Restaurant "Alter Simpl" im Herzen Mannheims in Mannheim

I've eaten at this restaurant several times and usually order veal schnitzel. I've noticed that I get smaller portions of meat each time I visit, and this time the schnitzel was also very fatty. For the price, I find the portions really disappointing—just two very small pieces of veal schnitzel. The salad was fresh and delicious, but there were problems with the fries: Instead of the fries I ordered, I first got fried potatoes, then finally the fries—but only a few pieces, probably leftovers. The quality and portion sizes used to be much better. I think that's a real shame.

Not only was the food good in the restaurant on a Friday afternoon, but the service was particularly striking. Very warm and attentive, something you unfortunately rarely experience these days. The restaurant itself also impressed with its cozy ambiance. We would eat there again anytime during our stay in Mannheim.

You can't complain at all. At alde simpl you get what you want and what your heart desires. Beautiful location right in the center of Mannheim. Simply flawless and idyllic.

Unfortunately, I didn't sleep there, but the food was simply top-notch, you really can't complain. I had the cheese spaetzle for dinner, which was simply delicious, and the salad that came with it was also crunchy and fresh. The service was also wonderful. (And the nice lady serving us wasn't bad either.) All in all, the best business lunch in a long time.

Misch and the boys had a really good time again in the simple, casual way. Not disappointed again this week. All in all, not sloppy. The cheese spaetzle was almost as good and hot as the setting.

The old Simpl is perfect! I ordered a portion of spaetzle with cream sauce and a schnitzel. The spaetzle were homemade and freshly prepared, the cream sauce delicious, and the schnitzel was perfectly cooked. The food came quickly and the servers were friendly. Definitely the best German restaurant around!

Sometimes, when eating at a restaurant, you wish for a little journey of the senses. Here, however, it felt more like a short trip to a culinary desert – with a few oasis experiments. The salad with turkey breast strips initially arrived as a surprise package: cucumbers in their natural armor (skin included) and a dressing that was supposed to be called "vinegar and oil," but disguised itself as a cheerful mustard mission. At least: After a friendly complaint, a second salad was actually served – this time without mustard, with vinegar and oil, as ordered. The turkey, on the other hand, remained consistently dry and tasted more reminiscent of "a summer vacation in the spice section of a Greek supermarket" than a local restaurant. The beef salad was another chapter in this taste novel: the best ingredients in theory, clumsy preparation in practice. The result tasted as if the kitchen had briefly considered how to do it right – and then decided against it. Good products were processed here in a brave experiment against their culinary will. Positive: Complaints are taken seriously. Negative: Unfortunately, you have to have them.

This is without hesitation one of the best restaurants I have ever had the chance to eat in!! A warm welcome, a pleasant atmosphere, the staff was very attentive. And the chef's cuisine was truly exceptional! An address to absolutely discover! 🤩

Well, the beer wasn't particularly cold. The service was friendly, though. Three stars for that. Two for the beer.

The food was okay, but the service was disappointing. The sauce only arrived after a long wait – in the end, we had to get it ourselves, without any apology. The waitress was inattentive, brought the wrong drink, and loudly threw cutlery into the drawer (making it impossible to have a proper conversation). Finally, even my still-part glass and water bottle were simply cleared away. What a shame, there could have been more in there.

In one sentence: it's simply idyllic. The location in the middle of Monnem is extremely romantic. The beef rib eye was incredibly good. Can't complain. And the crunchy dumplings were absolutely amazing. Not only amazing, but also the whole toolbox! 🤞🏻🫡 Perfect

We had a wonderful meat salad with fried potatoes, and the pork cheeks were served with spaetzle and sauerkraut (our request). Each one and all together were delicious. We were also very pleased with the wine. Last but not least, my sweetheart received - also at his request - half a portion of the pancake soup. This one too 👍. We left Mannheim with these wonderful memories. Thanks to the very friendly, fast, and flexible good "spirits" here.

We've been there twice in quick succession. The staff is friendly, the food is delicious, and the seating is very comfortable. The sauerbraten and the classic dishes were excellent! We'd be happy to go back.

I'm in Mannheim for a few days for work, and I was looking for a restaurant serving German cuisine near my hotel for lunch (it was around 3 p.m.). Therefore, my following review concerns only the restaurant. Unfortunately, there are no star ratings for food and drinks, so I'm only giving it 2 stars.

Good food and good service as well worth to try out

A great German restaurant with authentic cuisine! The food was fresh and hearty, and the service was warm and attentive. A rustic, cozy atmosphere – exactly what you'd expect from a good restaurant. A definite recommendation for lovers of traditional German cuisine.

Was soll man schreiben, Rindfleischsalat mit Bratkartoffen… unglaublich so etwas geschmackloses einem Gast zu servieren! Hacksteak mit Käse und Pommes….. auf jeder schäbigen Raststätte in den 80zigern ja, in Mannheim 1a Lage unverschämt.

Only those who want to eat and drink are allowed to sit at the tables, even if half the place is empty. Well, that doesn't have to be the case.

Half the store was empty inside, 8:30 p.m. on a Monday. After being told that there were seats available, we sat down at a free table. After ordering only drinks, an employee rather rudely pointed out to us that tables were only given to people who also wanted to eat. If there was a need for our table, we would just have to leave. No one around us was eating. More than 10 tables were free. We won't be back for drinks, but we won't be back for food either.

Offenbar hält man es für angemessen, in einem halb leeren Restaurant, den Gast darauf hinzuweisen, man wolle Tische für Essende frei halten. Trinken reiche nicht aus. Nun denn. Zum Essen komme ich nicht wieder. Aber zum Trinken auch nicht.

