Super cozy place, great food and fit for vegans

We had a delicious meal. The atmosphere was good and the food was good.

I was able to give my partner a great pleasure and surprise by choosing this restaurant. It's something different than the other Indian restaurants

Indian restaurant near the neighborhood. The restaurant offers classic Indian cuisine that is not fancy. The DOSAs, which are wafer-thin crepe-like flat cakes, are recommended and are available in few other Indian restaurants. So if you go to Mahadosa, definitely order a DOSA. Service is super friendly and fast, you can't complain about that.

A much wider than usual choice of vegetarian dishes, including multiple options for dosa and uttapam, and of course chicken curry. Also option to order a banana lassi is a rarity. Relatively large portions for the money, especially on lunch menu. Good choice.

The two of us ate in this restaurant and unfortunately we didn't like the starter at all. Individual parts were simply fried, and the sauce wasn't particularly special either. I've had much better food in other restaurants. The main course was really great! You can follow the restaurant's recommendations accordingly!

Disappointing Diwali Event at MahaDosa Hamburg We attended a private Diwali event at MahaDosa Hamburg, where we paid €30 per person, and I was extremely disappointed. For the price, the event was poorly organized. The service was slow, and despite the small guest list of just 30 people, food was served late and in small portions. There was no clear communication from the staff, and the overall flow of the event felt disjointed. The venue itself was cramped, making it uncomfortable for everyone. For the amount we paid, I expected a much more polished and enjoyable experience. Unfortunately, it did not meet any of those expectations. I hope they take feedback seriously and improve future events.

We had organised our diwali event this year and had a terrible experience. After weeks of coordination and confirmation over email we were promised a dedicated space for 25 guests and some kids. However on the eve of the occasion the staff at the restaurant had not made any arrangements and denied to give us a private space. They seated us amongst other customers like regular reservations. However after intense resistance and altercation we were given a private space but the staff refused to help us even organise the tables and make room for the event. We did everything ourselves. We were told that they don't apparently accept such party reservations on weekends and accused us of misrepresentation. Later, over email, we were also accused of lying about the headcount. We had an atrocious experience and would strongly recommend everyone else against organising any such event at their premises.

An authentic South Indian restaurant. We ordered the idli-meduvada combination, dosa and uttapam and were completely satisfied. For dessert we had Gulab Jamun which melts in your mouth immediately. I would definitely recommend the restaurant, including to other vegans.

The dosa is offered in different variations and each one is freshly prepared, served with chutneys, is to die for. I'm in love with dosa, so all the other dishes don't stand a chance with me 😉😀

Dosa is very good, taste is also nice. Only cash accepted. And even after so extravagant costs of Hamburg - Sambhar is extra for dosa. Unheard of such practices

I was at your place last night and you gave me a bill for 18.50. Could you please send me the invoice? I didn't understand why 18.50 euros?! The meal was 12.50. Was mango lassi really 6.50 euros?!! But I think the price was cheaper in the menu. I am not satisfied and will not contact you again.

Supposedly the 1st Dosa joint in Hamburg (owners run Maharaja and Maharani) recently opened. Good on decor. So so on good. And, expensive by Hamburg standards. Not sure how long it will last

Excellent rava onion masala dosa, rasam soup

We had a wonderful experience at Mahadosa yesterday! We were the first to arrive and were warmly greeted by the server, who invited us to choose our table. The restaurant has a cozy, homey feel with charming old furniture that reminded us of a welcoming living room. We ordered dosa, wada, and uthappam, and all the dishes were excellent. The flavors were authentic, and we truly enjoyed our lunch. Thank you for a delightful meal—we'll definitely be back!

Food and atmosphere was really good. Dosa is as good as you get in India but not the chutneys though.

One of the best South Indian restaurants I have ever been at. And we lived in south India for few years. Very authentic and delicious Dosa.

We have eaten here several times and so far we have been very satisfied. Yesterday we and friends were asked whether we wanted papadum as a starter. On the bill there were 4 x papadams for 2 euros each, which corresponds to an additional starter. Unfortunately the price is grossly exorbitant. The cuisine overall seems to have declined.

