The food was okay; the goulash soup as a starter was very tasty. Unfortunately, the pork tenderloin as a main course was dry. The ambiance is fitting for a castle cellar, but the extensive decorations could really use a dusting and cobweb removal.

The atmosphere is great, and the prices are good too. The food used to be better, though. There was hardly any meat on the bones. Otherwise, it's very cozy.

We were there on December 29th and waited a very long time for the food.

It's always charmingly rustic, the food is very good, and the service is perfect. The only thing to complain about is the leak above the window; it was incredibly cold. They could really brick up that big hole. But as I said, everything else is truly great. The prices are amazing, so you can easily get a main course, dessert, and drinks for well under €30 per person. And that's despite the delicious food!

The visit to the Badeburg-Ritterkeller was a complete success. Located in a historic castle, the restaurant offers a harmonious, medieval-style ambiance with great attention to detail – ideal for those who appreciate a special atmosphere. The food is down-to-earth, home-style, and absolutely fair in price. The staff is attentive, friendly, and very child-friendly, catering to families – you feel truly welcome here.

Very friendly staff, plenty of food. As you can see in the pictures, we had a burger, a scoop of "dirt," and two buckets of bones. Anything not eaten on the premises can be packaged and taken home. We were there on October 19th and will be back with family on Boxing Day. Groups can reserve by phone, and smaller groups can book online. Highly recommended.

Rustic atmosphere. The menu, apart from the prices, has hardly changed in the last 40 years.

For over 20 years we have been coming regularly to Badenburg and enjoying the Burgknochen (a local specialty) in a wonderful setting.

Limited parking available, drinks arrived after a long wait and sometimes later than the appetizers, the food was adequate, but it was noticeable that some of it, like the sauces for the main course or salad, were pre-made sauces, my rosemary potato pancakes were simply slices of potato that tasted rancid, like old fat, and the espressos were cold and still had to be paid for.

The price-performance ratio is truly outstanding, but I must honestly say that the food didn't completely win me over. It's an option, but not a must-try.

Portions are huge, but the food isn't hot enough and the meat is overcooked.

The name says it all. A wonderfully authentic atmosphere. If you come here with a big appetite, you'll be in good hands; otherwise, you can always have the rest packed up. The staff is very attentive.

I always order the Burgknochen (a type of boneless pork) with a baked potato. I love it. I've known this restaurant for 30 years, and I always enjoy going there for dinner. Highly recommended!

I gladly give the castle, the food, and the ambiance 5 stars. The only downside is the journey there, which leads along unpaved and narrow country lanes, earning it a 3-star rating. However, it's definitely worth it. Reservations are highly recommended. It's also great for birthdays and has a beer garden in the summer. I would also rate the value for money 5 stars.

A beautiful castle and an impressive setting for dining. The portions were truly generous, and everything tasted absolutely delicious. The bones, coleslaw, mushrooms, and especially the garlic sauce were all fantastic. The service was incredibly friendly, attentive, and patient with our boisterous children. We highly recommend accepting credit cards! Otherwise, we would gladly return and wholeheartedly recommend this wonderful location.

The food was okay. The price-performance ratio was excellent. Unfortunately, all the sauces were pre-made or powdered. Nevertheless, everything was tasty. The service was very friendly. It was busy, but the server went out of her way to make us feel comfortable. She checked on us frequently and we felt very welcome. The parking situation isn't great, but that adds to the authentic atmosphere – finding your way around in the dark, over rough terrain. What I found a bit disappointing was the lack of period cutlery and dishes, and the fact that the servers weren't in period costumes. Otherwise, it's well worth a visit. We'll be back.

Unfortunately, the bones aren't what they used to be. There's hardly any meat on them; you definitely won't get full from that little bit. I'd classify it more as an appetizer. The rest was delicious. Nice atmosphere, friendly service. Otherwise, nothing to complain about.

We were here on Saturday, October 25th. The food was excellent, and the service at table 10 was super friendly and attentive. We'll definitely be back.

We've been to the Ritterkeller a few times. We've ordered the Burgknochen (castle bones) several times and have never been disappointed. The baguette and garlic dip are a must every time – incredibly delicious... The food and atmosphere are top-notch, but the service wasn't so good last time. Otherwise, a definite recommendation!

Nice ambiance, but the furniture is very worn and uncomfortable. The food is simple and cheap, which is why it's busy. If you like coleslaw and baguette, this is the place for you. Meat from a tin bucket...great :-(

We have (were!) been regular guests at Badenburg for years. Mainly because of the ambiance, which our kids obviously love (they don't have an eye for dust and cobwebs yet...) The food this time, however, was really bad. The Burgschmaus (bucket) was bones. Almost ONLY bones. Hardly any meat, and fried to death, too. The "Schippe Dreck" (scoop of dirt), my favorite meal at the castle so far, says it all. Bone-dry, completely overcooked meat. Inedible without the (tasteless) garlic butter. The baked potato wasn't cooked all the way through and was watery in the bottom half, as if it had been left in the pot overnight... (BAKED potato?). I could go on... Although the moderate prices are often praised, they are still too high for frozen goods, the cheapest and poorly prepared "meat," and microwaved grub. The fact that you're constantly sitting in the dark in front of your plate because they're serving "Burggeist schnapps" just gets annoying after a while... The service was very friendly and attentive, though. But going there for dinner? We'll take a loooong break from Badenburg...

