Kaiyo - Japanese Restaurant in Hamburg

the sushi was so delicious that i didn't expect that at all. portions were enough much and delicious! Service was also so caring and present and for other things i can give even more stars than 5!

The small winding Japanese restaurant is very lovingly decorated. Unfortunately, despite a reservation, we had to wait more than half an hour. Which was a bit of a shame. The restaurant was very well stocked. But still, the food was very quickly at the table after the order. Also special requests (a dish from the lunch menu ordered in the evening) are totally uncomplicated when ordering. The initial long wait was still very worthwhile. Because it was a successful dinner due to the service of the staff.

The sushi was absolutely fantastic! The freshness of the ingredients was at the highest level, and the rice was cooked perfectly - slightly sticky but not too mushy. Particularly noteworthy were the special sushis, which were refined with a variety of creative toppings and sauces. The selection of fresh fish, from tuna to salmon to less common varieties like hamachi, was impressive. The quality of the food definitely justifies the high price. The service was exceptional. The staff was friendly, attentive and well trained. The team took the time to respond to special requests without seeming intrusive. The dishes were served quickly and the service was always present. An absolute must for sushi lovers looking for a high quality experience. Highly recommended!

From the get go our male waiter was quite pretentious. My friend spoke German and he also spoke English. We ordered our food, I didn't eat much of my food and asked for takeaway. He said okay but wasn't paying any attention. I told my friend that is not gonna to pack my food. And as he brought our dessert I asked him about my takeaway and he shrugged his shoulders and said oh my colleague threw it to the bin. No apologies no refund no deduction on the bill nothing. He even sent another waiter with our bill. Very disappointed.

The entrance smelled of sewage… The food (and place) was not actual japanese, and the sushi was not good. I can’t recommend this place

We were able to find a place for 3 people on Saturday afternoon without a reservation. However, we sat at a table in a room that obviously serves as a hot spot for service. All menu cards, cutlery and napkins were positioned there. That spoiled the atmosphere a bit. The food was excellent. I couldn't understand the high prices for tea. A jug the size of a cup is rare. The support with menu selection could have been a little more detailed. We waited a relatively long time when we finished eating until someone came and we could ask for further service. All in all okay, but not really convincing.

Very good food. Decent restaurant with extensive dishes on the menu. Price performance is okay. But at the upper limit. Ambience simple but still adapted and nice. An apartment converted into a restaurant. Staff very friendly. Food came quickly and was beautifully prepared. Portion large and sufficient.

Without a reservation, three of us got a place on Saturday evening. Quickly served, super fast food delivery. Very tasty food in a nice atmosphere. We'll be back ⭐️

About 3 weeks ago I ate for 40 euros (only a glass of water with me) and I didn't get full! Way too expensive for these prices. I also had food poisoning after eating (chicken dumpling & avocado salad), which I told the staff by phone that same evening. Worst experience in a long time. I absolutely cannot recommend it.

We had incredibly delicious ramen and a sushi platter. The fish is phenomenally good and you can taste the quality straight away. Top!!

Citizens of Hamburg are good at going out to eat at a restaurant 🥇😊 also on a rainy Tuesday evening in November ☔️ where we found our way to a cozy Japanese restaurant Kaiyo, which gave us a wonderful experience 😋 tempura with prawns, gyoza chicken and kimchi for starter 😀 for main course grilled salmon with sweet potatoes 🙏 deliciously prepared and beautifully presented 👌 and we enjoyed the intimate atmosphere in the historic premises (two steps down from street level) from a previous century with newer Japanese details and finesse 👍 With plenty of dinner guests this weekday evening, we were not the only ones to be entertained and pampered - for a pleasant dimmed lighting and acoustics created a joy of conversation among the guests around us 🍀😀 thank you very much for lovely food and hospitality.

Probably the best sushi/Japanese restaurant in Hamburg. Anyone who knows the area knows that kaiyo is a very good restaurant. Food tastes incredibly good and the quality of the products is hard to beat. I have rarely eaten so well. Miso black cod and bluefin tuna were my personal highlights and I recommend everyone to try them. Top restaurant in a top location with top service. A smooth 10/10 with stars. Absolute recommendation

Super tasty food and totally pleasant to sit in (not too loud, nicely decorated) We were all thrilled and very satisfied (only the tuna tartare had too much coriander - you have to like it). Slightly higher prices, but it's worth it!

Best asian experience in Hamburg so far. Delicious food, really good drinks. Try hibiki based cocktails, you won t regret that.

Peccato che il cibo non sia niente di eccezionale e che lo staff non sia assolutamente epatico. Ho mangiato una Ramen molto grassa con carne d'oca abbandonata a se stessa senza cura degli ingredienti. Una cosa che mi ha dato un fastidio particolare è sentire il personale starnutire senza mettere le mani davanti. Posso capire che si vada a lavorare con l'influenza, ma almeno proteggersi loro e noi con delle mascherine e starnutire almeno con il braccio davanti.

