Restaurant Alpenstuben in Schwangau

I ordered the German pig knuckle. We are very disappointed by the food quality. From the look itself, it is obviously being frozen for some days & simply re-heat to us. The skin is dry, tough, not crispy and we can't cut it with a knife. The meat is dry, not juicy, no taste at all. I can't imagine why this food quality is acceptable to be served in a hotel's restaurant. It costs EUR 25 which is not matching with the quality. It has spoiled my mood of that visit day to Neuschwanstein Castle.

We did not stay at the hotel, but enjoyed a lovely lunch on their terrace today. The ordered food is delicious and the staff are all very kind, happy & professional.

We were pleasantly surprised by the value for money. We had a lovely, clean room with a balcony overlooking Neuschwanstein Castle and a perfect location for visiting the castles, the lake, and the museum. The hotel restaurant offers delicious food at reasonable prices. The local cuisine, in particular, is highly recommended. Breakfast was extremely generous, and the cinnamon rolls were, without exaggeration, the best I've ever had. The staff also impressed us with their professionalism, friendliness, and helpfulness. They allowed us to continue using the hotel parking lot even after checkout and provided us with expert advice when we requested it. We were most impressed by how calm and friendly a gentleman remained when a guest began to insult the staff's language skills in an increasingly harsh tone, simply because the server couldn't identify a locally specific word for a dish. Once I understood the problem, I explained to the server (who spoke fluent German) what the guest meant. He then continued serving the guests as if nothing had happened.

You arrive and are shocked—there seem to be 1,000 tourists at the hotel. Arriving at lunchtime (2 p.m.) and having to walk through the restaurant with your suitcases is a bit strange...but you're still greeted warmly, the service is good, the breakfast is good, tasty, and plentiful. In the evenings, it quiets down once all the tourists have left, which was very pleasant.

We had lunch here, the food was terrible but we sort of expected this from such a touristy location. What was worse was the attitude of the waiter, who pretty much was guilt tripping us into leaving a tip as we were paying. This isn't America and we didn't really find the service exceptional anyway. Terrible experience.

Perfect location for seeing both castles in a day. Saw one in the morning, stopped by room to freshen up, went to the second that afternoon, and we never needed to move vehicle. Location, location, location.

The food was delicious, we got a table right away, and the food and drinks were served quickly. Prices are quite high, probably due to the direct location near Neuschwanstein Castle.

We stopped by for a meal before visiting Neuschwanstein Castle. Our tour guide, Pedro, recommended this restaurant, and it turned out he was right.

Nice restaurant. Cheerful service, as is customary here in a dirndl. The goulash soup was delicious, and so was the Kaisersmarrn. Many restaurants close at 5 or 6 pm. However, most dishes here are more expensive than in less touristy places. This one stays open a bit longer.

Superb family room: 2 separate bedrooms and 3 balconies with views of the castle

I can't say anything about the rooms, as I only used the restaurant. But otherwise, everything seems very nice and well-maintained. The hotel/restaurant is very close to the castle. The prices are also perfectly reasonable, considering it's a tourist area. I highly recommend it and would gladly return.

The hotel seems nice, but the restaurant is not up to par at all. The meat is not even on the same level as McDonald's. It's definitely better to have lunch or dinner at MULLER just above. The food is incomparable and the price is the same.

I recently visited Alpenstuben restaurant with my family on a tour, expecting the fast and kind service we had heard about. Unfortunately, our experience was upsetting and confusing: something we didn’t expect from a restaurant in a popular tourist destination. Service
An older Caucasian waiter with glasses on a string directed us to a table in full sun. When my daughter politely asked for a different empty table to avoid the heat, he seemed annoyed. He allowed it, but then dropped the menus onto the table in a way that felt dismissive and unwelcoming. Drinks
Within about three minutes of sitting down, the waiter came to take drink orders. When told we needed more time, he remained standing over us, repeating the question in English - as if we didn’t understand. I ordered a beer to give the others time, but when they decided not to order, his condescending reply- “No drinks? Just one beer?” - made it seem as if each person was required to order something. To make matters worse, the beer arrived warm and was unpleasant - the last thing that German beer was described as. Food I’m not a food critic, but the food was bland, cold, and nearly inedible. I can see the chief’s clear attempt to salvage this by adding olive oil, cheese, and salt: but it still tasted like cold play-dough. Tipping After the meal, the waiter repeatedly asked for a tip while withholding my change. I said “no tip” several times, but he continued until I gave in under time pressure. I later learned that tipping in Germany is customary but not compulsory : generally 5–10% for good service, and not at all if the service is poor. Being pressured for a tip felt disrespectful and unnecessary. I also noticed him treating other international guests with the same dismissive manner. Reading other google reviews on this waiter/ restaurant, claiming someone “can’t be racist” because they aren’t German is false - anyone can treat others unfairly and evoke feelings of racism, regardless of nationality. Staff Training - Encourage patience and cultural awareness, especially when serving international guests unfamiliar with local customs. 2. Clear Tipping Policy - Include a short note on the menu or bill that tipping is voluntary, with a guideline (e.g., “5–10% if satisfied”). This prevents confusion and avoids guests feeling pressured. 3. Drinks Ordering Process - Let guests read the drinks menu first and make it clear when you’ll return. A simple “I’ll be back in a few minutes for your drink order” would make customers feel respected rather than rushed. Given Alpenstuben’s multicultural environment, staff should approach international visitors with understanding, not impatience or defensiveness. I hope this feedback helps both the restaurant and future visitors.