As always, a great and atmospheric visit. We ate the best Madras of both our lives and can only recommend Mahadosa. Oh no, I'd rather not, otherwise we won't get any space next time! ;)

Like at mom's house MAHADOSA offers authentic SOUTH Indian (TAMILIC) cuisine that tastes like mom's. Dosa is perfect and the idly is freshly baked. PAROTTA impresses with homemade specialties. The friendly service completes the experience. A must for lovers of SOUTH Indian (Tamil) cuisine! We went there spontaneously and had to go again during our stay in Hamburg.

Very tasty dosas, if you order spicy it comes spicy. Although Indian hot could be a little hotter. We had great service, the food came quickly and everything was very tasty.

The food is really delicious. A lot of vegetarian and a lot of vegan. Only the service was problematic. Forgot about us several times. When paying separately, I covered the starters for everyone. But someone still had to pay €5 for the sauces for the starters. Unfortunately we got hit twice here. When I asked the waiter, he just said that it would be fine.

Service was totally disappointing. Understaffed place. No plates given to eat food. You can't reach out to the staff since one or two people do everything and are always in a hurry. Unresponsive staff and bad hospitality. Coming to the food: 1) Rava dosa was like basic rice flour dosa. Not at all like Rava dosa. 2) Uttapam was hard and definitely not like Uttapam 3) Parotta and Veg Kurma was good. Please donot try south indian food here. I don't think they do justice to the taste and texture.

Allow me to highly recommend this fantastic restaurant, my experience here was amazing from start to finish ,the service was excellent and the staff were incredibly friendly and professional, the atmosphere was warm and cozy ,and the place itself was incredibly clean and well organized.

The curry was very tasty and the inside of the shop was unbeatable. Lots of comfortable seating areas, we'd love to come back.

We tried the south Indian dishes and they were all good. The onion coconut uthappam was the best of the lot. It was way better than what you'd get in the Sarvana Bhavan near the main station. The space inside the restaurant might be an issue though. Highly recommended 👍

Food was cold and not tasty as before. Moreover rasmalai was not available but anyways that’s not a big thing. Mainly they informed us while paying that card machine is not working only cash is accepted. We didn’t had any cash and had to run here and there to ATM’s in rain. Would be better if they have informed us this before we have ordered something.

Had a reservation, unfortunately no table was set up. Starter variation very good and main course perfect. Gladly again.

I like the ambiance and a nice place to go on a date but i really dislike how expensive it is, 80€ for just a few things. Extremely overpriced. Dosa was good though, South Indian food is good but North Indian food is a big fail. Kerala paratha, dosa are good but chicken 65 and chicken curries were just average but extremely overpriced

The potato bonda, vada and dosa were actually good but the sauces complementing it were really bad, inauthentic and coloured. The filter coffee was abysmal, please avoid that at all costs. The prices are not justified for portion sizes. I wish Indian restaurants would stop overcharging for food.

It was an amazing Indian food experience that went far beyond curries. Every dish was perfectly prepared and the service was not only super friendly but also very informative. The carrot dessert was an absolute delight! We will definitely come back :)

Such a good food, great menu and super friendly service

We ordered dosa and chicken 65 and to be honest, it was quite disappointing, specially the taste of sambar. And, just too much oil in everything.

The restaurant offers a nice living room atmosphere, but it's not easy to sit in an armchair while eating. The food was super tasty and a little different than what I know from other Indian restaurants. I had Kathal Masala with “tree meat”. What I don't know is that you even have to pay extra for the rice. I had a coconut water drink, but they didn't ask for 0.2 or 0.4 l, a large glass was served. The toilet doors are very special, you shouldn't be too wide, then I don't think you can get in and out. If I'm back in Hamburg, I'd still like to come back.

A big no if you wish to taste the real Indian Dosa. I ordered Paneer masala Dosa. The paneer was smelly. And taste was no where near to an authentic Indian Dosa.

I have been a regular customer at this restaurant and have always enjoyed their food and service. That's why I had given them a 5-star rating previously. However, my recent visit was quite disappointing. Although the food was still excellent, the service we received from our server was unacceptable. He lacked basic customer service skills and his manner of speaking was quite off-putting. Moreover, there was a significant oversight regarding payment methods. Normally, we pay by card, but we were only informed at the time of billing that the restaurant was accepting cash only that day. When we asked the server why he hadn't mentioned this earlier, he blamed us rudely, saying it was our fault for not inquiring about payment options upfront. Fortunately, we had enough cash to pay the bill, but the experience left a bad taste in our mouths. Due to the poor handling of the situation and the server's unprofessional attitude, I feel compelled to give the restaurant a 1-star rating. This level of service is not what we have come to expect from this establishment.

