Haus Großjung in Essen

At the weekend I celebrated my birthday with family and friends in Haus Großjung, an old half-timbered house that is idyllically located directly on the Ruhr and with its beautiful beer garden under tall, old trees that invites you to linger. Since I didn't want to put together a buffet, but instead wanted to put together my own small one from the extensive menu that would suit all of my guests' tastes, we tried a lot in advance and since everything was very tasty, it was even more difficult for us to choose!! The chef and boss “Rudi” responded to every request and made everything possible. Even my husband's to create a dish that isn't on the menu! A lactose-free dessert was also brought to the table in no time! You feel and taste, "Rudi" cooks with love and passion!!!! The appetizer platter was, like all the other dishes, super tasty! All main courses came to the table at the same time (28 people)!!! The choice of drinks was also successful and thanks to the attentive, always with a smile on their faces and helpful "hardworking hands", the evening was more than successful!!! We were guests at Haus Großjung for the evening celebration of our friend's 70th. The very good food, the friendliness of the staff and the nice atmosphere gave us as guests a great evening. We will be happy to visit the beautiful beer garden when the opportunity arises and wish the new operators much success.

Warm beer, outrageous asking price, three slices of bruschetta on a very small slice of bread for seven euros, an incredible €25, just disappointed. Mobile card payment not possible. dirty tables outside, instead of clearing and wiping, orders are simply placed on them.

You wait half an hour for two cold drinks... otherwise beautiful surroundings right on the Ruhr :)

The “new” Haus Großjung is simply 100% recommended! The new tenants are a very lovable and professional family who, day after day, put their hearts into this beautiful half-timbered house located directly on the Ruhr: the food is fresh and delicious, the ambience is a dream and all of this is available here for a really hospitable price-performance ratio. I can absolutely recommend the changing daily menu, the picturesque beer garden, the large interior rooms for celebrations and the freshly tapped beer. Had dinner there with 14 people. The food, ambience and service were good, everyone got their food at the same time, the price was right. When the weather is good you can sit outside near the Ruhr. Always my pleasure.

A pleasant restaurant with a very good price-performance ratio. When the weather is nice, the beer garden is also a great destination. We would particularly like to emphasize the pleasant service. I always like to stop here after a long walk along the Ruhr and drink a delicious wheat beer in the beer garden. The waitresses are always friendly...and yes, when it's full it can take a while. Every person only has one head and two hands. I haven't eaten there yet. However, what I saw looked appetizing

We chose this restaurant based on Google reviews and were definitely not disappointed. We sat outside and had a nice view of the Ruhr. The restaurant is in a very quiet location. The service was very friendly and gave us good advice on what to eat. The food came very quickly and it tasted great. The portions are just right. You get full, but don't feel overeaten. The prices were definitely reasonable for the great quality. Will definitely stop by here again!

Today we stopped at the Großjung house after a long walk. We were at the beer garden at 3 p.m. and had to wait 10 minutes for a free table. After a quarter of an hour we were finally able to order drinks. After another 25 minutes we left without drinking anything. Our waiter was no longer in sight and the others didn't care. The service on site is a complete disaster. There were four waitresses in charge of the beer garden, with everyone apparently serving every table. No concept, hardly any agreements. The waitresses got at each other because everything was going on without rhyme or reason and the guests were complaining every minute. Incompletely delivered orders, long waiting times for food and drinks as well as for invoices were the reasons for the complaints. If three meals were ordered, the last person at the table had his meal when the other two were almost finished. When a bill had to be split, the waitress was overwhelmed and grabbed her head. A guest went to the boss to complain. He came out again and said to his companion that he doesn't care about complaints. Well then, cheers meal if the boss doesn't care about anything. Hops and malt seem to be lost there. Our table was covered in stains and crumbs from guests in front of us. The table wasn't cleaned the whole time. The other tables weren't wiped down either. If you want to sit down for half an hour after a walk without ordering anything, this is the place for you. If you want something to eat and drink and don't want to spend half the day there, it's better not to. We will definitely not be coming back…

Unfortunately, the service staff had nothing under control on the terrace today. You could also hear from the tables to the right and left only criticism, e.g. that we waited over half an hour for a coffee. Unfortunately it has happened several times. It's a shame, because it's actually nice here.

