The food consisted of 100% ready-made products. When we asked why nothing was freshly prepared, the excuse was, "With so many guests, you can't cook fresh." That was a lame excuse. Unfortunately, our usual restaurant was full due to a large group, so we decided to try there. Conclusion: eat there once and never again. The seat we were given was also extremely uncomfortable. It was right next to a staircase. They couldn't give us another seat. The space was very tight for eating.

It's been a long time since we've been to Augustinerkeller, and we probably won't be back. The service was really unfriendly, and the food was okay, but not outstanding. It's a shame, as we used to go there often.

There were two of us, looking forward to a nice rump steak. It was 6 p.m. on a Saturday evening and there was hardly anything going on, a fact that made us a little suspicious. A lady at reception led us to a table in the middle of the restaurant. We sat down, ordered, and then came a little surprise. The steak my neighbor at the table was even a bit smaller. Two stars just for the overall taste. Medium-rare wasn't really possible for a steak of this size. I think €30 for that is a bit steep. It's a shame.

€18 for the schnitzel you see...I don't think I need to say more! Waited almost an hour for the food. Better not go there! It's almost a rip-off for the quality (nonexistent) that ends up on your plate. The waitress was alone and overwhelmed.

It could be better. The food was tasty, but it was more like a standard chip shop (Wiener Schnitzel). The service was OK. The fact that the upper floor is only accessible by stairs and everything has to be carried up is just how it is. So everything arrived in pieces or individually.

Four of us spontaneously visited this lovely restaurant once, and four weeks later, with nine people (pre-booked). I absolutely cannot understand why there are such bad reviews for the Augustinerkeller! Both times, the food was fantastic, delicious, plentiful, the staff friendly, always making sure the glasses were full, and the food was served very quickly. I'm very picky and always find something negative! But I and all eight other people were, without exception, thrilled with the food, service, and value for money! The knuckles were so crispy and delicious, and we think the taste was unique! My daughter and I have often eaten knuckles somewhere that tasted extremely porky, or were overcooked and mostly unseasoned. The goulash and schnitzel were also very tender, especially the pork schnitzel! All the sauces are incredibly delicious (we always try everything so we know what to order next time) and, by far, taste very good compared to other restaurants that mostly serve ready-made sauces! My grandchildren were very enthusiastic about the Champion sauce. They are both very spoiled when it comes to food, as they always cook fresh at home without using packets or ready-made ingredients! We will definitely be back, as the value for money is also good, and as already mentioned, the staff, at least the ones who served us, are very friendly and prompt! With a group of nine people, the drinks were distributed to the right person after ordering, as was the food! The waitress knew exactly who ordered which dish! And that was despite the restaurant being very busy!

Unfortunately, we were really unlucky with the food. My knuckle of pork wasn't cooked well and the meat was hard to pull off the bone, and the Jägerschnitzel was much too small for the price. At least the side salad could have been a bit bigger. All in all, unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend it; we only tried it because of the atmosphere.

A great restaurant to sit outside and people-watch while you eat. More traditional German food, which is what I was looking for. The only thing they didn't have was the jogurt dressing for the salad. I had the French onion soup and the Jager schnitzel with mushroom cream sauce and fries. My friend had the saurebrotten. I really enjoyed meal.

We wanted to have a nice evening together and had been craving a delicious schnitzel all day. We searched on Google and found the Augustinerkeller. We each ordered a Jägerschnitzel with fries and spaetzle, along with a side salad. Unfortunately, the schnitzels tasted very tough and had some brown spots on the inside. The crust was very soggy. The Jägersauce also tasted very sour, and the mushrooms were very wobbly. The spaetzle aren't homemade, which you'd expect given the prices. The side salad only tasted of vinegar and water. After we complained to the waiter, he disappeared into the kitchen with our food and didn't show any further interest in us or bother us. After a long wait, we approached him and asked how we should proceed. After a long discussion, he canceled one of the schnitzels but said he wouldn't cancel the second one. The reason given was that no one had complained that day. Never again! Unfortunately, we both got food poisoning. €30 for flushing the toilet. Thanks for nothing!

