Once the stress of overcrowding subsided, the staff was friendly and the food was delicious with generous portions. Located near the canoe launch.

Great service, good food. The big problem is that they supposedly only accept credit cards. Luckily, I had one with me. But that one "didn't work" either. That ruins the whole experience.

Hmm, the prawns in garlic and chili oil with baguette as a starter: 7 prawns, okay, not overcooked, okay, two too salty, not okay, about 100ml of oil, way overdone, garlic okay, chili completely missing, baguette could have been toasted, only 2 small slices, too little for that much oil. Payment is a problem, completely out of place. They only take EC cards, no debit or credit cards. That just goes to show how out of place German entrepreneurs live. Apparently the device couldn't handle e-cards either. It's possible from New Zealand to Argentina, but German entrepreneurs...out of place. Here's a description of the cards from Perplexity. This shows how far behind the times we are..."The EC card, officially called the Girocard since 2007 (although the term EC card is still used colloquially in Germany), is a debit card. This means that when paying with this card, the money is immediately and promptly debited from the checking account. We were there with a large group (about 20 people), with advance reservations, of course. The service and the quality of the food were excellent.

The only positive thing was the food. The service is unfortunately worse than bad. The waiters and waitresses barely understand German, so mistakes happen. Everyone does everything and basically nothing. You can't pay by card because the card is too old. The waitress said, "The boss doesn't want to buy a new one." Wow... (See another woman's review from January 25) We ended up having to pay via PayPal into the boss's personal account. His response was, "Yes, but then you can get the money back. Why don't you have cash with you?" Because we don't live in 1983 anymore. He took a photo of my husband's ID because apparently they can't trust customers?! We wanted to take the rest of our food with us, but instead of packing it up, it was thrown away because they didn't understand us. The piece of meat I got to take home was probably taken out of the trash—why would they just throw away the vegetables? We definitely won't be coming back and wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

Can you recommend this place? Yes and no!!! The atmosphere is good, but they urgently need more attention to hygiene. My recommendation would be consistent adherence to HACCP lists. The table is covered in food scraps, and old ice cream cones add a sweet touch. The waiter has been here three times now without even bothering to clean it. (No, it's not full) Too bad :(

The outdoor seating by the Ruhr River is quite comfortable. The service was very friendly. The chicken skewers were delicious. However, the sauces, which I suspect weren't homemade, were very mushy.

The food was good, but the service was infrequent and inattentive. Unfortunately, the manager doesn't seem to appreciate the fact that his EC payment machine is new, because payments with various cards didn't work. I was then offered to pay with PayPal, which I did. Unfortunately, the money didn't arrive straight away, which caused the manager to distrust his customers, even though I showed him the payment. I was then asked to pay by bank transfer. Our food was also thrown away, even though we specifically said we wanted to take it with us. We were offered new food, but the whole experience and the way they treated their customers will not cause us to return to this restaurant.

A heartfelt thank you to the wonderful team at Haus Großjung. We spontaneously dropped in last night with 10 people without a reservation and got a wonderful table in the beer garden. We received great hospitality, excellent service, and a very friendly team. We're already looking forward to our next visit! Thank you!

A lovely stop along the Ruhr Valley Cycle Path. We sat comfortably in front of the fireplace and enjoyed the good food. You could put up a sign on the other side of the river; we almost rode right past it.

We were guests at the Großjung restaurant several times during our one-week stay in Essen. We were impressed by the hospitality, the service, and the tasty, home-style cooking with a small, balanced menu that left nothing to be desired. The seasonal daily specials, offered off-the-menu, are unbeatable in terms of value for money, and beware: the included 0.2 liters of wine were deducted from our drinks bill. The family-run Großjung goes to great lengths to ensure its guests have a relaxed and pleasant stay; unfortunately, this is often no longer a given these days – every now and then, a little composure helps to recognize this important characteristic of hospitality.

A beautiful little restaurant right on the Ruhr River. We had a really good meal here: the liver was very well prepared, and the rump steak was much better than at the Blockhaus. The waiters are very friendly and attentive.

A lovely restaurant on the Ruhr River with attractive indoor and outdoor areas. They offer specials such as "Schnitzel Day." Seasonal specials are also available. We had asparagus with shrimp and monkfish, for example. Friendly service and reasonable value for money.

Personally, I'm quite critical and sometimes quite conservative and narrow-minded. 🙈 In any case, I was more than satisfied here and can't really understand the comments about simple, home-style cooking. We were there as part of a large celebration, and every meal was harmonious, tasteful, and presented in a truly appetizing way. It was also delicious. We came full of anticipation and left disappointed. Unfortunately they were ignored by the waitresses. Unfortunately, even after calling attention to it several times, nothing happened. We left after 20 minutes - up to this point we couldn't order a drink nor was a menu brought to us. It's a shame that the service doesn't match the beautiful location. The food could certainly be good if you can order it.

