant; the music is sorely lacking. I won't be coming a third time...

Yes, I highly recommend the "Filou" restaurant at Schönberger Strand. We, a group of 12 seniors, took our coffee break there. There were super crispy waffles with whipped cream, hot cherries, and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. We also had as much coffee as we wanted, and the landlady, Stephanie Franke, even left us several carafes of water. After this incredibly delicious refreshment, we set off again to visit the communities with the straw figures. It was a wonderful afternoon for us, and I would like to thank Ms. Franke again for allowing us to stop by her wonderful restaurant!

Great restaurant with a lovely charm, right behind the dike with a sea view... The staff, some of whom are still very young, are very friendly and accommodating, but occasionally a bit clumsy. Explicit requests regarding the food were easily accommodated. The roast suckling pig is especially recommended. However, you should arrive early for this, otherwise everything will be gone.

We ate there for the first time in 2024 and were so impressed that we immediately made a reservation for another visit. With these expectations, we returned in July 2025 and were unfortunately immensely disappointed. The schnitzel was paper-thin and thickly breaded. The fried potatoes were partially burnt, and the fried egg we ordered, although it was a good effort, couldn't salvage the overall miserable impression. The other dish:

Below-average food for tourists who only come once... We're not tourists and were very disappointed. The menu includes pizza, pasta, and a few North German dishes (just for tourists!). Pizza and pasta were OK, but nothing special. The sauerfleisch (sauerfleisch) and herring (matjes) were good quality. The remoulade with the sauerfleisch was more like a green sauce—absolutely unsuitable and unseasoned. The housewife's sauce with the herring (matjes) was also a disaster—no seasoning, just creamy, not in the least bit North German. The fried potatoes were greasy and soft—horrible! When I asked, I was confirmed that the chef was Italian. Fine, but then there shouldn't be any German dishes on the menu. By the way, the schnitzel was criticized at the next table—you'd better not buy that at Filou, too. The view is great.

We got a pizza and pasta to go on the first day of our vacation. Both dishes were really fresh and delicious! That's why we decided to eat in on the last evening of our vacation. The seating is comfortable, and the staff is friendly. Unfortunately, the starter was disappointing. The value for money wasn't right here... it lacked any seasoning, and the bread served with it was definitely from the day before and extremely dry. The main courses, however, were again impressive. The fish was fresh and well-cooked.

I'm a little disappointed. We've been coming here for so long and so often. Yesterday we were there and the food wasn't what we're used to. It looks like they've cut corners wherever they can. There's no salad before anymore. Not even with the roast beef. Not with any portion. And then I was really looking forward to the green beans. No luck. They're not available anymore either. The food was very bland. I think it's a shame that they're removing everything... but the price hasn't gotten any cheaper. I'd like to make a statement about that. Best wishes, and I hope things improve. Otherwise, that's it for us. We always come with at least 6 people.

The ambiance and the numerous seating options overlooking the beach are wonderful. The menu has something for everyone, and the quality of the food is very good. We were also struck by the truly positive atmosphere among the staff and the attentive service we received. We'd be happy to come back.

Sehr gutes Essen, tolles Ambiente, direkt hinterm Deich. Das Personal war äußerst aufmerksam und wirklich, wirklich nett. Als Nachtisch gab es einen altdeutschen Apfelkuchen mit Grieß - zum Niederknien… Wirklich einen Besuch wert…!