I've been there several times with friends over the last few days and everyone enjoyed it and felt comfortable. Although some other guests were bothered by the fact that there wasn't a German boss. But there is still GERMAN CUISINE THAT TASTES LIKE GRANDMA'S!!!!

Meh. Food was passable but nothing like restaurNts in munich or berlin. I got the pork knuckle and it was dry and oddly tasteless. The "fried potatoes" were just deep fried chunks (rather than pan fried- much better). The saurekrat tasted like it was heated up right from a jar (rather than sauteed in wine, and juices, etc). Cool ambience tho. And prices are decent.

One of the best German restaurants

We highly recommend this restaurant. The staff was very friendly, and our food, both soup and main course, were delicious. We felt very comfortable and will definitely visit the Augustinerkeller again.

Gave us a ghetto table at the bottom of the stairs. Food came out way too quickly (microwave?) Sauce on my schnitzel was awful. Just a horrible experience. Much better options in Mainz. Avoid this one.

I can't recommend this restaurant. The Kaiserschmarrn (smothered pancakes) was obviously frozen. The staff's diligence is practically nonexistent. For example, they were "placed" for us, but didn't feel it was necessary to actually greet guests. During our time there, several guests turned back because they had been waiting forever. The staff celebrated the rather early closing time loudly, completely forgetting about the guests. The ladies' restrooms weren't very appetizing.

The asparagus was overcooked and served with reheated potatoes and an unappealing instant hollandaise sauce. The service was inattentive, and the restaurant is in need of renovation.

We were there with four people and two dogs. Before we all went into the Augustinerkeller, one of us asked if there was a free seat and if the dogs were allowed in. A waiter answered yes to both questions and showed us to a table. As we walked toward our table, a second waitress intervened. In an impertinent tone and at an inappropriate volume, she complained about us entering the restaurant. She became increasingly impertinent, so we left immediately. We have absolutely no problem with being unwelcome because of our dogs. But this woman's demeanor and the way she treated us were completely unacceptable! It's best to avoid this restaurant. Friendliness and service are trampled upon here.

I ordered a tarte flambée and it was delicious 👌🏿 Top-notch service, friendly and welcoming staff, and a great atmosphere.

The sauces were a bit thin in taste.

The atmosphere is quaintly Meissen-style. It's a must-see when visiting the old town. A glass of wine is always a good idea. The food is typical of the region. We had Handkäs mit Musik (music cheese) and Spundekäs (spiced cheese). Both were presented rather carelessly and tasted very reminiscent of convenience foods sold at discount stores. The quality used to be much better.

An ambience that is already showing its age. I didn't think the price-performance ratio was that good. More could be done with the ambience.

Went there to eat with a smaller group. Service friendly and ok. Being a host has a bit of a tourist handling feel to it. Food could really be better. The sauces are fantastic but without them I would probably have returned the schnitzel. Tasteless and characterless. You can't go wrong with fries as a side dish. To my mind, fried potatoes were more like fried quarter potatoes with bacon from the package and only fried potatoes for half the ingredients. I know fried potatoes to be different and delicious. I generally had more hope for an obviously traditional restaurant. If this continues, the tradition will soon end. I hope the criticism can make a difference.

Mal feels completely unwelcome as soon as you walk in. When I was there with my parents, the boss's daughter and granddaughter were there. Everyone was very loud, the child was sick. Ambiance and feel-good factor... and all of this at the neighboring table. The food was lukewarm, only the fries were good. Never again.

Small restaurant bar, with ability to open further areas when busier. Even on Sunday lunchtime there was a steady stream of customers. I had the pork knuckle which generously sized with sauerkraut and fries. Lots of options for drinks. Family friendly. And I am back again, this time Apr 2025. Lovely to see the bar/restaurant very busy on a Saturday night. All 3 floors open and queues out of the door. Menu is good value and service exceptional. The Augustinerkeller will be at the top of my list in Mainz.

