Kaiyo - Japanese Restaurant in Hamburg

The chef's choice and a premium sake are what we truly enjoy, topped off by excellent service, when we want to treat ourselves to something special. Guests are treated with great care, and everything, combined with the ambiance, makes for a pleasant evening for us. We don't come to Kaiyo often, but we always enjoy it. Advance reservations are recommended.

Great food, very friendly service, great atmosphere.

The food was delicious. Unfortunately, we didn't get any napkins. The teapot was extremely small. I suspect it was 150 ml. The mochi was frozen.

Ramen were ok. Tasted like an european-localized version, this could be a good place to begin with, if you’re not familiar with Japanese food. Misinformation in menu - Kimchi is Korean, not Chinese.

The food was sensational! Simply an explosion of flavors! The prices were perfectly reasonable, the portions were large, the staff was friendly, and the atmosphere was great. It's within walking distance of the town hall.

We went there for dinner one weekday evening. There was a huge selection of Japanese food. The service was very attentive. The food we had was delicious, and the proximity to the town hall makes it even more attractive. You can even sit outside in the summer. It's just a traffic-calmed, single-lane road that runs past, making it very quiet outside.

The only things that my friend and I was surprised (negatively) is the matcha soju, it sound so fancy until it is serve with wine glass and it taste so so sweet without any alcohol taste and it was cold. Sorry it is because i am not translated fully the menu and did not ask properly 😅 However, I always like the wide variety of food options they have. They have the finest salmon belly and different type of standard Japanese food eg ramen curry rice, sashimi. And I especially like the way they use their time to make the food presentable and with many tiny attention. I like to recommend their place to small business dinner as well, so people taste something different fancy yet affordable price. One thing I hope they could improve is having English menu or more photo for people who are not familiar with Japanese cuisine name.

Nice service and good food. Big portion of Ramen. Very beautiful restaurant. Cost seats. We booked a table but they have a lot of seats during the week. Could try it spontaneously. Will return and try other dishes. Quick service !

- Far from authentic Japanese food, operated by Chinese/Vietnamese - Food was not great. Pork cutlet was overcooked and tough - Maki rice was not suitable sushi rice - Place had a funny smell - charged 3 Euro for the glass of still water - misrepresentation of some dish. I.e. Kimchi is not Chinese cabbage.

I highly recommend the lunch menu. A great selection at reasonable prices. The service is attentive but unobtrusive. On my last visit, there was a somewhat unpleasant smell when I walked in, so I deducted one star for the ambiance. Overall, though, I really enjoy coming to Kaiyo.

On the recommendation of the hotel, we had dinner at Kaiyo: a wonderful culinary experience, certainly one of the two or three best Japanese restaurants we visited in Europe! Charming and efficient service. We will come back to this before leaving Hamburg.

Nice ambience, creative combination of European and Japanese cuisine. Warm towels in advance were a nice gesture. The food was good, only the tonkatsu was a bit dry and the entrecote had a thick tendon. Given the prices, that shouldn't happen. Miso soup and Japanese curry without coconut milk would be nice.

The atmosphere is very nice, the food came quickly and was adequately prepared as far as the meat and fish were concerned. Unfortunately not authentic Japanese cuisine, sauces tasted like instant fried sauce, especially the teriyaki sauce is not recommended. The cola was no longer carbonated and tasted watered down. It's a shame, we were a bit disappointed with the quality of the food.

A great restaurant with a very good menu in “historic” premises. All the dishes we ordered were “over the top”. We would love to come back.

Wonderful location. Lots of choice, something for everyone. I can highly recommend the homemade jasmine iced tea. We ordered ramen, it came very quickly and was extremely tasty. Would love to come back.

The taste is just mediocre - no special aroma. However, the ambience is very nice. Unfortunately, in the end the waitress became quite pushy as soon as you didn't want to order another drink - it felt like: "Then please pay if you don't want anything more." You can easily get a table without a reservation.