Tried buckets of bones, shovels of dirt, and other delicacies. Even as a teenager, I loved the food there. The garlic dip is delicious! Fresh white bread with it... Mmmmmm! The only thing isn't my taste, though. But that's simply a matter of taste. Service has always been good. I enjoy coming back there every now and then.

It's truly something for people who don't care about fancy stuff. The food is presented in a truly medieval style and tastes delicious. The garlic sauce is especially delicious.

Wow! Everything is just perfect here! But be careful when approaching. Don't let the navigation system lead you astray, or you'll end up on a cycle path. 🫣 The food was plentiful and delicious, and everything went together perfectly. On cooler days or at different times of year, remember to dress warmly; it's a castle cellar, and it can be a bit chilly depending on where you're sitting. The service, however, was very friendly and attentive.

The ambiance is simply fantastic, which is why I enjoy going there. The menu has several vegetarian dishes, which I really like. Unfortunately, the vegetarian dishes could be improved. I think (but I don't know) that the core competency still lies in meat.

Based on a recommendation from our vacation home owner, we reserved a table by phone. The contact was very pleasant. When we visited the restaurant, the very friendly and attentive staff took great care of us. The food was delicious and the portions were very generous. We won't go there again! We've known Badenburg for a while. It's our first stop when we go on longer walks with our dogs. However, the food was never as bad as it was yesterday, and my wife's afterwards. I was already seriously concerned about the tough meat and the pudding-like, indeterminate-colored sauce. However, unlike my wife, who ate a salad, I didn't feel sick. It's been 24 hours now. The aftertaste of the salad dressing lingers in my head. If only the dogs had been given some water...

A quaint place with a slightly dated menu. Portions are overly generous (you can have them wrapped), and the taste isn't great. It's not expensive! The road there is dusty and bumpy on both sides, especially for cyclists.

We were there with the whole family and found the food delicious. The service was very attentive and friendly.

During my last visit last week, the following happened: 1. The bucket/shovel of filth was completely unseasoned, bland, and tasted like a pigsty! Quality meat is different. 2. The garlic dip for €3.50 in a plastic cup was also just mayonnaise with garlic granules. It tasted sour and unpleasant! 3. A dog was even allowed to come barking into the dining room, sit on the bench/chair, and was fed by guests from the table. I told the waitress, who only brought the dog a blanket. I found it disgusting! 4. They don't accept credit card payments. Upon inquiry, the answer was: it's always worked so far! Credit card payments are not possible for foreign guests!

Generally, the ambiance was very good. The service this evening was forgetful but attentive! When it came to paying: How would you like to pay? By card... -The card didn't work by hanging up. Oh, you have to insert it. -Inserting it didn't work either. What kind of card is that? EC card Yes, EC card doesn't work. Oh, by the way, Visa doesn't work either; you can only pay in cash. Hello!? Conclusion: It's enough for the next few years! Too bad!!!

Yes, it's quaint but clean, set in an old building. Even getting there is a bit of an adventure.

Very good food at reasonable prices. Unfortunately, the furniture isn't the best (dirty seat covers), so one of our companions, wearing white trousers, had to swap chairs to avoid getting stained.

The food was average. It was supposed to be grilled, but it obviously wasn't. Another downside was that paying was quite difficult. Visa isn't accepted, and tips are cash only.

The Badenburg in Giessen has been my first choice for celebrating my birthday for years. Yesterday, we once again felt completely at home: The historic, lovingly designed ambiance immediately creates a festive atmosphere, while the attentive, friendly and unobtrusive service fulfills every wish. The appetizers always surprise with fresh, creative flavors; the main course showed a slight shift in nuance last time, but the quality remained at the usual high level. As always, I award it a full five stars for consistently top-notch cuisine, warm hospitality, and an all-round harmonious package! Oh yes, you can finally pay by card here too ;-)

Well, what can I say? I've never eaten so badly. First and last time...

