Kaiyo - Japanese Restaurant in Hamburg

Very tasty Japanese. The frames could have been sharper, but we only noticed afterwards. I would say that next time. The food was very tasty, I would especially recommend the flamed salmon sushi to everyone. Everything was very tasty but also a little more expensive but it is also right in the city center. I would and will go again.

Ambience good Smells like a drain in the basement All Vietnamese, unfriendly and no idea about traditional cuisine... Tricking tourists with fantasy prices. Ramen noodles from the wholesale market (bag noodles)….. Snacks completely overpriced…. miso ramen is a water soup with 2!!!! Piece of meat… oops more fat…. Espresso with ice, the ice is thrown into a glass… for 6 euros….. It's crazy and the younger ones go there to eat... Guys... they're all Vietnamese in the store, they've never been near Japan before

I enjoyed the ramen. Not at all with my Japanese companion. Unfortunately the prices are very expensive (excessive, e.g. €7 for 3 gyoza). And it is very narrow and when we were there very loud from other guests. Unfortunately I wouldn't come back if it stays like this.

We had lunch at Kaiyo today and it was absolutely awesome! We had the Katsu Miso & Vegan Ramen, perfect spiciness and an incredibly delicious broth, by far the best in all of Hamburg and can definitely keep up with my Japanese experiences. The drinks are also very tasty and the atmosphere is appealing!

It was thick, tasty, and very satisfying for the price. While it wasn’t as crispy as it could be and slightly moist, these are minor details of me being picky since I am comparing with the best ones in Japan. The tonkatsu sauce with sesame and the crispy lettuce salad with a great dressing tied everything together amazingly. Although the restaurant might not be authentically Japanese in terms of the chef and staff, the execution was outstanding regardless. The food tasted very good. I had the mango curry with chicken. One of the best I've ever eaten. The gyoza starters were also very tasty. The food took a little longer because it only has 4 stars. The optics are also fine. However, the menus are already getting old.

Great shop! Pretty authentic Japanese food in an incredibly great feel-good interior design. From gyoza, shrimp tempura to ramen with chicken katsu (schnitzel) or grilled duck breast, everything was incredibly delicious, and the cocktails with a Spanish twist are awesome! I'm already looking forward to the next time :)

Very special, pretty atmosphere. Due to the many small rooms you have the opportunity to choose between different ambiences. A small disadvantage is that the tables are very close to each other. The food was good and the menu is varied. The employees are very nice. We will come back and try the menu again.

A great, special Japanese, you can tell that straight away when you walk into the restaurant. The restaurant is located in the basement and exudes exclusivity and elegance thanks to individual compartments and a relatively dark atmosphere. Because the restaurant is relatively large, you can make a reservation the same evening and get a seat. The food was exceptionally tasty and came quickly, but is therefore a little more expensive. So it's worth it if you have a special occasion and want to have an evening. There is also a wide range for vegans and vegetarians. I look forward to the next visit.

The two of us went to this restaurant for Christmas. We got a place without a reservation. The food was very tasty and the portion was quite good. The prices for such a portion are reasonable. The staff was very friendly and the food was ready very quickly.

The interior of the restaurant is very attractive. We had the Duck Breast Ramen and Flamed Salmon Sushi first. Both tasted good, but not exceptional. Our highlight were the two cocktails.

The small winding Japanese restaurant is very lovingly decorated. Unfortunately, despite a reservation, we had to wait more than half an hour. Which was a bit of a shame. The restaurant was very well stocked. But still, the food was very quickly at the table after the order. Also special requests (a dish from the lunch menu ordered in the evening) are totally uncomplicated when ordering. The initial long wait was still very worthwhile. Because it was a successful dinner due to the service of the staff.

The sushi was absolutely fantastic! The freshness of the ingredients was at the highest level, and the rice was cooked perfectly - slightly sticky but not too mushy. Particularly noteworthy were the special sushis, which were refined with a variety of creative toppings and sauces. The selection of fresh fish, from tuna to salmon to less common varieties like hamachi, was impressive. The quality of the food definitely justifies the high price. The service was exceptional. The staff was friendly, attentive and well trained. The team took the time to respond to special requests without seeming intrusive. The dishes were served quickly and the service was always present. An absolute must for sushi lovers looking for a high quality experience. Highly recommended!