Really very very tasty. Argentinian steak was great. With delicious beer in a cozy setting. Nice service. A little rough at first but then really natural.

We had reservations for a Sunday evening at 5:30 p.m. Our table was in the gallery (?). We quickly noticed that the lamp was hanging in an awkward position for one of the guests. In addition, the two seats for two were very impractically arranged. It seems as if the available space had to be used economically instead of giving up one of the two-person spaces. When we arrived there were still dirty dishes from the guest in front of us. In addition, there were two cards with clearly legible names on the site to identify our reservation and the following one. In the upper back area it was also difficult for the service staff to make themselves noticeable. However, our waitress was very nice and tried hard. We ordered the sauerbraten with red cabbage and potato dumplings and the pork schnitzel with pepper cream sauce and fries and salad. The salad came quite quickly, was a simple side salad and "nothing special" but fresh and tasty. The warm main courses also came after a reasonable waiting time. The schnitzel was a perfect size and fried just as well. The fries were crispy and delicious. The pepper cream sauce was delicious and almost a little too little. The sauerbraten, red cabbage and dumplings were top quality and well seasoned. For dessert we ordered the Kaiserschmarrn and the sweet tarte flambée. The Kaiserschmarrn came with applesauce, which I didn't need. Tastes very good. The sweet tarte flambée was also delicious, although surprisingly large (pizza size). Some kind of dip would have been nice here, for example some creme fraiche.

Cozy, friendly atmosphere, delicious food.

Augustinerkeller is always my go to spot on Sunday’s in Mainz when most places are closed. Their app is very user friendly and allows easy and quick table reservations. Big plus there bs having to call or sending and email. Food is right on target with typical favorites including some extras from time to time. Sauerbraten, Goulash and schnitzels are especially good.

Wiener Schnitzel tasted very good. Unfortunately, far too little for me personally. Based on the price, there could also be 2 such schnitzels on the plate. The salad was also very, very clear. I haven't ordered any Kaiserschmarren yet. For €6.50 it was really ridiculously little. Too bad. Everything was great in terms of taste and ambience, but I wouldn't come back.

The service was okay, there's nothing to complain about. But the food? Absolutely not worth the price – neither in quality nor in portion size. Had a Kaiserschmarrn, which tasted okay, but was a disgrace for the price. The portion was far too small, so the price-performance ratio just wasn't right. I wouldn't visit again.

Unfortunately it is very old, rustic yes, but no longer up to date. Food was okay, more but also not - modern is different and the portions don't fill hungry men. We've been here for years, but we didn't feel comfortable. Prices are not appropriate for the portions.

Ich war mit meinem Mann zum Abend essen. Er hatte ein normales Schnitzel ich ein Jäger Schnitzel. Leider war die Soße eine einzige Pampe mit 4 kleinen Pilzen versehen. Die Pommes waren für meinen Geschmack versalzen. Auch die Bedienung könnte etwas freundlicher sein. Wir werden dort nicht mehr essen gehen

Nice olfashioned German restaurant, beer from the barrel

War das erste Mal im Augustinerkeller, da ich Lust auf gutbürgerliche Küche hatte. Zur Auswahl standen Schnitzel, Steaks oder auch Klassiker wie Roulade oder Sauerbraten. Ich hatte mich für die Leberklösse entschieden. Als Kamen war ich positiv überrascht. Sie waren sehr fluffig und lecker. Dazu gab es Sauerkraut und klassisch Püree. Der einzige Punkt über den man sich hätte streiten können, das Sauerkraut war etwas salzarm, dafür stand aber alles auf dem Tisch was mir deutlich lieber ist. Ich war mit allen sehr zufrieden, ob Bedienung die beide sehr nett waren oder auch dem Essen oder das Ambiente. Also dieses war nicht mein letzter Besuch.

Just had dinner there with a friend. We both had the pork schnitzel with fries. The food was very good, the fries were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, the schnitzel was fried to a perfect golden brown. The service was friendly and quick and the rustic ambience gave me a personal feeling of being at home. All in all just beautiful and perfect.

