On October 7, 2025, we were invited by Küpper Kälte und klima Technik, and we had a fantastic time. The food was excellent, and the service was excellent. We'll be back.

Beautiful restaurant in a fantastic location right by the lake. The food arrived quickly and everyone enjoyed it – they also served Greek wine, which went wonderfully with it. The atmosphere was lively, albeit a bit loud in places. Overall, though, a truly enjoyable visit; we were all satisfied.

I think the quality of the food has unfortunately declined significantly compared to, for example, 1-2 years ago.

Classic Greek cuisine. Delicious, well-portioned dishes. Attentive and friendly staff. The location, right on the lake, is unbeatable. Sunday lunchtimes are busy, so we recommend calling ahead.

Very, very tasty at your place! But right from the start. A very friendly welcome and constant checks to see if we were missing anything or needed anything. The food was incredibly delicious and the portions were very generous. The price-performance ratio and quality are very good. If we're ever in the area again, we'll be happy to come back.

Proto am Hengsteysee serves Greek and traditional cuisine in a lovely setting. You can sit inside or in the beer garden. Although there are trees providing shade, umbrellas are set up everywhere, which I don't think are necessary. Without them, the outdoor atmosphere would actually be even nicer. The staff is attentive and friendly, but naturally a bit hectic during busy times. The food was very tasty. I had the gyro, among other things, and it was extremely good quality! Highly recommended!

It was our first time there and we were a bit disappointed. The dishes we ordered were missing mayo, even though we had ordered it twice. The tzatziki tasted very bland and lacked any seasoning. The meat was quite dry and not really edible without sauce. The best part was the salad. We would have liked to try dessert, but the waiter said the kitchen was completely overwhelmed, so my mother had to pack up her leftovers to take home herself, even though others had packed them up. Because we didn't want to give them any more work, we skipped dessert.

We enjoy being here and can wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant.

Unfortunately, I don't recommend it. Even though there were only a handful of guests, we had to wait a long time for the food, and unfortunately, it was frozen convenience food with little flavor. It was far too expensive, especially since sauces cost a hefty surcharge.

Went there again on Sunday; it was very busy, the beer garden was full and even the inside was busy. Despite the wait, the service was as fast and friendly as ever, and the food was of the usual high quality.

Today's update: Unfortunately, it's been dismantled, and the quality isn't as good anymore... One meal had to be sent back because it was cold. My medallions in the pan were only just warm enough; they should have been sizzling, in my opinion... Service was very friendly, as always, and the atmosphere was relaxed. We were there this afternoon and were actually able to snag a table outside. And despite the unexpected rush—there was literally a bus stop right outside—the waiters were very competent, very friendly, and even took the time to chat a few times... The food was freshly prepared, super delicious, and hot... There was also fresh cake. In addition to the well-known Greek dishes like gyros and bifteki, the menu also offers exciting other typical Greek dishes, such as feta in puff pastry with honey and sesame. All the other dishes served to guests looked truly appetizing and appealing. The interior is tastefully decorated, has plenty of space, and the restrooms are very clean... We certainly won't be the last time we go there! Thumbs up :-)

Greek restaurant with small event space and outdoor dining right on the Ruhr River. Very attentive staff, although a waiter who rambles in Italian is a bit odd for a Greek restaurant. We went there to celebrate a birthday, and it was good, but unfortunately, there was a group of the same size in the same room, so it wasn't exactly quiet. The food was good and plentiful.

This is now our 12th Greek restaurant we've visited here in Germany. And I have to say, the disappointment was immense. In my opinion, the worst Greek restaurant there has ever been. A table was reserved two days in advance, but we arrived, but it wasn't available. We waited about 12 minutes, which we then spent dodging waiters in the lobby. Then we were assigned a table, which was very disappointing, because the table was actually in a walkway; it was simply placed between two large tables, which created a totally uncomfortable atmosphere. After I complained, we were promised a new table, which also took another 20 minutes. The new table was only half-cleaned, as was necessary. The drinks we ordered at the first table also didn't arrive at the second table until about 20 minutes later. Since we had already chosen our dish, we wanted to order, and our drinks arrived, but they were delayed, and we had to wait another 8 minutes. While we were eagerly awaiting the meal, our patience was tested; it took 34 minutes for the food to arrive. The food arrived and...???? A disaster!!! The meat skewer was rather cold and dry!!! The fries were oversalted and soggy. The salad bar was in an adjoining room and only had the bare essentials: no onions, no tomatoes, no olives. You had to guess what the sauces were. This was the worst restaurant I've ever known. The service was very attentive, but it couldn't be justified at any time. The decor was also rather subpar. Once and never again!

