Hohe Düne Restaurant & Schirmbar in Juist

I spent a week on Juist and enjoyed the wonderful atmosphere at the umbrella bar. After a long walk on the beach or around the island, I had a fantastic cocktail there – a Planter's Punch and a Dubai Chocolate. The service was incredibly friendly and efficient. I'll definitely be back. I could write so much more.

The Caesar salad was poorly washed and had a sandy crunch. Unfortunately, the wait staff didn't even apologize. Very poor and unfriendly service, and the prices were exorbitant.

Everything was simply fantastic. The food was delicious, the service impeccable, and the ambiance simply beautiful.

The location, overlooking the sea, is stunningly beautiful. However, tonight, after a two-year hiatus, we were once again disappointed: unseasoned dishes and inept service – a shame, it used to be much better.

We were there last night, but the staff prioritizes finishing work. We were greeted with "but no more cocktails," even though the place was still busy at 9:40 p.m.

For the sake of "exclusivity" and prices, I'd like to see oat milk offered for hot drinks. For me, it's actually a given.

Currywurst, the best in the Ruhr area, and then this. A special version, a great sauce, the coarse version, was served here. Along with that, a delicious salad, a magnificent view, and fantastic service. No wish was left unfulfilled, and that smile still caresses our hearts. We actually didn't want to leave at all... One year later... still the same level of quality and a fantastic pasta with porcini mushrooms

The starter was very good, but the main course was rather poor. It could have been cooked longer and was oversalted in places. Raclette 2.0 is not recommended—it has nothing to do with raclette, but rather poorly cooked potatoes with cheese...

We were in the umbrella bar and, of course, had alcoholic drinks, like every other guest. When it was over, we were asked to leave, but then one of us dropped his glass and it fell onto the bar. The waitress (a thin man with a long beard and tanned skin) then became aggressive, violent, and abusive. He grabbed one of us by the collar and hurt us badly. He's lucky that no charges were filed. This happened despite an apology because the glass fell 10 cm (but remained intact). Yes, that can happen in a bar. Please don't go there. A disturbed man works there.

A beautiful sunset after a very good meal with exceptionally friendly service. Special requests (such as extra pepper sauce for the fillet) were no problem at all; the restaurant manager was always willing to listen to all guests. We can't even begin to relate to some of the highly exaggerated reviews here.

An absolute feel-good spot on Juist! The "Hohe Düne" boasts a stunning location overlooking the North Sea – perfect for relaxation. The atmosphere is tranquil, stylish, and welcoming. You immediately notice the attention to detail here. The service is always friendly and attentive. Particularly beautiful: the terrace at sunset – simply magical. If you're looking for a break from everyday life and want to experience Juist at its best, this is the place for you. Clearly recommended – we'll be back!

We actually just wanted a drink and, out of curiosity, glanced at the menu. It was so appealing that we spontaneously changed our original plans. The service outside was very pleasant and friendly. The dishes we ordered were delicious (very mildly seasoned, but you can always add more seasoning). However, the mashed potatoes could be improved; either make them yourself or look for an alternative. The view of the sea is, of course, the icing on the cake. All in all, a great experience.

We stopped in there once on a whim and were always served nicely. It's right on the beach, and if you arrive barefoot, no one will say anything. :-)

Beautiful location, great view, but that's about it. Very high prices, unfriendly service—the customer is more of a nuisance—and the interior doesn't have a pleasant atmosphere. Truffle fries... are regular fries with truffle ayo at an exorbitant price.

The unfriendly reception put us off our appetite tonight, and we left. Apparently, the Hohe Düne restaurant doesn't feel the need to do this and thinks it's best to treat guests in a way that makes them feel unwelcome.

Great atmosphere, mostly nice and attentive service. Good quality of the products, unfortunately the taste was disappointing this time. The starter (kingfish) was extremely sour and had no other seasoning and the main course (lobster) was fried and tough. The criticism, which was really nicely expressed, was met with a bit of pique and was not addressed further. It's a shame given the prices, as I've always been very impressed.

