So, I can recommend the Zollhaus. My schnitzel wasn't that tasty. My girlfriend was very satisfied. Everyone's tastes are so different. The fries, however, were very tasty. And a big plus point goes to the freshly tapped Mühlenkölsch beer. The service was more than excellent. They often asked if everything was okay or if we needed anything else. 5 stars for this. My girlfriend and I love quaint restaurants in and around Aachen. And the one in the old Zollhaus is definitely one of them for us. We'll be happy to come back.

German restaurant recommended to us by our hotel. The meal was very good, a little too salty for my taste. The waitress was neither friendly nor welcoming. We asked for water, expecting a carafe of tap water, which is free in all French restaurants. Instead, we were served sparkling water in a carafe. The waitress cleared our plates and never came back. After a while, we went to the reception desk to pay. It was a shame, as we would have liked dessert. The bottle of water cost almost €7, which was a nasty surprise. A mixed experience.

The Altes Zollhaus is a true gem! From the moment you enter, you sense the welcoming atmosphere! A blend of historic charm and cozy hospitality. The service is attentive, warm, and always with a smile. The food? Simply outstanding! Fresh, creatively presented, and of the highest quality—each dish is a small work of art. The owner runs the restaurant with palpable passion and a keen sense for his guests. I was particularly impressed by the attention to detail, from the appetizer to the dessert. During our trip, we wanted to stop near Aachen/Monschau to enjoy a truly excellent Wiener Schnitzel. I found this place in Aachen via Google...we finished the day with a truly fantastic veal schnitzel—absolutely SUPER! We sat outside on the street, which was perfect, with no traffic. The service was very friendly, and the food was truly AMAZING. We even got a small soup on the house as an appetizer, which was also delicious. I definitely recommend this place!

Not a recommendation... Unfortunately, a veal schnitzel didn't taste good, and I haven't seen onions in salad that were so chopped into chunks in any restaurant. The beer was good and the service was friendly. But for that wait and that money – never again.

Honest feedback with suggestions for improvement I've known the Zollhaus for years and have always been very satisfied. Unfortunately, on my last visit, I noticed that the quality had declined. Specifically, the sauce for the "Zollhaus Renner" was significantly too thick – almost a mushy consistency. While it tasted good, the creamy heaviness diminished the overall experience. The Belgian fries were excellent as always, and the schnitzel itself was okay, but not outstanding. Regarding the ambiance: It would be nice if the candles on the tables weren't just for decoration, but actually lit – that would add significantly more atmosphere to the room. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case at any of the tables occupied. I hope these comments help restore the usual quality – because the potential and previous experience clearly speak in favor of the Zollhaus!

We had reserved the separate room with 15 seats for a team meeting; otherwise, the place was packed, with several groups registered. It was very hot in our room, and a not-so-fresh towel was waving in front of the ventilation. The first drinks were served after about 20 minutes. To be on the safe side, I ordered an "Italian Salad," which, according to the menu, would consist of various leaf salads with tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, sun-dried tomatoes, carrots, grated Parmesan, and balsamic dressing, served with bread. The salad plate served consisted of iceberg lettuce and arugula, 2 thick slices of cucumber, 2 halved mini tomatoes, a bit of carrot, and 2 pieces of sun-dried tomatoes, all completely covered with grated hard cheese from a can and not at all fresh Parmesan. - The dressing was forgotten and brought later, consisting of mayo diluted with water and a dash of balsamic vinegar. - The "bread" consisted of four wafer-thin, toasted slices, obviously cut from a self-service baguette. I would never have thought a simple salad could taste so bad. Next door, it wasn't any better: - The cream sauce from the cream schnitzel was smeared with slices (it had a consistency like hummus). The boned pork chop used with it was tough and boneless. - The turkey breast we ordered, on the other hand, was also twice overcooked. While it's desirable for poultry to be cooked well, it shouldn't be a rubber eagle. When we complained, the waitress explained that the chef was too busy. Although... if you have space for 80 guests and accept 80 reservations, maybe you should be able to serve 80 guests reasonably well. Maybe we really were just having a bad day. Because not everything was bad and the currywurst with fries was highly praised by the person sitting opposite and would have been excellent!

Great restaurant! We had a delicious schnitzel and sauerbraten. The service was always quick and very friendly. The chef is also very friendly, asked how we were and even took the time for a quick chat. The prices are absolutely great for what's on offer! The atmosphere is also very pleasant. We'd be happy to come back!

