La Sepia in Hamburg

Like always, simply the best :-)

It was a long time ago that the restaurant was my insider tip... and I often brought friends here (still at the old address). Now everything looks more elegant, I think that the prices have also been adjusted to the new ambience ;-) .... But unfortunately the incredibly delicious food is no longer available.... and also in a beautiful ambience, the food is simply the most important thing! That's why this visit was my last visit, I prefer to remember the "old" La Sepia.

Recommended to visit?: No! Reason for visiting? Our hotel was just around the corner. My (subjective) takeaway of the restaurant and its crowd: It’s a pseudo seafood joint, but actually a rip-off preying on unsuspecting Germans and tourists. Were the food and drinks delicious? The bread and boquerones were decent, but the BBQ squid was an absolute joke—it was boiled and had never been near a grill. And four pieces of sepia for €24.50? Ridiculous. The cod fillet wasn’t grilled either, despite the claim “FROM GRILL” on the menu. Don’t be fooled. NONE of the seafood under. "FROM THE GRILL" gets grilled. The Grauburgunder “Becker” at €29 a bottle was no better than a €8.95 supermarket wine. Service style? Friendly, no complaints there. Price-performance ratio? Absolutely abysmal—probably the worst I’ve experienced in months. It’s a blatant money grab, with “plates” going for €45–85 per person. Atmosphere? It’s alright, as long as you don’t mind your food being reheated in a microwave. What did I like specifically? Umm... the bloke at the table next to us had a cracking jacket. Would I visit again? Only over my dead body. Comments: If my wife files for divorce because I suggested this place, I wouldn’t blame her.

A must for anyone in Hamburg or on holiday in Hamburg Very friendly service, suitable ambience - very tasty and a feast for the eyes of the finest. We've been there for the second time now, and we'll definitely come back here the next time we visit Hamburg.

I recently visited the La Sepia restaurant in Hamburg and would like to share my experience. Service: Staff were attentive and friendly, ensuring a pleasant welcome and efficient service. Ambiance: Although the room is inviting, it is already showing signs of wear and tear - the walls could use a new coat of paint, which would significantly improve the atmosphere. Food: The fish and seafood are undoubtedly the restaurant's strong point. Salmon, shrimp and other fish dishes were exceptionally fresh and authentic in taste. However, the side dishes fell short of expectations, especially for a Mediterranean cuisine. Ingredients such as marinated red cabbage, mushrooms, cauliflower and broccoli are common throughout Europe and do not reflect the richness of typical Mediterranean vegetables. It would be interesting to offer more traditional and vibrant options that truly capture the essence of this cuisine. I was disappointed with the pastéis de bacalhau as they seemed frozen and were served cut in half - this detracts from both the presentation and the taste. Price: Despite the quality of the fresh produce, the prices seemed excessive given the quantities served. From a Portuguese restaurant you would expect more generous portions that do justice to the tradition of rich cuisine. Suggestions: Investing in side dishes that better suit Mediterranean cuisine, as well as larger portions for main courses, would be great improvements. Additionally, using handmade pastéis de bacalhau instead of frozen products would enhance authenticity and taste. Overall, there are positive aspects, but also room for improvement that could significantly improve the dining experience.

Service really absolutely top! Food was good, but the beef rump was nothing special. The steak was served in herb butter. In our eyes, less would have been more. Just salt and pepper, preferably herb butter as a side. The starter - prawns in garlic oil - was good, but really too expensive for 18€ and 6 pieces. What really bothered us, however, was the placement. We were almost sitting on our neighbors' laps (see photo). Unfortunately, there is hardly any privacy when eating. That simply doesn't have to be the case, it's better to have one less table in the restaurant.

La Sepia gets my full recommendation! Very tasty food and consistently courteous and pleasantly friendly service.

Everything was right here. The lovingly run store, with a tradition of over 40 years, absolutely convinced us and picked us up. Very friendly staff, the food was excellent, the house wine was delicious and the price-performance ratio was also right. We'd love to come back.

A great restaurant without a lot of frills, typically and naturally furnished. View into the kitchen is open. Very nice service, super delicious food! Absolutely recommended!

