Restaurant Alte Schmiede in Lübeck

Unfortunately, we only discovered this restaurant on the last day of our vacation. A quaint atmosphere, friendly service, and, above all, incredibly delicious food (there were five of us, everyone had a different meal, all excellent), all at a fair price. The only minor drawback: the corner bench isn't exactly comfortable.

Very friendly service; we had the fish and Indian stir-fries, both of which were very good. We'd happily go back anytime.

The waitress was very nice and attentive. The food was delicious; I had schnitzel with fries and a fried egg, and my daughter had turkey strips with fries (I personally would have preferred rice or noodles as a side dish; perhaps they should offer an alternative, but that's a matter of taste; my daughter liked the fries). So, it still gets full marks. Very nice little pub/restaurant. Prices are reasonable. The day I was there, it was schnitzel day (schnitzel with fries, my fried eggs cost extra, but I thought that was okay, and I was offered several extras to go with my schnitzel, obviously at an extra cost, but the price was also reasonable, and you don't have to take them if you don't want them). 😁 So, they were still on offer. If I'm ever in Lübeck again, I'd love to come back. The menu is clear, not so huge that you don't know what to eat and find yourself wavering between 2-4 dishes. I really liked it and enjoyed it. Very nice ambience, fast service and very tasty food

I definitely recommend the restaurant. It's wheelchair-accessible thanks to the ramp, which can be used by guests who are constantly confined to a wheelchair, and the friendly, helpful staff. And wheelchair users are also warmly welcomed in the restaurant, which I've experienced quite differently at other restaurants. I always love coming here 😊!

Worst Experience – Not Recommended! Our visit to this restaurant was a disaster. The young man who took our order looked like he'd come straight from the kitchen, completely unsuitable for serving. He barely spoke German and used Google Translate to try to understand us – unfortunately, to no avail. Every question we asked went unanswered because he simply couldn't understand us. The service was abysmal, especially when paying. But the worst part was the food: The steak was bloody and raw inside, and instead of fresh garlic on the pizza, we just got garlic bread. Absolutely disappointing! The server also seemed unfriendly and like he had to give us the food for free. A completely unpleasant atmosphere. I absolutely do not recommend this restaurant! Thank you for your long, but unfortunately completely unrealistic, response. I ate at your place about two months ago – an experience I honestly wish I had never had. I ordered fresh garlic on my pizza. What came instead? Garlic bread. Served by a young man who didn't understand a single German word. And you seriously claim your team is fluent in German and English? 🤡 I rather get the impression that Google Translate is your primary means of communication – and even that wasn't even used well. If at least Google Translate had been used correctly, you might have understood what we wanted! Even worse: I ordered a rum steak that was completely raw and inedible in the middle. The fact that you now claim in your response that you "never serve raw meat" is simply ridiculous. Perhaps you should also give your kitchen team a Google Translate course so they at least understand the meaning of "medium" or "well done." The whole experience was a complete disaster: bad food, a pure language barrier, and zero professional communication. I find it remarkable how hard you try to evade responsibility with clichés instead of simply saying honestly, "Yes, we messed up." Conclusion: If you go to a restaurant for a hot meal and are instead served a language puzzle and raw meat, something is clearly wrong. Perhaps next time, not only Google Translate will help, but also a little genuine interest in guests and quality. With not-so-friendly regards, A guest who will definitely never return.

Nice staff, good food, cozy place

Cosy, amazing food and very good service. Had some vegetarian options on the menu and the vegetarian pan was the best food I have had in a while. We were a large group and everyone enjoyed their food, very generous portions. Thank you for making our day in Lübeck great :)

During a visit to Lübeck, we had lunch at the Alte Schmiede (Old Smithy). The quality was excellent. The staff was very attentive. We'd love to come back next time we're in Lübeck.

Old forge, now a restaurant/pub. Rustic atmosphere, friendly service and good tasty food. (Today's special was pan-fried dishes). Went again in Dec. 2022 and again had pan-fried dishes, which were really good and tasty. Summer 2025 had Wienerschnitzel of pork with side dishes, good and tasty. Apparently new owner, friendly and attentive service.