We ate well, everything was perfect. A very friendly service, attentive and yet discreet enough. And all at a good price. The atmosphere is a bit rustic, but everything is clean and cozy, including a fireplace! Unfortunately it seems to be more of an insider tip at this time of year. Not only recommended as a beer garden in summer, Haus Großjung offers special days every week with food at a fair price. A real recommendation. Definitely go!

The best Viennese schnitzel in the Ruhr area - and a charming ambience in front of the fireplace with delicious draft beer and a friendly team. Haus Grossjung is an insider tip right on the cycle route on the Ruhr. Absolute recommendation!

Here you can find good food and an intimate and warm atmosphere, the numerous paintings will make you feel like you are in an art gallery. Here they offer Dunkel beer which is really good. If you want a typical Schnitzle, Haus Großjung offers numerous combinations to try! Staff and owner very friendly and helpful. Very interesting account!

Großjung has new owners who are planning changes to the beer garden. Let's hope that the interventions don't damage the ambience too much.

Wonderful beer garden directly on the Ruhr. We only had drinks. Unpleasant surprise when paying: With an EC card only from 20.00 euros - but luckily there was the option of paying via Paypal via a private Yahoo address. Nice!

We celebrated our birthdays in Haus Grossjung in September 2024 with 56 guests. The champagne reception, the buffet with main courses and desserts and the location and service were very good. We were very satisfied and would like to thank the Haus Grossjung team for a very nice evening.

After a walk along the Ruhr we actually just went for a drink in the beautiful beer garden, but then the mixed starter platter for 2 people on the menu appealed to us, just the right thing for a small lunchtime snack, the freshly prepared mixture of cold and warm was perfect simple, reasonable for 20€, we always like to come here.

Extremely courteous service, ambience 10 out of 10. Everything was to our complete satisfaction. ♡

We ate the Schnitzel Trio, although we personally liked the Paprika Sause best. It was a decent portion and the schnitzels weren't dry either 👌🏼 we also had the pasta with spinach and turkey. This tasted great too! The service was very friendly ♥️ we would be happy to come back.

We went here on the recommendation of the campsite caretaker on our arrival day. The beer garden is beautifully landscaped and large enough for 40-50 guests. The service was friendly and attentive. We regularly asked whether everything was OK or whether we would like anything else. That was pleasant, but not annoying. You can tell from the food here that the chef enjoys his job. Everything was lovingly prepared and very tasty. The Alster, which was mixed here with Fanta, was also perfect on this hot day. For dessert there was a fantastic soufflé. The prices are okay, especially for the quality offered. The two of us paid around €70 including tips for drinks, food and dessert. We'd love to come back when we're here again.

We had dinner there on Sunday. Good portions and tasty food. I highly recommend the caramelized goat cheese on tomato salad. Very friendly, attentive service. The good-humored man is a professional and enjoys his work, as he himself says, which is rare these days! Thank you for the good service!

Yesterday after our arrival at the Ruhrcamping we stopped in for dinner. Great restaurant with a beer garden, a good menu (where everyone will find something) and nice service. The food was very tasty and sufficient.

We were there yesterday and were pretty disappointed. The starter platter for 2 was quite disappointing and no comparison to the previous offering. The young man seemed a bit overwhelmed with the service.

Update 7.8.24 Turkey with champion sauce. Whole 2 champions in the sauce is an absolute cheek. It's a really nice beer garden but the service is really terrible. Some of the girls who work there are super unfriendly and seem very arrogant. You wait over 20 minutes before you can place a drink order, and it takes another 10-15 minutes for the drinks to arrive. Food tasted so-so and yes, price-performance ratio - rather unsatisfactory!

Were there today. One star is still too many. No comparison with the previous operator. Price and performance don't match. No credit card payment possible without appropriate notice. We won't be coming back.

