Very friendly service. The soup was amazing, absolutely fantastic.

A truly delightful culinary experience awaited us here. We highly recommend ordering the ramen 🍜 – it's absolutely amazing! The mixed sushi platter was not only a feast for the eyes but also tasted exquisitely refined. The ambiance is very authentic, and reservations are highly recommended. Prices are on the higher side, but worth every penny.

We ordered Miso Ramen and Karaage. Ramen was good. I prefer hotter soup (temperature-wise), but it's for 'European' style, I guess. Karaage was not that good. Japanese Karaage is usually marinated before being deep-fried, but this Karaage only tasted like chicken itself. Not even salt&pepper......It'd have been better if the chickens are marinated beforehand. The service was good. The rooms were separated and feels like a private space, which was great.

Food was great as well as service, but what we did not like was that we were sitting very close to other people - that was distracting and a bit killing the atmosphere. The rest was just fine! Can come back again!

I had black cod miso marinated, absolutely delicious. A bit pricey, no regrets.

I've been to Kaiyo for lunch several times and have been delighted every time. The food is consistently delicious, and I highly recommend the ramen! The restaurant is very cozy and, thanks to the well-designed layout, pleasantly quiet without feeling crowded. It's definitely worth a visit.

We stumbled upon this place by chance during our trip to Hamburg and it was a real stroke of luck. Unexpectedly large, with a lovely, relaxed atmosphere. Very friendly staff and incredibly delicious food. We highly recommend the ramen, sushi, and mango salad, as well as the fantastic jasmine lemonade. We'll definitely be back!

The four of us spontaneously dropped by on a Saturday evening and managed to get a table. We had gyoza, two different kinds of sushi, and two bowls of ramen noodle soup with chicken schnitzel. Everything was delicious! The atmosphere there is also very nice and authentic.

ADDENDUM The owner's response is unfortunately no longer visible! In short, he apologized and explained the mistake by saying that they don't pressure guests to pay. Fine, BUT then why book a table in advance at all if they don't adhere to the timetable? If a group arrives 30 minutes early, do they then have to wait an hour for their reserved table?? That can't be serious! The response was so poor that even the owner deleted it! At least a proper apology, and perhaps a change in their table reservation practices. THAT would have been the bare minimum! ORIGINAL On February 24, 2026, we made a reservation for six people at Kaiyo for March 12, 2026. This was a birthday dinner, as noted in the reservation. We arrived at the restaurant at 7:50 p.m. and understood that it might take a little longer. At 8:10 p.m., we politely inquired again and were told not to worry, it would be ready soon. At 8:20 p.m., we were told that the other guests were now paying. We were also told that they would "compensate" for it. I replied that, frankly, I wasn't interested, as we had already been put off for 30 minutes. In the meantime, my daughter went to two other Asian restaurants around the corner and was lucky enough to get a table for us at Maison Mai. (Incidentally, we ended up having a wonderful evening there with excellent food!!). At 8:27 p.m., I told the waitress at the restaurant that we were leaving. She then told me that she had the table. I replied that I was no longer interested. This has truly never happened to me before!! I can understand that a reservation might get lost sometimes. However, having a reserved table only made available about 30 minutes later is absolutely outrageous and shows that the customer is not a priority here. How often have we ourselves been given a table in a restaurant only to be told that it was available until a certain time?! Kaiyo seems to have terrible management. Since this was also a family birthday celebration, which the restaurant was aware of, it makes this doubly disappointing!

Amazing experience. The duck was simply incredible – perfectly cooked, incredibly juicy, and bursting with flavor. And the yuzu beurre blanc was truly next-level. The combination of the fresh yuzu acidity and the buttery sauce worked incredibly well. The service was also top-notch: super friendly, highly competent, and you could tell they really knew what they were talking about. In the end, we ordered everything they recommended – and every single recommendation was spot on. What surprised me most was how much of the food was homemade. At many fusion restaurants, you tend to expect a lot of frozen or standard ingredients, but not here at all. Everything seemed fresh, creative, and made with a lot of love. And the value for money is incredibly fair for Hamburg. I honestly hadn't expected that. Six appetizers, a sashimi platter for four, four sushi rolls, two main courses, two waters, two drinks, and all the desserts they offered came to a total of 300 bucks. WTF. There are fusion restaurants in small towns that charge more. Really fair! All in all, a truly awesome restaurant. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

This restaurant was some of the best Japanese I have ever eaten. Highly recommend the tempura prawns, kaarage chicken and garlic butter rice. Slightly disappointed in the asking for a service charge and not turning away when the option was selected, but all in all a beautiful restaurant!