From the get go our male waiter was quite pretentious. My friend spoke German and he also spoke English. We ordered our food, I didn't eat much of my food and asked for takeaway. He said okay but wasn't paying any attention. I told my friend that is not gonna to pack my food. And as he brought our dessert I asked him about my takeaway and he shrugged his shoulders and said oh my colleague threw it to the bin. No apologies no refund no deduction on the bill nothing. He even sent another waiter with our bill. Very disappointed.

The entrance smelled of sewage… The food (and place) was not actual japanese, and the sushi was not good. I can’t recommend this place

We were able to find a place for 3 people on Saturday afternoon without a reservation. However, we sat at a table in a room that obviously serves as a hot spot for service. All menu cards, cutlery and napkins were positioned there. That spoiled the atmosphere a bit. The food was excellent. I couldn't understand the high prices for tea. A jug the size of a cup is rare. The support with menu selection could have been a little more detailed. We waited a relatively long time when we finished eating until someone came and we could ask for further service. All in all okay, but not really convincing.

Very good food. Decent restaurant with extensive dishes on the menu. Price performance is okay. But at the upper limit. Ambience simple but still adapted and nice. An apartment converted into a restaurant. Staff very friendly. Food came quickly and was beautifully prepared. Portion large and sufficient.

About 3 weeks ago I ate for 40 euros (only a glass of water with me) and I didn't get full! Way too expensive for these prices. I also had food poisoning after eating (chicken dumpling & avocado salad), which I told the staff by phone that same evening. Worst experience in a long time. I absolutely cannot recommend it.

Citizens of Hamburg are good at going out to eat at a restaurant 🥇😊 also on a rainy Tuesday evening in November ☔️ where we found our way to a cozy Japanese restaurant Kaiyo, which gave us a wonderful experience 😋 tempura with prawns, gyoza chicken and kimchi for starter 😀 for main course grilled salmon with sweet potatoes 🙏 deliciously prepared and beautifully presented 👌 and we enjoyed the intimate atmosphere in the historic premises (two steps down from street level) from a previous century with newer Japanese details and finesse 👍 With plenty of dinner guests this weekday evening, we were not the only ones to be entertained and pampered - for a pleasant dimmed lighting and acoustics created a joy of conversation among the guests around us 🍀😀 thank you very much for lovely food and hospitality.

Probably the best sushi/Japanese restaurant in Hamburg. Anyone who knows the area knows that kaiyo is a very good restaurant. Food tastes incredibly good and the quality of the products is hard to beat. I have rarely eaten so well. Miso black cod and bluefin tuna were my personal highlights and I recommend everyone to try them. Top restaurant in a top location with top service. A smooth 10/10 with stars. Absolute recommendation

Super tasty food and totally pleasant to sit in (not too loud, nicely decorated) We were all thrilled and very satisfied (only the tuna tartare had too much coriander - you have to like it). Slightly higher prices, but it's worth it!

Best asian experience in Hamburg so far. Delicious food, really good drinks. Try hibiki based cocktails, you won t regret that.

Peccato che il cibo non sia niente di eccezionale e che lo staff non sia assolutamente epatico. Ho mangiato una Ramen molto grassa con carne d'oca abbandonata a se stessa senza cura degli ingredienti. Una cosa che mi ha dato un fastidio particolare è sentire il personale starnutire senza mettere le mani davanti. Posso capire che si vada a lavorare con l'influenza, ma almeno proteggersi loro e noi con delle mascherine e starnutire almeno con il braccio davanti.

Far too stuffy inside, a queue even though you have a reservation. Starter was forgotten, ramen wasn't traditionally Japanese and didn't taste good. For that price I definitely wouldn't come back!