Wir wurden von Bedienung asiatische an den Tisch gesetzt und bekamen die Karten , nach 20 Minuten konnten wir immernoch nicht bestellen da Bedienung hinter Tresen telefonierte und uns übersah.. Die Frau am Nebentisch bat dann den Bediener von onben ,doch bitte unsere Bestellung aufzunehmen,da Bedienung Telefon wichtiger ist als Gäste. Der Bedienung männlich zwar schneller als die andere .Als ich mich bei der Frau bedankte sagte sie mir,das die das öfters macht. Meines Erachtens nicht normal in diesem Job ungeeignet. Waren schon öfters bei ältere Bedienung da ,die ist auf Zack und schneller als Asiatin.

Chicken schnitzel with white peppercorn sauce did not disappoint , their potatoes are also delicious. Place was busy , poor server was all alone . He did a great job though!

It has a sense of history. The tables are old but very clean. The food is very good. The Haxe we had was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.

It was completely okay. The food was okay. However, some kind of sophistication was missing. If you just want to fill your stomach properly, you can spend a nice evening there.

We came to this place together and chose the same dishes - mashed potatoes, beef rolls and red cabbage. The interior of the establishment was very dark and old, but the cleanliness could have been improved. We were guests of the city of Mainz and chose this place without relying on reviews, which, unfortunately, we read after the visit. The food, alas, did not live up to expectations, and after our visit, numerous critical reviews about this restaurant disappeared, and only positive ones remained. I wonder how it happened that all opinions about the place became exclusively laudatory😳

Portions too small for the price

We were there yesterday. Unfortunately, the food wasn't good. The side salad was very carelessly prepared. Hardly any dressing. Some of the food was cold and my son, 6, asked for croquettes because the portions were very small. We paid another 5.20 euros for that, even though we had already said that the food was cold. Pork, still raw. The service was really nice, unfortunately that was all.

Great food and well located, would recommend. Augustinerkeller has a good range of steaks, salads, schnitzels and sausages. Quite expensive but we thought the food was great quality and very tasty.

Habe ein Schnitzel bestellt mit Pfeffersauce , als das Essen kam und ich anfing zu schneiden stellte ich fest war nur halb gebraten .,die Bedienung sagte ist doch nicht schlimm .,und ging auf Beschwerde nicht ein . Sind aufgestanden und gegangen . Waren schon oft da , bei der anderen Bedienung gab es nie Problem.

Local is under Chinese hands. My wife and I waited 15 minutes to get a seat. There were seats available but the service took a break. Food was mediocre. It's a shame for such a historic restaurant.

We reserved a table very easily. We were greeted very friendly and shown to our table. The restaurant was very busy and there were long queues at the entrance because there was hardly any space left. After drinking, we went straight to eating. My wife had a special request for dumplings, which was possible and implemented that way. The food was really excellent. I had a grill plate with fries and various medallions. There was also a gravy and a side salad (in advance). My wife had a really delicious roulade with red cabbage, dumplings and dark sauce. Because everything tasted so good; We decided on a Kaiserschmarrn. Everything tasted excellent and we will definitely be back. Everything was within reasonable price. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. I can fully recommend the Augustinerkeller and am already looking forward to my next visit.

We were there last Saturday at 7 p.m. The Augustinerkeller was completely full. We were lucky that we still got a place. We were served quickly, the food came in a reasonable time - about 35 minutes, with matching drinks (we had Augustiner on tap and an Aperol) time quickly passed. For food there was roulade and goose leg. A dream!! Thank you for that!

Six of us had dinner. Service was ok, unfortunately not always up to par, which surprised me again as there wasn't much going on. Food and drinks were forgotten even though they were noted! Ambiance is rustic to very old and shabby. Food was also ok, from the kitchen's perspective it could have been presented a little better on the plate, a lot has been lost over time. Summary: We are known to love eating and drinking, but unfortunately we are often forgotten even though we have made our presence known.