The ambience and especially the service are the best things to experience on Juist. Particularly positive because the catering industry has been continuously reducing its price and performance for years. Food selection good and unusual, portions very large (!), but in need of optimization in terms of taste and quality. The ossubuco should have been cooked much longer, the cordon bleu a bit too dry, and ultimately not seasoned properly. I'll definitely come back, but then I'd eat something different.

The best view of the North Sea while enjoying a protected Aperol or Limoncello spritz? Yes, you can do that here in the Hohe Düne umbrella bar. The staff is very friendly and the drinks are great. A real 🔝 spot on the island.

According to the menu there was a cream of asparagus soup, but there was no cream in the soup. I've never seen such a thin soup, unless it's a broth, and expected more for the price. Great view.

How great this address used to be. Chef recently ran away, incompetent staff, inattentive service. Prices are still the same as before, quality and service are nowhere near any more. Unfortunately one of the locations where you often end up because of the location, unfortunately now almost exclusively because of that. Regrettable.

I have now tested several recommendations on Juist, this is now my recommendation among the restaurants (hotels excluded)

As with most locations, the price and performance ratio here is unfavorable. We have been holidaymakers for many years and have been able to observe the price curve well. The end has been reached. In some locations, prices have even been reduced somewhat. ...... Juist also has to consider which “clientele” it wants to attract.

Visited several times in 09/2024. In our opinion, simply the best bar/restaurant on Juist. Unbeatable location with beautiful views of the sea and beach. Plus good food and good service. Typically high prices on the island, but here with really good value. We tried something else/cheaper, but always came back here. Top.

Unfortunately the price-performance ratio doesn't fit. The prices for the dishes do not correspond to the quality of the food. For example, pasta with truffle cream and shrimp is offered for >32€, but is more like a tomato sauce with shrimp. Some mussels cannot be opened or are raw. The service was good, but not above average. Unfortunately a disappointing evening.

The guests in the swimming pool are treated like the last thing. You are seen through the window from both conditions, but instead of taking the order straight away you prefer to continue chatting cheerfully. When asked about this behavior you will be told a cheeky lie. Hardly think of an apology... The fries and ice cream were tasty, but service like that - never again

Highly recommended. We were there as a wedding party and had a flying buffet. So different courses with small, delicate appetizers kept coming to the table. Everything was very attractively presented. Fine dining.

A beautiful, timeless atmosphere with a good view of the North Sea. The service was friendly and accommodating. Answered all questions about possible allergens at the neighboring table excellently. They take care of the guest. The portions of the individual courses were a bit too much for my taste...BUT it was very tasty. The price-performance ratio matches the kitchen. I can only recommend the location. I'd love to come back.

The location of the location is undisputedly exclusive; a great view over the North Sea is guaranteed. But the food still has room for improvement. The currywurst, for example, is served in a small mason jar. The sauce is very tasty, but the sausage is more of a bratwurst. And the fact that no real cutlery is served unfortunately doesn't fit with the ambience and the price. But the service was very good and quick. All in all recommended!

This afternoon my husband and I had a hot waffle and mint tea in the Hohe Düne on Juist. Unfortunately the tea, not fresh mint, tasted a bit musty. Good service and great view 🤗

Nice ambience and a great view. The service was fine. The beef fillet was great! The “Friesentapas” starter plate should also include something “tapas-like”. Basically a delicious smoked fish plate with salad and bread. The fries weren't particularly good and the mashed potatoes were pretty boring.

We just ate cake and drank something there. Cake was very tasty. The location is great. You sit very high and you can see a lot.

We had reserved a table for today, which was assigned to us at 8:15 p.m. When we entered the restaurant at 8 p.m., it was almost empty. We had previously informed ourselves on the half board and looked at the menu stored there! Some of it no longer matched the menu in the restaurant, so we couldn't even order the dishes we wanted. So we left “Die Hohe Düne” without eating! What a shame actually!

