Mövenpick Restaurant Zur Historischen Mühle in Potsdam

We were in the beer garden in the historic mill. The ambiance itself wasn't bad, but that was it. A subpar Aperol Spritz. Some kind of pre-mixed liquor for €6.50. Absolutely undrinkable. The beer was lukewarm and also subpar.

Finally, the breakfast buffet is back! We used to come here regularly for breakfast/brunch, back when it was still under Mövenpick. Now the new owner is offering a breakfast buffet again – with excellent quality and a very good selection. The staff is attentive, friendly, and makes you feel completely at home. The atmosphere in the conservatory is simply beautiful. Everything was beautifully set up after the renovation. We'd love to come back!

We waited in line for 10 minutes, the only group of three, and were repeatedly ignored instead of getting one of the dozens of free tables. You might have to show up in your frock coat and dream dress, which would be clearly overdress for this glass-walled beer garden dive.

Very nice place, but unfortunately we had to wait a long time for our food. There were very few staff members, and it was very disorganized. If, like us, you've booked a tour of the castle afterward (with a decent time interval), you'll have to allow quite a bit of time for your meal, so unfortunately, it's not something you can eat in between meals.

I had lunch at this restaurant. I ordered the lunch menu, but it wasn't explained to me that the main course had to be chosen, and so I wasn't able to get the dish I wanted. Furthermore, the main course was served without the starter (the salad). After asking a server, I was assured it would arrive shortly, but it never arrived. In the end, I wasn't able to fully enjoy the menu I ordered, which was very disappointing.

We went to the historic mill for breakfast brunch yesterday. A wonderful, well-kept, and clean atmosphere. 🥰 We were very impressed by the great selection and the truly excellent service❤️💪💯. The buffet was very plentiful, very well presented, and fresh, even though we arrived half an hour before closing time. We received very friendly and courteous service from the moment we arrived until we left❤️🌞Thank you, we will be happy to come back💯❤️💪.

Had the worst currywurst of my life here.

Typical German restaurant. It's not cheap, but it's very good. German is essential; the menu is not in any other language.

When we ate here, I got a caraway salad with a hint of cabbage... actually, the side dish was a coleslaw. There was so much caraway in it, it was simply inedible. My friend had the "Wienerschnitzel" (Wiener schnitzel), the potato salad was more like mashed potatoes than a typical salad, and the schnitzel was far from a Wienerschnitzel. The only nice thing was the palm trees and the ambiance that came with it.

The place is beautiful, the food is delicious, the service is extremely polite, but at the same time incredibly slow. While it wasn't full, we only had to wait 15 minutes to order and another 30 minutes for our food to arrive. There were 4 waiters working, leisurely, not at all in a hurry. We spent 12 nights in Berlin. We've never encountered such slowness anywhere, although we ate in a restaurant at least once almost every day. It's a shame to ruin a restaurant like that. Only go here if you have enough time, like to wait and can stay calm! You'd better take bus 695 and go to a restaurant in the center of Potsdam.

Absolutely disappointing: After waiting for several minutes at the sign for a table assignment, not being noticed even when the guests in front of us were escorted to a table, and after my son asked for a menu, we left. The staff could have at least briefly contacted us (did they want to sit inside or outside, or was the next table about to become available). Unfortunately, no one came, even though there were up to three employees working the entire time. The adjacent beer garden wasn't any better.

The food was okay. Not outstanding. Since there aren't many options nearby, you're "reliant" on what you get. The waitress ordered the wrong children's meal in the kitchen, so it had to be returned and recooked. We had to wait a long time for the food, but we were informed in advance when we asked for a table (so this doesn't affect the review). The cake counter looked very good, but we were there for lunch.