A warm cocoa, a gentle view of the sunset moving close to the pier towards the sea. The fresh breeze over the Baltic Sea and the gentle swaying of the grass...that's vacation! A loving waitress with a smiling look asks: do you have a wish? I now order something unique to go with my cocoa... because the smell that fills the restaurant from the anteroom makes me hungry... A whole suckling pig...does its rounds on the grill. For only €21.50? I asked puzzled? Smiling, she replied yes...! ....is it too much, she replied questioningly..! I no! Of course not! ....WHERE else can you get such a freshly grilled suckling pig....? I find it extremely cheap. I thought by the way...maybe the portion is small! .....but then I was allowed to go and I had to stop the man at the grill... I thought oh my god who would eat all that! I was extremely positively surprised..... the sun is now singing into the sea... pleasant music is humming softly in the background while I taste the first bites. Oh mhhh madness... crispy, juicy and deliciously seasoned. A recommendation that I would like to give to every reader on Thursdays. Because suckling pig is only served here on Thursdays. But there are other fantastic dishes on the menu that make your mouth water just by reading them. This restaurant really caters for every taste. The staff is attentive but not intrusive... is friendly and accommodating. In the meantime the piglet has been eaten...but my eyes don't stop looking at the typical Nordic thing. The sound of the waves has a calming effect and the atmosphere here doesn't make me think about getting up just yet. I order another cold beer just to stay here for a few more minutes. If you ever visit Kiel and the surrounding area, this restaurant is a real insider tip. Parking spaces are just 10m to the right of the main entrance. It is 50m to the sea. And after dinner you can take breathtaking walks along the dunes with plenty of time to take breaks. It's not the last time I'll be here! I'll try the menu up and down...you can try it too! We went to Filou for brunch over Easter and absolutely loved it! We received a very warm welcome as soon as we arrived - the entire team was consistently friendly and attentive. The buffet was lavish and varied, there was something for every taste - fresh, tasty and lovingly prepared. We particularly liked the cozy atmosphere and the fantastic view of the beach and the pier. An all-round successful start to Easter Monday! We will definitely be back – a real insider tip on Schönberger Strand!

We had breakfast at Filou on Schönberger Strand – absolutely recommended! The view directly over the sea is fantastic and immediately creates a holiday feeling. The prices are really fair, especially in such a great location. I would particularly like to highlight the super friendly and attentive service - we felt completely at home. Gladly again!

That was surprising. The very friendly, personable waitress brought us to a table - then came 10 minutes later, took the order for (in our opinion) aperitif and main course. After 3(!) minutes the food was there. After 7 the aperitif. The mustard we ordered with our meal didn't come at all and our evening at Filou only lasted a total of 45 minutes. Schnitzel and cordon bleu were ok. The vegetables that were on the menu were crispy beans - also ok. The fried potatoes were large potato quarters, not completely cooked through and the taste was simply disappointing to barely edible. What a shame! Even or especially in the low season and with a smaller menu and few guests, I would have expected a little more quality, time and therefore business sense.

Selten so schlecht gegessen, der Aperetiv hat nur am Campari gerochen, sehr viel Eis und Orangensaft. Die Ochsenbäckchen waren verkocht und der Kartoffelstampf und der Brokkoli völlig geschmacklos, die Soße aus der Tüte, die Kräuter bei den Riesen Garnelen verbrannt, der Salat kam erst später. Der Wein zum Essen kam erst bei Nachfrage ob dieser vergessen wurde und der Höhepunkt als noch nach dem Glas Rosé gefragt wurde kam dieser mit der Bemerkung: und hier ist noch dein Wein. Das geht gar nicht. Ich bin weder per Du mit dem Personal, noch bin ich mit meinen 60 Jahren so jung um mich von einem Kellner duzen zu lassen.

If I had been there, I would have sent the food back. 26.90 for braised ox cheeks with frozen broccoli. The sauce was sour and watery, the meat was sour, the broccoli was sour, the mash or whatever it was supposed to be was sour. You couldn't eat. Unfortunately we ordered to be picked up. We are on vacation for a week on the Baltic Sea and have eaten there several times so far. The young service staff are very friendly and the food is exceptionally good, i.e. whether it's a starter, main course or dessert, everything here is recommended. We would love to come back!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A nice restaurant, the suckling pig is highly recommended. There was coleslaw with the suckling pig which was excellent. When I wanted to buy a portion a few days later, I was told it wasn't possible. It's a shame, that wouldn't be a problem in other restaurants. Not exactly customer friendly for me!

Good cuisine, unfortunately strong smells in the men's toilet that cannot be attributed to the usual business. Unfortunately, it's a bit of a bad aftertaste when visiting a nice restaurant.

In the evening we ate as a couple and with a dog in a pleasant atmosphere. Despite the restaurant being busy, the service was very friendly and accommodating and we had our food and drinks in a reasonable amount of time - which were very tasty! Therefore 5 points, recommendation and again at any time!

Two of us spontaneously went there for dinner today. The service was super friendly, the atmosphere was inviting. The food arrived quickly and freshly prepared and we enjoyed it very much. For dessert we chose cake/tart from the extensive selection, which was also very tasty. The questions about the type of filling for the poppy seed crumble cake were answered very nicely by the boss at the table.