I have eaten here numerous times for their excellent schnitzels, and because it was super convenient to the IBIS Hotel round the corner where I stay. However, a word of warning to non-Germans. The sauce that comes on the schnitzel is overpoweringly strong. I think its to German taste as I've experienced this a few times in Germany. I suggest asking for the sauce on the side so you can control and/or dip as you go along. Otherwise, an excellent meal, especially with a good German Pilsner alongside.

A good place for schnitzel and fries. It was very tasty. The Zollhaus salad looked good at first glance, but it had a few wilted leaves and, unfortunately, a bit of sand. I almost sent it back. But I continued eating it with gritted teeth. Addendum: Thank you for the excellent response and answer to my review. I'll be happy to come back and increase the star rating accordingly!

The way we were received was simply fantastic. We reserved a table for 20 people five months ago, then received a confirmation email four weeks before the scheduled time. Upon arrival, they told us it was reserved, we don't have a reservation, we have no service staff, and only one chef. But why don't you just put together a few tables yourself? 👎 Unfortunately, there was no manager there. We had no choice but to stay there and wait three hours for the food. The veal Wiener schnitzel was overcooked and completely gray. I'll spare you the details of the other dishes. Since it was a gathering of people from all over Germany, you really had to be ashamed to have been there. I assume the manager isn't aware of any wrongdoing. So, that's it.

The atmosphere is simply fantastic. We're here every Sunday. The food is always top-notch! And the delicious Leffe beer is second to none! The waiters are all super friendly. You just feel at home :-) Keep it up!!

A quaint restaurant with excellent food. Don't be fooled by the looks! Both meat lovers (steak, schnitzel) and vegetarians (huge salads, tarte flambée) will find something to suit their taste. A special treat from the kitchen (delicious pumpkin soup). Super friendly, welcoming service. The chef delivers the food personally and is also incredibly sweet. All in all, highly recommended! We ended up here thanks to the “Enjoyment with Plus” voucher book. We were greeted very friendly and courteously. Beforehand there was a greeting from the kitchen. Overall, the food is recommended. One star deducted because of the price/performance ratio and as a recommendation for the boss: there must be at least a small side salad.

Leider war das so angepriesen Zollhaus Schnitzel - im Fett verbrannt- wie eine Schuhsohle die Soẞe pampig oben drauf und viel zu wenig. Beim Salat zu wenig Dressing nur oben drauf ein bisschen. Einfach enttäuschend bei den Preisen und Stolze 6,50 für ein Weizenbier. Nicht zu empfehlen.

The Renner schnitzel is absolutely top.

The first impression from the outside is deceptive. Inside, the old customs house is rustically beautiful, with friendly staff and good schnitzel. The onion soup was particularly good and there was a large selection of draft beer.

Ordered fries to take away, didn't look at the price and almost fell off my chair €15 for two tiny portions, ridiculous. Not accepting order was refused.

Rump steak was a 10/10. Would come eat here again.

Quaint rustic atmosphere. Very comfortably furnished. We had the vegan schnitzel with fries and the “Renner sauce” (vegetarian). There's always a "little greeting from the kitchen" to try beforehand. Also vegan upon request. Unfortunately, the price-performance ratio is too high: €20 for two (small) meatless schnitzels plus fries served on a salad corner is clearly too much. It's a shame, otherwise we would come by more often. Tip: It's best to reserve in advance, otherwise if you visit spontaneously, there may be no free tables left and you'll be sent away.

Unfortunately you can't give "no" stars. Bad, unfriendly service. Burnt schnitzel with bland and tasteless sauce - like stretched soup. Not to mention that after 2 hours of waiting, not even the starter was on the table. Compared to this restaurant, every motorway rest stop is a 5-star gourmet temple.

The worst schnitzel I've eaten in a long time. Waited two hours from arrival (18 people) for the first starter. Another half hour for the schnitzel and rump steaks. Rump steaks were very small and the sauce on the schnitzels was cold and tasteless or had a strange sweet note. I'm definitely disappointed and won't be coming back for now. The service was quite stressed and therefore a little unfriendly.