Far too stuffy inside, a queue even though you have a reservation. Starter was forgotten, ramen wasn't traditionally Japanese and didn't taste good. For that price I definitely wouldn't come back!

I give it 3/5. I discovered the restaurant on Instagram and went there on the recommendation of the channel Insidertippshamburg, who recommended the restaurant. It was a little less hyped on site. It didn't smell particularly pleasant at the entrance and the cleanliness of the toilet wasn't taken that seriously either. We ate sushi, it was averagely tasty, but nothing more. For €28 and 18 maki we found the food to be overpriced. Wouldn't go there again in Hamburg to order sushi. But service was very nice and the food came quickly. So there is still room for improvement.

Visiting Hamburg for my work, after a day of hard working, i looked for a place with some nice Japanese food. Coming to this place i got welcomed very friendly. The place was buzzing with diners which is always a good sign. The food was really good! After living in Japan for over 7 months its sometimes difficult to find some nice/good japanese restaurants but this one does the job! Service is like always in a Japanese restaurant. Friendly, helpful and well timed. Food was just excellent! Enjoying some karaake and kimchi as appetiser and a nice bowl of Ramen as main. Highly recommendable! Till next time!

The food was disappointing and the price-performance ratio wasn't right at all! The taste is great, the service is good, but you don't get full and you have to pay an extraordinary amount for the small portions.

An inconspicuously great restaurant that looks very small from the outside and is so big inside but still cozy with separate rooms. The staff is so warm and friendly and the menu is varied from sushi to ramen. Large portions and quality very good, the eye eats too.

Delicious Japanese food in a beautifully decorated location. But prices are quite high and seating is quite narrow. Therefore only 4 stars.

A really cute restaurant, with several small rooms where you can make yourself very comfortable. The food arrived super quickly and was really tasty, so if you're in Hamburg and want to eat Japanese food, this is the place for you. Staff, food and everything was great. Keep it up, we'll be happy to come back when we're in Hamburg again.

The tonkatsu was soft and delicious. I was happy that it had mustard on it🤣 The rice wasn't delicious, but it's a restaurant I'd like to visit again if I can eat it in Germany.

Fast, attentive service, a table that was too small was immediately assigned a new one. Recommendation. Sushi platter from the boss for 2 people and of course the right sake wine. Great evening despite the high number of guests, everything was very pleasant. Always happy to come back,,,,😃

It was super fresh and deliciously prepared sushi. Every little piece was cooked perfectly. The toro was particularly tasty and the sushi rice was very authentic. The tempura was also very well fried. In the middle of Hamburg's old town.

Not satisfied. - the place is not really Japanese. - the service is kind, but too impatient. - the interior design is disrupted by a lamp, blinding the eyes. - the price of water (7.9 EUR) is unreasonable, and not on the menu's item list. - the water moreover tasted like tap water. - the food was okay, but "Traditional Tonkatsu" is very far from anything I've ever tasted in Japan.

We have tried this restaurant a few times over the last few years and have unfortunately found that the quality of the food varies extremely from visit to visit. One time you get a huge portion with fresh ingredients and good seasoning and the next time you visit the same dish is only half the size, bland and the ingredients are noticeably older. Our visit this week will now be our last. First our table reservation was completely ignored and we were then sent to a table that hadn't even been cleared yet. Then our drinks were forgotten again, which has happened every time there so far. But unfortunately the worst thing was the food that evening. The noodles in our ramen were completely undercooked and the bok choy tasted rancid. The vegan Tantanmen Ramen also lacked tofu.

Authentic, delicious food, great service. We are super satisfied and would love to come back!

Overall, I'm surprised because the place is rather quiet and in a quiet neighborhood... The food was fantastic, I must admit that I was surprised by the portion because it was large... Overall, I recommend it because it was affordable and the waiter serving us was very nice... If it weren't for the containers construction workers, and the views would be really pleasing to the eye.... We ate outside and our dog was also taken care of as it should, when we asked for water, he got it right away and even did little attractions :-).... You can pay by card and cash and finding a place is not difficult, unfortunately I don't know what the parking situation is like because we were in Hamburg without a car.... Overall a nice place

Daily menu with starter, main courses and dessert is particularly recommended. This is what Japan tastes like. Lots of small dining rooms that can be closed with sliding doors so you can celebrate in small groups.