I only ate at the restaurant. Perhaps it was busy, but after I decided what to order, the waiter passed by me several times, making eye contact with me, but he never came to me. After waiting for about five minutes, I said to a male staff member nearby, "Excuse me. Can I order?" and he imitated my tone three times, saying, "Can I?" "Can I?" "Can I?" What was his intention in doing that? Can you tell me? After that, the waiter came near me and passed by me several times, but he still never came to me. I finally got him to take my order after he brought the food to the table next to me and called out to me. It seemed like he was quicker to take orders from people who arrived later (presumably German), but was I just imagining it? In response to these reviews, you seem to have responded forcefully, saying, "Most of the employees working here are foreigners and we do not engage in such racism," but if you are unconsciously treating people in a way that makes them feel discriminated against, isn't that a problem for the restaurant? Also, if it's not discrimination, then given the system where customers make eye contact to get the waiter to come, shouldn't the waiter be able to look around more and move around more? He was going back and forth between tables several times, so couldn't he have visited other tables on his way back? It felt like a slightly inefficient way of working. Apart from this restaurant, I'd often received kind and friendly service, and had a good impression of German people, so I was disappointed.

The hotel is centrally located for visiting the castles and the beautiful lake. Parking is available in front for €10 per day. We only stayed one night, but the dinner in the hotel restaurant was excellent, as was breakfast. The staff were very kind and friendly. The only downside was the bed being too soft, but that's a personal preference.

We were pleasantly surprised. After touring the beautiful Neuschwanstein Castle, we naturally wanted to go out for a bite to eat. Of course, our expectations weren't very high due to the touristy location, but we were truly surprised. We were warmly greeted by an elderly gentleman in the entrance area. The location is truly beautiful, and the interior is very well-maintained. The menu was very extensive, and vegetarian dishes were also included. The food was beautifully and lovingly presented and very tasty. Kudos to the kitchen ;)

Very nice service! Restaurants on the tourist street are always busy, of course. Therefore, simple quality at inflated prices is normal everywhere. But the Kaiserschmarr as a sweet breakfast wasn't. Evenly shaped pieces, probably from a package with plenty of leavening and watery batter. (2 Schmarr'n, 2 small cappuccinos approx. 50 euros.) It's not necessary.

Highly recommend. Incredible location, top-notch staff, and very welcoming owner. This hotel is located directly across from the castle, and the view is amazing. Their food is VERY good, and they have a great variety of meals and beverage offerings. An extensive gift shop and outdoor seating area are also part of this property. I had the opportunity to speak at length with the owner, Annette, and she provided me with a detailed history of the property and her family's involvement. She was a very gracious host and a truly kind person. I will definitely be visiting this hotel again in the near future.

We just arrived to the city and went to eat here (7/13 at 8 pm) by the recommendation of our hotel Villa Ludwig Suite Hotel. When we arrived, we waited to be seated although the waiter saw us. Finally we decided to walk in and asked him if we can take any available table. He said very aggressive yes,and directed us to the table with unfriendly manner. After we sat, he didn’t come at all until I raised my hand with a friendly smile on my face to show him that we are ready to order. However, I didn’t call him or anything. He became so angry and yelled at me, stating he has things to do before he can come to our table. We understand that he can be busy. He could have come/greeted and informed us initially then it would be no problem. It was about his disrespectful attitude that made us so uncomfortable and unwelcome. At the end, We left without ordering.

Very charming hotel, ideally located for visiting both castles, Neuchweinstein and Hohenschwangau. The room on the first floor was a bit noisy. The room on the second floor (for my children) was large and spacious. You can go downstairs for breakfast with the dog. We had a great dinner! The breakfast was delicious. The staff was very attentive and friendly.