Man merkt, dass die Kellner keine professionelle Ausbildung in der Gastronomie haben. Man ist bemüht - aber doch etwas unbeholfen. Der Blick ist toll, die Stühle sind bequem. Leider ist die gastronomische Auswahl auf Juist generell eine Katastrophe, so dass ich im Vergleich mit einigen anderen Restaurants im Zweifel sogar noch mal wiederkommen müsste.

Our opinion = CAUTION! CAUTION! CAUTION! (even if they keep trying to delete the review!!!!) A long-term reservation for a special life event is 1 week!!! Previously canceled by the Hohe Düne or tried to rebook to another (not comparable restaurant) with the argument that there may be other guests from another company who want to come with several people! In our opinion, there was absolutely no professional way of conducting the conversation and Ms. Ute B. became annoyed and simply hung up! Even after attempted consultation, no adequate clarification was possible! Just duck away! For us and our guests, this is an unfair and absolutely inhumane, undignified way of dealing with things and that is why we will never recommend this location!!! AND AGAIN: FOR US, BE VERY CAREFUL when making reservations (other guests who heard this from us also experienced something similar...) A SHAME A SHAME A SHAME and in our opinion only minus points on the entire line of the Hohe Düne on Juist!!! We are writing this review because neither the owner Axel R. nor Ms. Ute B. were willing to consult, or the promised callbacks were not kept!!! In our opinion, that makes it much worse and worse…. SO unfortunately this is the only way we have to communicate...even if we would have preferred this in a personal conversation! Unfortunately a minus in every form!!!

We went there because of the good reviews and the view. The shop could be humming all the time, like the white dune or milk bar on Norderney, Gosch on Sylt or in St. Peter-O. But apparently he doesn't, because we easily got a table in the front row at 2:30 p.m. There were two of us there with a dog and we looked for a place under the shade of an umbrella. The service was not particularly well organized or divided. It took 20 minutes until we were noticed. Despite the fact that two neighboring tables were served. After ordering from a lady who seemed competent, we received a right and a wrong drink from a very friendly other waiter. This only became apparent because I was surprised and didn't know the drink, but I complained about the lack of cooling and lack of carbonation in the spritz to lady one, who immediately recognized the error. This was immediately remedied thanks to Lady 1 and served by waiters two in a very friendly manner with apologies and questions etc. When the food was delivered, the drinks man (No. 2) was still present at the table. Waiter three (apparently experienced in the shop) told us very directly that the umbrella had to be put back in its place because WE couldn't/weren't allowed to move it. We were taken aback and said that it was already there and that was why we chose the spot. Waiter two jumped in and said he moved it because the previous branches had asked for it. Waiter 3 then quickly and clearly explained to Waiter 2 why and why this wasn't possible, standing at our table and therefore directly in front of guests. Our order consisted of 2x small prawns in garlic oil (8 pieces!!!) with bread and aioli. Bread was delivered together and was 5 pieces of small baguette slices for two glasses of aioli. Individually it would definitely be more than two slices per person. The dog was not offered water, something we experience everywhere else. The whole thing for €21.90 per person! In total with a spritz and two beers we paid a good €63,- We expect to pay a lot on a holiday island in high season and in a good location and are happy to do so, but here the price did not match the service in general. We won't be coming back!

The food was good and recommended, unfortunately we had to eat on bar stools in the umbrella bar with our toddler, which was quite difficult. We asked for a table in the restaurant at 5 p.m. and were rudely told that everything was already reserved. No one was sitting in the restaurant at the time. When we went to the toilet we received a call asking for a table in 20 minutes, that wouldn't be a problem! Unfortunately it was too windy and cold on the terrace. When we left the restaurant at 6 p.m., there were still 5 unoccupied tables in the restaurant. The waitresses seemed annoyed. The view is of course super beautiful. With a better table and a little friendliness we would have come back.