Unfortunately, you can't give zero stars. We ate here in the beer garden on August 7, 2025. We had currywurst with fries. It was the most disgusting currywurst we've ever had. It didn't deserve that name at all. It was a cross between a wiener and a bockwurst in a casing, the kind we only know from the plastic packaging in the supermarket. This "sausage" lay cut in half on the cardboard. They had apparently only seen a grill or roasting pan from a distance; they weren't even browned and were almost cold. The pale curry sauce was then poured over this not-even-lukewarm "thing." We've never been served anything so bad. I don't even want to talk about the price here; after all, it's the beer garden next to the fine restaurant! Never again!!!

Tourist trap. In a place like Sanssouci, you obviously don't have to deliver quality. Enough guests come every day who are taken in by the seemingly pleasant ambiance; you don't need regulars in this location. We were there today with guests from Hamburg and were embarrassed. We were looking forward to a salad with chanterelle mushrooms. What was served was—let's just say unexpectedly—cold, pickled chanterelle mushrooms from a can over sour red salad and some chips. A 0.4 l Pilsner cost €6. Never again! Please avoid this rip-off place!

The four of us wanted to sit outside in the restaurant. There was a sign at the entrance saying we would be seated. The two waiters kept us standing there for over 10 minutes. Even though there were free tables, we weren't allowed to sit. When we asked, we were rudely brushed off; we had just arrived. The lady left and didn't come back for a while. When she came back, we asked if we could sit at a free round table. She curtly replied: "No, it still needs to be cleared." There was only one glass on the table. Then we left. That's anti-customer service. The staff should be dismissed without notice.

Everything was fantastic! Our experience at Zur Historischen Mühle exceeded all expectations. The atmosphere is charming, full of history, and surrounded by beautiful scenery. The service was friendly and attentive throughout, and the food was simply delicious — beautifully presented, made with fresh ingredients, and full of authentic flavors. A month ago, we spontaneously moved our son's 4th birthday party and his little guests to the beer garden, complete with a treasure hunt and other activities, after the bad weather prevented us from having a picnic. We were pretty desperate that morning, wondering how we could make the very first birthday with his little friends a great day for the children despite the rain. We received such a warm welcome, and at this point, a huge thank you to the caretaker; you're the best and saved our little one's birthday! Thank you so much for making this afternoon unforgettable with your ideas (including the tablecloth blowing off in the storm and you spontaneously fetching pegs). Thank you also to your two lovely colleagues who provided us with bratwurst, fries, and other treats. See you soon, we'll be back, of course! 5 stars 🌟

I was here for a private event and was really impressed by the service. The staff was very attentive (timely refills of the buffet and drinks), who were not only friendly but also flexible in responding to requests. Top-notch! The location is also ideally situated near the park and surrounded by greenery, with less traffic in the evenings, of course. I also loved the ambiance. Thank you very much!

Food is solid but you wait over 1 hour for your food with a reservation

The wait for everything is excruciatingly long, even for a waiter to take your order or for the bill. The prices are quite high, the food is okay, but the service is abysmal. You have to ask for everything multiple times. My friend got his dessert before his first course, which speaks for itself.

We were there last week for my birthday. Unfortunately, it was a private party inside, so we sat outside. Which was okay because the weather was nice. I chose a trout and I must honestly say, I've never eaten such bad trout! The skin was inedible, the potatoes weren't fresh, and even half a liter of butter sauce couldn't save it—quite the opposite. My husband had the veal steak with 8 chanterelle mushrooms(!) and terrible French fries. If you've ever experienced the former Möwenpick, you can only leave very disappointed. The price-performance ratio is absolutely not right; probably mostly tourists who don't complain or think that this is the only quality you can get in Potsdam. The waiter was very friendly and attentive, and it wasn't his fault. He even offered a coffee as an apology. I'm very disappointed and would advise anyone not to try this cuisine.

Chanterelle goulash, as it says on the menu for €19.50, was a few sloppy mushrooms in a reddish broth. It has nothing to do with goulash. The bread dumplings appear to be industrially produced. We read the name Alexander Dressel somewhere????

Rarely have we experienced such poor service. We sat here for about 20 minutes. Waving, etc. No one served us. The waiters just stared around. Then they left. Unfortunately, it was a waste of time.