We visited the castle on a very windy and rainy day with two kids. After the visit, we stopped at the restaurant/cafe for hot drinks. It was around 1 pm and the male server perhaps the manager (tall with glasses, mid-aged) was beyond rude. Since we were not getting food, we were told to take seats at the outside sitting area, which I understand and had no problem with it. All the tables were empty so we sat at the nearest table after which we noticed that there was a reservation sign. The server came out and saw us and pretty much yelled at us saying “can’t you see the sign” banging the song on the table, then told us to move to the nearby table, which by the way also had a reservation sign. It was the way he was ordering us to move that made us upset, but since it was our fault that we sat at the reserved table we didn’t say anything. When we moved to the next table he told us to go, we had left our water bottle on the table we had sat before. He grabbed it and pretty much banged it down on our table and said, “you cannot leave your water here!” He was rude to the point that our kids were feeling uncomfortable. At that point, we decided to leave instead of being treated as if we were such an inconvenience to him. As we were leaving we told our kids that treating anyone like that is never OK. I understand it was during busy lunch hours, and customers coming in just for drinks may not be as profitable to the restaurant, but I was expecting more professionalism from a restaurant located in a popular destination in Germany. If he was indeed a manager, that is even more unfortunate. I hope no one will be treated as we were, and had the wonderful experience at such a beautiful town ruined because of one server/manager who perhaps was not having the best day and lacking professional training.

I recommend it to anyone looking for a quality meal in the area, with good service and a great location.

Great restaurant! We went here two evenings because we enjoyed the food so much. Unfortunately, we can't comment on the hotel as we stayed elsewhere. But if it's as good as the restaurant, then there's nothing to complain about. The service was excellent and the prices were reasonable. It's best to reserve a table on weekend evenings as it gets busy. Highly recommended 👌

Walking through the Alpine mists was like a painting by Caspar David Friedrich – where nature speaks with silence, and every step becomes meditation. Here, one does not only look at the landscape – one becomes part of it. The stay in the Alpenstuben was a true rest for the soul and body.

We arrived in the evening and since we didn't have a reservation and everything was full we got a seat on the terrace. Everything we had the chance to taste was good, the service was relatively fast. The staff seemed like they were trying to get rid of us quickly, but maybe it was just because it was late in the evening. Overall impression was okay. It's worth trying the seasonal menu.

My wife and I shared the mixed meat dinner platter and was very pleased with the portions and taste of the food. My daughters had the pork schnitzel and fries and they both said their food was very good. The mixed salad was fresh and tasty as well. The staff was very friendly and was helpful. The food was served quickly and was presented very well. If you are in the Hohenschwangau or Schwangau area I would recommend eating at the Alpenstuben.

We stayed overnight at the hotel and ate there in the evening. The room was nice, clean, and wonderfully quiet in the evening. The location is unbeatable. Dinner was also really good; everything was delicious; the goulash was super tender, and the dumpling trio was simply delicious. And the small side salad was also large and delicious! We recommend the Alpenstuben 100% :)

We were fortunate enough to stay at the Alpenstuben, right at the foot of Neuschwanstein Castle – and it was simply perfect! The motel is lovingly run, very clean, and comfortably furnished. You can immediately tell that the hotel has been built with passion. The location is unbeatable – you can practically see the castle while eating breakfast. Ideal for those who want to start the day early or end it in a relaxed manner. The breakfast was plentiful, fresh, and with many regional products – a great way to start the day! We were also impressed by the restaurant: traditional cuisine, excellently prepared, with friendly service in a family atmosphere. What's particularly nice is that, despite the proximity to the tourist hotspot, you don't feel like you're in a typical "passing restaurant," but rather truly welcome. Thank you for the wonderful time – we'd love to come back!

Very tasty food right at the foot of Neuschwanstein Castle.

We had a tiny "Romantic" room, but with a new, tiny bathroom, balcony, and a view of Neuschwanstein. Perfect location for a castle tour. Just step out of the hotel, take a few steps to the right, and you're on foot, by horse-drawn carriage, or by bus up to Neuschwanstein. Be sure to book your castle tour online in advance. Otherwise, you won't be able to get in. The bus and carriage only cost a few euros.

We had goulash soup. It was delicious! The staff was friendly and welcoming.

I haven't stayed at the hotel but I visited the restaurant. The pasta was good, came out very fast too. They verbally ask for a tip, when bringing out the bill.

