HeimWerk Altstadt in Düsseldorf

There are many different types of schnitzel. You actually create your own plate by choosing the meat, coating and side dish. The best part is that if you are not hungry enough to have a main course, you get a half portion when you order it as a “snack”. I got the crispy chicken + roasted potato snack. It was very filling and good. The tables and benches are not comfortable, we could not sit and eat for a long time. The sink was very dirty, I did not expect this.

Very tasty food, lots of vegan options. The vegan celery schnitzel was great, and the truffle mayo is also vegan, very tasty, and full of truffles! And they serve Augustiner Helles, which is really rare in Düsseldorf! ☺️ It's just a shame that the mushroom schnitzel is only vegetarian and not vegan; perhaps this can be changed in the future 😉 The staff are also very friendly, but the noise level is quite high due to the space.

We were there for dinner with a larger group. The large selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes impressed us. They also offer more unusual versions of schnitzel and burgers that you won't find anywhere else. Overall the food was very tasty. The only drawback was that it was very busy on Saturday evening and unfortunately the service suffered a little as a result. The service staff seemed very stressed and you had to wait longer to order or pay. Overall, it was a nice evening at home. If we are in Düsseldorf again, we would like to come back.

Two small veal schnitzels, lukewarm fried potatoes with no taste and a colslaw that looks like it comes from a can. And unfortunately for €30 it's not what I would have expected. I'm disappointed.

The worst Kaiserschmarrn of my life – a culinary disappointment I don't even know where to start. I love Kaiserschmarrn – light, airy, slightly caramelized, a pleasure that melts in your mouth. But what I was served here was a complete disappointment. The first plate arrived: burning hot, but the Kaiserschmarrn itself was cold. This already suggested that it was not freshly prepared. A suspicion that was confirmed with the first bite. The consistency was reminiscent of stale bread soaked in sugar water, without any lightness or flavor. No trace of fluffy, caramelized Kaiserschmarrn - instead a bland, mushy mass. To be fair, I gave him a second chance. This time the dish was warm throughout, but unfortunately the taste was just as disappointing. Either a ready-made mixture was used or the preparation was simply incorrect. The art of whipping egg whites correctly doesn't seem to be known in the kitchen. The rest of the food wasn't convincing either: the schnitzel was extremely greasy, the fries looked like they had been fried several times in old oil. It was particularly unfortunate that despite these shortcomings no solution was offered. A gesture of accommodation would certainly have improved the impression, but instead the full price was charged as if everything had been perfect. If you want to enjoy real Kaiserschmarrn, you should look for a better alternative.

We had dinner there on Shrove Monday and had a lovely time. The food came quickly and was very tasty. The service is very nice and attentive.

We were spontaneously in Düsseldorf and came across DIY by chance - a real stroke of luck! The service was extremely friendly and helpful. We were particularly impressed with the schnitzel: the breading was perfect – golden brown, crispy and yet pleasantly light. The meat was of excellent quality, super tender and juicy. A big plus is that many of the ingredients come from the region, which you can definitely taste. A great restaurant with great food and an honest, sustainable philosophy - we'd love to come back!

Food was very tasty, cordon bleu filled with black forest and obazda was a hit! We didn't know that before. Backhändl was neat and juicy. Basil-lime mayo dip (homemade) was also great. Service was friendly and quick. Ambience cozy and modern. Definitely a recommendation 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Unfortunately we had to wait a very long time for our food (45 minutes plus). The fried potatoes were at most lukewarm, as was the schnitzel. We were offered to exchange the food, but due to the extremely long waiting time and tickets at the Apollo, we said no. Unfortunately, there were no other compensation offers such as free dessert or espresso on the house. It's a shame, it could definitely be much better. In addition, one of the plates was damaged (severely chipped on one side) and should not have been served that way. All in all very sobering, as the good reviews had brought us here.

This was the second time we had food delivered. It was soooo delicious. Mega delicious salad dressing, crispy salad, great chicken schnitzel, delicious fries with (absolutely breathtaking basil dip, lemon) and at the end the classic Kaiserschmarren. Simply top!!! We always enjoy coming to the Heimwerk, but mostly because of the delicious beer. We have also eaten several times. There is nothing to complain about in terms of taste, but the portions are quite manageable and relatively expensive. We are used to something different from Franconia. The incredibly friendly and attentive service is particularly praiseworthy. We rarely encounter this in Düsseldorf! 👍🏻

Really great choice of food and drinks, very welcoming service. At some points, the waiters were overwhelmed due to multiple parties entering at the same time, and there were some extended waiting times for drinks, but other than that everything was perfect. Really nice soundtracks, design, and atmosphere.

Einen Punkt für freundliche Begrüßung und Begleitung zum Tisch. Einen Punkt für die Kunst, ein Kalbsschnitzel so dünn zu kloppen, dass die dreifache Menge Panade dran hängen bleiben kann. Bratkartoffeln hatten auch schon mal bessere Tage. Preis-Leistung passt nicht. Mit Beilagen lag das Schnitzelchen (der Scheinriese) bei fast 30€. Alter Verwalter!

We ended up in DIY by accident. We ate and drank really well. It's great that you can order different sizes for all dishes. So I was able to test 2 with just one meal (schnitzel and spaetzle) 🤩. If we ever find ourselves in Düsseldorf again, we will definitely come back.

