Ratskeller in Passau

The restaurant was chosen because it was difficult to get a reservation at short notice for the Christmas holidays. The food arrived after a short wait, as the restaurant was only moderately busy at lunchtime on Boxing Day. Our experience might be the reason for this. From the limited menu, we ordered: Allgäu Mountain Cheese Spätzle for €15.90, served in a stylish iron pan with a wooden handle. Unfortunately, it was already obvious from the pan that the Spätzle couldn't have been cooked in it. The already medium-sized portion quickly became lukewarm in the cold pan and was almost cold by the end. A shame, as the characteristic flavor of the mountain cheese was also undetectable, and we felt the need to add more salt and pepper. Brewmaster's Salad for €15.90. The fried turkey strips, some up to 10 cm long, were dry, and the baked potato cubes had a whiff of old frying oil. The pork cordon bleu (€17.90) and vegetable strudel were satisfactory. However, warmed plates would have been a welcome addition. The service was commendable; the very friendly and helpful staff readily provided hot water to warm the baby food we had brought with us.

Otherwise, the food here is usually quite good throughout the year. Sure, prices are rising, but we were here today wanting to end our Boxing Day holiday. Looking at the menu, we had hoped for something different, at least for Christmas. If I had known I was at the "Schnitzelwirt" (a restaurant specializing in schnitzel), I would have booked somewhere else. Pork schnitzel, cordon bleu, breaded pork cutlet, etc., but as I said, prices are rising. However, €16.90 for two small breaded pork cutlets with three potatoes seems excessive to me. I have a lot of experience in the restaurant industry, and over €15 for Käsespätzle (cheese spaetzle) is insane. Like others have already described, I can only agree with them about the roast pork. But what's the point of leaving a review here? If we or others don't come back, then others will, like boat people or tourists. It's a shame I didn't take a picture of the food. Of course, everything has to be quick, and the kitchen has to get it done because of the waiting time, etc., but the onion roast that many people like was unfortunately not on offer. A pair of Debreziner sausages for €15 would have been another option. A good win-win situation at Christmas.

It was okay, nothing more. But charging extra for ketchup packets when there's only one packet included seemed very cheeky to us.

Warning about the roast pork!! Lapsely presented, tasteless, simply slapped onto the plate, an eyesore even just visually, the pale!! gravy is supposed to be a dark beer gravy, served with bland cabbage and pre-made dumplings!! Probably only aimed at tourists who only come once anyway. We (locals) won't be eating there again either!!

We had a late lunch. There was no crowd. They greeted us warmly and seated us quickly. My wife was bothered by being seated next to a very warm heater and asked if we could move, as there were many open seats. The young female waitress said she would have to inquire; we didn’t take that harshly, and we were allowed to relocate. I ordered the Gebackenes Surschnitzel. She took our orders quickly and the turnaround was appropriate. When I received my dish, I thought there was something missing as it was fairly plain; they hadn’t included the cranberry dish. Before receiving my check I asked to see the menu again to verify if I was correct. When I pointed it out, she believed/suggested I had received it. She did ask if I wanted a coffee to accommodate, but we were ready to leave. She didn’t return with a bill, and we had to ask another server for it. Our full price bill was presented without mentioning of other suggested methods to address the deficiency. When we left, I saw why our bill was not initially forthcoming after the inquiry; the female server was sitting down having her own late lunch enjoying her phone. To summarize, the food was good, and I believe it would have been even better had I received the cranberry dish, but the attention to detail was not there, and there didn’t appear to be a reason for that lack in service. I would not recommend this establishment.

Ratskeller Passau – a great experience in the heart of the historic city Beautiful setting in the basement of the historic town hall, pleasant atmosphere and first-class service. The place has a charm – you can feel the history and at the same time everything is very cozy and clean. The food was delicious, honest and the portions were really generous. Traditional Bavarian cuisine in a more modern presentation, wonderfully seasoned, fresh ingredients. I especially recommend the grilled meat and the local specialty – sausages with cabbage and potato dumplings. Beer perfectly treated, exactly as it should be. The service is nice, attentive, willing to advise and nothing is a problem. The price / quality ratio is very good, especially in the tourist area. An ideal place to relax after a walk through the city. I would love to come back.