To all you Japanese foodies: We had the Chicken Ramen and the Katsu Classic – and it was fantastic. We deliberately chose two classic Japanese dishes to see if they could match the taste of our experiences in Japan. We were pleasantly surprised by how authentic and delicious everything was. We also loved the atmosphere: a charming, winding restaurant with many nooks that offer a pleasant sense of privacy. The service was excellent as well. Fairly priced for the lunch menu! Highly recommended overall! 🍜

Unfortunately, I really have to leave a negative review. We reserved a table two weeks in advance, and the restaurant confirmed the reservation. We arrived 10 minutes before our reservation time and checked in. We were told it would be a short wait, which was perfectly fine since we were early. After standing in the hallway for 20 minutes, someone came by and said we were about to be seated. We weren't offered any drinks in the meantime. Another 10 minutes later, we asked again. We were told the table would be ready soon. So we had been waiting for 30 minutes. Five more minutes passed, and still nothing had happened. No other guests were leaving, so the table hadn't become available. We tried asking the staff several times, but received no response. When we decided to leave 30 minutes after our reservation time, we were told the table would be ready soon. We left anyway. Our evening was ruined, as we had reserved the table for a birthday celebration. The service was incredibly unfriendly, the atmosphere was terrible, and during the 40 minutes we stood waiting in the hallway, six dishes and glasses broke, suggesting that the staff is untrained and has absolutely no idea about customer service. So, if you're not prepared to wait 45 minutes for a table despite having a reservation, avoid this place! We didn't even want to imagine how much longer it would have taken to get our food! While we were standing in the hallway, a couple sat in the corner who weren't served even once; they had neither food nor drinks. Absolutely unbelievable! Please shut this place down.

Highly recommended! It was my first time at Kaiyo, and I was truly impressed by the quality of the food. Everything was incredibly delicious, from the appetizer to the main course to the dessert—plus, the ambiance was really lovely, with several small rooms that meant fewer seats and a pleasant noise level for conversation. We had a reservation for six people (for a birthday) and had to wait almost 20 minutes for a table. No apology, no complimentary drinks – nothing. We were told to wait in the aisle, which the waitstaff had to use with food and drinks, so we were constantly in their way. When we were finally shown to a table, it was so cramped that those sitting with their backs to the next table were constantly being bumped, as the waitstaff and other guests kept passing through. It was incredibly crowded and noisy, making conversation difficult. We didn't like any of it at all. However, the ambiance is very special, and the food was good and made up for the inconvenience. The staff was friendly but reserved. From a culinary perspective, it's definitely worth trying.

A fantastic place with very tasty, authentic Japanese food and an unusual but cozy atmosphere.

Unfortunately, we had a rather unpleasant experience that day. We both ordered the Chicken Teriyaki, but the only other option was Chicken Katsu (schnitzel). This is why we chose the Teriyaki. Unfortunately, what arrived was a dish with Katsu, even though it wasn't marked as such on the menu. The breading was twice as thick as the meat, and when we tasted it, all we could taste was pure fat. Aside from that one small taste, I left my plate untouched. My companion even peeled off the breading and found the meat itself to be very bland. When I explained why I didn't eat the dish (see previous points about the inaccurate description), I received a somewhat overwhelmed apology, but was offered a replacement, which I declined as I had lost my appetite. In the end, there was no further attempt at compensation, and I had to pay for everything, which is not how things usually go. I paid, and we both left the restaurant hungry. ... Based on the menu alone, I would recommend going for lunch; the selection is more varied and the prices are more reasonable for the portion sizes. The ambiance itself is nice, and the restaurant was busy, which speaks well of it. Unfortunately, our experience was not like that of the other guests.

We ate at Kaiyo for the first time today and both opted for brunch. The food was beautifully presented and tasted fantastic; the variety of dishes made it really fun to try everything. The service was friendly and attentive without being intrusive. This is how dining out should be! We'll definitely be back :)

The atmosphere is very cozy. The food is excellent. I had a vegetable/curry/chicken dish, one of the best Japanese dishes I've ever eaten. The portions are quite large. And the staff is very friendly!