It was our first time at “La Sepia” and we sat upstairs directly in front of the open kitchen. It's really a great atmosphere. The scallops for starters were cooked to perfection. The aioli and bread on the house were a great, tasty addition from the restaurant. The pulpo was very well fried, the whole dish very surprising. The monkfish also went perfectly with the fried vegetables. The only drawback was the shrimp, which tasted mealy. For dessert, the Cream Catalana -WOW- so airy, light, fruity! What is particularly worth mentioning is the service. The waiters really work their tails off, are very attentive, but not intrusive and, above all, not hectic. Despite the relatively small shop, it has a pleasant atmosphere, not too loud and very cozy. What you notice is that the waiters understand each other and work hand in hand. Very nice to look at! A big compliment and thank you for a wonderful evening ♥️

We sat right next to the kitchen.. a little more loving preparation would have been nicer.. Huge portion of turbot was special offer and catch of the day monkfish in Serrano ham a pinch too much salt.. Service was very attentive and friendly, thank you very much, a bit like in Lisbon Felt back in the old town

I took my wife to La Sepia for our anniversary. Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious! We’ll definitely be back!

The waiter welcomed us warmly and introduced the menu/dishes. Drinks and food came quickly and the food was delicious. A special feature here is the fish counter in the back of the restaurant, where you can see how fresh the individual products are. Rarely have I eaten such fresh, well-prepared fish for the price.

Super sweet service and very tasty food. You can even watch the chefs prepare the food fresh. Very relaxed and great atmosphere!

We had a great evening with lots of fish and seafood 🦞. The food was great and the location is also very appealing.

The food was delicious, I felt like I was on vacation. Attentive employees who did everything to make us feel comfortable. Reservation absolutely necessary. Prices are a step higher than average, but reasonable. One star deducted because the toilets are no longer nice and are not accessible for wheelchair users because you have to climb stairs. Every time I have the chance to come to Hamburg, I come here. Nowhere else in Germany can you find such delicious seafood. Here too, the staff is extremely friendly and happy to recommend dishes to try.

In my opinion, the restaurant is overpriced and does NOT invite you to linger. The wooden volumes are very uncomfortable and there are no seat cushions. The food didn't arrive for another 1.5 hours and an appetizer was forgotten. Guests continued to be accepted although there was obviously a lack of staff, both in the kitchen and in service. The waitress was very unfriendly and only wanted to respond to allergies to a limited extent. Alternatives had to be mentioned by ourselves. All shrimp, from 3 dishes, were overcooked. When we left and only gave the waitress a small tip (€4) because of the poor service and food, she argued with us. We definitely won't be coming back!

Antonio and I from Ilha da Madeira, who used to sell and want to sell to Restaurants La Sepia, went to eat there and it was very good, everything with high quality.

All dishes were delicious, fish soup was a delight! You should reserve a table a week in advance, especially on weekends.

The ambience is ok, the staff is so attentive that you almost feel like a VIP. But when it came to the food, the chef probably went for “Instagram-friendly” rather than “tastes good”. Fresh ingredients? Probably more of a myth, especially with the shrimp, squid and cuttlefish - we expected more of them. Price-performance? Let's just say: For the price I would have expected a small fireworks display, not just one on the plate. What a shame!

The food was mediocre to ok, although the portion was rather spartan. The starter soup (fish) was nothing, tasted like Bolognese and was way too sweet (tomato base). The main course was better, fillets fried to perfection, seafood too. However, the supplement was microscopic. But for €33 it's bearable. What isn't there at all is the service, which is below all cannon. There was no follow-up drink service at all, and any requests were even ignored. When we finally begged for another drink, the empty glasses were simply left standing. When the main course was finished, a waiter came over and pointed to the plates and asked, "Ready?" Excuse me, are we here in Erika's corner? Of course, dessert, a nightcap and coffee were never requested; I was now wondering how many rings of service hell we were in. Of course we had to wait over 20 minutes for the bill. Maybe that was the hidden camera and we missed the resolution.