The food was very good, except for dessert. This one was really terrible. The so-called caramel flan had nothing to do with caramel. The flan was drowned in coffee. Not a hint of caramel to be felt. As someone who doesn't like coffee, that's really bad. Added to this is the price. The two of us paid around 76 euros, so it wasn't cheap either. The service was okay

The lunch set was great with 1 drink and dessert included in the price. There was no waiting time in the morning and we were served immediately. Only the matcha latte had too much milk and hardly any matcha, otherwise everything was delicious

The ramen was very tasty. Vegetarian selection is limited to one dish. I've had better ramen but it was still definitely good. However, the ramen was way too expensive. 18€ for a relatively small portion and even without a very noticeably superior quality, therefore only 4 stars because the price is simply very steep. The staff is nice and the location is very pleasant and quiet.

Boring sushi. Sloppily prepared, with uneven cuts and small pieces tacked together. The "special sushi" mostly consisted of unevenly chopped filling, heaps of tasteless mayo, jam from the supermarket and minimal fish. Which was particularly a shame, since the fish was actually pretty fresh and tasty, in and of itself. No heart put into the food at all. Absolutely not worth the price (though it seems all sushi in Hamburg is unreasonably expensive?).

I found it by chance and i was really satisfied. I ate ramen and stick rice mango. All good.

Hier stimmt alles: Essen, Getränke, Atmosphäre und Freundlichkeit. Wir hatten beide unterschiedliche Vorspeisen und Hauptgerichte. Jedes einzelne war super lecker! Eine Vorspeise haben wir sogar nochmal bestellt, weil sie so toll schmeckte :-) Der Cocktail als Aperitif war auch genial, die Inneneinrichtung sehr hübsch und gemütlich, Bedienungen alle super freundlich und zuvorkommend. Hier kommen wir gerne wieder, und können es wirklich nur empfehlen.

Tenía la tempura de camarón y aperitivos de pato, buena porción pequeña y muy bueno. Ramen era bueno también. No me derribó para dar 5 estrellas, pero realmente un buen 4. Lo recomendaría.

We just found this place randomly, looking for places to eat nearby. There was seating outside which had people eating there, but we opted to sit inside because of the smoking. The place had a cozy dinner vibe, albeit a little dark. Service was excellent as the two servers frequently came to hear if everything was alright. The food I ordered, tonkatsu, tasted amazing and the place began to fill up as the time passed. If you are in the area looking for Japanese cuisine, I definitely recommend Kaiyo.

Sushi is very good. Frame was not Japanese. The dashi broth was missing. Tempura and some other things in a Japanese restaurant. Very nice atmosphere.

The food and drinks here are very tasty and the price is absolutely justified. The restaurant can get busy at peak times, so reservations are recommended. When the weather is good you can also sit outside on the terrace. The service is very friendly and the atmosphere makes you feel very comfortable. The central location near the town hall market is of course practical if you're going for a stroll in the city center anyway. To the Kaiyo team: keep it up! :-)

Because of the great website, I had very high expectations, and I also really liked Cöllns before because of the great ambience. After my visit I have to say: the food is ok, but too expensive and not special enough. The service is very friendly and accommodating. The ambience is still great, but compared to the previous Cöllns it was only supplemented by a few new pictures (some of them just printable). This doesn't seem particularly high quality and a bit out of place. A pity

We celebrated our wedding anniversary here and it was really beautiful! Very nice and attentive service, good food, tastes (almost) like Japan and pleasant acoustics thanks to several small rooms. Tip: there is a room with a large table for 9 people (maybe more...) There are many vegan and vegetarian dishes. Gladly again soon!

Food was delivered very quickly, and it was beautifully arranged. Besides classic Japanese dishes such as ramen or donburi, they also offer vegetarian and vegan options. The food was great, as was the service. However, it was super tight and therefore extremely loud. We could barely talk to each other.

We tried a few different plates, the portions were small but very tasty. There was sufficient attention and care in presentation and service. “Grilled honey duck chest” was my favorite. The ideal place for those looking for a refined Japanese experience.

2024.05.28: I had a miso ramen, which was extremely good. Intensely spiced and full bodied broth, the pork meat had a really special clove and cinnamon flavour. Marinated ginger was on top of the soup. For tlme the pak choi was too much, that's probably personal. 16 euros, so one of the more expensive ramens in Hamburg, but also the biggest portion I have had and probably price quality ratio is still top.

We chose this restaurant with my girlfriend because of the exterior design and we decided to give it a try. It was the best decision ever made. The atmosphere and the interior design were great. We went inside, and we flew directly to Japan. The service gave us the menu, and we checked the menu. We chose the truffle tuna sushi and the roasted salmon. Both of them were excellent sushi, very tasty and unique. I haven't eaten so tasty food sushi long time. Then the duck ramen arrived, and another great dish added to our list,it was simply AMAZING. Not heavy, very balanced, and tasty The duck was perfectly cooked, and the homemade lemonade was very delicious and refreshing. I recommend this restaurant 100% please if you love Japanese cuisine, this restaurant is must.