Vriendelijke ontvangst en snelle bezorging van de maaltijd. De bijlage salat is een flink bord en smakelijk. Schnitzel goed met friet en alles goed warm. Lekker biertje erbij en dus niets te klagen.

A very good restaurant with a well-coordinated team. The speed, the cooperation, and the sense of humor—when everything's just right, the atmosphere in the restaurant is also excellent. The food was delicious, everything perfect for four people. It was really busy, and the staff worked like ants to please the guests. Alter Simpl Schnitzel recommended!! There was cheese and pepperoni in it, but I didn't feel anything. French fries were also very delicious. The spaetzle was delicious too!

I cry every time we say goodbye because everything is so good. Really good. And the staff including the owner. Guys, you have to experience this. As with our last visit a few months ago, they didn't manage to bring the starters BEFORE the main course. Last time everything came together, this time one was even forgotten and came after the main course (to be fair, not calculated), the other came again with the main course. In addition, the steak was raw inside on the first attempt, but on the second attempt it was delicious. My son thinks the cheese spaetzle deserves a stronger cheese. But in itself a nice menu with delicious dishes in a nice atmosphere. You should work on the details. Service as always very nice and attentive.

German home cooking at its best! Our schnitzel and cordon bleu were served quickly and tasted perfectly. Also very attentive and friendly service. Of course it's not the prices you're used to in the local village economy, but it's reasonable considering the high quality.

I was recently back at the Alter Simpl restaurant and was once again delighted with a menu and a meal that was second to none. This is exactly how good home cooking should look and taste. A culinary dream that you would like to experience again and again.

I don't understand why the place is often full. The cuisine is committed to being authentic and regional, but even the simplest dishes lack finesse. Even a Viennese schnitzel is small, dry, the fat in the frying should have been changed long ago and the potato salad was far too sour and the potatoes were half raw.

A restaurant located in the middle of the square city of Mannheim. The menu offers purely German cuisine. On warm and sunny days you have the opportunity to sit outside. The service makes an attentive and courteous impression.

I was there two years ago - the food and service were fantastic. Today, when I was there, I have to say: the food was clearly not fresh and the meat was very tough. Really a shame. ☹️ The restaurant clearly lives on the reputation of the past.

I was here with my wife for dinner. Great atmosphere, a bit rustic but we love that. The staff was very friendly and the most important thing: a perfect Wienerschnitzel, sautéed until golden brown in the pan, very tasty homemade potato salad, Jamie... a wine list with really exquisite wines.

We've been there for dinner twice in the last few weeks. Both times the food and service were great. The service is attentive and friendly. There is down-to-earth German cuisine, Schnitzel Cordon Bleu etc. The prices are reasonable, it is clean and you feel comfortable.

We were here spontaneously for the first time with 5 people, we were lucky that a table became available after a short time (reserving is recommended). The staff was consistently friendly and funny, you immediately feel like you're in good hands here. The menu is not overloaded and the prices are fair for the portions. The food was absolutely delicious, everyone really enjoyed it. Even though it was well attended, it was still possible to have a good time. The food was ok but nothing exceptionally good. The service is completely overwhelmed as soon as more than 5 people sit at a table. At every round of drinks drinks were forgotten or the wrong ones were brought. Price performance food is not right at all.

We made reservations - which is highly recommended, as the restaurant is very busy - especially by regular guests. Good home cooking at very fair prices. What makes the visit special are the warm, competent and quick waiters who don't seem stressed despite everything going on. There is time for a friendly word and you feel welcome as a guest

Perfect, everything is fine. Good dishes, also for vegetarians. The only thing is that on some days the service in the Redtaurant prevents us from taking a seat.

The alter simple is a good German bourgeois restaurant where you can get all the classics. I liked it, the location and the service were also nice. I couldn't complain.

We ordered food to be picked up. The vegetables were completely missing, but were accounted for! The fries were cold. The meat (loin) was completely dry. And all for €24.90.

It was our first time in the Altes Simpl. We immediately felt at home - beautiful, rustic, attractively designed restaurant. There was something going on, but not loud or hectic. From the daily menu I had kidneys with spaetzle and a lamb's lettuce. Everything was really good, the lamb's lettuce with the fried ham cubes and pieces of bread was very tasty! The spaetzle was a bit small and without the salad I ordered, I wouldn't have been full. The innkeeper is funny and friendly and also very business-minded. The restaurant is designed for high throughput and sales, the large Pilsner arrives after a minute (but that's how it tastes) and the food arrives after 10 minutes. You can see it this way and that, but all in all it was good and comfortable. We will be happy to come back. 1 star deduction for the too few spaetzle and the (actually very good Eichbaum) pilsner, which was tapped like a Kölsch and tasted like it.

Man sitzt hier sehr gemütlich wie ich finde. Das Personal ist aufmerksam und etwas vergesslich zugleich, aber freundlich. Unser Essen war: 1x dezent kalt Soße z. Gänsekeule und Rotkraut), wurde dann sofort wieder erwärmt. Das panierte Schnitzel mit Pommes war ok, solange es warm war; aber auch nichts besonderes. Man entschuldigte sich für das kalte Essen und es gab ein Angebot eines Getränks als Wiedergutmachung.

The waitresses were very friendly and accommodating. Even though we didn't have a reservation, we were given a table with the understanding that we would have to leave after 1.5 hours - absolutely fair and no problem for us. The quick cuisine was particularly impressive: after we ordered, it felt like it only took 5 minutes for the food to be at the table. An all-round successful experience – we would love to come back!
