Kaiyo - Japanese Restaurant in Hamburg

I got poisoning from meat that wasn't cooked properly or was past its best. I got salmonella as a result. My friend also said, "The meat doesn't look good, so I'm not going to get poisoning from it." It's unbelievable that people pay so much for this.

I liked it here. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is nice. We ordered duck breast and ramen. The portion of duck was a bit small, but well prepared. The food is very tasty. The pricing is average. We didn't have to wait long.

I had the pleasure of experiencing this restaurant yesterday for a birthday, and I have to say I'm so glad I went. The service was extremely good—very friendly, very attentive! And then the food arrived. I had the grilled salmon—what can I say? It was so incredibly delicious. Simply perfectly prepared, and the combination of sweet potatoes and nut butter, including guacamole and lemon, was unbeatable. I highly recommend this restaurant, both here and personally. Thank you for the delicious experience!

The food here isn't bad, but the portions are relatively small and expensive. The value for money isn't right here. The edamame weren't cooked long enough, and the sauces were quite flavorless. We won't be returning.

Overall, it was nice there and the food was good, but unfortunately, the service seemed very arrogant, and we felt like we were intruding. What a shame!

No smiles, very cold. It's a shame. Despite the excellent food, I wouldn't go back, but that's perhaps a matter of opinion.

A fantastic Japanese restaurant in the heart of Hamburg. We discovered it on a city tour and immediately treated ourselves to dinner. The food is truly delicious and the prices are absolutely reasonable. In good weather, you should sit outside; in bad weather, you can admire Hamburg's oldest oyster exchange and the incomparable Art Nouveau tiles inside.

I was to join a group of people, and went in, the waitress looked so confused as if I am here to steal the cutlery and entering inside. Food was below average and service was slow, did not get the sauce I ordered.

We had pork belly, tuna tartar, and ramen. Everything was very deliciously prepared, but each one was different from what you'd normally get. I'm going to say that all of it was made without MSG. I'm fine with Asian cuisine, as it's simply part of the cuisine's repertoire. At Kaiyo, everything tasted very natural. Each ingredient was unique. Tartar usually requires egg yolk. Pork belly requires soy sauce. But I didn't think so, and it still tasted very good. The service was friendly. I like the atmosphere. There's no reason to deduct a star anywhere. I'd be happy to come back.

Five stars are more than deserved here. The service is incredibly attentive and on the ball. Both the drinks and the food arrived really quickly. There's absolutely nothing to complain about with the food – it was perfect! And the location is truly something special. The prices are more than fair for what you get. You have to try this place if you like Japanese cuisine :).

Absolutely recommend the sashimi. I had the steak as a starter and the large sashimi plate, along with homemade motchi. I'm thrilled.

We arrived spontaneously (on a weekday) and got a table straight away. Since it was warm, we opted for the large outdoor area. We got our drinks and the menu very quickly. After ordering our food, we didn't have to wait long for our duck breast ramen; it was delicious and fresh. The sushi we ordered was also fresh, delicious, and very attractively presented. The service was good and they asked if everything was okay and if we needed anything else. The restrooms were clean. All in all, a successful evening. Highly recommended.

A pretty good Japanese restaurant, stay away from the bronze table (there’s only one), the table’s metallic smell is a bit unbearable. The rests are fine though.

Fresh sushi, we ordered tuna sushi and the duck breast. Super delicious. Chicken with teriyaki is also nice. Ramen is a lot of noodles inside in the portion. The drinks is also fine. Service is friendly.

There was hardly any wait time for the food, which can be both a positive and a negative. Unfortunately, I didn't like it; it was a bland Japanese burger with teriyaki chicken on top. I didn't notice the teriyaki effect, and the meat didn't look particularly tasty.

How can you claim to be a Japanese restaurant and serve tempura with soy sauce! No point! My husband had his Miso soup and I also wanted a soup. I asked the waiter if I could have one too. He said, I'll ask the kitchen or else I'll give you a bowl and you share your husband's!!!! Nothing really had any taste. The tempura really wasn't good! This is really an overrated restaurant! Avoid!

Zeer fijne Japanse keuken. Als voorgerechtje hadden we de dumplings met kip en deze.waren bij uitstek de lekkerste die we ooit hadden gegeten. Ook onze voorgerechten waren uiterst smaakvol en verfijnd. De.bediening was eerder kordaat maar misschien typisch voor een Japans restaurant

It was a really nice place and atmosphere. We ordered a delicious starter and the sashimi was nice too. The tonkatsu was very delicious. Perhaps a bit more of the tonkatsu sauce would be appreciated. The only thing I would criticise was the fact that they served it with jasmine rice and not Japanese short-grained rice.