Super well baked, the side dishes without any things in them that don't belong. You can choose between small and normal portions, just a good concept! The service then ran smoothly. Unfortunately, our visit to HeimWerk Altstadt was a thoroughly disappointing and annoying experience. Reservation and reception Our group arrived in two parts. While the first group was shown to our reserved table without any problems, the second part of the group, which arrived about five minutes later, was almost turned away by the staff. It suddenly said that no table had been reserved for them. Only after a discussion and renewed reference to the existing reservation were they allowed to sit with us. service During our entire stay, the waiter only came to our table twice in two hours - once to take our order and once to bring the food. Not once was we asked if something was missing or if we wanted to place further orders. The waiter only served from one side of the table, which meant that in a group of more than ten people we had to shout across the table. Neither when ordering nor when serving the food did he show any willingness to go even three meters further in order to serve all guests equally. Everything had to be passed through - absolutely unprofessional for a restaurant of this type. Lack of hospitality: The waiter consistently seemed impersonal, humorless and obviously demotivated. It was clearly noticeable that he had no interest in his work and showed no interest in ensuring that his guests had a pleasant stay. Escalation in payment When we finally wanted to pay, we first had to go to the counter to even find staff who would serve us. When the waiter finally appeared, the person who requested the bill asked him to move to the other side of the table as it was tiring to communicate across the large table. The waiter showed no understanding, but reacted annoyed and initially refused. Only after a heated discussion did he come to the other side, albeit with an aggressive attitude that further escalated the already tense situation. When we asked the waiter that we would have liked to have ordered more but no one asked, he responded unimpressed and snippy with "Now I'm here, what do you want?" When we then angrily said that we just wanted the bill , he replied completely disrespectfully: “Take it easy, dude.” When we asked for the boss, the waiter first introduced himself as the boss, which later turned out to be a lie. After we repeatedly insisted on speaking to the real boss, he came threateningly closer to us and aggressively asked: “What do you actually want?” Do you have a problem?” It was a completely unprofessional escalation of the situation. The boss who was finally brought in initially showed no understanding of the situation and tried to continue the discussion. Only when he realized that we were right did he stop the discussion. At least paying afterwards went smoothly – a small ray of hope in an overall catastrophic service experience. Eat The food was mostly okay, although part of the cordon bleu dish was still raw - an absolute no-go. Mistakes like this shouldn't happen in a restaurant. There are no classic sauces such as mushroom cream or hunter's sauce for the schnitzels, only special dips that are not to everyone's taste. It would be desirable to offer a larger selection that also takes more traditional tastes into account. Conclusion Visiting HeimWerk Altstadt was one of the worst restaurant experiences we have ever had. Such unfriendly and incompetent service as well as disrespectful treatment of guests is unacceptable. One thing is clear to us: There is no second chance for this restaurant and we cannot recommend it under any circumstances.

We were visiting Düsseldorf last week and chose Heimwerk for dinner. We were more than pleasantly surprised. Since we booked a little before the general dinner time, choosing a seat wasn't a problem. The service was very friendly and quick (Hannah) and the DIY concept really impressed us. Because there are small and normal portion sizes for all dishes, you can try several dishes and also choose between vegetarian and meat dishes. You can taste the freshness and good quality of the ingredients. We liked it so much that we visited the restaurant again two days later and once again we were not disappointed. We can fully recommend DIY.

We were beginners to schnitzel and this place offers quite a few options. We had a couple of the smaller ones as apparently the large ones are the size of a plate! So tasty and friendly service. Really recommend the truffle dip and meatballs as a side dish.

The service gets 7 stars - everyone was in a good mood, friendly, relaxed, funny. Rustic modern furnishings, perhaps a bit dark at the table. Food very good, special requests possible, good quality!

Interesting concept, classic German dishes also available as a 'tapas' version to share. In terms of taste, we found all the dishes to be very average, nothing really stood out, but all the dishes were ok (schnitzel, fries, fried potatoes, cheese spaetzle, pretzel with dips). It was disappointing that the prices of the dishes available online did not match the menu in the restaurant... In some cases there was an almost 50% price increase on the smaller dishes. The restaurant also seems to be aimed more at tourists. The service is very nice and yet professional.

The food was great, BUT the service was a complete disaster, no attention was paid to it, the table was cleared about an hour later, we wanted to order something else but the waiter didn't come back. Unfriendly and in the end we were insulted! The very last one! No recommendation!

We ate here today (without a reservation). I was really looking forward to having an authentic schnitzel from Germany, and based on the good reviews, I had higher expectations. My pork schnitzel was very bland, and I had to add salt and pepper to give it some flavor . I had never eaten such tasteless meat before. The other dish was a crispy chicken burger, but it was also quite bland; without the sauce, it would have been nothing. Paying for the toilet in a restaurant? You don't see that in the Netherlands... It's quite strange. The service was very friendly. The restaurant was quite busy and noisy, but I don't consider this a downside. Another downside: I went through all the effort of translating the menu and spoke to the staff in English, but I wasn’t offered an English menu. Who knows, maybe the "bland schnitzel of the house" was on the menu, haha.

Went to the DIY with the family in the early evening and felt very comfortable. The service welcomed us and served us in a friendly manner. We sat at a nice table and it was a pleasant atmosphere. The schnitzels are excellent and if you sit close to the kitchen like we did, you can hear how the schnitzels are freshly prepared and beaten. The quality of the meat was good and the sides we ordered were also delicious. Gladly again!

I just can't get my head around the fact that I paid €10 for 2 slices of celery without any side dishes, some of which were thinly breaded, with a perceived cost of goods of 20 cents. Unfortunately, the alternatives were out. Otherwise the rest was still fine. The normal schnitzels were probably good. The staff were friendly. For a “Bavarian” restaurant, I think it would also be nice if you taught your staff what it means when you order a light beer so that you don’t get asked in return whether you want a beer. But that's a matter of taste.

Super tasty schnitzel, freshly fried, breading as it should be. Delicious pretzels. The coleslaw salad was also simply great. The service was very attentive. A bit noisy in the restaurant but normal at peak activity on a Friday evening.