I give it 3/5. I discovered the restaurant on Instagram and went there on the recommendation of the channel Insidertippshamburg, who recommended the restaurant. It was a little less hyped on site. It didn't smell particularly pleasant at the entrance and the cleanliness of the toilet wasn't taken that seriously either. We ate sushi, it was averagely tasty, but nothing more. For €28 and 18 maki we found the food to be overpriced. Wouldn't go there again in Hamburg to order sushi. But service was very nice and the food came quickly. So there is still room for improvement.

Visiting Hamburg for my work, after a day of hard working, i looked for a place with some nice Japanese food. Coming to this place i got welcomed very friendly. The place was buzzing with diners which is always a good sign. The food was really good! After living in Japan for over 7 months its sometimes difficult to find some nice/good japanese restaurants but this one does the job! Service is like always in a Japanese restaurant. Friendly, helpful and well timed. Food was just excellent! Enjoying some karaake and kimchi as appetiser and a nice bowl of Ramen as main. Highly recommendable! Till next time!

The food was disappointing and the price-performance ratio wasn't right at all! The taste is great, the service is good, but you don't get full and you have to pay an extraordinary amount for the small portions.

An inconspicuously great restaurant that looks very small from the outside and is so big inside but still cozy with separate rooms. The staff is so warm and friendly and the menu is varied from sushi to ramen. Large portions and quality very good, the eye eats too.

A really cute restaurant, with several small rooms where you can make yourself very comfortable. The food arrived super quickly and was really tasty, so if you're in Hamburg and want to eat Japanese food, this is the place for you. Staff, food and everything was great. Keep it up, we'll be happy to come back when we're in Hamburg again.

The tonkatsu was soft and delicious. I was happy that it had mustard on it🤣 The rice wasn't delicious, but it's a restaurant I'd like to visit again if I can eat it in Germany.

It was super fresh and deliciously prepared sushi. Every little piece was cooked perfectly. The toro was particularly tasty and the sushi rice was very authentic. The tempura was also very well fried. In the middle of Hamburg's old town.

Not satisfied. - the place is not really Japanese. - the service is kind, but too impatient. - the interior design is disrupted by a lamp, blinding the eyes. - the price of water (7.9 EUR) is unreasonable, and not on the menu's item list. - the water moreover tasted like tap water. - the food was okay, but "Traditional Tonkatsu" is very far from anything I've ever tasted in Japan.

We have tried this restaurant a few times over the last few years and have unfortunately found that the quality of the food varies extremely from visit to visit. One time you get a huge portion with fresh ingredients and good seasoning and the next time you visit the same dish is only half the size, bland and the ingredients are noticeably older. Our visit this week will now be our last. First our table reservation was completely ignored and we were then sent to a table that hadn't even been cleared yet. Then our drinks were forgotten again, which has happened every time there so far. But unfortunately the worst thing was the food that evening. The noodles in our ramen were completely undercooked and the bok choy tasted rancid. The vegan Tantanmen Ramen also lacked tofu.

Overall, I'm surprised because the place is rather quiet and in a quiet neighborhood... The food was fantastic, I must admit that I was surprised by the portion because it was large... Overall, I recommend it because it was affordable and the waiter serving us was very nice... If it weren't for the containers construction workers, and the views would be really pleasing to the eye.... We ate outside and our dog was also taken care of as it should, when we asked for water, he got it right away and even did little attractions :-).... You can pay by card and cash and finding a place is not difficult, unfortunately I don't know what the parking situation is like because we were in Hamburg without a car.... Overall a nice place

Daily menu with starter, main courses and dessert is particularly recommended. This is what Japan tastes like. Lots of small dining rooms that can be closed with sliding doors so you can celebrate in small groups.

The food was very good, except for dessert. This one was really terrible. The so-called caramel flan had nothing to do with caramel. The flan was drowned in coffee. Not a hint of caramel to be felt. As someone who doesn't like coffee, that's really bad. Added to this is the price. The two of us paid around 76 euros, so it wasn't cheap either. The service was okay

Six of us had dinner there and everyone was completely satisfied. Food was very good, staff very friendly and competent... Only our ordered ashtray, chilies and soy sauce were probably lost in the hustle and bustle :)
