Restaurant "Alter Simpl" im Herzen Mannheims in Mannheim

Leider war das Essen eindeutig zum zweiten Mal aufgewärmt. So etwas haben wir noch nie erlebt. Waren schon öfters hier aber heute zum letzten Mal.

We had a pleasant stay here. Very pleasant atmosphere, attentive service, the food was very tasty and, above all, arrived at the table quite quickly. We will definitely be back.

We've been there for dinner twice in the last few weeks. Both times the food and service were great. The service is attentive and friendly. There is down-to-earth German cuisine, Schnitzel Cordon Bleu etc. The prices are reasonable, it is clean and you feel comfortable.

We were here spontaneously for the first time with 5 people, we were lucky that a table became available after a short time (reserving is recommended). The staff was consistently friendly and funny, you immediately feel like you're in good hands here. The menu is not overloaded and the prices are fair for the portions. The food was absolutely delicious, everyone really enjoyed it. Even though it was well attended, it was still possible to have a good time. The food was ok but nothing exceptionally good. The service is completely overwhelmed as soon as more than 5 people sit at a table. At every round of drinks drinks were forgotten or the wrong ones were brought. Price performance food is not right at all.

I had the “Alter Simpl” plate. Delicious fried potatoes, with onion and pork loin. Very tasty and pleasant atmosphere. A recommendation 👍

We made reservations - which is highly recommended, as the restaurant is very busy - especially by regular guests. Good home cooking at very fair prices. What makes the visit special are the warm, competent and quick waiters who don't seem stressed despite everything going on. There is time for a friendly word and you feel welcome as a guest

Perfect, everything is fine. Good dishes, also for vegetarians. The only thing is that on some days the service in the Redtaurant prevents us from taking a seat.

The alter simple is a good German bourgeois restaurant where you can get all the classics. I liked it, the location and the service were also nice. I couldn't complain.

We ordered food to be picked up. The vegetables were completely missing, but were accounted for! The fries were cold. The meat (loin) was completely dry. And all for €24.90.

Wir waren an einem Samstagabend spontan zu fünft da und haben einen Platz bekommen. Das Essen war sehr lecker (lokal/regional), der Kellner extrem gut aufgelegt. Hat für gute Stimmung gesorgt. Top Faßbierauswahl von Eichbaum.

It was our first time in the Altes Simpl. We immediately felt at home - beautiful, rustic, attractively designed restaurant. There was something going on, but not loud or hectic. From the daily menu I had kidneys with spaetzle and a lamb's lettuce. Everything was really good, the lamb's lettuce with the fried ham cubes and pieces of bread was very tasty! The spaetzle was a bit small and without the salad I ordered, I wouldn't have been full. The innkeeper is funny and friendly and also very business-minded. The restaurant is designed for high throughput and sales, the large Pilsner arrives after a minute (but that's how it tastes) and the food arrives after 10 minutes. You can see it this way and that, but all in all it was good and comfortable. We will be happy to come back. 1 star deduction for the too few spaetzle and the (actually very good Eichbaum) pilsner, which was tapped like a Kölsch and tasted like it.

We were visiting Mannheim and are in old age. Everything was fine. The service was friendly and attentive and the food was exactly as we imagined it. Gladly again

Man sitzt hier sehr gemütlich wie ich finde. Das Personal ist aufmerksam und etwas vergesslich zugleich, aber freundlich. Unser Essen war: 1x dezent kalt Soße z. Gänsekeule und Rotkraut), wurde dann sofort wieder erwärmt. Das panierte Schnitzel mit Pommes war ok, solange es warm war; aber auch nichts besonderes. Man entschuldigte sich für das kalte Essen und es gab ein Angebot eines Getränks als Wiedergutmachung.

The food in the Alter Simpel restaurant was simply fantastic! I had the pork cheeks with sauerkraut, fried potatoes and gravy - the meat was incredibly tender and perfectly cooked. The waitresses were very friendly and accommodating. Even though we didn't have a reservation, we were given a table with the understanding that we would have to leave after 1.5 hours - absolutely fair and no problem for us. The quick cuisine was particularly impressive: after we ordered, it felt like it only took 5 minutes for the food to be at the table. An all-round successful experience – we would love to come back!