The portions of the food were far too small and none of our friends were full. Unfortunately it was a big disappointment... a shame. It wasn't particularly well prepared either, there were three mini mushrooms in the sauce, and the steak wasn't seared medium rare as stated. Spices were missing throughout the meal. The waitresses were nice and helpful

I had the Sauerbraten and my eyes lit up like a kid on Christmas morning. The taste matched the view, spectacular! My brother and SIL had Jagerschnitzel and said it was great. Bier was cold and tasted wonderful. Would absolutely recommend!!

A nice traditional Mainz restaurant with a rustic atmosphere and very friendly service. My onion spit roast was tasty but unfortunately a bit tough and the fries were too salty.

Prices go up, quality goes down, what a shame! We've been eating Gäsekeule food for years, but it's never been as tasty as it is today. What a shame for 28 euros!

Four of us dined here last night ( Sunday, Dec 15). As far as FOOD goes I would say RUN! Very traditional dining experience EXCEPT the food was quite pricey for what your served. had the Angus pepper steak (medium) it was very small in size and weight but with a premium price, taste was not anything to leave a positive memory. So sad but I feel this establishment is simply taking advantage of the tourism in this area. My son had the mixed meat plate and found it to be very underwhelming in taste and quality (lack of). Daughter in law stated her Onion Soup was tastey. All in all we will not return.

The ambience and the food were very good and are recommended. However, I found the lady who mainly did the service to be rather unprofessional. There was an older man who just wanted to drink a beer and wanted to sit in a special place to do it. The man was told (in an unfriendly way in my opinion) that you can only sit there if you have reserved for two people (there was still a lot available at the time and the man actually just drank his drink and left). Later the lady had a loud argument with another service worker, which I found to be unprofessional that this happened in front of customers. Otherwise it was a successful evening.

Preis Leistung unterirdisch schlecht.Essen vorbestellt und trotzdem 2 Stunden gewartet,bestellt wurde Hirschgulasch mit Klöße und Rotkraut.Alles ungewürzt,Klöße ferigbeutel Rotkraut ohne Geschmack und das Gulasch hat nach Dosenfutter Geschmäckt. Getränke Bananenweizen mit Wasser gestreckt,Süßgespritzer Apfelwein mit Limo und Wasser gesteckt, Angus Steak ohne Gewürze.Mitarbeiter total überlastet,wenn man nach Toilettenpapier fragt weil es leer ist kommt nur ein schulterzucken und patzige antworten.Im großen und ganzen nicht empfehlenswert.

Was there for dinner with 15 people, food was pre-ordered. Still a 2 hour wait. Other a la carte guests were served earlier. Käsespätzle didn't taste like cheese at all. Service was overwhelmed. Only one toilet per gender.

Cool brewery restaurant with down-to-earth good food at very reasonable prices. Despite the large number of visitors, we were allocated a relatively quiet table, where our dog also had enough space and was quickly supplied with fresh water. Advance reservation request is recommended.

Very tasty and the service is also good. But what use is that to me if I have to leave a restaurant hungry? Sooo small portions and above all I don't understand why people save on the side dishes like fried potatoes and fries or side salad. It doesn't cost much more, but it makes for satisfied guests.

Ate (didn't eat) the worst "Zurich-style Geschnezeltes" of my life. It wasn't Geschnetzeltes but somehow like goulash lumps. The meat tasted "old" rotten meat, inedible. Sauce and noodles ok. I'll just eat there again.

Erst wird man an den Tisch gesetzt und bestellt dann essen und trinken. Dann kommt Essen und man fängt an zu Essen und 1 Minute später kommt Bedienung und sagt sorry sie müssen aufstehen der ist reserviert habe ich ganz vergessen .obwohl sie vorher ins Reservierung Buch geschaut hat. Sowas passiert bei der älteren Bedienung nie. Wie ich später erfahren habe wa das die Chefin ohne Plan . Also diese Person ist im Service fehl am Platz.