Were eating Japanese for the first time. That's why we got a little advice. The nice lady explained to us very patiently what was what and recommended one or two things to eat. We had ramen and salmon, and before that, sushi and duck. Everything was very tasty. Thank you very much, we will definitely come back when we are back in town.

We had an excellent meal at this restaurant. The menu offers options for all tastes, and the service was kind and efficient. Families with small children aren’t always warmly welcomed at restaurants, but here we felt truly welcomed. We ordered ramen, tonkatsu, and sushi – all of them were excellent! The price was ok for japonese food. I would definitely come back more often. They really deserve 5 stars here in the reviews.

The best spontaneous visit of the year so far. Super consistent! Good food, good service and very welcoming. We were impressed by the friendly, glowing cat in the window of the guest room, which is cellar-like so that you can perfectly observe the feet of the walkers 😉😁 All joking aside, we would love to come back. As tourists on Saturday evening without a reservation, we tried our luck but had no chance of getting a table. There was hardly anything going on on Sunday evening! The atmosphere was really great and the staff were very friendly and attentive. The price is a bit more expensive but definitely justified - the sushi tasted very good!

The food was really good, the atmosphere was very pleasant and cozy. However, the Salted Ice Coffee was overly salty and therefore completely undrinkable.

Delicious food, but in the higher price segment. Were there around 4:30 p.m. without a reservation on a Tuesday. Everything is empty, so no reservation necessary. Probably more in the evening. We ordered 2 main courses and 2 desserts and with 4 drinks it cost over 80 euros. But very nice atmosphere, friendly service and food was very tasty. To go out sometimes, yes, but not for in between

Food was good, but if you expect a typical Japanese restaurant you might be disappointed. Especially with ramen. It's more of a colorful mix of Asian flavors, with a focus on Japan. Apart from that everything is tip top!

What a lovingly run restaurant...

Unfortunately, we were deceived by the positive blog reviews. At first we were greeted rudely at the door and told that we would have to vacate our table in 1.5 hours - even though we had a reservation. The starters came quite quickly but were just OK and not authentically Japanese. The water bottle was incredibly dirty and really disgusting. We ordered the Black Cod for the main course. The fish was well prepared, although a little underseasoned. There was supposedly authentic Japanese rice, which turned out to be bland jasmine rice without any seasoning. After forty minutes we had enough and left the restaurant as it was anything but cozy or inviting. The dead orchid in the window and the two empty flower pots didn't exactly create a pleasant atmosphere. Too bad! Far too expensive for what is offered!

Very stylish restaurant. We spontaneously went on a Saturday at 4:30 p.m. and got a place even without a reservation. We found the rooms exceptional. The food was very good and arrived very quickly after ordering. The portion of teriyaki chicken could have been a little larger and our ramen was excellent!

The restaurant has a special charm because it is located in a historic building in Hamburg's old town. The atmosphere is simply special! The food tastes very good - the menu is varied and offers something for every taste: from fish to meat to delicious vegan dishes. The service is also very good. The staff is friendly, attentive and makes you feel comfortable. Here you can enjoy both a relaxed lunch and dinner with friends or business partners/customers. For smaller groups there is a separate room that can accommodate around 8 people. A great place for any occasion – definitely worth a visit!

Very tasty Japanese. The frames could have been sharper, but we only noticed afterwards. I would say that next time. The food was very tasty, I would especially recommend the flamed salmon sushi to everyone. Everything was very tasty but also a little more expensive but it is also right in the city center. I would and will go again.

Ambience good Smells like a drain in the basement All Vietnamese, unfriendly and no idea about traditional cuisine... Tricking tourists with fantasy prices. Ramen noodles from the wholesale market (bag noodles)….. Snacks completely overpriced…. miso ramen is a water soup with 2!!!! Piece of meat… oops more fat…. Espresso with ice, the ice is thrown into a glass… for 6 euros….. It's crazy and the younger ones go there to eat... Guys... they're all Vietnamese in the store, they've never been near Japan before

I enjoyed the ramen. Not at all with my Japanese companion. Unfortunately the prices are very expensive (excessive, e.g. €7 for 3 gyoza). And it is very narrow and when we were there very loud from other guests. Unfortunately I wouldn't come back if it stays like this.