Long-established Mannheim restaurant with very good, upscale traditional cuisine. Service is super fast and attentive. The ambience is still from the brewery era. Clocky.

Traditional German restaurant in the heart of Mannheim, top notch!

It used to be one of my favorite restaurants. Went for lunch today. Sauerbraten, with potato dumplings and red cabbage. Sauerbraten nice and crumbly, taste-wise, well. Red cabbage tasteless. Potato dumplings, just potato dumplings. That's it for me with Old Simpel. I hate it when a restaurant slacks off like that.

This is not a hotel, but a German restaurant. The taste is usually delicious. Waitresses are friendly and kind. You can automatically choose between 5% and 10% tips. This was the first restaurant of its kind in Germany. American.

A lovely traditional German restaurant with friendly and helpful staff. We were not able to book a table, but in checking with the restaurant in the afternoon, they said for us to come back at the time we chose and they would do their best to accommodate us, which they did. The weather was warm enough for us to have a table outside and they have heating under their awnings which made it a very pleasant experience. The quality of the food is very good, as was the accompanying service and we would definitely go again

I have been to Mannheim several times for work and come here every time. So far I have never been disappointed. I always got a seat even when it was busy. The food is really good and I can only recommend it. The price-performance ratio is right here. Service is also on point and very nice. Also accommodates special requests. I'd love to come back

We were here for dinner today. The restaurant is in the middle of Mannheim's city center, but is somewhat quieter. We had the cheese spaetzle, the best I've ever eaten, with a delicious side salad, and I also had a potato salad, which was also pretty tasty, but tasted a little too much like vegetable broth, so I only gave it 4 stars. My companions had the sausage stomach, also very tasty, and the lamb skewer, which was spot on. Price-performance is okay. The spaetzle was the winner in terms of price-performance ratio. Our waitress was really nice and attentive!

We went there for the first time for my mother's birthday. Super cozy location, high quality food at a reasonable price and very loving staff. What more could you want? We'll definitely be back. Clear recommendation.

Delicious food and fast service. We were dining in the evening while the restaurant was full. We expected to wait a longer for our food but it only took a short time. The dishes were all tasty and rather large portions. I had the pig knuckle which was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The sides could have been a bit nicer presented. But the overall experience was great.

My schnitzel was quite fatty, ok it was fried but there was still a lot of fat on it. I would take the grill plate next time. Otherwise beer was good, service was friendly, value for money was okay.

Overpriced food and not even yummy. They charge you 26 euros for a schnitzel and additional 40 cents if you want to have mayonaisse.

We went there one evening for dinner, brought by German colleagues who wanted us to try real local food. And I have to say it was a really nice experience. The restaurant has outside tables and this is very nice in August. The staff does not speak much English but they have menus in English so this is not a problem. The food is excellent and also in considerable quantities, so you will definitely leave full. We also tried a German white wine and it was a positive surprise for everyone. A really nice memory of the evening.

Ich war eigentlich auf der Suche nach einer Lokation in Mannheims Innenstadt, in dem ich mit ca. 15 Personen Anfang September meinen Geburtstag feiern möchte. Der Außenbereich des alten Simpel's bietet genügend Platz für eine solche Gruppe, erscheint gepflegt und gemütlich. Das Wetter war super und da nicht alle Tische im Außenbereich reserviert waren und es noch freie Plätze gab, entschied ich mich ganz spontan zu einem Testessen, weil ich auch die Karte einsehen wollte und setzte mich an einen freien Tisch. Der Kellner kam sofort zu mir und fragte mich on ich alleine wäre. Ich bejahte die Frage und obwohl auf dem Tisch an dem ich saß, kein "reserviert" Schild aufgestellt war, wurde ich höflich, aber unmissverständlich darauf aufmerksam gemacht, daß ich als Einzelperson gerne drinnen Platz nehmen könnte, da man dem Außenbereich des Restaurant ab 19 Uhr "die Bude einrennen" würde. Ich war total perplex und entgegnete dem Kellner, daß auch Singles oder Einzelpersonen bei schönem Wetter im Sommer gerne draußen sitzen möchten, nahm verärgert meine Tasche und ging. Ich gehe wirklich oft alleine essen, aber so etwas ist mir noch NIE passiert. Über die ̀Geschmack und Qualität der Speisen kann ich keine Auskunft geben, aber Hauptsache die Rezensionen der vollbelegten 4er Tische und die Kasse stimmen. Warum also sollte man sich an EINEM enttäuschten Gast stören ?