The chef's choice and a premium sake are what we truly enjoy, topped off by excellent service, when we want to treat ourselves to something special. Guests are treated with great care, and everything, combined with the ambiance, makes for a pleasant evening for us. We don't come to Kaiyo often, but we always enjoy it. Advance reservations are recommended.

The food was delicious. Unfortunately, we didn't get any napkins. The teapot was extremely small. I suspect it was 150 ml. The mochi was frozen.

Ramen were ok. Tasted like an european-localized version, this could be a good place to begin with, if you’re not familiar with Japanese food. Misinformation in menu - Kimchi is Korean, not Chinese.

The food was sensational! Simply an explosion of flavors! The prices were perfectly reasonable, the portions were large, the staff was friendly, and the atmosphere was great. It's within walking distance of the town hall.

We went there for dinner one weekday evening. There was a huge selection of Japanese food. The service was very attentive. The food we had was delicious, and the proximity to the town hall makes it even more attractive. You can even sit outside in the summer. It's just a traffic-calmed, single-lane road that runs past, making it very quiet outside.

The only things that my friend and I was surprised (negatively) is the matcha soju, it sound so fancy until it is serve with wine glass and it taste so so sweet without any alcohol taste and it was cold. Sorry it is because i am not translated fully the menu and did not ask properly 😅 However, I always like the wide variety of food options they have. They have the finest salmon belly and different type of standard Japanese food eg ramen curry rice, sashimi. And I especially like the way they use their time to make the food presentable and with many tiny attention. I like to recommend their place to small business dinner as well, so people taste something different fancy yet affordable price. One thing I hope they could improve is having English menu or more photo for people who are not familiar with Japanese cuisine name.

- Far from authentic Japanese food, operated by Chinese/Vietnamese - Food was not great. Pork cutlet was overcooked and tough - Maki rice was not suitable sushi rice - Place had a funny smell - charged 3 Euro for the glass of still water - misrepresentation of some dish. I.e. Kimchi is not Chinese cabbage.

I highly recommend the lunch menu. A great selection at reasonable prices. The service is attentive but unobtrusive. On my last visit, there was a somewhat unpleasant smell when I walked in, so I deducted one star for the ambiance. Overall, though, I really enjoy coming to Kaiyo.

On the recommendation of the hotel, we had dinner at Kaiyo: a wonderful culinary experience, certainly one of the two or three best Japanese restaurants we visited in Europe! Charming and efficient service. We will come back to this before leaving Hamburg.

Nice ambience, creative combination of European and Japanese cuisine. Warm towels in advance were a nice gesture. The food was good, only the tonkatsu was a bit dry and the entrecote had a thick tendon. Given the prices, that shouldn't happen. Miso soup and Japanese curry without coconut milk would be nice.

The atmosphere is very nice, the food came quickly and was adequately prepared as far as the meat and fish were concerned. Unfortunately not authentic Japanese cuisine, sauces tasted like instant fried sauce, especially the teriyaki sauce is not recommended. The cola was no longer carbonated and tasted watered down. It's a shame, we were a bit disappointed with the quality of the food.

Wonderful location. Lots of choice, something for everyone. I can highly recommend the homemade jasmine iced tea. We ordered ramen, it came very quickly and was extremely tasty. Would love to come back.

The taste is just mediocre - no special aroma. However, the ambience is very nice. Unfortunately, in the end the waitress became quite pushy as soon as you didn't want to order another drink - it felt like: "Then please pay if you don't want anything more." You can easily get a table without a reservation.

Were eating Japanese for the first time. That's why we got a little advice. The nice lady explained to us very patiently what was what and recommended one or two things to eat. We had ramen and salmon, and before that, sushi and duck. Everything was very tasty. Thank you very much, we will definitely come back when we are back in town.

We had an excellent meal at this restaurant. The menu offers options for all tastes, and the service was kind and efficient. Families with small children aren’t always warmly welcomed at restaurants, but here we felt truly welcomed. We ordered ramen, tonkatsu, and sushi – all of them were excellent! The price was ok for japonese food. I would definitely come back more often. They really deserve 5 stars here in the reviews.

The best spontaneous visit of the year so far. Super consistent! Good food, good service and very welcoming. We were impressed by the friendly, glowing cat in the window of the guest room, which is cellar-like so that you can perfectly observe the feet of the walkers 😉😁 All joking aside, we would love to come back. As tourists on Saturday evening without a reservation, we tried our luck but had no chance of getting a table. There was hardly anything going on on Sunday evening! The atmosphere was really great and the staff were very friendly and attentive. The price is a bit more expensive but definitely justified - the sushi tasted very good!
