Cool German beer hall. Only go if you like pork knuckle, not much else on the menu

Very charming restaurant with amazing food. The menu is focused on German traditional dishes that were amazing. There were salads on the menu if pork or lamb is not your thing. The beer was nice and cold and the waitresses were very friendly and spoke perfect English. The restaurant is laid out as communal tables with cute candle centre pieces. Was a perfect meal after the Christmas Markets.

Super Have and delicious schnitzel, with 1m Kölsch...

Very pleasant restaurant, with friendly service. We ordered pork knuckle (Helena and the other with dark beer sauce) and they were delicious. But there was a lot of food and there was no room left for us to try dessert. You can make a reservation on the restaurant's website. The decor is very charming and the location is very good and easy to get to.

Were there last Sunday evening. Except for one thing, everything was great and (almost) flawless: beautiful, rustic furnishings, friendly, 90% attentive service, the drinks and food came extremely quickly (as an amateur cook, I was surprised that you can get a knuckle a la carte so quickly and can get it done perfectly to the point), everything clean... Had the onion knuckle and even the small vegetable cubes in the stock still had a light, perfect bite inside. Respect! The rind was crispy, the knuckle inside was juicy and extremely tasty. Unfortunately there are no fries. And even though it's a knucklehouse, two or three more vegetarian dishes on the menu wouldn't hurt in these times. The only thing that really bothered the three of us, which I count as "service", was the toilet attendant, who looked at you angrily, almost aggressively and said nothing more than a blunt "Hello" without twisting the corners of her mouth. On the other hand, the entire table from the sink in the men's toilet was full of water, which I only noticed when it had already seeped through my boxer shorts at the edge of the table, which is why I had dinner with one had to spend time in a wet spot in this region. It makes you wonder what the toilet attendant is there for. In addition, the restaurant was only about 70% full during our stay (terrace completely empty), but my friend still had to wait several minutes until she could use one due to the lack of toilets. She didn't want to find out what this situation would be like when the house was full. We would still like to come back. Everything is great, but free intermediate water from the tap should be possible. The store certainly won't go bankrupt if the guests stay longer and tolerate more. Unfortunately that's annoying. But the best knuckle in Cologne, well done!

Great restaurant with lots of delicious traditional dishes. The knuckle dishes are highly recommended. The atmosphere is unique, right on the Rhine. If you look closely, there are a lot of details to see in the restaurant.

All of the above loved this place traveled from Canada, the best food I had in Germany, got the Knuckle, portion was big! Food was cooked to perfection, and the vibe was vibing! Highly recommend if you’re in Cologne Germany!

If you’re looking for classic German food, and nothing too fancy, this is definitely the place to go. A very authentic German restaurant, with big tables that you share with other patrons. The menu is pretty big, but it is very much for meat eaters. Not that I mind, but just so you’re aware.The food was absolutely delicious, but don’t expect anything to refine over here. But that’s not the point of this place, either. Pretty good value for money as well, it’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in Cologne.

Bad food, haxe had little taste. My wife had a schnitzel, which only tasted nasr fry and cardboard. So a complete miss. Never for us again. There are so many better restaurants in Cologne.

The atmosphere of the place was really nice. Unfortunately that was about it. Our order took about an hour or more to arrive and the food compared to the quality was not worth it. Service was also not friendly, which concludes to a 2 star experience from my side.

I was recently at Haxenhaus in Cologne – a paradise for lovers of German cuisine! The knuckle there is amazing, really huge and so tender that it melts in your mouth. It is served with crispy potatoes and sauerkraut – just to eat! The atmosphere is extremely authentic: wooden tables, everything rustic, you feel like you're in the past. And the view of the Rhine – an absolute highlight, especially with a cold Kölsch in your hand. The staff is super friendly, explains everything and also gives tips if you are unsure. Sure, you have to wait a bit for the knuckle, but it's totally worth it! Absolute recommendation if you want to eat really well and experience real German flair!

