We just wanted a quick bite to eat and found what we were looking for. The salad was fresh and the pasta was delicious. The service was very good and very friendly.

This was our second visit to this location. It's very centrally located in the Speicherstadt district and near the Elbphilharmonie. The pan-fried fish was okay, a bit overcooked but tasty.

Finally a great German restaurant, right in the harbor. Otherwise, there are Italian and other restaurants everywhere. Nothing beats German schnitzel.

We went there spontaneously. The restaurant is right on the main road, so you can't really call it quiet. We got a table quickly. With a 4.4 rating on Google, we were happy to be in a restaurant with such good reviews. We ordered burgers with fried potatoes and one pan-fried fish with fries. The food arrived in less than 10 minutes. It was okay, but nothing more. For us, it had more of a tourist restaurant feel. What's absolutely terrible are the restrooms. The smell of urine hit you as soon as you walked down the stairs. The restrooms looked the part. The same opinion was shared at the neighboring table, as we overheard. Absolutely unacceptable. Based on our experience, we wouldn't recommend it as a "must-visit" place.

Super friendly staff, great food, and a pleasant atmosphere where you can really have a great time. It's also great value for money for Hamburg. Nothing to complain about! And if you like Hamburg's famous "Pannfisch" (fried fish), Heimathafen is the place for you!👍😄

Highly recommended! Don't let the scaffolding in front of the door put you off. The interior has a rustic atmosphere, and the service (Svenja) is fantastic, super friendly and prompt despite the busy hours! The burgers are a hit, as is the fried fish, generous kids' menus, and there are art supplies for the kids to tide you over. Simply wonderful.

If you come from a country where they really eat well, like Spain, for example, this place will certainly seem quite ordinary to you. I don't know if this is considered good in German cuisine. But for us, it was certainly a pretty bad meal. We also came here on the recommendation of the tour guides.

This restaurant was recommended by a friend, so I'm not sure about the prices... But it was really delicious. I visited Hamburg, Berlin, and Dresden, and it was the best German food I've ever had. The pan fish was the best. There's another pickled herring? It's similar to the sailor's dish. If you're like me and prefer fish and seafood over meat, you'll probably enjoy it. Otherwise, it's a matter of taste. Just get the pan fish!!! I finished the dessert, but it was a little disappointing. I wanted to have cake, but there wasn't any, so I ordered it. My friend said it was a bit difficult to recommend. She said it tasted like something out of a kindergarten meal. Haha. Just for reference.

The BBQ burger with fries is absolutely fantastic. The fried potatoes are a 12/10. We also had the fried plaice. That's also highly recommended.

Public Transport / Parking U3 Baumwall subway station is right outside, with plenty of parking spaces and parking garages within walking distance. Entrance Area / Ambience Ground-level entrance; the building is currently undergoing renovations, so it's not exactly "fancy." Otherwise, the facade is very nice! The decor is supposed to evoke a North German parlor, very nicely executed. Staff / Service You're "intercepted" and seated at the entrance; this is now common practice in tourist restaurants. The advantage, of course, is that no guests wander around the restaurant or use the restrooms for free. The service is, as expected, very good and high-quality, and the staff is excellent. There was *no* begging for tips! [Unfortunately, this point has to be mentioned *extra* in 2025!] Drinks There's a good selection of German beers (I had the dark craft beer, very drinkable and with a good flavor) on tap and in bottles, as well as various non-alcoholic drinks, wines, and spirits. Food There's a *small*, straightforward menu with the usual typical North German cuisine and a proper Viennese veal schnitzel, which I enjoyed. As a local, I know most of the dishes, so I chose the schnitzel. I rarely rate individual dishes, as tastes generally vary, but I'll make an exception here. I was intrigued, especially because of the price of this dish. The veal schnitzel was very tender and delicious and is highly recommended. Unfortunately, there are very few restaurants these days that even have this dish on their menu. The fried potatoes weren't exactly my taste, but that's because of the potatoes. Payment You can pay with cash or card, and tips are also accepted. Restrooms Unfortunately, as is common practice, they are located in the basement via stairs, making them very difficult to access for wheelchair users. Very clean by Hamburg standards and a nice showcase for this restaurant. Conclusion: I have to admit, I was expecting a "tourist restaurant" like the ones you'll find everywhere in Hamburg serving German cuisine. I was very pleasantly surprised; for this price range, it's great. I'll probably try the other dishes as well. A great concept working here! I hope it will satisfy many more guests.

The food was delicious and much better than the Italian restaurant across the street from the Elbphilharmonie. The restaurant has a very nice, rustic decor. I visited the Elbphilharmonie and heard it was a good restaurant nearby, so I decided to try it. The staff who showed me to my table and the server were both friendly and pleasant! The veal schnitzel, classic burger, and grilled fish I ordered were all delicious. It looked like a tourist-oriented restaurant, but the food was satisfying.

Very, very tasty food at reasonable prices. Miguel, our server, was extremely courteous, friendly, and always quick to help. The decor on the ground floor is very attractive, but the restrooms were a disaster during our visit. All the stalls were dirty, and the "small" flush and one of the faucets didn't work.

The food was quite average. Burgers definitely reign supreme. The service wasn't particularly helpful. We couldn't choose our dishes and drinks in the order we wanted – we had to order drinks for each person first, then the dishes. A strange custom – German ordnung. There was construction going on around us while we were there, but access was quite easy. Prices were reasonable. There are also restrooms available.