Apparently telling the waiter that you’re vegan means your left as a laughing stock. Before ordering we’d mentioned we’re vegan. After ordering the food we then ordered some chai - we asked what alternate milks they had - they said they had all options; so I asked for milk - he came back to me and said they didn’t have oat but have soya/coconut. After everything was ordered I hear him without shame telling the other waiting staff about how we were fussing over the food being vegan (in a vegan friendly restaurant?). He was loud and completely disrespectful. After making obvious eye contact that I understand what you’re saying, he got the other staff to serve us. How ridiculous? Service was 0/10. Food + chai was delicious.

Had a delicious meal at Mahadosa in Hamburg, starting with flavorful idly and onion uttappam. The mango lassi was refreshing and all dishes were tasty. Worth trying! *I thought the papad was complementary, but you need to pay for it.

Update April 2024 Fantastic as ever. Recommend the arvi palak. -- It was my first time here and I must say it was a really enjoyable experience. I loved the taste and I am pleased to have finally found a restaurant which hase Malaber (or Kerela) paratha. Oh how I have missed that. The fish curry and the rawa masala dosa were both fantastic. A special shout out to Amit for his excellent service.

We were very disappointed with the restaurant. We expected more for the relatively high price. We also didn't think it was fair that the old prices were apparently still posted outside and the prices on the menu were higher. We ordered the starter platter for 29 euros, but it didn't cost the 29 euros shown on the menu, but 37 euros, because with bread it meant that everyone got a boring, unseasoned papadum (without aniseed) for 2 euros each . Despite the high prices, every little thing really cost extra. The appetizer platter itself was just a bunch of fried vegetables that all tasted pretty much the same and bland. Next to it are four chutneys. It wasn't well presented at all and there was just a lack of variety. The record was sold as a bit of everything. The main courses tasted okay, but for the price they weren't plentiful or anything special. The rice with it was boring rice without any spices, so the taste only came from the actual dish. I had ordered hot sauce with my dish, but this was forgotten and I had to ask again so that it was brought to me. We were the only guests in the restaurant, so I definitely would have liked the food to be better presented. Unfortunately, Mahadosa cannot compete with Badschah's food, where you can get really authentic Indian food.

Very diverse menu with mainly vegetarian and vegan dishes. The food was really good and the price-performance ratio was definitely good. The staff was very friendly, but you had to wait longer before you could order drinks or the dessert menu again or actively ask at the counter.

A typical South Indian restaurant. It is authentic although the taste would have been better. Sambar is not how it should be. Prices are reasonable and quantity is also adequate. If you are craving idly or dosa then this place would be a redemption for you.

Well, I had a great start and a disappointing end. Start with idli and wada, which were delicious, then went on with dosa and uttapam, which were quite average. Please understand that adding oil to them doesn't enhance the taste. It simply makes it icky 😅 Last but not the least, jalebi with a spoon of rabedi, the jalebi tastes soggy from the inside, did ask the waiter that if could it be improved, he straight out said that they were fresh from this morning. I have been eating Jalebi since I was a kid,they were anything but fresh. Well, since this is the only restaurant in Hamburg that serves South Indian dishes, don't know if they would care much about thus review :(

Delicious food in a cozy atmosphere. Nice service, not too spicy.

We were here for the first time and we are very excited. The ambience is colorful and beautiful, the food is very fresh and delicious. We had dosa and fish curry, so delicious! I also had a non-alcoholic cocktail “Kochin” and a carrot halva for dessert. I'm totally thrilled and will definitely come back.

The food is excellent! The family dosa is sooo good and really fun for our kids (just make sure your table is large enough for it!). This is my favourite restaurant in Hamburg. My only wish would be for better (and just more) lighting. It's very dark.

It looks like for Indians but not meant for South Indians, who actually prefer authentic chutneys. Needs more improvement in that region. Only the service was satisfactory.