Everything was wonderful. Food was perfect , Nicholas is so nice to us and our kids. definitely recommend to visitors :)

Es tut mir leid, aber ich kann die Euphorie der anderen Bewerter nicht teilen. Das wichtigste Kriterium in einem Restaurant sollte das Essen sein und nicht allein das Ambiente oder der Service. Ich hatte die 3 verschiedenen Fischfilets gewählt. Das waren keine Edelfische , dafür ein Esslöffel Gemüse und ein paar Drillinge. Der Preis von 27€ ist absolut nicht gerechtfertigt. Das Gemüse war versalzen und die Menge Fisch für ein Frühstück angemessen. Als ich um die Rechnung gebeten hatte, wurde ich sofort gefragt, ob ich das Trinkgeld über die Kartenzahlung tätigen möchte, oder in Bar. Das habe ich bisher noch nie erlebt, dass ich zur Zahlung eines Trinkgeldes aufgefordert wurde. Es gibt in Hamburg weitaus bessere Restaurants.

The food is great, but you should do a lot with the ambience. Tables and chairs should be replaced. If I hadn't known about the quality of the food, I would have kept walking.

Nothing to do with a Portuguese cuisine restaurant: incomprehensible menu, scant portions, tasteless, bland food, without any character. Wine list with battle wines, the Super Bock is saved. Service exceeded. Very badly.

Mussels in the tomato stock were okay, the stock was quite tasty but the mussels were small... clams in the pan were also very small and the portion was just big enough to fill the bottom of the pan, with gaps in between. Boquerones as a starter for €14, very small portion, and while we were still finishing the starter the main courses arrived - therefore a rough deduction for the service, but otherwise the waiters were nice. I inspected the fish display after I went to the toilet. I think I may be a bit too critical after a few years of working at the most famous fish manufacturer in Germany... but according to my standards, what I saw was a 4 to 5 according to school grades There was no trace of freshness, the freshest I saw were the thawed shrimp and calamari. If you want to eat seafood in HH, you should consider an alternative to 'La Sepia'.

Food tastes good, side dishes with the fish are a bit limited for this price. Service could be more responsive to the guests and not take everything in as they run past, hardly any eye contact when serving, even though the restaurant was only about half full.

High quality food and very nice staff. What really spoils the appetite, however, is the terrible husbandry of lobsters, crabs and other shellfish. Dirty, small containers with far too many animals. I wouldn't have expected that in a restaurant in this price range. Such conditions should actually be made public

Very family-like. After seeing a musical, we ate at 10:15 p.m. and toasted a family member's birthday at midnight. The food was very tasty, the service was very nice. Everything was perfect. Many thanks to the La Sepia team. We'll be back.

Some bad experience there, the waiter was not too polite, using bad words not too myself but expressing himself like that. In my opinion too expensive for the quantity of food, I expend 35€ and I was still hungry...

**La Sepia, Hamburg – Lack of understanding for serious health needs** We visited La Sepia as a group and unfortunately we were quite disappointed. Although the restaurant has an average rating of 4 stars, we cannot confirm this experience. We were pushed to a table in the corner, which didn't seem particularly hospitable. The service was unreasonable, especially when dealing with the gluten-free diet of a child in our group. It should be made clear that celiac disease is not a voluntary dietary choice, but a serious condition that requires a strict diet - especially for children. Unfortunately, the service showed little understanding. Instead of simply providing a gluten-free option, it was repeatedly emphasized that the food would then look “not like on the menu” and “not nice”. Only when one of us made it clear did the waitress's attitude change. The food itself was okay, but nothing special. It was hard to enjoy the quality of food after struggling so much to get a child's basic needs met. It is disappointing that in a restaurant that works with food there is so little knowledge about serious allergies and the like. is present. In other cases, such as a nut allergy, careful attention is also paid to this - the same should be the case with gluten. Overall a disappointing visit and we can't understand where the good reviews are coming from.

Came with my family and we had a great time. Food overall was pretty good, fish is fresh and cooked nicely. It’s nothing crazy it’s just good and it doesn’t take long to come out after ordering. The Portions aren’t big but great for sharing if you order multiple items. The lady is a super friendly waiter but the service isn’t quick to serve so don’t expect to be in and out. However the atmosphere is very nice. This is the type of restaurant you would not mind sitting in for an extended period of time. Especially in the summer. All in all a nice visit, will be back to try out the rest of their extensive menu.