Beautifully located on the Rhine. However, the service is rather mediocre and you sometimes have to wait a long time for drinks or to even be served. The food is okay, but there are much better knuckles. You can do it sometimes, but nothing more

We made a spontaneous reservation, which was actually possible on a Saturday evening. When we arrived it wasn't very crowded, but it was pretty loud. When it became crowded, you could no longer understand your own words. Not recommended for people who have difficulty hearing or are sensitive to noise. Drinks and food came quickly. At least 2 out of 4 meals were ok. With the knuckle, the mashed potatoes were cold and the sauerkraut was simply tasteless. The dumpling thalers with MUSHROOM cream sauce included exactly 1 piece of mushroom. All in all very dry and not recommended. I would have liked to order more sauce, but unfortunately no one came by and asked if they were satisfied. Even when clearing away the question came up: “Was everything okay?” not. I was very disappointed. I wouldn't go there again. Too bad.

The best experience in a restaurant I have ever had so far. The servers are friendly and helpful, speak literally any language, which is impressive. They recommend me the pork knuckle and it was very crispy and delicious. As I saw, locals love this place as well. So its totally in my “to go” list when im in Cologne again

The waiters were super rude, they only let us sit at the bar for drinks even when there were people only having drinks too at the tables. They only let us pay by cash and we were lucky we had the exact amount cause we did not know beforehand

The 1 star doesn't go for the food (which for sure is bad & overrated) neither for the service itself (we got wrong dishes & they were coming asking us to point them which waiter did the mistake) but for their fraud/stealing with the bill. We had to pay 113€ because the waiter in charge took the decision to give 10€ tips to herself!!! We realised we had to pay too much, so we asked for the receipt (photo) & saw the tips she added. We asked her to come & for more than 10-15mins she was avoiding coming to our table. Her first reply was that if you don't want to give it, I can return them to you!!! We asked her why she did it & how often she does it & from the 4-5 different excuses she gave (you asked 2 times for the bill, I pressed the wrong button by accident etc) it is obvious it is her tactic (thinking also what the 3 people next to us ordered & paid it seems they also gave her a large tip without knowing)!!! So, if you still decide to eat there BE AWARE!

The system with the money makes no sense at all... everyone in the traveling group has different prices (paid for the same dish). 5.80 € was requested on the card, 7 euros had to be paid!!!

It's a shame, you're treated like nothing here. Food wasn't the best either for the price alone. I don't recommend it. Sorry

Beautiful establishment with a friendly atmosphere. Charming, helpful and smiling waitress. Very hearty meal for the price and really very good, perfectly cooked, I was really surprised. If I were to go to Cologne again, I would definitely go back there.

Great restaurant, we ate very well

After spending the entire day in the ugliest city I've ever seen, I ended up in this school canteen, which was in a very awful school. I ordered pork knuckles with potatoes and sauerkraut. The knuckle was around the size of a chicken leg and had an average taste. The potatoes tasted terrible and were chilly. The sauerkraut was likely a prank. It was an extremely pricey dinner that was not fit for consumption. I recommend avoiding such businesses and picking the donner kebab option, which is four times cheaper and ten times better.

The location is a hit. The food is quite expensive, but still appropriate for the location. Overall, it would be nicer and more appropriate for the traditional house to play traditional Cologne songs instead of up and down the charts. The same applies to the lighting concept, something less bright but warmer would improve the feeling of space. Choosing the crockery for each dish to be more rustic instead of white would round off the entire visit. The staff does a great job, is quick and reliable. Overall, the Haxenhaus is worth a visit, but don't expect fireworks.

The menu and food used to be better, variations of the knuckle are no longer available. Food 0-8-15, touristy. Too bad.

A very relaxing place that serves great pork knuckle!

This restaurant has been open for more than a hundred years and is a famous old-style pork knuckle restaurant in Cologne. It is said that you have to make a reservation on weekends to get a table. It happened that the thick-browed guy helped me because it was a Sunday and you could be seated without waiting. Hungarian beef soup (Kannonchen) is one of the famous dishes of the restaurant. The soup base is probably made from oxtail, so it is particularly fragrant and thick. Although the roasted pork knuckle (Buttermarkt) is for one person, the portion is huge and enough for two people. The pork knuckle is very fragrant, a little dry and salty, so it is best enjoyed with beer. The roasted pork knuckle is accompanied by a large amount of potato puree, which is fragrant and delicious. In addition, the thick eyebrow boy also ordered a sausage that was half a meter long. The sausage tasted slightly salty, but had a strong meaty flavor. Eating it with sauerkraut not only relieves the fat, but also brings out the meaty flavor of the sausage. The sausage comes with plenty of thick-cut potato chips, which are also super delicious.