It was supposed to be a lovely afternoon with delicious coffee and cake. Unfortunately, the service staff were either overwhelmed or unmotivated. After placing our order, we waited a good quarter of an hour for our drinks. The cake arrived when the drinks were already cold. Special requests like a tea infuser were ignored. Reordering was almost impossible, as the service staff avoided all eye contact. The coffee was obviously from a fully automatic machine. A shame. There's still room for improvement.

Very friendly waiters and waitresses. Very good food. Even if you sometimes have to wait a little longer than usual (the waiters and waitresses rush to everyone as quickly as possible, but there are sometimes too few for the high demand, so please bear with us!), it's worth it. At least it gives you time to have a good conversation when you meet people. Unlike in other restaurants, you don't have to leave after 30 minutes, 20 of which are full of everyone, because the next person would rather have your table. So bring your time and a taste for good food.

Beautiful setting but absolutely no service. We stood in line for 15 minutes waiting to be assigned a table. No eye contact from staff, restaurant more than half empty, 8 guests got up from their tables because although they got seated no waiter ever acknowledged them. I cannot imagine how much business this place loses every day. I guess that's what happens when you're the only restaurant at a popular tourist destination.

When I was there a few years ago I liked it better.

Beer garden with great seating in the Schatzen

The ladies in the service, although they have limited skills, are very friendly and attentive to the guests. The young man, who was clearly a manager and authorized cashier, made a very unfriendly impression on us. You stand in the waiting area for minutes without any sympathy, just like 40 years ago, and as a paying guest, you expect at least a greeting and information about your table assignment. With service like that, we wouldn't want to visit a restaurant like that again. The restaurant at the ArtHotel Havelberg is an exemplary example of how things can be done differently.

No service, no operation….Catastrophic

First impression: nice location. Breakfast was booked for 10:30 a.m.… Shortly before 11 a.m., we were informed that the buffet was about to be cleared away. Info: It's on the website. Very unfriendly and customers left dissatisfied. And that for just under €30 per person.

Beautiful place, excellent food, very, very slow service

The worst restaurant I've ever been to. The service is terrible. We sat for 20 minutes without any attention. We didn't even get a menu, even though they kept walking past us with the menu. I can't recommend anyone go there.

Avoid. Terrible service, beyond all limits. Extremely long wait for modest dishes. Bathrooms largely unusable. The one reserved for people with disabilities is inaccessible. The wait had already started before we sat down. Useless, moreover, since the place was half empty. The maitre d' was rude and inefficient. In the end, instead of apologizing for the absurd wait, he didn't even say hello.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS: insane waiting times (the place was not at all full), incredibly inefficient service (the customer is left alone wondering when he'll be served because waiters avoid even eye contact), overpriced food. The maitre in particular is unbelievably rude behaving literally like a child. Crazy experience tbh

In the beer garden: The wait at the kiosk was very long. Staff were understaffed and disorganized. The pre-baked rolls were still raw. The fries had obviously been sitting out for a while and were cold. A complaint was not possible for the reasons stated above. A shame! It's actually a nice place. But a completely unsatisfactory situation for guests (we certainly weren't the only ones) and also for the overwhelmed staff.

Very bad: I tried to eat a currywurst and drink a beer in the beer garden. The 'wurst' was something like a boiled sausage sprinkled with tomato paste and curry, and the only draft beer available that day was warm and undrinkable. Undrinkable even when you were extremely hungry and thirsty.

We attended the Wine&Dine dinner - Alexander Dressels & Friends on June 15, 2025. The food was very good. Unfortunately, it lacked that absolute flavor kick, that special something. The wine pairing was really good. The accompanying explanations of the courses and wines were good. The service was good and attentive. The ambiance could still be improved. There were only closely spaced tables of six, and more than half of the Palmensaal was empty. It would have been more pleasant to use tables for two or four. Given the prices, this is certainly to be expected.