While visiting the Neuschwanstein Castle, we stopped here for lunch. I had the pork knuckle with sauerkrat and a dumpling while my husband had goulash. We both enjoyed our meals and are glad our tour guide recommended it. It was very filling also. Water costs extra. Prices were not cheap.

Well received, excellent meal, staff in the dining room and correct welcome. The only problem happened on Monday 5th in the evening, the room was well cleaned on Tuesday morning. But surprise on Wednesday when we returned in the evening our room was not made, the bed was in the condition we left it in the morning when we left. We reported it. A person came to see, and told us will ensure that tomorrow Thursday the room be well done, except we have to leave the hotel Thursday morning. We even made our bed. Noys even Disappointed by this service which should have been done. We paid for a service not provided. Damage !!!!!

Visited the restaurant, food was out in less than 10 minutes, the lemonade was absolutely delicious, the burger too, huge portions, great location. Too stuffed and happy to write a more thought out review, all that matters is that everything was delicious and everyone I went with agreed.

My wife and I spent one night at the Hotel Alpenstuben. The room was clean and the beds were very good. The breakfast was really great, so we would be happy to come back at any time. The staff are very friendly and the location is very good. Lots of tourists during the day and it's very quiet at night.

Extremely disappointed and disrespected by the owner of Restaurant Alpenstuben. The experience felt blatantly racist. There were five of us, and we ordered five main courses. However, the owner insisted we had ordered six and forcefully served us an extra steak dish priced at over €30. Out of politeness, we accepted it since it had already been cooked. But at the end of the meal, when we explained that we never ordered that dish, the owner simply said, "It was in the system, nothing I can do," and then pressured us to pay a 10% tip. Shame on you, sir. Completely unacceptable behavior.

Nous avons mangé au restaurant de l’Hôtel Alpenstuben. Les portions sont généreuses et le cadre est agréable, mais la cuisine reste assez ordinaire, sans vraie surprise ni touche marquante. Le service est poli, sans être particulièrement chaleureux. L’addition, quant à elle, est un peu salée au vu de l’expérience globale. Une halte convenable si l’on a faim, mais pas forcément une adresse qu’on recommanderait pour le plaisir gustatif.

Der Service entsprach eher einer Touribude und dem auf der Website beschriebenen Standard überhaupt nicht. Mein Fleischgericht mit Spätzle war unerfreulich. Das Fleisch akzeptabel, die Beilagen-Spätzle völlig matschig, mit knochenharten geschmcksneutralen (hier unpassenden) Schmelzzwiebeln oben drauf. Beides wie aus der Tüte. Man hatte den Eindruck dies war einfach aus einem Käsespätzlegericht drauf geklascht. Meine Partnerin ass ein Paniertes Schnitzel mit ebenfalls nicht dahinpassendem Kraut darauf. Man hatte das Gefühl Küchen- und Servierpersonal haben keine Ahnung von deutscher bzw. guter Küche. Auch dieses genussfrei. Dazu ein Kellner wie aus der Imbissbude. Wir waren sehrsehr enttäuscht. Das Geld hätten wir uns sparen können

A nice little hotel in a prime location for the royal castles. The staff was very nice, the food was very tasty, the price was reasonable for the location and the location had a wonderful view of Neuschwanstein from the balcony. Would come back at any time

On March 15, 2025, we went to dinner in the evening. The food is very tasty, but the service is not polite at all. It seems that the waiter is not satisfied with his work or is already tired. We did not see any smiles or respect for us as clients. I would not recommend this restaurant to my friends. They didn't deliver the order, but it was in the check, and they showed us 3 times that we had to leave a tip. I consider tipping for good service.

Pas trop de choix en février, il aurait fallu aller à Schwangau (5 mn en voiture) … nous avons regretté de ne pas pas l’avoir fait. Salle sympathique, rustique. Mais plats sans intérêt, très salés. Bref nous n’avons vraiment pas aimé. Addition salée aussi une quarantaine d’euros par personne pour un plat, un verre de vin, de l’eau. Et le patron insistant lourdement sur le service non compris et quasi « obligatoire » . Bref à éviter d’ après nous.

If u go there around 11am and ask for breakfast they will laugh straight at your face and tell u to come back tomorrow...very funny...(but as per waitress they don't serve breakfast at all...) It is very sad that in such a beautiful place are people with such an attitude...

My partner and I were on a coach tour and visited this busy restaurant for lunch. The service was excellent, we were served by a very friendly man. Although it was busy service was good. I chose sausage with sauerkraut and potatoes, my partner chose a cheeseburger. Both meals were excellent. When we left there was a large queue waiting outside. The town was very busy with lots of tourists visiting the castles. Well worth visiting.