We had one drei Könige with three kinds of meat and Himmel und äad. Himmel und Äad was fine, but the three pieces of meat were dry, and for sure old without really anything to it. Sad because for 35 Euros we thought we would get some good meat here.

Tourist trap. 45,- for 1m lukewarm overcooked bratwurst. Street stall on nearby square has better quality and price Worst würst I ever had in my life.

Yesterday we were outside in the beer garden, wonderful with the glass panes to protect against the weather, plus more than enough heaters. The food was so-so, I had a large pork knuckle with bratwurst and meatloaf, but the Augustiner knuckle is a delight. The service was friendly and quick, you really couldn't complain.

Really delicious. Mega friendly staff. But: With a knuckle with beer sauce priced at almost €30, it's probably more than three potato wedges. Side salad rather weak. Would still go again.

The young woman serving our group was so kind and attentive. She made sure we were well taken care of. The Schweinhaxen was phenomenal! Everyone was so happy with the meal, drinks, and dessert. 5/5 stars on everything for us.

Traditional German restaurant located on the Rhine River Features: Specializing in roasted pork legs and HOME made sausages. Environment: Very traditional: wooden tables, wooden chairs, high ceilings. The seats are spacious and wheelchair accessible. There is outdoor seating. Dishes: 1) Traditional soup: Kannönchen:: Spicy goulash soup with bread, a big bowl of hot and spicy soup, the meat is stewed at just the right temperature. It's slightly spicy and makes me feel warm after eating it. 2) Homemade sausage: not very salty. Very tasty. 3) spareribs: a traditional Cologne dish, delicious homemade bbq sauce. The pork is very tender and delicious. The service was excellent. The wait staff are all smiling and efficient.

We recently dined here, and while the food was good and the price-quality ratio was fair, the overall experience was far from perfect. The service was poor. We constantly had to try and get the staff's attention just to place an order, which made the evening unnecessarily long and frustrating. What was even more outrageous is that a 10% tip was added to the bill without any communication. We only discovered this when we carefully checked the receipt. This is really unacceptable, especially for tourists who may not be as vigilant. My advice: double-check your bill if you’re eating here, as hidden charges like this are completely unfair.

It was all great. Wasn’t sure what to expect with the Himmel und ääd but was pleasantly surprised. We enjoyed it very much.

My most expensive bratwurst to date for €24 - I haven't measured it but definitely not 1/2 meter - plus kölsch for €2.60 - there are significantly cheaper and at least equivalent offers nearby!

The entire area is amazing and each place seems to have a specific focus- so come here for hearty German food and if you haven't tried it, Sweinshaxe! This place is a go-to for traditional ambiance and also make sure to take advantage of their Biergarten that has waterfront views!

Close to the river, it offers a nice view of the city sitting outside. The food is very good but It could be "more". I am not sure how to describe what was missing from taste or temperature.

Schlimmste Haxe ever, trocken und hart. Wir haben uns für zwei Personen Kölner Schmankerl bestellt, nur den Sauerkraut war essbar, der Rest nur noch Müll. Das kommt auch dazu, dass wir für das Gericht 57€ ausgeben mussten. Echt überteuert für so eine schlechte Qualität

We ordered Cologne delicacies for two people. Apart from the sauerkraut there was nothing edible. Pork knuckle and bratwurst were too dry, meat loaf and black pudding were very greasy, fried potatoes were still possible. So for 57€ I don't think it was possible at all. Way too expensive. I won't be coming back and won't recommend it to anyone.

Nice atmosphere, shame it takes them an hour to serve your dishes. While you wait they bring you beer that you didn't order which you have to pay for. Plus we had the surprise of an inflated bill at the end and when we asked for the receipt we obviously couldn't have it for no one knows what reason. Go elsewhere, save your money and time.

Not recommended!!! We were there for dinner in February 2023. We ordered Lammhaxen Frankenwerft (according to the menu, grilled lamb shank, prepared according to an old farmer's recipe, served with fried potatoes and vegetables) and Schweinhaxe Bierkutscher (according to the menu, pork knuckle with spicy dark beer sauce, white cabbage salad and fried potato wedges). But we got other side dishes with the knuckles. Instead of white cabbage salad there was simple fresh green salad. The potato wedges didn't taste like anything. How can you go wrong with potatoes? But this house did it. Pork knuckle meat smelled disgusting. Lamb shank was grilled but not fried potatoes and vegetables, but a tasteless lukewarm vegetable stew served in a clay pot. Such a representative house but the food is just bad! The service was very nice and friendly. Please change the chef!