Definitely recommend... We were there with five people - the outdoor area was well-filled, including two large groups. The service was very prompt, friendly, and always with a funny remark. The food came quickly and tasted very good. The portions were generous, and the prices were absolutely reasonable. If we're ever in the area again, we'd be happy to come back.

I'm unfortunately writing this review a little late because we somehow missed it. We celebrated our wedding there with food and drinks. We as a couple and all of our guests were absolutely thrilled with the food and the ambience. The team working there is fantastic. They were more than just competent when speaking to us beforehand about preparations, etc. The price was really good. The best thing though was that you had the feeling that someone really looked after you. There were basically two or three members of staff with us at all times, bringing us drinks, asking questions, etc. Everyone else and I were really impressed. I can really recommend it wholeheartedly. We got married on May 7th. It was a simply beautiful day out there. At least 5 stars!

Top-notch service, quick service. (Greek) Food for 7 people arrived at the same time. Nice, quiet location under large trees and parasols with a view of the western lake. This is our 4th time here, and we'd love to come back.

Fully deserved 5 stars! Really tasty food, everything fresh and crispy. A modest but delicious salad bar is available for main courses. The service is extremely nice and helpful. In short - a place you just want to come back to. It's a pity that the parking lot nearby is so small...

A great location right on Lake Hengstey. I like to eat there privately and was also there for a wedding reception in May. If you don't want to make a fuss, this is a great place for your wedding party. The value for money is good, the food is very good, and the beer garden is large and inviting. The staff is quick and super friendly. Afterward, you can enjoy your meal with a walk around the lake. Reservations for dinner are recommended. It gets quite busy at lunchtime. I definitely recommend it 💝

One star is still too many!!!! I remember the place from previous tenants; for a long time, there was a very good Italian restaurant there. The tables outside in the beer garden are now covered with blue and white wax tablecloths; no lantern, no candle, no flowers, just the bare table, pretty unloved. The seats are simple garden chairs; I didn't find them particularly comfortable. A cushion would certainly help, though, and it would make it more comfortable, but that's probably too much effort. The waiter came quite quickly. His greeting was a curt "Hello." He handed us the menu without a word, and before we even had a chance to look at it, he asked us what we wanted to drink, which didn't sound particularly polite either. I actually already had my coffee ready, but it was my boyfriend's birthday and he really wanted Greek food, and since I'd invited him, I didn't want to spoil his evening. That's why I replied, rather rudely, that we'd like to take a look at the menu before choosing our drinks. The drinks arrived fairly quickly, and then we chose our food. My friend had a grill plate with three different meats, including a skewer; that was the "proto-plate." I ordered pork steak with Metaxa sauce, served in a pan, with a bowl of over-fried, hard fries. There wasn't a single leaf of green on the plate, not the smallest piece of vegetables. My friend also had gyros on his plate; there was no trace of tzatziki; it was just overcooked, dry meat. My pork steak in Metaxa sauce was also tough as leather; any Greek snack bar could probably have done a better job. The Metaxa sauce, which I've had much better elsewhere, didn't help either. It was by far the worst meal I've ever been served, a disgrace for the high price! I then ate one and a half of the three pork steaks and a few of the rock-hard fries; the fries bowl was still almost full. In the restroom, I met a woman who told me she'd ordered a bifteki, which she described as disgusting. I asked her if they didn't serve salad with the meal, and she told me there was a salad bar in the restaurant!?! That was the last straw for me, because the waitress didn't even mention it when we ordered. On the way back, I ran into our waiter. My boyfriend had already told him while clearing the dishes that everything was overcooked and dry, and he missed a bit of green on his plate. The reply was, "the parsley was out"!?! As an apology for the bad food, he offered two espressos. I literally told him he could "stick it in his hat" and that the food was terrible, and I only found out by chance that there was actually!!! a salad buffet. His response was, "It's on the menu!!!" So that means I should study the entire menu?!? I then asked him for cutlery because I wanted to eat more salad to fill me up. I told him I wouldn't tip and that this one time I would write a review that certainly wouldn't be great. His response regarding the lack of a tip was, "It wasn't necessary anyway, he had enough customers, we should pay and leave the restaurant and never come back." Exactly... he doesn't need to tell us twice!