Anyone who goes to the Zollhaus expects a rustic atmosphere and hearty food. And that's what you get. However, at a very good level! Six of us visited the customs house and had various schnitzels and salad. Before that, an extremely delicious greeting came from the kitchen with pumpkin soup. All dishes were sumptuous, very tasty and (which is unfortunately more commonplace everywhere) handmade. The service from the very attentive boss and an equally friendly employee was pleasingly good! You felt welcome and always well served. The shop was full, but the service kept everything under control and the food came in a completely reasonable time (estimated around 15-20 minutes). Several years ago we visited the customs house frequently with a large group (>15). I can very well imagine the location under the “new” owner. We will definitely come back!

Schnitzels were overpriced for this quality. We also waited almost 45 minutes. The sauce was thick and tasteless. The service was inattentive. There were four of us, we all had different schnitzels and no one liked it. What a disappointment, unfortunately things are getting worse here. There is also sometimes a strange audience sitting at the bar who chats you up.

Very, very long waiting times (>1 hour) for the food to arrive. I ordered cream schnitzel with fries. Schnitzel was quite hard and overall rather tasteless despite the sauce. Fries were quite greasy and also hard. Unfortunately I can't recommend it. Edit after the answer from the owner: Yes, we were a large group, but we registered beforehand, perhaps this could have been taken into account in the personnel planning. No matter how we moved around the room (which didn't really happen), it doesn't matter that after placing the order it took over an hour until we got the food. In addition, table by table was ordered, with a break in between, so that the kitchen didn't have to prepare everything at once. I finished it, but that doesn't mean it was tasty. For the money you pay, it just wasn't worth it, in my opinion.

Ordered there: the food was delivered quickly, the delivery person was very nice and the food was great and the sauce is packaged separately, which I personally like very much because then everything doesn't get soggy. The schnitzel is clearly homemade and the ingredients (for me mushrooms) are also fresh and not from a can. The price is reasonable, especially when you consider that in other restaurants you often pay more than 10 euros for a frozen Fritösen schnitzel. The Belgian fries are super tasty as a side dish. I don't know where else you can get these as a side dish in Aachen.

Went to the Altes Zollhaus for schnitzel on July 1st, 2024. Delicious schnitzel with fries....sat in the small dining area...typical old Aachen pub atmosphere with tables and chairs from the 50s to 70s...wood paneling on the walls...just the way it used to be...schnitzel It was great... service was great with a friendly “little greeting” from the kitchen. We will always enjoy eating in the Zollhaus pub when we visit Aachen and simply enjoying the smell of the old Aachen pub scene.

Vor Corona waren wir immer begeistert. Jetzt war es eine Katastrophe. Nur ganz wenige Gäste da und trotzdem mussten wir über 35 Minuten auf Schnitzel warten. Die Pommes waren grenzwertig dunkel. Die Schnitzel hauchdünn, aber lecker zart. Total überteuert, 23,90 € ohne Salat. Bedienung lustlos. Da bieten andere Restaurants mehr. Andere Gäste die nach uns kamen, beschwerten sich weil das Essen nicht kam nachdem sie 40 Minuten gewartet hatten. Seeeehr schlechter Service, schade.

Super leckeres frisch gezapftes Bier. Aufs Essen zwar etwas länger gewartet, konnte man aber leicht mit einem weiteren leckerem Bierchen überbrücken. Das Schnitzel war es allemal wert. Absolute Empfehlung. 👍

Nothing has changed in the old customs house. Everything is as we have known it for years. The food is great, but the prices have risen considerably. Recently the price difference between a large and a small schnitzel has become clear. Approximately 5€. But you have to say that the small one is quite sufficient at a price of €16.90 without salad. It is undoubtedly very tasty.

Years ago, as a child/young person, I was in the old customs house in Essen. Now, after years, we ate there again under the owner David Pyras. What can I say...the service was friendly, not intrusive, alert to empty glasses and didn't seem overwhelmed even when a larger group arrived. The food was, as I remembered it, “Schnitzel Zollhaus” a dream. Before that there was a delicious greeting from the kitchen which was really tasty. The atmosphere is cozy and rustic and everything is clean. Good value for money and we will definitely come back.

excellent meat, the rest to forget... including the sauces... Rude dining room staff and an hour-long wait with a semi-empty place. Excuse given: so many illnesses! look elsewhere. After the review received today from the manager, we are not quite there: 1. I have never left my cell phone with them (they must have been confused) 2. the extras they mention would have been €4 (to have the sauce not on the steak but €1/portion separately... let me understand) and in any case of the 4, 2 were still taken into account... 3. Thanks for the advice but I still wouldn't have come back to you!!!