Amazing Food! With a stop on our cruise in Cologne we wanted to try local food. This place was wonderful, the bread was perfect and the meat and sauerkraut was everything we hoped for and more. I would definitely recommend this place!

We went there to eat with a certain level of expectation after seeing the pictures on Google and most of the other plates around us... the stated waiting time was 25 minutes, in the end it was 1 hour 40 minutes that we waited and we were very surprised when we did saw the plate... what was ordered was a pork knuckle with pumpkin puree in chanterelle cream with dumplings. There were 3 pieces of cut-off fat on the plate for €26. When I asked where the meat was, they just said she had no idea and didn't work in the kitchen. We then received two pieces of cold, old, dry meat as “compensation”. We also ordered a panna cotta which arrived 40 minutes after we had finished our “main course”. Unfortunately the visit was a complete disappointment and we wouldn't go there again.

I ordered a 1/2 meter bratwurst with fried potatoes and sauerkraut. The price was very high at €24. I expected more than this small portion. Didn't really fill you up and lacked flavor. The ambience and service was good and friendly. I'll enjoy my meal somewhere else next time

THE hook institution in Cologne. All the versions I have tried so far have been crispy and delicious. Overall, the location is of course touristy, but also popular with us Cologne residents. But the Kölsch for €2.60 hurts a bit. However, I think the prices for the food are reasonable. Service is attentive and nice, but I don't understand why the girls are forced into these unspeakable dirndls. Otherwise, a rustic atmosphere in a historic building. Attention: The toilet is on the 1st floor and can only be reached via the stairs.

We were disappointed with our recent visit. Despite the high rating, the experience didn’t live up to expectations. We ordered just beer and some small dishes to accompany it. While the beer arrived quickly, the food took 15 minutes to come. The black pudding was of average quality at best. There are plenty of much better places in Cologne.

Nice pork knuckle. However I don't like the service. I ordered 1 bottle of Riesling but they just gave me 2 glasses and said that the wine was out of order. If they did not it in the first place, they should have informed us so we can make a new order. Overall... The food is okay.

If you like piles of unseasoned, plain meat - it’s fantastic. The staff were amazing, the desserts and starters were good, but the mains just weren’t good at all.

It’s pricey and long time waiting. The services were awful to no German speakers. When I wanted to check the bill, they even did not give me the bill and receipt! I will never go there again. The price was also wrong, they changed me much more than the actual bill I ordered! I never thought that the waitress would put tips just in the bill directly?! Lived here for five years, it was the first time I experienced such awful service without the bill and receipt.

Ho frequentato questo locale per anni, felice di ritornarci per degustare lo stinco bevendo della buonissima birra. L’ultima esperienza però è stata traumatica, avendo mangiato all’esterno del locale, tra i topi! Per quanto paradossale, i roditori passeggiavano tranquillamente sotto i tavoli del ristorante, tra i piedi degli ospiti. Disgustato ho segnalato il fenomeno al cameriere, che ormai ci aveva fatto evidentemente l’abitudine, dato che ci ha risposto essere normale, poiché in per strada, in prossimità del fiume…. Il cibo sarà anche buono, ma no, no e no!

There were 10 people and we had a reservation and a table on the terrace. Everyone got their food at the same time even though it was very full and everyone enjoyed it. A special thanks to Mohamed who perfectly supplied us "old" men with drinks. He must have had sore muscles from carrying beer boards😁

Great traditional German restaurant. Located in the heart of the city on the river bank. Very nice terrace to sit down and have an amazing dinner. The food was amazing and the portion very big. All the sides were great to. We didn't have a dessert because we were full from the gulaš apertizer and the main course. The lady that was serving us was very pleasant and professional, she made us feel like at home. Great place to visit with great food.

Je ne parle pas de la bouteille d’eau à plus de 7€, mais aussi des 10% de pourboires qui sont automatiquement ajoutés à votre addition sans vous demander si vous êtes ok. Dernière chose, à pâtir de 21h30, ils ne servent plus de dessert 👎