We were delighted with our visit to the old blacksmith shop. The restaurant has a very special, historic charm. There's even some outdoor seating. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The menu is clear and had a good selection of typical German dishes. They even have a lunch special, where dishes like schnitzel cost around €14. Our food was absolutely delicious, and the portions were generous. We'd love to go back! ☺️

I was there today with my son (3 years old). We received a very friendly welcome. The staff was courteous, and it was really nice for my son, as the man behind the counter treated him like a guest and not just like a child. Absolutely great value for money. If we're in Lübeck again, we'll definitely stop by again.

Sunday night one of few real restaurants downtime, typical German food and ambience. Wine list as well, but there is always good beer!

Unfortunately the quality of the meat is not good. This is meat from animals that were kept very poorly. Unfortunately you can taste it. And I don't want to know how many antibiotics and harmful substances I took in as a result. It's a real shame that quality isn't at least taken into account when it comes to the meat.

I can't remember the last time I ate as well and comfortably as I did today. I was served very well and will definitely come back as the menu has many interesting options. This time I decided on the schnitzel! I can recommend it to everyone!

It's a very nice place! With delicious food and excellent service

The restaurant is quaint and it's great that it's still preserved as it was when it was a blacksmith shop. Waiters are friendly and helpful. We chose the Viennese-style schnitzel with fried potatoes, as well as a frying pan with fried eggs and Cat's ham. The meat was very tender and the breading was exactly as it should be. Rarely have I had such a good schnitzel. The fried potatoes and salad were equally delicious. The Alster was also exactly to my taste, because there too, you need to have a sure instinct for the right mixture. The price is absolutely reasonable. We will definitely come back on our next visit to Lübeck!

The food wasn't the best, we gave a drink and then the lady asked us an additional two euros for the kitchen, which I find incorrect and unprofessional.

I was positively surprised because it didn't look that good. I liked it very, very much.

My initial skepticism was quickly refuted. The welcome and service were great. We both had the schnitzel with fried potatoes, which we can absolutely recommend. The meat was tender and the fried potatoes were crispy. The salad with the dressing was also very tasty. When the bill came we were extremely pleasantly surprised. Full plates at a reasonable price. We did absolutely nothing wrong here. We left the restaurant full and satisfied and are already looking forward to our next visit.

The four of us wanted to have something to eat together in the evening and happened to be in the Alte Schmiede. We were really impressed with the pizzas. The service was friendly and the price was right too. We'd love to come back.

A very nice restaurant, the service is great, attentive and friendly. The food...more than plentiful and delicious. We also highly recommend the “Fisherman's Spirit - Served Burning” to digest. When we're back in Lübeck, we'll come back.

Anyone who likes simple cuisine with frozen schnitzels made from molded meat and likes to be insulted by the landlord will get their money's worth here.

The food was really not good... it felt like a finished schnitzel was thrown bluntly into a deep fryer. Bah, any kebab with rotten meat would have been more enjoyable. It's a shame because the place actually looks nice and has potential. But even the cola was non-carbonated.

A rather average restaurant with a somewhat dated impression. So it was rather empty at a time when most people go out for dinner. We chose schnitzel and an Arabic pan. Both were hot but quite greasy. Overall, inexpensive.

The atmosphere in the Alte Schmiede is very pleasant, the furnishings exude the cozy charm that we expected. Service was tip-top, value for money was right.

Unfortunately it only gives 5 stars, but I would like to give more. We haven't been this satisfied in a long time. 4 people, lunch time, full hut and still, nice attentive, not a long wait and great, delicious food. Turkey slices, Wiener Schnitzel, Hawaiian pizza and my vegetable pan are simply great. A big thank you to the service and also to the kitchen. We would definitely like to come back. Clear recommendation from us, if you don't go it's your own fault.

Very lovely German restaurant. There were a couple options for vegetarians, of which were super yummy. Server was very fast and attentive, and overall the experience was very cozy and I enjoyed my time here.

We were here on pasta day...I actually wanted a pizza, but then I decided on the pasta pan (the lasagne was also very tasty!) and I didn't regret it at all. It was very tasty and the service was also good! Thank you and we'd be happy to come back when we're nearby!

My husband and I received very friendly and loving service here. The menu offers a wide variety of dishes for small and large appetites. I would particularly like to highlight the service, which does not involve long waiting times and is also very attentive and courteous. It was very tasty, we will definitely come back more often.

I would call our visit there "blessed accident". We had to eat something and I love German cuisine. We pop up just before closing time, but we were served and both dishes ("pans") were wonderful. Place seems to occupy old workshop of the wheel maker (there are pictures on the wall). A bit traditional, but we loved it