A lovely, rustic restaurant with typical Bavarian specialties and delicious Passau beer. The service was excellent, and the food was absolutely delicious. However, I would recommend making a reservation if you're traveling with a group, as the restaurant was always busy.

I've lived in the city for years and last stopped there after a bike ride for the first time in a while. I'm 41, but I too now find it inappropriate for a waitress to be constantly addressed with "du" and a pseudo-casual tone by a young man (early 20s?), and to be told, when I point out that the first two half-liters were poorly poured (no foam, well under the measuring line, a hefty €4.60), that we always do it that way. That would be something clearly wrong. You should get what you pay for... without any notice from the customer! To my credit, the next drink was poured as it should have been. Unfortunately, only after requesting it or discussing it. The prices for food and drinks are too high in my opinion.

It was very good, Surbraten was a bit oversalted and Sauerkraut could be a bit more subtle. Radler and unfiltered lager (Ratskeller Zwickl) were great. The staff is really friendly.

Stag party with 14 people. At 6:30 p.m., we were no longer allowed to sit outside, despite a reservation. We couldn't talk to the manager. Some of the food was cold. We left the restaurant at 8:50 p.m. and saw that guests were still sitting outside. The pretzels and butter were officially paid for by the tourist guide—we were billed separately. I think we definitely wouldn't come back here again ✌🏼😉

They didn't allow people inside the restaurant, only on the terraces, and that day it was quite hot, even with the covers on.

This is a beautiful city to visit. There's plenty to see and do here, including churches and monuments that are open to the public. You can also take a boat trip with beautiful views and perhaps a snack and a drink. There are plenty of lunch options, as there are several restaurants on every street.

Centrally located on the Danube, not far from the bustling city center, with a unique terrace. Wonderful views of the Danube and the passing ships. A cold beer from the Passau Löwenbrauerei brewery served by a lively, young waitress and a hearty Bavarian snack. What more could you want? I'll definitely be back very soon. We just wanted to have a beer and sit outside under the umbrellas. The waitress wouldn't let us, however, because it was supposed to rain. There were no rain clouds in sight. And even if there had been, we could have sat under umbrellas, as the outdoor restaurant was only half full. We would have liked a bit more flexibility. Otherwise, we can't say anything negative. It's definitely worth a visit.

The fried chicken was huge, my wife had the chicken salad, which was also delicious. However, the whole place felt a bit like a tourist trap.

We stop here every year on our way to or from Croatia. The food was good. Unfortunately, due to the large number of bees, we couldn't get in (due to a lack of staff). Therefore, the food was a bit complicated due to the cranberries with the schnitzel. The restrooms, however, were truly terrible. You really need to work on that.

I actually have very fond memories of the Ratskeller. I wanted a shandy and a beer with my girlfriend, but unfortunately, it was obviously diluted with water. Neither the beer nor the shandy had any flavor. I've always had fond memories of the Ratskeller.

A centrally located restaurant in Passau with spacious dining rooms and an equally large terrace. The food is completely typical of the region, very good, accompanied by good beer and wine. Reservations are recommended, especially during the tourist season. Excellent value for money. Very friendly and attentive service. It's a good idea to walk there due to the limited parking. Wheelchair access is available, although there are a few steps to the restrooms.

Ratskeller in Passau is located right in the Gothic town hall on Rathauspl. The interior and the view from the windows enhance the unique genius loci that the place breathes. The staff will welcome you with a smile, willingly tolerate imperfections in German and can recommend what the chef has come up with the best. The Helles beers on tap here are full of flavor and fresh, the food is solid – even though it is not primarily a restaurant for gourmets, I liked it. If you are planning a tourist walk around Passau, this establishment belongs on the itinerary as much as the cathedral, castle or museums.

The menu describes different products than those that actually end up on your plate. The menu says loin, but I received rump steak.

The food was a complete disaster. We had the redfish and the knuckle of pork. Everything arrived within five minutes of ordering. The fish was frozen, the knuckle of pork was bone dry and hard, probably kept warm for hours. The dumplings and potato salad also seemed to be just convenience foods. A real shame, never again.

The Allgäu mountain cheese spaetzle wasn't bad, but not particularly good either. It wasn't really hot and unfortunately, it wasn't cooked in a pan; it was simply re-portioned. Also, the portion wasn't as large as one would expect from other restaurants of this type.