It's a shame, because the menu is very promising: it says HOMEMADE FRIES, DUMPLINGS AND FRIED POTATOES... Unfortunately, they're all ready-made products and unfortunately they don't taste that good either.

The food is great and the waiters are nice. The Cordon Bleu with fries is very large and really tasty. The super juicy and crispy crust is also highly recommended.

Been to the restaurant, food was delicious

We didn't stay at the Hotel Planken, we just had lunch at the "Alter Simpl". Delicious Palatinate cheese, as well as other dishes and a large selection of wines are served in a cozy restaurant by friendly service. We were also satisfied on our second visit, three months later. However, it bothered me that you have to pay a small surcharge if you change the supplements. Many other restaurants are more accommodating on this point.

Dear people who don't come from Mannheim, like me, the restaurant is a disaster. I ordered a Wiener Schnitzel and schnitzel with spaetzle. The meat from both dishes were very, very dry. The service is not good at all. This is our second time here because a friend of ours really wanted to come here. I don't know why, maybe it's because we're foreigners? The Alter Simpel has been around as long as I can remember, my father was a guest there. I do owners have changed over the decades, but the restaurant hasn't, and that is a good thing. The food is solid German fare and consistently good. Don't expect fancy nouvelle cuisine here, but if you are looking for down-to-earth German food, you have come to the right place.

It's always a nice location for us. Nice service and tasty food. The wine spritzer is a real Palatinate spritzer. My salad with turkey breast was good, but the lettuce leaves weren't quite as crunchy anymore. The beef salad was sensational, but unfortunately the fried potatoes were not. They are pre-made from the bulk pack and then quickly put in the deep fryer. A pity.

A nice, large room with a pantry kitchenette. The hotel is located in the middle of the city center, so there is no breakfast service. Several cafes and bakeries around the hotel. The room was very clean and the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Super good German cuisine in the middle of Monnem

I had a spontaneous meal there today with my husband. We were both thrilled, you get something for your money here. My husband had the knuckle, which was extremely crispy on the outside, and I had the pork schnitzel with a cream sauce. The service was very attentive but not intrusive at all, so you could have a relaxed conversation. Keep it up, unfortunately there aren't people like you in Mannheim anymore.

I wasn't impressed with the food. Wienerschnitzel was dry, as if it had been prepared in the air fryer and one of the two schnitzels was stringy, the potato salad with it was okay. Service was very good, friendly atmosphere.

Parking - street with very limited time and space or the parkhaus two blocks from here. Parking was Euro 10.00. The parking spaces were adequate - we drove a stationwagon and this car was long, sticking out all the time on all parking places. Seating was offered inside and outside. make reservation. this place fills up fast.

My wife and I just wanted to drink good beer! But we weren't allowed to sit down because we didn't want to order anything to eat. something like that doesn't work at all!! Really very nice location in the middle of downtown Mannheim. The outside area is beautifully designed. It's very cozy inside. The service was super friendly. Unfortunately the price-performance ratio doesn't fit. Unfortunately my asparagus was woody. The ham was of poor quality and the pancake was fried too hard. My friends' cheese spaetzle were delicious, but they had to be seasoned a lot.

This is our very first dinner, since we arrived in Germany! My husband took me here, the food was excellent! The most tasty pork knuckle I've ever had. The price was rather reasonable. They provide excellent customer service!