Always worth a visit. The location in the beer garden right on Lake Hengstey with a view of Hohensyburg Castle is just perfect. The staff is very friendly and the food is excellent.

We celebrated our wedding there. The team worked together well and nothing was lacking. Everything was beautifully presented, and the food was absolutely fantastic. Everything was so incredibly delicious and fresh. The fish platter was the first thing to be eaten. It was truly fantastic. Everyone was thrilled, and the value for money was more than good. Update on the rating 05/2025 - Some of the service was unrecognizable as staff, quite rude and not appropriate for the restaurant. The basic rules of etiquette for restaurant staff were not implemented. - At the salad buffet, apart from tomatoes and iceberg lettuce, there were only pickled vegetables to be found. - the plate for two people is still quite rich, but today has clear weaknesses. 1. the meat was very dry and the roasting strips were more like black burn marks 2. Apart from meat and fries, no side dishes such as rice, grilled vegetables or tomatoes, no tzatziki or any sauce You could order these separately for 5.50 euros I think that's part of a grill plate for two. Even mayo and ketchup are charged extra. - Drink prices in the upper segment, not appropriate for this restaurant Conclusion: we won't be coming back for a while because there are much better Greek restaurants in the area. Even some Greek snack bars offer better meat and gyros! That's why I deduct two stars! We were out cycling today and spontaneously stopped in the beer garden! The food was super delicious! The view of the lake is of course to die for and the waiters were all very nice and attentive. The highlight for dessert was ice cream for our daughter, even with chocolate sprinkles.

The starters were really delicious. I have experienced the “gyros plate for two” as tasting better. After the starter we had to wait 40 minutes for the main course - to be fair, it was very full, including 2 communion parties... at least the salad buffet saved us from starving 😉

It was well attended there. We didn't eat anything Actually we just had to go to the toilet, so we also had to eat something. The Greek moccha was horrible, half the tiny cup was full of coffee grounds. A mouthful for the price...not again

Greek restaurant located directly on Lake Hengstey. Great ambience and delicious food. Even with a larger group, the food was served quickly and at the same time. With great weather, the beer garden was well filled. Inside was also fully booked. It is advisable to reserve if there are several people. We would be happy to come back.

Very nice terrace, attentive service, the dishes were very tasty and sufficient. Salads from the buffet and dressing good selection. Prices are very good, there is a small minus point, we found €0.80 for 1 bag of mayonnaise and also a small mineral water a bit overpriced.

Were there on a recommendation, the ambience inside and outside was good. Unfortunately we weren't so impressed with the food, the meat on the proto plate was dry, the moussaka had potatoes that were still very firm and almost raw, and the bechamel sauce was too thick. We complained about the potatoes, but there was no response. Too bad.

Lunch eaten alone outside on Saturday. Table was not cleaned of tree husk, cutlery was thrown at the end of the table for 4! (wrapped in napkin). A coffee order was forgotten. When I ordered my food, I wasn't informed that there was a salad buffet in the restaurant and that I could have gotten a salad there with my meal. What's that supposed to mean? After I had finished eating, I saw another guest come out of the restaurant with a salad plate. I was surprised and asked the service employee, who confirmed this. When I asked why he didn't tell me this before ordering/food, I didn't get an answer. I had pork steak with French fries, the meat was ok, so it wasn't fried too dry, but the fries were too hard, too thin, lots of hard crumbs, how can anyone find that good.

Kalimera!! When the weather is nice, there is nothing better than staring at Lake Hengstey from the terrace in front of the Proto. The service guys are always in a good mood and the food is delicious. Once Jorgo has made the bifteki fresh, you won't eat it anywhere else. Off to the lake!