Excellent Japanese restaurant! The pork and ramen are superb. The value for money is really good. The service is friendly and efficient. It's not too loud, and we even got a table for two without a reservation (at lunchtime). It's advisable to make a reservation in the evening.

It was quite busy at lunchtime, but we were lucky. The edamame was delicious and the ramen was excellent. We'd definitely come back. The service was top-notch and very attentive.

A truly fantastic restaurant. If you're in the area, I would definitely recommend the sushi over, say, the ramen. The ramen was okay, but nothing special – the sushi, on the other hand, is absolutely delicious and of really high quality!

Top notch food. We’ve been there twice and food is really good. We only had sushi there, and some appetisers. Ingredients taste fresh, portions are quite good. For us the prices are a bit higher than in other restaurants but it is worth it. The service was also very good. The servers were very nice, polite. And the food came quite fast. Atmosphere is very pleasant, it’s beautiful there, the whole style of the restaurant is so authentic. Would recommend!

A wonderful atmosphere. The service is friendly, fast, and welcoming. The star here is the food. Every dish looks like a work of art and tastes absolutely delicious. There were three of us, and every single one of us was more than satisfied.

We ordered two ramen dishes and they were very good. We've had a hard time finding good ramen in Europe, and this has been the best so far. The place is very nice and has a great atmosphere. The service was excellent.

The location is amazing – you can still feel the historical charm. The team was consistently friendly, polite, attentive, and quick. And last but not least, the food: it was fantastic. I've never eaten such delicious fried chicken! And the ramen was incredibly good. But be warned: the ramen portions are surprisingly generous! P.S. The dessert "Nama" is my top recommendation for a sweet treat.

We really enjoyed the food; the ramen was delicious and the burgers were great too. The dessert wasn't quite as impressive, not bad but not amazing either. We loved the atmosphere and would definitely come back and try more things on the menu. The drinks selection was excellent.

We happened to walk past it at lunchtime and spontaneously went in. We had, among other things, the classic tonkatsu and were so impressed with the food and the location that we came back the very next evening for sushi, which was also absolutely fantastic. The service was excellent both evenings, and the staff were very friendly.

We just went here for coffee, matcha and mango sticky rice. Service is very good, everybody very nice, also no problem with english. Sadly - matcha is just milk. You cannot taste matcha at all, we tried both. I am a fan of mango sticky rice in general, so I can compere and this one was very weak. Rice was too salty and too hard. It was also pretty bland. I don't know about food in general, since this was all we tried but if you looking for place for matcha and desserts, this is not it. Menu looks super promising and I was planning to come here for dinner but I lost the trust after quality of this :( Coffee was okay. And again - no complain to the service, I appriaciate it especially during Christmas 🎄 when everyone would be prefer to be home.

This was our third visit, and unfortunately it was disappointing. We arrived on time for our reservation but were still made to wait. Staff walked past us several times without saying anything or explaining the delay. We waited about 45 minutes, trying to be understanding, but it felt like we were being ignored. When we finally asked again, the response we got was unfriendly. It’s really sad because this used to be one of our favorite places, but after this experience, we probably won’t be coming back.

The food is average, but overpriced. If there weren't so many restaurants in Hamburg, that would be okay. But unfortunately, there are many significantly better alternatives, so you get the feeling that the experience isn't worth the money. A top spot for Japanese food in Hamburg – we had several appetizers (gyoza, tempura shrimp, sushi) that all tasted exceptional and fresh. For my main course, I had the tonkatsu, which was also very good. The presentation of the food is also worth mentioning! In addition, the atmosphere is very inviting – we'll definitely be back!

Unfortunately, the food wasn't very good and it was very expensive. The miso ramen was okay. The wonton mien were very disappointing, as they were very watery and the dumplings barely had any shrimp. It certainly wasn't authentically Japanese, as others have described, but perhaps Vietnamese. It all looks fancy, but it's more style than substance. The only positive thing I can say is that the noodles had a good texture. However, that's no use if the soup/broth tastes like nothing.

Don’t come. As asian, asian restaurant in Germany disappointed me again. It is operated by Vietnamese and tastes nothing like Japanese. We ordered the Wonton Men and Miso Ramen. The wonton noodles tasted nothing like the original Hong Kong wonton, broth was just ok but way overpriced (21€ for 3 wontons). It called Schrimp Wonton but had 0 schrimp taste. I don’t know what’s going on with the people who said this is this the best they have ever had. RUN!!