We had a lovely afternoon in the beer garden, with delicious beer and quick, friendly service! Everything is a bit dated, but you can tell they're making the most of the opportunities! There's still room for improvement.

I visited the snack bar next to the restaurant! The service was a disaster: unfriendly and unprofessional. The prices are exorbitant and bear no relation to the quality. The food was cold, as if it had been sitting for hours. Definitely my first and last time – absolutely not recommended.

We were very pleased with the brunch buffet on Whit Monday, and the service was also very good. We'd be happy to come back.

After our civil wedding, we had a wonderful time at the "Zur Historischen Mühle" inn. The atmosphere was warm and relaxed—exactly what we wanted for this special moment with our family and witnesses. Nice ambiance, but it was very hot inside due to the glass fronts and closed skylights, and we couldn't get a seat outside. After a fairly long wait, the menu arrived, and the subsequent wait times were also comparatively long. Coffee and cake were served separately – the coffee was almost gone by the time the cake arrived. The ice cream order was mixed up. Overall, it was also questionable why there was a 40-minute wait for coffee, cake, and two ice creams, and why you had to confront the staff beforehand about the long wait. You could also hear grumbling at the neighboring tables :-( I really remembered the restaurant "Zur Historischen Mühle" as being much better...

New restaurant opposite Sanssouci Palace. If the tourist crowds are hungry, you can walk there. Always worth a visit, but the prices are quite high.

Until now, the restaurant has always been a guarantee of excellent quality and service. After our visit today, we unfortunately discovered that with the change of management (no longer Mövenpick), this is no longer the case. The cleanliness of the restaurant, and especially the sanitary facilities, was off-putting right from the start. We noticed that tables were not immediately cleared or re-laid, which already negatively impacts the first impression. The menu has significantly reduced its content; prices have risen sharply. The service was attentive but visibly overwhelmed. The wrong food was served or with a missing side dish, cutlery was missing, no further requests were made, and we waited almost 20 minutes to pay, even though the restaurant was not full. The quality of the food (e.g., Wiener Schnitzel) was in no way up to the standards previously offered at this establishment. Salt seems to be a popular ingredient, and the side dish was on par with a motorway service station in terms of quantity and quality. The price here in no way justifies the service provided. In our opinion, a few minutes' walk into Potsdam city center is a better option...we won't be coming here again.

Normally good food at upscale prices (asparagus, schnitzel, potatoes €29.50). The service staff was understaffed for the number of seats and visitors, with about one or two waiters too few. The young team was attentive and friendly, but the finishing touches were clearly lacking, such as attentiveness to guests, including not only seeing but also responding to signals from guests that they have a request. Overall, it's improved compared to the previous operator, but there's still room for improvement. However, the incentive to do so is lacking from competitors near the palace and palace park.

It could be so beautiful, but... Unfortunately, this unique location with a beautiful beer garden is ruined by two things: 1. The service is completely overwhelmed, which is pitiful. 2. The poor value for money (simply too expensive). We've been there twice this year. The first time with food, and the second time (second chance), they didn't even manage to bring us a menu within 10 minutes, so we left. The young waiters probably aren't properly trained/trained and don't know what to do first. There are still simply too many customers for too few staff. If this doesn't change soon, the number of customers will probably decrease anyway. Based on the reviews, it wasn't just us. It's a shame that this location has deteriorated so much.

It's incredibly hot, and we've been waiting for drinks for 30 minutes. The waiters don't seem interested. I wouldn't want to visit this place again.

It was very busy, so we had to wait 45 minutes to order a drink. Then it took another 15 minutes for the drink to arrive, and another 30 minutes for the food. It was a long wait, but the food was delicious.

The restaurant has a monopoly, which affects the value for money. Prices are too high for the food. The food came without garnish, among other things. It looked "unloved." The menu is rather difficult for children. There are no children's dishes. Fish dishes are served without appropriate cutlery. The only positive thing worth mentioning are the paper towels in the restrooms.