Zum Muttertag besuchten wir zu fünft das Haus Großjung zum Mittagstisch und hatten im Biergarten reserviert. Trotz schönem Wetter und nur halb gefüllter Terrasse warteten wir über 40 Minuten, bis wir überhaupt bedient wurden. Die Abläufe im Service wirkten unkoordiniert, obwohl ausreichend Personal vorhanden war. Selbst gastronomieerfahren kann ich realistisch einschätzen, wann ein Team überlastet ist – das war hier definitiv nicht der Fall. Das als „Muttertagsspecial“ beworbene Filetsteak für 34 Euro war enttäuschend: fünf dünne Spargelstangen, keine Soße zum Spargel, und ein Stück Fleisch, das nicht im Ansatz die erwartete Qualität hatte und zudem in schlechter Sauce versank. Beilagen wurden verwechselt, Pommessaucen fehlten. Kein Besteck, keine Basics wie Salz oder Pfeffer am Tisch – wir mussten alles selbst organisieren. Auf unsere höfliche Kritik reagierte der Kellner mit einem knappen „Ich verstehe Sie“, aber ohne Entschuldigung oder weiterem Entgegenkommen. Fazit: Für ein Bier im schönen Garten vermutlich okay (wenn man Wartezeit mitbringt) – zum Essen würde ich nicht wiederkommen, geschweige denn, eine Empfehlung aussprechen.

I am extremely disappointed and angry!! Today on Mother's Day we had dinner with 15 people at Haus Großjung. First of all we got 4 menus for everyone, so we had to ask to get a few more because it took forever for everyone to choose. I chose pork medallions with hollandaise sauce, broccoli!!! and opted for fries instead of the fried potatoes on offer. The unfriendly waiter didn't like the fact that I wanted fries instead of fried potatoes. He also made that clear to me with his voice and facial expressions!!! Before the food came I wanted to change my baby and asked about a changing room or another option. The waiter looked at me annoyed and asked what a changing room was and then simply said that there was no such thing. Everyone got their food one by one, only mine was wrong the first time. I got something gratinated. On the second attempt, after my family was almost finished, my food came and it was wrong again. This time asparagus instead of broccoli and fried potatoes instead of fries. I was annoyed and hungry. The food was not seasoned and therefore not tasty. Our request for salt was ignored. Conclusion: Service an absolute disaster and the food underground!!!! Two years ago everything was so great, what happened??? Spend your money elsewhere otherwise you'll be annoyed to death!!!!

Essen war hervorragend. Ambiente leider nicht. Da die Aussentemperatur um 12 Grad waren, war es im Saal sehr kühl, keine Heizung an. Probleme auch beim bezahlen. Nehmen keine Kreditkarte und EC Debitkarte. Was natürlich zu Problemen führte. Auf der Webseite keine Info über Bezahlmöglichkeiten.

At the weekend I celebrated my birthday with family and friends in Haus Großjung, an old half-timbered house that is idyllically located directly on the Ruhr and with its beautiful beer garden under tall, old trees that invites you to linger. Since I didn't want to put together a buffet, but instead wanted to put together my own small one from the extensive menu that would suit all of my guests' tastes, we tried a lot in advance and since everything was very tasty, it was even more difficult for us to choose!! The chef and boss “Rudi” responded to every request and made everything possible. Even my husband's to create a dish that isn't on the menu! A lactose-free dessert was also brought to the table in no time! You feel and taste, "Rudi" cooks with love and passion!!!! The appetizer platter was, like all the other dishes, super tasty! All main courses came to the table at the same time (28 people)!!! The choice of drinks was also successful and thanks to the attentive, always with a smile on their faces and helpful "hardworking hands", the evening was more than successful!!! Many thanks to the entire team!! Also on behalf of my guests!! See you very soon!!

We were guests at Haus Großjung for the evening celebration of our friend's 70th. The very good food, the friendliness of the staff and the nice atmosphere gave us as guests a great evening. We will be happy to visit the beautiful beer garden when the opportunity arises and wish the new operators much success.

Warm beer, outrageous asking price, three slices of bruschetta on a very small slice of bread for seven euros, an incredible €25, just disappointed. Mobile card payment not possible. dirty tables outside, instead of clearing and wiping, orders are simply placed on them.