The food was good, reasonably priced, a bit upscale, but not too expensive, reasonable price-performance ratio! That day I was sitting in the beer garden and a few idiots said that even though I was outside and at least 10 meters away, it bothered them when I vaped my medical cannabis capsule! Cannabis is a medicine, not a poison like nicotine, nicotine smokers are tolerated, although as a sick person I can't tolerate nicotine, I won't say anything because it's in the open air, actually you should keep this neurotoxin away from a bar or beer garden keep, and not ban customers from vaping medicinal herbs, if poisons such as nicotine are still allowed, and the poison alcohol is drunk and sold in front of children, which is apparently completely normal, despite the fact that both are deadly neurotoxins from which tens of thousands of people die every year! As I said, the food was good, but I will remember this experience and will see if I eat there again, for the unpleasant treatment, albeit due to an alleged complaint from stupidly grinning smokers sitting far away, in my opinion, Unfortunately there is a 3 star deduction! The quality of the food and the price were good and reasonable, I thought the waiter's apology was good if I was really honest, so 5 stars for that and the friendliness! It was stupid to have to get up and then go to the front of the bar like a criminal just to vape my medicine, especially I was 40 cm further to the right behind the fence than where I was actually sitting! There is a lot of room for improvement, other restaurants react differently, I felt uncomfortable, despite the apology and the good food for around €60 with drinks for 2!

I loved this restaurant. Because it is hidden in Essen directly on the Ruhr. Cozy atmosphere, great food and service in the upper middle class. But now after the change of ownership we were very disappointed. The atmosphere is no longer what it used to be. Dirty window sills right at the table (even my child noticed). The service was ok and the size and taste of the food was reduced. It was positive that card payments are now possible. It's a shame, it's the last time for us and at a really stylish location with potential.

After the new takeover there is no comparison to before! No more atmosphere, the usual great food with a Mediterranean selection was not retained. Accordingly, few guests! Inattentive service, a shame for this beautifully located restaurant on the Ruhr with previously very many regular guests!

Went to the Großjung house today on a short bike ride for two, we forgot two drinks, we even had to remind them twice, the starter came 20 minutes after the children's meal. It was also full but the two waiters were overwhelming but really nice. However, food is very expensive.

The food was very good and arrived quickly. The service was friendly and accommodating. Only a little more could be done for the ambience in the outdoor area, i.e. table decorations e.g. a lantern and/or flowers on the table, a few beautiful plants around it, sweeping away leaves, fairy lights in the trees, etc. :-)

We used to be frequent guests at the Großjung house. After the closure and current reopening with a new owner, we were back in the beer garden for the first time. Visually not much has changed, apart from the tables placed on the extension. We only had drinks, so we can't comment on the quality of the food. The dishes at the neighboring tables smelled very tasty and also looked appetizing. However, there is still a lot of room for improvement when it comes to service. The beer garden was only moderately to sparsely occupied. Nevertheless, the waiter didn't feel obliged to wipe the tables or empty the ashtrays. When this was asked at the next table, he shuffled away complaining and then came back with a greasy rag and very superficially wiped the table. When paying he couldn't remember which drinks we had... Training the staff and a lantern or flowers on the (then hopefully clean) table could do wonders for the ambience and service.

The service is rather helpless and clueless. The food was good and sufficient. The real drama is that it's best to pay with cash, as cards don't work.

I really enjoyed the food I had (Wiener Schnitzel). The portion was quite decent. The service was nice and friendly, but sometimes we didn't show up for a long time, otherwise we would certainly have drunk more. I also liked the facility. There was a TV there showing the European Championships, but it still didn't bother us. We'll definitely come back

Visited during a bike tour on the Ruhr. The gastronomy with a spacious outdoor area is idyllically located on the northern bank of the Ruhr. We tried cheesecake and iced coffee, which were very average. The service staff is friendly, serves quickly, but is puzzled about the prices of their own offerings, for example. But the price-performance ratio was still ok. Outside, the tables under the trees could be kept a little cleaner. The sanitary facilities, however, were impeccable.

How should I begin, I received a warm welcome, we sat down and a nice young man was right there with us, he handed us the cards and even recommended things to us. I ordered a starter plate that was top top top and I had spaghetti prawns as the main course like in Italy filled so mine Conclusion: the restaurant was one of the best restaurants I have ever been to, respect to the employees and the boss.

Lousy food at high prices. Instead of chicken schnitzel, turkey was simply served, the "pepper sauce" was inedible, the rump steak was tiny and not medium fried as requested. Mushrooms not fresh but canned, even though they were specifically asked for beforehand. Better avoid!

Very nice restaurant, located right next to the Ruhr with a nice outdoor terrace. We were only there for coffee and waffles, but we were able to convince ourselves of the other guests' good selection of food. Will definitely come back soon.