We were in the inn's beer garden, and unfortunately, it was the same old story. We've been standing in line for over 30 minutes, and there's only one employee, even though the garden is at most a quarter full. It's not fun.

Since the change of management, we don't like going there anymore. Prices have risen sharply, portions have shrunk, and the service leaves a lot to be desired. On Saturday, at 4 p.m., we couldn't even get a coffee because a party had to be organized and all the guests had to be charged. It's sad. They're apparently no longer dependent on walk-ins. At least the beer garden is functioning.

Imagine a large, open, bright restaurant with a view of Sanssouci Palace. The reception was friendly. After a while, a waitress came by with two menus. My companion wanted to take them from her and then hand me mine; we learned that many years ago. The waitress, however, rudely informed the gentleman that the lady would get the menu first... Oh, doesn't the person serving the food hand it to her? My companion, visiting from New York, was horrified and had to laugh, but she was able to handle it humorously, because this only happens in Germany, that the staff presumes to reprimand a guest. We had plenty of time to chat; the food arrived an hour after ordering and tasted mediocre. What a shame.

Nice ambience. Unfortunately, we were NOT allowed to sit outside in this beautiful weather on April 25, 2025 (18 degrees and sun). It was very hot in the hall due to the galss fronts. The waiters made you wait for a very long time. After 10 minutes we got a card. The drinks have been a long time coming. The waiters sometimes didn't need to serve you. 4 waiters were there. Unfortunately only one of you was able to serve all the tables afterwards. All you could hear was complaining at the neighboring tables. Some of them had to wait 15 minutes for a piece of cake. By the time we had the food, my drink was already empty. Unfortunately, no one came and asked about the food or whether we wanted anything else to drink. At the end when we paid we didn't even get a thank you and have a nice day. Really very sad. The food was good, but we won't be visiting again.

The beer garden is not recommended. Overpriced and the quality isn't even good enough for a snack bar. The currywurst doesn't deserve its name here.

First of all, we were guests in the beer garden. The goal was to have a little something to eat. We assumed that a currywurst and a boulette should be an acceptable challenge for a beer garden. Unfortunately, most of both went into the bin. The boulette was a stone and the currywurst felt like a reheated, dry stick of meat with a little sauce. Unfortunately, in terms of food, I can't recommend it at all, even if the staff was friendly.

Bewertung für das Restaurant & Café „Zur historischen Mühle“ Leider war unser Besuch im „Zur historischen Mühle“ nicht so, wie wir es uns erhofft hatten. Schon beim Ankommen wurden wir von einer langen Warteschlange empfangen, in der es sich so anfühlte, als wolle man eher die Gäste abschrecken als willkommen heißen. Zwar war das Restaurant gut besucht, aber es waren noch einige Tische frei. Die Dame, die uns schließlich zu einem Tisch brachte, war immerhin freundlich… Nach dem Platznehmen blieb jedoch ein schmutziger Kaffeebecher der vorherigen Gäste auf dem Tisch stehen – ein unangenehmer Start. Auch die Speisekarten ließen lange auf sich warten. Da wir mit unseren Hunden unterwegs waren und diese in der prallen Sonne litten, entschieden wir uns den Besuch abzubrechen, ohne überhaupt etwas bestellen zu können. Schade – vielleicht ist das Essen ja gut, aber das konnten wir leider nicht herausfinden.

Terrible service! Apparently not the first time, after reading the other reviews. My friends and I wanted to enjoy the restaurant after a beautiful day at the sanssouci palace. The hostess didn’t want to seat us because apparently they were “busy” - after taking a look into the restaurant ( almost half of the restaurant was empty ) we asked again and than he laughed and took a look and seated us. Very unprofessional. Such a pity for such a beautiful place! - also during our whole stay there was no one coming into the restaurant and it remained empty. When I mentioned that at the end, one of the other workers tried to give me us crappy excuse! Also this place has an award for “Gastgeber des Jahres 2021” - but nothing in there was hospitable! Such a shame Would not recommend this place!