You wait half an hour for two cold drinks... otherwise beautiful surroundings right on the Ruhr :)

The “new” Haus Großjung is simply 100% recommended! The new tenants are a very lovable and professional family who, day after day, put their hearts into this beautiful half-timbered house located directly on the Ruhr: the food is fresh and delicious, the ambience is a dream and all of this is available here for a really hospitable price-performance ratio. I can absolutely recommend the changing daily menu, the picturesque beer garden, the large interior rooms for celebrations and the freshly tapped beer. Had dinner there with 14 people. The food, ambience and service were good, everyone got their food at the same time, the price was right. When the weather is good you can sit outside near the Ruhr. Always my pleasure.

A pleasant restaurant with a very good price-performance ratio. When the weather is nice, the beer garden is also a great destination. We would particularly like to emphasize the pleasant service. Today we stopped at the Großjung house after a long walk. We were at the beer garden at 3 p.m. and had to wait 10 minutes for a free table. After a quarter of an hour we were finally able to order drinks. After another 25 minutes we left without drinking anything. Our waiter was no longer in sight and the others didn't care. The service on site is a complete disaster. There were four waitresses in charge of the beer garden, with everyone apparently serving every table. No concept, hardly any agreements. The waitresses got at each other because everything was going on without rhyme or reason and the guests were complaining every minute. Incompletely delivered orders, long waiting times for food and drinks as well as for invoices were the reasons for the complaints. If three meals were ordered, the last person at the table had his meal when the other two were almost finished. When a bill had to be split, the waitress was overwhelmed and grabbed her head. A guest went to the boss to complain. He came out again and said to his companion that he doesn't care about complaints. Well then, cheers meal if the boss doesn't care about anything. Hops and malt seem to be lost there. Our table was covered in stains and crumbs from guests in front of us. The table wasn't cleaned the whole time. The other tables weren't wiped down either. If you want to sit down for half an hour after a walk without ordering anything, this is the place for you. If you want something to eat and drink and don't want to spend half the day there, it's better not to. We will definitely not be coming back…

We chose this restaurant based on Google reviews and were definitely not disappointed. We sat outside and had a nice view of the Ruhr. The restaurant is in a very quiet location. The service was very friendly and gave us good advice on what to eat. The food came very quickly and it tasted great. The portions are just right. You get full, but don't feel overeaten. The prices were definitely reasonable for the great quality. Will definitely stop by here again!

Unfortunately, the service staff had nothing under control on the terrace today. You could also hear from the tables to the right and left only criticism, e.g. that we waited over half an hour for a coffee. Unfortunately it has happened several times. It's a shame, because it's actually nice here.

We ate well, everything was perfect. A very friendly service, attentive and yet discreet enough. And all at a good price. The atmosphere is a bit rustic, but everything is clean and cozy, including a fireplace! Unfortunately it seems to be more of an insider tip at this time of year. Not only recommended as a beer garden in summer, Haus Großjung offers special days every week with food at a fair price. A real recommendation. Definitely go!

Here you can find good food and an intimate and warm atmosphere, the numerous paintings will make you feel like you are in an art gallery. Here they offer Dunkel beer which is really good. If you want a typical Schnitzle, Haus Großjung offers numerous combinations to try! Staff and owner very friendly and helpful. Very interesting account!

We celebrated our birthdays in Haus Grossjung in September 2024 with 56 guests. The champagne reception, the buffet with main courses and desserts and the location and service were very good. We were very satisfied and would like to thank the Haus Grossjung team for a very nice evening.

After a walk along the Ruhr we actually just went for a drink in the beautiful beer garden, but then the mixed starter platter for 2 people on the menu appealed to us, just the right thing for a small lunchtime snack, the freshly prepared mixture of cold and warm was perfect simple, reasonable for 20€, we always like to come here.

Wir waren spontan dort essen und sehr zufrieden! Leckeres Essen und sehr freundliche Bedienung! Offensichtlich gibt es einen neuen Wirt, der sich viel Mühe gibt, den schönen Biergarten mit altem Baumbestand zu betreiben.

Das Essen war sehr lecker und große Portionen. Eine gemischte Auswahl verschiedener Speisen und viel Auswahl an Getränken. Die Bedienung war sehr nett und hat uns schnell bedient. Wir gehen wieder dort hin. Haben im großen Sahl gesessen. Wie empfehlen es weiter.

We went here on the recommendation of the campsite caretaker on our arrival day. The beer garden is beautifully landscaped and large enough for 40-50 guests. The service was friendly and attentive. We regularly asked whether everything was OK or whether we would like anything else. That was pleasant, but not annoying. You can tell from the food here that the chef enjoys his job. Everything was lovingly prepared and very tasty. The Alster, which was mixed here with Fanta, was also perfect on this hot day. For dessert there was a fantastic soufflé. The prices are okay, especially for the quality offered. The two of us paid around €70 including tips for drinks, food and dessert. We'd love to come back when we're here again.