Visited this place for the first and last time on 24th February Friday evening. Food is okay, nothing breathtaking, nothing bad. Amount quite small as for those prices. Just completely average food in my opinion. Please discuss with your personel about the reasons for their salary, because forcing customers for tips by making comments, even if we are not fully done with payment yet is unacceptable - waiter was referring to where am I from and commented if that is normal that in my country we do not give tips. I am spending 80-90 euros on an evening not for someone to push on me his frustrations about their job conditions - that’s a thing to discuss with your leader, I do not discuss my income compared to restaurant prices as well once comming to your place. There is always the problem with tips by card, therefore I have always some euros in cash for that - which I am leaving after being done with payment and covering a bill. Was not possible unfortunately because I had to listen to some comments on my origins, which started while I was just reaching out to my purse for a tip cash. I tipped a waiter but I doubt that for this behaviour. Tip is volountarly, be happy if you get that and do not blame guests for your salary - we already are supporting your work place , if we feel like we sharing more, wait for that and just don’t be rude…

Not authentic Indian food. The quantity was very small and didn’t worth the price. The waiter was very rude and asked for tips. He even gave the wrong bill and asked us to pay. Not recommend at all!

I'll start at the end. Service equals 0! We pay by card, tip accordingly and are treated unkindly because you don't give it in cash. Accordingly, you are not welcome in this restaurant. This has been clearly shown to us. Since we are a family and wanted to celebrate our son's birthday and the food was supposed to be something special, we are disappointed. We can't afford this every weekend. We didn't save on anything and are still treated badly... and the food is mediocre. Every main course tasted the same and was visually very unappetizingly brown. I was in Kerala for several weeks and thank God I never ate anything like that there.

I am deeply disappointed by the experience I had at your restaurant yesterday. Not only was the service incredibly poor, with rude behavior from the biller, but the lack of communication regarding available menu items, like Lassi, was unacceptable. Discovering that a neighboring table received what we wanted only highlighted the incompetence of the staff. Furthermore, the biller's presumptuousness in adding a tip amount without consulting us is completely unprofessional. While we were open to tipping, the aggressive solicitation for a tip made it feel obligatory, rather than a gesture of appreciation for good service. Additionally, the state of the hand washing area was utterly unhygienic, raising serious concerns about the overall cleanliness and safety standards of the establishment. This experience was extremely disappointing and has left me with no desire to return or recommend your restaurant to others. Immediate improvements in service quality and hygiene are imperative for the reputation and success of your establishment.

Great vintage vibe, good tamil music playing in background and very tasty food. We went here today on Valentine's day date. It was perfect!

The food was delicious and authentic. My friend and I had reserved a table. When we arrived the restaurant was very busy and there were a few guests waiting for a table ahead of us. We were directed by the owner to a grandma sofa with a coffee table. We should wait there for a real table. The menu was handed to us and then we had to wait. A number of guests arrived and were taken to the basement. After asking several times, the overwhelmed owner said she had completely forgotten about us and that the next free table was for us. More time passed and when the next guests left I had to speak to the lady again. More than 30 minutes later we were finally seated at the table and able to order. Drinks were delivered incorrectly but, as already written, the food was good.

I wish i would have not choose Maha dosa yesterday. Please don’t fall for reviews. Been in Germany for some time now i didn’t had high expectations but this experience was not good at all! Dosa’s were not hot nor tasted well. I saw the reviews and assumed it should be better atleast. The waiters not helpful at all. Prices are super expensive for the quantity, quality they deliver. If i had a option, i would have given 0 stars.

The food was good, you can choose between different levels of spiciness. Only the service was a bit poor, because a lot of what was ordered was repeatedly forgotten throughout the evening and you had to remind yourself, but I think that's forgivable on a busy restaurant evening. The service was nice, although the waiter seemed annoyed when collecting money from a larger group and mumbled something to himself in Indian. The atmosphere was very cozy.

Very cozy & delicious food & drinks

The food tasted good and came very quickly, but three dishes only had one bowl of rice. Unequal treatment of guests (other guests were offered nightcaps, but not us). The description of dishes said "with lots of Indian vegetables" but there was very little in the sauce.

The food was okay-ish but what annoyed me was the staff indirectly asking for tips while paying. I believe the dishes are priced reasonably and the employer must be paying at least the minimum wage according to the law, then what's the need for explicitly asking for tips? Tips are meant for extraordinary service or when there is something outstanding.

Insgesamt war es noch ok. Auf die Getränke haben wir sehr lange gewartet, diese kamen erst nach der Vorspeise und leider wurde mehrfach das falsche Essen wortlos auf unserem Tisch abgestellt und erst auf wiederholte Nachfrage abgeholt und zum nächsten Tisch gebracht, vegetarisch war bestellt, gebracht wurde ein Hauptgericht mit Huhn.
