We went there on a whim, got a table right away, and were greeted very warmly. We had the vegetable stir-fry (Bärbelchen) with beef, served in a small iron pan, and were absolutely delighted. Crisp vegetables, delicious beef, and perfectly seasoned. We'll definitely be back.

Excellent food at a reasonable price. Don't expect anything fancy, but what's on your plate is tasty, plentiful, and hot where needed. Service seems to be a bit lacking at times, or tables need assistance, but walking the entire terrace with just a few people also has its challenges.

My wife and I were told to leave by the rude waiter at this restaurant for playing cards quietly at our table while finishing our pitcher of beer. We were told that this was not acceptable behavior. Pardon me, but if half of your dining area is literally a bar, then YOU ARE A BAR. If you serve pitchers of beer at the table, then YOU ARE A BAR. And lastly, if your waitstaff is wearing a bunch of sweaty t-shirts as a uniform, then YOU ARE A BAR.

My husband and I went to have dinner and order 1 pitch of beer to drink and enjoy. We were playing card without gambling. We played because we like to play together. One of waiters who has bold hair said this kind of thing is not acceptable in this restaurant. What? How can you sell pitch of beer and you called it is restaurant? It called bar and we travel a lot to Europe. No any restaurant complain us about playing card together. I am not sure what is waiter problem. But he did what it is not acceptable and no service mind!!!

However, when I visited this restaurant with my family, I was pleasantly surprised. The food was super delicious and beautifully presented! The portions are generous, so you'll definitely be full. The house-style pan is highly recommended. The price/performance ratio is also good. The service is very friendly. The ambiance is okay when you sit inside - it's a bit dated. My family and I came here for dinner our second night in Cologne, and it was AMAZING. The food was brilliant, very authentic German food, and was so delicious. We ate it all!! The staff were super friendly, spoke English fluently, and were great the whole time. We sat outside, but it has very nice seating inside and out! We really enjoyed our first dinner back in Cologne after (checks watch) 34 years absence. Hanneschen und de Pfeffermuhle is a fine example of a Rheinland beer hall and restaurant, with friendly, attentive service and very good food. The three of us shared two schnitzels (one with mushroom sauce) and a local specialty with potato pancake topped with a sausage, egg, and cheese, served on a hot metal plate (sorry I failed to capture the name, but I was too busy enjoying my Gaffel kolsch). Hearty, flavorful, and welcoming, and in an era of restaurant inflation, it even felt like a pretty good deal. I would happily go back.

Offerred us ketchup, then charged us for 4x packets (2 euros). When we called them out on trying to scam us they eventually lowered it to 2 packets. Didnt even open them, but still had to pay. Also, water is 7 euros so bring your own or dont go.

A well-known restaurant right on the Heumarkt with plenty of outdoor seating. Prices are perfectly reasonable for this location. For example, a 350g rump steak with pepper sauce for €26. You won't find that easily there. The service was prompt and very friendly. They more than deserved every euro of the tip. I'd be happy to go back.

Food is good here. I came here on two separate occasions. Ordered lasagna, curry wurst with fries, and schnitzel with gravy & bacon. All very filling.

We sat outside be cause the weather was nice, the staff were nice too, the waiting time was reasonable. The food: We ordered a 0.2 l Gaffel Kölsch ~2,6€, a Mixed grill dish ~28€, and a plate of Jägerschnitzel ~18.5€. I liked the taste of Jägerschnitzel nothing wow! But also not bad. But the mixed grill plate really lacked the taste… in all meats. No salt no nothing. So we had to eat the grills with the sauce in Jägerschnitzel to make the grills taste something. The steak was medium, although we were not asked before about the level of cooking, but we love medium. Overall I recommend this restaurant just for its atmosphere not taste of the foods.

Oh yes, I can☺️with a clear conscience☺️ 3 weeks ago, I spontaneously sat down with my mother at one of the tables outside.... I briefly reminisced (session opening 11.11🥳💃🏻, those were the days, before Corona) and really enjoyed sitting there and unwinding with my mother, a real holiday feeling, probably because of the many tourists☺️ Then we ordered something to drink and actually both just wanted to quickly eat a salad because of the parking meter.... It took a bit longer than announced and planned... Buuuuut it was good like that😂 Instead of tuna salad, there was tarte flambée with tuna etc. but at least one of them (for me) without onions👏🏼😂 The good thing is, I have never eaten tarte flambée before, because I have always only associated it with onions knew😵‍💫and I'm glad that there was a communication problem somewhere and that I ate my first tarte flambée this way🥰 Super delicious😋 I can only recommend it, my mother too, by the way... She already knew tarte flambée and thought it was really good👏🏼 On top of that, because of the mix-up and the delay, we both got a drink on the house and we were very lucky with the timing🙏🏼🍀And that made the end of the day perfect❣️ Thank you👏🏼

We selected this restaurant from Google reviews, waited for a table but food was very nice. Service was good until a group seated next to us insisted on moving and the already busy waiter had to ask another table to move to accommodate them (which they did), the larger group then proceeded to run the waited ragged with their demands which left other tables neglected. Food was tasty.

Centrally located, it's practically an institution in Cologne. Despite the late hour, the beautiful weather, and the beginning of an event, we got a nice seat. The service was super friendly and fast, BUT hectic, and unfortunately, we were confused about what we ordered and what we actually got. Hence the deductions :-(, it could be much better. Good value for money. And what the kitchen conjures up is really good, fresh, and on point. -> keep it up 👍🏻 So it's highly recommended, but you might have to expect some service issues.

The food was okay, it only took 1.5 hours. No one asked for a second drink. Ketchup/mayo cost extra. Card payments start at an astonishing €30, which they should have said upfront. Typical tourist trap.

On the last day of our Europe trip, we came to this highly rated German restaurant after visiting Cologne Cathedral. We waited about 10 minutes to get the outdoor seat we wanted — and after trying the food we ordered (as shown in the photos I posted), we felt it was more than worth waiting even 30 minutes. This was, hands down, the most satisfying and best-value meal we had during our entire 18-day trip across Europe. An absolute gem of a restaurant!

Located right at the Heumarkt/Altmarkt hotspot. When the weather is nice, the seating is close together but comfortable, under the outdoor lighting. Service is very friendly and attentive. The food is really good for such a hotspot. Tarte flambée, salads, and the entire range of a brewery offer something for everyone. You have to be able to handle the noise. Kudos to the team. Great team. Keep up the good work, we'll be back.

Our First Schnitzel Experience in Germany — and It Didn’t Disappoint! This was our first time trying Wiener Schnitzel in Germany, as we missed out during our previous visit to Köln. We’re so glad we made it to *Hänneschen und die Pfeffermühle* this time! The food was delicious, the service was warm and attentive, and the overall atmosphere was perfect. We visited at the beginning of summer and were lucky to get a seat on the terrace — the ideal setting to enjoy refreshing drinks and a hearty meal. A truly memorable experience that made our return to Cologne even more special.