Great ambiance, fantastic location. The Badenburger Rittelkeller is a truly fantastic restaurant. Upon entering, you're greeted by a hall with a fireplace and chandelier. There are also other rooms worth seeing where you can sit. The service was very friendly but inattentive. I sat for ages with my empty beer glass, and no one asked if I wanted another drink. Even when I ordered a Burggeist beer after dinner, no one asked, and no one asked when it was served. It's a shame. However, the price for half a liter of Krombacher (€5.90) ​​is already exorbitant! Now for the food: I ordered a scoop of filth with a baked potato, sour cream, and coleslaw. The baked potato with sour cream was amazing! The coleslaw was okay, but nothing special. Now for the meat: It was 2 1/2 slices of pork belly. It seemed to have been left over from the day before and simply reheated. The meat was dry, tough, and lukewarm. There was no sign of a crust. All in all, the price of €16.90 wasn't justified for the quality of the food. It's still reasonable for the amount. But quality and quantity should be balanced. This dish only comes with a "loaf of white bread," which seemed to have been warmed up. Sorry, I didn't try it, but I saw it on the plates. I didn't find it appetizing. All in all, the Badenburger Ritterkeller is a place you really should visit. Something special. However, the food really needs some work. Making a good roast pork that's juicy and fresh isn't difficult! The same goes for the attentiveness of the service staff. The question: Would you like something to drink? Can't be that difficult. In my case, another restaurant owner was happy to take my money.

This was my first visit to the Badenburg. Very nice ambiance, both inside and outside the restaurant, in the middle of nowhere. I had the bucket with bones and garlic sauce. The meat was unfortunately a bit dry, but excellently seasoned and, combined with the sauce, very tasty and filling. I would have loved to try the mushrooms, perhaps next time. If you like rustic food, you'll get your money's worth here.

I've been here several times now. I started as a child with my parents and continued as an adult. Today we were here with four people. I celebrated passing my exam. The atmosphere was great, as was the food and service. But then, after two hours, we were asked to vacate the table because someone else had already reserved. We had also made a reservation and had just finished the main course. I would have liked dessert and a Burggeist (a ghost). It's ridiculous to be thrown out of a reserved table!!! Especially when everything was still free in the other rooms. Absolutely unacceptable. And then the payment method... Cash only or debit card? Most banks no longer accept debit cards; they're being phased out. Should I wash dishes in the kitchen next time? In the age of digitalization, this urgently needs to be adjusted. This was definitely, unfortunately, our last visit for a while.

I've lived in the Giessen area for over 20 years now, and today was the very first time I noticed this restaurant. We were lucky enough to get a table today with four people, despite not having a reservation. I really like the ambiance. The waiters are very friendly and interested in the well-being of the guests. Due to the design of the building, there's no reception inside, which naturally has a positive effect on the atmosphere. About the food: We are more than thrilled!!! The taste is impeccable, and the portion sizes are more than justified—I'd almost say very generous for the price. You can't complain at all. All in all, the visit was more than successful. We'd love to come back!

We used to eat there often, but unfortunately, it can't be compared to today! The food was very bad. We had the minced meat pan with rosemary potatoes. The minced meat was very fatty, and the potatoes weren't cooked through; you couldn't cut them with a knife! The bones for several people were all burnt, and there was no meat on them. We complained about these. They then brought us new ones, and we had to wait... unfortunately, they didn't allow us to have the second loaf of bread on our behalf. We had eaten the others while we were waiting! The service was a disaster... empty glasses weren't cleared away, and our table wasn't cleared when we finished our food; our entire table was full. And there were two waitresses there, and not much going on in their area. We couldn't pay with cash at the table either; we had to go to the cashier, but there was no one there! We waited there for 15 minutes, then went downstairs to find the lady, who couldn't understand! Honestly, never again, not even after so many years. Our friends who were there are in the restaurant industry. Word will get around: we paid a lot of money for a poor evening in terms of food and service.

Food was expensive and just not good..the ambience was not good at first we sat very dark and cold...but after repositioning outside, it was very nice to sit there..but yes for the food, it was very dull bit better than from a swimming pool kiosk.

Were there again after a long time, very disappointing. Mushrooms warmed up in cream sauce are okay, but the mushrooms tasted like they came from a jar. The meat on the shovel was super dry and there was hardly any meat on the bones and they weren't good either. Could have been from the day before. To make matters worse, the chef apparently spread pepper over it with a tablespoon and had to scrape it down first. Only the baked potato was as you would expect. I won't go there anymore, it's not worth it. Prices would have been good if the food wasn't so bad.

Unfortunately, the taste of the schnitzel with mushroom sauce was a disaster - the sauce was artificial and the meat was completely dry. The spare ribs we had were also disappointing: hardly any meat, but fatty bones and an overall lackluster impression. We were really looking forward to the meal but were disappointed. Unfortunately I cannot recommend the restaurant in this condition.

Visited again recently after many years at the castle. It was very disappointing! Coach schnitzel and sirloin like rubber and rock hard. Also cut way too thick. It can be assumed that there was a change of tenant. Thanks, no. There were 5 of us. - oh yes - baguette, garlic sauce and garlic soup were very good

Were here for the first time today for information, Google Maps navigation was a disaster and leads to nothing. The food in the Badenburg is ok, I can't complain for the price, the conditions were all very nice, our dog was allowed in and given water. The area around the restaurant needs a general overhaul