This review is solely for the restaurant. The food is pretty good. The seafood soup is one of the best I ever taste. The beef soup with noodle and pasta was yummy. The knuckle was okay. Presentation of food is good!

We ate at the Alpenstube and were absolutely thrilled! The atmosphere is cozy and typically Alpine, decorated with great attention to detail. The food was simply amazing – every dish was freshly prepared and full of flavor. The [name of dish, e.g., "homemade cheese spaetzle" or "regional specialties"] deserves special mention; they were simply perfect. The service was warm, attentive, and made us feel completely at home. You can immediately tell that the work here is done with passion. A real highlight for us and highly recommended for anyone traveling in the area. We'll definitely be back!

Review for the restaurant: We stayed at Villa Ludwig Suite Hotel and the receptionist recommended us to eat at Alpenstuben. The receptionist said we’d get special rates and I mentioned it at the restaurant just to joke around but the female waitress didn’t reply to what I said with no facial expressions and just sat us down then left quickly. Then an older male waiter came. I was very excited and started to order food and he only accepted orders for drinks. He talked down to me in a rude tone. It was either “His way or no way!” The food was only so so for both my husband and I and overpriced for what it was. Definitely don’t recommend unless you like cold service and to be talked down like his maid. Also, I paid for the dinner with my Apple Pay. The waiter asked me to sign on the receipt. Isn’t Apple Pay secure enough???

€18 for two cups of hot milk and half a liter of water! With annoyed looks because we sat at the table for an hour!

Checked in on 12/7. The location of the accommodation is quite good. It is very close to the visitor center and the carriage ride. Parking is conveniently located in the open space opposite the accommodation. After parking, you can go to the counter to apply for a certificate (fee required) and put it in front of the car window. The room was clean, the toilet was small, and the service staff was kind and specially helped me arrange a room with Neuschwanstein Castle that I could see from the balcony. It was really great! There is no elevator in the B&B and we need to carry our luggage upstairs by ourselves. On the way, we met a male service staff who offered to help us carry our luggage. I am really grateful to him! Dined at the restaurant in the evening and ordered the pig's feet which was not bad. The breakfast the next day was very rich and the dining environment was comfortable. The yogurt and bread were delicious👍If I have the chance to come back, I will choose to stay here again👍

Writing for the restaurant: Racist to Asian people and unfriendly to all customers in general. We come with our French friend, we speak proper English, and the old guy with specs (we suspect is the boss) speaks English fluently and can understands us completely . However, the boss is so so rude to us and to other customers. We were soooo disappointed by the attitude, we came because we saw review on XiaoHongShu APP by the Chinese people saying that the food here is nice. Restaurant review - super cute interior, warm and welcoming! We had to get our Käsespätzle to go as we ran out of time before our bus, but it was absolutely delicious and packaged with care 😋

Stayed at the Villa Ludwig and had dinner in the Alpenstuben Restaurant. Both the food and service were first class. Excellent food and very warm and inviting atmosphere. Highly recommend to anyone.

Restaurant review, not the hotel. Flavorful food with fast service. I had the grilled chicken with rice and vegetables. My husband had the burger with fries. My one negative comment is even if you pay to eat here, you still have to pay to use the bathrooms. I know paying for toilettes is common in Europe, but feel that spending $60 on food and drink should warrant a free bathroom trip.

Unfortunately only for one night and one dinner but we didn't regret it. Great hotel/restaurant with a friendly atmosphere throughout. The rooms were in very good condition with wooden laminate floors and we felt comfortable. The dinner and breakfast were very good, everyone found something to fill them up. There is a parking lot opposite the hotel where we were able to leave our car for 10 euros during our stay in Schwangau. We can definitely recommend this hotel and the restaurant and will visit it again if we are looking for somewhere to stay overnight nearby.

Hotel WITHOUT ELEVATOR, small but correct room, everything clean even though the hallway always has cleaning supplies and bedding in the middle. Very well located, it has a bar and restaurant service as well as a souvenir shop and parking, 40 meters away is the ticket office for the castles and the museum as well as the horse carts. Restaurant with good and good products but expensive (like all those in the area).

Place to eat in the Raja Ludwing 2 castle area, comfortable, clean, there are toilets, the burgers are a must try, on holidays and weekends, come early so you don't queue

The room was small but very cozy and nice. The rooms also have a very nice bathroom. The staff SUPER FRIENDLY!!!! And the breakfast is just perfect. Especially the nutella maschi ne and the pancakes!

One of my favorite hotels. I can only recommend it.