Delicious sushi in a lovely setting. Allergens are clearly marked. I'm gluten intolerant and ordered edamame, sake sashimi, tuna maki, mackerel maki, sake maki, avocado maki, and flambéed sake nigiri – note to order the flambéed sake nigiri without the decorative sauce. I brought my own gluten-free soy sauce and everything was perfectly fine. I'd gladly come back again :)

The only downside is that you shouldn't sit too close to the door - it opens and closes constantly, and it can be a bit annoying. But otherwise a really good experience and definitely a place I would come back to.

A beautiful, authentic Japanese restaurant with a great atmosphere! There was a wide selection of dishes, and we had two different ramen, both of which were delicious! The layout is also unique and very cozy. The prices are perfectly reasonable!

Everything was great. Amazing food, amazing staff, and a wonderful atmosphere.

The food is excellent, the fish tastes fresh, and the combination of flavors in the roll is worth repeating. I ordered the Truffle Tuna and Flamed Salmon rolls. The signature cocktails were quite good; I recommend the Roku Brasil Smash. I'm not giving it 5 stars because some of the staff were rude and rushed customers to leave. Note: The waiter is very friendly.

Before going to the UNIQLO next to Hamburg City Hall (Rathaus), we stopped by for lunch. We ordered a Sashimi No Moriawase and Oyako Don, and they were very delicious. I would like to visit again when I come back to Hamburg. I recommend it to everyone.

The food was delicious. The quality and taste were excellent. However, the prices are very high, and in my opinion, despite the high quality, there's still room for a 10% to 15% reduction. €33 for a small piece of black cod is too much, even for top quality, and €11 for sticky rice with fresh mango is definitely pushing it. The service was very attentive and friendly. Our only complaint that evening was the old wooden chairs. They were very uncomfortable, and the seat cushions didn't help much. There was also a crossbeam under the table that prevented us from stretching our legs. If the table and chairs are replaced, this separate room will be perfect, as it allows for undisturbed conversation. Because of the lack of seating comfort and what I consider slightly inflated prices, I've deducted one star. For quality, taste, and service, I give it 5 stars.

I ordered Chicken Ramen, the fried chicken was nice but the ramen soup tastes like clear corn soup more than a ramen. Service was super bad! I didn’t expect the chicken ramen was served with fried chicken separately with the ramen. Just because I said, Wow there’s extra fried chicken. The waitress defensively told me you ordered chicken ramen right? I have to explained to her that wasn’t a complaint, it was a surprise. Anyway, from we entered till we left the servers were kind of snobbish. Not coming back here and not recommended at all. Staff need to learn some manners, not authentic Japanese food.

We reserved a table for nine people in a separate room – that was great. The interior and atmosphere are very nice, the service was okay, but not particularly friendly – ​​rather indifferent; we didn't get a single smile. The weakest point, however, was the food: you can get much better ramen in Hamburg, the steak tartare was quite bland and simple. The sake was unfortunately very bad; it tasted strongly of alcohol, probably very cheap. In Japan, both the sake and the food are completely different. We wouldn't come back a second time, but it's a convenient place for groups, as there are many different seating options.

Delicious sushi – albeit rather un-Japanese. Overall, quite expensive: €11 for a 0.1-liter glass of Pinot Gris – incomprehensible. Friendly service, mediocre ambiance.

Update October 2025: We've been here at least five times with friends, family, and colleagues and tried the entire menu. Yesterday I had the vegan Tantanmen Ramen for the first time, and it was SO delicious, with an incredibly good broth. <3 The Nama Chocolate for dessert is a bit heavy for 9 euros and the three small bites, but incredibly good and the perfect portion size for me. I'm making the next reservation right away for in two weeks :D We have a lot of good Japanese restaurants in Hamburg, but Kaiyo is our favorite. Wonderful restaurant with super delicious Japanese food. We were there mainly for brunch - the Japanese breakfast was extremely delicious. The grilled miso salmon and the miso soup were especially my favorite. The kids loved it too 😀 My husband also had a kind of donburi with rice, chicken, and scrambled eggs, which he also really liked. The karaage was also particularly juicy and crispy on the outside; so far, it's the best in all of Hamburg. It wasn't a bargain—we paid €200 for four people, including tip. But the taste and quality were definitely worth the price, and you'd pay even more for a proper kaiseki 😀 Our new favorite Japanese restaurant in Hamburg.