The soups are really worth discovering!

We had lunch at Kaiyo today and it was absolutely awesome! We had the Katsu Miso & Vegan Ramen, perfect spiciness and an incredibly delicious broth, by far the best in all of Hamburg and can definitely keep up with my Japanese experiences. The drinks are also very tasty and the atmosphere is appealing!

The food tasted very good. I had the mango curry with chicken. One of the best I've ever eaten. The gyoza starters were also very tasty. The food took a little longer because it only has 4 stars. The optics are also fine. However, the menus are already getting old.

Great shop! Pretty authentic Japanese food in an incredibly great feel-good interior design. From gyoza, shrimp tempura to ramen with chicken katsu (schnitzel) or grilled duck breast, everything was incredibly delicious, and the cocktails with a Spanish twist are awesome! I'm already looking forward to the next time :)

Very special, pretty atmosphere. Due to the many small rooms you have the opportunity to choose between different ambiences. A small disadvantage is that the tables are very close to each other. The food was good and the menu is varied. The employees are very nice. We will come back and try the menu again.

A great, special Japanese, you can tell that straight away when you walk into the restaurant. The restaurant is located in the basement and exudes exclusivity and elegance thanks to individual compartments and a relatively dark atmosphere. Because the restaurant is relatively large, you can make a reservation the same evening and get a seat. The food was exceptionally tasty and came quickly, but is therefore a little more expensive. So it's worth it if you have a special occasion and want to have an evening. There is also a wide range for vegans and vegetarians. I look forward to the next visit.

The small winding Japanese restaurant is very lovingly decorated. Unfortunately, despite a reservation, we had to wait more than half an hour. Which was a bit of a shame. The restaurant was very well stocked. But still, the food was very quickly at the table after the order. Also special requests (a dish from the lunch menu ordered in the evening) are totally uncomplicated when ordering. The initial long wait was still very worthwhile. Because it was a successful dinner due to the service of the staff.

The sushi was absolutely fantastic! The freshness of the ingredients was at the highest level, and the rice was cooked perfectly - slightly sticky but not too mushy. Particularly noteworthy were the special sushis, which were refined with a variety of creative toppings and sauces. The selection of fresh fish, from tuna to salmon to less common varieties like hamachi, was impressive. The quality of the food definitely justifies the high price. The service was exceptional. The staff was friendly, attentive and well trained. The team took the time to respond to special requests without seeming intrusive. The dishes were served quickly and the service was always present. An absolute must for sushi lovers looking for a high quality experience. Highly recommended!

From the get go our male waiter was quite pretentious. My friend spoke German and he also spoke English. We ordered our food, I didn't eat much of my food and asked for takeaway. He said okay but wasn't paying any attention. I told my friend that is not gonna to pack my food. And as he brought our dessert I asked him about my takeaway and he shrugged his shoulders and said oh my colleague threw it to the bin. No apologies no refund no deduction on the bill nothing. He even sent another waiter with our bill. Very disappointed.

The entrance smelled of sewage… The food (and place) was not actual japanese, and the sushi was not good. I can’t recommend this place

We were able to find a place for 3 people on Saturday afternoon without a reservation. However, we sat at a table in a room that obviously serves as a hot spot for service. All menu cards, cutlery and napkins were positioned there. That spoiled the atmosphere a bit. The food was excellent. I couldn't understand the high prices for tea. A jug the size of a cup is rare. The support with menu selection could have been a little more detailed. We waited a relatively long time when we finished eating until someone came and we could ask for further service. All in all okay, but not really convincing.

An apartment converted into a restaurant. Staff very friendly. Food came quickly and was beautifully prepared. Portion large and sufficient.