We stop here every time we visit Hamburg and have never been disappointed. The atmosphere is fantastic and the food is delicious! However, reservations are recommended; the restaurant is always full, especially during holiday season.

Rude service, tiny schnitzel, and zero respect for guests! We visited Gasthaus-Heimathafen 25/07-2025, and right from the start, the experience was disappointing. While placing our order, the waitress shushed us and rushed us, despite the restaurant being far from full. Not exactly a warm welcome. When the food arrived, we were genuinely surprised at the size of the Wiener schnitzel. It barely covered half the plate. For the price, you'd expect something more generous, especially for a dish that's usually known for its size. The worst part was when we went to pay. We chose not to leave a tip, and the same waitress reacted with visible irritation. She threw our payment card across the table, tossed the receipt in our face, and walked away in a sulk. Completely unacceptable behavior. Overall, a really poor experience. We won't be coming back and can't recommend this place to others. A word of advice to the restaurant: fix your service attitude, respect your guests, and deliver food that matches the price you're charging.

The plaice was large and delicious, with fried potatoes it was very fatty, but still tasty. You shouldn't order salad with chicken there; come here if you want something hearty. It's just a restaurant, but you have to put up with the construction site right outside while it's there, which doesn't make the stay that pleasant. All in all, it's okay.

The food came quickly, but it was scorched, cold, and didn't taste very good. The service wasn't very friendly. The drinks were delicious.

The food was good. I ordered fish (plaice). They prepared it well, but I didn't really enjoy it. (Plaice isn't my thing! I'll try that for next time.) But I can recommend the fried fish. A small salad with it wouldn't be bad. All in all, it was good, but the restrooms weren't that clean.

My wife and I each had a burger. I had fries with it. Average at best! The burger was too dry and poorly presented. The fries were completely ruined. I wanted mayo and ketchup with it, but the waitress forgot. When I asked, she reluctantly brought me a nearly empty ketchup bottle and half a full mayo bottle. Conclusion: Not really recommended. I gave the waitress feedback as well.

The cuisine delivers exactly what you'd expect from a North German classic. Conclusion: Heimathafen is a solid recommendation for anyone who wants to get to know Hamburg's culinary side without being disappointed. Touristy, yes – but with quality. If you're looking for honest food in a relaxed atmosphere, this is the place to be.

I was dying to try the infamous labskaus and this place was highly rated for it. As I've never had it before I can't really compare -- it was ok. The overall atmosphere of the place is pretty touristy which I was trying to avoid. Overall the food I saw go by look good, nothing extraordinary though.

Kudos to the kitchen and service team for that! What really ruined our visit, however, was the way the manager handled a legitimate complaint: During our stay, an injured pigeon was limping through the dining room. When we subtly pointed it out, we were dismissed rather rudely with the comment that they had bigger concerns at the moment – the billing system wasn't working. Such internal problems shouldn't be passed on to guests, especially not in that tone. Even when we politely asked to have the manager come back to our table after dinner to objectively explain our irritation, we were again treated rather coldly and disinterestedly. No sympathy, no insight, just palpable annoyance. Conclusion: A great restaurant with a lot of potential – but leadership skills are not only evident behind the scenes, but above all in the way they deal with guests.

It was recommended to us as a typical German dish, but they have burgers, pasta, and some meat and fish dishes. The burgers are very simple, even if you order different ones, they're very similar, not very different, and the meat is very dry. Also, two of them were mistaken for the type of fries we had ordered. I don't recommend it, to be honest.

In July 2025, we were here with guests who wanted something to eat before heading to the Elbphilharmonie Plaza. The restaurant is ideally located for this, and we were very satisfied with the food and service.

I can't comment on the food, service, or ambiance, but what bothered me was the fact that the kitchen closed an hour before the restaurant closed. There was no mention of this on the website. I could have saved myself the half-hour drive. Based on the positive reviews and the description on the website, I wanted to have a nice evening meal and a drink.

I was astonished by the number of waiters and cooks; that's rare in the restaurant industry these days. 👍🏽 It was a shame that "special" requests couldn't really be accommodated. Some dishes are prepared almost as they are, and you can't leave out certain ingredients (e.g., the bacon in the fried potatoes). It's not so easy for people with food intolerances or a vegan/vegetarian diet. You can find something on the menu, but unfortunately, there isn't a huge selection. For those who enjoy meat or fish, though, this is certainly a good place. 👍🏽

Unfortunately, the food didn't impress us. Due to the many positive reviews, we specifically chose the Heimathafen restaurant. We had burgers with fries and fried potatoes, respectively. Both dishes were only lukewarm, the fries weren't crispy, and they skimped on the seasoning—we were also disappointed with the taste. Our friendly waitress asked if everything was okay. We told her that the food was unfortunately only lukewarm. Since we were really hungry, we ate it anyway 🤷‍♀️ The ambiance was actually quite cool, but a bit "dirty" in our opinion. Unfortunately, we wouldn't recommend it to anyone. On a positive note, we have to mention the service, and despite our dissatisfaction, we were not charged for the drinks. Thank you very much for that 😊

We've eaten here twice during our musical visit to Hamburg. It's simply perfect and delicious. We did have to make a reservation, but that didn't bother us after we were asked if we'd been here before.