Anyone who is not afraid of extremely high prices and can live with the fact that the high-priced cocktails are not first-class can enjoy a magnificent view of the North Sea in a cultivated atmosphere. A great place to admire the sunset in the evening. Because of the average quality of the drinks that don't do justice to the prices quoted, only 3 stars. If that doesn't bother you, you can add two stars here

Absolut perfekter Abend! Wunderschöne Terasse mit Meerblick und Sonnenuntergang! Professioneller und sehr freundlich Service, Sehr leckeres Essen! Reservierung hat gut geklappt und war auch gut so. Wir hatten den zweiten Slot um 20:15 Uhr. Es war dann nicht mehr heiß und wir hatten den schönsten Sonnenuntergang. Wir kommen wieder!!

In previous years we were always very satisfied despite the high price level. This year no more: the prices have risen significantly, are no longer justified and are well above the island's already high level. The portions are quite manageable and lukewarm. The staff tries hard, but with hardly any guests present, they are almost overwhelmed, unable to imagine what would happen if the restaurant were as full as it used to be, but they are very friendly, although the attention when re-ordering drinks could be better. We were there with a reservation at 8:15 p.m. and were pretty much the only ones in the outdoor area, there was a reservation sign on most of the tables, but it didn't get any fuller and from 9 p.m. (open until 10 p.m.) we could hardly be expected and it defies logic. It's a shame about the reputation of the former great ambience...

We've been vacationing on Juist for years and always enjoy stopping at the restaurant. Today we were very disappointed; the service was very attentive and friendly, but was clearly overwhelmed despite the small number of guests. The order was taken incorrectly, the wrong food was served, inattentive to the required drinks etc... the food was sometimes only lukewarm, side dishes with the fish, apart from accessories such as flowers, were not available... and significantly more expensive than the year before... unfortunately not again so quickly

A nice place to eat. You can enjoy your food here right by the sea and receive quick and friendly service. But unfortunately it is very expensive here (as on the whole island) and the food is just average. I had a cheeseburger with fries. The fries were really great and hot, but the burger was also good but only lukewarm. The crab soup was also only lukewarm and not a highlight in terms of taste. I don't remember exactly, but with two warm drinks we were already over €40. Well...Island life.

Unfortunately, the price-performance ratio is no longer correct. People are used to high prices on Juist, but having to run after the waitress to order something or to pay is unacceptable. We have always been very happy in recent years, but this year it was simply a disaster. A pity.

The truffle fries only contain a small amount of truffles and the truffle mayo has also decreased in intensity and taste in recent years. I have ordered these for years, but unfortunately I was very disappointed this year. The currywurst is also absolutely nothing special and doesn't do justice to the price. The service at the Rondell is always good and attentive, but the staff in the restaurant has slacked off. Several tables outside were occupied, but no waiter came by for at least a quarter of an hour. Ultimately, a customer went in to look for a waiter, at which point 4 tables made requests. A pity! Otherwise always very tasty food and, above all, a beautiful view.

Ein absolut perfekter Abend: Der Service ist sehr nett und kompetent, es wurden alle Sonderwünsche respektiert und auch bedacht. Das Essen war perfekt, wir hatten das Tomaten Ochsenherz Carpaccio mit Parmesan Chips, Büffel Mozzarella und Oliven Tapenade, sehr gut zum teilen. Als Hauptgang hatten wir das Kalbs tartar u d das Rinderfilet. Auf den Punkt Medium gegrillt und super aromatisch, die Pommes perfekt frittiert und der Salat wie gewünscht ohne Dressing. Der deutsche Rosé passte perfekt zum Fleisch, ein absolut perfektes Essen! Abgerundet mit dem zauberhaften Sonnenuntergang über dem Meer , wir saßen bis 22.30 Uhr auf der Terrasse. Ein perfekter Abend, DANKE. an das ganze Team ❤️

There wasn't that much going on the evening before, which is due to the time of year. Still comfortable and you could have a good chat. The service was always attentive and friendly. Definitely worth a visit again for me in quieter times.