The restaurant wasn't full, but the service was overwhelmed and didn't bring all the drinks that were ordered. Nobody has any experience in service. The tables are also not properly cleared and clean.

The setting is very nice, right next to the castle. Average value for money, but you also pay for the location On the other hand, bad experience: 45 minutes of waiting before eating, not a word of apology or a few appetizers to keep you waiting.

Die Lokation mit Biergarten ist sehr schön in unmittelbarer Nähe zum Schloss Sanssouci. Allerdings hat uns der Service und die Geschwindigkeit sehr enttäuscht. Obwohl nicht zu viel Betrieb war haben wir auf unsere vier Getränke und zwei Stück Kuchen etwa 45 Minuten gewartet und zudem wurden Getränke & Kuchen nicht zum gleichen Zeitpunkt geliefert. Leider eine enttäuschende Erfahrung, Lage und Service passen nicht zusammen.

Leider dauert die Bedienung sehr lange,und viele Getränke wurden erst garnicht gebracht. Besser meiden sie das Restaurant.

It was a beautiful place. The food was okay. The wait is an hour and the service isn't great. It's not really worth it.

We were happy with this place so far, but unfortunately we were not happy this time. The food was tasteless, we had to ask for napkins. The wine we ordered was a bottle, however we were given two glasses. When we told the waiter about this, instead of apologizing, he just said, “Can these two glasses stay?” he replied. it was a bad meal.

No order was taken for 30 minutes, so we left the restaurant. Other guests felt the same way and left too. The service does not systematically go to each table, so the tables furthest away were never served.

The espresso we had ordered several times finally arrived at the table lukewarm, and we finally paid at the checkout, even though it was normal business that day. Unfortunately, we were a little disappointed because the food was good and the atmosphere was very nice.

Location was great, unfortunately it wasn't right even though the store was half full. I haven't seen such bad service in a long time, orders take from 45 minutes, if at all... It was a team without a boss and you had the feeling... I wish I had more performance at a location like that, beauty isn't everything

Unfortunately the second visit was only worth one star. The food was still good, but the service was an absolute disaster. We waited almost 2 hours for our food, the drinks we ordered were not brought or were only brought after the third request. The table wasn't cleared at all...you had the feeling it was just trainees and temporary workers with no experience in the service. Too bad. We won't be coming back!

I once had breakfast there. That was great. Now only lunch is offered. I found it very expensive and unfortunately not tasty enough. I'm sorry

Service awareness seems to be lacking. Long wait times when restaurant wasn't half full. Waited a lot at entrance, and another 40 minutes at the table to realize waitress didn't even sent the order. Then asked for some bread in meantime because we were starving that obviously didn't arrive. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

That was nothing at all... you have to wait to be taken to your seat but the waiter leaves first! Then you just point to the table you should go to, and when asked, “well the clean one” is obviously true! :) after 10 minutes of waiting we still weren't allowed to order anything... then we left.

Eating like grandma’s – really tasty and hearty. It's just a shame that the waitress completely mixed up our order, even though we even explained it again. Maybe her mind was still in the kitchen with the sauerkraut.

No, if you have to wait 2 hours for your food, despite the menu being minimized (due to a reservation), then that's a shame, if the food wasn't really tasty either, but was oversalted or not seasoned at all... The list is long, 3/4 hours for a coal...

you go in and wait and wait, then you ask for a menu, then you wait and wait, then you ask for an order and wait, then you wait for food and wait and then you walk out hungry, buy a robot waiter because a live one is stupid

I honestly do not recommend. We ordered fish for a child - we received old and smelly fish. The manager who came insisted that we were wrong - the child could have been poisoned. Horrible! No good approach to customers. In addition, we waited for a waiter for almost 20 minutes - we had to ask for a menu ourselves, then we waited 40 minutes for someone to come and we could place an order - I also had to go myself and ask for someone to come to us. We waited another 35 minutes for the food - it arrived spoiled and smelly. Please be careful!