Llegamos a este restaurante sintiéndonos muy calientes y cansados, e insatisfechos con nuestro hotel cerca, pero nuestra experiencia en el restaurante en La Sepia fue maravillosa y nos hizo sentir felices de nuevo. Nuestro servidor era fantástico. Ella realmente entendía a la gente y cómo hacer que se sintieran bien cuidados. Ella era probablemente lo MEJOR de este restaurante - pero la comida y la bebida eran casi igualmente buenos. Nuestra elección de vino vinho verde vino como 0. 5 o 1 litro - obviamente fuimos por el litro. Se adaptó perfectamente a nuestras sopas de pescado y pastas de gambas y tenía una excelente relación calidad-precio. Sin duda recomendaría este restaurante a todo el mundo 🥰

A reservation is highly recommended. Primarily it's all about fish and seafood, but the sirloin steak is also highly recommended.

The restaurant is very busy. The food is prepared and served very quickly. The prices are very arrogant, the drinks are served in the same format regardless of whether it's beer, wine or seltzer. The seltzer, which is not allowed in restaurants, is served in the house's own bottles. The fish is grilled to perfection and the vegetables are the same almost everywhere. The restaurant has 4.5 stars. I would rate it at 3 stars.

Went here just to have a drink. The terrace is nice, you can sit away from the hustle and bustle and the white sangria was super tasty. Food looked good too, but we didn't try it because we were very late. Staff was nice and quick...

The food is ok but the service is the worst. As many one star reviews said the service here is really bad. Won’t recommend here at all….. We have 6 people and we ordered 1L sangria and Alster Wasser. Because we are not sure will we like the sangria or not. So we want to try it first. However, the female waitress is very rude and telling us that we order too less drinks. she immediately takes away our drink menu. When we ordering food, the waitress yelling at my friend and ask my friend to speak English to her. (my friend was just checking our order with me)

You have to experience it! If you love fish and good food, this is the place for you! There were 8 of us there and luckily we had reserved. My expectations were more than exceeded. Absolutely authentic Portuguese, maritime cuisine

Very nice open restaurant placed in the Schanzenviertel in Hamburg. Staff is very attentive and friendly. The food has always been fresh and delicious. If you like good fish dishes (grilled) - this is the place.

The service was extremely friendly and attentive, and the food tasted good. However, the portion size was disappointing in relation to the high price. The dish for €34 consisted of three 50 gram pieces of fillet, a shrimp, a small piece of squid, two tiny potatoes and some vegetables. Overall I found it to be very expensive.

It was very disappointing that their reservation system is broken. The food however was excellent. We had to wait 15 minutes before we were seated. The menu written with chalk on a blackboard was difficult to read, the had however a online version as well. It would have been nice to have a traditional menu with pictures. Nevertheless, we were able to order our food and drinks, and enjoyed everything very much.

Great Portuguese restaurant in the middle of the ski jump. Super tasty fish dishes and great cocktails. Very friendly and fast service, good value for money. We will definitely come here again.

A really recommendable restaurant, we really wanted to eat fish and we were at the right place here. We are often in Hamburg and this restaurant is definitely visited more often now.

I went with high expectations but it did not meet my expectations. Even though I wanted a grilled mixed plate, it was greasy and tasteless, like fried food. The prices were also very high. I've seen better ones.

Wir haben in diesem recht typisch aufgebauten Restaurant wunderbar gegessen. Man kann sehr gut draußen sitzen, aber auch die Tische im Haus sind durch die große geöffnete Front fast wie draußen. Die Bedienung war aufmerksam und sehr nett. Preise sind der Qualität der Gerichte entsprechend. Der Hauswein war hervorragend. Das Restaurant ist absolut empfehlenswert. Einen Stern Abzug gibt es wegen der Lage. Eine ziemlich laute Straße führt vor dem Restaurant vorbei.

Busy place. We waited for half an hour for an outside table only to be shown an indoors. We were shown a chalk board menu offering mostly fish dishes. Meat dishes were on the other side but we were not shown them. The Cataplana and Aroz Marisco both had a too-similar tomato based broth, which is boring if you like to share. The main difference between them was rice and clams in one, some vegetables in the other. Good wine by the glass, carafe or bottle. Excellent garlic butter and good bread as well as a tomato tartar (very tasty but one dimensional in texture) and a fish soup to start. We did not have desert.

Das Ambiente ist modern, es gibt auch einen Aussenbereich. Grundsätzlich sind die Gerichte schmackhaft. Leider war unser Fisch "totgebraten".