Wir haben dort Schweinemedaillons mit Ravioli und Hähnchenbrust auf Gnocci gegessen sowie Wein und Saftschorle getrunken und waren überaus zufrieden. Das Fleisch zart, die Beilagen sehr ordentlich zubereitet. Dazu netter Service und m. M. angemessener Preis für das Gebotene. Hinterher noch ein Drink im Rondell mit Blick über das Meer zum Sonnenuntergang - ein Traum.

Auch wir fanden das Essen sehr fad. Der Lachs war gut gebratenen, doch die Beilagen ließen zu Wünschen übrig. Vom Geschmack einfach langweilig. Eine Menage auf dem Tisch würde schon helfen um nachzuwürzen. Da keine Servicekraft kommt und fragt, ob es schmeckt, oder bei einer Flasche Wein mal nachschenkt. Service an den Kunden ist klein geschrieben. Es wird lieber laut gegähnt, oder gestöhnt. Was bei einer Rechnung von fast 100,00 € sehr zu Wünsch lässt. Auch bei 10,00 € gehört solch so etwas nicht.

Das Restaurant liegt sehr hoch, einige Stufen sind zu überwinden, doch die Aussicht macht alles wieder wett.Essen sehr gut und auch ausreichend, Service und Ambiente stimmig, es lohnt sich auf jedem Fall mal vorbei zu schauen

Wir hatten eine kleine Feier in der „HOHEN DÜNE“ und es ist alles äußerst zufrieden stellend abgelaufen. Essen, Getränke und Service waren absolut TOP. Der Abend endete schließlich in der Schirmbar. Das ganze war ein Fest in einer besonderen Atmosphäre. Jederzeit wieder.

Essen ist so ok. Aber die Lokation und vor allem die Servicekräfte sind der Hammer. Tolle Abende verbracht.

Wir waren in unsrem Urlaub vollsten zufrieden mit der Hohen Düne, so dass wir fast jeden Tag da etwas gegessen haben und am Abend noch etwas getrunken. Schöne Grüße an den Kellner Tim der uns mit seiner freundlichen und tollen Art uns immer wieder bei Seite stand. Kommen sehr gerne wieder

Ich bin jedes Jahr, wenn ich auf Juist bin, mindestens einmal zum Essen in der Hohen Düne, dies Jahr an meinem Geburtstag. Ich war diesmal sehr enttäuscht. Der Empfang war noch gut, dann kam relativ schnell mein Essen. Den Gruß aus der Küche habe ich - anders als alle Tische um mich herum - gar nicht bekommen. Das Püree und das Wiener Schnitzel waren fad und ungewürzt. Es sind ausreichend Servicekräfte rumgeflitzt, aber ich bin nicht einmal gefragt worden, ob alles recht ist. Meinen Nachtisch, doppelten Espresso und Friesengeist habe ich dann woanders eingenommen. Und wenn man dann kein Trinkgeld bekommt, muss man auch kein dummes Gesicht machen, Trinkgeld ist dafür da, guten Service wertzuschätzen, der diesmal leider gefehlt hat. Vielleicht im nächsten Jahr wieder!

Nicht ganz günstig, aber die Lage kostet natürlich auch. Und die ist einfach wunderschön, direkt am Strand gelegen, mit Blick über die Dünen und das Meer. Aufmerksamer, sehr freundlicher Service, eine kleine, aber gut austarierte Karte und das Essen ist auch sehr fein. Auch die Bar auf dem Gelände ist toll, hier sitzt man richtig schön und kann den Abend bei Wein oder Cocktails schön ausklingen lassen.

Sehr schön gelegen. Aber wir essen eigentlich hier schon seit 5 Jahren nichts Größeres mehr. Heute haben wir es nach langer Zeit mal wieder versucht. Der Caesar Salad war voll mit Sand. Das Dressing für den Blattsalat war ungenießbar. Das Schnitzel war ok.
